Brooklyn Terminal Now Open

Our Brooklyn Terminal is now open. The terminal is located at Pier #9, Red Hook Container Terminal, 70 Hamilton Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11231 and will be open from Monday to Friday 5am to 4pm.

The terminal will initially stock 57/67's, grits, screenings and 3/8's.

Coney Island Shoreline Protection from 37th Street to the Norton Point Jetty

H&L Contracting was awarded a $25.2 million contract to protect the shore of Seagate and Coney Island in Brooklyn New York. The shore restoration consists of the construction of 4 new stone T-groins, reinforcement of the Norton Point Dike, and the West 37th St Groin which will reduce the loss of sand while improving the storm risk management at Coney Island. The project is funded by the Sandy relief program, following damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Tilcon will provide roughly 100,000 tons of stone varying in sizes of 6 pounds to as large as 9.5 tons shipped to the jobsite on barges provided by Buchanan Marine, LP. The job began in January 2015. Tilcon Clinton Point quarry is the main source for the stone however our West Nyack and Haverstraw quarries have also provide assistance in supplying this job, which has been a team effort.

A groin is a hydraulic structure that is built from the ocean shore and interrupts the water flow, reducing the movement of sand. A T-groin extends from the shore and then creates a T formation out in the water. The types of T-groins being built in Sea Gate are a first time build for the Army Corps of Engineers. The 4 T-groins being constructed are roughly 200 feet wide and run 80-90 feet in length from the shore. In the center of the T-groins are precast concrete core units, triangular in shape they are used to increase the stabilization of the T-groins structure. These precast structures were produced by Oldcastle Precast, Middle Island, NY, another Oldcastle company.

Tilcon Supplies Stone for New Runway at JFK International Airport

In July 2014, Tutor Perini Corp. was awarded a $267 million contract to reconstruct, extend and widen runway 4R/22L at JFK Airport in New York City. The project includes demolition and excavation of the old runway in preparation for the expanded runway to built of high performance concrete as well as asphalt for taxiways and shoulders.

The new runway will be over 12,000 feet long and an astonishing 200 feet wide and be capable of handling the largest commercial jets, including the huge Airbus A380.

Tilcon New York was chosen to provide aggregates to Tutor Perini direct, which is self performing concrete production, as well as aggregates to our asphalt partner, Rason Asphalt.

The total project includes 250,000 CY of high performance concrete and 335,000 tons of asphalt. These volumes equate to approximately 500,000 tons of aggregates of various sizes from our Haverstraw Quarry.

The project has been proceeding extremely well with zero quality and logistics issues. Hats off to Kris Latham, Haverstraw plant manager, Cindy Lafleur, Director Quality Control, and Niall O'Gara, VP Transportation and their teams for their fine performance.The project is expected to be completed on time by September 2015.

Memorial Day Weekend 2015

On Saturday May 23, the following facilities will be open: West Nyack Quarry Scalehouse - 6am to 2pm. Mount Hope Quarry Scalehouse until 12 noon.

Our Mt. Hope, New Jersey TASC Team and Subcommittee would like to offer some tips for a safe and healthery holiday weekend. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. Whether you're traveling or enjoying a backyard barbecue with family and friends:

1. Food Safety

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling raw poultry or meat prior to working with any other foods. To guard against cross-contamination of bacteria, keep uncooked meats away from other foods.Cook foods thoroughly, especially ground beef, poultry, and pork.Refrigerate all perishable food within two hours

2. Fire Safety

When using a grill, be sure to clean it thoroughly to remove any grease or dust. Check for gas leaks. Use the grill outside, not in a garage, porch, or other enclosed space.If you plan to use a fire pit, be sure to put out the fire completely before leaving it unattended.Do not park your vehicle on grass as the hot exhaust can easily ignite dry vegetation.Do not play with fireworks, especially if children are near.

3. Water Safety

Do not swim alone.Wear a life vest while boating.Supervise children at all times in and near the water.

4. Sun Safety

Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Apply it generously throughout the day, especially after swimming.Protect your scalp and eyes by wearing a hat and sunglasses.Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

5. Travel Safety

DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE or travel with anyone who has been drinking.Wear your seatbelt at all times.Make sure your vehicle has been serviced before a long road trip.Familiarize yourself with your surroundings and know where the nearest emergency room is in case of an emergency.Watch for Motorcycles.Give yourself plenty of time.

Tilcon Celebrates Earth Day with local students

On April 28th 2015, TIlcon celebrated Earth Day Event with students and staff from Catherine A. Dwyer school in Rockaway Township.

The students decorated their own personal rock planters and enjoyed a visit from special guest Rizzo's Reptiles, who brought many of his reptile friends with him. The students got to learn about and hold a python among other fascinating animals.

Hats off to Tilcon New Jersey Scalehouse operator Chrissy Bishop who volunteered to hold the python with the students and to our very own singing star, Mount Hope Plant Manager Arnold Connolly, who composed and performed an original song, Earth Day, specially for the visit.

Arnold also gave an interesting and fun presentation about the quarry, teaching the children about the history of the quarry, the geology of the land and explaining how crushed rock is produced and what kinds of equipment are used on site.

Thanks to all Tilcon employees who took part in the this fun, annual event!

March of Dimes 5K Walk - Stony Point, NY

On Sunday April 26, 2015 a group of Tilcon employees and their families and friends took part in the Annual Orange, Rockland and Sullivan County 'March for Babies' 2015 organized by the March of Dimes. This year's event was held at Lake Welch, Harriman State Park, Stony Point NY.

Tilcon New York has been a sponsor of this event for several years and sponsored the event once again this year.

A total of nine employees from our West Nyack Corporate office and our Haverstraw Training Center - Lauren Abbondanza, Cassandra Lee, James Fischetti, Eric Kechejian, Liese Hohmann, Blake Ippolito, Nathalie Ippolito, Natalie Lopez and Kieran Cronin took part in the walk. They were accompanied by many family and friends, making a total of 29 walkers representing Tilcon New York.

Altogether the group raised funds for a very worthy cause while getting some fresh air and keeping fit. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the worthwhile event.

A Team from NYS DOT Visits Tilcon New York Inc

A team from New York State's Department of Transportation visited Tilcon New York last week to tour our West Nyack and Haverstraw quarries and learn more about Tilcon operations. The visit was hosted by West Nyack Quarry Manager John Rufer and VP Aggregates and Equipment Brad Carroll who organized a tour of both quarries and fielded questions from the visitors.

Mount Hope Thanks Diligent 'Snowmen Crew' for Keeping Staff Safe During the Winter

Mt. Hope administration employees showed their appreciation to Mt. Hope Operations "Snowmen" Crew by having a Texas Style Barbeque Lunch on April 2.

The crew went above and beyond throughout the winter, which was long and unusually cold, by keeping the administration, visitors and customer parking lots at our Mount Hope administration offices free of ice and snow all winter long.

Thanks to their hard work, there were no slips, trips or falls and our parking areas were kept safe. Great Job Guys and a Big Thank You from all of us at Tilcon!!

Despite the ongoing chilly temperatures, Spring has sprung! Our terminals and quarries are beginning to revert to their standard season hours and our asphalt plant opening dates are being set. Here is the season opening information that we have so far. This page will be updated as new information becomes available, or as situations change, in some cases. UPDATED MONDAY APRIL 13.

New York

West Nyack Quarry - switched to season hours today Monday March 30. Hours of operation will be 5am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Port Jefferson Terminal - opens for the season April 13, 2015. Hours of operation will be 7am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Flushing Terminal - opened for the season March 18. Hours of operation will be 5.30am to 2pm Monday to Friday.

Port Washington Terminal - opened for the season mid-March. Hours of operation will be 7am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Maybrook Asphalt is open for the season - Monday to Friday 7am to 3.30pm.

Haverstraw Asphalt opened for the season April 2 - Monday to Friday 7am to 3.30pm.

Goshen Asphalt - tentative opening date April 7, hours of operation will be Monday to Friday 7am to 3.30pm.

New Jersey

Mount Hope Quarry switched to 24 hour operation Monday March 30. The quarry will operate from 5am Monday until 12 noon Saturday.

Tilcon Intern Project Wins 2014 Oldcastle Materials Group Innovation Award

The Oldcastle Materials Group Innovation Awards are designed to recognize innovation across the group in the fields of safety, customer service, process, product, service and people. Awards are presented in January each year, for innovations during the previous year.

Tilcon New York Inc won and Innovation Award in the People category for 2014 with a video - 'Recruiting Through the Eyes of an Intern'.

Like many construction industry employers, Tilcon New York is facing the potential loss of talented and experienced employees as a result of well-deserved retirements. Attracting and retaining motivated interns is crucial to filling the void left by retirees. At career fairs for engineering students there can often be more companies recruiting than students, so competition is keen. Tilcon's displays typically have photos of quarry highwalls, paved roads, and runways—it is a great display for the sales team, but does not tell a prospective intern about Tilcon's intern program.

Tilcon HR Director Anne Poltorak decided to make a change, and who better to tell the interns' story than the interns themselves. As part of their collaborative team project, interns at Tilcon NY created an engaging video using a GoPro camera (a wearable and mountable camera perfect for capturing extreme action video) documenting their experiences of working at Tilcon during the summer of 2014.

This new recruitment tool will improve recruiting efforts and the business by attracting new talent.

Today, Thursday March 5, due to the snowstorm moving through our region, Oxford Quarry scalehouse and Riverdale Asphalt scalehouse will be closed.

In New York our Haverstraw and West Nyack scalehouses have closed early today. Goshen and Clinton Point remain open. UPDATED 3PM.

Our New Jersey corporate offices in Wharton will close at 3.30pm today to allow employees to travel home safely.

Any other weather-related changes to regular operating hours will be posted here later today.

Tilcon Wins NAPA Quality in Construction Awards

Four Tilcon paving projects, completed in 2014, have been awarded Quality in Construction Awards by the National Asphalt Pavement Association. The awards were presented at NAPA's 60th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in Marco Island, Florida.

'Quality pavements are something every road builder strives to construct. We want to build pavements that deliver on the promise of high performance and drivability for the public' said William C. Ensor III NAPA 2014 Chairman. 'Projects that earn a Quality in Construction Award have been measured against industry best practices designed to live up to that promise. I'm proud to say that in earning a 2014 QIC award, Tilcon has met or exceeded these rigorous quality standards.'

The four award-winning projects are:

Route 63 Bergen County

The three mile project traversed multiple jurisdictions and included multi-directional intersections, large retail areas and residential locations. To minimize inconvenience to the local community, all of the work was performed at night, during off-peak driving hours. Through proper planning and attention to detail, Tilcon New York was able to build an aesthetically pleasing roadway for the local neighborhood.

Passaic County Roads

The project consisted in milling and paving in six locations - winding country roads through rock cliffs and blind turns that included residential and multiple state recreational areas and extensive wildlife. Tilcon New York coordinated with area governments to produce smooth, high-quality asphalt pavements.'

County College of Morris Campus

Tilcon overlaid and milled various roads and parking lots to serve more than 8,000 students who attend the college. Coordinating, scheduling and controlling traffic were the biggest challenges and Tilcon worked through them all to produce high quality asphalt pavements.

Newark Liberty International Airport Taxiway P

Tilcon milled and paved the existing taxiway, built two new high speed taxiways, upgraded the existing electrical system and remediated ponding problems. Working mostly at night and on weekends, in a high-security area, Tilcon produced a high quality pavement for the airport.

All New Jersey Quarry scalehouses and Riverdale Asphalt scalehouse will be closed Tuesday January 27.

All New Jersey facilities will open at the usual time on Wednesday January 28 except Riverdale Asphalt which WILL open 8.0am to 3pm.

New York UPDATED TUESDAY JANUARY 27.

All New York quarry scalehouses and our corporate office will be closed Tuesday January 27.

Our Clinton Point, Haverstraw and West Nyack Quarry scalehouses will open on Wednesday January 28 at 7am, a delayed opening.

Goshen Quarry scalehouse will open at 7am, it's normal opening time.

Our corporate offices will be open on Wednesday January 28.

