At this very moment we are playing at the SuperZoo Show in Las Vegas and enjoying every minute of it.

We love this show and we love the spirit of this show. As pet owners and animal lovers we have a real soft spot for our furry, feathery & scaly friends.

We were fortunate to be given a 2nd Place Prize for Best New Product in 2013..so yeah we like it here! What’s not to like when they obviously have such good taste, ri-ight?

There is everything going on here from the latest in grooming techniques to the newest, funnest toys; all of which are intended to make our pets lives happier! We are all for that!

One of the most exciting shows we have ever attended as well as one of the largest if not the largest trade show we have ever seen. We were fortunate to have two booths and the walk from one to other was about a 1/2 a mile long or longer. A fair amount of exercise to give our legs a good stretch after a lengthy cross atlantic flight and a jaunt from our Euro-Homebase in Amsterdam.

We received a very warm welcome from the Ambiente Staff, vendors and from the huge amount of international attendees that came by our booth. We had the pleasure of introducing to our Euro Community the newest addition to our ever-expanding collection  – the SpiceVac! This handy little container is perfect addition to your kitchen for all your spice needs, it has our unique patented vacuum system cap and two different shaker options, coming in a variety of colors…simple & purposeful!

Without a doubt the world meets up here. Vendors and attendees from as far as the remotest spots in China, all of Europe and Scandinavia and from all around the USA gather here to buy and sell.  More than 134,000 trade visitors from over 150 countries put together their core and supplementary product assortments for the coming year at the Dining, Giving and Living areas.

It is one of the most important trading post for the growing sustainable consumer goods segment. Ambiente brings the global world of trade to gather in an elegant and sophisticated not stuffy, fun environment!

Frankfurt is a terrific spot for this show; it is a charming, continental city that brings together a grand diversity in their population. It is the largest financial centre in continental Europe and ranks among the world’s leading financial centers. Since the enlargement of the European Union in 2013, the geographic centre of the EU is about 40 km (25 mi) east of Frankfurt.

We were extremely lucky to stay in of the most charming neighborhoods in Frankfurt, Bockenheim West – Frankfurt am Main, is delightful and packed with old world European allure. We stayed in a sweet, rather romantic tiny villa owned by the charismatic Frau Coppolla and her son.

To our surprise there was a festival in town. The Carnival in Frankfurt Rhine-Main celebrating the beginning of the Easter season and Lent. The city was alive with tourists from all over Germany visiting to celebrate with a street carnival/fair that is rivaled only by Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Queen’s day in the Netherlands. Thousands flocked to the streets in festive costumes and with a good amount of beer and sausage available on every corner, it was a classic German affair!

USA was the Host Country so it was a lot of Fried Chicken, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Mac-n -Cheese, Cole Slaw, Sliders, etc…

I’m not exactly sure why there is a police car & a taxi in the center of this party…is this what they think of us in the USA, always in a cab running from the cops?!? Dunno?

This plus the over 130,00 visitors attending Ambiente from all over the globe, made it an  exceptional trip. The combination of this huge city party and the welcome events at Ambiente gave us little time for sleep! Pray hard/Work hard! Perhaps we overdid it once or twice during our stay…lol.

The Venice Mini-Palais

In this our return post I thought I would take you through our extensive world-wind of global Trade Show experiences over the past few years so that we could catch up. However I have had a change of heart and that maybe our next post, or soon to follow.

If you would indulge me just a  bit, I want to share about our world and our journey. Our beginning was a humble one that started in 2004, from our home in Venice, a beautiful entirely solar-powered mini-palais. We recycled everything and still do, even every bit of food goes into a compost heap so we can grow a yard that is a wild tropical oasis, where pineapples pop up randomly and burgmansia trees bloom with angel trumpet flowers. We lovingly continue the recycling practice today at home and at our new facility.

