First of all, it does not rely on LiDAR, which is already impressive and better than all other losers out there. Then, the concept of VLA is my exact understanding of what FSD 14.3 would be. And I believe Nvidia is doing really well at training general-purpose, small-sized VLMs. So, I don’t think it is very obvious who will train the better VLM for driving between Nvidia and Tesla. I’d guess Tesla, but you just can’t be so sure because it is not trivial to predict this part. Elon and Ashok surely both actively engaged with this news, and basically confirmed that Nvidia is doing exactly the same thing that Tesla is doing, with the only difference being how far they have gone along this technical path. I understand that going from 99% to 100% is hard, but first of all, Tesla isn’t at 100% yet, and second of all, the fact that Nvidia could reach near 99% without any fleet kind of proved that it is no longer critical to have large-scale fleet data for training and evaluation.

Tesla’s AI5 and AI6 are incredibly important for Tesla’s future, which will likely be built on the back of very high-volume products like Optimus and the Cybercab.

Musk sets high expectations

Musk confirmed this week that Tesla had just completed a design review for AI5, which will initially be manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan before production ramps in Arizona. As per Musk, consolidating Tesla’s chip design efforts into one architecture has allowed the company to focus its silicon talent on delivering a single high-performance platform.

“Just had a great design review today with the Tesla AI5 chip design team! This is going to be an epic chip. And AI6 to follow has a shot at being the best (by) AI chip by far. Switching from doing 2 chip architectures to 1 means all our silicon talent is focused on making 1 incredible chip. No-brainer in retrospect,” Musk wrote in his post.

In a follow-up post, the CEO also stated that the company’s upcoming AI5 chip “will probably be the best inference chip of any kind” for models below ~250 billion parameters, with the “lowest cost silicon and best performance per watt.” Musk added that AI6, which follows AI5, “has a shot at being the best AI chip by far.”

AI6 as Dojo’s successor

While AI5 is nearing production, Musk has also pointed to AI6 as Tesla’s next major target. The chip will be manufactured at Samsung’s upcoming Texas facility, part of a multibillion-dollar deal to support Tesla’s next-generation products such as the Cybercab and the Optimus humanoid robot. Musk also noted that AI6 could effectively replace Project Dojo as Tesla’s training platform, given its potential for both inference and training workloads.

Industry veterans have echoed this view, with former Apple and Rivian engineer Phil Beisel suggesting that “AI6 is now Dojo.” Musk appeared to agree, responding with a “bullseye” emoji. Musk has also noted on X that he would personally be walking the line in Samsung’s upcoming AI6 factory in Texas, to make sure that the facility’s output is accelerated according to Tesla’s requirements.

With panic in streets at some parts of the country, with massive fraud being committed and overlooked perhaps protected by politicians and global relationships in flux there are many forecast that the US$ is no longer the reserve currency it has been for many years. By my analysis this is all self-interested fluff designed to game politicly and personally.

A 40yr+ history of the DXY Index shows the US$ is not collapsing as these actors claim. There have been many factors for US$ strength in the past. It has been a haven during stressful times as during COVID and it has been the place for opportunity as during the lead-up to the Internet Bubble.  Recently Trump settled multiple long-term local conflicts and the shift back to these areas for restorations opportunities is also part of the DXY Index pattern. DXY is designated by the Dashed Black Line(—) in this chart. It should be clearly seen that DXY falls every time EEM and EFA rise which indicate capital flows are exiting the US$ for foreign markets.

Note that earlier versions of EEM showing 0.9% growth has been replaced by a MSCI reformatted EMM with less exposure to Chinese issues. This makes the long-term performance of the reformatted EMM look better at 2% but it does not change my long-term theme that the SP500 outperforms at 10% because of protections to free speech and personal property. This includes protections to intellectual property. The highly touted Chinese marketplace as a growth theme has been overstated for many years. Communist Dictatorships have never and will never be investment worthy.

In my opinion the US$ is acting as it always has. It fluctuates! There is no collapse as claimed and no one need be concerned.

Investing is always a balance of Momentum vs Value at any point in time. The art is to know your economic timeframes, know the limitations of management to produce financials, constantly keep track of what management says “they will do” vs what they in fact do, diversify and use your best judgement.

Thus far, all is good with at least 3yrs of economic expansion ahead of us. But, always be cognizant that market prices always reflect Momentum vs future value expectations and we need to be alert at all times.

At first glance, such spending appears to be wildly excessive. But keep in mind that these four companies – and the U.S. tech sector overall – generate gobs of free cash flow (“FCF”).

The only thing I’d add to this is “crypto risk”. If you watch each of the last selloffs, Bitcoin get hits the first and the hardest.  This is because it has 24/7/365 liquidity and in times of panic, is the first thing sold.  Shorts sellers also know this and add to the drama.

