Every year, when I am interviewing staff, invariably, the applicants talk about how they want to make a difference in the lives of our campers. I always think to myself “you have no idea how much you are going to grow and learn at Camp, as well” Take a look at what Mo has to say about her four summers with us. Her email gave me goose bumps and it is one of the reasons we do what we do.

Hi Jenn,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you to confirm I will not be able to come back next summer. I have avoided saying the words for quite some time, but as 2017 looms, I knew it couldn’t wait any longer. I thought I would just share a few paragraphs with you about how much camp has meant to me. It’s finally become real now that I’m writing it down.

Back in 2013, I remember thinking that three months outside of Ireland and away from home was too long. Now I’ve spent just under two years living in the States. That’s because TLW redefined ‘home’ to me. It’s not just a place you live or were born. It’s where you feel like you belong. It’s the people that make a place a home. And TLW has no shortage of unique people.

Each year was special. Sometimes I’m able to define them by the counselors that were there, or the role I had, or even the color war teams that year. But mostly, I’ve been able to define each year by my campers. The crazy things they did, the heart-to-hearts we shared, the stories of how their year at school went, the trips, the Girls Sing songs, camper captains, culture night dances, when they started working, when they got their little sisters, the boys they liked, the sports they hated and what they were most looking forward to that summer. The laughs, the tears, the “go to sleep girls” all down to that final camper alma mater. We were supposed to make their summer but they made mine.

I learned more about myself at TLW than I ever have in a lecture. Every year professors and my parents told me how important an internship would be to get a graduate job. Every year I wondered if I was making a mistake going back, and putting off the real world. But I didn’t. Every interviewer was more interested in my time at camp than any work related activity. It made me different. All those posts on Facebook about how being a counselor teaches you more – they were right. And I still got my big bad world job.

I’m incredibly lucky that I have four years worth of friendships from TLW. Those people are my go-to. Multiple group chats, reunions, random snapchats – camp friends really do make the best real life friends. And for those I don’t get to see or chat to during the year, I always knew that when we would stand outside the Main House again, it’d be like nothing changed, because we’d all be back in our favorite place.

Lower, middle and upper camp experiences, from specialist ropes life to Group Leader, from pre-camp to Indian summer, from coaching my heart out to winning my one and only color war as a General – I feel there is some closure in ending the way it has. I get to end my counselor journey as my campers begin to embark on theirs. I can only hope that something in those four summers that the random Irish girl said or did, will be in their minds this summer as they shape themselves as a counselor. And I’ll be incredibly proud from afar.

This email has turned out to be a lot longer than expected, but no words will ever be enough. Hopefully I’ll be back to visit, and maybe even send over a camper of my own one day, the first Irish maybe? Have to keep the ‘shower hour’ tradition alive. Haha. Thank you for absolutely everything. The guidance, the opportunity to progress in those four summers, and for making TLW feel like home.

TLW – To me, you made a difference and for that, I will forever be grateful.

Fall is a time for change, summer is fading into winter, the air is cooling and many plants become dormant. And if Fall is a time for change, November is a time to give thanks. We would like to thank the TLC Family of Camp members for its continued support in our endeavors to give back to our various camp communities.

This past summer our camp community came together and swam close to 7,000 laps, 6,872 to be exact, in one afternoon, for our annual Morry’s Camp Swim-A-Thon. Our swim-a-thon helps provide a fabulous summer camp experience for children who would not otherwise be able to attend a camp like Timber Lake West. It is your support that makes this event so successful for us. Thank you!

Our first Annual TLC Family Fall Festival was a raging success! Families from our three day camps: Hampton Country Day Camp, North Shore Day Camp, Southampton Club and Camp and our three sleep-away camps: Timber Lake Camp, Timber Lake West and Tyler Hill, along with our North Shore Day School families enjoyed a great day of rides, face painting, magic, a bar-b-que lunch, hayrides and a pick your own pumpkin patch. As part of this event we had a charitable component, in keeping with our STARFISH Values Program, the TLC Family of Camps donated $25 per family that registered for the event to one of these three charities: Autism Speaks, Crohns and Colitis or SCOPE, of the family’s choosing. We had 266 families select a charity and our TLC Foundation donated almost $7,000 on their behalf. Thank you!

