Not war.

It makes me sad that congress will not pursue peace. It makes me sad that the president won't work with the Congress, but its pretty clear a majority of congress will NOT negotiate with Iran. Congress is right, technically, that an executive treaty is against the constitution and may fall under a new administration. That said, it would have made us look less divided had we issued the letter to the press and to the president, or even in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Post.

We have an adversarial relationship with Iran. It may be because we overthrew their democratically elected government in 1953. 25 years later when the people rebelled against the Shah (who we installed as a dictator in 1953) the revolution in the street overran the US embassy and took prisoners.

Revolutions are messy. Then we financially backed Saddam Hussain and sold him chemical weapons that Saddam used on Iran.. until he grew out of control and we had to deal with the tyrant we put in power.

I'm sure Iran and its people are afraid what we will do next.

Iran has never attacked a sovereign nation without provocation (Iraq war) They are alleged to have backed terrorism, of course, but most of it is presumed, not proven.

We have to be careful of course, trust but verify, but we have (get this) 45 miltary bases around the perimeter of Iran. If we do come to an agreement, and they break it, we could destroy them in 20 minutes.

This will end, either in peace or in war. I prefer and pray for peace. I pray for our congress and our president, that they may find consensus. That they may work for peace and toil long and hard before they send more of our kids into war.
<!--

In New Jersey, the Republican governor is saying he may overturn a law and put the decision to the people, because he feels the law has been misinterpreted.

Now, some may think this conversation is about Gay marriage. It isn’t. Its about the rule of law vs. the rule of the majority.. democracy.

When a law is popular, there is little rebellion. That is because the majority of people agree with it. When a law goes against what the majority believe, however, rebellion comes. There is unrest. The rule of law is viewed as tyranny.

That’s because the majority will always vote for democracy.

Think about it, in the United States, its probably safe to say that Christians, Whites and heterosexuals want democracy.. for now, at least.

But, its also safe to say this:

The poor don’t want a democracy.

African Americans don’t want a democracy.

Jews don’t want a democracy.

Homosexuals don’t want a democracy.

The homeless don’t want a democracy.

Orphans don’t want a democracy.

The unborn don’t want a democracy.

The United States is not a Democracy. It is a Constitutionally-limited Republic. (They don’t teach that in our schools anymore.)

The constitution wasn’t written so that the majority will get what they want. The constitution was written to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

That’s why the majority will always vote for a democracy.

<!--

I told him the story of when I first wanted a quality stereo system. I was walking through a Hi-Fi shop (ha.. that’s what we called them then) and they were playing a half-speed mastered disk of Crime Of The Century, Supertramp’s first LP. The song that was playing was SCHOOL.

My friend is a few years younger than I am and he didn’t know the song. I quickly did a youtube search and found it. I turned up the monitors and played it for him, relating my recollection of my first hearing..

I was walking past a set of speakers at the end of the first verse while the guitars were slowly building. There were the sounds of children playing in the background as the tension in the music slowly wound up.. they were laughing and yellling. As the guitars wound up... I was dead center between the speakers.. a little girl screamed, just a split second before the band kicked in, and when they did. It was Electric!

I stopped in my tracks and turned 90 degrees and stood there for the remainder of the song. Wow. Within a month I owned a thousand dollar stereo component set. It was the best money I ever spent.

As I relived that moment with my friend, I couldn’t help but think this was before click tracks and midi, and pro-tools, and autotune. Before engineers could individually move wave-forms around independently on their individual tracks. Before they could cut and paste cuts in place and comp vocals and instrumental takes with a swipe of the mouse.

This was the definition of synergy. As we listenened to the band go from full on jamming, back to a break-down half-way through the 5 1/2 minute song, my friend said, “this would never happen in today’s music” . I’m hoping that’s not true. I’m hoping that there’s room for this type of magic to happen again. Even though it might be on ear-buds, instead, I long for my kids to feel the way I felt the first time I heard that little girl scream.

The moment I spoke of occurs at 1:44
<!--

Eva and I have written a few tunes together and recently she asked me to write a hymn with her.

When we were researching the hymn, Eva sent me a link to a sermon on the subject. It turned out that the sermon was an all-night sermon from new year’s eve, 1960. The speaker was W.A. Criswell. Wally Amos Criswell was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas from the mid 40’s until the mid 90’s. Pastor Criswell dedicated my two oldest children. He was a gentle soul with a powerful passion for the gospel and people.

The sermon was entitled, “The Scarlet Thread”, the same title we had chosen for our hymn, and was about the common thread of God’s holy sacrifice throughout the history of mankind. Amazingly, the audio tape of the sermon was available in the W.A. Criswell library online! It was amazing to me to listen to a sermon from so long ago, and to be so moved and enlightened. It was an exciting find.

W.A. died in 2002. First Baptist Dallas has had eight senior pastors since its beginning, but only two pastors, George Truett and Dr. W.A. Criswell, for the period between the church’s founding in 1897 through 1995.

The hymn, SCARLET THREAD is the result. Here’s a video of the demo:

<!--

In fact, the communication of text on page doesn’t really have the means to convey what I want to communicate. The concert was a blast to the senses. A massage for the mind. It was very beautiful. It went from subdued to boisterous. The only way it could have been more complete, from a sensory standpoint, would be if they passed specific things to eat upon crucial downbeats and then generated smells that could waft through the audience as the mood of the music shifted.

