Make your baby a Thinkbaby!

It's summer and your baby needs to be protected from the harmful rays. You can do your best, but how do you know what is best? Thinkbaby explains why their sunscreen is different and should perhaps be your choice sunscreen this summer.

How is the Thinkbaby and Thinksport different?

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is highly effective, falls into the highest category for water resistance and has a sensible SPF 50+ rating. A quick look on your local drugstore shelf will show an increasing number of chemical sunscreens boasting ultra-high SPFs of 70 and greater. An SPF higher than SPF 30 offers only minimal improvement in sun protection and does not provide insight into its ability to protect for both UVA and UVB. Instead, these ultra-high SPFs are inflated through the use of chemical UV absorbers. The FDA has recently ruled that SPF numbers above 50 are not allowed. They have also ruled the terms "Sweatproof" and "Waterproof" as false claims.

You should know that the effective difference between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is approximately 2.5% difference. Don’t be misled by ultra-high SPF numbers.

Additionally, Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreens utilize average zinc oxide particles greater than 110nm. Kevin Brodwick, founder of Thinkbaby and Thinksport explains why: “We always use the precautionary principle and as we expect the debate on the safety of nano particles to continue, we asked a simple question: Does the product have to contain nano particles to be an effective sunscreen? The answer is, quite simply, "NO"!

We also do not and won’t use aerosol dispensers, nor should you. Scientists have shown that parents apply 25% of the correct amount when using aerosol. As the SPF is actually a logarithmic function, if you are applying a SPF 100, you’re actually only putting on SPF equivalent of 3. More importantly, there is significant concern that children and parents are inhaling the particulates. If you look at the ingredients in aerosol sunscreens, you’ll quickly determine why you don’t want to breathe it.

How do I use Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen?

Applying Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen

Children over the age of 6 months and anyone who will be exposed to sunlight should use sunscreen.

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is perfect for daily use and for anyone spending time in the sun, including pregnant women, children over 6 months, and anyone with sensitive skin. Please note that use of sunscreen on children younger than 6 months of age requires a doctor's prescription. This is true for ALL brands.

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is a physical sunscreen which means it works immediately upon application. It is not necessary to apply 30 minutes before you are exposed to sunlight as is the case with chemical sunscreens. Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is classified as “water resistant - 80 minutes.” This is the FDA’s highest possible rating. It will maintain its SPF after 80 minutes of water immersion. The Environmental Working Group recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours.

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is perfect for sensitive skin. We recommend testing on a small area of the body to ensure that you don't have any sensitivities.

Sunscreens that claim to be hypo-allergenic are nothing more than marketing hype in our opinion. As the population's exposure to chemicals has risen, there has been a direct correlation to things that people become allergic to. Simply google environmental exposure and allergies to view some of this research.

Tips for Application

Thinkbaby and Thinksport formula applies easily and absorbs quickly. Be sure to apply all areas that will be exposed to sunlight, including behind the ears, neck, hands, feet, and scalp. Reapply every two hours or more as needed. While the sunscreen applies very easily, we recommend not spreading it too thin. Otherwise you will decrease the effectiveness of the sunscreen. Keep in mind that physical sunscreens work by reflecting sunlight.

What else you might want to know....

The difference between physical and chemical sunscreens

Physical (or mineral) sunscreens work by protecting the skin with a physical barrier on top of the skin. Mineral sunscreens contain an active ingredient of either zinc or titanium oxide. Thinkbaby sunscreen has the active ingredient of zinc oxide. Chemical sunscreens penetrate the skin and are absorbed into the blood stream. Active ingredients such as oxybenzone are found in chemical sunscreens and can act as endocrine disruptors in the body.

