Google is catching up with the storage wars with latest attempt at launching Google Drive. To differentiate its service from the rest of the pack they are integrating their storage service with its current products, namely the Google Docs, Gmail and Picasa wherein they share storage spaces. Google Drive is currently priced at $2.49 per month with 25GB of storage. On top of that, current applications get a storage upgrade: with Gmail now at 10GB quota and 5GB on Google drive with free accounts.

See a comparison of the features of the current products on storage applications.

Except for the new interface at https://drive.google.com nothing is changed really, you will see the same layout on your Gmail, Docs and Picasa Accounts. the only difference is that you get extra space of additional 3GB on Gmail and 5GB on Drive. A new storage plan is introduced with an increase in the free Gmail quota at 10GB from the previous 7GB space. If you were like me who signed up for Google storage plan before April 24, 2012 then you will notice that the old pricing scheme has been replaced with a new structure and you are no longer able to upgrade to the old plans. Here is a rundown of the old compared to the new pricing schemes.

Old storage plans

Free storage:

7+ GB in Gmail

8 TB – $2048

16 TB – $4096

New storage plans

Free storage:

10 GB in Gmail

5 GB in Google Drive

1 GB in Picasa

Pricing Structure:

25 GB – $2.49

100 GB – $4.99

200 GB – $9.99

400 GB – $19.99

1 TB – $49.99

2 TB – $99.99

4 TB – $199.99

8 TB – $399.99

16 TB – $799.99

As you can see there is an obvious increase in storage prices from the old storage plans, so better don’t let your current storage expire or change plans by downgrading or upgrading. You can upgrade your current plans and subscribe to Google Drive by logging to your Google account as currently Google Drive does not allow subscription from its URL at https://drive.google.com

I’ve been trying out this new phone for weeks now. So far, it’s enough for my needs and i basically just need it for calling, not so much of a requirement as all cellphones allows us to call. It’s a good phone considering it has a 1GHz for its processor which is more than enough for the current applications installed in it and its capacitive touch screen is fast enough that would make you enjoy playing touch phone game apps. The only big drawback is that it does not have GPS capability, on top of that it has no WiFi, most of you will probably have to make a pass on this one those two missing features. The only reason why i have this phone is that its free with my wife’s loyalty phone plan at Globe.

Complains? so why use it? Despite the drawbacks, it is still a good phone considering that its comes preloaded with Angry Birds, although its just a trial version you can buy the full product at OVI for less than $0.50 not so expensive as compared to the Android or iStore counterparts. I was also able to load my old apps from my N3300 music phone. Since Asha 300 is a Series 40 phone, therefore all my .jar files will now run with a more bigger screen size at 240 x 320 pixels. I have also loaded a bunch of my audio books 3GB in total and a couple of my favorite MP3s, it can handle up to 32GB of micro-USB memory, but i think you can still add more than that. i just wish there was a lastfm app out there so i could link my played tracks to my account. With its builtin Bluetooth support i can enjoy hours of music with this phone. I haven’t tested its video and camera capabilities, although, taking pictures are a bit blurry in dimly lit areas.

Since it has no builtin Wifi, i was forced to subscribe to Globe’s data rates at Php5 per 15 minutes, later i found out that i can also subscribe for the 50MB a month data plan for PhP99. Yes, you guessed it, its too small for a bandwidth but surprisingly I was able to download a couple of apps and games from the Nokia OVI store. As far as i can recall they were QR Code reader, Angry Birds Full, Opera Browser were a few. Its not a bad service after all. Now, a am experiementing on making a PAN network with my PC acting as a bridge to my phone so i can have a free internet connection but no luck so far.

It seems intuitive enough. More megapixels is better, right?

But, as with most things electronic, the magic number just seems to keep on growing… 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 18, 21?!? How many megapixels do you really need?

Approximate Resolution of Various Output Types

One way to think about this question is to estimate how many pixels (and therefore the number of megapixels) it takes to effectively render a few different common output formats.

Facebook. Let’s say you want to share a picture over the Internet. If you’re on Facebook, the largest possible image size is 720 pixel x 720 pixels. That’s 921,600 pixels… or a whopping 0.9 megapixels.

Other Web Sharing. Let’s say you just want to share some pictures over the web and look at them on your computer. While the upper limit on the resolution will vary, it will be limited by the size/resolution of your monitor. My 19? flat panel and video card on my desktop support a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. That’s a total of 1,296,000 pixels, or 1.3 megapixels. Hmm… now we’re getting closer to modern times.

Basic 4×6 Print. Ok, let’s up the ante and contemplate a print product. Typical print resolution is 300 ppi (pixels per inch). That means that a 4 inch by 6 inch picture will require approximatley 1200 pixels by 1800 pixels. That’s 2,160,000 pixels, or a shade over 2 megapixels.