A largest panic and selloff in crypto that lasts could easily bleed into stocks given the vast number of crypto holders out there now.

The US economy is in the early stages of a massive uplift due to the current government tariff policy. Capital is being returned into the US economy for manufacturing and basic industries i.e., steel, aluminum, energy and etc. This leads to building the necessary infrastructure and employment funded by those foreign businesses with a desire to sell their goods with their specific innovation in the US. Tariffs used this way are forcing every manufacturer to fall into merit-based production rather than rely on local tariff protection. This is a revolutionary process that forces individual innovation into the forefront of every addition to every country’s GDP.

For the US this process is likely to take at least 5yrs, likely longer, to garner the productive capacity that we have shifted overseas in past many decades. It is a rebalancing of individual country unique talents to use the tariff system in this fashion. Eventually tariffs will fall back to very low levels once trade balance is achieved based on merit-based compensation rather than selective government subsidy. Meanwhile, the US will regain the GDP associated with its own intellectual innovation that had been shipped overseas and lost to other nations basically for low labor and environmental costs.

Some of our suggested issues have already responded with significant price appreciation reflecting surprise revenue and profit growth. Some selling to rebalance the portfolios for issues yet to respond has been recommended. Yet, some with decent gains today, have such upside potential, i.e., Astronics(ATRO) , Cooper-Standard(CPS) and etc. that they make sense to continue to hold in the face of compelling price potential. ATRO and CPS each have decent potential to rise well over $100shr.

The eventual market top is very likely to be cut short by consumer delinquencies exceeding past thresholds signaling instability in consumer debt. Currently this is in my estimation at least 4yrts+ ahead.

Meanwhile very significant gains are yet ahead as retail sales rise to record levels.

Yes, valuations are high… so investors should have modest expectations for stocks over the next five years

But there’s a huge difference: Earnings growth has supported the current run-up in the tech sector.

Back in the late 1990s, the IT sector price shot up way faster than the earnings. Prices jumped almost 600%, while earnings only grew around 30%. That’s what people called the “irrational exuberance” period – prices disconnected completely from company fundamentals.

Now look at the current cycle on the right. Since the ChatGPT launch in late 2022, both the price and earnings curves have moved up together. Prices are up about 97%, but earnings have also climbed sharply, nearly 87%.

I’ve said it time and time again… If you own quality stocks or index/mutual funds, stay the course.

The Establishment Survey rose 22,000 and the Household Survey rose 288,000. As illegal alien deportations, self or government induced, are numbered between 1-2mil individuals, employment has stalled. This can be clearly visualized in the chart. Government employment is declining as policy changes shrink the total DC govt employment. The rise in native-born employment is reported as rising but is hidden by the decreasing non-native exits. This should prove a multi-year impact and make these series by themselves unreliable regarding historical measures of economic activity.

Instead, we must rely on Real Personal Income, Real Retail Sales, Capacity and Capacity Utilization, Construction Spending,  Durable Goods Orders, Industrial Production and Consumer Debt Delinquencies while keeping in mind that they must fit the consensus-narratives present in markets that represent the drivers of both economic activity and market psychology. Market prices always represent market psychology which in recent years has lagged economics.

Where the economics diverge from market prices lays market opportunities that are generally worth exploiting. At present the economics are decently positive while market psychology remains skewed to AI related issues.

Fed Holds Rates Steady, but Two Officials Back a Cut – WSJ

Ahead of Wednesday’s decision, Trump said he thought the Fed would cut rates in September. Mr Trump had told reporters shortly before the Fed announcement that “I hear they’re going to do it in September.” However, Mr Powell said: “We have made no decisions about September. We don’t do that in advance.”

Powell deflected such speculation, leaving the Fed’s options wide open. He made no effort to tee up a September cut, even though he also wouldn’t rule it out. Expectations of a rate cut declined modestly on Wednesday. After the meeting, investors in interest-rate futures markets saw a roughly 45% chance of a September cut.

Powell and his colleagues are studying how tariffs filter through inflation data in the midst of anxiety that higher goods prices will keep inflation above the Fed’s 2% goal for a fifth year. Inflation has declined notably from 2021-23 highs without the recession many economists had predicted, but officials are cautious about declaring victory and possibly reigniting price pressures by cutting rates prematurely.

On the fiscal front, Trump signed a major tax cut package this month. Some Republican lawmakers are discussing consumer rebates that could add stimulus to an economy the central bank views as near full capacity—raising the odds Fed officials would regret cutting rates if the labor market remains steady.

The July meeting represented an initial fracturing of a Fed consensus to hold steady that emerged six months ago. The question that could further divide policymakers in the coming months is whether tariffs will damage the economy faster than they fuel inflation, and whether waiting for answers risks misjudging any course correction on either front.

