Tippmann Sports is excited to launch a new, special edition StraightLine barrel for woodsball that was designed to complement the look of Tippmann X7 painrball marker and Tippmann A-5 paintball marker. The new, 16” barrel was created through a partnership with HammerHead, a longtime leader in paintball barrel design, and offers unmatched quality and performance characteristics.

The special edition StraightLine barrel will be sold in a complete kit featuring three sizers, a carrying case and lithium grease. It will be available in mid-June 2008 at a retail price of $149. This new barrel is set to debut at Oklahoma D-Day, where The Hellions from CPX and the SPC team from Glasgow Scotland are scheduled use the new barrel in play. What's a good Tippmann paintball gun for beginners?

Q: I'm just starting out to play with my son. He's 13. I'm looking to buy 2 paintball guns for us to play with. My uncle has a house in the woods so we'll be playing there. I also plan to go to paintball fields. I want paintball guns that are good and will last and that i can customize in the future. Do you have any suggestions? I was looking at the Tippmann 98 Custom Pro Platinum Series ACT etrigger or the Tippmann 98 Custom ACT Platinum. What's the difference with all the Tippmann 98s.

A1: "The difference between the tippman 98C paintball guns comes down to bells and whistles.

The 'ACT' stands for 'anti-chop technology', which will help stop you from breaking paint with the bolt (chopping).

An e-trigger is an electronic grip frame, that instead of the trigger directly operating the sear, the trigger operates an electronic switch, which controls a solenoid to operate the sear. This also adds in firing modes - full automatic and ramping as well as standard semi. The big disadvantage here is that you introduce electronics and batteries, which may die or such.

An R/T is a gas assist to the standard mechanical trigger, it basically resets your trigger faster, allowing you to shoot faster. It can also be tweaked into a full auto mode. The advantage of this over an e-trigger is that it doesn't need batteries, but it doesn't have the firing modes either.

The Tippmann platinum series makes a couple changes to the basic 98C, I think it makes it easier to break down and work on, and makes it easier to upgrade. But don't quote me on that.

Honestly, a Tippmann 98C with ACT paintball gun is the best place to start. I'm not a fan of 'accuracy by volume', no matter how fun it seems to fling a lot of paint downfield. I would rather focus on improving accuracy than improving rate of fire."

It will give you the extra fire power you'll need with the response trigger and the cyclone feed system comes with the tippmann a5 paintball gun. You and your son will be happy with it in stock form. Once you get the feel of the game and sport you can easily modify it to match your needs. Plus your looking for a paintball gun that will last, a tippmann is exactly what your looking for.

"At the moment I have an Tippmann A5 paintball gun with a response trigger running it on CO2. It seems that after 7 pods the tank goes empty (cyclone stops turning). There is no sign of leaking CO2, I have fresh O-rings on it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated."

"I assume you have a 20oz tank, and the average pod holds what? 100? So you are not doing that bad with 700 shots. Tippmann A5 paintball guns are CO2 hogs."

"You assume correctly. I didn't know it was that bad. I know there are cyclone mods, and minor adjustments that can be made. But I was wondering if there was anything that can really turn this eating consumption down."

"If you get a regulator and a LPK you can get to as low as 300psi. Unregulated, you're probably at 750psi or higher."

"Tippmann A-5 paintball gun use more C02 per shot because of their Open Bolt Blow Back design. I can't decide if your blaming the Cyclone for eating up C02 or if you're stating that the Cyclone mods will help you achieve more shots per tank...

The Cyclone (& Response Trigger) is/are operated by excess gas that gets used to reset the bolt. Therefore it doesn't use anymore C02 to operate the Cyclone than it would if you didn't have a Cyclone on your Tippmann A-5 paintball gun. Their are upgrades for your Cyclone that will allow it to operate at a lower pressure, which will result in more shots per tank.

If you want to lower your Tippmann A-5 paintball gun's C02 usage you will need to by a Rear Spring kit. These work by determining how hoard the rear bolt hits the Valve pin, allowing you to unscrew your Velocity Screw as far as possible yet still shoot at 280+/- fps."

I have a tippmann a5 and I switched from a flatline barrel to a 20 inch sniper barrel. However, I was playing saturday, it was like 55 degrees and crappy out, and I used Evil paintballs and had constant chops. The ref told me the ballswerent meant for cold weather and I dont know wheher to agree with him or not. Can someone please tell me some good paintballs for the tippmann a5 that will shoot straight and not chop?

