If you only do one thing on this list, make it a cruise with Argosy.

Argosy Cruises has been a fixture on Seattle’s waters for more than 75 years. Family owned, locally rooted, and widely regarded as the city’s premier sightseeing experience, their cruises pairs seasoned captains and local guides with some of the most breathtaking views in the Pacific Northwest. Three cruises in particular stand out for date night:

Seattle Sunset Cruise. A 90-minute scenic journey across Elliott Bay, perfectly timed for golden hour. As the skyline takes on a warm glow and the Olympic Mountains rise in the distance, the open-air deck becomes the ideal vantage point for an unforgettable evening on the water.

Locks Cruise. Perfect for a daytime date, this two-hour, one-way cruise that travels through the historic Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, connecting Puget Sound and Lake Union. Along the route, you’ll pass floating homes, seaplanes, and waterfront neighborhoods rarely seen from land. Passing through the locks themselves is a uniquely Seattle experience that captures the city’s maritime heritage.

Harbor Cruise. The original. A one-hour guided tour of Elliott Bay featuring panoramic views of the skyline, Olympic Sculpture Park, and an up-close look at Seattle’s working waterfront. A wonderful introduction to the city by water, perfect for a relaxed afternoon together.

Seattle is famous for its dramatic sunsets. With Puget Sound to the west, the Olympic Mountains silhouetted on the horizon, and the city skyline lit up in pink and gold, the Emerald City delivers some of the most photogenic evenings on the West Coast. But because Seattle sits at a high latitude (about 47.6 degrees north), sunset times shift dramatically across the year. A summer sunset can stretch past 9 p.m., while winter evenings end before 4:30 p.m.

Whether you’re planning a date night, a photo walk along Alki Beach, or a rooftop dinner downtown, knowing when the sun dips below the horizon is the first step to catching that perfect golden hour. Below is a month-by-month guide to average Seattle sunset times so you can plan ahead.

Note: Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Times are approximate and can vary by a few minutes year to year.

When to Catch the Best Seattle Sunsets

Not every sunset is created equal. Here are the seasonal sweet spots worth marking on your calendar.

Summer (June through August) delivers the longest evenings of the year. Around the summer solstice in late June, the sun sets after 9 p.m., giving you a leisurely evening to enjoy waterfront views. Skies are typically clearer this time of year, and warm temperatures make outdoor viewing comfortable late into the night.

Early fall (September and October) is arguably the best time for dramatic skies. Cool evening air, crisp visibility, and a higher chance of cloud structures mean richer pinks, purples, and oranges. Sunset times also fall back into a more dinner-friendly window.

Winter (November through February) brings short days, but they are not without reward. Low sun angles paint the Olympic Mountains in alpenglow, and the contrast against snow-capped peaks can be stunning. Bundle up and head to a west-facing viewpoint.

Spring (March through May) offers a transition period with rapidly lengthening days. By the end of May, you can enjoy a full dinner before sunset, and the freshly green hillsides make for vibrant foreground scenery.

Best Seattle Sunset Viewing Spots

A great sunset deserves a great vantage point. Some local favorites include Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill for the classic skyline shot, Alki Beach in West Seattle for unobstructed water views, Gas Works Park for a north-facing perspective across Lake Union, and the Seattle Great Wheel for an elevated waterfront experience.

Experience Sunset on the Water

The best way to experience a Seattle sunset is on the water. From the middle of Elliott Bay, you get unobstructed 360-degree views of the city skyline, the Space Needle, the Olympic Mountains, and the sky reflecting off Puget Sound. There’s no traffic, no crowds blocking your view, and no buildings in the way, just open horizon and golden light.

For a memorable evening, consider booking a Seattle Sunset Cruise with Argosy Cruises. It’s the kind of experience that turns an ordinary evening into a story you’ll be telling for years.

Explore the Edmonds Holiday Market

One of the most popular holiday events in Edmonds is the Holiday Market, where you can explore festive stalls, seasonal foods, and community activities. Here is why it is a great place to enjoy local traditions, find special gifts, and try holiday treats:

Local Vendors and Seasonal Goods

The Edmonds Holiday Market brings together many local vendors who share their best seasonal goods. You can walk through the stalls and find handmade crafts and unique gifts made by local artisans. Shopping here not only helps you find thoughtful presents but also supports small businesses in the community.

Along with crafts and decor, the market also offers seasonal food and locally made products. You can pick up seasonal treats and drinks that highlight the flavors of the holidays. Exploring these vendors allows you to enjoy the holiday spirit in a simple, local way.

Festive Foods and Treats

The Edmonds Holiday Market is not only about gifts, it is also about food. You can warm yourself up with many tasty holiday snacks. The flavor of baked items fills the air, and you will find cookies, pastries, and fresh breads to enjoy right away or take home.

Additionally, street food vendors make the market even more fun with seasonal favorites. Trying these foods adds extra joy to your visit, especially when you are exploring it with your friends and family.