It drew upon the talents of so many people, from the player who played the vibraphone with a bow, to the fantastic shadow, fractal, and stop-frame animations upon the full-stage backdrop of a barren forrest, to the lighting artist who It was really amazing.

All this in the beautiful Fillmore, which is a turn-of-the-20th-century opera house that has survived the 21st century economy.

I am continually amazed at how God reveals his creativity. Furthermore, when it is revealed through those who may not even know who He is. How the rain falls upon the just and the unjust... but, is still rain.. life giving, inspiring, thirst-quenching, glorious rain.

If you’re interested in the show details, here’s a couple of videos that tell about the making of the show:

http://www.youtube.com/user/XLRecordings?feature=chclk#p/u/15/4vrGixR7rbM

http://www.youtube.com/user/XLRecordings?feature=chclk#p/u/14/vStUA0g71sM

Someone shot a video of the encore at the actual concert in Detroit...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P9ajJHNgY8

<!--

How, in the midst of a omnipotent power, we are each handed the ability to choose. How we are given the choice, each day, between our own agendas and a higher agenda.

In the mix, of course, are the evil forces that control this world at present. This makes the choices much muddier than they otherwise would be. Most would admit that “a higher calling” is downplayed in this world we live.

For those of us fortunate enough to have been brought up by God-fearing parents, we have a better perception than most. But even given that advantage, I find the choices more and more obscured as our hearts acclimate to a colder and colder world.

It’s amazing to me that people will choose to rebel against the creator, and yet, how can I dare be amazed when I do it myself everyday.

It was in one of these thoughtful times I sat down and wrote a lyric. Know, as I remember, its been almost 5 years. I got a message a few weeks back that a publisher wants to sign the song and start pitching it. I’d almost forgotten about it.

I may ruffle some feathers with this song, and you may have a theological difference with me on this. To be honest, I struggle with it still. I know that there’s a plan and a knowledge of our lives, but I also know our free will is a part of that plan and that knowledge. Perhaps you struggle with it, as well. Let me know what you think.

When I wrote the lyric, I tried to give it a musical life, but ended up asking a friend of mine to put it to music.

Alan Johnston is a great songwriter from the state of West Virginia, and he has a voice and life that can speak truth into these lyrics. Alan’s had songs nominated for IBMA’s song of the year, and has had his songs sung by the legendary greats of bluegrass.

When Alan sent me the track, he urged me to add some piano. I decided it was just right where it was, and frankly, I was scared to add anything more.

Here’s a link to the demo: YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

Here’s the lyric:

You Can Change The World
(But you can’t change me)
©2010 Tim Wheeler, Alan Johnston

Chorus:
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
And If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy

You can lead a horse to water
You can force a horse to drink
You can get inside a horse’s head
And teach him how to think, and

You can change the world, but you can’t change me
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
And If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy

You can stage a protest
You can change the laws
You can march on Washington
And stand up for your cause, and

You can change the world, but you can’t change me
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
And If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy

You can be for the devil
You can be for the Lord
You can be for the president
Don’t care who you’re working for, cause

You can change the world, but you can’t change me
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
And If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy

You can walk on water
You can heal the blind
You can offer me forgiveness
It don’t matter ‘cause you’ll find that

You can change the world, but you can’t change me
You can change the world, but you can’t change me
See, If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy
If I don’t let you, you can’t change my legacy

<!--

I was blown away... blessed... and very proud:

i know this is quite different from my typical posts,

but when i started this blog, i intended for it to be an honest and real space where i could not only share snippets of my life and provide inspiration (and whatever else it is i do on here), but also a space where i could share my struggles and bring glory to God.

and well, right now i feel like doing just those things.

so deal with it ;)

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr1rIPgqRZJ15r6cGc0uwdMFH9v1pHdFS8Fn36uoBharw2nW6i0AY_B17rhSQxVfgSjk7EqzfqG2KJMwlhW8WSDjABvIyU5woNlhCl0pJiFvG1rnTk-M_Gy4TIYv1vavSgGcELW2qPziXR/" color: rgb(67,108,122);">marriage,

joel and i have had our share of financial struggles,

between me losing my job, twice, & struggling to find work, and Joel going to school full-time.

last summer we even had to move in with my parents

because we simply couldn't afford to pay rent

(you don't know how much i appreciate having our own space now)!

during all of these struggles, i always found it difficult to fully trust that God would take care of us, that he would provide in one way or another. instead, i would let worry plague me.

most recently, i have been worrying about what we are going to do less than a month from now, when Joel's full-time job turns into a part-time job (with lower pay).

joel has been amazing about trusting that God will work it out

because he always does, but me, well i've been feeling scared and doubtful.

this past weekend, a defining moment transpired, where God asked me to take a significant step of faith and finally trust our finances to him. i felt his reassurance that he would indeed provide and i finally let go of what i had considered up to that point to be "my" money,

and i trusted him with it.

i'm not going to lie - it was really scary.

but it was so freeing at the same time.

