I finally broke down and ordered an Amazon Kindle, now that they're back in stock. It's an ebook reader device, and since I read so much (borderline obsession), and there are growning piles of dead tree versions of books all over my house, I figured a Kindle was a good idea.

In this video, we go over the packaging, basic functions of the device, discuss its wireless features, have a look at the fabulous (dare I say revolutionary?) electronic ink screen, and generally check out the new gadget.

Camera help and cameo appearances by my wife Rachel and our son Gabe.

I'll be posting more thoughts as I use the Kindle more (I've had it less than 24 hours), but the verdict so far is: I LOVE this thing! I only wish I hadn't had to wait so long for Amazon to get them back in stock.

Video: Deepfish Mobile Web Browser

Here's a 17 minute video I shot today showing off Deepfish, a new mobile web browser from Microsoft's "Live Labs". The video shows how Deepfish doesn't try to squash normal-sized web pages onto your mobile device's screen, but instead lets you scroll and pan smoothly, and zoom in to the parts of the page you want to read.

I also compare Deepfish to the default Pocket IE browser that comes with all Windows Mobile devices, so you can see what really makes it different.

This is a beta/tech preview of Deepfish, so there are some rough edges, but it's a very cool technology - similar to the mobile Safari browser that Steve Jobs showed off on the iPhone.

You can find out more about Deepfish, and sign up to be a tester at labs.live.com/Deepfish/. There's also another video overview on Microsoft's Channel 10.

This video was shot with my Canon XH A1 HDV camcorder at 1080i, then edited in Apple iMovie 6 HD and exported as a 320x240 Quicktime video file. It weighs in at 312 MB, and was cropped from 16:9 widescreen to standard 4:3 aspect ratio (and I chopped off the sides of some of the titles/credits in the process - oops!).

Video: Running Windows Vista on the Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC

As promised, here's a 30 minute video of Windows Vista (the final RTM version, Ultimate flavor) running on my Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC. The file is about 180MB, formatted for iPod in iMovie (but it should work just fine anywhere).

I shot the video on the day after Thanksgiving, at my wife's parents' house. I cover the installation process (went smooth), what worked right out of the gate (surprisingly, almost everything), what required some extra tweaking and driver installation (WiFi, etc.). Lots of general usage, including some appearances by OneNote 2007 and using Word 2007 to post to my blog.

I've since gone back to Windows XP - I talk about the reasons in depth on the video. Nothing major, but a combination of small quirks that I'm confident will be fixed down the line with driver and software updates from Asus.

Video: Unboxing the Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)

Having been lovingly introduced to the world of the Ultra Mobile PC (hereafter UMPC) by getting to play with a Samsung Q1 for a week, I made arrangements to get a UMPC for myself (I do IT support for my brother's moving company, Wright-Way Moving & Storage, in Seattle, and he's interested in trying UMPCs out for his sales staff).

I chose the Asus R2H over the Samsung Q1 and others, because is has more RAM, a bigger hard drive, an SD slot, a camera, and GPS, for the same price.

Here is the Unboxing Ceremony video of the R2H - from very beginning, to getting everything plugged in and up and running. I cover all of the in-box accessories (which vary from country to country), and try to get as in-detail as possible. Lots of closeups, and some personality thrown in courtesy of my 3 year old daughter Emma, and my lovely wife Rachel manning the camera for the first half.

I ordered the two UMPCs from ProPortable, and their service was excellent. Not only were they practially the only ones to have these relatively new devices in stock, Sean in sales was very responsive to my emails, and the founder, Justin, is active in various Tablet PC and laptop forum communities. And you'll see how well they packed the UMPCs for shipping in the video. I highly recommend them for your UMPC and laptop needs. Video: Model Rockets

Here is a little video collage of 5 or 6 model rocket launches that I did with our Cub Scout pack a couple of weeks ago. The camera was mounted on a tripod, and I sifted through about 45 minutes of footage to capture these good parts. End result is about a minute and a half long, 14.5 MB.

It started getting dark, but that made the fiery launches that much more impressive.

