Another sluggish start, another game spent wondering what exactly the Trojans are. They finish 9–3, which sounds impressive until you remember that they beat everyone they were supposed to beat and lost to everyone they were supposed to lose to. A predictable season wrapped in the aura of an unpredictable program.

In this week’s Untitled Notre Dame USC Football Podcast, Michael (long-time USC fan) and Greg (Notre Dame expert) swap takes on how both programs are doing 3 weeks into the 2025 season. The tone is equal parts excitement and concern—USC is showing flashes, Notre Dame is under more scrutiny—especially on defense.

Greg was at the Texas A&M game in South Bend, and though tailgates were subdued, once the action started, the crowd was electric—“one of the loudest ever” at Notre Dame Stadium. The final play loss stung heavily. Emotions ran high.

The defense, historically a point of pride, is lagging. Key issues:

• Zone vs. man confusion — in the first half vs Texas A&M, the zone scheme got shredded (161 yards allowed on few attempts). They switched to more man-coverage in the second half with better results, but perhaps too late.
• Lack of pass rush — almost zero pressure, very few sacks. The front seven haven’t generated enough disruption.
• Inconsistency & sloppy play — breakdowns at crucial moments (missed tackles, penalties, confusion) make big games difficult.

The annual matchup between Notre Dame and USC—the very inspiration for this podcast—still hasn’t been renewed. Greg believes Notre Dame should walk away from the negotiating table, while Michael is calling the USC brain trust cowards for dragging their feet. Needless to say, emotions are running high.

We then turn our focus solely to USC. Expectations are modest for Michael. Most of last year’s 7–6 squad returns, but it’s hard to know what to expect. There’s real excitement around transfer running back Waymond Jordan and Makai Lemon, but beyond them, the roster is full of question marks. Greg reminds us that USC hasn’t won a game in the Central Time Zone since before this podcast even began.

Defensively, the Trojans still lack havoc plays—especially sacks. If this unit is going to succeed, Eric Gentry must stay healthy. Fortunately for USC, Missouri State is on the schedule this weekend—an obvious win and a straightforward way to notch their first victory.

Happy Holidays everyone! It’s been a while, but we are back. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish won a college football playoff game, and the USC Trojans are gearing up for the Las Vegas Bowl. Before we get into football we talk about the holidays, Michael’s trip to USC, Sandwich meats, and what kids eat.

We start football talk with Notre Dame’s CFP win over Indiana. The Irish pretty much dominated the game, making Indian look like they didn’t belong in the playoff. This leads to a rousing discussion about the teams that made the college football playoff and who was deserving of the bid. Getting back to the game we praise Jeremiyah Love and chuckle at Curt Gignetti’s scared coaching.

We move on to Notre Dame’s next playoff game against Georgia. Its lucky for the Irish to get Georgia’s backup quarterback but they are still a very good team. Notre Dame loses Rylie Mills for this game, which is not ideal, but they are built for close games regardless.

Finally, we end on the Trojans and their Las Vegas Bowl game against Texas A&M. The fun part of this game is, with all the players leaving USC for the transfer portal, it’s unclear who will actually be playing in the game. All the random players hitting the field for USC will be exciting. The game itself almost doesn’t matter.

This past weekend had all the emotions. It is a USC Trojan sandwich on this episode, we start and end with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and discuss the Trojans in the middle. There is no better place to start than with a despondent Greg after a Fighting Irish home field loss to Northern Illinois. It was a boring, poor showing for the Irish. The offense looked inept and failed to make anything happen. Quarterback Riley Leonard had a terrible game and could barely throw the ball down the field. The Notre Dame defense was fine but failed to make a big stop when it mattered. We try to figure out what is wrong and can it be fixed.

