Born to first-generation Americans in Bay City, Michigan, David Kulczyk (pronounced "coal-check") is a Sacramento-based crime historian, freelance writer and award-winning author of short fiction. He is the author of Forgotten Sacramento Murders: 1940-1976 (2018); California's Deadliest Women: Dangerous Dames and Murderous Moms (2016); California Fruits, Flakes and Nuts: True Tales of California Crazies, Crackpots and Creeps (2013); Death in California: The Bizarre, Freakish, and Just Curious Ways People Die in the Golden State (2009); and California Justice: Shootouts, Lynchings and Assassinations in the Golden State (2007). His freelance work has appeared in the SF Guardian, the East Bay Express, the Seattle Times, Pop Culture Press, Strange Magazine, and the Sacramento News and Review.

Elizabeth Varadan is a former teacher who writes children’s fiction, poetry, and adult mysteries. She is a fan of both Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allan Poe. (“The Raven” is one of her favorite poems.) Her previous stories and flash fiction have appeared in several literary magazines. Imogene and the Case of the Missing Pearls, a middle grade mystery featuring Sherlock Holmes, was published in 2015 by MX Publishing. Her short story, “Kidnapped” was included in the 2016 Sherlock Holmes-related story collection, Beyond Watson, by Belanger Books, and in 2018, Belanger Books published her children’s book Carnival of the Animals. A new story, “What the Raven Knew,” involving both Poe and Holmes, will be included in a forthcoming story collection by Belanger Books.

Deadly Vintage, released in November 2019 by Belanger Books, is her first cozy mystery for adults and is set in Braga, Portugal, a city she and her husband travel to frequently.

He serves on the faculty of American River College in Sacramento and lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada with his family.

In her book Stutterer Interrupted: The Comedian Who Almost Didn’t Happen, Nina G challenges the status quo of how people who stutter are perceived onstage and off. She substitutes the negative emotions of shame, denial and isolation with pride, acceptance, and community.

As a child Nina had a dream of becoming a comedian, but never thought she’d be able to go on stage and make people laugh. Her story is about how stuttering caused her to first abandon her dreams, then to embark on a journey culminating in a career as one of the few stuttering stand-up comedians working today. Nina has learned that the issues that impact people with disabilities impact everyone. She hopes her book will not only entertain, but inform those who don’t understand the experience of people who stutter, and help those that do.

On stage she encounters the occasional heckler, but offstage she is often confronted with people's comments on her stuttering. Listeners often complete her sentences, inquiring, "Did you forget your name?" and giving unwanted advice like, "Slow down and breathe" (as if she never thought about slowing down and breathing in her over thirty years of stuttering!). Nina's brand of comedy reflects the experience of many people with disabilities: the problem isn't in the person but in a society that isn't always accessible or inclusive.

Nina G shares her book, experiences and humor at Time Tested Books. The event is co-sponsored by the Invisible Disabilities Comedy Show. Nina will be joined by Aliada and Drew Kimzey for an interview about Stutterer Interrupted.

She tours the country as a conference keynote speaker including at a TEDx talk at San Jose State University. She has a doctorate in psychology and teaches at a Bay Area Community College. Stutterer Interrupted is her second book.

In the early 1900s, Sacramento became a battleground in a statewide struggle. On one side were Progressive political reformers and suffragettes. Opposing them were bars, dance halls, brothels and powerful business interests. Caught in the middle was the city’s West End, a place where Grant “Skewball” Cross hosted jazz dances that often attracted police attention and Charmion performed her infamous trapeze striptease act before becoming a movie star. It was home to the “Queen of the Sacramento Tenderloin,” Cherry de Saint Maurice, who met her untimely end at the peak of her success, and Ancil Hoffman, who ingeniously got around the city’s dancing laws by renting riverboats for his soirées. In Wicked Sacramento historian William Burg shares these and many more long-hidden stories of criminals and crusaders from Sacramento’s past.

