I’m hardly an NFL analyst, but I do listen to ESPN radio for about 15 minutes a day.

I really think that Brett Favre has really tarnished his name and reputation with all of this junk that’s been going on about him wanting to come back. I used to be a big fan of him, but now he’s lost a lot of my respect.

I’m a big fan of franchise players – guys who stick with one team their whole career. However, you don’t see that much anymore. Kevin Garnett left Minnesota a couple of seasons ago. Sure he has a ring now, but where’s the loyalty. Really there is none.

Michael Jordan came out of retirement not once, but twice. Why? I honestly still don’t know.

I think the most similar thing I can think of next to Favre is Joe Montana. I don’t know if he was drafted in S.F. but he made his career there. Then… eh, I think I’ll go to Kansas City. And what happened there? A whole lot of nothing. Compare that to Steve Young who filled his shoes quite nicely in San Francisco.

And it’s not just limited to sports. I think that Jay-Z recorded more tracks during the year and a half than he had before he retired. (When I come back like Jordan/Wearin’ the 4-5)

So, I know it’s not my job to be a sports analyst, but I just have to wonder where’s the loyalty and comittment to team? You can call all of these things “team sports,” but at the end of the day, everyone is just out for themselves.

So, I’m again referencing a conversation with Colin Walker. Last week we had a brief discussion about friendships and the internet (see comments below his post).

Since then I’ve been found myself returning to the topic in my thoughts time and again. Even last night I found myself wondering about which of my friendships it is simply time to let go of. I know that may sound heartless, but which is worse: being emotionally invested in someone who does not reciprocate or appearing cold because you just stop calling?

As I look back across the course of the last 10 years I realize that the closest friendships that I have are the ones that seemed least likely when they began. In most of those cases, though, I can think back to the very instant that we met and remember thinking that there was nothing unique about it. In fact, one of my best friends now I absolutely hated when we met.

If you clicked through to the link above, you would have seen that our conversation had to do with the fact that you can reconnect to old acquaintences online with the click of a button. Colin made the point that if you weren’t already in contact, then having Facebook or whatever will probably not help the situation too much. I didn’t want to admit it at the time, but its true. Of the few long-lasting friends I have, most of them are not really big internet users and that may limit the regularity of our communication. However, I would have to admit that when we do connect it is always much deeper than a “wall post.” In contrast, I may have “friends” that are online nearly as much as I am that I talk to far more than I do my closest friends, but those relationships don’t carry near as much weight.

But here’s what concerns me. There are always those 5-10 yr friendships that are pretty stable (though they do decline in number over time). Then there are those 2-4 yrs that are rapidly decaying (these are the ones that beg the question of when to let go). Then there are those present tense friendships that are still in their growth phase. Maybe this is sick of me, but I’m sitting here wondering which of them will stay true and which will go their own way (not that it has to be abad thing for that to happen).

Truth is, as time has proven, the ones that stick will probably the ones I least expect.

Today was one such day.

Anyway, while we were playing our first song I noticed this kid (kindergartener) dancing all over right in the front. He was getting down. His name was Spencer. When we finished the song, the following conversation ensued.

Spencer: Um, sir. (directed at me)
Ryan: Uh, yeah? (completely puzzled because someone is about to come on stage and do something else)
Spenser: Did you see what I was doing?
Ryan: Yeah, buddy. I saw you. What were you doing?
Spencer: I was ROCKIN!

That’s awesome.

We had basically the exact same conversation after the last song as well. Good stuff. Thought it might brighten your day.
