It’s Valentine’s Day!

One day out of the year we dedicate to roses, chocolates and diamonds, mixed in with pink and red visions of romance and a baby wearing wings, carrying a bow and arrow. Wait a minute, a baby with a weapon? That's right. So, what makes Cupid right for the job? I'm not so sure he is, Eros might actually be better qualified for the position.

Both Ancient Greece and Rome had their own mythology and pantheon of deities to worship. Over the centuries the two groups have been combined, separated or listed side by side for comparison. Needless to say it’s sometimes difficult to know what’s true to their mythology and what isn’t. That said we definitely know that Eros was the God of Love for the Ancient Greeks and Cupid is the God of Erotic Love and Sex for the Romans. Unfortunately, that’s where it stops being clear-cut and simple.

In Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, Edith Hamilton states Eros was depicted as a “beautiful serious youth”. H.J Rose’s says in A Handbook of Greek Mythology that he was “handsome young athlete”, but before both of these characterizations were made he represented love, lust and intercourse as one of the oldest gods in Greece. Where worshipping of the god was important it’s been discovered he was the deity for attractive young men and boys. Across the Adriatic, Cupid was depicted as a child who had the same traits as those already noted. Like Janus, it was questioned whether Cupid had two distinctive sides to his persona or was actually two separate individuals.

After gaining Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty, as his mother along with three prospective fathers, Eros image of male lust and sex was further encouraged. One probable father was Hermes, a phallic god and another was Ares, God of War. It seems even in the ancient world a warrior encouraged a woman’s desire to grow exponentially. The third potential was Aphrodite’s father, Zeus. This union was viewed as sexual passion so strong and out of control it has no limitations. This association with the uncontrollable made Eros a dangerous god. The parent issue was similar for Cupid. Jupiter and Venus were also noted as his parents, as were Nyx and Erebus. Both possible couples helped define and solidify various qualities of his character.

Both Cupid and Eros seem fairly interchangeable at this stage, except for their appearances and the Ancient Greek god having elements of danger associated with him. It's at this point the two figures actually appear to swap personalities.

It wasn’t until Alexandrian times that women come into picture for Eros. This happened when the ideal relationship between men and women moved from being mere sexual desire to one of love from the heart. Because of this supposed softening to his characterization, the God of Love’s importance to men was lessened. With this change in attributes, as well as society moving away from worshipping gods and goddess, he became a chubby child with a wicked bow, seen mainly in connection with Aphrodite and subordinate to others.

Cupid gained some clout as a god of love with an appearance on the romantic stage with the Cupid and Psyche’s love story, written in the second century [A.D.] by Apuleius. The story depicted Cupid as a young man and involved very adult issues found in romance like love, jealousy, mistrust and forgiveness. Unfortunately, it seems as if it wasn’t enough to allow him to be depicted as anything but a baby for Valentine’s Day.

So, what do you think? Does it make sense for Cupid to be the image of Valentine's Day? He is a child afterall. Maybe Eros [erotic love] would be better suited for the holiday that encourages lovers to put their hearts out there for their lovers to see and experience.

Earlier I mentioned going to the Oxford Bar in Edinburgh from Ian Rankin's Rebus books and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So, when we went south to Leeds in Yorkshire where I went to university, we thought why not visit a few spots I put into seriously kinky My Angel from the Good Bad and Kinky series?

We were shopping, walking from arcade to street, when I realized we were trolling through the arcade I'd chosen to host a sexy lingerie shop the couple visit and pick up a few interesting items. It was dressed for Christmas but not in an over-the-top kind of way ... I found the decor rather elegant.

Next we meandered down Briggate and once we passed the Victoria Quarter and Harvey Nichols, we kept our eyes peeled to the right and there it was, up high, a sign denoting the pub we were looking for and it was there. Walking down the subtle short enclosed pathway or gulley, we stepped out into an open space between the buildings. From there it was a simple choice of where to go for lunch ... Whitelock's!

With a fine pint of Old Peculier ... honestly, the BEST! ... we sat down for a beef pie, monster chips, peas and sprouts while talking with the sweetest older gentleman ever. He was a local who had had a stroke so everything "fine" or "fair" which was fine with us. You see that is the best part of visiting the older pubs, the locals you find within on a cold day taking a rest and a pint.

This year we decided to shake things up and fly into Edinburgh instead of London and take a couple days to see the city again. Let me state this at the beginning, we're going to fly that way again and stay for longer, we loved Edinburgh before and fell in love all over again.