William Burg, a Sacramento resident since 1993, is a California historian whose work focuses on Sacramento history, including seven books and approximately one hundred articles about the city’s history. He holds a Master of Arts degree in public history from Sacramento State University. Burg is currently president of Preservation Sacramento and Sacramento Heritage Inc. and vice-president of Sacramento Historical Society. He was born in Skokie, Illinois, and spent his childhood in Sacramento’s suburbs, visiting Sacramento regularly and deciding to live there when he grew up.

This book contains over 20 compelling tales of serial killers, deadly women, conmen, masters of escape, and unsolved mysteries.

William Thoreson, a murderous millionaire, who hid the nation’s largest private armory in his Pacific Heights mansion, Isabella Martin, the murderous “queen of grudges” who tried to poison an entire town, or Ethan McNabb and Lloyd Sampsell, the “Yacht Bandits,” who used a luxurious sloop as a getaway vehicle for their bank robberies. Most of these unusual cases are largely unknown and have never appeared in book form. Included are cases that are still mysteries today, such as the Zodiac killer, with a new analysis and an unusual new possibility.

Paul Drexler has been writing about San Francisco crime since 1984. He worked for years with the late Kevin Mullen, retired Deputy Chief of the San Francisco Police Department. Paul designed and co-produced SFPD Homicide, the interactive award-winning true crime game that has been used to teach police procedures. His column, “Notorious Crooks,” appeared regularly in the Sunday San Francisco Examiner. He has taught at San Francisco State, and appeared on the Discovery ID Network show Deadly Women as an expert on San Francisco murderesses, and on Spike TV as an expert on the Zodiac Killer. Paul also directs Crooks Tours of San Francisco, which offers walking crime tours of Chinatown and the Barbary Coast. In July 2017 Paul received the Oscar Lewis Award from the San Francisco History Association for his writing on San Francisco.

A special event with New England creatives, poet Bob Clawson, artist Betsyann Duval, and vocalist Kane Clawson at Time Tested Books in Sacramento. A brief open mic period will follow the featured performers. Hosted by Leonard Germinara and Frank Graham.

Bob Clawson is a writer, a fisherman, a cook. His writing has great range: he’s been published in both The Southern Review and Yankee, in the Christian Science Monitor and The Lancet (the weekly British medical journal). He’s also been published in Beloit Poetry Journal and Poet Lore, among others. Bob's chapbook, Nightbreak, published in 1997, achieved two additional press runs. He currently offers a collection of 15 poems on a professionally produced CD. His formal education includes a two-room schoolhouse, Kenyon College, Harvard, and Yale. He has visited 32 of the United States, and has been abroad to France, The British Isles, Italy, Greece, Mexico, and to several island nations such as Jamaica, Cuba, and Nantucket.

Betsyann Duval has received awards in national exhibitions from noted jurors including a First Prize, Painting from Lisa Dennison, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Soloman R. Guggenheim Museum, a Director's Prize from Maxwell Anderson, Director, Whitney Museum of American Art, and a Print Prize from Peter Rathbone, VP and Director of the American Paintings and Sculpture, Sotheby's. Her work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S and Europe, and is included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Archives of Women Artists.

Kane Clawson is a versatile vocalist who features with the bands WildCat Creek, Country Jam, and the a cappella improv group Menage A Voix. She’ll be singing songs by Irish poets: W.B.Yeats’ Down by the Salley Gardens; Joseph Campbell’s My Lagan Love; and A Stor Mo Chroi, by Brian O' Higgins, the Irish Patriot known as Brian Na Banban. Three trips to Ireland (while still in her twenties) triggered Kane’s love of Irish traditional music, which she enriched while singing in southwestern North Carolina, in Newfoundland, and in northwestern Connecticut, where she currently lives and performs. She has sung just once in California, at a farmer’s market in Point Reyes Station.

At the southern end of the Japanese archipelago lies Okinawa, host to a vast complex of U.S. military bases. A legacy of World War II, these bases have been a fraught issue for decades—with tensions exacerbated by the often volatile relationship between islanders and the military, especially after the brutal rape of a 12-year-old girl by three servicemen in 1995.

