Senior advice

TD IM Frisbee

For the first time in a long time, I came out to an IM game: TD Ultimate Frisbee vs. Pierson. I forgot how much fun it is to gather round in the courtyard, jog over to catch the bus, and meet new TD'ers who share the same passion for the sport as you do. The game was a thrilling success; props to Julia who played the entire game as the only girl on the field.

However, I'm concerned with the low number of freshmen and girls that I saw coming out for the events. I remember my freshman year, we had an entourage of 20 or so players, mostly freshman, cheering and shouting at the sidelines every time our team scored. It really was a party atmosphere at that point. We were first in the standings for the Tyng Cup, and the momentum that we built peaked in the spring, when everyone wanted to be part of the action.

There's an IM study break tonight: I'll be there, and I hope to see some (unfamiliar) freshman faces. After all, someone's gotta take over after us champions leave ;)

We don't have fires on West Campus

Apparently at West Campus, we don't have fires, but "fire conditions":

"Attention: there is a fire condition in building B-31. Do not enter that buliding. BLARGGG"

Every building on the facility is apparently equipped with an external loudspeaker. The phrase above is blaring throughout the entire campus in a soothing female emergency voice. It makes it feel like some sort of war movie right before an invasion: people are gathering outside, confused, with an ominous alarm setting the backdrop to it all.

My lab is in B-31. When the alarm sounded, I grabbed my backpack and evacuated with the dozens of other researchers that seemed to emerge out of the woodwork. I hope this is a drill.

First day of spring, last weeks of Yale

The weather today was as beautiful as it has ever been in New Haven. Balmy, sunny, cloudless, and calm. Suddenly, I got that dry feeling in my throat that told me I wasn't getting any work done today.

And apparently, so did the rest of Yale. People were chatting on blankets in the courtyard. A group of Frisbee players shared Cross Campus with a pickup game of soccer played with cones for goals. I barely managed to extricate myself from the temptation of joining in: I knew if I got my cleats and started playing, the day was going to be a wash for sure.

As I turned to Cross Campus and Beinecke Plaza and aimlessly wandered through the same stone space I had explored as a freshman, and even as a prefrosh, it hit me how little time I have time I have left as a Yale student. Five weeks of classes. Two weeks of finals. A weeks of Myrtle, a week of senior dead week bliss, and the door of TD is going to shut behind me fast and hit me on the way out. I'll have to get a new e-mail address. I'll have to get my own place. If I ever want Cracklin' Oat Bran, I'll have to buy my own box instead of scooping from the bottomless supply that Yale Dining seems to have.

But I feel ready. If there's anything Yale has prepared me for, it's being on my own. Realizing that if you want anything done, you'll have to do it yourself. Realizing that I knew little coming in to this place, and am only barely smarter coming in on my way out. I have a lot to learn. But I'm ready to do it, in whatever environment I find myself.

I guess I'll just have to make the most of the time I have left. See you around the courtyard.

Welcome to the Class of 2015!

This is what your college looks like in the fall. No big deal.

Hey guys,

My name is Josh and I'm a senior in TD. I heard that the blog is being sent around on the TD 2015 Facebook so I decided I'd throw up a welcome message for our brand new class.

I only have a few things to say about TD. First of all, it's the best place to spend freshman year. Not only do you get to live with all the other TD freshmen, but you also get to live next to the upperclassmen, who can be a great source of advice (and fun). Second of all, you are right next to your own dining hall and you get to sit in the special long tables right in the middle. Third, you have literally the best Dean at Yale college, and the coolest Master. Fourth, you have a ROCKING group of FroCos this year. And trust me, they're excited to meet you. And last but not least, you have Llamaland. What is that? I dunno. Stop asking me questions.

My good friend Max and I started this blog our freshman year to document our zany, wacky, and fun TD experiences. Feel free to browse the archives for some funny posts. There's also a helpful advice section you can access from the sidebar. (Or here if you're lazy.) We're thinking of starting it up again now that we're seniors, so keep on the lookout for some shiny new posts when school starts.

