Simply and quite aptly named the Belgian Beer house, this wonderful little restaurant and pub has all the things going for it; a unique repertoire of beer that cannot be found anywhere else in the city, a wonderful location, great food and a unique atmosphere. Located on the Danube overlooking the corso around the mighty river on the Buda side, the food is traditional Belgian food (French food, German portions), and the atmosphere is a mix of a pub and an abbey, it is a veritable sanctum of brew.

Csakajósör!

This establishment is a new breed all to itself. Part shop, part pub, part gallery, this establishment is a new twist in enjoying beer. The shop has a selection of beers that is truly a sight to behold, with most every beer imaginable from all over the world being present, albeit in small numbers. There is also a draft in the shop and a little club area where you can sit down and enjoy a brew. Their name means “only good beer”, and they keep true to their name. Really reasonable down to earth prices and excellent quality makes this place one of the stand outs of Budapest.

Élesztő

If you are interested in home brews, in local microbreweries and in small batches that are literally taken from the cask in front of your eyes, then Élesztő (which means brewer’s yeast in Hungarian) is definitely the place for you. A large selection of awesome beers, including quite a few fruity ones are available here and all are local wonders, with a few imports. This place is a tad bit more expensive than the others on the list, but is also as close to a brewery as you can get without going to a brewery, and most of the staff brew their own beer. Rizmajer

Csepel is home to one of the best breweries in the country. One of the few microbreweries to make it big and produce large scale is Rizmajer, and they have an intense selection of all kinds of fruity beers, but their cognac and cherry one is by far the most popular (they also make corn and ginger beers as well). They have staple beers that they keep making, and there are specials just for a season or for a few weeks as well, so it is always useful to get a good look at what is going on in their brewery/restaurant.

The 7^th District

The party capital of Budapest is undoubtedly the 7^th district, and it is where most of the pub crawls in the city take place. Although going to the other districts and touching upon the 5^th, 6^th and even 8^th districts, the crawls are always centred on the self-named “party district”. This district is significant because it is small enough, central enough, and interesting enough to become the home of most of the clubs in the city. The old Jewish ghetto is located in this district, as well as many museums and pieces of living urban history, the streets are littered with quaint squares and little parks that lighten up the district and make it cosier and give it a character where the passer by just wants to sit out and hang out on the street. The tiny, winding streets of this district are also home to some of the biggest racial and religious diversity of the city, and it is one of the few truly international districts of Budapest. This district also caters to travellers and tourists, as there are several touristy areas and many hostels, hotels and accommodations here as well, and is the location where most of the expats live.

A novelty of the inner city of Budapest and particularly of the 7^th district are the Ruin Pubs, brilliant business ventures that makes perfect use of the opportunities in this part of the city. As much of the beautiful old buildings are run down, the 7^th district does exude a kind of grungy atmosphere, but one that is teeming with sophisticated and fun loving local life. The idea behind ruin bars was to keep this atmosphere going while providing a party place for all of the tourists and expats that come to this district, thus having a club that was run down and fits in well with the decaying elegance of the 7^th district, but inside is a modern bar with all of the luxuries you would expect from a bar that caters to expats and travellers. The interiors are done in an absurdist, surreal way, most of it recycled from the trash and the evictions that are frequent in this part of the city.

• Go to the 7th district of Budapest (this is where we organise our pub crawl every day). The old Jewish quarter is full of ruin bars and pubs, and even some bigger ruin clubs.
• Always dress according to the weather, many ruin pubs are actually open air, because they are apartment houses from the first half of the 20th century, and these houses always have a middle part that is open air (flat entrances are from the side).
• Have some cash with you. Most of these places let you pay by credit card, but not all of them. They are usually cheaper than Western European bars, one beer should be around 500 Ft, a cocktail around 1300 Ft.
• Be prepared for the crowd. Weekends are especially crowded, but this also means that you can find some good company on weekday evenings.
• Take care of your belongings, although Budapest is considered safe, pickpockets are everywhere.
• If you take a cab after the party, always take one which has a sticker of the company they belong to, otherwise the price may be quite high.

Every Saturday and Sunday, the inner city will be having its very own festival. It’s about time, as pretty much everything has its own few days, so why should the historical inner city of Budapest be any different? Starting tomorrow, Saturday the 31st of May, the entire inner city will transform into a giant festival ground, where any one can have a little taste of what the Hungarian festival atmosphere is like for free, and all of this will be available to any passerby, absolutely free of charge!