It is exciting to be able to build upon our existing relationships and give back to the local community.
Every December, the TLC Family of Camps in conjunction with our Day School hosts a holiday drive. Most recently we have worked to collect a large variety of items for the East Northport Food Pantry who feed over 150 families a week. This all volunteer organization has no overhead and everything that comes into the pantry, is given back to those in families in need.

Southampton Club and Camp’s Gives Back Community Service Initiative was a summer food drive to the Human Resources of the Hamptons which operates one of the largest food distribution program on eastern Long Island with over 350 families enrolled.

For the past five summers, as part of Hampton Country Day Camp’s Helping Hands Community Service Initiative, HCDC families donated an unbelievable number of items to the East Hampton Food Pantry in their annual Food Drive. This winter HCDC is providing a temporary, off-season “home-base” to the Food Pantry which delivers food to 300-400 families weekly in the winter! Check out the Newsday article for more information!

From the TLC Family of Camps, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season and thank you for all of your support. May the warm memories of camp keep you smiling throughout the winter months.

Play It Forward is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping musicians make the world a better place. This charity was recently founded by Steve Mazza, a longtime Counselor and Division Leader at Hampton Country Day Camp.

Steve founded Play It Forward to serve as a web-based platform where musicians could sell their albums in exchange for charitable donations to non-profit organizations of their choice. Currently, musicians featured on the site are raising money for the Leukemia Research Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Feed the Children, among others.

We are excited to announce that TLC Family of Camps will be releasing an album of music written and recorded by ALL OF YOU! We are calling on all of our musically gifted parents, campers, and staff (past and present) to contribute original songs that they have written and recorded. Eligible songs may be previously recorded or can be written specifically for this project. Professional production is not a requirement.

Once we receive all of the submissions, we will compile them into a TLC Family of Camps album. Proceeds from the album will be donated to SCOPE, a nonprofit that gives the gift of summer camp to children from low-income families at ACA-accredited sleepaway camps, in celebration of its 25th Anniversary.

If you are interested in contributing a song, please e-mail Steve at steve@playitforward.com. And stay tuned – we will let you know as soon as the album is available for purchase/donation!

Timber Lake West parent, Jeff Ross, had every teenage sports fanatic’s dream job – producer for major sports networks. With over 20 years of experience at ESPN and NBC Golf Channel, Jeff had been at the helm of productions like Stanley Cup Final, Daytona 500, Olympics, and Super Bowl – with 3 Emmy® awards to boot!

But last year Jeff said goodbye to network sports – and also to great tickets for major sporting events – for which his two sons Paul and Jonny, a 3rd year West counselor and Teen 2 camper, respectively, are still mourning. Instead, Jeff opted to try his hand at a labor of love.

Jeff’s new venture is Reel Sports Productions – a production company that creates video resume reels for prospective prep school and college athletes. He believes student athletes are so much more than the sum of their academic grades, stats, and team records. That is why Jeff loves working with these young athletes to help put a face on the stats and let their individual character and performance shine through.

Reel Sports combines home videos with video Jeff shoots himself, and then has the athlete ‘host’ their own reels. The result is a small, convenient package that can be electronically blasted off to recruiters and coaches.

If you would like to check out Jeff’s videos or want to learn more about his services, click here.

And if you have a child who is interested in pursuing a career in sports broadcasting, feel free to have them reach out to Jeff for any questions or advice.
As this year’s baseball season is winding down, we thought it would be nice to take a look at Tim Elmore’s October 2014 article on lessons Derek Jeter learned from his Dad.

The sports world was consumed this summer with Derek Jeter’s farewell to the New York Yankees (and baseball fans everywhere). He got applause from every ballpark because Jeter played the game with class. He ended his career at Yankee stadium with a walk-off single that won the game. He worked hard, kept a great attitude, was a great teammate, and was very competitive—but never once, in 2,903 games of major league baseball, did he get ejected from a game. Yep, he is different.

When asked how and where he learned to play the game—he refers to his father. From his own lips, here are eight lessons we learn about leading kids from Derek Jeter’s dad:

Never let anyone outwork you.

