Hualien Town
Hualien is a small town which is situated at the East coast of Taiwan\. It consists of many shoplots and night markets. If you want to get rid of city hectic life, Hualien is your right choice as the pace in Hualien is slow.You hardly find shopping malls but old shops along the roadside.I like the most about Taiwan so far is its friendly people, pensions and local food.

I am on top of the world!

However, there are more challenges yet to come. I must be ready with all the challenges and obstacles which I will encounter in future. However, I won't be alone this time, my lovely darling will be with me and both of us will face all the challenges in future together. Look at the positive side, it might not be a bad thing to accept all the challenges in life. We can't have everything we want. We can't own this world. As long as we are contented in our life with the decision made and whatever the possibilities that will turn out to be, we must be ready to take it.

If you want a change, you must not resist changes. We must be daring or else we stay where we are forever.

I hope that things will continue to go on my way. I hope that we will be reaching up to the star soon.

Smart is not enough in this globalisation and competitive world, we must be street-smart.

Thanks to God for saving our lives! We are really blessed. Now, I know how meaningful and precious life is.

I feel fortunate and thankful to God that I am still alive and I am still here writing my blog. I couldn't predict what the outcome is if I was not quick and calm enough.We both could have sustained serious cuts or injuries or even worse.

The story goes this way:

My colleague, E**** and I had a briefing on Cambridge English at Sunway College in Kuching yesterday. The course ended around 430pm. We decided to go work around 5.50am early in the morning the following day (as it takes about 1 and a half hour to reach Sematan). I drive as usual. We reached Sematan area about 7 am, however, it is still quite a distance to reach my school (approximately 10 minutes).

We were tailing a lorry when we were about to reach Kampung Sebako. The road is straight and it's clear. Therefore, I tried to overtake the lorry by giving a signal. When I was about to overtake the lorry which I think my car speed at that time was about 60-70km/h, the lorry skidded from its lane. We were side by side. I was panic and I immediately sounded my car horn. The lorry driver did not aware (or most probably he is DEAF!) and he tried to overtake the car in front as well (which at that time, i had almost successfully overtaken him )When he skidded from the lane which my car was heading, I sounded the horn continuously. I even tried to avoid the lorry till I almost reached the roadside! The traumatic moment was when I couldn't avoid him anymore as I was almost heading to the bridge (as he "pushed" me to the other side of the road till the bridge). Instead of hitting and knocking on the bridge (which i think it would give a huge impact), I turned my sterling to the left side. All of the sudden, I heard a big "bang" from the back of my car! My car was shaking terribly(imagine I was driving VIOS, if i drove Kenari, i think my car would overturn) and I hold my sterling tightly as I felt that the sterling was shaking tremendously as well!My colleague was screaming loudly in the car and we thought we were just done...

After we recovered from our consciousness, we thought If I did not hold the sterling tightly or if i drove with one hand, i guess both of us could have suffered serious injuries or...things could have gone even worse. But I told myself that I must not head to the bridge,if I did, my car could have been seriously damaged and both of us could have suffered serious injuries or our car could have been thrown out from the bridge inside the river!Gosh....couldn't imagine...

I stopped my car after that. We were both traumatized and couldn't help to recall what had happened. We both came out from the car and we scolded the driver for being so reckless! If he could have been awaken (i think he was fallen asleep) after i sounded my first long horn, he could have slowed
down or followed his lane, he wouldn't knock on my car. He was totally unconscious at that moment!

Lastly, we resorted the matter when his boss arrived by promising to pay for my car repair. My colleague told me her legs were still aching due to traumatize. My hands were both shaking. We both sat in the car for quite some time before continue our journey to the school.

We had a bad experience and we were both shocked as things happened in a blink of our eyes. However, I do not mind about the damage of my car, I feel blissful that we are still alive and we are still able to teach and see the students in the class. I feel thankful that I am still alive and took dinner with my housemate this evening.

It is true when the saying goes, Better be safe than sorry. I drive carefully but other people drive carelessly. Please, please be considerate, be awake and be conscious when you are driving!You might not be the victim but somebody might because of your careless driving!Think of others on the road!You would feel regret for your whole life if something bad happens, just because of YOU!

Inspire not Command.

Have Confidence and Belief.

If a leader has an iron will and tremendous self belief, he can can inspire others very powerfully to pursue the ideal.

Be willing to admit Mistakes.

A good leader needs the strength to ignore criticism. However, many leaders make the mistake of thinking this means that they can never admit they are wrong. Actually, this stubbornness is usually the result of their own ego. They don’t want to admit their mistakes because they feel this would make them look stupid (oh ya,this is very ~~true~~ rude) However, to persist with the wrong strategy, just to try and prove yourself correct, is the worst thing a leader can do. A leader should ignore his ego and change course if events prove different to expectations. People appreciate a leader who can admit his mistakes, but if you keep making mistakes all the time people will lose faith in your competence.