But the situation is more complex than it seems. In Night in the American Village, Akemi Johnson takes readers deep into the “border towns” surrounding the bases—a world where cultural and political fault lines compel individuals, both Japanese and American, to continually renegotiate their own identities. Focusing on the women there, she follows the complex fallout of the murder of an Okinawan woman by an ex-marine in 2016 and speaks to protesters, to women who date and marry American men and groups that help them when problems arise, and to Okinawans whose family members survived World War II.

Thought-provoking and timely, Night in the American Village is a vivid look at the enduring wounds of U.S.-Japanese history and the cultural and sexual politics of the American military empire.

AKEMI JOHNSON is a former Fulbright scholar in Okinawa and has written about the island for The Nation, Travel + Leisure, Explore Parts Unknown, and other publications. She has also contributed to NPR’s "All Things Considered" and "Code Switch." A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and Brown University, she lives in Sacramento.

NAOMI J. WILLIAMS is the author of Landfalls (2015), long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Award. Her short fiction has appeared in journals such as Zoetrope: All-Story, A Public Space, The Southern Review, and others. A five-time Pushcart Prize nominee and one-time winner, Naomi has an MA in Creative Writing from UC Davis. Naomi was born in Japan and spoke no English until she was six years old.

Made in the Shade captures the story of how we began our love affair with trees and the ongoing story of our world-renowned urban forest. Drawing on years of research and interviews with our early advocates for urban forestry, the filmmakers document the rise of an innovative partnership that led to the planting of over half a million trees in this region through our Sacramento Shade program.

The 49-minute film chronicles Sacramento’s path to becoming the City of Trees, highlighting the public vote to close the Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station in 1989, the energy deficit that it caused, and how then-SMUD general manager S. David Freeman championed a grassroots campaign to expand the city’s tree canopy as a means to reduce energy consumption, lessen heat retention in neighborhoods, and break the city’s reliance on the energy plant.

In Wounds of War, award-winning journalist Suzanne Gordon gives voice to veterans and VA caregivers. . . .

U.S. intervention abroad and military service at home has left 9 million Americans heavily dependent on the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Their “wounds of war” are treated by the largest hospital system in the country—one that has come under fire from critics in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in the nation’s media. The resulting public debate about the future of veterans’ health care has pitted VHA patients and their care-givers against federal policy-makers who believe that former military personnel would be better served by private sector providers.
This high stakes controversy led Suzanne Gordon, an award-winning journalist and author, to seek insight from veterans and their families, VHA staff and administrators, veterans’ organizations, and proponents of privatization. Gordon spent five years closely observing how the VHA cares for patients suffering from complex service-related injuries, both physical and mental.

Gordon describes how the VHA—tasked with a challenging patient population—does a better job than private sector institutions offering primary and geriatric care, mental health and home care services, and support for patients nearing the end of life. The VHA, Gordon argues, is an integrated health care system worthy of wider emulation, rather than piecemeal dismantling for the benefit of private contractors. In the unusual culture of solidarity between patients and providers fostered by the VHA, the author finds a working model for higher quality health care for all Americans that is not based on “for-profit” medicine.

What will the marijuana industry look like as legalization spreads? Will corporations sweep in and create "Big Marijuana," flooding the market with mass-produced weed? Or will marijuana agriculture stay true to its roots in family farming, and reflect a sustainable, local, and artisanal ethic? In Craft Weed, Ryan Stoa argues that the future of the marijuana industry should be powered by small farms—that its model should be more craft beer than Anheuser-Busch.

To make his case for craft weed, Stoa interviews veteran and novice marijuana growers, politicians, activists, and investors. He provides a history of marijuana farming and its post-hippie resurgence in the United States. He reports on the amazing adaptability of the cannabis plant and its genetic gifts, the legalization movement, regulatory efforts, the tradeoffs of indoor versus outdoor farms, and the environmental impacts of marijuana agriculture. To protect and promote small farmers and their communities, Stoa proposes a Marijuana Appellation system, modeled after the wine industry, which would provide a certified designation of origin to local crops. A sustainable, local, and artisanal farming model is not an inevitable future for the marijuana industry, but Craft Weed makes clear that marijuana legalization has the potential to revitalize rural communities and the American family farm.