Asphalt Cement Name Change - New Jersey

Here is some important information regarding an expected name change from the NJDOT.

The NJDOT is expected to change the name of the Polymer modified asphalt. The current name of the asphalt cement is PG76-22 this will change to PG64E-22; there will be no change to standard grade PG64-22.As a result of this change, the names of all NJDOT asphalt mixes using Polymer modified asphalt will change.

For Example:

HOT MIX ASPHALT 12.5ME SURFACE COURSE

1. "HOT MIX ASPHALT" "Hot Mix Asphalt" is located in the first field in the Item description for the purpose of identifying the mixture requirements.

2. "12.5" The second field in the Item description designates the nominal maximum size aggregate (in millimeters) for the job mix formula (sizes are 4.75, 9.5, 12.5, 19, 25, and 37.5 mm).

3. "M" The third field in the Item description designates the design compaction level for the job mix formula based on traffic forecasts as listed in Table 902.02.03-2 (levels are L=low and M=medium).

4. "E" The fourth field in the Item description designates the high temperature designation of the performance-graded binder. Options are "64" for PG 64-22 and "E" for PG 64E-22.

5. "SURFACE COURSE" The last field in the Item description designates the intended use and location within the pavement structure (options are surface, intermediate, or base course).

Winter Holiday Donation Drives

In December Tilcon employees organized a food, clothing and pet donation drive to benefit local good causes.

In total, we gathered and donated over 800 pounds of canned and non-perishable food to benefit two local charities - the Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry and Rockland County's People to People.In addition to our food drive, clothes and toys were collected to benefit Coast Guard and other military families served by the Central Jersey Navy League's Angel Program. And not forgetting our four-legged friends, pet food, toys, blankets and treats were donated to Hi Tor Animal Center in Rockland County, New York.

Thank you to all our employees for their generosity which helped to make the festive season a little brighter for many people.

Winter Operations 2014 - 2015

The 2014 construction season is rapidly coming to an end. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your business and to outline our winter operations for hot mix asphalt and cold patch during the winter of 2015.

This winter, in New Jersey, we will open our Riverdale Asphalt Plant to provide you with hot mix asphalt from December 29, 2014, to March 16, 2015. Winter hours will be from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. These hours are barring any extreme weather or holidays. Weather disruptions and holidays will be posted on our website.

Winter pricing will be in effect during this time period. For New Jersey, please call our Sales Team at 1-855-659-1100 Monday to Friday 6am to 5pm for winter pricing and to place an order. Winter Cold Patch will be available at our Mt. Hope, Pompton Lakes, Oxford in bulk and at our Kearny facility in fifty pound bags. Please note that we will not be responsible for material placed during adverse conditions.

For projects requiring production hours other than as detailed above, a minimum advanced notification of 48 hours is required. Plant opening fees for these times are available on request from our Sales Team on 1-855-659-1100.

Tilcon Employees Take Part in Blow Away Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk

On Sunday, October 12th Tilcon New York fielded a team of runners and walkers to take part in Nyack Hospital's 2014 Blow Away Breast Cancer 5k run/walk. Tilcon employees and family members joined 450 other participants on a cool but beautiful fall morning to run/walk along the streets of Nyack, NY. Proceeds from the event benefited the Nyack Hospital's Blow Away Breast Cancer campaign which provides breast health education and support services, community outreach and free breast screenings for Rockland County's underserved. The steep hills of Nyack made for a challenging but enjoyable event. James Fischetti, Billing Analyst at Tilcon's West Nyack office, finished in a very impressive fourth place overall in a time of 20 minutes 10 seconds.

Tilcon Paves the Palisades Interstate Parkway

Tilcon began work, in late July, on a major project to repave an 11 mile-stretch of the Palisades Interstate Parkway, the entire length of the Parkway in New Jersey, in both directions. In New Jersey, the Parkway runs from the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to the New York state line at Alpine. Three scenic overlooks in New Jersey offer views of the Hudson River and the New York City skyline. It is a heavily-travelled interstate traffic route which presents significant scheduling challenges.

The scope of the project includes paving all interchange ramps, rest areas, scenic look-outs and the PIP spurs. The mill and pave features 3" milling with 1.5" hot mix asphalt 9.5M64 Intermediate Course and 1.5" hot mix asphalt 9.5M64 Surface Course. Overall, the project will use approximately 92,000 tons of hot mix asphalt sourced from Tilcon's Mount Hope and North Bergen plants.

In addition to the paving element, nine bridge deck repairs, concrete sloping curb repairs, drainage modifications, pavement markings, signage improvements and landscaping are included in the scope of work.

The project, awarded in June 2014 by the State of New Jersey Department of Transportation is valued at $11.2 million. It is scheduled to be completed later this year. Paving is restricted to weekend and nighttime hours and must be completed to a very aggressive timeline.

Tilcon is the primary contractor on this project, working with a large number of subcontractors including Joseph M. Sanzari Inc (bridge deck repairs), Paolella Pro-Filing (NB milling), Intercounty Paving Assoc. (SB milling), J. Congressman Freylinghausen Tours Tilcon's Mount Hope Quarry and Asphalt Plant

Rodney P. Frelinghuysen visited Tilcon's Mt. Hope facility in Wharton, NJ on September 8. The Congressman is serving his tenth term as the Representative for New Jersey's 11th Congressional District. In the 113th Congress, Frelinghuysen serves as New Jersey's senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and on three key appropriations subcommittees: Energy and Water Development, Homeland Security and Defense, where he serves as Chairman.

Frelinghuysen represents 54 municipalities in the 11th Congressional District, including communities in Morris, Sussex, Passaic, and Essex Counties. Tilcon has 5 locations in the 11th District: Byram, Mt. Hope, Pompton Lakes, Riverdale and Totowa and a total of 369 employees are employed at these locations.

The tour began with a presentation and overview of the company by Tilcon's Executive Management team: Seán O'Sullivan, President Tilcon New Jersey; Vince Gallo, Executive Vice President; Josh Benson, General Manager Sales; Frank Hung, Director of Safety; Brad Carroll, General Manager of Aggregates; Scott Laudone, General Manager of Asphalt; Arnold Connolly, Mt. Hope Plant Manager and Karen Edgar, Public Relations Manager.

After the presentation, the Congressman went on a windshield tour of the quarry, asphalt, recycling and quality control lab, led by Arnold, Brad and Scott. The Congressman was able to see firsthand how the quarry operates and how rocks are mined and processed. He then went to the asphalt plant and Scott explained to him the importance of using recycled products in the production of hot mix asphalt and talked to him about the efficient state-of-the-art Gencor asphalt plant on site and how it was constructed with safety, the environment and ease of access in mind.

Safety is always number one priority at Tilcon, and the new asphalt plant project included improvements to the property's roadways that facilitate the ease of traffic flow into and out of the facility for the local community, customers, visitors and employees. The new plant runs more efficiently and quietly and provides additional dust control measure improving the plants overall environment and further minimizing any intrusion to the surrounding neighbors and community.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Congressman took a tour of the Quality Control lab and was greeted by several Tilcon employees who wanted to meet the Congressman and also asked questions about federal Transportation Funding and its relationship to the construction industry. A question was poised, on what actions the House of Representatives may take in the near future to help aid in the funding?

The Congressman left with a better understanding of our industry and a genuine interest in helping to support it and was very appreciative of the opportunity to hear about the concerns of his constituents.

Tilcon New Jersey Company Picnic

On Saturday, August 2nd just over 200 Tilcon New Jersey employees and family members brought along their swimsuits and sunscreen for a fun-filled Family Picnic at the Picatinny Arsenal facility, adjacent to Mount Hope.

Children of all ages had a blast at the Frog Falls water park, which features a lazy river, two water slides, a toddler play area and a large swimming pool.

A barbeque lunch of burgers and hot dogs, corn, coleslaw, beans and refreshments was served under a tented area. Children also enjoyed snow cones and ice-cream beside the pool area.

Music was provided all afternoon by a DJ.

There were blue skies and the sun shone all day, a relief after a week of clouds and rain.

The picnic was a great success and enjoyed by all those who attended. Thanks to Arnold Connelly and his team for organizing this wonderful family day out, and to all at Picatinny Arsenal for allowing us the use of their facility for the day, in particular to Maureen Tsadilas, Aquatics Director, without whom the event would not have run smoothly.

Tilcon Wins NAPA Safety Innovation Awards

The National Asphalt Pavement Association announced last month that Tilcon had won four major awards in its Operational Excellence Award categories, for Community Involvement, Ecological Excellence and two for Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation. The 2013 awards were presented at NAPA's Mid-Year Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, mid-July.

NAPA states 'The Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Award recognizes the development and implementation of innovative ideas that lead to improved worker safety in a roadway zone, plant site or quarry environment and companies whose safety practices go above and beyond normal safety practices.'

Tilcon's Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation Awards

Binder Sampling - Binder sampling is essential to ensuring the production of high quality asphalt pavements and a requirements for Quality Control/Quality Assurance. While a necessary task to perform, the testing of hot bituminous materials also poses safety concerns. Tilcon created an innovative way to enhance the safe working environment of employees.

Prior procedures dictated Tilcon obtained samples of asphalt cement through a valve in the tank, the preferred industry method for sampling. To ensure worker health and safety, employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In order to avoid the potential for dropped samples and accidental splatter, Tilcon devised a Hot Liquid Asphalt Sampling Center. The Center includes a recessed shelf which holds the sampling container, a clear Lexan window and a cover for placement under the hot asphalt. Now employees, after dressing in their PPE's, set a sampling container under the valve; with both hands , they open the valve and monitor the pour through the Lexan window. After the sample has been gathered, a cover is placed over the sample to prevent accidental spills as the liquid cools. The new system adds additional protection for samplers by providing an innovative solution to a potential risk.

Jackhammer Lift – Tilcon employees developed an innovative way to protect workers by mounting hydraulic lifts designed to hold 90lb jackhammers to the frame of a truck. Jack Lukas, Prep Crew Foreman at Tilcon explains 'The crew realized that lifting jackhammers out of the toolbox was just as difficult as using the jackhammer, and finding a better way to store the hammers would be safer for the men.' The crew developed a great idea – instead of storing heavy jackhammers in metal cases under the truck body which would require unsafe lifting and potential back injuries, they would mount the jackhammers to a hydraulically-controlled lift/carrier system.'

The carrier is designed so that two jackhammers sit side-by-side in the holder which allows for the equipment to be raised and turned into a horizontal position for easy, safe, ergonomical removal. Mr Lukas says 'It allows us to save time and eliminates unnecessary set-up and breakdown time. It also puts the jackhammers in an ergonomical position and saves our backs and fingers from injury.'

This ingenious device was executed on-site at Tilcon New York, making it a cost-effective safety innovation which protects employee health.

Tilcon Wins Four Major National Asphalt Pavement Association Awards

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced this week that Tilcon New York Inc had won four major awards. The awards were presented this week at NAPA's Midyear Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

' Through the creation of five Operational Excellence Award Categories; Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation, Community Involvement, Ecological, Outstanding Brochure and Outstanding Website; the Awards Committee established a blueprint for excellence – detailing the aspects that make for a successful business' stated Jim Mitchell, Chairman of NAPA's awards committee.

For 2013, Tilcon won awards in the Community Involvement, Ecological and Asphalt Operations Safety Innovation categories.

Tilcon's Community Involvement Award was based on the company's community relations program as a whole. The company has a community relations goal for each employee – 24 to 48 hours volunteer time per year, with a focus on being a good neighbor. Tilcon has hosted open houses for local residents at locations in New Jersey and New York in recent years. In New Jersey, a team of employees work with a local elementary school to celebrate Earth Day with a live animal show and crafts each year. This year the event focused on Native American culture and native New Jersey animals.

In New York, a crew of Tilcon volunteers has worked for several years with local non-profit Keep Rockland Beautiful to organize an Annual Clean-Up, part of the Great American Clean-Up. In 2013, the team cleared the Tomkins Cove Dock which borders the Hudson River in Tomkins Cove, NY.

Each year cadets from the West Point Military Academy tour Haverstraw and Tomkins Cove quarries. Other facilities host tours from colleges, schools and boy scout troops across the region.