Delegate Where Appropriate.

A good leader cannot do the jobs of several people. A leader who tries to control absolutely everything, will get bogged down in minor details. It also displays a lack of confidence in others. People need to feel valued and given responsibility. A good leader needs to be able to delegate to the right people and intervene only at critical moments.

Learn From Others.

A good leader should be constantly learning and improving. We should learn from our mistakes, but also we should read the counsel of experts. It is a mistake to feel that all we need is a strong will. Good Leadership requires wisdom and a humility to learn. A leader who thinks he knows everything, is destined to get into trouble. Leadership and learning are synonymous.

Sacrifice.

“Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men — the other 999 follow women.” -Groucho Marx
To be a real leader, at times, we need to sacrifice our personal comforts and desires. A leader needs to be able and willing to put the interests of his people first. If we are primarily concerned with our own affairs, it is not possible to be a true and powerful leader.

Emphasize good qualities in others.

The best way to gain the loyalty and support of others is to appreciate their efforts. This should be sincere and not just at times when things are going well. A good leader will instinctively seek to draw out the good qualities of other people. This is much more effective than trying to point out and correct their weaknesses. A leader will also take time to offer gratitude for the efforts of others. This is particularly important at times when things are not going as planned; it is at times like this that people need appreciation most.

Detached from Criticism.

A good leader is not autocratic, but, at the same time he needs to have the strength to pursue strategies, even if temporarily unpopular. A good leader should be able to listen to criticism without getting emotionally upset.

Humility.

It is a mistake to feel that you are always right. Any display of ego creates feelings of inferiority and superiority. In the long run, this undermines your effectiveness as a leader. If you are proved right, don’t spend time reminding people it was your idea. A good leader, is concerned with the well being of his project / group, and not with his personal standing. Also, humility does not mean false modesty, it means working quietly without demanding recognition and praise; this quality is quite rare amongst leaders.

Be prepared to Follow.

To learn the art of leadership, we also need to learn the art of following others. If we can listen to others, people will respond in similar fashion and will be willing to follow our advice. We cannot expect to always have others be at our beck and call. If we demand others always follow us, people will not be attracted to our style of leadership.

Spending a weekend in Singapore

I spent a 4-day trip in Singapore as I had something to settle in Singapore. I was so glad that I managed to catch up with my old primary schoolmate from Perth whom happened to travel to Singapore as well.

My friend teased me that I travel to Singapore so frequently which she described that "I travel to Singapore by bus". Haha. Yea, I think I should be given VIP seats from Tiger airways. Haha.

Now, I am back.It sounds awesome to fly frequently but it's not in fact as I gonna miss my beloved hubby in Singapore.

A nightmare on Elm Street is a horror movie, a thriller but integrates with comedy elements which show in the the lines of Freddy Kruger and Nancy.Your heart beat rate increases when you are watching the movie as you wouldn't know what would happen next.It keeps you in suspense.

Situation 1:

When Nancy falls asleep in class, she sees Freddy Kruger with scissors hands...Fred:I told you not to sleep in the class..."

When Nancy falls asleep(that she did not sleep for days) which she plans to kill Fred, she says: F*** you!" Fred says: Wooo, It's too fast for me!"

The movie ends with the song "dreams" which sounds funny.

"Critical Thinking" Is Often Just a Dumb Slogan -by Bruce Deitrick Price

The goal of education has always been to achieve critical thinking.

Needless to say, this involves a two-step process: first, students learn a great deal about a topic, whether in history, science or art; then they learn to arrange the information in new ways, to set one fact against another, to find new insights among this knowledge.

Not anymore. Today's educators are in a hurry; they don't bother with the first step. They jump directly to step two. In this scenario, students who know nothing are expected to talk intelligently about it. What absurdity.

Having just heard about X, can you discuss X? For example, the Ottoman Empire, its rise and fall? If you are like me, you know nothing about this complex subject. We will seem completely goofy if we discuss it. Talk about plunging self-esteem. Try chatting about the Ottoman Empire when you know nothing about it.

Far from empowering our students, this upside-down approach just makes them feel foolish and inadequate.

Today's educators have many dogmas, perhaps the chief of which is that students need not memorize (that is, know) anything. Everyone must have an empty head. But that's not bad enough. Then the educators want to add charade on top of ignorance. Students are suppose to engage in deep and meaningful thinking about all the things they don't know.

My impression is that our educators disdain basics and academics equally. All facts are a nuisance; any knowledge is undesirable. But this approach, even in ed circles, might seem somewhat difficult to defend. So they airbrush on a whole layer of lies and distractions. They commence the cover-up...Look, parents, at all the critical thinking! The creative thinking! Your children are so much more advanced now, so much more liberated. Without all that silly knowledge stuff, today's students can soar! They can see new things, things that no one saw before, because their vision is not obscured by facts.

