Our QoMEX2010 paper 'Improving the Quality of Multimedia Experience through Sensory Effects' has been accepted!

Title: Improving the Quality of Multimedia Experience through Sensory Effects
Abstract: In previous and related work sensory effects are presented as a tool for increasing the user experience of multimedia presentation by stimulating also other senses than vision or audition. In this paper we primarily investigated the influence of multimedia content annotated with sensory effects (e.g., wind, vibration, light) on various video bit-rates and qualities. Therefore, we defined a subjective quality assessment methodology based on standardized methods. The paper describes the test environment, its setup, and conditions in detail. Furthermore, we experimented with a novel voting device that allows for continuous voting feedback during a sequence in addition to the overall quality voting at the end of each sequence. The results obtained from the subjective quality assessment are presented and discussed thoroughly. In anticipation of the results we can report – without doubt – an improvement of the quality of the multimedia experience thanks to the sensory effects.

Our paper "Novel Architecture for Multimedia Distribution based on Content Aware Networking" has been accepted at CTRQ 2010

Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel virtual Content Aware Network (CAN) layer as a part of a full layered architecture, focused, but not limited, to multimedia distribution with quality of services assurance. The overall system is based on a flexible cooperation between providers, operators and end-users, enabling users to access the offered multimedia services in various contexts and also to become private content providers. The paper introduces the main concepts and architecture for the main virtual network layer (CAN), exposing its role and interfaces among overall system layers. This work is a part of the starting effort inside of a new European research FP7 IP project, ALICANTE.

September 2010 - Lisbon, Portugal

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Scalable Video Coding (SVC) refers to the possibility of
removing certain parts of a video bit stream in order to adapt it to a
changing usage environment, e.g., end device capabilities, network
condition or user preferences. SVC has been an active standardization
and research area for at least 20 years, reaching back to H.262/MPEG-2,
which offered scalable profiles. However, these previous attempts
suffered from a significant loss in coding efficiency as well as a
large increase in decoder complexity (and thus energy consumption),
which hindered market adoption. Only the most recent attempt, i.e., the
SVC extension of H.264/AVC, focuses on avoiding these disadvantages.
Since H.264/SVC standardization started in 2003, it has been at the
focus of many multimedia research groups.

Today’s increasing variety of end devices (smart phones,
tablet PCs, Netbooks, Laptops, PCs, networked HDTVs, …) and the
associated multitude of Internet connectivity options (GPRS/EDGE, UMTS,
ADSL, PLC, WiMAX, …) provide particular momentum for SVC, which can be
easily and pervasively adapted to these various usage environments. SVC
also allows end devices to only decode a sub-set of the SVC bit
stream, thus enabling in particular mobile end devices to minimize the
necessary (processing) power requirements.

This workshop aims to provide a forum for both academic
and industrial participants to exchange and discuss recent advancements
and future perspectives of SVC.

SVC topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:

Robust streaming, error resilience and error

Energy-efficient video distribution

Content adaptation (e.g., scaling, rewriting,
Christian Timmerer and Mathias Lux

The aim of this tutorial is to give an overview about MPEG metadata
formats enabling the development and deployment of content- and
context-aware multimedia applications. It is important to note that
these metadata formats will not only be addressed theoretically but
also by means of concrete use case scenarios and comprehensive
examples. Additionally, these concepts will be demonstrated by
prototype software implementations.