In the middle of the episode, we dive into the USC Trojans. We’ll break down their recent performances against Utah State. It was the first Trojan shutout since 2011. The Trojans continued to look competent, with good tackling and solid offensive execution, even Lincoln Riley is coming out of his shell. The bye week couldn’t have happened at a worse time for USC, but that’s ok this team will rally around Miller Moss and play good football

We talk about that and more adventures from Greg in the press box. Somehow that segues into a brief conversation about new Trojan defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn. Which then brings us to the topic du jour of this week, the playoff committee and what a terrible job they do. This is compiled with no one talking about the Alabama sized elephant in the room, the cheating cheaters of Michigan. Things are so bleak that Greg starts the podcast off with a rant against the media and their treatment of Deion Sanders and Jim Harbough. Gregg is not a fan of the kid gloves being used. Then we get to USC’s loss to the Oregon Ducks and what is there to say. The Trojan defense was the same while the offense continued to look uninspiring. This game really made us question LIncoln Riley and his ability to call an offensive game. We then talk a little about Notre Dame and what’s going on with the offensive line and Sam Hartman’s inability to run playaction. Then we lightly touch on the upcoming games against UCLA and Wake Forest. Finally, the most important topic of the season comes up, Greg will be on TV in beautiful South Bend breaking down some Fighting Irish film.

Halloween came late for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans, with both teams losing this week. We start with the big news, the Grinch will no longer be able to steal Christmas now that USC has fired defensive coordinator Alex Grinch after the Trojans 52-42 loss to Washington. The Washington Offense scored at will against USC. The defense looked terrible and only made a few big plays all night. Even though there were still some strong blame the offense vibes toward the end of this game, the Huskies scored so many points something had to be done. The craziest thing about all this is with a win against Oregon this coming weekend USC is still in the PAC-12 title picture. If the Trojans can blame the defense than Notre Dame can blame their offense. The Fighting Irish offense continued to look boring and predictable against Clemson. Then the Notre Dame defense wasn’t its usual great self, all adding up to a Fighting Irish loss. We then talk about if this is a wasted season for Notre Dame and what comes next. Throughout the episode we also sprinkle in praise for podcast favorite team the Arizona Wildcats. Beardown.

Now Caleb Williams may be a world class football player, but coach LIncoln Riley has failed to impress anyone lately, especially with how the offense has looked. People are saying that Riley looks a little like former USC coach Clay Helton. This episode is not all Trojans, and we do touch on Notre Dames upcoming game against Pitt for a bit at the end.

Rivalry week is over. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans faced off over the weekend, and inevitably one of us is sad. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish dismantled the USC Trojans and secured a 48-20 victory in South Bend. The Notre Dame defense made the USC offense look ill prepared and generally inept. Caleb Williams has a tough time getting anything going, and without him the Trojans looked pedestrian. Per usual the USC defense left much to be desired. No turnovers, no sacks and some inexplicable coverages. Not to be out down, while still trying to claw their way back into the game the Trojan special teams gave up a kickoff return touchdown. It was a rough night all around. Though the Fighting Irish won and the defense looked great, the Notre Dame offense was still uninspired. The nice thing for the Trojans is this loss has no bearing on the Pac-12 title. While Notre Dame looks to cruise through the end of the season, with their only test being Clemson.

We also discuss if Lincoln RIley would leave and Caleb Williams’ NFL Draft prospects. You also have to listen all the way through because Greg guts out a bloody nose.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans were both victorious this past weekend, and yet both teams left many things to be desired. We start with some light housekeeping and Greg’s new foray into other Notre Dame sports. Then we get right into the Trojans and their embarrassing win against Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes. It was another leaky sieve performance for the USC defense. The Trojans never trailed and the Buffs never had the ball with a chance to tie, but the final score was not visually appealing. In a twist of personalities it is suggested by someone on this podcast that the USC offense should have done a better job. With Arizona on the horizon another close game on the scoreboard could be likely. The Fighting Irish have the reverse problem, the defense is good and the plodding offense is difficult to watch. Greg tries to blame the receivers, while Michel puts the onus on the guy throwing the ball. Next week Notre Dame plays another ranked opponent, but despite all the negative talk the Fighting Irish should win and cover.

When we finally get to football and Notre Dame’s victory over FCS Tennessee State, there isn’t really much to talk about. The Fighting Irish were the superior team and showed it throughout the game. Greg was never worried. Now, this wouldn’t be a college football podcast if we didn’t mention Colorado and Coach Prime. Though the Buffs looked good last week, neither Michael nor Greg would swap Colorado’s skill players for Notre Dame’s. We then move on to another blowout, The USC victory over Nevada. Caleb Williams looked like his usual amazing self, even if Greg informed Michael the talking heads are starting to take their shots at the reigning Heisman winner. We also get an update on the Raleek Brown situation from last week. Coming up, it’s more of the same next week for Notre Dame and the Trojans, who both should win their week 2 matchups.