Derek said he watched his dad work relentlessly as a substance abuse counselor. He never claimed to have the biggest talent, but he taught his kids to “work hard and never let anyone outwork you.” That way, it’s not about giftedness but work ethic.

Inspire your followers by doing what you want done.

Derek’s dad modeled the way in everything from optimism to passion to fun around the house. Derek said his proclamation that he’d play shortstop for the Yankees came from his dad who played college baseball: “I wanted to be like him.”

Don’t project on kids, but push them when it’s time.

His dad never once pushed him into baseball, but once he showed a passion for it, Jeter’s parents helped fuel it. Many an evening, Jeter and his sister Sharlee could be seen fielding grounders or taking swings in the yard with dad.

Be tough, but fair.

Like most teens, Derek had clashes with his dad, but he said later, “While he was tough, he was always fair.” Dad would explain the reasons why he’d set up the rules and boundaries in the house. It provided emotional security for the kids.

Agreements are better than rules.

Every August, Jeter was presented with a contract drawn up by his Dad on a legal pad, permitting him to play sports only if he complied with a series of expectations that included posting high grades, participating in extracurricular activities and avoiding drugs or alcohol. Derek never once violated that contract.

Explain your leadership values.

Derek remembers, “There were a lot of times when you clash with your parents, but they were pretty good at explaining things. When you’re a kid, you don’t always agree, but my parents were always good at explaining, ‘Why.’” This helps kids follow.

Err on the side of optimism.

Derek says the greatest lesson he learned from dad was to stay positive. Even in his 32-game slump in 2004, Derek put his uniform on, expecting to get a hit. He’d talk to his dad every day about the potential of that new day. He knew slumps would pass.

Constantly express appreciation.

Derek tells us, “My parents have always been supportive—daily.” So on Father’s Day, he expects that he’ll tell his Dad, ‘Thanks,’ but that is not anything unusual—Jeter thinks that is an appreciative sentiment that should be relayed more than once every 365 days.

When you lead kids well, the relationship evolves from supervisor to consultant to friend. Their relationship has matured over the years, but Derek Jeter says that he knows with any pressing issue, Dad is still one of the two people he’d turn to first. “We’re more friends than anything,” Jeter said. “I think as I’ve gotten older, you still have the father-son relationship, but we’ve become closer friends. He’s still my Dad, but more so, a friend. I’d definitely go to him first with anything.”

How could a parent or coach want anything more?

P.S. Derek Jeter just wrote a children’s book that has 10 values and life lessons. Here’s the link: http://derekjeterpublishing.com

Tim Elmore, one of our favorites is the founder and president of Growing Leaders (GrowingLeaders.com) an international non-profit organization created to develop emerging leaders. Below is an important read for parents, college students, and those who work with children and teens. Take a look.

I have a sad story to tell you. On January 17, 2014, a beautiful, talented student athlete at the University of Pennsylvania jumped off the top of a parking garage and killed herself. No one, not even her close family, saw this coming.

Her name was Madison Holleran. She was a freshman at Penn. Perhaps the saddest part is that she was the third of six Penn students to commit suicide within a period of just over a year.

Unfortunately, this is far from an isolated event in college life these days. Suicide “clusters” have become common in the last decade. This year, Appalachian State lost at least three students; Cornell experienced six suicides; Tulane lost four students just five years ago; and five NYU students leapt to their deaths in the 2004-2005 school year.

The suicide rate among 15 to 24-year-olds in the U.S. has increased moderately but steadily since 2007. A survey of college counseling centers has found that more than half their clients have severe psychological problems, an increase of 13 percent in just two years. Anxiety and depression, in that order, are now the most common mental health diagnoses among college students, according to the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State.

So, what’s going on? Is life really that bad for these students?

Three Tangible Problems in Our Culture

One key problem is that we live in a world where many kids “post” pictures of their unrealistic life on social media, and fellow students believe it. Ironically, this generation who celebrates authenticity has created one of the most inauthentic, unreal and artificial sub-cultures anywhere. We Photoshop. We exaggerate. We edit. We touch up. Viewers begin to feel like the only one struggling while everyone is doing “awesome.” Sadly, today’s kids live their lives comparing themselves to the edited, “fake” social media accounts of others. We must remind them that social media is only the tip of the iceberg, hiding the reality of most user’s lives.