Community Vibe

Other than shopping and food, the Edmonds Holiday Market is also known for its community vibe. Local musicians often play live music and fill the streets with cheerful songs that make the event lively. Families will also find fun activities for kids, so everyone can enjoy the holiday season together.

Since the market takes place in downtown Edmonds, you can also explore nearby shops, galleries, and cafes during your visit. It is not just a place to shop, it is a tradition that brings people together to celebrate the season.

Attend the Edmonds Tree Lighting Ceremony

Another popular highlight of the holiday season in Edmonds is the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The event highlights the strong community spirit of Edmonds while offering plenty of music, entertainment, and activities for all ages.

Annual Tradition

The Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place at Centennial Plaza in downtown Edmonds. Each year, the plaza turns into the center of holiday fun, decorated with lights and seasonal displays. The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce hosts the event, and it has become a favorite tradition that both locals and visitors look forward to every year.

This tradition is all about bringing people together in a welcoming space. The event gives you a chance to enjoy time with others and experience the true holiday spirit of Edmonds.

Music and Entertainment

The Tree Lighting Ceremony also includes live entertainment that sets the mood for the evening. Local choirs, groups, and community bands perform holiday songs and carols for everyone to enjoy. Along with choirs and carolers, live bands often play familiar holiday tunes that invite the crowd to sing along and take part in the celebration.

The music keeps the energy high and adds to the excitement leading up to the big tree lighting. With so much entertainment, the ceremony becomes a full community celebration where everyone feels included and part of the holiday fun.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

Apart from music and lights, the Tree Lighting Ceremony is also known for its family-friendly activities. Santa often makes an appearance, giving kids the chance to take photos and share their holiday wishes. Volunteers and vendors usually serve seasonal treats to increase the cozy holiday mood.

These family activities make the Tree Lighting Ceremony a special outing for all ages. You can sip warm drinks, walk along the decorated streets, and take part in local holiday traditions. The mix of entertainment, food, and festive activities makes it one of the most enjoyable events in Edmonds.

Enjoy Waterfront Festivities and Lights

After visiting the market and the tree lighting ceremony, you can keep the holiday spirit alive at the waterfront. Here is what you can do there:

Edmonds Marina Holiday Lights

The Port of Edmonds Marina is one of the main attractions for waterfront activities. During the season, the marina shines with festive lights, and many boats are decorated to create a sparkling view. The setting feels lively yet calm, giving you the chance to enjoy the lights reflecting on the water.

As you visit, take your time strolling along the marina to see all the details. The glowing lights on the water and the decorated boats make this display unique compared to other holiday spots in Edmonds.

Best Spots for Evening Walks

One of the best ways to enjoy the waterfront lights is by taking an evening walk. The marina paths give you clear views of the decorated boats and nearby buildings. As you walk, you can see the lights from different angles and take in the full holiday scene.

Another good place for a walk is the Edmonds fishing pier, which gives wide views of the marina. From here, the decorated boats and holiday reflections are easy to see. The pier is a great spot if you want a peaceful stroll and a close look at the city lights.

Perfect Photo Backdrops

Other than walking, the marina is also an excellent place for holiday photos. The lights on the boats and nearby buildings make a perfect backdrop for holiday photos. You can also check out the viewpoints near the marina office and along the shoreline paths.

From these spots, you get a clear view of the lights shining on the water, which makes photos extra special. Make sure to visit in the evening, when the lights are brightest, to capture your memorable holiday moments.

Set Sail on the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship Festival

Apart from activities on land, Edmonds also gives you the chance to join a special Northwest holiday tradition on the water. The Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship Festival has been a part of the season for over 75 years, and now there is a departure point right in Edmonds.

New Edmonds Departure

With the new Edmonds departure, you can join the Christmas Ship Festival without driving to Seattle. Now, you can board right from the Edmonds waterfront and be part of this holiday event. This makes the festival easier to reach and helps you feel connected to one of the region’s favorite traditions.

From Edmonds, you still get the full Christmas Ship experience, where you will enjoy the same music, lights, and festive activities as any other departure. For visitors exploring the area for the day, this departure option is an easy way to connect waterfront activities and continue the celebration out on the water.

Onboard Experience

When you step on board the Spirit of Seattle, you are welcomed by a warm holiday setting. The ship is covered in hundreds of white lights, and inside it feels cozy and ready for you to enjoy the ride. During the hour-and-a-half cruise, you can listen to live choirs singing holiday songs and hear festive stories.

As you enjoy the activities on board, you will also get to take in the views of Puget Sound in winter. This mix of music, lights, and scenery makes the cruise a complete holiday experience that you can enjoy from start to finish.

Magical Sound Experience

One of the best parts of the Christmas Ship Festival is how the music is shared with everyone. The choirs sing for people on the ship and for those on the shore. This makes the event enjoyable for both passengers and the community.