The September decision could prove straightforward if the data breaks decisively in either direction. Sticky inflation readings alongside solid growth would make it easier to defer rate cuts, while clear economic deterioration would justify cutting. But if the current muddle persists, Powell faces more agonizing decisions.

I agree with what Bill Ackman said yesterday. By waiting until panic set in before announcing a reprieve, Trump forced the world to see first-hand what the results of a global tariff war would lead to. And he also put tremendous pressure on China, the biggest bad actor of global trade, to change its ways. It was a master-stroke of persuasion. Until yesterday I had begun to fear that Trump was making a huge mistake. Now my fears have been assuaged. We’re not out of the tariff woods yet, but the prospects for a favorable resolution have improved dramatically. Maybe those tariffs Trump threatened weren’t so bad after all, if they help the world understand how bad they can be.

Now let me comment briefly on today’s CPI release, which was a pleasant surprise. The chart below says it all:

Chart #1 compares the year over year change in the CPI index with the same change in the CPI index ex-shelter. The ex-shelter version of the CPI has increased by 2.3% or less for the past 23 months (since May 2023), and it has averaged a mere 1.7% per year for almost two years. In the past year, ex-shelter inflation was only 1.5%. Only shelter costs have kept the broader CPI from long ago meeting the Fed’s objective, and their impact is continuing to fade away. To repeat what I said months ago, tariffs don’t cause inflation. Only monetary policy causes inflation. So far the Fed has been doing a pretty good job of neutralizing the monetary excesses of 2020 and 2021.

Most stock investors aren’t aware of this…

But the bond markets are much larger than stock markets – and bond investors are less tolerant of volatility and losses. So major financial crises (like the global financial crisis) generally occur when bond markets rather than stock markets break down.

This risk – and the rise in interest rates – is likely why President Donald Trump announced his 90-day tariff pause on Wednesday. Barry Ritholtz of Ritholtz Wealth Management posted this summary on social platform X yesterday:

3) Meanwhile, statistician Nate Silver does a good job of analyzing why investors are still very much on edge in yesterday’s post in his Silver Bulletin blog: We shouldn’t rely on markets to tame Trump.

As Silver says, it comes down to investors trying to account for multiple degrees of uncertainty all at the same time:

1. The immediate effect of tariffs;

2. Second-order effects on consumer, business, and investor confidence;

3. Potential spillovers into broader financial markets – particularly the bond market, which had apparently spooked Trump, and

4. What the tariffs imply about Trump’s future actions and the United States’ overall state capacity.

As he puts it:

Investors are relying on a lot of implicit assumptions about an economic world order led by a relatively rational superpower – the United States – that may no longer hold.

And as Silver continues:

True, you’d rather have seen Trump capitulate [on Wednesday] than not. One remarkable feature of markets is that they provide a scoreboard – real-time feedback that even notoriously stubborn Silicon Valley types tend to take seriously. But considering those four buckets above, how secure should investors be feeling? Even with the 90-day pause, consumers and businesses will still be spooked by this and will experience higher prices from the tariffs that remain in place. The long-term effects on the United States’ cultural and financial hegemony are harder to quantify but potentially significant.

Markets and elites “got through” to Trump this time, but what if he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed 90 days from now and isn’t in such a generous mood? Not that I think headline writers should be catering to Trump’s mood swings, but triumphant headlines from Democrats about how Trump “surrendered” might give him second thoughts about doing the same thing next time around if he’s worried about looking like a loser.

In summary, fasten your seat belt… prepare for more volatility… and don’t obsess over the chaotic short-term news flow. Keep your eyes on the horizon.

4) Lost amid all the volatility in the stock market was the March inflation report the government released yesterday…

It showed lower-than-expected price gains, which normally would have made for bigger news. In fact, a month-over-month decline happened for the first time in nearly five years. Meanwhile, year-over-year inflation cooled to 2.4%.

But nobody really cares because of fears that tariffs will spike inflation going forward. Here’s the Wall Street Journal with more on this point: Inflation Eased in March, but Tariffs Threaten to Stoke Price Pressures. Excerpt:

Normally, a slowdown in year-over-year price increases would be welcome news for consumers, who have faced years of high inflation, and the Federal Reserve, which has been struggling to bring down price pressures. But this time, it will be hard for investors, policymakers and businesses to read too much into the March data.

President Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement of sweeping new tariffs didn’t happen until April 2, which means their direct effects won’t show up until the next consumer-price report a month from now.

The article also cited this point from U.S. Bank Chief Economist Beth Ann Bovino: “It’s good news for the Fed, but the data seems stale.”

While the recent inflation numbers are indeed “stale,” the fact that both overall and core inflation are now below 3% gives the Fed more flexibility to cut rates to offset or at least mitigate a tariff-induced recession.

As a former hedge-fund-manager friend of mine – who posts anonymously on X under the handle BeenThereDoneThat Capital – posted yesterday:

On the plus side, my friend is right that the Fed now has room to cut rates to stimulate the economy if needed. (Investors are now expecting four rate cuts this year, up from one just a couple of months ago.)