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcLDPxyCLJFGb2YAoqvroBdaoWFmPR4mvtwbMJYXv7yYZNhot57L8Nr5-78BNpNsNAO2M4wJ2a471xl8xrbnxwnNJaodiPuJxs-dsGiEMPsWYX-ZTMvB2UNOsejq_j0T56ycTb4rhdLDEy/" color: rgb(142,179,109);">blessings he's been pouring on us since then.

i truly feel his faithfulness.

in just these past few days, we have been given several free meals,

my Etsy sales have been on a serious upsurge, and i even won a gift certificate to a vintage shop on Etsy (this was very exciting to me as i have not been able to spend any money on fun things because of our tight budget. as a girl who loves to shop, it has not been easy in the slightest).

of all the blessings we've been experiencing, the most praise-worthy is what transpired today.

joel landed a job at the university that literally begins the week after his current one turns part time.

no joke.

it came out of nowhere.

he was actually personally contacted about the job yesterday.

they interviewed him today and offered him the job on the spot.

apparently he was hand-picked for the position, and he is still baffled at why/how.

(although i am not.. i think he is more widely known/respected across campus than he thinks).

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNrwoHWLgTLihIOsAA367q_JhKex9JcZy4lSJHM5Vzh9K_uJeZKwOK542BDQOosVmSZr_lkErw4w2QpA9Ntkh0hHZ6-zH4ijIOnvyLqJwkMDT4qHUUx-GLEUR5M19-IuIHyTK9qZ0CKXaj/" color: rgb(67,108,122);">clear that God was at work here.

this is truly a testimony that when you trust,

God is indeed faithful.

he may not work according to our own timing,

but i am slowly learning that

his timing is best.

help me to trust you with not only my finances, but with all areas of my life, Lord.

<!--

Driving down after church on Easter.

This trip will be great. I’m looking forward to writing with some of my Nashville friends, and this time I’m getting a little help setting up some appointments, as well. I’m excited to work with some new folks, and I’m scurrying to get my ideas organized and quivered up.

My mantra when going into a new cowrite is to always have more to offer than is needed, and one of the most sought after resources in a cowrite, especially a new one, is ideas. WIthout a good idea, all the craft in the world can not render something worth the time. I’ve been storing up my thoughts and ideas and hooks for the past few months, and adding them to the ones I’ve had for awhile. Its always a fun time to go back and revisit some that have fallen out of my memory.

I’m looking forward to getting with some of the writers from the Write About Jesus conference in St. Louis. I don’t know who will be in town the week I’m down, but I’m sure it will be a blessing, no matter who they are.

Another new thing, this time, is that I may play out a bit. I’m not too used to playing out, I prefer to let someone else do that, but a writer’s round is a great place to test songs, and I’ve found that at writer’s rounds you find a lot of... writers..

Pulling some songs out of the sawdust, though, and trying to remember how some of them go. Wow. Its tougher than I thought it would be.

All in all, though, it feels good. I’m looking forward to floating them out there. No better way to get a feel for whether they work or not. No better way to improve the chops than by swinging the axe. (I’m a keyboard player, but I love using the analogy, anyways!)
<!--

On Saturday, met up at Kensington with the 4th week band and started rehearsal at 12:30. Saturday night service started at 5:30PM, and call time the next morning was 7:30 AM for the other three services.

We’re in the middle of a series on marriage and the theme for the weekend is Search Me Oh God. We had a great drama that starts out in divorce court, then flashes back to the the beginning of the end, and then again to the beginning of the marriage, revealing that the faults that each saw in each other at the end were there in the beginning.. in ourselves. Its the things in our lives that need to be purified, not the things in our spouses.

Music for the day: We opened with a song by the Plain White T’s called “1,2,3,4”, a schmarmy love song, complete with a melotron intro (That was fun). We played transitions for the drama with the song “Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop”, by Landon Pigg (the guitarist for Sixpence None The Richer.. he wrote Kiss Me). Coming out of the message we did a Danny Cox original (with Danny singing) called Search Me, Oh God.

To lighten up the whole “look in the mirror” idea of marriage we closed out with the Weezer tune. “I Want You To”. Renee Mulinicks and Chuck Jones did it as a duet. Sara Bareilles sang it as a duet with Weezer in this Jimmy Kimmel video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCmqtyAh8IM

What a blast!

I showed up with my M-Audio Ozonic and midi’d in the church’s Yamaha Motif. For sound bank, I used my MacBook Pro using Logic Studio’s Mainstage with Reason Rewired in. The Ozonic acts as my audio interface and midi controller, meaning I simply wire my stereo outs from the Ozonic to the board through a DI. The ozonic has to stereo’s out and Mainstage can send each instrument or patch to any output, so the routing can either be mixed by me or the board, depending on preference. The secondary output can be used to disperse a click track to the band, should I want to have a click or some other presentation running for video. Imagination is the limit...

On 1,2,3,4, for the Mellotron sound, I used the Reason Abbey Road Plugin mellotron flutes, with a tremolo affect to get the calliope feel, layered with a legato cello section so I could do the whole thing with 10 fingers or less.

For Falling In Love in a Coffee Shop, I used the Logic Mainstage Yamaha Studio Grand patch with the Blue Carpet pad layered underneath. To get the full affect to match the song, I added a tremolo to the Blue Carpet and took the volume down. To ensure that it didn’t get muddy under the piano, I mapped the low key just above middle C.