"Evil paint is a brittler paint used more in guns with a lower operating pressure. Your paintball gun runs a approximately psi most tournament level guns run at about psi-psi. Add to that the fact that the cyclone feed is not to friendly with brittle paint and you got trouble. Plus flatlines are not to gentle on paint to the sharp angle of the barrel.

Another words you need to use thicker shelled paint. A good thicker shelled high end paint would be RPS All Star. A cheaper option would be RPS STINGERS. I would also recommend WPN Weapons Grade. Also i heard good thing about ZAP Spank."

"Zap Spank is a excelent paint for cold weather. Proball also has a good paint that is spacifically designed for cold weather. Paints like, Evil, Chronic, DXS Bronze and Bushido all have very brittle shells. You have two things that are working directly against you, maybe three. First off, the Tippmann A-5 is more of a durable paintball marker that was designed for woodsball and scinerios. It is built to shoot paint for that type of play. The Cyclone feeder, although reliable, is very rough on paint. You need a thicker shelled paint just to get past your feeder. Secondly, a 20" barrel could be an issue. If you do not have a really good ball-to-bore compatibility, the extended length will cause more friction, or cuase the ball to bounce more off the inside of the barrel. Both scinerios will bust alot of balls. The third thing, are you shooting HPA or CO2? Evil is designed for HPA. CO2 alone will bust the paintball. If shooting CO2, a longer barrel will freeze fairly quickly if you shoot alot and cause more paintballs to break. What brand of barrel do you have?"

"We use PMI/RPS Marballizer Paintballs for the Flatline barrel. They seem to perform well in colder weather too. We are a Wisconsin team and commonly play in cooler temps. I think the Marbs fly a little farther with the Flatline too."

"Yeah, Evil isn't meant for cold weather and rec paintball markers. Try some RPS Stingers or Polar Ice if it gets colder. Sterling Ice is also a good option for coldweather recballing. Also be sure that the paint is a good fit if you can. The best way I think to test for is the ball is a good fit is if when you put a paintball in it you can blow it out relatively easy. If it gets stuck or it rolls out it isn't the right size. That might have been why you were chopping."

What is the best paintball for the Tippmann X7 paintball guns? I am new to owning a Tippmann X7 and my other paintball gun is a speedball gun that shoots just about anything.

Mine seems to only like marbs (PMI RPS Marballizer Paintballs)!
DXS Midnight 07 Paintballs
DXS Bronze Paintballs
Depends on your barrel. I use Nelson's Special Forces Ranger Paintballs with my 14 inch J&J ceramic and it seems to work out well.
It depends on your barrel and what caliber will fit snug in it a good test is if a paintball rolls straight thru your barrel its to small if it gets stuck and a quick puff of air wont get it out its to big if you blow it out with a quick puff its a good match to your barrel
I like to use JT first and DBX second

New operators thoughts on the Tippmann X7

Being as how I'm new I figured I might as well introduce myself and my experience with my new Tippmann X7 paintball gun.

It all started about a month ago. A new requirement for my scenario team came down. As per Tippmann's requirements (sponsorship) we are to all carry a tippy of some sort. Kind of a bummer for a guy who is used to playing with a SC Phantom or toting a cannon. I really didn't want to give up my Phantom. I've grown a little too attached to that ole' piece of technology.

Anyways, last weekend I picked up my Typpmann X7 paintball gun basic at the store. The week before I was able to buy a trinity wire stock and a 16" SP Linear barrel. I've got to say I was a little disappointed in how short the stock was and how loose it fit (both if which are fixed with proper modding). No fault of the X7's but it was an initial turn off. The barrel was great, it held a nice tight pattern with the field grade paint. The paintball gun itself performed flawlessly, no problems, no breaks or what not. My only complaint was how tough the front shroud was to attach. Darn! those pins wouldn't go in easy.