Tilcon's Ecological Award honors Mount Hope Asphalt plant. The plant is a new high-efficiency asphalt plant that replaes three inefficient plants. As the largest plant in the state, it is capable of 600 tons per hour and storing 2,700 tons in nine storage silos. The plant uses technology that makes it the most fuel-efficient and environmentally clean design in the hot mix industry.

The two remaining awards, for Safety Innovation, will be the subject of a separate article.

Boy Scout Tours in New York and New Jersey

Tilcon New York and New Jersey both hosted Scout tours during the month of June.

Both Scout packs were preparing to earn their geology badges and it was important for them to see a working quarry and the different formations and the geology of the land.

New Jersey Hosts Scouts from Long Valley, New Jersey at the Mt. Hope Quarry

On Friday June 20, Brad Carroll, General Manager of Aggregates, treated the Scout group from Long Valley, New Jersey to a bus tour of the quarry which included visiting Mt. Hope's new asphalt plant, quality control lab, scalehouse, recycling and mining areas. They learned about the history and geology of the land and about the crushing and blasting process and how stone is made in various different sizes to be transported to our customers. The Scouts asked great questions and were very inquisitive about the whole production process.

The final stop was the heavy equipment garage that was home of Tilcon's newly purchased 777 haul truck that was spiffed and shined up by Billy Paul, Superintendant of Equipment and Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Jim Martin and Scott Helbing. The Scouts and their families loved it and took group photos on the haul truck to take home with them.

Liz Saranglao, Engineering Intern, helped out to make sure that the Scouts safely climbed up on the equipment and on the bus and that everybody got goody bags with informational material at the end of the tour.

New York Host Scouts from Fairfield, Connecticut at the West Nyack Quarry

The Scouts from Fairfield, Connecticut were planning a road trip to the Sterling Mine Museum in New Jersey on June 27 and were interested in doing a tour of the West Nyack Quarry beforehand as part of the geology background portion of their Scout badge requirements. Quarry employees were more than happy to assist with the Scouts' request.

John Rufer, Plant Manager prepared the facility and made sure that everything was ready for the Scouts' arrival. Jeremy Vandermark, Quarry Foreman and Kelly Tribble, Operations Manager lead the tour and explained to the group what happens at the quarry on a day to day basis and how we produce aggregates/crushed stone. They also learned about the history and geology of the quarry and its many different land formations. The Scouts were able to view the crushing and mining pit areas and were able to observe the heavy equipment that we use on site.

Kris Latham, Performance Manager, was on-hand for a Q&A session after the tour and explained to the Scouts and their family members the production and blasting process. Plant Assistant Sue Kopek made arrangements for the bus rental for the tour and helped to make sure that the Scouts were safe boarding and exiting the bus and made everyone feel at home.

Thanks to all Tilcon employees volunteers for their assistance in making the tours at both locations a huge success!

The firm donates to a New Jersey pantry, Marine Toys for Tots, The American Heart Association and numerous local museums and schools. It donated heavy construction equipment for a local elementary school's Christmas Parade, provided arts and crafts to another school in celebration of Earth Day, and participated in trash clean-up days along the Hudson River. Tilcon also holds open houses and plant tours for more than 3,000 visitors at a time, educating the public, students and the media about the important role aggregates miming plays in today's society.

Tilcon Builds New Parking Lot for Poughkeepsie Babe Ruth

On Friday May 9, 2014 Tilcon donated approximately 450 tons of Item 4 stone to install a Little League parking lot in Poughkeepsie, home of our Clinton Point Quarry. The field will be used by the Poughkeepsie Mid Hudson Babe Ruth organization.

Stone for the parking lot was transported by Tilcon hired haulers Corrao Trucking and K & A Trucking who donated their time to the project. Tilcon New York Construction provided a dozer and operator to grade the new parking lot.

'Tilcon Field' opened on Saturday May 10.

Poughkeepsie Mid Hudson Babe Ruth Baseball (PBR) operates a baseball league for approximately 400 local young players aged 4-18, who live mostly in the town of Poughkeepsie. They play in New York State South District.

The league's season starts with Opening Day on April 3 and continues until the end of June. Towards the end of the season, All Star tournament teams are formed to play against other teams in the District.

Tilcon Field is the first new field to be built in the town since 1999 and will be enjoyed by many young players over the years to come.

Memorial Weekend 2014

Riverdale Batch Plant - Convenience for our Smaller and Medium-Sized Customers

Riverdale Batch plant is open for the season, Monday through Friday 7.00am to 3.30pm and Saturdays 7.00am to 12.00 noon. Riverdale Batch is Tilcon New Jersey's only batch asphalt plant and is particularly convenient for small and medium-sized customers working on smaller projects. The minimum order size is one ton. This gives flexibility for customers working with a preferred mix on a project.

The plant is a 1968 Barber Green five ton batch plant with five hot bins which will store 70 tons of dry aggregate for mixing. It can make numerous mixes however the main products sold are usually commercial driveway top, I-5, I-2, I-4, ¼ mix, sand mix.

The plant is very conveniently located just off Highway 287 (Exit 53, Bloomingdale/Pompton Lakes) giving very easy access to many interstates and highways in Central and Northern New Jersey.

Tilcon Marks Earth Day with Elementary School Event

Employees from Tilcon visited the Catherine A. Dwyer School in Rockaway Township, on April, 22, for their 5th Annual Earth Day Presentation. This year the 2nd grade students began the event by coloring their own animal masks and making them very colorful and realistic. Several students even colored two masks for friends that were not able to attend and also to bring home to their families.

After the arts and crafts portion, special guest Nick from Rizzo's Reptiles brought in many of his reptile friends with him to visit the students so they could see and feel them. Some of the reptiles were snakes, beetles, toads, a chinchilla, crocodile and even a python snake. Two of our brave Tilcon representatives, Brad Carroll, General Manager of Aggregates and Jessica Zinna, Project Coordinator volunteered to hold the snake along with a school aid while Nick presented it to the students.

Brad Carroll finished the show with a PowerPoint presentation about the Mt. Hope Quarry. Many of the students were never at a quarry before and didn't know what we did on a day to day basis. The presentation allowed them to learn about the history of the quarry and the geology of the land as well as learning about blasting and about the equipment on the site. Throughout the presentation, the students asked great questions and were very interested in the process even at such a young age.

Thank you to all the other Tilcon employees who volunteered time out of their busy schedules to volunteer to help out with the event: Claudia Abrams, Maritsa Barosi, Sue Phillips and Pat Dickerson.

NAPA - the National Asphalt Paving Association offers the Diamond Award Program each year. This program recognizes the best performing asphalt plants and asphalt paving crews around the country in terms of the quality of the material they produce, how well-managed, safe and environmentally-friendly the plants are and how safe, well-trained and well-operated the construction crews are.

Tilcon's Third Annual Spring Clean Up at Casper Hill Road

Tilcon's Third Annual Spring Clean Up took place on Saturday April 5, 2014. A group of Tilcon volunteers, comprising employees and their families, spent several hours clearing Casper Hill Road and the adjacent verges of litter and debris. This event was organized in conjunction with local non-profit environmental group Keep Rockland Beautiful and was part of the Great American Clean Up, in which volunteers across the country work to clean up part of their neighborhood.

The Tilcon employees who took part include John Van Zetta, Tilcon Environmental Manager and his wife Talena, Sue Kopek and her family, Jason Hope and his family, Eric Kechejian and his daughter ,West Nyack Quarry manager John Rufer and West Nyack Quarry Quality Control Manager Mike Kalinowski, along with two West Nyack Quarry employees Keron Allen and Steven Trejos. John Cooney, Tilcon NY Divisional President and his wife Susan also took part, along with Bill Poole, Tilcon New York Chief Operations Officer and his wife Christine and their daughter. The West Nyack Corporate office was also represented by Adriane Casterella and Doug Remine. Niall O'Gara, Tilcon New York Vice President - Transportation and his wife Gerry Collins also took part, along with their sons Eoin and Brendan.

In addition to the Tilcon employees, John LaPlaca also attended the Clean up. John is a Keep Rockland Beautiful 'super-volunteer' who has at times gathered over 1,000 bags of garbage in a year, by himself! Finally, Impact Property Services/Spotless sent two employees Carlos Martinez and Wilson Ochoa to assist with the Clean Up. Casper Hill Road is the company's 'Adopt-a-Road'.

Volunteers were provided with protective gloves, garbage bags and trash grabbers and refreshments were served. Keron Allen and Steven Trejos operated loaders which shuttled trash to the dumpster, to make the collection process quicker and easier. Overall, a large dumpster was half-filled with garbage bags of trash collected from the site.

Thanks to everyone who took part in this very worthwhile event and a special thanks to Clarkstown Police who organized the closure of Casper Hill Road during the Clean Up.

Third Annual Spring Cleanup in Association with Keep Rockland Beautiful - Please Join Us!!

Tilcon New York Inc has teamed up again with local environmental non-profit group Keep Rockland Beautiful to organize a 3rd Annual Spring Cleanup. The Cleanup will take place on Saturday April 5th, 2014 from 9.00am to 12.30pm on Casper Hill Road in Valley Cottage.

Volunteers from both organizations will work together to clear Casper Hill Road of litter and trash. The entire length of Casper Hill Road from the intersection of Crusher Road to the intersection of Route 303 will be closed to all traffic during the Cleanup.

This event will be part of The Great American Cleanup, a series of volunteer-led initiatives across the country running throughout April and May. Tilcon is a sponsor of this event, working with Keep Rockland Beautiful, who are coordinating other cleanups in the area under The Great American Cleanup banner during April and May.

Work gloves, trash bags and litter grabbers will be handed out to all volunteers. Water, sports drinks, bagels and doughnuts will also be provided.

Tilcon Wins Six NAPA National Awards for Quality in Asphalt Paving

Six Tilcon construction projects have been awarded a prestigious Quality in Construction Award by the National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA) for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement.

The Quality in Construction Awards compare nominated asphalt pavement projects against best practices and standards and honor those which exemplify excellence in construction standards.

The following Tilcon projects won for 2013:

Newark Liberty International Airport Taxiways A, B, D and PA. This 20 stage mill-and-overlay rehabilitation project was completed in seven day increments and also included replacing taxiway lighting fixtures, guard-bar fixtures and other structures. Tilcon met stringent density, joint, grade and rideability requirements and credits good partnering among contractors, engineers, airport operations, tenants and the Federal Aviation Administration as a key to the project's success.

Skyline Drive, Ringwood, NJ. Tilcon was asked to use a 12.5 stone-matrix asphalt mix on this project, which had never been used on a county road before. This mix was chosen to help increase driver safety on a steep and winding road. The paving was completed in two nights, the first night with alternating traffic conditions and the second night with the road closed to traffic.

State Route 63, Palisades Park, NJ. This mill-and-overlay project is in a very congested area - 1 mile from the George Washington Bridge. The company used reclaimed asphalt pavement in the mixes, a green paving technique that reduced the amount of virgin materials required for the project and kept material out of the landfill. Tilcon maintained two lanes of traffic during construction, despite paving challenges that included dealing with more than 40 intersections, time restrictions and maintenance obstacles. It produced a smooth quality pavement earning incentive pay for the rideability of the road.

Garden State Parkway near Clifton, NJ. The project had several stages, beginning with the reconstruction of the ramp off US Route 46 and the addition of a longer and wider acceleration lane, followed by a mill-and-fill operation. Tilcon incorporated green paving techniques into the project, using reclaimed asphalt pavement for mixes. That reduced costs, the amount of material going into the landfill and the amount of new materials required for the project. Working only at night, the company maintained a smooth transition between the new and existing pavement during construction and produced a high-quality asphalt pavement for motorists along the Parkway.

County Roads in Warren, NJ. Tilcon used reclaimed asphalt pavement in the mixes, a green paving practice that reduced the need for new aggregates and kept materials out of landfills. Tilcon met the strict pavement compaction and ride smoothness for the project, while maintaining traffic on the rural roads.