The Alex Grinch apologist tour that started last season just keeps on rolling this week, and we also talk about USC skill players, highlighting the play of Zachariah Branch and wondering about Raleek Brown’s future. We then turn our attention to Notre Dame, who did whatever they wanted to against Navy in Sam Hartman’s Irish debut. The Navy team may have been overmatched, but there were still some questionable decisions made by the coaches. In such a lopsided game it is hard to predict what happens next week. Speaking of next week, both the Trojans and Fighting Irish have games against another pair of weak teams. USC plays Nevada at home, and Notre Dame plays Tennessee State, the first FCS opponent in Fighting Irish history.

Bowl season has come and gone with mixed results for both the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans. It was more of the same for the Trojans, lots of points on offense coupled with lots of points given up on defense. This loss was especially bad since USC had a seemingly insurmountable lead with 5 minutes left in the game against Tulane. This lackluster defense performance is probably the end for defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, since the Trojans can’t waste Heisman winner Caleb Williams’ probable last year. The Fighting Irish on the other hand, came back from being down early and giving three non-offensive to rally and win their bowl game. Tyler Buchner was all over the place during the game, which showed why Notre Dame had to go out and get the best quarterback in the portal Sam Hartman. We also lightly touch on Michigan losing and the National Title Game with Georgia and TCU.

The USC quarterback did it all against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were able to keep it kinda close, but the early scoring by the Trojans was too much to overcome, and of course the USC defense created some turnovers. Next week the USC plays Utah in a the Pac 12 Championship game.

Notre Dame beat up on Boston College and USC beat cross town rival UCLA. We start with the game against Boston College. Greg was able to cheer on the Fighting Irish in person from the press box. It was a cold, but fun senior day, and a great trip to Notre Dame Stadium. Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison even intercepted three passes in Greg’s honor. Up Next is USC’s victory over UCLA. The Trojan defense surprising sealed the victory, and Caleb Williams became the Heisman frontrunner with his stellar performance. Both teams now head into the greatest intersectional rivalry in all of sports this weekend in Los Angeles. Anything is possible on Saturday, and Michael and Greg obviously believe in their respective sides.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish cruised to victory this weekend, while the USC Trojans were on a bye. It what seems like a low key week we find more than enough to talk about. Things start off on the melancholy side, with Michael still bummed over the Trojans loss to Utah. Though the season outlook hasn’t changed much for USC, a lot of the fun has left the building. Before we shift to actual football and Notre Dame beating UNLV there is some transfer portal talk and the transfer portal haves and have-nots. Some people were upset with the Fighting Irish and their performance against the Rebels, but a win is a win. Greg then talks himself into a Notre Dame victory over Syracuse this weekend. We then do a thought experiment about the Fighting Irish’s fate if Brian Kelly were still the coach. Finally we get to USC’s game at Arizona. AS the conversation progressed Greg convinced himself Arizona has a potent offense, while Michael still has his full faith in Lincoln Riley and the Trojans.

There was a similar problem for Notre Dame against Stanford however the required point total was a little less. Michael is so distraught; there is even a Clay Helton mention, while Greg tells the story of his less than ideal viewing experience over the weekend. A bad time was had by all.

In the end Caleb Williams and the rest of the Trojan offense was just too hard to stop. Washington State comes done to Los Angeles next week. We also talk about a top offensive line prospect flipping from Notre Dame to USC, and play sliding doors with Tua Tagovailoa’s recruitment. Even though Notre Dame didn’t play this week, we still preview their game against the BYU Cougars in Las Vegas. This game is a real litmus test for the Fighting Irish.

It was a winning weekend for both the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans. This week’s episode starts with the Trojans and their narrow victory over the Oregon State Beavers. It was an ugly game for USC and they almost lost, but a win is a win. It’s also nice this game was on the Pac-12 Network so no one saw how bad the Trojan offense played. That is, except for running back Travis Dye. In order to seal the victory USC had to continue their amazing turnover streak. Next week is a reeling Arizona State team so the Trojans should win handily. The Fighting Irish on the other hand rolled over North Carolina. The team looked good in every facet of the game. Backup quarterback Drew Pyne played well, as did all of Notre Dame’s running backs. The Fighting Irish are on a nice two game winning streak heading into the bye.