On the Weezer tune, I mainly clapped the song, except for the chorus where I used the mellotron patch from the first tune and played the melody up a third to create a common feel to the front and back end of the service.

I’m really liking Logic Mainstage as my instrument. For one thing, if the church or venue has a main midi keyboard its an easy load in, as the ozonic sets into place with one hand and a small zip-up keyboard case. The ozonic sits easily on most keyboards. On the motif, there’s room for the laptop, too.

Here’s a screen shot of Mainstage, showing the second song of the set:

Each time I play, I create a set for the date, (see February 28) program and title each song, and when the service starts I simply hit my up and down arrows on the keyboard, or a programmed button on my midi keyboard to move from one song (or multiple selections for complex songs) to the next.

You can see my song list on the left and note the sounds layered on the large keyboard. You can see the Blue Carpet is layered on the top section of the keyboard.

I’m even able to map layers with intensity, triggering layers of sound based upon how hard I hit the keys.

Anyways, after the the 4th service, I packed up the ozonic and my laptop and headed down to Grand River and Southfield to the Jerusalem Temple. Pastor Cal runs a church ministry for the mentally disabled, and our small group has gotten into the habit of bringing dinner for the congregation every few months. What a blessing it is to serve this congregation.

The church members participate in worship and the program, and it is really a treat to see so many members of this congregation participate in the service.

I’m always amazed at the need, but more so, the blessing every child of God gives to another. We had way too much food, but had plenty of take out boxes to pack and send home with each member of the congregation. We’ll be doing that again soon.

On the way back home, we stopped at the Oxford Inn in Royal Oak to see Jeff Scott’s CD release party. Turns out, it was sold out, but we were fortunate that a few people didn’t show up.. we sat with GW and Claudia of the Black Crystal Cafe in Ann Arbor. Bill Edwards opened up with some his great original songs. He played “What’d I do?” and “Leave It There”, two of my favorites. Duane Harlick’s band backed Jeff Scott for the rest of the evening. Duane’s amazing as his band. Jeff Scott’s a great writer. You’ll need to get your hands on his CD.

It was a great night, but if you’re counting, I hadn’t been home in 17 hours by the time it was over. I slept really good last night.

<!--

Not terrible, I guess. Better than 50/50. I should have required a higher standard. What’s odd, is that when you read the reviews, they are totally polarized. Witty / Stupid Hit / Flop. There seems to be no connect between the reviews. Its as if they’re talking about two different movies.

I think I figured out why.

It was a pretty funny premise. No one lies. Everyone tells the truth, in fact; Everyone is compelled to be brutally honest.. its their nature.

As a result, there are a lot of funny scene possibilities. Unfortunately, most of them are acted out in the first 10 minutes of the movie.

The first lie happens after the main character (played by Ricky Gervais) has lost his job and is evicted from his apartment because he doesn’t have the $800 for his rent. He goes to the bank to withdraw his last $300 so he can rent a truck and move his stuff out. The system is down and when asked how much is in his account, he is so obsessed with the $800 dollar figure he blurts it out. Conditioned that no one lies, the teller assumes that there is a mistake in the system and gives him the $800.

All is well and good until his mother is on her death bed, scared of an eternity of nothingness. Equipped with his new ability to lie, he tells her that she is in fact going to a good place and that she will see all her friends and her deceased husband.

Happy, she dies, but the entire hospital crew, who’s been listening, wants to know more.

The next day he returns home to find throngs of people on his front lawn, wanting to know where they go when they die, and the main character is revered like Moses. The people wait for his revelation.

He goes inside and spends some time, writing down his story. he thinks his scribblings look unimpressive, so he pastes them on the back of pizza boxes. He makes his way downstairs and reads out his 10 “facts” about the man in the sky who makes everything that is good and also makes everything is bad. But he makes more good things than bad things, so its ok.

So, the religious similarities are complete.

Ricky Gervais had an agenda. A self-avowed atheist, he took a pretty funny premise and used it to paint faith as a lie, cooked up to make people feel better about dying into an eternity of nothingness.

Now I know why the reviews are polarized.

As he read the 10 facts, and suspecting his agenda, I couldn’t help but be annoyed with their silliness, and how the crowd, portrayed as gullible, saw all the holes in the idea of a “man in the sky”. Ricky, improvised and although it took him 2 hours to get through the 10 FACTS, he became rich (another over-obvious cliche’ comparison to televangelists) and was immortalized in stain glass windows in churches where people go to “think about the man in the sky”.

The part that constantly annoys me (with these types of films), is the simplicity with which the arguments against faith are made, and the way in which multiple religions are kneaded together to create inconsistency and contradiction in their logic. But he’s the one making the movie, and he can do whatever he wants. He’s the guy with the script and the investors, and the popularity to at least float such a movie.

What annoys me more is that there are not more people of faith using the same arena to tell their stories. If they do, the standards are almost always lower. (Bruce Almighty, excluded) The dismissal of the arts and excellence in many segments of the church is at least partially responsible. Its a travesty that more people of faith aren’t well-versed in the theatrical arts and comedy writing. At least if we poke fun at the human race, we could do so with an accurate depiction of the elements of faith.