But there’s a risk that if tariffs lead to higher inflation and an economic slowdown, the Fed’s cuts could fuel even greater inflation. This is yet another risk factor to monitor…

This is the most interesting revelation from the interview, a battle with another hedge-fund titan, which Bill had never discussed publicly:

Ackman also disclosed, for the first time he said, a battle he had around 2017 with another billionaire hedge fund manager, Paul Singer at Elliott Management, who was trying to force Bill out of business by striking him while he was down.

What happened, Ackman explained, was that Elliott took a “big position” in Pershing Square Holdings – the U.K.-based, publicly trading investment company that is Bill’s version of Berkshire Hathaway. He said Elliott then shorted all the stocks in Bill’s portfolio and went long on the stock he had shorted, “making a bet that we’d be forced to liquidate.”

Bill said that Elliott then came to him and tried to “force” him to liquidate. It was a nightmare scenario. “I envisioned an end where the divorce takes all my resources,” he said, “the permanent capital vehicle ends up getting liquidated, and another activist in my industry puts me out of business.” And then he met Oxman “and I had fallen completely in love with her.”

As the article continues, the “nightmare” went on:

[Ackman said] “I was envisioning a world where I was bankrupt, a judge found me guilty of whatever and he sends me off to jail… I find myself in this incredible mess. And I decided I didn’t want things to end that way.”

He then did something he pledged to himself that he would never do: borrow money. He went to JPMorgan Chase and, on “a handshake” with the bank, borrowed $300 million. (“I had been a good client over a long period of time,” he said.)

He used the money to buy up enough blocks of stock in Pershing Square Holdings to thwart Elliott’s strategy…

As he says, “Competition is for losers”—in fiercely competitive markets, profits evaporate, putting the very survival of companies at risk. Why has Google raked in enormous profits, while airlines have barely eked out any over the past century? Here are 11 lessons that unravel this mystery.

1. The divergence between creating and capturing value Creating value and capturing it as your company’s profit are entirely different things. Airlines provide massive value to society, but fierce competition keeps their profit margins razor-thin. Google, on the other hand, creates value and secures much of it as profit through monopoly power.

2. Profit margins are what matter A company’s worth isn’t determined by revenue scale, but by profits and sustainability. No matter how big it gets, a business model that leaves no profits has no future.

3. Perfect competition destroys value Economics textbooks tout perfect competition as ideal, but in the real world of business, it’s a nightmare. Differentiation vanishes, pricing power is lost, and a brutal war of attrition drags on until profits hit zero.

4. The dichotomy of business There are only two kinds of companies in the world: “monopolies” or “perfect competitors.” Any stable middle ground is just an illusion.

5. Lies about market size Monopolists lie to evade regulation by claiming, “We’re just a small player in a cutthroat massive market.” Competitors, to lure investors, lie by saying, “We’re the leader in a niche market.” You need to see through these narratives.

6. Dominate a small market It’s a mistake to target a huge market from the start. Amazon began with books, Facebook with Harvard students, PayPal with eBay’s power sellers. The iron rule is to monopolize a small, conquerable market and expand outward in concentric circles.

7. Ten times better Being just a little better than existing alternatives isn’t enough. PayPal was ten times faster than checks; Amazon had ten times the inventory of bookstores. Only an overwhelming edge enables monopoly.

8. The four elements of monopoly Powerful monopolies combine four elements: proprietary technology, network effects, economies of scale, and brand. When these align, competition becomes irrelevant.

9. Last-mover advantage “First-mover advantage” is overhyped. What matters isn’t being first, but becoming the “last one standing” in that market. Google wasn’t the first search engine; Facebook wasn’t the first social network.

10. The value of the future (DCF) In PayPal’s early valuation, about 75% of the company’s worth came from cash flows more than a decade out. It’s not short-term growth rates that count, but durability—the ability to endure and persist over the long haul—that’s the true source of value.

11. Competition crowds out meaningful work Competition breeds imitation. The more you fixate on rivals, the more alike your products become. In biology as in business, competition diverts resources to the act of competing itself, distracting from true value creation.