This is the first time this has been done, and so there is not much history, and nothing to really know, which is just perfect! A fresh and exciting new festival that will bring a new tradition and a new set of experiences. We have no idea how it is all going to turn out, but there is little chance for error with the way this remarkable event has been handled up until now. There are many stages in many different locations throughout the 5th district (the historic inner city and the poshest neighborhood in Budapest), playing a variety of music, from folk, pop and rock all the way to reggae.

The running order is very child friendly. There will bounce castles and activities just for kids, and many fun folksy arts and crafts centers where children (from toddlers all the way to early teens) are met with a warm, welcome atmosphere and plenty of stuff to do that will strengthen their little hands and develop their little minds. At night, the wine starts to flow, ands concerts by folk musicians will be met with a rock and roll gig from the Carbonfools, and a Reggae set form Irie Maffia, one of the premier reggae bands in Europe, featuring a singer called Sena of Ghanaian origin.

The programs start early on right after brunch, with live jazz music and tons of information desks, also with a tourist information center. The second day the local populace has chosen what they want to hear, and only at night will the gigs begin. There will also be a folk dance workshop, a fashion show, and various screenings of well known movies, as well as obscure art house productions. All in all the inner city will have a true and far reaching celebration of culture and arts, and is well worth visiting this weekend. The biggest museum event in Hungary has just started and is picking up steam. From September 28th until November 9th, 79 museums in Budapest will be participating in an autumn festival that is centred around eight themes.

The museums involved in the festival will have regular exhibitions outside of the walls of the museum itself, bringing cultural artifacts to public spaces, kindergartens, schools and town halls.

This theme is about getting families to come and create works of art together with artists and museum workers. There will be a photo mosaic made of selfies from Szentendre, an enormous mural that will be drawn by everyone who shows up on October 10th at the Ludwig museum, and many workshops and activities for children and adults alike.

The museums also are making an effort to present cultural spaces as an appealing option for teenagers. There will be talks, sports activities, music and other events geared towards teens. The Mining museum of Salgótarján is giving away free disco tickets to teens who participate in the tours, and there will also be a film festival of movies made by teens enrolled in various art schools in Budapest.

This park is all about atmosphere, and several trolley lines run through it, as well as the historic first underground stops nearby as well, making sure you can just hop on public transportation and conveniently leave whenever you feel like it. Flanked by beautiful Hero Square and the Vajdahunyadvár Castle, this large park is also the home to one of the main concert halls in Budapest, the famous Petőfi Csarnok (PECSA). This hall has a flea market every Sunday, and it is an unforgettable and unique experience! Thirty winemakers from the Balaton region will be the hosts of the leading gastronomical event in the Capital between the 4th and 6th of May. On the fourth Balaton Region Wine Festival you can find important cultural events, excellent wines and delicious Hungarian foods.

The Balaton Wine region can be divided into six smaller subregions: Balatonboglár, Balatonfüred-Csopak, Badacsony, Zala, Balatonfelvidék and the Nagy-Somló wine region, about 10,6 thousand hectares altogether.

The sandy, chalky, clay filled soil are the norm near the Pannon sea, while the young basalt mountains are the inheritors of significant vulcanic activity, and a significant amount of yellow soil can also be found. Just as art imitates real life, so does life in turn imitate fabrication. As more and more of our cultural interactions go online, we will see even more of the world of the internet spilling out into our world, and many obscure things will become popular, and vice versa. While there have been many Hungarian memes (like adding a moustache to an existing meme and mispronouncing it so it sounds like something Hungarian, the blind Komondor, or the communist grandma says meme), none have been as popular as Tibi atya, the alcoholic pastor of Humbákfalva. Supposed to be a description of a poor villager from the sticks of Eastern Hungary, the meme is pictures of the reverend with some phrases belying his simplistic thinking, usually about something to do with alcohol (like making fun of people for turning fruit into jelly instead of schnapps, or the lamentation that an empty glass is just a pile of burnt sand), and usually something rather philosophical in nature.

If you are trying to get drunk on very little money, this is one of the better places you can find. It is fairly low brow, but its college lowbrow, meaning you can cuss and swear and get hammered, but you aren’t likely to see a knife drawn anywhere, and the place will be full of undergrads for the most part.