Large 8×10 Print. Want something bigger? How about a nice 8×10 print that can fit in a matted 11×14 frame. At 300 ppi, that requires 2400 x 3000 pixels. That’s 7.2 megapixels. Now we’ve actually entered the realm of modern cameras. But, still, most consumer level digital point and shoot cameras deliver at least 7 or 8 megapixels.

Uber-Large Poster Print (24 x 30 inches). And now for something obscene. Let’s make a really big poster print. At Costco, I can print an image at 24×30 inches for $8.99. That would require 7200 x 9000 pixels or 64,800,000 pixels. So, a full 300 ppi image would take, umm, 65 megapixels. Oops. They actually look pretty good at ~12-15 megapixels as long as you don’t hold your nose an inch from the picture.

In other words, pretty much every conceivable normal output format (from web images to an 8×10 print) requires less than 8 megapixels. If you’re a professional photographer creating movie posters, large print ads, or the like, you could probably benefit from a higher resolution. And there are some reasons why you’d like to have a little extra resolution to spare. But, while more is better, that doesn’t mean it’s necessary…

Food for Thought

In 2004, Canon’s flagship camera was the EOS 1D Mark II. That camera, near the top of the line of professional Canon dSLR, offered 8.2 megapixels. It’s successor, the EOS 1D Mark II also topped out at 8.2 megapixels, and the flagship line didn’t increase until the EOS-1D Mark III was introduced in 2007 with 10 megapixels.

Up until a few years ago, 8-10 megapixels was enough for professional photographers the world round. So, although today’s flagship camera offers 16 megapixels and the more recent 5D MK II offers 21 megapixels, these aren’t exactly necessary. It’s nice, but it’s something of a luxury, and often times it’s entirely unnecessary.

Does that mean you should turn away a high megapixel camera? No, not really… but you can find some few-years-old digital bodies in good used condition for a decent price. If there’s no other reason for you to choose the newer body, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars by buying a slightly less-than-modern camera that offers less-but-enough megapixels.

While displaying uptime in Unix, Linux, and Mac is fairly easy with the uptime command at the console, its Windows counterpart is somewhat unique. To view the uptime for windows, you will need some wit by looking though its statistics as there was no command like the Unix, Linux, and Mac uptime which even shows you the cpu loads.

Time is almost out for Windows XP and i would probably stop posting XP related content in the future due its support about to be taken from Microsoft. But for the sake of completeness I’ll be adding the command on how to display your uptime in windows xp. FYI, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP after April 8, 2014, if you are still using that old oval start button, i suggest you start exploring other stuff you may be able to migrate to.

Unlike Windows XP, Windows 7 specifically does not have its own uptime command so you will need to get it by either downloading an application or by scanning through its net statistics. To view your windows uptime enter the comands in the console Windows:

Console that is

START -> RUN (if there is no run as its disabled by default, try Win Key (Windows Logo) + r on keyboard

Windows 7

Enter the following commands into the console:

net statistics server

or

net statistics workstation

or

net stats srv

Well, that’s the uptime. Just subtract the date today from the Statistics since date on your screen. You will like it especially if you have some knack into some mindless calculations.

Windows XP

Enter the following command into the console:

systeminfo

Then browse to the list until you find the Up time field, alternatively you may insert the command Find “up time” to filter out the other info and display just the uptime values:

systeminfo | find "up time"

Linux, Unix, Mac

For the sake of completeness, i am going to include these commands here too. To view the uptime just type the command

uptime

For the older Windows versions

There is no command I know for the older Windows machines but you can download a program that estimates its uptime and its called uptime.exe, what else. You can try its alpha version, i wonder, why it’s still in alpha as they no longer support those versions.

Download windows uptime program here or use the URL: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232243

The uptime that we are talking here is different from the uptime you usually see when subscribing for a hosting service. Its a measure of how they guarantee the server will be online uptime percent of the time in a year. So for example is a hosting provider might claim a 99.9% uptime, we could calculate the number of hours they maybe down in a year, usually spent for maintenance and hardware upgrades. as of the moment I don’t see any host with the guarantee of 100% uptime yet.

Let’s see, if they claim a 99.9% uptime that leaves

100% – 99.9% = .1% downtime throughout the year so
365 x .1% = .365 hours of downtime,
.365 x 24 = 8.76 hours, that’s roughly 8 hours and 45 minutes

If your host claims 99.9% downtime and they were down for a day, then you have the right to complain, and be irate to them. hehe

I have seen someone posting a link to the new browser game from mozilla using HTML5. Its a short game that can be finished in a couple of minutes. The game style is patterned MMORPG, with other online players inside the browser. You can interact to each of the online players or even talk to them. The browser game link is at Browser Quest game. The game is actually similar to the Diablo 3 beta where the ending gets to defeat King Leoric or the Skeleton King. Nah, purely coincidental…

There are 2 more achievements in the game which are hidden or with no clues on how to get them. If you are looking on how to solve the last two hidden achievements in the game, here’s how. These last two achievements are called “For Science” and “Rickroll’d”. They are actually very easy to get.