Things finally started to come together for Notre Dame and then they tried their hardest to let Cal back in the game and lose. A win is a win, and even though there may be many flaws you have to start somewhere. The Trojans on the other hand have no visible flaws on the offensive side of the ball. Lincoln Riley has USC scoring on almost every drive. The Trojans production makes watching the games extremely fun, and it puts the defense in a good position. Let’s see how long this can continue for.

The first game of the season is finally here for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans. The start of the season brings hope and exciting for everyone, and anything is possible. We start with the Trojans. USC’s week 1 opponent is Rice, but it doesn’t matter who the Trojans are playing. Everyone is waiting for the start of the Lincoln Riley era. The expectations for the offense are unlimited and any number of players could become stars. The defense is a bit of a question mark, but they have to be better than last year. The week 1 task is a bit more difficult for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish who have to travel to Columbus and face the Ohio State Buckeyes. Notre Dame will being playing the role of underdog, and getting that first victory will be difficult for Marcus Freeman and the Irish. All eyes will be on Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner on offense while the defensive line will have to show up to stop the Buckeyes. This should be an interesting game where anything could happen. We also have a little Brian Kelly talk for old time’s sake.

The season is finally here. The 2022-23 college football season is about to kickoff for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans, so we thought it was time for a season preview. Season 8 starts with the Trojans and all of their new players. It’s hard for anyone to guess what is possible when this group of players either hasn’t played with each other, hasn’t played in awhile or both. All the questions make it more fun to root for Lincoln Riley and the Trojans since truly anything is possible. USC isn’t the only team with questions. Notre Dame may have notable offensive and defensive lines, but the Irish have a first year coach, quarterback, defensive coordinator and kicker that give a reason for pause. In addition to all the first year players and coaches, Notre Dame is also very think at receiver. All these facts could lead to a lackluster season for the Irish, but everything could also come together for the team. After discussing both teams we have to take some time to talk about the Manti Te’o documentary. Let’s just say there is a difference of opinion on things.

The season in meaningless, there is nothing left on the line, so how can the players get excited for the games. We also talk a little about the coaching search and post season awards before we switch to Norte Dame.  The Fighting Irish played Georgia Tech at home and it was senior day. The seniors went out with a bang shutting out the Yellow Jackets. The game was so lopsided there is not much to talk about so we go straight to College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame is ranked 6^th but the possible to move up is there. However, Greg is worried about a team from the Big 12 jumping the Irish. USC’s game against Cal was postponed until December because of COVID and their best prospect decommitted. It’s all hard times for the Trojans. It’s the complete opposite for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won again, and it was another example of what a competent program Brian Kelly has built at Notre Dame. The facts of the game against Virginia are not even important. The Fighting Irish should win out and we end doing college football playoff math.

After a spooky Halloween we are back to preview the USC Trojans’ game against the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s match up against the Navy Midshipmen.  We start the episode talking about the sad state of affairs that is the USC Trojans. Their best player is out for the season, they probably can’t make it to the Pac-12 title game and there is a weird two quarterback system being implemented. On top of all this, USC’s 2022 recruiting class consists of just nine players; mostly DBs. Things are not great for the Trojans. Who knows what will happen in Tempe. Notre Dame may be coming into the game against Navy rolling, but Greg is nervous and thinks this might be a trap game.  Navy has only two wins so Michael is less than concerned for the Irish. We also discuss how fans hate the incumbent in position battles and that the fans need to get off Kyle Hamilton’s back, he’s hurt. We end things talking about playoff positioning and predictions.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans both played football games this season, but the results were noticeably different. We start with the Trojans, who lost at home to the Utah Utes. It was another embarrassing loss for USC at home.  Just like with their other losses this season the Trojans could not get anything going when it mattered on offense and the defense could not stop anything. The lone bright spot was the play of USC wide receiver Drake London. Now Notre Dame may have won their game against Virginia Tech, but things started out similarly to last week. The Fighting Irish needed a switch at quarterback to get things going, and in the end they narrowly defeated Virginia Tech. The fourth quarter of this game was wild, and so was the refereeing. We else prep for both teams’ bye week and our trip to South Bend.