The truth about SPF ratings

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen is rated SPF 50+. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends children over 6 months and adults use a sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher. Some chemical sunscreens advertise SPF ratings as high as 100, however, the FDA revisited the system and set the upper limit to SPF 50 for 2012. The rating system as it stands causes more misperceptions than it solves. In short, sunscreens with very high SPF ratings do not provide better protection than a SPF 30 in relative terms. It’s important to note that the current SPF rating system does not rate UVA; it only rates UVB. Dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB exposure. UVB is what commonly is associated with causing sunburn and free radical generation. Where UVA has been linked to skin damage and even more serious potential for free radical generation.

About nanoparticles

In sunscreen, nano particles refer to 0 micron to 1 microns or 1 to 100 nanometers. We acquire 100> nm size zno. There is concern within the scientific community that very small particle sizes may affect biological processes. Nanoparticles can easily pass through the epidermis and therefore could interact at the cellular level. To our knowledge there hasn’t been any direct statements that have concluded what sizes are safe and which are not. But in the general category of nanoparticles there is concern not just for babies but their general use. They could have the potential for greater disruption for infants, whose bodies are going through significant development. This is the same concern that scientists have in relation to what harmful chemicals pose on infants. The challenge surrounds on how to do testing. It certainly wouldn’t be advisable to conduct testing on babies or animal studies. So they will have to be done on cells to see their potential to interact and then we’ll have to extrapolate whether there would be similar concern within our biological systems. We can only theorize at this point that very small particles could disrupt cellular mechanisms that are very sensitive. There is not significant enough research to conclude that nano particles are safe. You will not find a legitimate researcher to agree that there is enough knowledge at this point and the testing is complex. We specifically utilize larger particle zinc oxide.

Packaging

Thinkbaby and Thinksport sunscreen comes in 3oz tube made of environmentally friendly packaging that does not contain BPA, vinyl, or phthalates. The packaging and contents are environmentally safe.

Each tube is marked with an expiration date.

Note: The base formulations of our sunscreens are identical. We set out to make the most effective safe sunscreen possible. It didn’t make sense to make one safe for babies, and a harmful version for adults. While this seems obvious, you should check out what the major brands are doing….

The Diva Cup

I was interested in this product because I liked the idea of a zero waste period. I did some research on the ingredients in pads and tampons and how they negatively effect the body and I was horrified. I realized a menstrual cup was the best option. I picked the Diva Cup because this brand is the easiest to find, it is located in many natural health food stores. It took me about 3 cycles to figure out how to insert and take out properly, and it was worth it! What I love about the cup is that if I am expecting my period, but I know I will be out and about all of that day, I can simply put it in and check it later. This is so much easier than packing tampons, putting a liner on and getting ready to rush off to the bathroom when it comes! Another great thing about it; it doesn’t dry you out… tampons are so painful when you pull them out when they are too dry, they can also leave behind pieces of cotton and scratch up your insides. Another great thing about the cup, is that my cramps are a lot less intense, I think this is because silicone is bio-compatible with the body - unlike tampons where the most sensitive part of my body is being exposed to materials that it shouldn't be exposed to.

Learning how to use the cup when you are a virgin can be a little tricky. The best way for me to get comfortable with inserting was to relax, breathe, and take my time. If something started hurting, i would stop, take it out and try again the next day. Eventually this process became easier and quicker and now my body is used to the cup. The Diva Cup should never hurt, it is very comfortable to wear when it is in properly, and you do not have to be concerned about leaking. The Diva Cup has taken away so much stress that comes along with periods. It also takes up very little space compared to all the tampons I normally stocked up on. I highly recommend doing some research on disposables products vs reusable products, and consider making the switch! It is so much better for your body, the earth and your wallet.

Bummis Reusable Menstrual Pads:

I bought the smallest size of The Bummis pads - the pantyliners. If you are passionate about the environment then this is a great step to take to reduce your waste! They are a little thicker than many pantyliners as there is a snap at the bottom which goes around the crotch of your underwear so they stay in place. The small size of The Bummis does not feel too thick, the cotton makes it very comfortable. It simply feels like a small extra layer of underwear, as long as there is not too much moisture in the liner. I like pairing the panty liners with my Diva Cup on heavier days, and for some other days during the month. Generally, I will only wear one pantyliner in a day so I do no have to worry about changing in a public restroom and dealing with a wet bag. I think they would be a great thing to stock up on and I am hoping to fully make a switch from disposables to reusables. If you do not want to fully commit to only using reusables they are a great product to try on days when you will only need one a day.