Second, we’ve not taught students how to evaluate mistakes or failures. Often, we’ve worked so hard to prevent failure in their life that they are absolutely afraid of it. Meeta Kumar, who has been counseling at Penn for 16 years, has noticed this change. Getting a B can cause some students to fall apart, she said. “What you and I would call disappointments in life, to them feel like big failures.” We frequently fail to give students a grid with which to assess themselves, to learn from failure and hence, welcome it as they mature. We’ve unwittingly conditioned them to think that failure is something to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, this has cost them greatly.

Third, on top of all this, today’s student is part of a common generational lineage that’s set them up for disappointment and even depression. It was an accident, but it’s happened to millions of college students. Here’s the common narrative: student’s grandparents likely lived during the Great Depression. Their goal was to have a stable job and pay the bills. They raised their children (the parents of today’s kids) to seek a stable job and pay the bills as well—but post-World War II days were much more prosperous than Great Depression days. The Boomer generation’s expectations were met and surpassed.

As a result, Boomers today have raised their kids with higher expectations, causing kids to feel special. On top of this, kids have had more access to technology than ever before—which is where the problem lies. Thus, when a student’s high expectations confront harsh realities, emotions suffer. Feeling entitled to a special life can be problematic, especially if adults forgot to tell you:

Life can be hard and disappointing.

Life does not revolve around you.

Life must not be lived in comparison to others.

How Can We Lead Them Well?

Let me suggest some simple steps we can all take as we lead these students:

1. Put Social Media in Perspective.

Sit down with students and discuss a person you both know well. Then, look at their Facebook page or Instagram posts. Talk about how social media fails to tell the whole story. Host a conversation about the hyperbole in our world today and our human predisposition to display our best days…not our common, ordinary days.

2. Put Failure in Perspective.

Ask students to identify a failure or mistake they’ve made. Have them describe the biggest one they can remember. Then, debrief that failure, showing how it can become an instructor and how it can be overcome. Next, tell them about some of your biggest flops, failures and fumbles along the way. I’ve found students are drawn magnetically to my past failures, because they can see I have not only survived, but have gone on to accomplish some big goals.

3. Put Their Story in Perspective.

Talk about their place in history. Discuss how their generation emerged at a time of expansion, when adults may have failed to communicate that life can be hard, and that this is normal. In fact, by becoming resilient during tough times, we become our best selves. Be real with them and unveil the big picture story of past generations.

Above all, acknowledge adult failures to prepare them for adulthood, and commit to invest in them in the future.

If we want our kids to have a shot at making it in the world as 18-year-olds, without the umbilical cord of the cell phone being their go-to solution in all manner of things, they’re going to need a set of basic life skills. Based upon her observations as the former dean of freshmen at Stanford University, and the advice of parents and educators around the country, Julie Lythcot-Haims, shares some examples of practical things students will need to know how to do before they go to college — and here are the crutches that are currently hindering them from standing up on their own two feet:

1. An 18-year-old must be able to talk to strangers — faculty, deans, advisers, landlords, store clerks, human resource managers, coworkers, bank tellers, health care providers, bus drivers, mechanics—in the real world.

The crutch: We teach kids not to talk to strangers instead of teaching the more nuanced skill of how to discern the few bad strangers from the mostly good ones. Thus, kids end up not knowing how to approach strangers — respectfully and with eye contact — for the help, guidance, and direction they will need out in the world.

2. An 18-year-old must be able to find his way around a campus, the town in which her summer internship is located, or the city where he is working or studying abroad.

The crutch: We drive or accompany our children everywhere, even when a bus, their bicycle, or their own feet could get them there; thus, kids don’t know the route for getting from here to there, how to cope with transportation options and snafus, when and how to fill the car with gas, or how to make and execute transportation plans.

3. An eighteen-year-old must be able to manage his assignments, workload, and deadlines.

The crutch: We remind kids when their homework is due and when to do it— sometimes helping them do it, sometimes doing it for them; thus, kids don’t know how to prioritize tasks, manage workload, or meet deadlines, without regular reminders.