Here is the screen shoot of the last two the quests unlocked.

For Science Mozilla Browser Quest Hidden Achievement

There is a place down the town to the right where you can see portals. Just get into the portal and wait for the cake to come out and grab it. See the images on how to do it on your own.

Rickroll’d Mozilla Browser Quest Hidden Achievement

The other hidden achievement is located just above town in the forest where are are ogres guarding the cave. Its a bit tricky and confusing so remembering which door you entered is important. You could test each door until you find the place where there is Rick singing. Just click on him and get the achievement.

Tip: There is a trick in getting into Rick easily. When you get into the confusing doors, always select the leftmost door, May it be located on top or at the bottom and even if you came from that door.

Just in case you were wondering who Rick is, we’ll here is the source of the real Rick

Google Play is an online storage of MP3s that allows you to listen to your library almost anywhere. It allows seamless sync with your android device or iphone device just like iTunes. Thus freeing up valuable space for other stuffs on your mobile device. Sadly Google play is only available in the US.

If you have tried uploading MP3 albums from your PC to your Google play account, often times you would notice that some albums are split. Basically, some of the tracks are grouped into one album and the other tracks into another with the same album cover. It will then show two albums with the split tracks inside. This usually happens when there are inconsistencies in the tacks ID3 tags, specifically the Album Artist field. To solve this, you could go on and edit each track to remove or to add the Album artist making consistent throughout the album. You may find that you could edit multiple tracks at once by selecting them using SHIFT CLICK combination. Then clicking the triangle at the end of the cell in the song title field selecting “edit info for selected songs”.

Another option would be is to just make sure you are uploading the correct ID3 tags. The older versions of the Microsoft Media player allows you to edit them but I can no longer find this option with the newer versions. What I usually do is download a 3rd party tool to edit the ID3 tags. I found that Media Monkey is the best application for editing ID3 tags.

While at it you may want to try out Music Plus for Google Music an extension that lets you scrobble song to your Last.fm account. Use the Google Music Manager to upload and download you MP3s including the ones you bought at the android store. The only problem I found using the application is that sometimes tracks will fail to upload and if you are uploading hundreds of files it will be hard to track and the application does not provide any option to retry the failed upload.

Drawing filled polygons in photoshop is fairly easy, however, an outlined circle without the fill seem to be a bit difficult to create. You probably figured it out yourself but for those who haven’t i have outlined the steps below.

There are many ways to create the circle and i am only providing two its up to you to choose which method you prefer later. In my own personal opinion, i find method 2 to be the easiest and more accurate.

Method 1: using the polygon tool (U)

Add a new layer

Using the polygon tool (press U)

Draw a polygon (circle) in to the canvass

To make a circle or square hold down the shift key while drawing the object

At the layers palette (press F7, if there’s no layers palette)

Select the layer with your polygon on

Drag the Fill Slider bar from 100% to 0%

Right Click on the polygon layer, and choose Blending Options at the context menu

At the Styles sidebar, select and place a check at the Stroke check box

Adjust the Size of the stroke in pixels

Change the color and the position

Then click OK

You may resize the polygon by using the Free Transform (Command-T) key

Method 2: Using the Marquee Tool (m)

Add a new layer

Using the Marquee tool (press M)

Draw a polygon (circle, square, etc) into the canvass

To make a circle or square hold down the shift key while drawing the object

At the Edit menu, choose Stroke

Set the Width in pixel,

Set the color and location

Then click OK

You may resize the polygon by using the Free Transform (Command-T) key

Method 2 is way simpler and the polygon is more concise compare to method 1 either way its up to you to decide.

Diablo 3 has just opened its doors, yes, players who opted for beta testing can now play Diablo 3 Beta, that is if you were invited. The beta release includes 5 classes namely the witch doctor, barbarian, wizard, monk, and demon hunter. The beta will let you play up until King Leoric also known as “Skeleton King”. You will also be roaming around a familiar place from the old Diablo place called “New Tristram”. I’m still playing the game so i can’t give out much comment but i might record some video about it here.

The greatest change to the game would probably be the auction house which will allow us to use the in-game gold or real cash via Paypal to purchase and trade game items. If you have used Diablo 2, you probably have gone to forum sites and trade from there which is prone to scams and other forms of cheat. the auction house will be a great addition to the new Diablo series. Runestones by class is also new to D3 give you more control over your skills and abilities including enhanced damage, better accuracy, AOE or other special effects. The henchman from D2 were replaced with even better followers in which you can now outfit them with armor and have skills that can be upgraded too. Another new feature is the achivements, which we already saw in Starcraft 2, and i find it very cool just to be able to track how we progress throughtout the game.