We were staying just off the Royal Mile so walked it a few times and Princes Street even more, but something we'd never done before and wanted to do this time was see the Royal Britannia. This is the royal yacht that has recently be laid to rest in Leith and boy was it worth a visit.

I admit to thinking before we got there that it would be a bit boring and we'd move through quickly, boy was I wrong. It was fascinating to see how the royals and laymen lived together in such small quarters, boy to I mean small!

Halfway through the 3+ hour tour we stepped into the tea shop and had lunch, so decadent. Cutie ordered a cuppa [actually a little pot that holds about three cups] and I a hot chocolate ... yum! From there I had a sandwich ... crusts were left on, and the cutie had cullen skink, a fishy thing so I passed on tasting but he enjoyed.

From top to bottom, rear to stern [?], we took in the ship and would recommend others make the short and easy trip out to see it.

There was shopping to do, it was Christmas time after all, and pubs to visit. The two I'll note here are Oxford Bar from Ian Rankin's Rebus books and yeah, it is exactly how he writes it! The other was Royal Cafe from Chariots of Fire movie. Nope, don't remember the scene but the friend of ours who lives there and recommended a few places to us said it was a must visit and he was so very right. We loved this pub so much we went next door to the restaurant for dinner.

My problem with eating in Scotland is the copious amount of seafood but here they had a single ever so small quail leg resting on a cushion of garlic mash potatoes for me and a bowl of mulles et frites for the cutie followed by a glass of fine whisky for afters ... a when in Rome kind of thing.

The song, with its universal appeal, has been adopted by people around the world as a way to bid a fond farewell to the old and welcome the new with open arms. Kiss your friends, hug strangers, and shake the hand of your enemy, all while sharing toasts with whisky.

And now the real party begins with first-footing!

First-footing takes place in Scotland and by some in northern England - we do it where my cutie comes from. It's a custom that has been around for a long time. Roots to this tradition go asfar back as the Viking invasions and have changed little. A lump of coal, whisky and an oat cake are the most common gifts to offer and in return, uisge beatha, water of life (whisky), and food are shared, and then leave by the back door.

Sound fun? It is because throughout the night, as long as the chilled limbs can move, and one more dram can be shared, first-footing continues, house to house, party to party.

“Are you really a vampire?” Ella placed dirty pint glasses into hot water and began cleaning them. There was nothing glamorous about being a bartender, but it was a job in a town that claimed vampires were real.

She posed the question to her co-worker that night. Josh was young with a massive ego due to good looks. Actually, he was hot, which had the make-me, take-me, turn me into a vamp set seeking him out in hopes for a night of wicked sex. She wasn’t one of them, but was curious about his claim to fame.

“Sure am, and well over a thousand years old. Don’t I look fucking great for an old codger?” His flexing arm muscle was hard to miss in the tight t-shirt he wore. He placed a kiss on the bulging bicep while wiggling his eyebrows at her in invitation. She couldn’t hold back her laughter his actions brought bursting from her lips.

“Sexy as sin and ready to claim a pet,” she said while returning cleaned glasses to the rack. She’d dropped the pet reference nonchalantly to see how much he actually knew about vampires and he’d passed right over it.

“So, you’re ready to be my dinner tonight? I have a collar waiting for you to wear. You’ll look fucking hot with it on, and nothing else. It’s leather and full of d-rings. I’ll hook you to the wall and keep you steady for me to fuck and suck dry.” Josh whispered how he wanted to possess her body as he slowly stroked a finger down her exposed neck.

Ella shivered at his touch and turned toward the shout from a delegate for the hen night crowd that had taken up the far corner of the pub. There were about fifteen ladies, aged from eighteen to sixty, wearing matching t-shirts stating they were attending the bride’s Last Stand. One had obviously come forward for another round.

“What can I get you?” She wiped down the bar and waited to hear the order.

“Twelve Bloody shots, two with an added Barbed,” the woman shouted over the noise. The pub was busy, but not so loud that she’d needed to holler. Looking at her closely, Ella guessed she was somewhat sober and the eldest.

“How are the ladies holding up?” she asked while pulling out the required glasses and lining them up across the bar. After filling them with ice cubes, she started measuring two ounces of cranberry vodka and a splash of both orange and lime juice.

“They’re drunk, so these are the last. I can’t handle the modern day hen night. Mine was a couple glasses of wine at our local the night before, not a weekend away spent getting wrecked.” The customer laughed and then helped her put the glasses on a tray.