Back to the reviews. The movie premise was funny, but the plot was terrible and predictable. The schmarmy ending was one in which you instinctively turn to those with whom you’re watching with a face that says “That didn’t just happen, did it?” It was really bad writing and acting. If Ricky’s character had had more tension against him, the movie could have worked. As it turned out, he was revered throughout, and there was never the successful delivery of a moral. I guess its appropriate that a movie portraying faith as a lie has no moral.

So, the reviews? What was that about? How could there be 57% good reviews on this movie? Perhaps they liked the agenda, and it was funny for some to see faith bashed, even at the expense of the writing and acting.

As for the 43% of bad reviews, I suppose some of them didn’t like the agenda, but I’d have to assume most of them just wanted to see a good movie...

<!--

Oh? You're serious?

So I mentioned that I started leading a new small group 24/7 with Jesus series.

Sounded like a good idea. A good study for our group.

Well, this week we’re looking at Simplicity, Silence and Solitude. Great, right! I’ve written songs about silence and solitude, and how important it is; Even how scary it is. How we avoid silence, even when we’re getting ready for sleep and turn on Conan or Jimmy Kimmel to keep our minds busy while we drift off.

Silence is always a time when you hear things. Important things. Things you need to hear.. sometimes things you don’t want to hear. Maybe that has something to do with why we avoid it so aggressively...

Well, I’m prepping the lesson and the instructor (on the video) asks the question, of the 168 hours we have in a week, what do we need to change in order to free up 7 hours a week to train. 7 hours to be in silence and solitude with God.

7 HOURS!?! Wait a minute? Did I sign up for this? Surely there must be another way! Can’t we get a CD to play while we drive to work? Maybe we could buy some subliminal tapes to play while we sleep? Sure I want this, but.. 7 hours?

No one said anything about giving up things like TV watching, getting up early, saying no to stuff, just so I can free-up time to spend with God.

Hmmm? Wondering how this lesson’s going to go over with the group tonight?!? Based on my initial (if I’m being honest) reaction, I’m a little worried. : )

I’ll report back later.

T
<!--

The artist is a once-well-known recording artist. This artist had had huge successes back in the early 70’s and had been recording ever since. All in all, over 50 albums.

I set out to learn about the artist. Google is wonderful. From the articles and interviews I found, I learned that the artist had a love for horses. I read about the artists’ family and their history. I learned of recent projects and the genres they were targeted towards.

I googled photos of the artist and saw several album covers, promo shots, etc. I submitted a song that was not so much gospel as a song that spoke of a person of faith. It was forwarded and I pretty much forgot about the pitch for a few days.

Then a writer I work with, Jim Evans, sent me an email. I had mentioned the pitch to him and he had an idea for a song. What he sent me struck a chord and I went to work. The premise of Jim’s lyric was a classic theme, one that painted many pictures. I took that and what I had learned about the artists’ passions, family, and struggles and tried to paint a song about tradition, values, and redemption. I tried to write a lyric that would strike a chord with the artist, and yet be a song that could be universally understood.

I started with a classic gospel feel, but quickly reverted back to a hymn form. In fact, I originally had written a soaring bridge, but decided the hymn form made it feel as if it could have been written a century ago.

When it was ready to see the light of day, but I put down a piano track, sent it to my publisher. He brought in a Nashville fiddle player and sang the vocal.

Hope you enjoy it.

You can hear it here.

<!--

Not bad, really, but not very sweet. It wasn’t quite done ripening. It got me to thinking. When does ripening cross over to rotting?

Isn’t it interesting that the same process that does the ripening, without the harvest (or consumption), will eventually turn the fruit into mush.

I’m a firm (haha) believer that we as created beings cannot create anything, only take creation and rearrange it. Like the old joke about the scientist telling God he can create life, and then reaching for a pile of dirt to begin, God stops him and says, “Hey, make your own dirt”.

As a result, I see things like writing and melody creation as a series of puzzles with different pieces. We’ve got letters, and words, and notes and chords and ideas. We don’t create rhymes and emotional moments, we assemble them from our tool kit and inventories of old. Ideas aren’t created, they’re discovered. Melodies aren’t spun, they’re deciphered. Add the Holy Spirit and only then, true synergy happens. Something greater than the sum of the puzzle pieces.

I reminisce, fondly, of my green banana plucked from its ultimate potential, so early in life, only to become a poor-man’s brunch. I see another one ripening on the counter, and if protected from my a-peeling hands, one day it might be arbitrarily referred to as a rotten banana.

When will be at its optimum sweetness and firmness? One day it might be at the perfect state where it as sweet as it can be, and still firm enough to eat without triggering a repulsive reaction. Too early, and we’re cheated of the ultimate flavor; The design standard! Too late, and were deprived altogether.

I can’t help but assume that there’s a word picture there. Another clue to this never ending puzzle we call life.

Or... its just a banana?
<!--

I always think its strange that the two are sometimes presented as polar opposites.

Here is part of Chuck’s response that seem applicable to songwriting:

Chuck Cannon commented on his status:

I am a songwriter.

I have no idea what I am going to write next. I can be in the middle of a song and have no idea what the next line is going to be. I have no way of "knowing" if the lines I write are the right ones.

But I have "faith" that I can write songs. That faith has been supported by "reason" ... I have actually made money writing songs and have had people (besides friends and family) tell me my songs are good.