4. An 18-year-old must be able to contribute to the running of a house hold.

The crutch: We don’t ask them to help much around the house because the checklisted childhood leaves little time in the day for anything aside from academic and extracurricular work; thus, kids don’t know how to look after their own needs, respect the needs of others, or do their fair share for the good of the whole.

5. An 18-year-old must be able to handle interpersonal problems.

The crutch: We step in to solve misunderstandings and soothe hurt feelings for them; thus, kids don’t know how to cope with and resolve conflicts without our intervention.

6. An 18-year-old must be able to cope with ups and downs of courses and workloads, college- level work, competition, tough teachers, bosses, and others.

The crutch: We step in when things get hard, finish the task, extend the deadline, and talk to the adults; thus, kids don’t know that in the normal course of life things won’t always go their way, and that they’ll be okay regardless.

7. An 18-year-old must be able to earn and manage money.

The crutch: They don’t hold part-time jobs; they receive money from us for what ever they want or need; thus, kids don’t develop a sense of responsibility for completing job tasks, accountability to a boss who doesn’t inherently love them, or an appreciation for the cost of things and how to manage money.

8. An 18-year-old must be able to take risks.

The crutch: We’ve laid out their entire path for them and have avoided all pitfalls or prevented all stumbles for them; thus, kids don’t develop the wise understanding that success comes only after trying and failing and trying again (a.k.a. “grit”) or the thick skin (a.k.a. “resilience”) that comes from coping when things have gone wrong.

Remember: our kids must be able to do all of these things without resorting to calling a parent on the phone. If they’re calling us to ask how, they do not have the life skill.

Dr. Jason Frischer is the director of the Peña Colorectal Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His daughter Gabrielle is a Sophomore at Timber Lake Camp and his son Cal will be participating in his first Rookie Day this summer.

Over Thanksgiving, Jason led a medical mission to the Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, Tanzania. The surgical team was sponsored by the non-profit organization, Mending Kids. The team volunteered their services to provide 15 children suffering from congenital colorectal malformations with life-changing surgeries and trained the local surgeon, Sister Massenga, a nun, to perform these surgeries, in the future. As a result, many of these children who had previously been shunned and shamed for their conditions are now attending school for the first time.

Mending Kids provides free surgeries to children across the world and empowers local medical communities through training and support. To that end, Jason and his team will be returning to Tanzania again next year to train and mend more kids.

Jason’s humanitarian work is closely aligned with the mission of the TLC Family of Camps Foundation, a not-for profit, that is dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of children throughout the world. The Foundation is proud to support Jason’s upcoming mission to Tanzania with a $2,500 donation.

If you are interested in learning more about Mending Kids or donating to Jason’s mission, please visit www.mendingkids.org. Donations can be directed to Tanzania/Dr. Frischer.

Family Connect regularly features new or unique ideas, businesses, ventures, philanthropic or other endeavors that our camp families are involved in. Camp parents send us their submissions. Items are selected for either a feature article or for our directory of businesses, services and events. With over 3000 camp families, our hope is that finding out about what’s happening in our greater camp community will create synergies and benefits beyond far beyond the already tremendous benefits your children get from a summer experience at camp.

Bonnie Schwartz has sent two sons through Timber Lake Camp and still remains connected through her youngest, Marc, who was a counselor there, this past summer. Bonnie, who has always had an artistic flair and uses her “artistic license” to create art from license plates. Most think of a license plate as just a piece of metal but it is so much more – it is the thumbprint of the automobile, it is Americana – and each one is unique.

Each picture that she creates has its own history, and tells its own story. She has created customized logos of both prominent celebrities, sports teams, university mascots, comic book heroes, automotive motifs and most recently has been able to truly capture any portrait. Camp logos have been ordered for a variety of camp owners, with her first presented to, you guessed it; Timber Lake Camp Director and Timber Lake Family of Camps Executive Director, Jay Jacobs. You will be amazed at what Bonnie can create with license plates.

For a very different type of gift, and an extraordinary piece of art, check out her web site at: http://artisticlicenseinc.com and view an additional link at: http://artisticlicenseinc.com/custom/.

Bonnie has something for everyone; even our directors. Jenn Despagna and Justin Mayer. Jenn went to Michigan and Justin went to Indiana.

Bonnie’s work is more than simply a conversation piece. Like any great piece of art, it defines the room that is graces.