It was a busy weekend for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and The USC Trojans. We start with Notre Dame who suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of probable future USC head coach Luke Fickell and his Cincinnati Bearcats.  Greg wasn’t able to watch the game live, but gives a rundown of how he received game information and what it was like eventually watching the game knowing it was a loss. We also focus on Irish quarterback Jack Coan and how Notre Dame tends to not score points when he is in the game.  We also talk about the Irish’s kicking woes. When we switch gears to the Trojans it’s just another run of the mill victory for USC. Drake London was great, but the Clay Helton shadow still looms large over everything the Trojans do. It’s time to fully clean house. With that being the case USC could backdoor their way into a PAC-12 title game just like usual.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and The USC Trojans played in real football games this past weekend, and both won. We start with Notre Dame’s nail bitter overtime win against Florida State.  Even though the game was close and some things need some work, we were able to highlight some good things that happened, like the amazing Kyle Hamilton interception. There are some real issues for the Fighting Irish, but the important thing is they won. As for the Trojans, no one was able to actually watch the game because it was on the useless Pac-12 Network. IF USC wins a game and no one can watch it, did they even win? If you poll the average Trojan fan they did not. Everyone has issues with how USC played against San Jose state, but there are some positive trends for the Trojans and reasons to be excited for the season.

We start with USC who landed the top recruit in the nation Korey Foreman. We talk about what we are looking for on the tape, how to judge a player’s performance, position changes, and who we like. For the Trojans Michael is all in on quarterback Miller Moss, cornerback Prophet Brown and Joseph Manjack, the do it all receiver from Texas with a great name. The Fighting Irish recruits Greg has grown fond of are, high school Butkus award winner Prince Kollie and wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. Two more great names. We also talk about new Notre Dame transfer quarterback Jack Coan and new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman.

It was a rough weekend for the podcast, both the USC Trojans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost their conference championship games. We start with Notre Dame, who was beat handily in their rematch with the Clemson Tigers. The Fighting Irish had some early miscues that they never recovered from. Notre Dame went from bad to worse and never even really came close. That’s OK because the Irish will still play in the college football playoffs. As for the Trojans, they couldn’t pull of another fourth quarter miracle against the Oregon Ducks. This was a hard game to watch, and since USC has opted out of playing a bowl game, a tough loss to end the season on. We go into the question of if this season was a success or failure. Spoiler alert, it was not a success. We also do some of the usual Clay Helton spiel after a USC loss.

Many USC fans are upset with the coaching staff and the administration even though the football team was victorious. Michael understands the complaints, but wants the fans to enjoy what is going on. Greg helps break down the safety play of Talanoa Hufanga, and we have another discussion about USC being discussed in the same breath as the College Football Playoffs. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans both remain undefeated. Notre ended their regular season with a win over Syracuse. While the Trojans beat Washington State on a rare Sunday night game. The game started slowly for the Fighting Irish, but about halfway through Notre Dame started to run away with it. More important than the Fighting Irish win was Greg’s viral tweet about Jim Harbaugh, and what it felt like to be an internet star. We also discuss if this Notre Dame season was already a success. Unlike the Fighting Irish the Trojans jumped out to an insurmountable lead against Washington State and never looked back.  It was the best start USC has had to a game in awhile. The passing game was firing on all cylinders. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had four touchdowns in the first quarter. This was the most excited Michael has been about the Trojans in a while.

We had dueling games this weekend. Both the USC Trojans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish kicked off at 12:30 on Saturday. We start with Notre Dame and their game against Boston College. The Fighting Irish cruised to victory against the Eagles, but all anyone could talk about is ex-Notre Dame backup quarterback and current Boston College starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec.  All season long Fighting Irish quarterback Ian Book has been compared to Jurkovec. This game should put all those comparisons to rest. Once the Jurkovec talk ends we go over who else played well for Notre Dame.

The Trojans played another team from Arizona this weekend, and the game was pretty much the same as it was the previous week. USC needed fourth quarter heroics from Kedon Slovis to pull off the win. Michael uses this game as an opportunity to remind everyone this is how Clay Helton teams play and to expect anything different is crazy. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the number one ranked Clemson Tigers this weekend. This is the biggest win in more than twenty years for the Fighting Irish. We go through the entire rollercoaster of the game and all of the up and down emotions throughout the contest. This was a classic game that was played on the razor’s edge and will define many if the player’s Notre Dame careers. There were stars and big plays all over the field, but the guy who got it done was Ian Book. Congrats to Greg and Notre Dame on the big win.