But the only way I will ever write another one is to have faith that I can ...

If I just sit on my ass and have "faith" nothing will happen. (Yes, I have empirical evidence!) So I spend an enormous amount of time reading ... looking for ideas. I write off movie tickets because I find so many ideas there ... I listen to people and how they say things ... what they love ... who they love ... what they believe ...

But once I'm in the middle of a song, "reason" plays a huge role ... I analyze ... I use dictionaries, a thesaurus, quotation books ... my old harmony textbooks for musical ideas ... different instruments ... different co-writers ...

poets and mathematicians ...

they are both at work in my brain ...

so faith and reason feed on each other in my world all the time ... i bet in your world too ...

and tomorrow I can get up and crank my tractor and move some gravel around on my driveway or I can stay right here in my studio and see if a song shows up ...

fate has brought me to this moment of choice ...

and my choices have brought me to this fate ...

Peace ~ Chuck"
<!--

We recently started working on a song, and I’ve been pretty remiss in working on it. I wanted to tell her I’ve been thinking about it, which I have, but to be honest, not that much.

In the process of the conversation, I told her I had another idea for a worship song. No title, not even a hook; Only an idea.

The idea is coming together in authenticity. Real with one another in the Church. Maybe that doesn’t sound like a new idea, but I’ve been feeling led to write it.

I love working with Eva. She’s a walking, talking, emailing vessel of the Holy Spirit. We bounced a few ideas back and forth and she said she’d pray about it and write down some ideas.

At that moment I had a thought and typed two words in the box and hit send “Paper Saints”.

She replied, “tell me about that. I replied something like, ”not real saints, just 2 dimensional cut-outs of what a saint is supposed to look like“.

She started a file and just before I went back to work, I typed this into the file:

We come with needs unspoken
for fear of being exposed
And though the circle be unbroken
we unfold into an army of paper saints.

That evening, I sat at he piano and started playing around.. 5 minutes later I had a chorus. I went online and opened the file. She had copied my im onto the page and had started a verse.

I started typing.. she came online and she started praying.. then the words flowed, and by Friday morning, most of the lyric was done. I went in the studio on Saturday morning.. and by the next day we had a work tape done.

I gotta tell you, when the Holy Spirit is on board, writing the song’s just a matter of holding the pen, laying your hand on the keyboard, and most importantly, getting out of the way.

If you’d like to give it a listen, you can check it out here.
<!--

Before sunrise. Dark-thirty. I flipped on the radio.. NPR.. talk-interview show. Some guy was explaining his take on the meaning of life. Between my thoughts of “I need coffee” and “where am I?”, I started listening to the conversation. The guy was saying, “...the important question to ask and answer about anything you do is, ‘Why?’ ”

Now, unless you’ve never contemplated the meaning of life before, you know this is the pertinent question. I’ve asked it many times as I sat down to plan. The 5 year plan. The career plan. The family plan.. The house plan...

It’s important, I get it.

But in the middle of my pompous, eye-rolling-head-nod, it suddenly dawned on me that in many areas of my life I had gone a long time without revisiting that question.

Why do I work where I work? Why do I do what I do? Why do I live where I live? Why? Why? Why?

Sure, I asked these questions at critical times when I started my job, nurtured my job skills, was house-hunting, etc.

It rarely occurs to me that I need to revisit those areas (and other areas) and ask the question again.

In Michigan, there are many people who are having to ask these questions again, out of necessity. In other words, the are looking for new jobs, careers, and houses.. because they lost the ones they had.

For myself, I still have a job, a career, a house.. but are the reasons I chose them still the same as today’s reasons?

Answer: NO!

Time to re-evaluate.. in fact, its always time to re-evaluate... actually, maybe its the wrong word... The word evaluate indicates something that can be accomplished, and I’m beginning to wonder if the process is much more dynamic than I ever assumed..

Use me while you can.

<!--

Natural vs. Miraculous?

I was reading today a quote that said there is nothing paranormal except our limited knowledge of nature. That’s what the quote said..

I can relate to that statement because of an experience I had a few years ago.

You may remember an asteroid belt that ended up flying through our atmosphere a few years back. Many got up and laid outside in the early morning to watch it go through the atmosphere.

I was driving about 5 miles south of my house, in broad daylight, when something caught my eye to the left. I turned my head in time to see a fireball in the sky. Thing is, it appeared to be the size of the Sun (my perspective).

But this was not normal.. it was paranormal. Here’s why. It was high in the atmosphere, so it was quite large, but it was moving across the sky as if it were a jet 200 feet above the ground.

It lasted 2 seconds at most.. took 2 seconds to fly from the horizon on my left to the horizon on my right. So fast, in fact, that by the time everyone in the car looked it was gone.

My idea of normal was shattered. It laid in pieces on the floor of that minivan.

Seriously, Up to this time, the nearest I’d come to Paranormal was Teflon®. (I mean, how is that surface dry yet feel wet? It has to dry out eventually, right? Just sayin’...)

As a Christian I’ve heard (and talked) about miraculous things all my life. Friends who are healed from a non-operable cancer. People who testify of an Angel’s presence who led them through a mind-field. Miraculous circumstances that freed people from prison.

All those things. You know, when we feel God’s presence. We ‘see’ Him working in people’s lives.