Game time, the match went pretty easy. I volunteered to play a 4 on 4 game with a bunch of speedballers. They chuckled a little when I walked up with the X7, you know how that goes. Nothing can beat a super dupper DM *insert number here*, especially a woodsballer with a tippy. Unfortunately for them they didn't take the time to listen to the ref inform them I'm on the field sponsored team. The game lasted only few minutes. I have to say I was impressed right off the bat with how the Tippmann X7 paintball gun handled itself. Good tight patterns and the proper amount of firepower to back it up. I ended up taking out 3 of the opposing teams players, no small part in due to the X7. This thing is great!Beats the stuffing out of a Tippmann 98 (the last tippy I owned).

So far that has been my experience with it. I haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces. I've got a scenario in March for that.

"I personally love Prolites and 68-carbines, which can still be found on ebay quite cheap. Most people will point you in the direction of a tippmann 98 custom as a first gun. I'm not fond of their ergonomics but I can attest that they'll go through literally millions of rounds before something goes wrong."

"Out of anything Tippmann has ever made, I'd have to cast my vote for the Pro/Carbine's as well. If you want something that IS still in production, then the Tippmann A5 paintball gun is probably a good choice. I'd steer clear of the Tippmann X7 paintball gun and their newest Army gun whatever it's called. The quality control on those seems to be lacking."

"I agree with all of the above. The Tippmann 98 custom will be the easiest tippmann semi to work on but the SL will be the easiest of all. In my tear down kit for the SL I have a 1/2" dowel rod for popping out the valve and a 3/16"(?) wrench and thats all. I can pull a sl apart in about 15 seconds if I practiced enough. I could have it back together in less than 30 and I am positive about that.

But you might never "need" to take it more apart than removing the barrel and bolt.

The guns mentioned in the other posts are bomb proof.

I cant reccomend the Tippmann A5 paintball gun especially for a beginner."

"Having owned a couple tippmann a-5's i'd honestly recommend them as a beginner (no offence chem-x)

they seem to work well and you just need to put a couple drops of oil in them every once in awhile, and with the cyclone you shouldnt have to worry about out shooting the gun and chopping that way (barrel breaks could happen but that depends on paint)

the only thing ive found complex on some is the vert air adapter with the oring,washer and spring other then that you shouldnt have any problem with disasembly and assembly plus they are very upgradable

"Having owned/used Tippmann 98's, A-5's, and Pro/Carbines, I like the Pro/Carbine the best. Better construction (extruded aluminum vs cast aluminum) which leads to better tolerances and thus better consistency and performance. They are absolute tanks. I've never seen one go down. The local field still has a few left in the back as emergency rentals. Recently at a big scenario, they ran out of rental 98's and loaned out some Carbines. They obviously hadn't been serviced or used in ages, and yet they all worked flawlessly. The rental 98's, though used more and maintained more frequently, had more issues. The A-5's I've seen have had more issues yet.

If you are looking for sheer reliability, the Pro/Carbine is champ. But it suffers from a heavy trigger pull (can be fixed with new springs), few aftermarket parts, and it is out of production so it might be harder to find.

My order of recommendation is Pro/Carbine, Tippmann A-5 paintball gun, then 98. The A-5 comes before the 98 because it has the cyclone feed, which when working properly, will allow you to shoot basically as fast as you can pull the trigger.

If you just want to get an easy to find gun, go play, and have some room for the marker to grow with you, then I recommend the Tippmann A-5 paintball gun."

"Not to turn this into a vs thread, but personally, I'd go with a Spyder instead of a Tippmann (since that's what I did when I was new). They're not quite as rugged, nor quite as mil-sim'able (if that's what you're going for), but they are ridiculously cheap (<$100 for an electronic or <$75 for a mechanical on eBay NIB) and SUPER easy to maintain. Personally, the only thing I think newer Tippmann's have going for them is the Flatline (and Apex tips now pretty much bring this to any marker you want), durability and Cyclone feed. They are set up so you can run over them with a truck and they still work, but if you ever do need to field strip them (especially 98s) it's a pain. Spyder paintball guns are pull one quick strip pin, slide out internals, swab, lube, reinsert. There are lots of upgrade and customization options available for Spyders, making them a great newbie marker out of the box and something that can grow with you. Anything from aftermarket bolt-ons to Spimmy (electropneumatic, ala Intimidator) and pump conversions can be done.