PC, desktop internet, mobile internet, etc, all took many years to play out, and were spaced out enough for application companies to grow, mature, and become incumbents themselves. As a baseline, most startups don’t survive during a rapid period of change either. The small minority of incumbents who survive need extreme agility and enough of a stable footing in the last epoch (i.e. a revenue base that doesn’t dissolve too quickly) to fund their evolution. Moreover, it’s usually new startups that drive the disruption that challenges incumbents. This is not the case with AI. In this case, the largest players are the ones continually causing the sea change. The environment is so continuously roiled that there is no stable foundation for application startups to become established before the next wave overtakes them. I’m not talking about incumbents outcompeting them, I’m talking about the landscape changing to make them obsolete. From a practical investment lens, the way to apply this thesis to an AI application startup is to ask: are the fundamental assumptions underpinning this startup’s existence going to be the same in five years? Or will they be unpredictably different? The key here is predictability – if the future will be radically different but you can predict it with confidence, you can pre-position your business. But that’s not the case right now in AI. You can’t skate to where the puck is going if all you know for sure is that 20 people are going to slap the puck in some crazy direction at extremely high velocity. Sea changes are now happening on a 9-12 month cycle. Very few startups can turn into a mature business in that timeframe – and by mature, I mean having all the boring stuff like sales relationships and brand recognition. Yes, your engineers can make the change, but human hiring cycles and team solidification and market relations are incompressible (e.g. if you hire 100 people in a month, your organization will implode). Thus, application companies never quite make it to a full business threshold before the sea change happens out from under them. When I say the incumbents will take the application space, I mean that they’re the only ones who can provide enough internal stability and resources to survive the sea changes they themselves will be driving, NOT that they’re going to provide a superior product. They’re just the ones who won’t starve.

“To me, the biggest imminent threat is just outsourcing thinking. I think that’s a really dangerous thing to do. A couple years ago, I was like, ‘Hey guys, like I do not think this is a safe thing for kids.’ I do not think when you have a developing brain, probably before 24, 25, you should be using a tool that can write for you. I think that’s an incredibly dangerous thing.”

From there, Grimes told the podcast’s host that part of her worries were based on a study about how AI use affects the brains of adults who rely on it. “Studies have been coming out that it is causing neural, brain atrophy basically.”

With the emergence of LLMs, we can do a hell of a lot better than this.

Great questions Bruno. You’re right that teachers do this but for me there is a big distinction: 1. Teachers read the type of error, the hesitation, the student’s facial cues, and their previous pattern of reasoning etc not just the fact they got it wrong. 2. But most vocab apps don’t do that. They only see “wrong = try again,” They log correctness and adjust difficulty post-error (“you missed this, let’s review” etc), which is fine for drill I guess but for vocab and reading comprehension, I don’t think it’s great. For example, vocabulary is not one kind of knowledge; it’s many. Learning “apple” (a concrete fact) is not the same as learning “therefore” (an abstract, logical relationship). This for me is why the reactive/adaptive thing is so crucial. And I’m definitely not claiming LLMs are sorcery! they’re just unbelievable probabilistic pattern recognisers. The thing I think they *might* be able to do is model meaning, not just correctness. So instead of waiting for a wrong answer, an LLM can infer from the type of choice, response time, and linguistic pattern which sub-skill is shaky: morphological, semantic, or contextual. That’s adaptive because it uses the signal before failure to preempt the next best learning moment. I might be way off there but I think that LLMs will be a game changer in terms of this kind of adaptivity mainly because of the predictive processing capabilities. Does that make sense?

‘I built a top 100 app with zero coding skills’

At 33, Sina Sinry has turned a bold idea into one of the most downloaded apps in the United States, without ever writing a single line of code.

The Turkish-born entrepreneur, raised in Langroud, built Flibbo, an AI-powered creative platform that allows users to design short films and digital content. In just two years, the app has drawn more than 500,000 users worldwide and earned a place among the Top 100 on the U.S.

Alpha School is a network of private institutions that embrace AI-based learning for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The school uses AI to help students complete their core academic subjects in just two hours per day, freeing up their afternoons for “life skills.” Workshops listed on the school’s site include “AI Teaching Assistant,” “Public Sales Challenge,” and “Spartan Race Finisher.”

Alpha School doesn’t use the word “teachers” at all, referring to classroom leaders instead as “guides.”

“They don’t do academic teaching,” Liemandt said on the podcast. “If you are an adult in our buildings, you do not do academic teaching.” Calling them teachers, he said, would give “the wrong impression.”

According to its website, the school uses AI to provide students with personalized, one-on-one learning. Liemandt said generating personalized lesson plans for kids was the “magical unlock.”

Alpha School currently has 18 locations listed on its website as open or coming, including in Texas, Florida, and California, with a New York City location scheduled to open in the fall. The school was founded in 2014 and is accredited by Cognia. Location-dependent tuition ranges from $40,000 to $75,000.

Liemandt outlined several ways Alpha School keeps its students motivated, including leaning into gamification, with the ability for students to “unlock” afternoon activities and other privileges by completing their two-hour learning sessions.

He said money is another motivator Alpha School uses that can be controversial among parents.

“Your kid can earn money by doing academics, so they can fund their passion projects,” Liemandt said. He added that parents feel more comfortable about money incentives when their kids use it to fund their passions, like flying somewhere to participate in a play or putting it into an investment fund.