But Paranormal? Physical aberrations that seem impossible? Something you can touch? Aren’t these things paranormal? Why don’t these miraculous things of the faith amaze me.. humble me.. bring me to my knees?

Have I become numb to the supernatural, because its not paranormal? I’ve realized that I’m pretty much still a skeptic to these things. I’m a Thomas. A doubter. Do people really see these things? Are they using them as a way to make their story more significant or impacting? Were those people really healed or just misdiagnosed to begin with.

Even as I write this I have a fear coursing through my arm that people are going to be disappointed in me for expressing these feelings... that I’m somehow not holding up my end of the story. I’m not trusting in what people tell me, or that I’m denying the working, maybe even the existence of God.

I don’t. I know what I know. I feel what I feel. I’m a witness to his miraculous hand in my life and others... but unless I remind myself that those things I know, feel, and witness are not natural, ordinary things, I begin to classify them as normal, and they become something I take for granted, or worse something I don’t even recognize as the hand of God working in my life and the life of others.

Then I see a fireball the size of a football field rocket 1,000 miles in 2 seconds and realize how small I am in this unbelievable, ordered creation and I realize that there is nothing miraculous except my limited knowledge of God’s omnipotent hand at the wheel of His creation. My limited recognition of His incomprehensible love for us and His desire to have us be an integral part of its fruition.

<!--

Writers and publishers are compensated, but the owners of the recordings are not.

To my knowledge, the royalty is 1/2 cent per play, to be added to the current royalty to then be distributed to the artists.

The NAB response is that local radio stations can not afford such an increase, and would have to suspend local news coverage, weather and all kinds of other services just to pay these (inferred greedy) artists for the use of their music. They even created the phrase PERFORMANCE TAX to gather public opinion against it.

Well, lets do some math.
If a radio station plays 15 songs an hour (I challenge you to find one that plays that many), 168 hours a week, 4.3 weeks a month.. or 10,836 songs a month.

10,836 songs a month! That’s a lot of songs.. That sounds like a lot of money, right?

At 1/2 cent each... the bill comes to $54.18 a month.

If an artist’s music helps to generate an audience... which sells advertising... which pays the bills, don’t you think that artist should get a penny every couple times his song gets played?

If there’s a better and cheaper way for a station to generate listeners, I say they should go for it. Music sounds like a bargain, to me.

Seriously. How much bad news do we have to give up for 55 bucks a month?

<!--

(and its not because I drank too much water before bed)

I’ve been waking up with lines and couplets. Ideas and rhymes. A few nights ago I woke up and thought, that’s a great idea. I’ll remember that. I didn’t even need to get up and write it down, it was that good. Good thing, because I was at a hotel and I didn’t have my notepad next to me..

I forgot the idea by the time I woke up again.

Try as I might, I’m still lamenting the loss of that idea. I’ve got so much to write down, so this will be a long entry.

The last week and a half have been great. I left early on Thursday morning and drove to St. Charles, MO for the Write About Jesus conference. Like going back to a small country church. (only with great music) Ran in to many old friends and some new ones from last year. Had some great classes, a cowrite attempt, and a great one on one with Dave Clark.

This summer has been pretty dry for my writing. When my nephew was murdered in the the spring, my writing took a pretty dark turn. When I got out to Vegas for the memorial service, they had just captured a suspect that is almost certain to be the murderer. The grief and the anger that surrounds the next 3 days put me in a strange place. I had a lot of things show up on the page, but nothing seemed to make sense.

Out of this, however, I wrote a song called “That’s Why They Call It Amazing”. I decided to submit it for the Conference competition. I was fortunate to place as the runner-up for the weekend.

On Sunday I drove in to Nashville and checked into the Hit Song Casa near the airport (Great deal, by the way, Songwriters) only to realize my cowrite that evening was in Clarksville (which I went through 40 miles earlier.. ughh) Drove out, though, and met David Walker, and over take out Chinese, we wrote for the evening. Good to see David again.

Monday morning I met up with Gene Reynolds. We’d talked online, but had never met. Turns out he’s a church planter and a Moody Graduate. We met for coffee and drove to his place and started a song. Had lunch and I drove in for a meeting at ASCAP. That evening, I had gotten tickets for he Amy Grant / Take 6 taping for the Armed Services Christmas show at the Grand Ol’ Opry. Great show featuring the Army Reserve Orchestra, the Air Force Strings. It will air on the Armed Forces Network, starting on Christmas Eve.

After the taping I drove over to the Mercy Lounge on Cannery Row just in time to see Tyler James kick off a multi-date tour through the south. He’s previewing his new CD online here if you’d like to give it a listen. Great stuff. It was good to talk with Tyler about the CD and catch up.

Tuesday morning I drove out and met Chuck Butler at his studio in Franklin. I had an idea for a song and Chuck and I spent the morning nailing down the melody and form. Chuck suggested I accompany him to a vocal recording session that afternoon, but I had had a lunch meeting scheduled with a writer who was a mutual friend of some of my co-writers. Within a few minutes, though, I received a call to let me know that the writer had called in sick with the flu. So we Chuck and I grabbed lunch and headed over to the Brentwood Benson studios to meet Michael Fordinal and cut a vocal for a song that he and Chuck had written. Good tune guys... and yes, Chuck has a mohawk.