If you are on the ship, you can listen to the choir up close and be part of the celebration. At the same time, people on land can also enjoy the songs as the ship sails by. This way, the festival connects both groups and creates one holiday memory that everyone can share.

Discover Holiday Arts & Performances

To wrap up your list of holiday activities in Edmonds, you should also check out the city’s arts and culture. During the season, local theaters, galleries, and music groups put on special events that add even more fun to the celebrations.

Seattle is a city full of amazing views, culture, and a lot of fun things to do. This vibrant city offers many adventures and activities where you can see the skyline from the top of the Space Needle, take a cruise ride on Elliott Bay, or enjoy fresh seafood at Pike Place Market. If you are a traveler who likes to explore new adventures or wants to experience some authentic local culture, there are many things to do in Seattle.

In this guide, we are going to share some of the top Seattle activities and places to visit, and explore so you can enjoy the best of what the city has to offer.

Embrace Iconic Views from Above

Seattle has some amazing views, and one of the best ways to enjoy them is by looking at the city from above. To enjoy the iconic views from above, the city has two great places, the Space Needle and the Sky View Observatory.

Space Needle Visit

The Space Needle is one of Seattle’s most famous buildings and is a must-see for anyone who is planning to visit the city. This structure was built in 1962 and is 605 feet tall. From the top of the Space Needle, you can see breathtaking views of Seattle, Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and nearby mountains.

The observation deck from which you can enjoy these stunning views has big glass walls and an open-air area. Also, one of the coolest parts about the Space Needle is The Loupe, which is a glass floor that slowly turns while you stand on it. This glass allows you to see straight down to the ground.

Apart from these views, there are also digital screens and exhibits that tell you interesting facts about Seattle’s history. If you want a smooth experience, try to visit it in the morning or on a weekday, when the weather is clearer and it is less crowded.

Sky View Observatory

Another iconic location from which you can have amazing views of Seattle is the Sky View Observatory. It is located on the 73rd floor of the Columbia Center and is the highest public viewpoint in the Pacific Northwest. It is nearly 900 feet tall and gives you amazing 360-degree views of Seattle and more.

From here, you can see the Space Needle, downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, Mount Rainier, and the Olympic Mountains, on a clear day. It is a calm and spacious place, so you can enjoy the views without the crowds. There is also a cafe and bar where you can grab a coffee, snack, or glass of wine while taking it all in.

Interestingly, at the Sky View Observatory, you can also organize private events with your friends and family. The Sky View is a quieter alternative and offers wider views, great if you want to relax and take your time enjoying the scenery.

Immerse Yourself in Waterfront Wonders

For your waterfront adventures, there are plenty of options. However, the two must-do experiences in Seattle are the Argosy Locks Cruise and the Seattle Great Wheel. You can enjoy a boat ride through the city’s canals or take in stunning views from high above the bay.

Argosy Cruises

A ride with Argosy Cruises is a fun way to see Seattle from the water. The Locks Cruise is a 2-hour trip that takes you through the city’s busy waterways. One of the highlights of the Locks Cruise is that you get to experience the Ballard Locks, where you will see boats lifting up or down between the fresh water and the salt water.

You will also get amazing views of the Seattle skyline, Space Needle, and the Olympic Sculpture Park. On the cruise deck, snacks and drinks are also available for refreshment. The cruise is great for both families and elderly visitors and is a fun and relaxing way to explore Seattle.

Seattle Great Wheel

The Seattle Great Wheel is a big Ferris wheel located at Pier 57. The wheel is 175 feet tall and allows visitors to experience amazing views of Elliott Bay, the Seattle Aquarium, T-Mobile Park, and even Mt. Rainier when the sky is clear. The ride is smooth and operates all year long.

Each gondola can fit up to eight adults, and the ride lasts about 10 to 20 minutes. Interestingly, more than 300 people can ride the Great Wheel at the same time. It is a fun and easy ride for everyone, even kids or the elderly, and is a great way to enjoy the view from above.

Dive into Vibrant Cultural Experiences

Apart from the city’s beautiful views and scenery, Seattle is also famous for its culture and popular places like Pike Place Market and the Museum of Pop Culture. Here’s what you can look forward to when you visit these two must-see spots.

Pike Place Market

A visit to Seattle is not complete without going to Pike Place Market. This famous market has been a big part of the city since 1907. Today, it’s one of the busiest and most exciting public markets in the US. You will find hundreds of sellers offering fresh fruits and vegetables, handmade jewelry, old comic books, and cheeses made by locals.

You can also try local food like Beecher’s mac and cheese, tasty pastries from Piroshky Piroshky, and fresh fruit samples. There are also nice spots to sit and enjoy a drink, like beer from Old Stove Brewing or ginger beer from Rachel’s. At night, the market becomes more lively with bars and late-night food places around Post Alley and MarketFront.

