I just returned from a drive down to Georgia with my mom and my older sister. I love to refer to her as “older” as she insists on continuing to refer to me as “baby sister”.

Mom got to visit with her sisters and two remaining brothers, reminiscing and sharing all the family news. Catching up on grandchildren’s birthdays and achievements, recent weddings and new baby arrivals – two days probably wasn’t enough time to cover the activities of such a big family but we did a pretty thorough job!

As any well run family reunion should go – there was good company, good conversation, too much good food, lots of hugs and a few tears. That’s family. That’s a party.

And Yet Another Reason to Celebrate

I must admit that “whoever” is in charge of declaring “holidays” on our calendar is going overboard. Today is National Sourest Day. Obviously the opposite of Sweetest Day which was on the 15th. How would one throw a Sour Day party? Plan to send out invitations – and then not? Choose party favors and then keep them for yourself? Invite people over and then not be home? Strange concept.

It’s also St. Crispin Day, an obscure day which is most notably remembered in a speech in Shakespeare’s Henry V. And Pablo Picasso would have been 126 today!

Whatever the occasion – a birthday, a baby, your favorite artist – there’s always a reason to celebrate!

An International Party

Today is United Nations Day. What is that? I had to look it up and here is what Wikipedia says:

“The anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on 24 October 1945 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. It has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the Organization. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that Member States observe it as a public holiday”.

I can’t say that I attended any meetings or discussions on the merits of the organization but Happy Birthday anyway! Ah.. any personalized party favors being passed out at these meetings?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always marked the monthly 25th by noting how many months until Christmas. Jan 25 is announced with “there’s only 11 more months”. Today is Oct 24 – only “2 more months until Christmas Eve”! Time to start implementing all those great ideas for holiday party favors!

Honoring Rodents

OK.. what is that about? Today is National Mole Day. I didn’t know that the little critters needed a special day. And just how should I go about celebrating? Do they eat cake? Maybe pizza? I know they like to tear through my gardening efforts – maybe I’ll set out a dish of tulip bulbs and see what happens. Now that would be unique party favors!

Americans certainly have a penchant for declaring “special days” for just about anything. And that’s probably not a bad thing – although I tend to think our legislators have better things to do with their time.

Lots of people are celebrating birthdays and babies and weddings all around me. A few are honoring loved ones who have died. Bright decorations and party favors round out one celebration. The other just needs hugs and “I love you’s”.

October 20th, officially celebrating the sweetest people in your life. Not that we really need an official day to say “I love you” to those most precious to us!

A relatively new “holiday”, it is probably not one that is in need of party favors but little tokens of love are always appreciated. A hug and an “I love you” are my favorites. Too much chocolate will make my blood sugar go crazy and those beautiful roses always wilt and make me sad.

If we need an official “Sweetest Day” to give us cause to make another day a special occasion – than so be it! We have way too many ways to get down about current circumstances

More Girly Things to Celebrate

Yesterday was World Menopause Day and today is National Mammogram Day! There seems to be a theme developing here. Grab your girlfriends (well, maybe not grab) and make appointments for your yearly mammo-squeeze. May not be fun or glamorous but it’s a good idea. Afterwards you can all go out to lunch and celebrate being women. This may not be an appropriate time to have party favors – but, then again, why not? Something girly like loose tea tins or lip balms could be fun!

And speaking of girls – another baby girl has arrived to bring joy to her parents and grandparents alike! Congratulations Erin and Andy! Welcome Miss Maya!

Celebrating Heat Waves!

Who in their right mind would celebrate a heat wave? Ha, ha!! I’m rather fond of the phrase “I’m having my own personal summer right now – don’t bug me!”. I noticed on my daily holiday calendar that it is World Menopause Day!! That’s the heat wave I’m referring to. Can you imagine throwing a party for that? One party favor suggestion might be candy tins filled with hormone therapy tablets instead of candy. Maybe greeting cards could read “so sorry you are going through this – hopefully it will be over real sooon!!”.

It’s my personal season of life, but my poor husband has to suffer along with me. He’ll probably throw a huge celebration when I finally come through this, decorations and party favors included!

It is also “Alaska Day”, whatever that means. Now that sounds like a very enjoyable destination for all my sister menopausalites!! Oh.. we could order up some personalized favors, like flavored lip balms to keep our lips from chapping on the trip! Happy Thursday!!

Any Day Can Be a Party Day

Yahoo! It is finally raining in drought weary East Tennessee! That rain dance must have worked :). Can you just see a party with the theme of “let’s make it rain!”? Now that would be a very unique party. Everyone comes dressed in rain gear and the host could pass out party favors with ducks and umbrellas on them (as found in the baby shower party favor section).

And, if the party is a success and it starts to rain again, send them some little plantable paper party favors that can be tucked into pots and placed out in that lovely rain! Oh, the ideas just keep coming!

Today is National Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day. Hmm.. What kind of party favor would that call for? It is also UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty Day. Seriously, that would be a reason to celebrate. Happy Wednesday!

In the continuing search to find new and unique party favors and ideas, I came across a fun idea – pinatas for every kind of occasion imaginable! What does that have to do with party favors? It’s just another way to add to the final touches of party planning. I’ve taken the time to pick out invitations, plan an exciting menu, and selected some party favors that go along with the overall theme. Why not have a crazy activity like a pinata to stir up some laughter! Although I have to admit that pinatas that look like the bride and groom are a little odd. Can you imagine a bridal shower where the participants are already taking shots at each other? Anyway, I thought it would be a fun resource to offer on my new party favor website!! Check it out!

Oh, BTW.. Happy National Boss Day! They should be happy – they’re bossing everyone else around!

Ah, the much awaited Friday is here! That’s a good reason to be in a celebratory mood. What kind of parties are we attending this weekend? Of course, for those who work in the retail field, the work week doesn’t end with Friday. Retail goes on around the clock, Monday through Sunday. Some large chains are even open 24/7. It’s a strange feeling when it seems everybody else is running around on the weekend, having fun, and I’m at work, working..

Can you tell I’ve spent too many years in the retail field? Don’t get me wrong – it can be a lot of fun. Interesting people to work with and to assist. The changing seasons bring in lots of new products for seasonal parties and decorating and these can fun to unpack and ooh and ahh over.

But working in retail creates certain difficulties when planning a birthday party or baby shower. Setting a date that I’m off at the same time as the majority of my guests can be an issue. Planning ahead is a must – no spur of the moment – is essential!

Anyway.. today is the traditional Columbus Day date. What year was it when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue? Happy Friday!