US Route 202, Mahwah, NJ. Despite limited working hours on this project, the company completed the paving in two days, minimizing disruptions to traffic on this heavily traveled road. Tilcon incorporated reclaimed asphalt pavement into the mixes, a green paving technique that helps keep materials out of landfills and reduces the need for virgin aggregates. Tilcon produced a smooth, high-quality roadway.

Tilcon Wins Three NSSGA Gold Awards

Move over Winter Olympics, we've got our own haul of golds! The National Sand, Stone and Gravel Association (NSSGA) has awarded prestigious gold awards in Community Relations and Environmental Excellence to three Tilcon locations for 2013.

Gold awards have been won by Tilcon New Jersey's Oxford Quarry and Tilcon New York's Haverstraw Quarry for excellence in the Community Relations category and by Tilcon New Jersey's Mount Hope Quarry for excellence in the Environmental category.

Additionally, Tilcon New Jersey's Mount Hope Quarry is honored with the Two Gold Stars of Excellence Award, won this year by only two quarries in the country. This special recognition goes to a location which has won two gold awards within the past five years. Mount Hope Quarry won gold in the Environmental category for 2013 and gold in the Community Relations category for 2010.

Dan Stover, president of the Northeast Division of Oldcastle Materials Group commented "The Two Stars of Excellence Award is a testament to the Mount Hope Quarry employees' great, ongoing work, which sets the bar high and challenges all of our locations to strive for excellence."

Tilcon has always worked hard to be a good neighbor to the communities in which we operate our quarries and plants. We understand the importance of giving back and getting involved. In Haverstraw, NY we have teamed up with local organizations in a number of ways. In addition to offering quarry tours to schools and scout troops, we are involved with the Rockland County Adopt A Road Program and assist the Rockland County Police Athletic League and Fire and Rescue Squads.

We are closely associated with local environmental non-profit organization Keep Rockland Beautiful and our employees have worked with the group in the last two years to clean up a section of Haverstraw Bay on the Hudson River and also to clean-up the dock at our Tomkins Cove facility, also on the Hudson of debris that had washed ashore.

A contingent of Tilcon employees participated in the Avon Breast Cancer and March of Dimes walkathon. At the March of Dimes event, Tilcon set-up a display table and gave out water and wet towels to the participants. We also give to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, Haverstraw Chamber of Commerce Annual Street Festival, Rockland Countyy Parent Aid Fund Annual Golf Classic, the Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation and many other local causes too numerous to mention.

In Oxford, NJ we have donated material and labor to assist several local organizations. For example, we worked with the First Aid Fire and Rescue Squad to modify their ATV vehicle shed. We donated material to the Yards Creek Boy Scout Camp, which is located close to our quarry, during a recent camp rehabilitation project. We also assisted the Oxford Youth Association when they suffered severe water damage at their ball fields following recent storms, donating material and labor to help repair their drainage issues. Over the years, we have also donated material for their warming track area, snack bar and walkways. We have been a team sponsor of soccer and baseball leagues throughout Warren County for many years and also a banner sponsorship member. We have assisted the local Musconnetcong Watershed Association by sponsoring their annual "Run for the River" event for the past twelve years.

Tilcon has partnered with the Warren Hills Regional High School Scholarship Program for over ten years, supporting a worthy Oxford student's college education. In 2013, White Township was celebrating its 100th year of incorporation and was hosting an event with food, vendors, music and fireworks which Tilcon helped sponsor.

Tilcon New York Construction Division Wins 2013 Hot Mix Asphalt Showcase Award

During the 2013 construction season, Tilcon New York Inc. was awarded several contracts by the New York State Palisades Interstate Park Commission to perform asphalt paving operations at numerous locations in Harriman State Park. The projects included paving five campground roadways and asphalt resurfacing of parking areas at three lake facilities. The most substantial undertaking was the pavement rehabilitation of Arden Valley Road, a picturesque two-lane roadway that passes through the center of Harriman State Park. The project included a 2" asphalt binder course over the most severely deteriorated sections of the roadway, followed by a 1 ½" asphalt top course over the entire 5-mile roadway. Another notable element was in Tallaman State Park, where a scenic picnic area overlooking the Hudson River was resurfaced with 500 tons of asphalt top course.

The Arden Valley Road rehabilitation was a recipient of the 2013 HMA Showcase Award presented by the New York Construction Materials Association Inc.

Many talented Tilcon New York Inc. employees contributed to the very successful completion of the projects, including asphalt paving crews led by foremen David Murphy and Barry Dreher.

Tilcon Holiday Donations

In the run-up to the Holiday season 2013, Tilcon employees collected food, clothing, toys and pet supplies for three great local causes.

In total over 700lbs of food was collected and donated to the Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry, a non-profit organization that Tilcon has supported for the last several years. The Pantry provides food and nutrition advice to deserving residents of Morris County, NJ.

Employees also donated clothing and toys to 590 children of service members from Earle Naval Base and US Coast Guard personnel stationed in Bayonne,NJ. This donation was coordinated by Tilcon's Chris Aaron a longtime member of the Central Jersey Council of the Navy League of the United States, who will this year serve as the Central Jersey Council's President. Chris has coordinated holiday donations for Coast Guard children for many years. All remaining toys collected were donated to a local Woman's Shelter.

Finally, we collected pet toys, treats, food and blankets for Hi Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona, NY, a shelter which provides a loving temporary home to lost and abandoned animals.

Thank you to all Tilcon employees and their families who gave generously to support others over the Holiday season.

Karen Adams, Assistant to the President, Tilcon New Jersey has been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Community Ambassador Award 2013 by our parent company Oldcastle Materials Group. Karen was nominated for the Award by Hon. Sylvia Petillo, Mayor of Hopatcong, NJ, Karen's home town, for her numerous contributions to community life in the town. Her entry was chosen from among many received from Oldcastle Materials Group businesses around the country. Karen will be presented with her award at a dinner in her honor in Atlanta in February.

Karen is Pastor of Byram Bay Christian Church and an active member and volunteer in the Borough of Hopatcong. "Karen's community is always touched by her ability to organize and mobillize others to participate in the numerous events that she plans for residents" wrote Mayor Petillo when nominating Karen "Pastor Karen has a passion and love for the people she serves, always a smile on her face and makes everyone feel special. Her character reflects the attributes of self-sacrifice and devotion to others. Karen is involved in every aspect of many community events that raise funds and awareness."

Karen's many community events include the following:

Free Thanksgiving Day Dinner - For the last six years, Karen has arranged a free Thanksgiving dinner for up to 120 people. She organizes the volunteers, shops, prepares, cooks, serves and cleans up. She organizes rides for those who need them and delivers food to housebound residents and police officers who are working on the holiday.

Additionally, Karen organizes the weekly Ice Cream in the Park for local children and helps in the planning of and participates in the Annual Ecumenical Service, Hopatcong Days Celebration and Parade, Memorial Day Parades and Services, the Annual Hunger Walk, monthly food distribution, and various activities for children throughout the year.

As well as organizing events, Karen helps local families in need. She has been instrumental in supporting the family of local youngster who was diagnosed with a brian tumor. She accompanies family members to the hospital for surgeries. Her love and strength give the family encouragement through the most difficult days of their lives. The child's mother says of Karen "Karen has done so much for my son and my family. She is a truly amazing woman and I am honored to have her in my life. But more than anything, she has restored our faith in God and that has made all the difference."

Karen has worked for Tilcon New Jersey for ten years. When she and her husband Ken are not busy with their church and volunteer work, they enjoy spending time with their family, including seven grandchildren.

Energy curtailment specialist ECS's Green Roots Initiative, in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, planted ten trees in Tilcon New York's name in the Gallatin National Forest in Montana. The Forest lies to the North of Yellowstone National Park. The trees were planted as a thank you to Tilcon for becoming part their PowerPay! program.

Rockaway Township Officials Visit Our Mount Hope Facility

Rockaway Township officials Michael Dachisen, Mayor; Gregory Poff, Business Administrator; Joseph Fiorilla, Community Service Director; Pat Seger, Assistant Business Administrator; Peter Tabbott, Health Officer and James Lutz, Municipal Engineer visited Tilcon's Mt. Hope facility on October 17. The purpose of the visit was to tour the new asphalt plant on site and to gain a better understanding of the mining industry and of Tilcon's day-to-day operations. Many Tilcon representatives were on hand to greet them and to give them a tour of the quarry, asphalt plant, quality control lab and asphalt plant control room.

The first part of the visit was hosted by Brad Carroll, General Manger Aggregates; who took the group on a tour of the 560-acre quarry which surrounds a historic iron ore mine and is one of the largest producers of granite in the United States. Brad explained to the group the geology of the land, production capacity, blasting procedures and how the products are transported to our customers. They were able to see the heavy equipment that is used on site and discussed the maintenance and cost of large vehicles such as haul trucks, front loaders and water trucks. One of the tour stops was to the primary crusher where they witnessed the stone being transported by haul truck and fed into the top of the crusher and then crushed into smaller pieces of rocks. They also were told that rocks can be fed into smaller crushers to be further broken down in size.

Safety is paramount at Tilcon and the group learned about the very strict procedures in place to make sure that the rock is quarried safely and with as little impact as possible on our neighbors and the environment. The quarry has very strict safety guidelines and is frequently inspected by safety agencies to ensure that the rules are continually adhered too. They learned that our wheel wash system is positioned close to the plant so customers can easily drive through the water spray system to clean their wheels as they are exiting the facility. They also were told about our 24/7 security guards who make every effort to try to check each truckload exiting the facility to make sure they are loaded and tarped properly, before entering onto our local roadways.

Tim Snure, Asphalt Manager, spoke to the group about the new state-of-the-art asphalt plant on site, capable of producing 600-tons per hour and storing 2,700 tons of material in nine 300 ton hot storage silos. Tim explained that the energy-efficient Gencor Drum plant is one of the largest asphalt plants in the state. The new plant is situated close to the entrance to the facility and the scale house to provide our customers with convenient, safe and easy access in and out of the facility and a quick turnaround time.

The group also took a tour of the quality control lab which has five dedicated staff members who are all state-certified. There are Lab Stations for the Department of Transportation and other state agencies in view of the plant as well as a sampling platform at the truck exit. Rich Linton, Quality Control Manger, explained the different asphalt mixes that Tilcon produces such as conventional Super pave mixes, stone matrix asphalt (SMA), airport mixes, specialty thin lift mixes along with commercial and warm mix asphalt (WMA).

The final stop was the state-of-the-art control room and new computerized automation system. The mayor and his team asked many questions and were very impressed with the system.

Thanks to Rockaway Township for being such a good neighbor and to all the Tilcon employees involved in helping to make the visit a huge success. A great job was done by all.

Halloween - Have Fun but Stay Safe

It's Halloween again folks. So many of us in our area are especially looking forward to Halloween this year since, for many, festivities were interupted or cancelled completely due to the weather over the last two years. So, come October 31, you can be sure kids young and old will be out Trick or Treating this year.

We wish you all a fun and Happy Halloween but please remember to stay safe out there. If driving, make sure to keep a look out for pedestrians, especially after dark. There may be many more people on the streets in residential neighborhoods than usual this week and many of them may be in dark costumes. Always obey speed limits and be sure to be extra vigilant.

September Safety Month

Tilcon New Jersey's September Safety Month featured multiple activities throughout the month the month of September, all focusing on safety, health and wellness.

The month began with the traditional Safety Stand Down with the motto "When I See Something, I will Stop and Do Something".

Health and Wellness Fairs were held at our Mt. Hope, Pompton Lakes, Kearny and North Bergen facilities. The Health and Wellness Fairs are an important component of September Safety Month as they promote healthy living habits, good diet and exercise. The events included a variety of different health professionals such as massage therapists, personal trainers, nutritionists, dermatologists and nurses who conducted blood pressure checks from the local Visiting Nurses Association.

Tilcon's Associate Safety Committees set-up tables with safety presentations and had interactive games for everyone to enjoy such as safety Bingo and Jeopardy, golf putting challenges, water races, a driving simulator, sit-up and push-up challenges and an ergonomics session. Healthy food and refreshments were served to all.