Hope you have a good summer and can't wait to see all of you on the courtyards and IM fields.

TD FALL PHOTO CONTEST

Hey, loyal TDers!

So, to get things moving here, it was suggested by Josh Pan (-though I'm not entirely sure how serious he was when he suggested it, but here it goes!) that we hold a Fall Photo Contest here on the blog!

The rules/details are as follows:

1. Send in your photos related to the fall time, Yale, and preferably TD to me, at autumn.vonplinsky@yale.edu

2. Keep the resolution and size to something reasonable (e.g., nothing super, computer-crashingly huge, but no thumbnail-sized photos, either, please)

3. Have the submissions in by November 12th

4. As a reward for first, second, and third place, you'll get your photo posted here on the blog, so, you'll get eternal glory and fame. What more could you want?*

*So, I know you guys could want something else, so, more on that to come....

Your judges will be me, AVP TD '13, and Ellen Su, TD '13. If anyone other TDer (I'm looking for just one more taker) wants to be a judge, let me know as soon as possible!

So I just got a post from Michael Holkesvik '13 on Facebook about the strangest coincedence--ever. Years ago, when I was a freshman, I posted the day we found out that we had received visitors to this site from all 50 states. The last state to visit was South Dakota. The celebratory post is here:

In a spiritual collision of all things Timothy Dwight, a current TD'er posted about someone visiting the TD site... that would eventually become a TD'er himself.

This all made me want to start posting again. The Freshman Intro video's, the Featured Yalie's, the DJ's of the Week. I want it all back. Does anyone else miss the site and would like to see some new content? I know Autumn '13 misses the site. I'm betting you Nico Bowie '10 would like to see some action. Anyone else? Leave a comment below and if there's support I might kick up the site again.

Hey everyone!

I (along with many others) have noticed it's been a bit quiet in here lately. I know it's winter, birds have migrated, bears are hibernating, etc., but it's no excuse! I have to apologize for the slacking off I've done.

But speaking of getting it started again, as that was my initial intention, I was wondering, what do YOU guys want to see? I'm not totally in charge here, I know, but I thought we could get a few ideas bouncing around here, see what people want to see, and see what we can do 'bout that. :D

Sorry, I just was excited/slightly confused about that fact that my posts were going to be one right after the other. WOAH.

Hot for Chocolate: Willoughby's

DUDES!

Today is a momentous day in TD Blog history, for today is the day that Jackie Parilla (TD '12) and I launch the "Hot for Chocolate" (inspired by this glorious YouTube channel) column. We'll be doing reviews of hot chocolate at coffeehouses (and some more unorthodox hot chocolate places) in quest of the best hot chocolate in New Haven.

Casting Call... DJ of the Week!

Dudes! As those of you who read the blog last year know, we used to have a column where each week someone in TD would be a guest DJ on the blog. Let's bring it back! If you're a musical master (or at least have better musical taste than me... it's not hard!), we want YOU on the TD blog.

The TD blog is looking for a multi-talented individual to host this column. The specific abilities we're looking for are:
* Can use words to create sentences
* Knows who Kanye West is
* Can use the "Internet"

It's a pretty tall order, but I have a feeling at least SOMEBODY will qualify. Oh it will also help if you have a webcam and a lot of TD spirit!

The weekly DJ column is a lot of fun, you get to meet a ton of your fellow TD'ers, and PEOPLE'S MOMS WILL LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYLISTS. How awesome is that?!?!

Why am I not doing the weekly DJ column this year? Well, besides the fact that Devin has almost murdered me for my obsession with Lady Gaga and other lyrical geniuses of the early 21st century, I'm about to start a new column with non other than TD's own JACKIE PARILLA! About what? Let's just say, the title of the column is "Hot for Chocolate". Yeah. Get pumped.