We also get to talk about USC’s 9am season opener against Arizona State. It was business as usual for the Clay Helton era Trojans. And by that we mean inconsistency, penalties, and hoping USC’s better players outperform inferior competition. It’s a very special midweek podcast. Notre Dame has a big ACC clash with Clemson and USC kicks off their COVID shortened season against ASU, so we had to do something special. We start with the Fighting Irish and if they have a chance against one of the best teams in the country, the Clemson Tigers. Greg feels confident in the Notre Dame offensive line, but isn’t sure about the skill players. It goes without saying Kyle Hamilton and the defense are up to the test, but per usual everything rests on Ian Book’s shoulders. 

When it comes to the USC Trojans we couldn’t start talking about them without mentioning their ill fated NIL hype video. Please click. It’s a mess, an embarrassment, or some other atrocity. The video caused such a stir it was taken down in short order. It’s just another reminder of who is in charge at USC. As for football, Michael couldn’t be more excited about Kedon Slovis and the offense. This should be a very fun USC team to watch, and for the sake of this podcast make it to the college football playoffs and face Notre Dame.

The rust from the COVID layoff was definitely there, but the Fighting Irish did a lot of things right. The running backs were great, Kyle is healthy, Ian Book improved and JOK was feasting. During the game Michael had an aha moment about Notre Dame and their national standing. We also talk nicknames and some light Notre Dame USC recruiting to wrap things up.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans have not played football in weeks (much longer for the Trojans), but that’s not going to stop us from podcasting. The Trojans’ Pac-12 schedule is out and the internet is upset about the 9am kickoff to start the season on November 7^th. Michael on the other hand is more worried about the Trojans’ first opponent the Arizona State Sun Devils. Also, scheduling the Sun Devils first might have been a big F you from the Pac-12 to the Trojans. All this might not even matter, because if Notre Dame is any kind of example, it is very hard to keep COVID-19 under control. The recent outbreak in South Bend that caused the cancelation of the Irish’s game against Wake Forest may have spread all the way to the White House. Regardless of who got who sick, the Notre Dame administration is a shining example of how not to act in a pandemic. As for real football Greg is worried the Fighting Irish’s two week layoff may cause some issues against Florida State on Saturday. That is if the game is even played.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish really showed up this weekend and shutout the USF Bulls 52-0. USF was never in this game, and may have accomplished the worst special teams performance in modern football history. Notre Dame listened to Greg and added some variety to their passing game, which proved successful. Kyren Williams and the rest of the Fighting Irish running backs all looked strong. The broadcast team loved Tommy Tremble, and even though some players were “unavailable” the backs ups performed well. A good time was had by all. We even get to discuss some Pac 12 news this week, with a possible start date on the horizon.

We are back with another past rivalry game. Thanks to all the fans who voted in the twitter poll, we are rewatching the 1999 USC Trojans vs the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Besides all the usual Notre Dame USC antics the game is special to us because a few of the stars in this game were our contemporaries and local high school legends. This game features a 3 win Trojan team facing off against a 3 win Fighting Irish squad. Both teams have talented players, but also have the talent of finding new and interesting ways to lose football games. Both USC and Notre Dame were coached by notorious figures in Paul Hackett and Bob Davie. Some notable stars who suited up for this game were Jarious Jackson, R. Jay Soward, Jabari Holloway, Chad Morton, Grant Irons, and Mike Van Raaphorst. We also find out if Greg knows, Joey Getherall, Marcus Steele and Sulton Abdul-Malik. The game itself was actually very entertaining. The Trojans started off strong, but the Irish hung around and we were treated to an exciting 25-24 finish.