We began in our sweet, brightly painted back office by the yard with the sunny yellow french doors and shiny sky blue walls plastered with photos from our celebrity party days, but that’s another story. We struggled with endless cold-calling sprees and for anyone in sales you know how that goes. We were persistent and eternally hopeful. Hour after hour of calls a day, scouring list after list, wrong numbers, disconnected lines, and finally the good leads. We had the wonderful, fun and funny, a real character and our very own gypsy lady, Annyce as our first door to door sales lady. We handled everything at our mini-palais oasis from sales to packing and shipping. We were 3 till we got Juan and became 4. We hired several employees over those early years, some part-time, some full-time and some whenever they showed up. Beggars can’t be choosy. We learned a lot about people at work, no kidding. You will be happy to know that although we learned the hard way, we learned and we applied our lessons. Today we have a terrific and talented staff.

The benefit of working on the beach came at the end of the day with sunset bicycle rides on the eclectic Venice Beach boardwalk, for miles past the Santa Monica pier and ferris wheel as far as the bike trail went and then back home for more work to finish. Our boss also took bike rides although his favorite relief came in the form of tennis matches with friends who would drop by at the end of their busy work days. Happy times, hard work and lots of sweat.

We began the trade show circuit adventures in the US, the summer of 2004, an adventure that over the years has taken us from specialty coffee shows in Hawaii to Chicago, Las Vegas and as far as Switzerland, Barcelona and extravaganzas like the Ambiente Show in Frankfurt, Germany where we had 2 booths earlier this year in February.

Our products began to take off in the US and before long we were selling all across the country. Naturally, our next move was to jump across the puddle, of course, why not. We opened offices in Europe just two short years later, in 2006 in Amsterdam the Netherlands. As exciting as that was, confronting the lack of fun in sun that was our home in California and embracing the cold wind and dark days was a harsh reality. The saving grace was a city full of bicycles, good chocolate and cheese, beautiful to look at and packed with the very tall, humorous Dutch. Our initial investments were heavy, our workload growing and our Euro sales at a snail’s pace, fortunately in the US our sales and client base were increasing rapidly, and we stuck with it.

I remember how people in Europe were so impressed and even fascinated with our containers. At first they would snub us, perhaps for our humble booth and small company or maybe they were waiting to see if we would stick around, before they would put their trust in us. Turns out the latter was the case. Eventually and not too long after our first Euro shows, we began to get bigger orders from bigger clients as well as real support through word of mouth which helped other new clients trust our product and our credibility grew at a faster pace.

We have grown to love our EU home away from home and we feel a real camaraderie with our neighbors, friends and business associates as well as the pleasing aesthetic and ancient history that permeates every corner of the European Union.

We are in Europe 10 years now and we greatly appreciate the community we have become a part of and all their support. You can find Tightvac’s selling from the tippy top of Scotland across Western and Eastern Europe and as far as Scandinavia.

I could go on and I think you get the idea. Every small business is an enormous challenge that commences with never-ending herculean amounts of work with little reward. And even though at times we found ourselves hanging in there with only our fingernails, we just did and it did pay-off. All of this due to our boss who carved a road for our products like a musician playing by ear or a jazz singer scatting, creatively inventing our entrepreneurship like a surfer riding a wave, going with it.

We have continued to develop and enhance our products over the past 12 years. We have gone from the two premiere Tightvac 0.57 and 0.29 to an assortment I lose count of, from storage for the tiniest paperclips to 5 lb. Coffee Roaster size, from Tea to Pet food storage. We grew our presence on the web from our original efficient little website http://www.tightvac.com, which still works for us, to the best-selling Coffee Storage container on Amazon.com. On the ground we went from cold calls with boutique shops to manufacturing promotional pet food storage containers for Purina.

   All we knew was that our Tightvac’s were good, as good, if not better than so many other containers on the market. We just kept showing up with our beloved Tightvacs; a product that was reliable, unique and with a tremendous amount of multi-purposeful uses. When I reflect on those days I think what made it all work was that we had an innocence and a perseverance, that I still hope we maintain. We wanted to make a difference, contribute our creativity and we had no guile, combined with our fighting spirit we gained the respect and admiration of our peers and others worldwide.