Museum of Pop Culture

The Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) is a great place to visit if you enjoy music, movies, video games, or science fiction. It was started by Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft. The museum holds over 85,000 artifacts from all areas of pop culture. The building has a cool and unique design.

You can see famous guitars from Jimi Hendrix and props from movies like Blade Runner and The Lord of the Rings. You can also play music in the Sound Lab and explore fun exhibits. The museum also has hands-on activities, workshops, and live events, so it is a great place for people who enjoy pop culture.

Explore Natural Beauty and Outdoor Adventures

For nature lovers and outdoor fans, Seattle also has many places to explore outside the streets. For example, two of the best spots for outdoor adventures are Discovery Park and Chihuly Garden and Glass.

Discovery Park

Discovery Park is the biggest green space in Seattle and is a great place to relax without leaving the city. It is located in the Magnolia neighborhood and spans across 534 acres. The park has forest trails, open meadows, and beautiful views of Puget Sound. You can go for an easy walk or take a longer hike with small hills. On clear days, you can also see Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains.

Also, there are many popular spots in the park, such as the West Point Lighthouse. There are multiple walking trails, including the 4.4-mile loop that takes you around the park and to the lighthouse. Along the way, you might also see wildlife, beaches, and peaceful wooded areas, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers.

Chihuly Garden and Glass

Chihuly Garden and Glass is located in the Seattle Center, close to the Space Needle. It shows the beautiful glass art of Dale Chihuly, a famous artist known for his innovative and detailed designs. The place has both indoor and outdoor areas, and the main feature is the Glasshouse, a long glass building with a 100-foot-long hanging sculpture.

The sculpture looks different as the natural light changes during the day. The museum is easy to walk through.
Coffee Culture

Seattle is often called the coffee capital of the US, and that’s for good reason because this is the city where iconic franchise Starbucks first started. There are several places, such as C & P Coffee, Zeitgeist, that give you a true coffee experience.

Local Dining Hotspots

Apart from its coffee culture, Seattle also offers a wide variety of delicious food. The city is known for fresh seafood like Dungeness crab, oysters, and salmon, thanks to its location near the ocean. You can enjoy a relaxed meal by the water or try something new at smaller restaurants around town.

For a rooftop experience to remember, make reservations for a pre-dinner drink at Firn in the Populus Hotel. Sitting above Pioneer Square, this new hot spot has exquisite cocktails and a great vibe.

At Crawfish House in White Center, you can enjoy Viet-Cajun seafood. Seattle also has many creative restaurants, like MariPili Tapas Bar serves Spanish dishes made with local ingredients, and Archipelago offers Filipino-American food. So, no matter what kind of food you enjoy, Seattle has something for every taste and budget.

Seafair Weekend annually transforms Seattle’s Genesee Park and Lake Washington into a spectacular stage for the exhilarating Boeing Seafair Airshow featuring the Blue Angels. This event, deeply entrenched in the heart of the Puget Sound community, draws spectators from across the region, who gather to witness the precision and skill of the famed naval aviators. The Blue Angels, known for their tight formations and daring aerobatics, perform over the waters of Lake Washington, offering a breathtaking display of aerial prowess.

Attending this event provides a unique opportunity to see the Blue Angels execute maneuvers such as the Vertical Break, the Diamond Dirty Loop, and the Sneak Pass, against the backdrop of Seattle’s picturesque landscape. The full schedule of the airshow is meticulously planned, with visibility and execution heavily dependent on weather conditions. This adds an element of suspense and excitement, as attendees eagerly anticipate clear skies for the best possible viewing experience.

Preparation for spectators includes checking the latest schedule updates and ensuring tickets and viewing spots are secured well in advance. The event is not just an airshow but a celebration of community, aviation excellence, and national pride, encapsulated in the roar of jet engines and the gasps of amazed crowds.

Historical Background

The Blue Angels, officially formed in 1946, have become a celebrated fixture at Seattle’s Seafair since their first performance at the festival in 1972. Originating as the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, their mission was to boost Navy morale, demonstrate naval air power, and maintain public interest in naval aviation. Their precision flying and awe-inspiring aerobatics quickly captivated the public, enhancing their reputation nationally.

Seafair, which began in 1950, was conceived as a festival to celebrate Seattle’s marine and boating heritage. By integrating the Blue Angels into their program, Seafair bridged Seattle’s rich naval history with spectacular contemporary entertainment. This partnership magnified the event’s draw, transforming it into a pivotal summer attraction for both locals and tourists. The annual performances of the Blue Angels became a symbol of precision and discipline, reflecting the spirit and expertise of the U.S. Navy.

Their appearance every summer highlights the peak of the Seafair festival, bringing together communities with displays of aerial mastery that echo the dynamism and innovation of Seattle itself. Each show not only reinforces the historical ties between the naval forces and the local community but also underscores the enduring allure and excitement of naval aviation in modern times.

