Is HIV the only concern, or should we be thinking about the consequences of our choices as it relates to other sexually transmitted infections? Why do I even have to be concerned? These are only a few questions that you may ask yourself when you hear about HIV. It is important for all of us to be knowledgeable about HIV, whether you are infected or affected by it. We will look at our thoughts and attitudes about HIV, and see how that impacts and drives the decisions and choices that we make in a particular situation, and over time. Many black gay/bi/sgl men in Houston anxiously marked the day by honoring their mother independent of celebrations associated with Houston's SPLASH or Black Gay Pride. While some celebrated Mothers Day and Black Pride, others chose to honor one event and not the other. While many brothas "in the life" are/were out to their mothers (those still living as well as those who may have transitioned), we will consider a few questions: Is an unspoken "understanding" enough to constitute being "out"? How many GBM operate under a "don't ask/don't tell" policy as a courtesy to families we assume will never understand or accept our "lifestyle choices"? Is it in fact true that "mothers always know" and are sometimes waiting for their sons to confirm (e.g., the glass closet many, ironically, GBM suffocate in)? And lastly, what about those relationships with mothers that are strained or permanently damaged because of you have "come out"? What about those relationships that have been strengthened through the "coming out" experience? What do we lose or gain by being OUT or not? Event Description: Tim’m West at HSU Library 3 – 4pm, Friday, April 17, 2009 Fishbowl (Room 209), HSU Library Tim’m West is an educator, scholar, journalist, poet, activist, and hip hop artist. He completed his B.A. at Duke University majoring in Philosophy with a focus on Women’s Studies. A former instructor of Writing Pedagogy at Eugene Lang College of The New School (NYC) and in Stanford University’s Writing and Critical Thinking program, he received an M.A. in Liberal Studies/Philosophy from Graduate Faculty at The New School for Social Research in 1998, and in January of 2002, an M.A. in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford. In 2003 he released a critically acclaimed poetic memoir Red Dirt Revival, in 2005 a chapbook BARE, and released his second full-length book, Flirting in early 2007. Musically, he released his solo debut, Songs from Red Dirt on Cellular Records, followed by the critically acclaimed Blakkboy Blue(s) and In Security: The Golden Error (go to myspace.com/timmwest to listen to tracks). Tim'm is also featured in two Hip Hop documentaries: Alex Hinton's "Pick Up the Mic" (LOGO) and Byron Hurt's "Beyond Beats and Rhymes" (PBS). Tim’m has been interviewed by the Washington Post, The Advocate, Rolling Stone, the BBC, and other media affiliates – testament to his place as a foundational maverick among young black multi-disciplinary artists. He has taught at Stanford University, Oakland School of the Arts, and Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for Public Policy. He is a Visiting Lecturer in Ethnic Studies at HSU. Event Description: Queering Hip Hop AAAS 132 Thursday, April 2 1:15-2:30pm Friedl 107 In her seminal essay “Deviance as Resistance,” political scientist Cathy Cohen writes, “I continue to be interested in the possibility of constructing a field of investigation based in African American Studies and borrowing from queer theory and Black feminist analysis that is centered around the experiences of those who stand on the ~outside of state sanctioned, normalized White, middle- and upperclass, male heterosexuality.” Substituting Cohen’s “African-American Studies” with “Hip-Hop,” the goal of “Queering Hip-Hop” is to examine Hip-Hop Culture and Rap Music through the lens of black queer and black feminist analysis with a particular focus on iterations of Hip-Hop that challenge mainstream perceptions of “who and what” hip-hop is.