When Shohei Ohtani was a high school freshman, he created a detailed “dream sheet” with one central goal: to be the #1 draft pick for 8 NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) teams. The Harada Method was created by Takashi Harada, a Japanese junior high track coach. He took a team ranked last out of 380 schools and, using his system, turned them into the #1 team in the region within 3 years. They held that top spot for the next 6 years. 2. You start by placing your main goal in the center of an 8×8 grid. For Ohtani, this was “be the #1 draft pick.” 3. Next, you identify 8 critical supporting pillars needed to achieve that goal. The artificial-intelligence startup has turned its for-profit subsidiary into a public-benefit corporation, of which Microsoft will own 27%. • 08/31/2025 – Nick Bostrom: ‘People will look back on 2025 and shudder in horror’

He corrals his risks of AGI into four areas. The first, alignment, covers the paperclip theory. “An alignment failure might result in features that are very suboptimal from our point of view,” suggests Bostrom. “As we build increasingly capable AI systems, how to develop scalable methods for AI control such that we can make sure that these AIs don’t harm us, that they remain aligned with the intentions of their creators.” Bostrom feels that currently AI development labs are thinking critically about this problem.

Secondly, governance, which pertains to how said creators come to a diplomatic agreement not to use AGI for evil. “How we can ensure we humans use these powerful AI tools primarily for beneficial purposes,” says Bostrom. “As opposed to, for example, to wage war against each other or to oppress each other.” Here we’re already on shaky ground. AI systems have already been shown to have inherent biases against minorities, while technology such as AI-enabled drones have been enthusiastically adopted on the battlefield. Tech advances can always be used for good and ill alike.

While these first two get the most attention, there are two more ethical quandaries that Bostrom wants to consider. “It’s the challenge of making sure we respect the moral status of digital minds,” he explains. “This might sound strange, but as we are building increasingly sophisticated and complex AIs, it’s possible that some of those will have various degrees and forms of moral status.”

If, like Bostrom theorises, AIs one day outnumber “biological minds”, we will need rules of respectful engagement. Perhaps memes about slurs for AIs (“clanker”, the derogatory term for droids in Star Wars, is my favourite) could one day be considered genuinely hurtful.

Fourthly, how would we stop superintelligent AIs from oppressing each other? Bostrom postulates that an alien race could bring its own superintelligence into the mix. “If any of those types of beings exist, an important desideratum when we create our own superintelligence is to make sure that it will get along with these other super beings.”

As for the current conversation around the AI we already have — and whether it will take all our jobs — Bostrom is more sanguine. “The goal is full unemployment,” he says. “We’d need to find different bases for our self-worth and dignity and different ways of filling our lives and days, aside from having to work for a living.”

The lawsuit calls attention to Apple’s role as a primary delivery mechanism for AI models as they begin to reshape industries and the global economy. Musk’s litigation will allow the billionaire entrepreneur to bring any potential AI partnerships in front of a judge if he believes Apple or other companies act as unfair gatekeepers.

The suit appears to mimic the Justice Department’s successful antitrust case against Google. A federal judge found that Google illegally monopolized the market for conventional search results, in part by locking up distribution through iPhones. xAI argues that OpenAI is doing something similar for AI-driven search.

Google pays Apple more than $20 billion a year to be the default search provider on the Safari browser. The judge is expected to rule in the coming days about potential ways to improve competition and could ban such payments. That case also closely reviewed Apple’s potential AI partnerships.

The xAI lawsuit calls Apple and OpenAI “monopolists” and says the companies are threatened by xAI and effectively working together to prevent fair competition. The complaint says that AI poses an “existential threat” to Apple’s business and alleges the company is worried about competition from so-called “super-apps” that provide many kinds of functionality, reducing dependence on smartphones. Musk has sought to make X into such a “superapp” with limited success.

A look at one key line item in company earnings reports—capital expenditures—shows that the most valuable tech companies are buying and building stuff at a record pace. The Magnificent 7 tech firms have collectively spent a record $102.5 billion on capex in their most recent quarters, nearly all from Meta, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft and Amazon. (Apple, Nvidia and Tesla together contributed a mere $6.7 billion.)

Investor and tech pundit Paul Kedrosky says that, as a percentage of gross domestic product, spending on AI infrastructure has already exceeded spending on telecom and internet infrastructure from the dot-com boom—and it’s still growing. He also argues that one explanation for the U.S. economy’s ongoing strength, despite tariffs, is that spending on IT infrastructure is so big that it’s acting as a sort of private-sector stimulus program.

Capex spending for AI contributed more to growth in the U.S. economy in the past two quarters than all of consumer spending, says Neil Dutta, head of economic research at Renaissance Macro Research, citing data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Expensive ATM and has a couple bugs to work through, but if you have a bigger home and value your time, feels like a no-brainer. 3. Grok – The most human-like LLM I’ve found thus far. The amount of context, detail, and willingness to answer any question I have for it separates it from the rest. Super excited for 3.5. Might make it #2 depending on how good it is at writing scripts. Could’ve been #2 but Matic has been seriously impressive – plus my wife actually liking it cannot be underestimated.