For those looking to stay on land, you’ll want to consider securing a spot near Genesee Park or along the shores of Lake Washington, where the aerial maneuvers are most visible. These locations offer essential views that are important for appreciating the precision and skill of the pilots.

Genesee Park, in particular, is a popular choice because it provides a wide expanse of open sky above Lake Washington, allowing for panoramic views of the high-speed jets as they perform their intricate formations and stunts.

Another excellent spot is the waterfront areas along Lake Washington Boulevard. Here, spectators can enjoy a slightly elevated vantage point, which can offer a different perspective on the aerial performance. The boulevard stretches along the eastern shore of the lake, giving visitors numerous options for setting up their viewing area.

For those looking for a more unique experience, the docks and public piers around the lake also provide a frontline view of the action. These spots are especially good for photography enthusiasts aiming to capture the Blue Angels in their dramatic flybys and complex choreography against the backdrop of the Seattle skyline.

Viewing Experience

Experiencing the Blue Angels at Seafair transcends typical spectatorship, transforming into a visceral celebration of aerial precision and speed. The sensation of watching these high-performance jets execute breathtaking maneuvers above Lake Washington is electrifying. The roar of the engines reverberates through the body, creating a palpable excitement among the crowd. Each loop, roll, and dive demonstrates not just the skill of the pilots but also the cutting-edge capabilities of aviation technology.

Seafair Weekend presents a unique opportunity to witness these thrilling performances. Crowds gather around Genesee Park and along the shores of Lake Washington, their anticipation building until the sky above bursts into motion with the jets’ synchronized choreography. The experience is not merely about watching; it’s about feeling part of something larger—a shared moment of awe and national pride.

The Blue Angels’ performance schedule is contingent on weather, which adds an element of unpredictability to the event. Spectators are advised to check the full Boeing Seafair Airshow schedule to enhance their viewing experience, ensuring they don’t miss any part of this spectacular aerial display.

Accessibility and Amenities

While the Blue Angels’ shows are a visual spectacle, guaranteeing easy access and available amenities also greatly enhances the spectator experience at Seafair 2025. For those planning to attend, Seafair organizers have made significant efforts to cater to a variety of needs, ensuring that all attendees, including those with disabilities, have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Accessible viewing areas are available, offering unobstructed views of the thrilling aerial maneuvers. These areas are situated strategically around Genesee Park and along the shores of Lake Washington, providing excellent vantage points for all.

Additionally, the Seafair Weekend event at Genesee Park has a plethora of amenities to improve visitor comfort. Numerous food vendors offer a wide range of culinary choices, from local delights to international cuisines, catering to diverse palates and dietary needs. Ample restroom facilities are strategically placed throughout the venue, and there are several first aid stations, ensuring quick medical attention if needed.

For families, designated quiet zones and diaper-changing facilities are accessible, making the event welcoming for attendees with young children.

Transportation to and from the event is streamlined through increased public transit services and designated parking areas close to the main attractions. This thoughtful organization ensures that your focus remains on the skies, enjoying the spectacular show hassle-free.

Seafair Traditions and Culture

Seafair, a cornerstone of Seattle’s cultural fabric, blends a rich tapestry of traditions ranging from boat races to parades that encapsulate the city’s maritime and aviation heritage. Each summer, this festival transforms the city into a vibrant tableau of community spirit and celebration. Central to its festivities is the hydroplane races on Lake Washington, a nod to Seattle’s deep connections with water-based activities. The thunderous roars of the engines and the splash of speeding boats provide a pulse-pounding spectacle that attracts thousands of spectators.

Moreover, the event is synonymous with the Blue Angels’ awe-inspiring air shows. The precision flight demonstrations by the U.S. Navy pilots are not just displays of aerial acrobatics but also a tribute to the advancements in aviation technology and military excellence. This high-flying act is eagerly anticipated, with people flocking to secure the best viewing spots around the lake.

Seafair’s cultural imprint extends beyond the water and skies. The Torchlight Parade, featuring brightly lit floats and energetic dance troupes, travels through downtown Seattle, offering a night of enchantment. These events, alongside numerous community picnics and concerts, weave together the diverse threads of Seattle’s social and cultural life, making Seafair a cherished tradition that embodies the community’s identity and pride.

Health and Safety

Prioritizing the safety and well-being of all attendees is paramount during the exhilarating Seafair festivities. As thousands gather to witness the stunning aerial maneuvers of the Blue Angels, it’s essential to prioritize health and safety measures.

First, spectators should come prepared with proper sun protection, including sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, as the event involves prolonged exposure to the sun. Additionally, staying hydrated is crucial, and visitors are encouraged to bring sufficient water supplies to combat the heat.

Noise protection is another significant consideration. The Blue Angels’ performances involve high decibel levels, which can pose a risk to hearing. Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones are recommended, especially for children and those with sensitive hearing.