“I’ll carry the tray, if you wouldn’t mind taking these two so we can keep them separate,” Ella suggested while pouring an ounce of Absinthe in the two glasses she’d set aside. Whoever ordered the two Barbed cocktails was in for a nasty headaches in the morning and, hopefully, nothing else.

The corner was raucously loud, full of talk about sex and the boyfriends, husbands, and a soon-to-be husband they were doing it with. There were plenty of dirty details shared that Ella found hard to believe actually took place. The ladies were probably more vanilla in the bedroom than kinky, which Ella personally preferred.

After handing out the drinks, she started back to the bar when one of the girls chased her down for a private word. She thought the young woman was going to order another round of drinks and tried to think of a way to say no. Except for Grandma, the entire group was a drink beyond over served.

“The bloke behind the counter, is he available? You see, my friend, the bride-to-be, is totally hot for him and, well, you know how it is. She wants a last shag before the ring goes on for good. We heard down in Leeds about a guy in Whitby who has a sexy bite that leaves you weak and a pierced willy that’s totally wicked to ride. That’s fucking hot.”

Oh boy, that was not what she’d expected the other woman to say. It wasn’t going to happen.

“No, sorry, he’s with me,” she confided with a wink and went back to the bar. She picked up glasses as she made her way through the room. Stopping at a few tables, she chatted with the locals she’d befriended during her short time at the pub.

“Would you like another, Sean? Last call is coming up.”

“Thank you, Ella.” It was dark inside the pub and she tried to catch a glimpse of his face, but couldn’t see much. The man was a mystery to her in many ways, which was odd since she could usually read anyone. No, Sean was a slate wall of sorts. Cool, hard and smooth, but everyone had a weak spot and he was hers.

November 5th is Bonfire night, a British celebration remembering the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. A group of English Roman Catholics organized and came up with a plan to destroy tyrannical rule by King James I of England and the Protestant Aristocracy. Guy Fawkes was the man chosen to blow up the Palace of Westminster [or the Houses of Parliament] but he was caught before this happened. After being tortured, he and other conspirators were found guilty of treason, they were hung, drawn and quartered. Apparently Fawkes escaped the hanging by getting free and jumping from the scaffolding and broke his neck. After that, he was still drawn and quartered.

In addition it goes nice with the Hickory Smoked cheddar they sprinkle on the stew right before serving.

BaBa Traraso’s (okay, really Paulette’s) Chicken Stew

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 or 2 stalks celery, cut into bite-size pieces
2 carrots, peeled, cut into bite-size pieces
1 small onion, chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper (see note about salt below)
2 (14 1/2-ounce) cans chopped tomatoes
2 (14-ounce) cans low-salt chicken broth
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces (or ¼ cup or less of dried)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
4 chicken breast with ribs (about 1 1/2 pounds total)
1 (15-ounce) can organic kidney beans, drained (rinsed if not organic)
2 (15-ounce) cans of diced potatoes
1 (15-ounce) can of corn

Serving suggestion: Honey Wheat Crusty Bread or Lemon Rosemary Zucchini Bread (recipes in A Tango Trinity

Heat the oil in a heavy 5 1/2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add the celery, carrot, potatoes, and onion. Sauté the vegetables until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Stir in the tomatoes with their juices, chicken broth, basil, tomato paste, bay leaf, and thyme. Add the chicken breasts; press to submerge.

Bring the cooking liquid to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer gently uncovered until the chicken is almost cooked through, turning the chicken breasts over and stirring the mixture occasionally, about 25 minutes. Using tongs transfer the chicken breasts to a work surface and cool for 5 minutes. Discard the bay leaves. Add the kidney beans to the pot and simmer until the liquid has reduced into a stew consistency, about 10 minutes.

Discard the skin and bones from the chicken breasts. Shred or cut the chicken into bite- size pieces. Return the chicken meat to the stew. Bring the stew just to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. (We don’t add any salt, for us the ingredients provide that.)

Ladle the stew into serving bowls and serve with the bread. Grated cheese can be added as a garnish before placing on table (Hickory Smoked is our favorite).

Makes six or more servings, depending on the bowl size. Great frozen and reheated later, too!

And there you have it, a classic burned in the twenty-first century and because of shuttered stupidity no less. How embarassing is that?!?

Stepping off my platform for another year doesn't mean the subject is forgotten ... I don't ever forget there are people out there trying to tell others what they and their children can and can't read.