Other activities during the month also included 5S annual inspections, vehicle inspections, fire extinguisher training, equipment pre-shift training, personal protective equipment inspections, fall protection equipment training and Trucker Appreciation BBQ's.

Tilcon Materials Used in Governors Island Redesign

Governors Island is a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan and closer to Brooklyn. For almost 200 years Governors Island was a military base, home to the US Army and later the Coast Guard and was not open to the public. In 2003, the island transferred into public ownership and 150 acres of the island is now managed by the Trust for Governors Island. It is accessible only by ferry from either Battery Park in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Governors Island attracts summer visitors who come to relax, bike, attend concerts, visit the historic homes and enjoy unique views of the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

A recently announced Park and Public Space Master Plan will completely transform Governors Island by redeveloping 87 acres of open spaces. Dutch architect Adriaan Geuze and his firm West 8, who won the contract, have spent several years observing the habits of summertime visitors. Their design changes the topography of the southern end of the island, replacing much of the flat landscape with a hilly one that compliments the skyscrapers of Manhattan. The first phase of park construction, which creates a new 30 acre park, including lively plazas, a Hammock Grove, play areas and ball fields cost $70 million. The observations made by the architects will lead to features such as a Hammock Grove full of hammocks, recliners, picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. There will be curved bike paths, designed to prevent bikers from riding too quickly, Frisbee areas and a gathering of food trucks and stands instead of a permanent cafeteria.

Phase I of this project began in March 2012 and is due to be complete in October 2013. Tilcon will be supplying significant amounts of material for the redesign including 250,000 tons of a blend of sand and ¾ inch stone from Clinton Point which will be transported by barge to the island over the course of the year. The general contractor for the project is Turner Construction and the earthwork sub-contractor is D'Onofrio Contracting. Mike DiRenzo, NY Sales, spent over a year working with both contractors to get Tilcon material approved for this project and to secure the order.

In addition, we will be transporting 70,000 tons of engineered topsoil, also required for the earthworks, from our Port Washington terminal to the island. This material is produced by another supplier who is unable to transport it. Mike has worked with the supplier and D'Onofrio to ensure that the material is delivered to Port Washington for us to handle the barge transportation to the island.

In the future, additional phases of the project will be announced and bid. Future phases include a new 2.2 mile Great Promenade along the waterfront and other new areas. We are hopeful that our work to date and during 2012/13 will put us in a strong position to supply additional materials in the future.

Tilcon Donates Stone to Cropsey Community Farm, New City, NY

Tilcon New York recently donated stone and screenings to Cropsey Community Farm in New City, NY. The stone will be used for various drainage projects at the farm, including being used in the new 'hoop house' currently under construction. The 'hoop house' will protect the fall and winter vegetables grown on the farm.

Cropsey Community Farm is a local community farm which operates as a CSA – Community Supported Agriculture, offering local residents the opportunity to purchase a share in its fresh, locally grown produce in return for a fee and a number of hours worked on the farm each year. The concept creates a direct link for local residents between the food they eat and their local farmer.

The farm also serves as an educational resource hosting programs and workshops for all ages to educate and encourage people to learn more about how their food is grown and get more out of their own backyard gardening.

The screenings, very small sized stone particles, will be mixed with compost and spread onto fields to provide nutrients to the soil. Many people within the farming community are turning to fine stone particles as an alternative to traditional fertilizer, to enhance soils. It is believed that the minerals in the stone can be released into the soil and used to provide plant nutrients.

Tilcon New York honored at Dominican College 41st Annual Grand Reception

Tilcon New York was honored, April 21, 2013 at the 41st Annual Grand Reception hosted by Dominican College of Rockland County at the event space Three Sixty in Lower Manhattan, New York.

Dominican College, a private university founded by Dominican nuns, honors an individual or organization which has made an outstanding contribution to the local community. This year Tilcon New York was honored for Corporate Leadership and recognized for outstanding leadership in the business community and philanthropic community efforts. Tilcon New York has been a supporter of the College for several decades and has an impressive record of giving back to the local Rockland County community through support of local schools, Scout troops, local charities and environmental groups, providing support for military families and by hosting educational events such as open houses and school tours.

The Reception is the College's main fundraising event of the year, attended by hundreds of supporters. On Tilcon's part, over 200 employees, customers and suppliers attended raising a total of $138,000, the third highest amount raised by a single organization in the event's history.

Tilcon Stone Rebuilds Seawall at Historic Queensbridge Park

The shoreline in New York's historic Queensbridge Park in Long Island City, Queens has been fenced off to the public for the last several years due to erosion and damage to the seawall, rendering it dangerous to visitors. Long-awaited repairs began in May this year which will bring the water-front back to life, rebuilding the seawall, replacing ugly chain-link fencing with benches and plantings and allowing visitors to stop, picnic and play beside the water.

The project, funded by New York City council, Mayor Bloomberg's office and the MTA, includes reconstruction of the seawall using rip-rap revetment. Rip-rap will be used to protect the shoreline by absorbing and deflecting waves and lessening the effects of erosion. It began in May 2013 and is expected to be completed by summer 2014. The project will also create a 6-foot wide promenade with benches and planting and a small wharf.

Working for contractor Phoenix Marine, Tilcon is barging stone for the project from Clinton Point Quarry directly to the job site. 5000 tons of 4's and 5's, a smaller sized Rip Rap and 5,500 tons of heavy stone fill will be used to construct the seawall.

The historic park is named for the adjacent Queensboro Bridge, completed in 1908, a major factor in the development of the Borough of Queens, as its opening created a direct link into Manhattan. The park itself opened in 1939 and features ball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, childrens playground and picnic areas. Soon it can add a newly-renovated waterfront to its list of attractions.

Tilcon Hosts Summer Boy Scout Tours

Tilcon hosted two Boy Scout tours over the summer. The tours were held at West Nyack Quarry on June 7 and Pompton Lakes Quarry on July 19. The scout troops needed to meet the necessary criteria to earn their geology badges by learning about the earth and its many layers and the different types of minerals and how they are formed.

The scouts from Garnerville, NY and Montville, NJ each saw presentations given by Tilcon staff on the geology and history of the quarries and the different types of aggregate that are produced at each facility. They discussed the importance of our industry and how crushed stone is essential in building homes, schools, hospitals, roads and erosion control projects. They also learned that Tilcon meets all requirements of state and federal environmental regulatory agencies and that environmental stewardship is an essential part of being a good corporate citizen in the communities in which we work and live.

A bus transported the scouts and family members on a tour of the quarries. They learned how the stone is blasted and then broken up into large pieces and transported by huge haul trucks to a primary crusher. There, large rocks are fed into the top and then made into smaller/finer pieces of rocks in various different sizes. They were told that sometimes the rocks may be fed into smaller crushers to be further broken down.

Our guides spoke to the scouts about how the crushed stone is usually transported to our customers by independently owned and operated trucks, but some quarries, such as our NY ones, may transport by barge or rail, along the Hudson River to our customers.

The final stage of the quarry tour was a question and answer period and many of the scouts and their families asked numerous questions. They were all given goody bags and educational materials to take home and share with their families and friends.

Tilcon Wins Awards at NAPA's Mid-Year Meeting.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) presented Tilcon with two awards at the associations Midyear Meeting in Boston, July 15-17. We won for our Community Involvement Program and our corporate website www.tilconny.com.

The Community Involvement award is given to asphalt companies that serve their communities through outstanding programs and projects. Our programs include our open house events, earth day celebrations, school and scout tours, Habitat for Humanity projects, Community Clean-up projects and fundraisers for Interfaith Food Pantry, March of Dimes, American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.

Tilcon's corporate website was a finalist for the Outstanding Website Award, which recognizes company websites that promote the asphalt industry. Tilcon's website, originally launched in 2006, was completely redesigned and refreshed last year. The new-look site was launched in September 2012. It is primarily a customer resource, providing practical information that customer's access on a day-to-day basis, along with details of company products, locations, community relations activity, careers information and contact details. The site also features a news section providing frequent updates about company activities and a home page slideshow highlighting high profile projects in which Tilcon is involved. The site links to Tilcon's social media pages on Twitter and Facebook. The website was designed by Northern Pride Design working with Marketing Consultant Ailsa Ferguson.

Tilcon Manages Major Pavement Resurfacing and Bridge Deck Replacement on Route I-287

Tilcon New Jersey is currently managing a major highway construction project on I-287 in Morris County, New Jersey. This federally-funded, $27 million project was commissioned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

It consists of milling and resurfacing a 6.8 mile stretch of I-287 from below Route 124 in Morris County to Route I-80 in Parsippany, Troy Hills. The project also includes the repair of eight bridges and one complete superstructure replacement.

The work, which began in summer 2012, will be completed by the end of 2014. It involves placing over 130,000 tons of hot mix asphalt as well as subcontracted work as follows – bridges (Joseph M Sanzari Inc), guide rail (J. Fletcher Creamer & Son), milling (Intercounty Paving Associates, LLC), markings (Statewide Striping Corp.), electrical work (Pantaleo Electric), concrete barrier (MV Contracting Inc.) and landscaping (Applied Landscape).

The majority of the work, with the exception of the bridge work, is scheduled to take place at night to minimize traffic disruption.

Transportation design and construction firms and public agencies from across the country were recognized for "excellence in community relations and public education" during the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF) 2013 PRIDE Awards dinner program, held June 3 in the Nation's Capital during the association's Federal Issues Program.

Established in 1999, the PRIDE Awards honor outstanding programs that enhance the image of the transportation design and construction industry. An independent panel of public relations professionals and journalists reviewed nominations and selected the winners in these categories:

The Community Relations Awards honor programs which demonstrate positive involvement with the community in which a public agency, firm or association is located. The Public-Media Relations/Education awards recognize activities that educate the public and opinion leaders about the significant contributions the industry makes to the economy and/or quality of life.

Tilcon Receives NJBIA's New Good Neighbor Award

Tilcon New Jersey was honored at the New Jersey Business & Industry Association's 53rd Annual New Good Neighbor Awards Luncheon on May 31, at the Pines Manor in Edison for the construction of their new state-of the-art Gencor asphalt plant at Mt. Hope Quarry. The plant is one of the largest asphalt plants in the state. The award salutes firms that have, in the last two years, contributed to the economic vitality of their communities by constructing new buildings or investing in noteworthy improvement projects. An independent panel of judges from a cross section of state associations and organizations judge the entries based on their economic benefits, job creation, architectural merit and community involvement.

Rockaway Township's Mayor Michael Dachisen nominated Tilcon for the award and for its commitment to being a good corporate citizen. The facility, which is nestled in the southern most historic portion of the community, has a mining and furnace operations which dates back to the early 18th Century on site. Another historic landmark is the Ford Faesch home, which stands at the entrance to the facility and was once owned by Mr. Faesch who was one of the first iron masters that produced ammunition for George Washington's Continental Army. Tilcon has never lost sight of the importance of the local history of the area and is pride to have it as part of their landscape.

Tilcon has contributed to numerous community based groups, the local school system as well as county-wide non-profit organizations. For example, The Township was in need of light towers for their athletic fields as they did not have permanent lighting on their fields and Tilcon assisted by donating light towers that allow them to illuminate the fields for games and practices during evening hours. Donations of material and other related resources have been donated to the Catherine A. Dwyer Elementary School for their reading garden and playground as well as recently a donation of boulders for security at the school. A few years back, Tilcon also helped finance a school solar speed limit sign for the roadway in front of the school.

Over the years, a close communication has been formed with the local township fire and rescue squads and police departments by using the facility as a resource for training purposes. Tilcon is also identified in the township's Local Emergency Operations Plan as a primary contractor capable of providing materials and equipment on a moment's notice in the event of a local major disaster. Tilcon dispatched the heavy equipment needed to clean up debris following Superstorm Sandy.

Safety is always number one priority at the site, and the new asphalt plant project included improvements to the property's roadways that facilitate the ease of traffic flow into and out of the facility for the local community, customers, visitors and employees. The new state-of-the-art equipment that was added runs more efficiently and quietly and provides additional dust control measures improving the plants overall environment and further minimizing any intrusion to the surrounding neighbors and community. Other features include a separate COD and Call-in-Order Intercom System that allows customer to speak their orders via intercom and then sends their payments via an air tube, similar to drive-through banking without the customer even getting out of their vehicles.