Twelve years later in the US we have gone from a staff of 4 to 8, some days more if shipping is heavy. We became the manufacturer with our friends in Taiwan, where 6 or more are employed. We have expanded our offices and warehouse to what I call the mini-mall, literally, it’s a building that has a covered hallway down it’s center with office spaces on either side. It’s two stories high and covered in fruit trees with palms and plants.

It has been a stunning journey where we have crossed paths with a world beyond what we expected as we peddle/d our wares. We have made friends, lost loved ones* and married new ones**. We are humbled by and grateful to everyone and everywhere that helped us along the way. We are pleased to continue our journey, at times arduous, at times joyous and very-adventurous, we shall rock on.

There is much more that I could write about our experiences in the last 12 years but I will refrain and leave you with what I hope is an entertaining glimpse into our beginning and a bit about where we are now.

*We lost Annyce in 2008, Jason our longest webmaster in 2014 and Gordon our original webmaster in 2010. We miss them and thank them for helping us to make Tightpac America/Europe what it is today.

Moving on around the good ole US of A onto the SCAA. There is always an amazing variety of international vendors & guests and everything bustles with murmurs of new coffee secrets or the latest baddest brew or barista.

Terrific distractions all over the place, just how much coffee can I sample before getting back to the booth, yummy!

What you have to watch very carefully here is your waistline.  It will inexplicably grow and somehow you can not fathom that your third helping of brisket from the amazing new oven that will tenderize even a horse in only 4 hours, had anything to do with the growth happening around your girth.

Chicago, Chicago, my kinda town! It really is  a spectacular view in front of that lake that is an ocean. Nothing compares to that view, although the caverns of booths at the show form a very impressive canyon-like sight. Gotta love the IHA!

We are thrilled to exhibit our Teavacs alongside such dignified luminaries of the Tea industry. The praise we received for our Teavacs made us very proud of our work; a real tribute was paid to the ultimate tea container!

There is something so sacred and ancient about tea, it truly elevates your being with the history of ritual. Thanks World Tea, we will be back!

As we jump the puddle, that is the Atlantic, we land safely in the mix at the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe; this year celebrated in the Netherlands! A gorgeous display of our Coffeevacs put on by one of our FAVE clients FASCINO who has cleverly added her own logo to the Tightvac Minivacs!

This is another witty example of how retailers can promote their cafe. When a customer purchases a Coffeevac with your logo, they never forget your great coffee & will come back to shop for more.

Coffee freshness is adversely affected by the following;

• Oxygen
• Heat
• Light
• Moisture

There are several products on the market that are good for coffee storage.  Most of them will help safeguard your beans from one or more of the above, but there is one product that I have found that surpasses them all.  Best of all, it is also the most economical!  Thank you to Richard C., who brought this product to my attention by posting a question about it on my CoffeeNate Facebook page!  The product is called the Tightvac.  The Tightvac was originally marketed and sold as a tea storage container, but the rest of the food industry soon caught on that this simple to use product was invaluable in its design and how it could preserve any perishable item.  So naturally the coffee industry has taken notice as well.  The Tightvac won a best product award at CoffeeFest in 2010.

I’m afraid I sound like a commercial here, but I really like this product for its purpose and value.  While the Tightvac can be used to store just about anything imaginable, it translates perfectly to the coffee industry because of its ingenious design that works just like the one way valves found on all specialty coffee bags.  These valves are necessary to allow the carbon dioxide, emitted by freshly roasted coffee, to escape.  There are other vacuum sealed containers on the market for sure, but I am not aware of any other that has this degassing capability while not allowing the outside air in.  The Tightvac is also easy for anyone to use, simply depress the easy to push button and slide the lid on.  Push the button again when you want to remove the lid.  No pumping, pulling, or plugging in needed.  The Tightvac Coffeevac is  simple, practical, valuable, and all for $15 for the 1 lb size.  The Tightvac is available in several sizes from espresso shot size to 5 lb size.