The feather print was in stock too - but it disappeared pretty quickly! Well, peeps - Pam is doing it again. Adding even more wonderful NEW products to our TTH shop. I wanted to give a quick re-cap on the newest items so you're sure to not miss anything!

For a few weeks now, we've been stocking Acorn and Leaf bandana bibs - and let me tell you, these are moving quickly! We have a wide variety of patterns to choose from, and they are available in singles or ready-made packages of 3. These make a great gift - or a simple and fashionable addition to your own child's outfit! More arriving this week!

Thirsties One Size Pocket Diaper Review

Thanks to Tina M for trying out the Thirsties One Size Pocket Diapers and writing up a review for us! Here is what Tina has to say about her experience!

Likes:
- No leaks, not even with a newborn breast fed poo-splosion (I used some disposables during this period and it would always end in a blow out).
- The double leg gusset definitely helps with the no-leaking.
- My son is already a heavy wetter and I found this diaper to be very absorbent.
- Cute print(s) (I purchased Scottish Storm).
- Easy to wash, and doesn't take long to dry.

Dislikes:
- It can sometimes be tough to snap the diaper on a wriggly newborn. This is where I can see velcro would be a little easier, but when baby is older, they can undo the velcro a lot easier than the snaps.
- As most cloth diapers, they can be a little bulky for a newborn, even on the smallest snaps.
- I find the pocket really narrow to stuff the insert. I personally don't like the opening on both ends of the diaper for the insert (but you don't have to remove the insert before throwing it into the wash, it agitates out on its own).
- The gussets are white, and with the yellow newborn poo, it stains (hung outside in the sun, still has a light stain).

Wash Routine: My diapers are washed using an HE LG front loader. I rinse on delicate. I use regular powdered Tide detergent at line 3 of the scoop included in the box. I wash on a regular cycle, hot, with extra water (button on machine). I then rinse and extra rinse on delicate. I then either line dry (depending on the weather) or I use the dryer on low.

Additional notes:
I used the infant insert only, placed inside the pocket. My son was born August 18, 2014 at 8lb7.5oz, the diaper was used from about that weight until he was about 10lbs. I think it will fit better once he grows a little more. I would definitely recommend this diaper and want to purchase a few more for my collection.

A couple of weeks ago when I [Andi] was working at the shop, two ladies came in one right after the other looking for a baby gift.

For a Mom who was not cloth diapering.

Well, let me tell you - they came to the right place! I don't know how many times I have said it already, but I'll say it again: We are not just about the cloth diapers. We are SO much more!

I was able to give both of those ladies about a dozen options to choose from that would be beneficial for a gift for a non-cloth-diapered baby.

Yup. A dozen!

So for those of you wanting to support a local business but thinking there's nothing for you here if you don't cloth diaper - think again! I'm going to give you a brief run-down on some products that just may interest you!

7. Amber. Okay, this one is a win-win for anybody at anytime. Baltic amber teething necklaces are made for wearing (not chewing) when a baby is teething. The warmth from the skin releases the active ingredient in the Baltic amber, succinic acid. Recent scientific research has proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. It improves immunity and the balance of acids when absorbed into the bloodstream, it stimulates the thyroid glands to help reduce drooling and soothes red inflamed cheeks. Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are recognized by allopathic medicine as a natural analgesic, which will help to relieve teething pain and calm a baby without resorting to drugs. 8. Soother Clips. If your baby needs a soother then the last thing you want to be doing is frantically searching for the plug. This soother clip is made using waxed cotton cord knotted around raw wood beads [made from the Ash Tree in sunny Crimea, Ukraine!]. The metal clip is sturdy, yet opens easily. Once closed around some fabric the grip is impressive. Kristin has intentionally given the larger beads a larger space between the knots to allow the beads to slide, making the soother clip a bit of a toy, too. It's all about dual-purpose! We love that it can also fit around the Wubbanub nicely.