To end on a lighter note, I've seen the trailer for The Hobbit film and it looks wonderful ... go see it December 14.

We’re celebrating the new cookbook being put out by All Romance eBooks called Passionate Cooks. It’s a collection of the favorite recipes from romance authors. My contribution is the Orgasmic Cheesecake and what is more perfect with dessert after a nice meal than an after dinner drink, or perhaps coffee with a bit of a “kick”.

I developed, through arduous trial and error and tastings, some bourbon recipes to celebrate my cowboy series. In my newest release, Flanked (Studs in Spurs, Book 5) I have my professional bull rider Garret James drinking bourbon and cola. But being a former bartender, I couldn’t resist coming up with something a bit more creative to do with that bourbon. Below is one of the recipes I came up with. It’s tasty, strong and oh so good to warm you and your cowboy up on a cold autumn night along with a slice of that cheesecake and a nice roaring fire perhaps…

Banned Books Week: Witchcraft and Sorcery is a problem, seriously ... NOT!

Yes, in the 21st century there are actually people who are concerned about witchcraft and sorcery, not just in practice but also in Fiction, young adult fiction to be precise.

After all I've said this week, I know none of you are surprised to find out that the entire Harry Potter series by JK Rowling was banned/challenged. Where I get my laughs is from the reasons stated for why they should be pulled off shelves.

Here are a few from the Banned Books 2007 Resource Guide:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Retained at Orange Grove Elementary School in Whittier, Calif [2000]. It was challenged for dealing with magic and bad experiences.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Challenged, but retained in Frankfort, Ill. School District [2000]. Parents were concerned that the book contains lying and smart-aleck retorts to adults.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Challeneged, but retained in Arab, Ala. school libraries and accelerated reader programs [2000] over objections that the author "is a member of the occult and the book encourages children to practice witchcraft."

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Challenged, but retained in the Newfound Area School District in Bristol, N.H. [2000] despite an objection the book "is scary".

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Removed by the Wilsona School District trustees from a list recommended by a parent-teacher committee for the Vista San Gabriel, Calif. Elementary School library [2006] along with twenty-three other books. ... The Wilson School District board approved new library book-selection guidelines in wake of trustees' controversial decision. Books now cannot depict drinking alcohol, smoking, drugs, sex, including "negative sexuality, implied or explicit nudity, cursing, violent crime or weapons, gambling, foul humor, and dark content."

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Nope, I didn't change a word ... bad experiences, smart alecks, scary, dark content ... were all reasons given. Ridiculous! It looks like all the books can be borrowed for free from Pottermore through Amazon if you're a Prime member, go read them all over again!

The Cabernet Sauignon is full of black cherry, currant and plum flavors with a touch of spiciness. This wine would pair well with red meats, firm cheeses and pastas with red sauce.

Banned Books Week: The Queen of Fabulous Books, period!

An author who seems to have a permanent place in the hearts of challengers is Judy Blume. I have no idea why. As a child I loved reading her books and I am not damaged from the experience.

This year's Banned Books Week has me thinking of Blume, not just because her books are often on the top 10 challenged [oddly enough not this year] but more because she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I knew then I'd dedicate a day to showcasing Judy Blume's banned/challenged books and here you go:

Banned Books Week: Do people know what FICTION means?

Fiction is defined as:

Prose literature, esp. short stories and novels, about imaginary events and people.

Invention or fabrication as opposed to fact.

When it comes to Banned Books Week, I often think the challengers forget this one little word and its meaning. Yes, we learn from books, particularly non-fiction, and others are sheer entertainment.

What I want to spend my time reading may not appeal to the next person, but that's the beauty of the 1st amendment ... we get to choose where to spend our time and not have it forced on us.

Have you chosen a Banned/Challenged book to read?

Usually I read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, but I'm changing it up this year and going for Dracula by Bram Stoker.

Whitby, Stoker and Dracula are on my mind and you'll soon discover why *cough, Taste for Blood, cough*, but in the meantime, I want to know why this happened in 1994:

Elminated from required reading lists for juniors and sendiors in advanced English classes at the Colony High School in Lewisville, Tex. because "the book contains unacceptable descriptions in the introduction, such as 'Dracular is a the sympton of a wish, largely sexual, that we wish we did not have.'" [Banned Books 2007 Resource Book by Robert P Doyle]

I don't remember reading that and dang if it doesn't suit why its on my mind, so I shall read it.