Given the large crowds, it is also important for attendees to be aware of their surroundings and keep an eye on their personal belongings to prevent theft or loss.

Furthermore, event organizers provide clearly marked medical stations throughout the venue for any health-related emergencies. These stations are staffed with professional medical personnel ready to assist with any issues that may arise. Attendees should familiarize themselves with the locations of these stations upon arrival to ensure they can access help quickly if needed.

On an Argosy boat, you can experience the boat elevator firsthand when you cruise from the sea water of Puget Sound, up 20 to 22 feet, and into the freshwater of lakes Washington and Union – or vice versa! The highlight of this tour is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks named after an Army engineer of the project finished in 1917. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers still runs the locking system today, over 100 years later. It is locally known as the Ballard Locks named after the Seattle neighborhood to the north. These locks are the busiest in the United States and one of the top 3 attractions in Seattle, next to the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. Visitors can see this in action and walk across the locks, watching ships pass and salmon go up the fish ladder. Rising through the historical locks is an incredible experience you won’t forget!

Film & T.V.

Although most productions commonly take place in Hollywood, these have set the stage for how people who haven’t visited view Seattle. For film and T.V. lovers, there are many exciting movie and T.V. landmarks along this cruise route!

Sleepless in Seattle

Unsurprisingly, Sleepless in Seattle is the film that most people identify with the city. While there are many popular filming destinations, on this cruise, you can see Sam Baldwin’s iconic floating home from the water. Although movie magic means the inside isn’t the same, someone still bought it in 2014 for over $2 million. Reminisce on this romantic comedy by seeing it up close on our tour!

10 Things I Hate About You

Another popular film set in Seattle is 10 Things I Hate About You and fans can find sights from the movie all over the city. Your guide will point out Gas Works Park, a popular place for residents to hang out and enjoy the view of Lake Union. You may recognize the rusty towers from this movie, where Patrick and Kat have a paintball fight. While you can’t do this in the historic park in real life, you can cruise by and see the former industrial plant and kites flying high over the hill. This facility was created as a coal gasification plant to convert coal into gas for lighting; however, lightbulbs were beginning to take off and by 1973, it was officially a public park. Great to enjoy from land or water!

Grey’s Anatomy

Up on the hillside of the Queen Anne neighborhood, medical drama fans might recognize the iconic house Merdith Grey (and many of her friends) lived in on the show Grey’s Anatomy. Remember, real people live here so if you decide to make a trip up to this beautiful house, make sure to be respectful of the owners.

Fraiser

TV show Fraiser was set in Seattle, but like most productions, was primarily filmed on sound stages in LA. However, the 100th episode of the sitcom was filmed in downtown Seattle where characters Niles and Fraiser are going through the city on a mission. Some of their stops include the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, which you can see from both the Locks and Harbor cruises.

iCarly

For all the Gen-Zers, you may remember the popular kids T.V. show set in Seattle, iCarly. While there is occasionally imagery of the Space Needle, filming took place in Los Angeles at Nickelodeon on Sunset Studios. Still, this funny show makes references to popular Seattle destinations like going to “Skybucks Coffee Bar” a play on the iconic Seattle-based coffee chain, Starbucks.

Floating Homes and Houseboats

Aside from the most recognizable houseboat on the water from the film Sleepless in Seattle, there are hundreds of others along the waters of Lake Union. They have been around Seattle since the 1920s and many are constructed on the original logs placed a century ago. Homeowners are not allowed to move or replace this waterlogged timber acting as a buoy because it has become an integral part of the ecosystem, signaling to spawning salmon that they are headed in the right direction. Another houseboat you will pass while cruising under the Fremont bridge is Aurora, the largest on Lake Union at 4,800 square feet. Keep your eye out for these impressive floating homes and learn more about their history with our guides!

Seattle Sky & Coastline

Not only do you get to see the iconic waterfront on the Harbor cruise, but your Locks cruise also sails the coastline to see some of Seattle’s most famous spots. Since this is a 2-hour, one-way trip, you can see much more of Seattle and its neighborhoods all from different angles. Visitors can enjoy skyline views from the open top deck of an Argosy boat in Elliott Bay.

Space Needle

The Space Needle is Seattle’s most popular attraction and makes its skyline easily recognizable. It began with a doodle from the chief organizer of the 1962 World’s Fair which was held in Seattle. This unique structure was built and opened on the first day of the World’s Fair just three years later in 1962. During the expo, the tower hosted an estimated 2.65 million visitors from around the world including celebrities like John Wayne, Prince Philip of Great Britian, Walt Disney and many others. It stands at 605 feet tall, so if you put the Space Needle in Elliot Bay, only 5 feet would remain uncovered in the naturally deep harbor.

If you want to brave the heights and see a 360° view of the city, check out Seattle’s CityPASS to save up to 49% on admission to Seattle’s top 5 attractions, including the Space Needle and an Argosy Cruise Harbor Tour.