Sports are still on hold in 2020, so we hop back into the time machine and breakdown the 1989 rivalry game where the #9 ranked USC Trojans go to South Bend to face the #1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This was a back and forth battle between two very good teams. After a pregame brawl, the Trojans jumped out to an early lead, but Notre Dame fought back and eventually won in a very exciting 4^th quarter. This game featured legends like Rocket Ismail, Junior Seau and Coach Lou Holtz. In addition to those all time greats there were numerous other stars like Tony Rice, Todd Marinovich, Todd Lyght, John Jackson, Chris Zorich and Mark Carrier. We highlight all the big plays, list some underrated moments, talk about players forgotten in time who we loved and hated, try to describe football in 1989, and hand out a game MVP award. Enjoy. In 2005 the Trojans were the defending national champions ranked #1 in the country and Notre Dame was up and coming with new coach Charlie Weis ranked 9th nationally. This game was full of stars headlined by Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Brady Quinn. On the podcast we go over the biggest plays, name players we forgot about and hated, talked about what hasn’t changed for USC and Notre Dame, breakdown the broadcast and name an MVP. It’s our first podcast of 2020, and we need to catch everyone up on what happened with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans during our hiatus. We start with Notre Dame and their new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Some Fighting Irish faithful feel Rees is too young and doesn’t have enough experience, but he does have the element of surprise with a roster full of returning players. National signing day was uneventful for Notre Dame, however one recruit was lost due to some unexpected circumstances. When it comes to USC and recruiting the fan base is still full of anger over the Trojans poor showing in the recruiting rankings. To add insult to injury national media are constantly highlighting how poor this recruiting class is relative to USC’s usual results. The Trojans also hired to new coaches, defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and special teams coach Sean Snyder.

As for USC, they looked terrible in their bowl loss to Iowa. It was more of the same for the Trojans ending their up and down 2019 season. After the game USC fired some coaches, but based on recent history they will make the wrong decision regardless of who they hire. Hopefully this coaching stability can help the Trojans in their bowl game against Iowa. On the other hand, Notre Dame signed a very impressive recruiting class from all over the nation. This solid recruiting class was achieved in spite of departure of Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Chip Long. As Notre Dame heads into their bowl game with Iowa State it is unclear who will be calling plays, and it could be former Fighting Irish quarterback Tommy Rees.

The victory bell may be back at USC, but all anyone is talking about is will Clay Helton Keep his job. We make the case first for why he should continue as the Trojans coach and then why he should be fired. Over in South Bend Notre Dame made easy work of Boston College. For the fans, the game was the least important Fighting Irish football show on television, and all eyes were on the Notre Dame Fan Feed simulcast on the NBC Sports network featuring Darius Walker, Daelin Hayes and internet favorite Jessica Smetana. It seemed like a big hit, and brought all the problems with NBC’s broadcast, again.

Things were a lot easier for the Fighting Irish and they easily handled the Duke Blue Devils. Even in victory the Notre Dame fanbase is not happy and can always find reasons to complain.

Not only were the Trojans’ hoped of winning the PAC-12 South crushed tonight, but this loss means Clay Helton’s tenure as the USC head coach is most likely over. In addition to USC head coach speculation we talk about more terrible PAC-12 officiating, Kedon Slovis, Trojan injuries and their impact on play calling and more destiny talk. It’s not all Trojans tonight because Notre Dame had to fight to pull out a very late 4^th quarter comeback against Virginia Tech. For some Irish fans winning isn’t enough and players need to be held to the Notre Dame Standard, whatever that is. We also talk about how clutch Chase Claypool is, the incredible hold on the game winning extra point, and of course Kyle Hamilton.

The USC Trojans has big fourth quarter comeback victory on Friday, but everyone’s attention is focused on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s crushing blowout defeat to the Michigan Wolverines. Emotions were running so high we had to record the podcast right after the game Saturday night. Things did not go well for the Irish. The Ann Arbor rain rendered the Notre Dame offense was incompetent against Michigan’s defense. Irish quarterback Ian Book was unable to do anything, and in a change from everything we’ve seen so far this season the Notre Dame defense no showed against the Wolverines. We also take stock of who has played well this season for the Fighting Irish and what to expect for the rest of the season. To change the mood on the podcast we shift our focus to USC’s victory at Colorado. True freshman Kedon Slovis looked like a star leading a fourth quarter comeback for the Trojans. Clay Helton was able to get a big road victory keeping dreams of a PAC-12 South title alive. We can’t stay completely positive and do gripe about USC wasting their three star receivers.