The new quality control laboratory has lab stations for the Department of Transportation and other state agencies that are in full view of the plant along with a sampling platform.

Tilcon opens state-of-the-art asphalt plant at Mt Hope Quarry

Wharton, NJ - Tilcon New York Inc has opened a state-of-the-art asphalt plant, which is capable of producing 600 tons per hour and storing 2,700 tons of material in nine 300 ton hot storage silos, at its Mount Hope Quarry, Wharton, NJ. The energy-efficient Gencor Drum plant, is one of the largest asphalt plants in the state.

The new plant is situated close to the entrance to the facility and the scale house, providing customers with convenient, safe and easy access and exit and a fast turnaround.

Another convenience is that customers do not have to get out of their vehicles. The plant features separate COD and Call-in-Order Intercom Systems. COD customers speak their orders via intercom and send their payments via an air tube, similar to drive-through banking.

The plant has several environmental, quality control and safety advantages:

Environmental – the plant's Gencor Ultraplant TM technology is the most fuel efficient and environmentally clean design in the hot-mix industry. The Gencor Ultraplant TM is the only hot mix plant with a positive volatile capture and recovery system that totally eliminates blue smoke and asphalt odors from the process and feeds them to the combustion process as fuel. The drum and all piping are insulated and hot oil silos are thermostatically-controlled, making the plant energy-efficient.Quality Control – the state-of-the-art quality control lab has five dedicated staff members who are state-certified. There are Lab Stations for the Department of Transportation and other state agencies in view of the plant, with a sampling platform at the truck exit.Safety – the plant does not require customers to exit their vehicles at any point while loading, and the control room is in full view of the silos, automatic ticketing and payment systems. Customers can communicate with the control room via intercom.

2013 Annual Earth Day Celebration - "Pow Wow"

Tilcon's Annual Earth Day Event 2013 celebrated the meaning of Earth Day this year, specifically how it relates to the Native American Culture in New Jersey. Many of the animals and birds that were symbols of courage, honor and freedom in the American Indian culture are amongst some of the wildlife that live right here in New Jersey.

A team of Tilcon volunteers visited second and third graders at the CA Dwyer Elementary school in Wharton, NJ on April 23 for a special Earth Day "Pow Wow". The children were given handmade headdresses that Tilcon volunteers had made ahead and delivered to the school for them to wear and decorate in their classrooms before the event. As part of the arts and crafts portion they decorated their own Indian necklaces to compliment the headdresses. Each of the necklaces had a different Indian animal symbol.

There was also a slide show presented by Maritsa Barosi, Tilcon NJ Safety Training Coordinator, which explained the many different animal symbolisms and their meaning and beliefs in the Indian culture. The children had been studying Indian Culture in their classrooms so they were very excited to learn all about the animals and what they symbolized.

Gary Lawton, Tilcon NJ Environmental Coordinator, presented a slide show of some of the many animals that live in Morris County and all over the state of New Jersey. He also made coloring books of different raptors for the children to draw and take home with them.

Tenafly Nature Center brought in a Snow Owl and Red Tail Hawk for a special live demonstration and passed around some unique artifacts and explained some of their sounds and behavior.

For the finale, the children and volunteers all joined together to perform a real Indian rain dance. Ironically, when all the volunteers were done cleaning up after the event and everyone was leaving to go to their cars it actually started raining!

Tomkins Cove Dock Clean Up

On Saturday April 6, a group of Tilcon employees and their families got together at our Tomkins Cove facility to clean up the dock area. The dock, adjacent to the Hudson River, is used to load stone onto barges bound for the New York metro area. Trash can be washed shore and accumulate at the dock and help was needed to clean up the area.

Tilcon employees who took part include Sharon Zagar, Eric Kechejian and daughter Isabella, Adriane Casterella and son Anthony Jr, John Cooney and daughter Sara, George and Mary Lindbloom, Bill Poole, Niall O'Gara and son Eoin, Jason Hope and daughter Nathalie, Steve Brooks, Anne O'Malley, John Van Zetta, Telena Hudson and Tom Hurley.

The team collected over 20 cubic yards of garbage and can be very proud of their efforts. They left the dock in great shape. Thanks to everyone who took part in the clean up.

Tilcon Donates Stone to Pearl River, NY Boy Scout Eagle Project

17 year old Chris Weldon, a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 36 in Pearl River, NY recently contacted Tilcon to inquire about a donation of materials. Chris wanted to create a nature trail in the grounds of Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Pearl River, for his Eagle Scout project. Tilcon was happy to help out and donated 12 cubic yards of 3/8" gravel for the construction of the trail. Tilcon trucking contractor Doriguzzi Trucking generously agreed to deliver the materials to the site.

Chris and his team of Scouts, parents and friends worked hard to prepare the trail by removing large boulders and cutting and clearing felled trees, laying down a layer of landscape fabric and covering it with a layer of 3/8" gravel which was pressed down and smoothed.

Congratulations to Chris for organizing the project and to the entire group for their hard work to provide a wonderful facility for the students at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School.

Tilcon Donates Boulders to Local School

Part of being a good neighbor and good corporate citizen is being proactive with the local communities surrounding the areas where we work and live. That means not just getting involved when you are called upon for assistance, but reaching out to the community to offer our support and assistance whenever possible without being asked.

Over the years, a strong relationship has been formed with the Rockaway Township School System and with the principals, teachers and staff. Because of this, we are in constant touch with one another, holding events and tours or by helping out monetarily with fundraisers and school activities as well as using our resources of labor and materials for special school projects.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Connecticut last year, many schools are now taking a look at the safety procedures that are in place at their own schools. Some are looking at how to increase security in a way that is not obtrusive to the students and staff. Mike McGovern, Principal of Catherine A. Dwyer School and also the Supervisor of Security for the Rockaway Township School System, was looking to initiate stricter security measures at all the schools in the township.

We reached out to the school to see if we could offer assistance in some way. One concern was the glass window in front of the school cafeteria, which is visible from the street. In discussion with Mr McGovern, the idea was generated of placing boulders in front of the windows to make the area more secure. Subsequently, we planned a meeting with Tilcon's operations personnel to take a look at the area in discussion and to see how the boulders could be strategically placed and to see how many would be needed and what sizes and weight. The plan was to make it look aesthetically pleasing as well as enhancing protection and safety.

The boulders were placed on March 5, and each was placed meticulously one by one with the help of Tilcon's expert fork-lift operator, Mike Sudziarski and Mt. Hope operations personnel: Arnold Connelly, Plant Manager; Bucky Buccafusca, Supervisor and Johnny Geswelli, Mechanic. It took approximately three hours to place them all and to make sure that they were spaced evenly and safely.

We are planning on doing some landscaping around the rocks and have asked one of our Oldcastle sister companies for their support and assistance. Oldcastle Stone Products has offered to donate some of their decorative river rock to finish off the area.

Plans are in motion to have a ribbon-cutting in June, and to invite the community, township public officials and the media to the event.

Volunteers Needed - Help Clean Up Tomkins Cove Dock

LOCATION: Parking lot of Farley Middle School on Route 210 (Gate Hill Rd.), Stony Point (Tilcon employees/volunteers can meet at Tomkins Cove Quarry - Located at Foot of Elm Street, Tomkins Cove, NY 10986)

WHEN: Saturday April 6 from 9am to 12 noon.

WHAT:

We are looking for volunteers to clean up the shoreline along our Tomkins Cove Quarry Dock. Various items have washed ashore at this location and need to be properly disposed of. Tilcon will supply you with work gloves for the day. Feel free to bring a garbage grabber or rake with you, but most of the debris can be picked up by hand.

As a courtesy, all volunteers will receive a Tilcon baseball hat and t-shirt to be worn for a group photo at the end of the cleanup day. This photo will likely be used in the Tilcon Times newsletter and/or the Keep Rockland Beautiful website and brochure.

At noon all volunteers are invited to a Keep Rockland Beautiful picnic located at Lowland Park (recently renamed Charles Echer Park). They will be serving hotdogs, chips and water. The Girl Scouts will provide baked goods for dessert. The picnic is also a time to share stories about strange items found during the cleanup. The picnic usually lasts about an hour.

Electronic Technician Software Training Held in New York

Tilcon New York Mobile Equipment hosted training from Caterpiller dealer HO Penn on their proprietary Electronic Technician (E.T.) diagnostic software on Tuesday March 5th, 2013.

The training was split into two classes and held at Haverstraw Training Center and Clinton Point Quarry. It included an introduction to Caterpiller's ET diagnostic software and details of how to management of it. Further on-the-job training will allow our mechanics more time to learn the system.

The software is designed to allow us a more accurate way to diagnose problems with our machinery using past and existing failure codes displayed in the log. We can quickly and accurately determine problems, which will allow us to make repairs faster and return equipment more quickly back into production, reducing downtime.

Tilcon Wins NSSGA Awards for Community Relations and Environmental Stewardship

The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association announced on January 29, the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners of NSSGA's Safety, Environmental and Community Relations Excellence Awards, in addition to the association's top honor-The Stars of Excellence for operations that accumulate Gold Awards in Safety Environmental or Community Relations over a five-year period.

Tilcon was awarded two Silver awards for Excellence in Community Relations for our Oxford, NJ and Haverstraw, NY operations and a Silver award for Environmental Excellence for our Mt. Hope, Wharton, NJ facility. Each award scored very highly in their respective categories and will be re-submitted again next year to be considered for the gold award level.

The NSSGA's awards program recognizes aggregates operations throughout the United States and Canada for their extraordinary commitment to Safety, for their superior performance as environmental stewards and for their community involvement and support activities that have enhanced the image of the aggregates industry during 2011 and 2012. The Stars of Excellence and all Gold Awards in each category were presented at the NSSGA's 2013 Annual Convention in San Antonio Texas in March.

Congratulations to each of these operations for their commitment to being good corporate citizens and recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship by promoting safe and healthy working conditions as well as being a good neighbor by supporting our communities where we work and live.

Awards season is not just for Hollywood. We have it in the Construction industry too! This month saw the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) Annual Meeting take place in Scottsdale, Arizona. Among the national award winners announced at the meeting were the recipients of the 2012 Diamond Achievement and Diamond Quality Commendation awards.

Diamond Program

The National Asphalt Pavement Association has created its Diamond Commendation Program – the Diamond Achievement, and Diamond Quality Awards – to help companies in the asphalt industry set and achieve the highest standards.

The Diamond Commendations encourage and recognize excellence. Continuous improvement in all aspects of operations is the goal. The commendations are self-assessments which require third-party verification by community leaders or other individuals who are not affiliated with the company. Tilcon Wins Quality in Construction Award for Major Project at Newark Liberty International Airport

Tilcon New Jersey has won a prestigious 2012 National Asphalt Pavement Association Quality in Construction award for a major project at Newark Liberty International Airport which involved the rehabilitation of runway 4R/22L.

The project included the reconstruction of the entire runway, a runway intersection, construction of two new high-speed taxiways, relocation and reconstruction of three taxiways and rehabilitation of nine additional taxiways.

The work was completed during limited six-hour nightly closures and during 16 weekend closures of 34 hours each. Tilcon placed three different types of surface asphalt mixes and two base courses on the runway and used state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that all density, joint, grade and rideability requirements were met.

Tilcon New Jersey Wins Six 2012 NAPA Quality in Construction Awards

The National Asphalt Pavement Association's Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. According to Kurt Bechthold , 2012 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors "The Quality in Construction Award recognizes paving jobs completed in line with best practices and standards known to yield high-quality asphalt pavements".

The following six Tilcon New Jersey Inc construction projects are each a recipient of a prestigious, national 2012 Quality in Construction Award, announced and awarded at this week's NAPA Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. This diverse group of projects shows the extent and breadth of Tilcon's paving expertise.