The Great Wheel

A 175-foot-tall Ferris wheel dubbed the “Seattle Great Wheel” added an extra attraction to the city in summer of 2012. Located on Pier 57, this is one of the first sights you see when you are leaving the Argosy docks, or the last as you head in from your Locks Cruise departing from Lake Union. Because of the massive ride, the end of the pier had to be torn down and rebuilt using galvanized steel pilings, three feet in diameter. Now, there are 42 climate-controlled gondolas so guests can enjoy all year even with Seattle’s rainy weather. Standing boldly on the water, it makes for a beautiful picture of the Seattle skyline as you cruise by.

The Edgewater Hotel

Close to the Great Wheel, cruise past the iconic Edgewater Hotel and learn the fun stories and history of this waterfront stay. Like the Space Needle, the Edgewater was built for the World’s Fair hosted in Seattle. Unfortunately for the developers, they finished shortly after the fair concluded. To bring new attention to this huge “floating” hotel, they advertised the ability to fish from your window.

The Beatles visited in 1964 during the height of their fame, bringing hordes of fans and attention to the hotel. They participated in the popular activity resulting in an iconic picture of the band hanging fishing poles out of their window into Elliot Bay. Other notable guests include Led Zeplin, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, and many more. After furniture was thrown into the bay and fish left swimming in bathtubs, the hotel had to put an end to finishing from the windows. An interesting part of Seattle history to see firsthand!

What do you do if it’s Independence Day but your kids aren’t quite independent? Luckily, there are lots of fun activities to do with kids around the Seattle area to celebrate the holiday. Enjoy the fireworks show from the best spots, dress up in red white and blue for a local parade, or learn about the American flag. If you are looking for unique ideas to keep your kids entertained on America’s birthday, look no further. No matter how you celebrate, we wish you and your family a happy holiday!

Here is a list of the best things to do this weekend to celebrate with the whole family.

Hundreds of people waving American flags, kids with decorated bicycles, and small babies in strollers adorned with ribbons and pinwheels make the short walk together at 10am.

There are many fun activities to keep them entertained once the parade is over like making crafts, competing in a sack race, and even getting to touch a real fire truck! Activities are sponsored by local businesses and supported by volunteers; kids are free! There is a variety of food and desert options available for purchase from local food trucks in the area. This is a great way to spend your Fourth of July morning with the whole family surrounded by excitement!

Top Reasons Oregon Visitors Love the Locks Cruise

As travelers, one should always seek out new experiences, and for those who are based in Oregon, what could be better than Seattle’s Locks Cruise to enjoy a unique perspective of the Pacific Northwest? This popular tour from Argosy Cruises offers a relaxing and informative way to see the city’s historic waterways, take in scenic views, and pass through the famous Ballard Locks.

In this article, we’ll explore why Oregon visitors should consider the Locks Cruise and what makes this short journey so special.

A PNW Favorite Worth Crossing State Lines

The Seattle Locks Cruise has long been a favorite day-trip activity for tourists and visitors from Oregon who are looking to experience something different. This tour combines the best of city sightseeing with plenty of natural beauty. For many Oregon travelers, it can be a fun and relaxing way to explore their neighboring city without planning a big trip.

Here’s what you can expect from the cruise:

City Views and Natural Beauty in One Cruise: The Seattle Locks Cruise has long been a favorite for Oregon travelers looking to explore the city with scenic charm. You will enjoy views of the Seattle skyline, spot the iconic Space Needle, and, on clear days, even get to see Mt. Rainier.

The Allure of the Seattle Waterfront: Seattle’s waterfront is where you can see the city life while enjoying the fresh air of Puget Sound. From the cruise, you will see floating homes and active fishing boats, all from a peaceful point.

Passing Through the Historic Ballard Locks: One of the major highlights of this cruise is going through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as the Ballard Locks. It is a fascinating process that raises or lowers boats to move between freshwater and saltwater.

Live Narration and Local Insights: Throughout the cruise, a guide shares live commentary that is filled with local stories and historical facts. It makes the trip more engaging and helps visitors understand the significance of what they are seeing along the way.

Unforgettable Natural and Urban Scenery

One big reason Oregon visitors enjoy the Locks Cruise is that it offers amazing views in a short amount of time. From the boat’s open deck, you can see the Seattle skyline, the Space Needle, and nearby mountains. As the cruise moves through Seattle’s waterways, you will pass through floating homes and beautiful mountain views, all without leaving the city.

It is a great way to enjoy both nature and the city at once. The smooth ride and fresh air make it easy to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the scenery. Another reason people love this cruise is the chance to see marine life and Seattle’s busy waterfront. You might spot harbor seals, bald eagles flying above, or orcas during certain seasons.

The crew often points them out, making it fun for kids and adults. You will also see big cargo ships, fishing boats, and shipyards, which show how important the Puget Sound is for work and play. This mix of animals and activity gives you a better picture of what makes the Seattle area special.

