Event Description: Healing Past the Hurt: Getting Love Wrong to Get It Right
facilitated by: Tim'm T. West

How many black gay men are still beating themselves up for relationships long gone? How has being hurt prevented many of us from even seeing someone right before our very eyes? There's no denying that "Hurt People, Hurt People". How does this truism play out in our quest to find and build, not just strong, healthy romantic relationships, but friendships as well? In Atlanta, which is known as the world's "Black Gay Mecca" why do so many express frustration or apathy for finding strong, lasting relationships and friendships? In this discussion, lead by Tim'm T. West, Community Building Specialist for Deeper Love Project at AID Atlanta, and also a poet and activist, we will explore the power of both self-awareness and self-forgiveness as we strive to understand how failures in loving are better seen as LESSONS in loving.

Tim'm reads at Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Showcase

When: Sun Jun 22, 2008 3pm to 5pm

Description:Deeper Love Project is a discussion forum for black gay men in Atlanta. We nurture brotherhood, holistic wellness, and encourage awareness and safety around HIV/AIDS. This months discussions will center around Maskulinity? This week, the topic is: Masculinity Has Its Privileges: Don’t Leave Home Without It? Paragraph Summary: From the day males are born, we receive messages about what appropriate male behavior is. It is almost always certainly masculine. Those of us who, for a myriad of reasons, cannot conform to a dominating patriarchal masculinity are usually ostracized, put down, and ridiculed: "Get up, stop crying and fight like a man" or "Stop acting like a girl". Those of us who were able to "pass" as straight usually suffered less abuse; if our silence presented its own painful challenges. What privileges come with masculinity? What responsibilities to our not so masculine black gay brothers do the butch guys have? If we are all our brother’s keepers, then what does it mean to be an ally across masculine and effeminate gender expressions? In this discussion we will interrogate and demystify what it means to have masculine privilege in the black gay community.

Tim'm coordinates Deeper Love Project Discussions

When: Wed May 21, 2008 7pm to Wed May 21, 2008 8:30pm

Description:Deeper Love Project is a discussion forum for black gay men in Atlanta. We nurture brotherhood, holistic wellness, and encourage awareness and safety around HIV/AIDS. This months discussions will center around Maskulinity? This week, the topic is: How Much is Too Much? Paragraph Summary: "Those girls are doing TOO MUCH!" We’ve all heard it before. For black gay men there are expectations, unspoken or apparent, about what is an appropriate gender behavior in professional settings, at church, at the clubs, when around family. What would it mean to be yourself across all these settings, however "true self" shows up; and is there any truth to someone doing "too much". Who decides this? How might our internalized homophobia inform how we reprimand brothers who we believe are showing off or feeling free? Do we acknowledge or ignore our brothers publicly who we feel are doing "too much"? Can one be too femme? Too butch? Is there a double standard related to how we assess hyper-masculinity versus hyper-femininity? Bring your boxing gloves or your pumps. This is sure to be a respectfully provocative battle between queens, butch queens, and everyone else. Bring it through the doorway!

Tim'm coordinates Deeper Love Project Discussions

When: Wed May 14, 2008 7pm to Wed May 14, 2008 8:30pm

Description:Deeper Love Project is a discussion forum for black gay men in Atlanta. We nurture brotherhood, holistic wellness, and encourage awareness and safety around HIV/AIDS. This months discussions will center around Maskulinity? This week, the topic is: Who wears the Timbs in the Bedroom? Paragraph Summary: Masc or Fem? What do the roles we play in the bedroom say about our perceptions and ideas about gender? Does the idea of a feminine top or masculine bottom upset you or get you excited? Is the term "boy pussy" a turn on OR offensive? In this, our first conversation in a series of discussions about masculinity, we will examine how masculinity and effeminate behavior fits into overarching ideas of masculine and feminine gender roles. As black gay men, how do we think outside of the traditional heteronormative box about how we express ourselves sexually, socially, and in our friendships?

Tim'm coordinates Deeper Love Project Discussions

When: Wed May 7, 2008 7pm to Wed May 7, 2008 8:30pm

“A black male warrior fighting for the right to love other black men, Marlon Riggs affirms what was nearly lost, newly found: the certainty that black male lives are utterly precious.” – Alice Walker, Author, The Color Purple

Tongues Untied, Marlon T. Riggs’s controversial classic documentary chronicling the black gay male experience, will be shown at Eyedrum Gallery on Friday, April 18th at 8pm, as a joint presentation of PinkEye indie queer cinema & Film Love.

The film will screen with “Behind Every Good Man”, a rare 1965 film short that is the first ever film about an openly gay black man in the United States. A panel discussion will follow. The screening is co-presented by In The Life Atlanta, Deeper Love program of AID Atlanta, Men of Onyx and MondoHomo Dirty South.

"Tongues Untied" is a beautiful experimental film created by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Marlon T. Riggs. Using poetry, personal testimony, rap and performance (featuring poet Essex Hemphill and others), "Tongues Untied" describes the homophobia and racism that confront Black gay men.

Marlon Riggs’s portrayal of homophobia and racism caused controversy during Tongues Untied’s original 1991 airing on PBS’s P.O.V. series and contributed to the national debate about the National Endowment for the Arts funding for art with nudity, gay themes, and pointed political commentary. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of this landmark film's production and the film's release onto home DVD! (Film courtesy of Frameline Distribution, San Francisco)

“Tongues Untied continues to speak to viewers today with the same power that provoked heated controversy during its original release,” said Michael Lumpkin, Artistic Director of Frameline, the country’s biggest gay film distributor and festival. “Twenty years later, Tongues Untied remains the definitive expression of the gay black male experience as well as the touchstone for the personal documentary filmmaker.”

Riggs’s stories are fierce examples of homophobia and racism: the man refused entry to a gay bar because of his color; the college student left bleeding on the sidewalk after a gay-bashing; the loneliness and isolation of the drag queen. The stories also affirm the black gay male experience: protest marches, smoky bars, “snap divas,” humorous musicology, and vogue dancing.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Atlantan Reginald Jackson (who appears in the film), community members who knew Marlon Riggs, and other folks knowledgeable about his art and life, and the many issues his work brings up.

Frameline (www.frameline.org), one of the world’s premiere organizations supporting LGBT films and filmmakers, released the remastered DVD in March 2008. The DVD includes an archival interview with director Marlon Riggs, and newly produced interviews with Isaac Julien, Phill Wilson, Juba Kalanka, and Herman Gray, as well as never-before-released deleted scenes.

Tim'm brings Front Porch to Furman University

When: Fri May 16, 2008 7pm to Fri May 16, 2008 9pm