Sure, I'm being a little satiric. I know you want to ask, What's the point? Because you and I know that our educators are immune to satire. These are people who tell ignorant students that a class will now engage in critical thinking, and then they stand the there and pretend that it is happening. Shazam!

It's probably futile but I want to sketch (if only for parents and children) what should be standard operating procedure. Starting in the first grade, students learn the basics in each subject. This foundation is added to in the second grade, the third-grade, the fourth grade, and the fifth grade. As children enter middle school, more reflection is appropriate. Meanwhile, more facts are learned. At this point we can honestly say that children are engaged in some degree of critical thinking.

The goal, as they move closer to college, is to engage in more and more critical thinking. Students will know what they're doing. If they are genuinely engaged in critical thinking, they will be proud of themselves, they will want to do more. But if the so-called critical thinking is a game whereby schools place camouflage over the ignorance of the student body, the students will know this and they will be ashamed.

BOULDER (Colorado) - NASA has unveiled the first images from a new satellite designed to predict disruptive solar storms, and scientists say they're already learning new things.
Researchers showed off brightly coloured images and short movie clips of the sun from the Solar Dynamics Observatory in a webcast on Wednesday.
The satellite was launched Feb 11. Dean Pesnell, the chief scientist, says it already has disproved at least one theory, but he didn't give any details.

Oftentimes, people are afraid of changes; afraid of new challenges and afraid of new ideas. We tend to think, analyze and consider every possibility (either good or bad) which we are going to face. We dare not make big decisions as we are afraid of failures; we are afraid of criticisms and we are afraid of being losers in the game. New ideas usually receive criticisms. We hear more nega-thoughts (taken from who moved my secret from Jay Gerard) than posi-thoughts.Their judgment of your problem and idea might not be as right as your judgment. You know yourself the best, you know yourself well and you have been living with yourself for years;therefore, you look , perceive things in wider aspect;wider angle and in different views. Therefore, good to listen to criticisms and opinions but those are only guidelines for your decision-making.It is not necessarily for you to accept.

Most of us do not know what we want in life or perhaps we have not thought of this question before or maybe we just "live a day then count a day"(in mandarin). It is not wrong to live such way. Everyone of us has different ways of living and everyone of us has some sorts of purpose of living.But, do we know why do we live on earth? What is the purpose of living? To eat? To enjoy? We understand that we come to this world is not to enjoy. We have so many things to do - most of the time, to better our life and to make ends meet. Back to the question, since we have done so many things with one purpose - to have a better life - Do we do it blindly without any goals and objectives? or we do because we are asked to or we have no choice? Yes, sometimes, we have no choice. We do things just to satisfy the other party. Don't you think that is tiring?If we are given a chance to showcase ourselves, what would you do?Would you stay or would you move on to try?

We must know what we want in life. That's important. However, the most important thing is we must be given a chance. Chance or opportunity is a leading path for a person to further develop what they want in life (my new quote). If a person is not given a chance, I believe no matter how much he / she tries to achieve in his / her, he / she would end no way.

Whatever you do, there is always a starting and there is always an ending (my new quote)

Therefore, I recommend this book - Who moved my secret by Jay Gerard to you. Hope you enjoy the book. I am now reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Convey which I have come across weeks ago but have not had a chance to read.

Who says the year of Tiger is not good for Marriage?

I can't believe that people nowadays are still very superstitious over such thing.People tend to overgeneralise what "feng sui" masters have told us.Once the news - "Is the year of Tiger good for Marriage?" was out as headline in newspaper, people tend to talk about this and make a lot of comments. Some people believe it blindly without thinking that this is only a reference/guideline for couples.It does not mean that this applies to every couple.If that so, I guess that the restaurants around the world will be closing down because of such beliefs.

However, surprisingly, most of the restaurants are fully reserved for wedding receptions.Couples tend to be extra-careful when choosing the dates as peopple might ask you,"you guys are getting married?Tiger year is not good for Marriage ler..." What would you feel if someone tells you such thing instead of expecting them to say ,"Hey, congratulations!"

As far as I know, a few dates were chosen and most restaurants were fully booked till the end of this year.and they are FAST!Perhaps, "feng sui" masters are right, no one says you should not marry this year but you must choose appropriate dates.

CONGRATULATIONS to those couples who are going to marry this year (2010) and successfully made reservation for your favourite restaurants!

Tiger is a fierce and untamed animal. We never associate tigers as "cute" or "lovable". Therefore, people are afraid of tigers. However, tigers have its good characteristics. If we look at the other perspective, tigers are fierce but "fierce" can be also related to "firmness"-Firmness of doing things. Sometimes, we have to be firm if we want to achieve a goal especially a leader who is firm to his surbodinates.

Tigers are strong animals. Strong - powerful in that sense. Who does not want to be powerful? Imagine how fast can a tiger run? it leaps!

Any brands or company uses the symbol of "tiger" as their logo?

Oh ya!I always take this....to Singapore!