The Engineering Wonder of the Ballard Locks

One of the biggest highlights for Oregon visitors on the Locks Cruise is seeing the Ballard Locks up close. These locks are officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and are a real feat of engineering. They control the water levels between the freshwater lakes and the saltwater Puget Sound, which allows boats to rise or fall as needed. There are two lock chambers, one for small boats and another for larger vessels.

Here’s how these locks work and what you will get to see:

Watch vessels of all sizes: From small to large boats, you will see them move through the lock chambers, raised or lowered by the water levels between the freshwater lakes and the saltwater.

Check out the salmon ladders: You will find these located right next to the locks. These special pathways help salmon migrate between freshwater and the ocean.

During migration season, you can also watch salmon swim upstream through large glass windows. These are not just fun to see, but it is also an important part of the Pacific Northwest’s ecosystem for visitors who are curious to learn how the fish ladders support salmon populations.

Argosy Cruises: The Gold Standard in Guided Experiences

Argosy Cruises has been part of Seattle’s waterfront for over 75 years. It started as a small Water Taxi and has grown into one of the top local cruise companies in the area. Even though it is much bigger now, it’s still a locally-owned, family-run business that focuses on fun, easy, and educational boat tours, like the popular Locks Cruise.

The Locks Cruise is one of their best-known trips. It takes you through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, a special water system that connects Lake Union to Puget Sound. On this ride, you will get to see the historic Ballard Locks, Seattle’s marine life, and skyline views of the city. This tour offers a great mix of scenery and history, making it an ideal choice for Oregon travelers who want to experience Seattle in a new way.

Cultural Appeal for Oregonians

The Locks Cruise is a favorite for Oregon travelers because it fits well with the things people in the Pacific Northwest enjoy. As the boat goes through the Ballard Locks in Seattle, you will see how water levels are managed so boats can safely travel between the freshwater of Lake Union and the saltwater of Puget Sound. It is fun to watch and easy to understand, with tour guides explaining the process along the way.

You will also pass by interesting sights like floating homes, fishing boats, and even large cargo ships. This cruise gives a close-up look at Seattle’s marine life and working waterfront, something you don’t see every day. Many Oregon visitors enjoy how it feels both familiar and new, especially with views of the Seattle skyline and mountains on clear days.

Also, the area around the cruise start and end points is full of great local food, coffee shops, and markets, so it’s easy to make a full day of your trip. If you are coming from Portland or a smaller Oregon town, the cruise is a great choice for a weekend getaway or road trip stop. It\’s a simple, fun, and meaningful way to experience Seattle’s connection to nature and city life.

Practical Reasons to Choose the Locks Cruise

The Locks Cruise is a practical and enjoyable choice for visitors who want to experience Seattle in just a couple of hours. It’s perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers who are looking for a low-effort, high-reward activity. Here\’s why:

Cheers to Another Great Year and Holiday Season

The Annual Christmas Ship Festival concluded on December 23rd bringing holiday cheer to the water for a wondrous month by sending The Spirit of Seattle out for themed sailings, lighting up Lake Union with the 9th Annual Parade of boats, having participating communities host onshore bonfires, and so much more. This festival is not only a Seattle tradition happening because of the Christmas season, but because of the wonderful people and many communities that partake, watch, or ride! Cheers to another amazing year of making lasting memories with friends and family, continuing traditions, or starting new ones – Argosy Cruises is proud to be a part of it!

In addition to bringing Santa onto the water and carols for everyone to hear, the Christmas Ship Festival most importantly gives back. Since 1996, The Seattle Times and Argosy Cruises has had a strong partnership, supporting The Fund For Those In Need, a non-profit organization providing necessary programs, assistance and both emotional/educational support to local organizations in the Puget Sound area.

For 2024, Argosy Cruises set a goal of $45,000 which they are excited to announce they have met! This is made up of a portion of Christmas Ship tickets and onboard sales. On January 23rd, Argosy Cruises commemorated the good news by presenting Alan Fisco, President of the Seattle Times, with a donation at their annual check ceremony. The Fund is close to reaching their goal of $3 million and Argosy Cruises has been a consistent contributor with annual donations totaling out to over $800,000.

Feel Like Giving? Donate Any Time of the Year!

The Fund For Those In Need has been supporting local agencies for 46 years, providing vital services and resources for many throughout the Greater Seattle Area. As stated from their website, \”help is at a critical high\” and supporting The Fund means helping many women, families, and children who depend on these donations. The holiday season is always a great time to give back, but the act of support is a year-round effort! Make a direct impact. Below are a few organizations under The Fund:

AKIN works on disrupting the systemic and multi-generational cycles of inequity.

LIFEWIRE supports domestic violence survivors on their journey to safety and stability.

TREEHOUSE supports kids in foster care by helping them succeed in multiple areas of life such as education and social experiences.