As for the game, things started off very rocky for the Trojans with the Irish jumping out to a big halftime lead, but USC was able to make things interesting forcing Notre Dame to hang on for the win. All of the Trojans’ recent problems raised their head in this defeat, while the strong Irish defense was able to contain USC for most the night. In addition to the teams playing on the field the PAC-12 referees made sure everyone noticed them with inconsistent officiating.

The most exciting weekend of the college football season is finally here. The greatest intersectional rivalry in college football will kickoff for the 91^st time on Saturday. The USC Trojans travel to South Bend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It’s been an up and down season for the Trojans while the Fighting Irish are on a roll.

The odds from sportsbettingdime.com show that the Irish are 11 point favorites over USC this weekend, which actually looks a little light based on USC’s past performances on the road. The Trojans’ starting quarterbacks, Matt Fink and Kedon Slovis, have combined for six picks in their two road setbacks at BYU and Washington. If the Trojans forgo the air raid and plan to go run-heavy, they may want to think again; Notre Dame is surrendering just 3.7 YPC and 147 YPG this season, and the Irish have covered all three home games to date by an average of 8.8 points.

Spreads, stats and projections be damned this rivalry game is always fun and is ripe for memories that will stay with fans forever; like the recent 49-14 blowout or the famous Bush Push. The fight for the Jeweled Shillelagh will be fun.

Only one of the teams we root for was on a bye this week, however the scoreboard may disagree. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Bowling Green Falcons 52-0 this past weekend while the USC Trojans rested on the bye week. Notre Dame looked very good in the victory, and when there is such a lopsided game it’s hard to stay focused on the action on the field. We talk about Fighting Irish fans, Kyle Hamilton, Brian Kelly, and the broadcast team. Really we are just preparing for rivalry week, and our preview that will come out later in the week.

There were big games for both the Notre Dame Fighting and the USC Trojans this weekend. We start the episode checking in on Greg’s emotional state after a close Notre Dame loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Greg reminds everyone that the Fighting Irish haven’t won a big since he was nine, but is surprisingly happy with the teams showing against Georgia. However the play of some of Notre Dame’s 2019 captains is not making anyone happy. Everything was all smiles though, after a USC Trojan victory over the Utah Utes. Backup backup quarterback Matt Fink led the Trojans to the upset victory. Even though USC won things are not all roses in LA. The rest of the season is a giant question, and in the PAC-12 anything can and does happen.

A new era of USC Trojan football began over the weekend. True freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis guided the Trojans to a victory over the Stanford Cardinal. In his first start the freshman from Arizona looked great, and gave USC fans something to cheer for during the 45 to 20 come from behind blowout victory. As always, there was some nitpicking regarding Trojan coach Clay Helton, and his ability to handle all the USC quarterbacks going forward. As for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, they were on a bye. Even though Notre Dame didn’t play a game there were still concerns about quarterback Ian Book, and the mounting Fighting Irish injury list.

Its official the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans played their first games of the season over the holiday weekend, and both teams secured victories. We start this episode, right after Notre Dames’ Labor Day victory over the Louisville Cardinals. Things began shaky for the Fighting Irish, but adjustments were made and the victory was sealed. The Notre Dame secondary looked good, including the debut of freshman Kyle Hamilton, but the offense lacked something. The USC Trojans on the other hand dealt with a completely different set of problems when they faced off against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Graham Harrell’s air raid offense had mixed results, but a season ending injury to Trojan starting quarterback JT Daniels really got in the way of the offensive game plan. However, after the injury to Daniels the USC running backs looked more than capable of carrying the load. Even though it’s a new season for the Trojans, this looked like a continuation of last year’s dismal results.

When it comes to defense USC has a lot of good players on the defensive line and playing linebacker, but none of that matters because the secondary has not looked great over the summer and fall practices. We also talk about the air raid in general, the convoluted path some freshman took to get on the USC football team and of course griping about head coach Clay Helton.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish season ended in the Cotton Bowl with a loss to the Clemson Tigers. Greg is not taking the loss too hard, and staying positive on what was a encouraging season. Everything that could go wrong did for the Irish in Texas, and the Tigers took full advantage. It was another tough loss for the Irish in a big game, but there is always next year. As for the USC Trojans, it’s still a confusing offseason with new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury interviewing for head coaching jobs.