4. Descript – Has shaved off massive amount of time editing podcasts/videos. Script-based editing is a game changer, and Descript’s constant updates to their functionality make it significantly better in a short period of time. Their automated multi-cam feature makes editing podcasts super easy, and their audio-boost settings make audio much better with little to no effort. They just release an agent functionality that will likely reduce editing time even further “Hey can you apply studio sound, a light compressor, auto-multicam with the TBM preset, and remove audio gaps?” Boom.

5. ElevenLabs – Super high-quality AI generated voices, and their auto-dub feature is actually insane. The marriage between Grok, ElevenLabs, Descript, and whoever can make a legit AI B-Roll/video creator will make some massively successful media houses.

6. Replit – Can make website/apps with super-limited coding knowledge. I’ve used it to improve workflow already. It’s not perfect yet, but the potential is obvious. In another 12 months we’re probably at the point where almost anyone could think of a legitimately useful app/website idea, and have it go live using Replit in less than 4 hours. What are yours?

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said human ability will still be valued, but it won’t be “raw, intellectual horsepower.” In a podcast interview earlier this month, he also talked about the emergence of agentic AI.

On a Jan. 6 episode of the Re:Thinking podcast hosted by Adam Grant, Altman opened up about his ideas on the shifts that AI is going to spur.

“Eventually, I think the whole economy transforms,” he said. “We always find new jobs, even though every time we stare at a new technology, we assume they’re all going to go away.”

While he acknowledged that some jobs do go away, people also find better things to do too, and Altman predicted that’s what will happen with AI, saying it’s the next step in technological progress.

Then Grant pointed to an idea that human agility will be valued amid the AI revolution, rather than ability. Altman said ability will still be valued, but it won’t be “raw, intellectual horsepower.”

“I mean, the kind of dumb version of this would be figuring out what questions to ask will be more important than figuring out the answer,” he added.

One day, everyone will have “a personal AI team, full of virtual experts in different areas, working together to create almost anything we can imagine,” Altman wrote in his 2024 blog post.

“AI models will soon serve as autonomous personal assistants who carry out specific tasks on our behalf like coordinating medical care on your behalf. At some point further down the road, AI systems are going to get so good that they help us make better next-generation systems and make scientific progress across the board,” he added.

As far as timelines go, Altman wrote in a January 2025 blog post that he thinks this year “we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies.”

He said in December at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit he thinks we’ll achieve AGI “sooner than most people in the world think and it will matter much less.”

“We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it,” he added in his January post.

Beyond AGI, the company is also turning its attention to superintelligence, which it defines as “future AI systems dramatically more capable than even AGI.”

“Superintelligent tools could massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation well beyond what we are capable of doing on our own, and in turn massively increase abundance and prosperity,” he wrote in his blog post earlier this year.

Speaking at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit in New York City on Wednesday, Altman said the tech industry will see the first examples of artificial general intelligence in 2025, and it will use different tools to complete it, the report added.

Dell Technologies (DELL) stock sank as much as 12% early Wednesday after the company took a cautious approach to its forecast for investors while warning that AI growth “will not be linear.”

“AI is a robust opportunity … and interest in our portfolio is [at] an all-time high with no signs of slowing down,” Dell COO Jeffrey Clarke said during a call with investors Tuesday night. “That said, this business will not be linear, especially as customers navigate an underlying silicon road map that is changing.”

Dell’s AI server revenues fell 9% in the third quarter from the prior period.

On top of a broader slump in the market for personal computers, that nonlinear growth in the AI space contributed to Dell’s lower full-year outlook for its fiscal year 2025 ending in February.

On the call, Clarke mostly cited a slower-than-expected recovery in the PC market when asked about Dell’s lower guidance, but he also pointed to customers’ shifting trends toward the newest AI chips. Clarke said Dell’s consumers are looking to use Nvidia’s (NVDA) latest Blackwell AI chips in Dell’s servers and those chips have faced some delays. Last week, Nvidia said “production is in full steam” for these chips.

“We saw in Q3 a shift and a pretty rapid shift of the orders moving towards our Blackwell design,” said Clarke, noting that orders for its servers with the Blackwell design make up “a significant portion” of its backlog.

TD Cowen analyst Krish Sankar noted that Dell’s fall in AI server revenue in the most recent quarter was “mostly due to the well-understood Blackwell pushouts.”

Sankar added that Dell’s rising backlog and orders of AI servers worth an estimated $8 billion for the third quarter “are a better representation of actual demand,” noting Dell’s AI pipeline “now stands slightly below $20B.”