Okay, so here's the deal - like it or not, back-to-school is right around the corner. I'll admit, part of me likes it...and part of me doesn't.

But regardless, nothing can be done about the passing of time. We CAN make back-to-school fun though, at least in one small way...and that's lunches!

You are probably all familiar by now with our line of Colibri Snack & Sandwich Bags - complete with the new Wide Snack Bag great for storing wraps, cutlery, or even to use as a pencil case at their desk! Two of the newest patterns - the Foxes and Glasses both shown below - are my own personal favorites. From time to time I [Andi] write up reviews on products I have tried from Tiny TreeHugger. Unfortunately, since my 'babies' are no longer babies, there are a lot of products that don't fit with the age of my family. For that reason - among others - it would be fantastic to get many outside people participating in doing blog write-ups for Tiny TreeHugger. Afterall, variety is the slice of life...and you only want to read about MY opinion so many times before you're ready for someone else's perspective! :)

From time to time we have had guest bloggers, but we are looking to amp that up on a much more regular basis. That means we need you - yes, YOU - to help us out!

So, we decided to start up a bit of a Guest Blogger Incentive Program. Anybody who does a guest blog post for us - that gets published - gets entered into a draw to win a $25 Gift Certificate to our shop. Draws will be done monthly as long as there is a minimum of 4 participants in that given month...if not, your name will get rolled over into the next month's draw.

Yesterday we posted about some new products in our shop that are perfect for the spring/summer season and promised that more was yet to come! So without making you wait any longer...

I think it's safe to say that we are all waiting on the edge of our seats for spring to arrive - you know, weather-wise, not just calendar-wise. It's been a long haul this winter [at least for us Manitobans!], and we deserve a quick change of seasons to reward us for what we've had to go through the past several months.

So while we're getting ready to dust off our ballet flats, lawn chairs and BBQ's, what about adding to your spring repertoire with some of Tiny TreeHugger's newest products?

I love my AMP diapers.

It was not my idea to cloth diaper. My husband really wanted to cloth diaper. So, for a person who is skeptical about cloth diapering, as I was, these are the diapers for you.

There are many great qualities of AMP cloth diapers. They are soft, great colour choices, they fit well, they hold messes in amazingly well, and the quality is awesome. I had a good friend tell me some cloth diaper basics before we had our first son and we figured AMP sounded like a good option and we liked that they were (and are still) made in Winnipeg.

We primarily bought the One Size Duo™ pocket diapers, because we wanted our diapers to grow with our child and to be able to stuff them with how much fluff we needed at any given time. That being said, I was getting a little tired with always stuffing fluff inside the pocket (which you don't have to do, but we liked that the inserts didn't shift around if they were placed inside the pocket). So, we tried a couple of Hook and Loop Stay Dry All In One's (AIO) and a couple Snap Stay Dry AIO's. Love that I do not have to stuff them. My husband prefers the hook and loop and I prefer the snap.

Our second is wearing a Snap Stay Dry AIO (pictured), that our first son wore and as you can see is wearing well and let me tell you, has been put to the test. I have a great stash of cloth diapers and don't need more, but every time I see a new colour or print for AMP, I want to have it. I recommend any of the AMP diapers.

Teaching Responsibility

A while back one of our Facebook statuses was "What kinds of chores do you give your kids? (And what ages are they?)" The responses we got were as follows:

Jen said: "My son is 21 months, and he tidies his toys, stacks his books, and helps put his diapers in the cupboard whenever I do laundry. He loves helping!"