Of 4 rockets, we suffered two losses - one small one of mine, and one of the Scout's were lost into a neighboring orchard. My big "Fat Boy" rocket flew successfully twice. This is the one that I'm going to modify to include the CVS digital camcorder, as seen in Make Magazine #7 - expect more cool rocket footage as soon as I get that done! :-)

It started out as wanting to film Emma reading a bedtime story with Daddy - "Yummy Yucky". She's a very good "reader" for a three and a half year old.

The best part is about 1 minute in, where we get to the "Burgers are Yummy, Boogers are Yucky" page. We've been trying to teach her the latter concept lately, but it's obviously not working. :-)

Video: Entering Portland on the Fremont Bridge

You know how there's a place when you're driving back to your town after a trip when you just feel "this is home"? No? Maybe I'm the only one, but I love seeing Portland from this section of the Fremont bridge, coming from the north, on I-405. The bridge is beautiful, you can see forever in all directions, the river, etc.

I always love this video, so I shot a minute or so of video coming home from the airport on Saturday. I shot the video at 60 fps on my Canon SD700, but I transcoded the video the .MOV using iSquint, so I don't know if it preserved the framerate.

Anyway, check out a glimpse of the town that I consider "home". :-)

Video: Bomb Sniffing Dog Demonstration

On Saturday, we took the Cub Scouts to Young American Day at the Portland Air National Guard base, adjacent to PDX airport. They had all the planes out to walk around and look at, as well as lots of fire and police trucks for the kids to climb around and play on.

This was a demo of one of the Port of Portland's bomb sniffing dogs. The officer explained how the dog is trained, and what she does, and then gave us this demo. The video is about a minute and a half long, and it's pretty cool. The kids all loved it! :-)

Wikimania 2006: David Weinberger cracks up the crowd

On the last day of Wikimana 2006 at Harvard Law School, Cluetrain author and internet savant David Weinberger cracked up the crowd at the beginning of his presentation with a hilarious spoof of Lawrence Lessig's to-the-millisecond timed PowerPoint speech. I missed the first few seconds of it, but I managed to get most of it on video. The slides contain one or two words that might be objectionable, so close your eyes during those parts. :-)

Jason Calacanis asked a pointed question of Yochai Benkler, after his session on The Wealth of Networks, about some people getting paid for Free Open Source Software (like the Mozilla Foundation, Wikipedia, etc.), and the disparity that creates between them and the people that still contribute for free.

This sparked a lively discussion, which continued after Yochai's session was over. I happened to be nearby to shoot this video. Not sure if the audio is going to be clear enough, but here you go anyway...

Video: I accidentally reinstalled Mac OS X trying to install X11.app

All I wanted to do was run a cool little Windows app called autostitch on my Mac. According to the site, it runs fine under Wine. "OK," I think to myself, "I've been meaning to install Darwine for a while." So I get and install Darwine, and it complains that X11.app isn't installed.

Should be pretty easy to fix, no? Guess again. There's a HUGE documentation problem/gap here. Watch the video to see how I went from wanting to run Darwine to unintentionally reinstalling OS X on my Mac mini. *sigh*

The (sort of) good news is that an hour and half later, my Mac is back up, and all of my apps and files are right where I left them. I have to install about 500MB of updates via Software Update, but it could have been a whole lot worse.

Oh, and X11.app still isn't installed. And I still can't run Darwine or autostitch.

We got Emma one of those little wading pools, because it's been so hot lately. She won't sit down in it, and get completely wet (the water's too cold!), but she loves to walk around and splash in it. And woe to the bug that gets in her pool! :-)

Video - Bloglines integrates streaming audio player for podcast feeds

I noticed in the last day or so that podcast feeds that I'm subscribed to in Bloglines now have a little Flash streaming player link next to the traditional "enclosure" download link. Click on the play button, and it begins streaming the MP3 file immediately. Very cool for previewing a podcast before you subscribe.

I decided to shoot and post this video to play with blip.tv and my new Canon SD700 camera a little more, so let me know what you think. I know that the focus is messed up on this video, and I'll try to fix that in the future. All other feedback is welcome! :-)