He’s not involved in most of the things that his companies are doing.  He’s involved in the thing that is the biggest problem right now until that thing is fixed. And then, he doesn’t have to be involved in it anymore, he can go focus on the next thing that’s the biggest problem for that company right now.  In manufacturing, there’s this concept of the bottleneck. In any manufacturing chain, there’s always some bottleneck, something that is keeping the manufacturing line from running the way that it’s supposed to. Whatever the bottleneck, it’s holding everything up.  The job number one is to remove that bottleneck and get everything flowing again. I think Elon basically has universalized that concept and he basically looks at every company like it’s some sort of conceptual assembly line.  I don’t need to manage everything else because everything else, by definition, is running better than that. I can go focus on that.  A lot of CEOs, especially non-technical CEOs, would really struggle to implement his method. When he identifies the bottleneck, he goes and he talks to the line engineers who understand the technical nature of the bottleneck.  If it’s people on a manufacturing line, he’s talking to people directly on the line. Or if that’s people in a software development group, he’s talking to the people actually writing the code.  He’s not asking the VP of Engineering to ask the Director of Engineering to ask the manager to ask the individual contributor to write a report that’s to be reviewed in three weeks. He doesn’t do that. He would throw them all out of the window. There’s just no way he would do that.  He goes and personally finds the engineer who actually has the knowledge about the thing, and then he sits in the room with that engineer and fixes the problem with them.  This is why he inspires such incredible loyalty, especially from the technical people who he works with. Elon Musk has built some of the world’s most valuable companies, from Tesla to SpaceX. A key driver of his success is a relentless focus on solving problems fast, often by working directly with the engineers or coders who’ve gotten stuck, Marc Andreessen says.

The legendary venture capitalist shared his insights from working closely with Musk on X, xAI, and SpaceX during a recent episode of the “Modern Wisdom” podcast.

Unlike many CEOs, Musk is devoted to understanding every aspect of his businesses, the Andreessen Horowitz cofounder and general partner said. He’s “in the trenches and talking directly to the people who do the work,” and acting as the “lead problem solver in the organization.”

Musk’s businesses include Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, xAI, The Boring Company, and X — formerly Twitter. Andreessen said that every week at each of his companies, Musk “identifies the biggest problem that the company is having that week and he fixes it. And then he does that every week for 52 weeks in a row. And then each of his companies has solved the 52 biggest problems that year, in that year.”

In contrast, the bosses of most large corporations spend months or years holding meetings, watching presentations, and conducting legal and compliance reviews before they address their most pressing issues, Andreessen told host Chris Williamson.

Elon Musk’s latest venture is not a rocket or an electric car, but Ad Astra, an educational institution for early childhood education.

Ad Astra has officially received its permit to operate in Bastrop County, Texas. Musk, who is co-leading President-elect Donald Trump’s DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), invested $100 million in the school via his X Foundation.

The school is set to open its doors for the 2024-25 academic year, offering a progressive, STEM-focused curriculum for children aged 3 to 9. It will be run by Greg Marick, CEO of Xplor Education, a firm that partners with U.S.-based companies to deliver Montessori-style programs. STEM refers to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Ad Astra, Latin for “to the stars,” sums up Musk’s vision of cultivating the next generation of problem solvers and builders. According to the website, the school’s mission is “to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.” It says it emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and find solutions to real-world problems.

The curriculum is described as integrating STEM subjects with activities ranging from coloring and collage-making to studying maps and globes.

  The entrepreneur has long talked about a physics-based, problem-solving viewpoint that his new Twitter CEO invoked in her first memo to staff

The first principles process involves envisioning what ultimate success looks like and then being open to any path that leads there. Even something so ingrained in traditional schooling, such as accreditation, showed how Musk’s mind applied first principles reasoning in decision making, raising very simple questions: “What’s accreditation? Why does it exist? What’s it for? What’s the cost? What’s the opportunity cost of doing that?”

And the answers can’t simply be: That is what other schools do. 

“Reasoning by analogy, especially in the early days, is the thing that’s a total killer,” Dahn said.

Musk’s business successes and his often-stated focus on first principles have sparked interest in others. James Clear, the bestselling self-help author, has written about the approach, writing that while great minds from Aristotle to Johannes Gutenberg have employed such reasoning, “no one embodies the philosophy of first principles thinking more effectively” than Musk.

Ad Astra closed at SpaceX in Hawthorne, Calif., when Musk’s children moved on. Dahn has since spun off his work into Astra Nova School, an online offering for a broader population of students.

Still, it isn’t an easy approach. For Musk’s engineers, the work of unlearning assumptions can be challenging, especially at times when the tried-and-true method would be quicker.

Musk lectured on first principles at his children’s school years ago, diving into his reasoning behind starting SpaceX, including the math behind a rocket and the economics behind its costs.

As he began, Musk asked the kids: “Does anybody have any experience with first principles analysis?”