Tuesday night, on the way to meet Dennis Dearing at his studio in Franklin, I ran through a inordinately short yellow light and got pulled over by on of Franklin’s finest. The most repentant spirt and largest puppy-dog eyes proved fruitless and I will be helping to reduce the Franklin City budget deficit in the near future.

Anyhow, I made it to Dennis Dearing’s place to see what all the hubbub was about. What a great guy, and a nice studio. Really good stuff, from a guy who’s spirit is one of the most giving I have experienced. I hope we get a chance to work together soon. You can check out his studio here.

Wednesday morning, I met again with Gene Reynolds and we resumed our work on a great song.. discovering a great aha moment that neither of us saw coming. Skip Adams from Global Graffiti, who introduced us, listened the worktape and it looks like this one will get signed.

Wednesday night I drove up North of Nashville to Craig Winquist’s home. Adam Olson, who used to work with Giant Slayers Publishing had introduced us a few year ago, but we’d never gotten together. Kari, his wife took time from caring for her newborn son and 3 year old son, Caden and cooked us up a great homemade Chicken noodle Soup (yum) and a Walnut-Topped Apple Crisp. Kudos to the Winquist family for giving me my first home-cooked meal in Nashville. I’m going to write with Craig again!) After dinner, we went out to Craig’s writing room and we started a deep one. I love Craig’s spirit and his heart for God and great country music. I need to get back soon and finish that one. By the way, he showed me his cherry 1964 Galaxie that he trailered down from South Dakota. Sweet.

Thursday morning never got booked so I got up and planned to write on my own. The writer who had cancelled on Tuesday, however, called and asked if I wanted to get lunch. I drove into meet him where he’s currently working on Music Row and picked him up. We went to have lunch and in our conversation I said something that sparked an idea between us. We went back to his publisher’s writing room and wrote a great song. When we were done, he called upstairs and said, “ I think we wrote one that doesn’t suck”. His publisher came down and we played it for him. He had us make a change and then called and had his plugger come down and listen. He asked us to do a guitar demo and he’s going to start playing it around town! At some later I’ll tell you who the writer is and where he’s writing. That is a whole story in itself.

Thursday night I drove out to Whit and Al Hill’s place and had my second home-cooked meal of the trip. Whit and I started a song based on an idea I stole from something Gene said to a friend when he was on the phone. (Thanks Gene.. ha ha!)

When we were done (around 10) and I drove in to the airport and picked up Cyndi. It was so good to see her again.

On Friday morning we slept in and drove into downtown Nashville for lunch. Jack’s Barbeque is a tradition for us (AWESOME and cheap!) We checked into our hotel (thanks TOUR CONNECTION) and then drove out to the salon where Cyndi had a hair appointment. She looked great. Now I have an excuse for us to come once a month!

The 2nd Round of songwriters in the round at the Commodore. Left is Patty and Rick Stewart, Joel Shoemake, and Craig Winquist (It’s Halloween, in case you’re wondering.)

Friday night I drove out to see Craig Winquist play a round at the Commodore on West End. Craig’s a great performer. Craig also let me in on the history of the publisher who owns the office where I’d written on Thursday. He looked at me and said, “You’ve Had a Good Week!” I concurred. It’d been a great week. One of providence. I could feel God at work.

Saturday morning, Cyndi and I spent the morning at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wow! I wasn’t expecting to be so moved. I’d put if off for a couple of trips, but it was pretty overwhelming. Gary Harrison (Strawberry Wine, and I Hate Everything, and hundreds more) did a small concert and Q&A) Afterwards, we drove out to Lebanon to meet Skip Adams an his wife Teri a their horse ranch. They had literally moved in on Wednesday afternoon. I played some stuff for Skip and we talked business for awhile.

Finally we drove down to Cornersville to see some old friends. They have a hundred acres on a ‘holler’ on a running stream. I got lost in the country as my cel phone reception sketched in and out of service. Finally, I was able to find the place (without Cyndi killing me for being so stubborn about directions) and spent the rest of the night around a campfire with our friends from Huntsville. We drove back to Nashville and slept in before leaving around 10 for Detroit.

So here I am. I’m looking forward to getting back in the grind, and seeing what God will do with the fruits of the trip. They are His. I saw Him work so many times during the visit. He is good. He is so good! I am excited to see what He has in store.
<!--

They play it, and people listen. (or at least advertisers think so)

Artists and writers can't stand most of it, of course, but the market exists, and it comes with formulaic risk that is easily exploited by the accountants and execs.

Pop culture will always exist, and it will rarely be pretty, and will almost always be laughable and/or forgotten in hindsight, but as long as people will put up with them, 30 second hits are not going away.

There will always be someone willing to whip up what the customer will consume.

I'm reminded of a quote from Henry Ford. When asked about giving the customers what they want, he replied, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said 'Faster Horses'.

People and labels may think they want more drivel (uptempo horses), but what people really want is a way to extract themselves from reality and for that, the current drivel and vacuum-packed productions deliver! Even we, as artists, have to admit we’re distracted from reality as we contemplate how such a mindless song ever made it to the airwaves.

Unless presented with a different destination and a compelling vehicle to get them there, the consumer will continue to shovel all the hay and manure the label’s hit-farms have to offer.

Songwriters.