Jessica said: "My 5 yr old feeds and waters the dog and birds wipes down the table and helps clear the table after dinner. My 3 yr old picks up toys puts dirty clothes in the laundry cleans the lint trap etc. They are great helpers."

Deborah said: "My 2.5 year old helps set the table and clear it. She helps with her toys. She tries to help with sweeping."

And we can't forget what Krista had to say: "A's primary job is making laundry and she is on floor dirt patrol, she cleans all dirt/rocks/food/etc that she finds. We are hoping she will be as detailed orientated when she needs to use a broom or vacuum instead of her mouth. She's 10 months. : )"

Kids as young as two (and even younger) are capable of helping out with things around the house as these few comments have shown. So what kinds of things do YOUR kids help out with?

I came across an article (yes, on Pinterest) entitled "The Key to Avoiding Entitlement." I encourage you to read it in its entirety, but the main message it was getting across was to stop doing stuff for your kids that they can do for themselves! Otherwise they are developing a sense of entitlement that won't serve them well as they get older.

What are your thoughts on this? Should kids - whatever their ages - be encouraged to do everything that they are able to do for themselves? Or is it still okay for parents to do things for our kids? It could be for a variety of reasons - maybe we just don't have time (or the patience) to let them do things themselves. Or maybe, quite simply, we WANT to do things for them.

In my personal experience with my own daughters (they are 8 and 10), they thrive on responsibility. Sure, this doesn't mean they won't complain about it from time to time - but I believe it serves a purpose to allow them to feel a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.

Two years ago - when they were in Grade 1 and Grade 3 - I stopped making their school lunches for them. I decided that this was a "chore" that they could take on themselves on a daily basis. I am happy to say that almost a year later (we started in March) this is still going strong. They do it all from start to finish - they get everything out of the fridge and cupboards, they make their sandwiches, put things in containers, and clean everything up afterwards. It took a little while for them to get into the groove but kids are quick learners and now it's like second nature for them. I have a list on the fridge that reminds them of what all needs to go in their lunch and they are good to go!

I have a ways to go yet to instill other regular chores in my kids - but I'm working on it! Dusting, vacuuming, emptying the dishwasher, folding laundry - these are all things that they are capable of doing. I don't think that kids need to run the household just because they can - afterall, kids should still have time to be kids - but instilling the value of hard work and responsibility are things they can carry with them as they grow up, leave the nest and start a home of their own.

We all want to be Super Mom, don't we? You know - have other Moms look at us and think, "Wow - she has it all together. I wish I could be like her."

I'll let you in on a little secret: A lot of Moms probably think that of you already. True story! They see your posts on Facebook about the results of your baking day. Or they see pictures of your kids wearing home-made Halloween costumes. They see you at the school field trip with a perfect hair day and a great outfit to boot. They see your posts on Instagram of all of the workouts that you do.

But they don't see the baskets of unfolded laundry cluttering up your living room floor. They don't see the other many, m-a-n-y days where you aren't a domestic diva. They don't see you on a non-field-trip day in baggy sweats with baby spit-up on your shoulder.

They only see what you portray; what you choose to highlight.

And you know those Moms that you look at and think "Wow - she has it all together. I wish I could be like her." She has the same story.

I read a quote awhile ago [I don't know who to credit it to, unfortunately] and it says this: "Never compare someone else's highlight reel with your behind-the-scenes footage."

The next time you see/read something on social media that has you feeling a bit jealous of how you don't compare to that...remind yourselves that this is their highlight reel you are seeing. Not the whole picture. You have your own highlight reel that others are comparing themselves too...and the vicious cycle continues.

We're so busy looking at other Moms and their accomplishments that we fail to look at our own. The bottom line is this: You only need to worry about being Super Mom to your kids...not to other Moms.

So accept someone else's highlight reel as just that: highlights. Then go back to your less-than-perfect life knowing that they're doing the same thing.

And then spend some time doing what you do best - being Super Mom to your kids.