If you insist on going Tippmann, I'd spring for the A5 with a Flatline. It's very prolific so parts and upgrades are plentiful, you won't need an expensive hopper thanks to the cyclone feed, and while it's newish it's still pretty well proven to be durable. Older models such as the 98 or prolite/carbine are going to be cheaper, but the older you go the more money you're probably going to want to spend on upgrades or peripherals. Also, parts for anything before 98s can be tricky to find. This part is purely my opinion, but the ergonomics are much better than the 98; the A5 is set up to be aimed, the 98 is set up to be shot from the hip Rambo style. I'm a big fan of the much older Tippmanns (SMG, 68 Special, Factory F/A) but I think they started going awry when they tried to "dumb-down" their markers and relegated themselves to rental/newbie status with the 98 series. The A5 is a step in the right direction, although I'm not sure the Tippmann X7 paintball gun and new Alpha are following in it's footsteps.

How much $$ are you looking to spend? That will determine what you can get to some extent."

What is the differences between the Tippman paintball gun A5 and the Tippman X7 paintball gun?
Is one better than the other and if I was to get one are the guns that can be safely bought used?
What types of bullets can you use with them?

Tippman A5 paintball guns are very good guns for the beginner and very upgradable as well. Once you start getting the feel for the game and the marker there will be things that you will eventually want to upgrade. The Tippman X7's are basically just a new twist on the A5 as well the internals are upgraded I also think that the Cyclone feed system feeds a little faster than an Tippman A5. Both paintball guns are extremely upgradable.

As for paint they will pretty much shoot anygrade of paint (Except really high end tourny grade that tends to be very brittle) but they are .68 caliber markers so make sure that you use .68 cal paintballs.

As for buying used for the most part they can safely be purchased used with confidence.

The Tippman paintball guns A5 and the X7 are the most user friendly marker. Their operating procedure is real simple. You cant tear one of these up unless your just an idiot. You can throw it in a creek then roll it in the mud and take a wizz on it and it will still shoot. Its truely the workhorse of the paintball industry.

There are no differences in the basic operational design of the A5 and X7. The Tippmann X7 paintball gun has a few stock upgrades over the Tippman A5.

The cyclone comes qev stock making it operate just a bit faster and more efficient. Yet only a true critic would be able to tell the difference.
The egrip Tippman X7 is direct selonoid. A more efficient design.
The Tippman X7 body is magnesium composite making it supposedly lighter than the cast Tippman A5 body. I own both and could not tell a difference. This however makes the marker larger in comparison to an A5.
The Х7 has some stock weaver railing in the main body making it able to haul more junk useless milsim stuff.

Now i shoot an A5 and a X7. I love Tippmanns. My Tippmann paintball gun X7 is real nice and i love it. Its reliable and simple to operate and maintain. So is the A5. If your a rec baller, its great. If your lookin to go to big scenario games and really rip some ass, get a tourney style gun. Tippman X7 cannot keep up on the field with tourney guns. I spent about a grand between both Tippmanns before I came face to face with this reality. But I am an aggressive player and am most often found in the front. If your looking to play navy seal sniper, youll be right at home with the Toppman A5 or the X7's milsim capabilities.

The advantages to the Tippmann paintball gun X7 in my opinion are minimal at best. The Tippman X7 drove the price of the A5 down, and I feel that the A5 is the same bang for less bucks...

Pro-Team Products gets patent for Tac Cap

The TAC CAP is an adjustable capacity loader cap designed to fit the Tippmann A-5 paintball gun Cyclone feeder. The Tac Cap can be modified by the user to hold 30, 60 or 90 rounds, and is supplied with a flip-top lid for easy reloading.

The product has become particularly popular with mil-sim players and with military and law enforcement trainers; replacing the standard 200 round magazine with a 30 round TAC CAP restricts the marker to realistic magazine capacities.

RECON Magazine Partners with Blast Radius Woodsball Podcast

RECON, the Magazine of Woods Paintball, has teamed up with Blast Radius Woodsball Podcast to bring the paintball community even more in depth coverage of the sport.

The show's host, Wayne Montle, will broadcast exclusive interviews with RECON staff, photographers and reporters to uncover the "inside story" behind selected articles in the magazine.

Montle and RECON Editor-in-Chief Dawn Allcot first met at the 2007 Special Ops Elite Weekend. Montle loaned Allcot a remote line for her Tippmann A-5 paintball gun and the two media professionals became fast friends. With so much synergy between the Podcast and the magazine, Montle devised this creative cross-promotion to benefit the woodsball and scenario community.