Route 1, Edison, New Jersey

Tilcon New Jersey won the award for the mill and overlay of Route 1, Edison, NJ. Because the road is one of the most heavily travelled stretches of road in the state, we had to perform all work between 9pm and 5am to minimize disruption to the malls, small businesses and restaurants along its length. We used green paving practices on this project, incorporating 15% RAP – recycled asphalt pavement in the mixes. The use of RAP saves money and decreases the amount of virgin materials needed for the project. Tilcon New Jersey completed the project safely, producing a smooth pavement that met incentive clauses for quality.

Route 18 from Colts Neck to Old Bridge, New Jersey

This project involved the mill and overlay from Colts Neck to Old Bridge in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties, including the ramps at exits 19, 22, 25 and 29. As the road is both a busy commuter route and a major connector to the Jersey Shore, we had to work Monday through Thursday nights through the summer to avoid disrupting traffic. Other challenges involved working around 15-plus miles of guard rails, as well as work in the median and along the shoulders. We incorporated 15 percent reclaimed asphalt pavement into the pavement, reducing the need for virgin aggregate and binder. Despite the cumulative 26 of rain dumped in the area during the summer by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, the project was completed on time and earned significant bonuses for the pavement's compaction and ride quality.

Hamburg Turnpike, Morris County, New Jersey

The most challenging part of this project was its location, which included the road right in front of one of our own asphalt plants. The company paved half the road in front of the driveway, and then paved the other side later in the evening, after the first pavement had cooled. The project also included a railroad crossing and two sets of ramps for Interstate 287 and the use of inlaid striping tape which is placed while the asphalt is still hot. We completed the project in a single night, producing a smooth asphalt pavement for motorists.

Berry's Creek Road, next to the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

Tilcon New Jersey won the award for the mill and fill of Berry's Creek Road, next to the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. We had to schedule work around racetrack and stadium events at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. We also incorporated sustainable paving practices into the project with the use of asphalt mixes that include 15 percent reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The use of RAP kept 625 tons of asphalt out of landfills and conserved natural resources by reducing the need for virgin aggregates and binder. Despite the job's challenges, Tilcon produced a smooth, high-quality pavement that will be appreciated by those coming to the complex.

Branch Book Park, Essex County, New Jersey

We had to be particularly vigilant during the paving of the project in a local park, because of vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic in the area. We were also under a tight timetable because park officials wanted the work completed before the park's cherry trees bloomed. We incorporated sustainable practices into the project by using mixes that contained 30% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). The use of RAP kept 850 tons of asphalt out of landfills and reduced the need for virgin materials. We produced a smooth asphalt pavement for the park in time for its Annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

Orangeburg Road, Old Tappan, NJ

We won the award for our work on two miles of Orangeburg Road, Old Tappan, NJ. We had to maintain traffic as we worked on the mill and overlay project. We incorporated some green paving techniques into the project, using asphalt mixes that contained 15 percent recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). The use of RAP kept almost 700 tons of asphalt out of landfills, saved money and reduced the use of virgin aggregate and binder material. Through our efforts, we produced a smooth, high-quality asphalt pavement for motorists in the area.

Tilcon Holiday Donations 2012

Each year, for the last several years, Tilcon has organized a holiday donation drive to help out those in need during the festive season. December 2012 was no exception. This time, however, in the wake of hurricane Sandy, the local need was greater than ever, with many more people in our area in need of extra help during the holidays. Our 2012 holiday donations benefitted three local organizations – Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry, the Central Jersey Navy League and the Jersey Shore Animal Center.

Morris Interfaith Food Pantry Food Drive

More than 5,000 families in Morris County, NJ rely on the Interfaith Food Pantry for supplemental groceries year round. Last year the organization distributed nearly 800,000 pounds of food to low-income working families and senior citizens living on fixed incomes. It also delivers to housebound seniors and the disabled and is currently distributing more than seven tons of food per week.

We donated over 550 pounds of non-perishable canned food items during our holiday food drive in 2011 and in 2012 the amount was close to 700 pounds. All Tilcon employees were proactive in the month-long fundraising effort, donating at drop-off points at various facilities in New York and New Jersey.

In addition to our holiday activities, we also make donations to the Pantry whenever our Open House events are held, asking visitors to bring non-perishable food items to donate. We have also delivered carloads of personal care items such as toiletries, cosmetics, pillows and coffee pots to the Battered Women's Shelter during a previous Tilcon employee fundraiser.

Central Jersey Navy League Toy Drive

Tilcon has worked with Central Jersey Navy League for a number of years. The Navy League is a civilian organization dedicated to supporting our sea service personnel and their families. In the holiday season, the League organizes an Angel Program to donate toys to children of Coast Guard and Navy families in New Jersey.

The donations of toys and clothing collected in December were especially welcome in 2012 as hurricane Sandy took a terrible toll on local Coast Guard Stations and the families who work at them. US Coast Guard Stations at Sandy Hook, NJ and Bayonne, NJ sustained severe damage during the storm. Sandy Hook was totally destroyed, as was much of its housing. Many Coast Guard families working at these facilities also live at the Shore and were forced to move in with families, or to hotels or alterative housing, following the storm. Earle Naval Base also sustained damage.

In total Tilcon, together with local organizations including Verizon and Amerada Hess and local church groups, donated over 700 gifts to the Angel program. A holiday party was held at Earle Naval Base before the holidays, with Santa riding a fire truck to distribute toys. Tilcon was contacted by several military families who expressed thanks for our help. Tilcon donated a further 3 car loads of gifts to a hurricane Sandy drop-off point, destined for hurricane victims and their families on the Jersey Shore.

Jersey Shore Animal Shelter Food Drive

Many Tilcon employees are pet lovers at heart and when we heard about the devastation along the Jersey Shore and that many pets were affected, we knew we had to help. We chose the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter to be one of the organizations we supported in December because it is a no kill Shelter and has been fostering pets of homeowners affected by Sandy, many of whom had lost everything.

We collected a lot of food and treats as well as bowls, blankets, kitty litter and toys. Tilcon employee Debbie Gee dropped off our donations at the Shelter. They were thrilled.

Wildlife Photos from our Mount Hope, NJ Wildlife Habitat Site

Tilcon and Oldcastle Materials Group are committed to improving wildlife habitat through the enrichment of pre-existing habitat and the establishment of new habitat on the company's land. To put this commitment into action, in 2004 Oldcastle began partnering with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat. Created in 1988, the WHC helps large landowners, particularly corporations, manage their unused lands in an ecologically sensitive manner. To learn more, visit www.wildlifehc.org.

The Wildlife Habitat Site at our Mount Hope Quarry, NJ was certified in 2010 by the WHC as a Wildlife at Work accredited site. It is the first of its kind to be created at Tilcon. The project began in 2009 when a team of employees embarked on three major projects at Mt Hope – fish management, bird boxes and a nature camera. The project was re-certified in October 2012 by the Wildlife Habitat Council for 'outstanding commitment' to a wildlife habitat enhancement program.

Among the types of wildlife on our site are Canadian geese, mute swans, eagles, blue jays, great blue herons, owls, red wing blackbirds, hawks, turkeys, American toads, green frogs, black bears, white-tailed deer, green darners, eastern pondhawks, dragonflies and numerous species of fish. Trees include red maples, yellow birch, ironwoods and scrub oak.

As part of our September Safety Month 2012 activities, 5S inspections were performed and flags/plaques given to the facilities that demonstrated the best use of the 5S program during the calender year.

What is 5S?

5S is a program that was rolled out by our parent company Oldcastle Materials Group, to Tilcon, in 2008. It is a concept designed in Japan, that has been proven to be effective in many companies worldwide. Simply put, 5S is a structured approach to reducing waste and optimizing productivity by establishing and maintaining a well organized workplace. The implementation of 5S throughout Tilcon has helped to create a safe work environment for everyone.

The 5 Key areas of 5S are Sort, Simplify, Sweep, Standardize and Self-Discipline.

Sort

The first step in the 5S process involves taking inventory of your work area. This means - Sort through everything – make a "use or lose" decision for each item. Dispose of or reassign surplus items.

This first step is really basic housekeeping; but it is important in that it provides immediate benefits in the form of 1) reclaimed space and 2) reduced inventory. There also may be revenue to be realized through the disposal or reassignment of unwanted items.

Simplify

This involves arranging tools, parts and instructions in such a way that the most frequently used items are the easiest and quickest to locate. The purpose of this step is to eliminate time wasted in obtaining the necessary items for an operation.

Sweep

Clean the workspace and all equipment and keep it clean, tidy and organized. At the end of each shift, clean the work area and be sure everything is restored to its place. This makes it easy to know what goes where and ensures that everything is where it belongs.

Standardize

All work stations for a particular job should be identical. All employees doing the same job should be able to work in any station with the same tools that are in the same location in every station. Everyone should know exactly what his or her responsibilities are for adhering to the first 3 S's.

Tilcon NJ Operations Holiday Party

Tilcon NJ Operations team held their 2012 Holiday Party December 14 at the Safety Training Center at Mt Hope Quarry. Clif Morris, Southern Area Manager and Arnold Connelly, Plant Manager spoke to the team to let them know how proud they were of all that has been achieved in 2012, and future plans for the New Year. The team were given shirts in recognition of their hard work throughout the year.

The event was put together by Angel Dougherty, Operations Administrative Assistant, who made it a special holiday gathering for all who attended. Thank you Angel for all your hard work.

Tilcon Accepts Business Sponsor 2012 Award from Keep Rockland Beautiful

Tilcon has been working for several years with local environmental non-profit organization Keep Rockland Beautiful. This year we were awarded their 'Business Sponsor 2012' Award, which was accepted on Tilcon's behalf by John Van Zetta, Environmental Coordinator. Here is Keep Rockland Beautiful's account of the awards evening, which details Tilcon's work over the last few years and that of their other award winners, giving an insight into the work of this important local group.

Keep Rockland Beautiful hosted its Annual Awards Gala on December 7th at Rockland Country Club, Sparkill. Honorees included Town of Clarkstown (for their New City Streetscape Revitalization Project), Rockland Road Runners, Tilcon New York, Tony Teplitz and Tim Englert (full list attached).

In his acceptance speech, Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack emphasized the importance of the New City project in spurring local business owners to invest their own revitalization projects (video link). Other business involved in the New City project included Behan Planning and Design, Maser Consulting and Tilcon (who also received the Business Sponsor Award at the Gala). John Van Zetta, Environmental Coordinator, accepted the award on behalf of Tilcon New York. Tilcon has been sponsoring KRB for 6 years, including being an Event Sponsor of the Great American Cleanup in 2012 and an Event Sponsor for the Annual Awards Gala in 2011 and 2012. John spoke with enthusiasm about his recent collaboration with KRB when Tilcon volunteers teamed up with KRB to remove large tires from the Hudson River in Haverstraw. He is looking forward to expanding the partnership between Tilcon and Keep Rockland Beautiful in the future.

Tim Englert received the Public Art Award for his Knickerbocker benches. "I've had a blast watching new friends open up a log for the first time" - Tim spoke of the satisfaction and connection people feel when they are involved in creating a bench. He recognized the contributions of 6th grader Matthew Lavender who was involved in creating many benches.

Francine Cuccia, Principal of Link Elementary World School received the Education Award. She thanked her 'Link Family' and KRB Executive Director Sonia Cairo for bringing 'real life experiences with working with the environment" to the Link students (video).

Bob Congionti (Parks Commissioner, Town of Montebello) and Nicole Jessie (teacher at James A Farley school in Stony Point) received Cleanup Awards. Nicole spoke of the pride her students feel in being involved in "cleaning up where they live". She commended the Town of Stony Point and Larry Brissing, Stony Point Highway Superintendent for their support during the Great American Cleanup.

Tony Teplitz received a Beautification Award for his landscaping project at his business on Demarest Mill Road in Nanuet. Several local business worked on the project, including Danny Clapp landscaping, Curti's Landscaping and Yaboo Fence Company. Tony often jokes that customers call up to say they can't find his scrap metal business when they are actually right outside! Teplitz has been a strong supporter of Keep Rockland Beautiful and was an Event Sponsor for both the 2012 Great American Cleanup and the 2012 Annual Awards Gala. Currently, Tony is working with KRB to establish a program to accept the donation of cars and toher scrap metal to benefit the organization.

John Melican of Rockland Road Runners received the Adopt-A-Spot award. The Rockland Road Runners have been cleaning up a 1.3 mile stretch of road at Rockland Lake State Park for the past 12 years.

Boy Scouts Tour Pompton Lakes Quarry

Boy Scouts from the Pompton Lakes, Riverdale area visited Pompton Lakes Quarry on November 29th, to earn their troop geology badges. The group was treated to a presentation by Northern Area Manager, Brad Carroll who spoke to the boys about the history of the quarry and the geology of the land. They also learned about the different types of aggregates that are produced at the site and how we mine and crush the stone into different sizes and distribute the stone to our customers.

They were all amazed to hear that our very own "Pompton Pink" Granite was used on the steps of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C. All the scouts asked many questions and were very interested in the blasting procedure and the heavy equipment that is used on site.

After the presentation Brad and Plant Manager, Grant Shields took the boys and their parents on a van tour of the facility and everyone was able to climb up on a front loader and sit in the driver seat of the vehicle to see how it feels to be in such a huge piece of equipment. The scouts left with informational handout material, goody bags and a better understanding of the quarry.

Safe Winter Driving Tips

With both temperatures and snow falling, it's time to start thinking about keeping safe on the roads this winter. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) offers tips for safe winter driving, including:

• Never follow a snowplow too closely or attempt to pass one. Remember that the highway ahead of the plow is usually snow-covered;

• ...Adjust speed for road conditions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles;

• Schedule extra time for winter travel and be patient during ice and snow removal operations;

• Assume that bridge surfaces are slippery, as they freeze more quickly than road surfaces;

• Watch for black ice, which can be difficult to see but makes conditions slippery when pavement temperatures are below freezing;

• Have a cell phone handy, if possible, but do not text while driving; distracted driving becomes even more dangerous during storm events;

• Never venture from your vehicle if snowbound;

• Equip your car with emergency supplies including sand, shovel, flares, booster cables, rope, ice scraper, portable radio, flashlight, blankets and extra warm clothes;

• Inform a responsible person of your destination, intended route, and estimated time of arrival; and

• Keep calm and do not panic in case of a vehicle breakdown, accident, or if you become snowbound.

Tilcon would like to advise contractors and subcontractors that our recycle facilities are open and available to receive construction project material as well as emergency relief demolition material from local hurricane disaster sites.

Tilcon New Jersey's Keasbey and Kearny Class B Recycling facilities are operational, as is Tilcon NY's Bronx Recycle . In addition, Tilcon New Jersey can provide full portable crushing services upon request.

Hurricane Sandy - Be Prepared

As Hurricane Sandy continues to travel up the East Coast, there is a chance that the New York/New Jersey area could be affected. Please make sure that you take steps to be prepared. The storm could hit anytime between Sunday afternoon, October 28 and Tuesday October 30.

Consider taking some/all of the following steps in order to prepare your home and family for the storm:

* Outside the home: Secure ALL LOSE items: including: Halloween decorations, lawn furniture, grills, garbage containers, toys, sporting supplies (basketball hoops), etc.

* Windows and doors: Secure and Close. Screen doors secure and lock.

* Gutters: Have them cleaned out if possible.

* Sump Pumps: Ready to go.

* Generators: Ready to go.

* Call or visit your electricity provider's website and familiarize yourself with the number to call to report power outages.

* Electrical Appliances: If the storm becomes severe, consider unplugging all major electrical appliances.

* Flashlights: Available with charged batteries.

* Portable radio: Available with charged batteries.

* Cellphones: Available and charged.

* Vehicles: Full tank of Gas and parked in a safe area.

* Food: Available: plenty of water and foods that do not require cooking.

* Prescription medications: If you take prescription medications, verify you have enough for at least a week.

* Pets/Animals: Consider their safety, be prepared with shelter and food.

* Young or Elderly Family Members: Specific age groups make require additional help and supplies. Be prepared for such items.

* Basement Flooding: Verify all items that can be damaged are at a higher level in case flooding occurs. Unplug any items such as washers or dryers.

* Check on your neighbors

* Make arrangements in case power outages occur or significant flooding - have a plan and location available for you and your family and pets.

George received the prestigious President's Award for his leadership within the construction, materials supply and paving services industries in New Jersey. Employee Health Fairs - Tilcon New Jersey September Safety Month

As part of Tilcon New Jersey's September Safety Month, employee Health Fairs are being held throughout the month at various locations around New Jersey.

At the events, employees are able to consult with a chiropractor, dermatologist or a personal trainer, enjoy a massage and find out about healthy eating. A vet is even on hand to answer questions abut pet health. Blood pressure screenings, CPR demonstrations and fitness tests are also available along with plenty of information about safety in the workplace and at home.

As well as learning more about how to stay healthy, staff at all the events are able to enjoy a nutritious meal.

Tilcon Donates Memorial Stone for Strawtown Elementary School Playground Dedication

On June 18, Tilcon NY representatives were at the Strawtown Elementary School in West Nyack, NY, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the dedication of new playground equipment. Tilcon assisted by donating the three-ton monument stone for the dedication plague which thank all the family, friends and businesses that helped contribute to the school fundraising project.

The school PTA raised the money through a variety of activities including after-school enrichment programs, a school fair, the sale of coupon books, and kid's art displays. The playground consists of a new balance beam, stepping mushrooms and musical instruments that cost $8000 with an additional 2500 spent on installation.

In 2003, Tilcon was also at the school for the ribbon cutting of the original wooden playground equipment that was installed for the school. Tilcon was one of the first local businesses to come forward to support the project. Tilcon was presented with a certificate for a Foundation-level sponsorship and donation of the monument rock for the plague.

Tilcon New York representatives that played key roles in the project were: Eric Kechejian, Tilcon Safety Director, whose two children attend the school, William Poole, Chief Operating Officer, John Rufer, West Nyack Plant Manager and Ferguson Landscaping and Steve Weiss Landscaping for donating their services.

Tilcon Manages Major Project at Newark Liberty International Airport

Since April this year, Tilcon New Jersey has been managing a project at Newark Liberty International Airport which involves the rehabilitation of Runway 4R-22L and the upgrading of various Delay Reduction High-Speed Taxiways.

This complex project involves coordinating multiple mixes from multiple plants to a very aggressive schedule. The work involves milling and resurfacing a main airport runway – 4R-22L, realigning, reconstructing and resurfacing of taxiways and the modification and upgrading of drainage and electrical systems.

In total, we will be providing and laying 110,900 tons of asphalt from both Mount Hope and Keasbey asphalt plants in addition to material provided by Weldon Asphalt from plants at Watchung and Kearney. Tilcon New Jersey is the general contractor on the project and we have subcontracted out electrical, milling, pavement marking, seal coating and drainage work to various subcontractors. Electrical work will be completed by Con-El Electric of Hillside, NJ, milling by Paolella Profiling of Hackensack, NJ and Rockborn Excavating and Trucking of Wharton, NJ. Pavement marking will be managed by Safety Marking Inc of Bridgeport, CT, seal coating by Tri-State Asphalt Inc of Wyckoff, NJ and drainage work by Dumor Contracting of Elizabeth, NJ.

In addition to the challenge of coordinating the laying down of multiple mixes from multiple plants, which requires tremendous planning, work hours are limited during the week and the project must be completed to a very challenging schedule. Work during the week includes night time working. Weekend work includes full and partial closure of the runway and is a continuous operation until the completion of the project. At any given time numerous Tilcon staff and sub-contractor staff can be found working on the job including paving crews, milling crews, electricians, excavation and grading crews, security, supervisors and admin staff.

The project, contract number EWR-941.152, is valued at over $26 million and is financed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Work began in April 2012 and will be completed by the end of the year.

Tilcon Paves George Washington Bridge Upper Deck

Tilcon began work on a major project on the George Washington Bridge in May of this year. The project involves the removal and replacement of portions of the upper level eastbound and westbound deck panels. This $78 million job, for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was awarded in early 2011 to American Bridge Co., the main contractor.

The George Washington Bridge, which spans the Hudson River from west side of Manhattan to New Jersey, is the world's most travelled bridge, crossed by 285,000 vehicles every day. Tilcon's role is to remove existing asphalt and bond coat, sandblast the steel deck and re-pave the panels with two separate waterproofing asphalt mixtures, a subcontract worth $4 million. Over the course of the work, Tilcon expects to lay approximately 2,000 tons of hot mix asphalt which will be produced by Newark Asphalt and our Mt Hope batch plant.

Due to the extremely high traffic volume, a specialty asphalt mix, Rosphalt50, has been used for the majority of the project. Rosphalt50 is a waterproof, wearing course asphalt particularly suited to sites with heaving loading where high performance is required. A key application for the product is bridge decks.

Complexities of the job include the fact that the bridge cannot ever be completely closed, requiring instead construction to be scheduled during limited nighttime and weekend hours. The nature of the site also means significant preparation and limited work space.

Tilcon's work is expected to be completed this year, with the remaining structural work of the project scheduled to be completed in 2015 by the General Contractor, American Bridge Co.

On July 27th, Tilcon held a breakfast for the this year's interns at the Hilton in Woodcliff Lakes, New Jersey.

The internship program at Tilcon has never been stronger this year with nineteen interns working at many of our New York and New Jersey locations. As part of the orientation process, each intern is required to take New Miner Safety Training courses and are also required to present a power point presentation at the breakfast on what they have done at Tilcon during the summer months.

The attendees at the breakfast were former interns currently working at Tilcon, Intern Supervisors and Executive Management team including: Chris Madden, Oldcastle-Northeast Division President; George Thompson, President, Tilcon New Jersey; John Cooney, President Tilcon New York; William Poole, Chief Operating Officer, Tilcon New York.

Tilcon's internship program gives students meaningful on-the-job experience and prepares them for a career in our industry. Many of our Tilcon interns have returned to work for us at the end of their studies and developed successful careers at Tilcon.

Tilcon Sponsors Pet Rock Night at the Rockland Boulders

On Monday July 30, 2012 Tilcon sponsored Pet Rock Night at the Rockland Boulders, our local Rockland County baseball team.

Pet Rocks were distributed free to the first 1500 fans at Provident Bank Park ahead of the Boulders double-header against the Newark Bears.

The Boulders won the first game 3-2 with Ryan Scoma scoring a walk off home run to win it. The second game was also won by the Boulders, 8-0.

Tilcon NY Partners with Keep Rockland Beautiful to Clean up Haverstraw Bay

On June 23rd Tilcon New York employees teamed up with Keep Rockland Beautiful volunteers to cleanup a section of marsh area in Haverstraw Bay on the Hudson River. Haverstraw Bay is adjacent to Tilcon's Haverstraw quarry property. Keep Rockland Beautiful is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote a cleaner and more beautiful Rockland County, NY. The effort was coordinated by John Van Zetta, Tilcon's Environmental Coordinator. Tilcon volunteers included Niall O'Gara, John VanZetta, Evan Hansen and Vitale Oprisek. Keep Rockland Beautiful's volunteers were Gerry Collins, Eoin O'Gara and Tom Kyle.

The cleanup participants met on the banks of the Hudson on a beautifully clear June Saturday morning. The object of the exercise was to remove a number of truck and car tires that were visible at low tide in Haverstraw Bay. The cleanup start time of 8am was scheduled to coincide with low tide so that participants could have access to the tires.

The cleanup team dug around the half buried tires using shovels and then used drift wood and lots of brute strength to pry each tire from the mud. The task was all the more challenging because of the slowly rising tide and the very heavy mud that had to be removed from inside the tires. By 10:15am the water was at shin height but the very soggy and very dirty participants had managed to free eight large tires and roll them to the river bank. The tires and other light debris were then removed from the bank by one of Tilcon's long reach excavators.

The cleanup effort was a great success and allowed Tilcon to further strengthen its relationship with Keep Rockland Beautiful. After just a few hours of hard, but very rewarding work, the marsh was free of tires and had been returned to its natural beautiful state.
