There seems to be a lot of questions and issues with reciprocal links lately which means it must be time for a general information post regarding this submission option.

First off, reciprocal links are not required to be listed in the SuperBlog Directory. In fact the only benefit you get from putting a link back to us from your blog is the addition of your RSS feed to your listing page which places links back to your last 5 posts. What a reciprocal link on your blog will not do is get your blog listed with less than 3 current months of posting history. The one and only way to get listed early is via the “Featured” submission option.

The real problems lately with reciprocal link submissions seem to be with my bot finding the link back on your site. 99% of the emails I recieve are from people who’s link back is not being found during the submission process. This can be caused by many different issues including but not limited to the use of spam plugins like Wordpress’ Bad Behavior, a large number of links on your blog, or a slow loading blog that causes the bot to time out.

If your link back is not being found you have 2 options.

1. Leave the link back on your site on the home page and submit as a “Standard Listing” with your RSS information in the RSS field. When I review your submission I will manually upgrade you to the reciprocal listing with the RSS feed enabled.

2. Put the link back on your site and put http://www.superblogdirectory.com in the reciprocal field and as long as the link back is present when I review your submission, it will be listed with the RSS links.

Before contacting me about this issue please ensure you try either one of these options after clearing your browser’s cache. This will take care of any reciprocal submissions problems you might have been experiencing.

By submitting your site for review for possible inclusion to the Superblog Directory you are agreeing to the following terms of service:

- If accepted, we do not guarantee any SEO benefits other than a direct link to the listed site nor do we claim any traffic increases as a result of inclusion.

- Submitting your blog does not guarantee inclusion in the directory. We strive to only accept sites that provide current relevant information in your chosen category. We have a listed set of minimum requirements on the submission page but that list in not all inclusive.

- We reserve the right to move your listing to what we consider the most relevant category and could change the listing to different categories during the life of the listing depending on the evolution of our category structure (applies only to standard and reciprocal listings).

- We reserve the right to remove your listing without notice anytime in the future if it no longer meets our listing requirements. This includes featured listings.

- We make no guarantees as to the length of time that your link will appear in this directory. We strive to maintain current site and database backups but unforseen host or backup issues could result in information loss. We also cannot guarantee that any future owner change will not result in listing removal or data loss.

- These terms are fluid and could change in the future. We will attempt to notify those listed of the changes but we recommend you check back from time to time.

If for whatever reason you do not agree with these terms, do not submit your blog for review or if you are already listed please contact us to have your listing removed from the directory.

When I first decided to migrate the comment systems of my 2 blogs away from the built in Wordpress systems, IntenseDebate was the first option I looked at. Unfortunately, at the time they had just been sold to Automattic (the Wordpress folks) and had digressed into an invite only service temporarily while they made the transition. Because of that I decided to instead go with Disqus.

Last week, I finally received an invite code from IntenseDebate and decided to change over the comment system here to their service (As of Wednesday they are now open for everyone).

Installation on a Wordpress blog was simple, and exactly like Disqus in that once you have signed up for an account, you simply install a plugin and tweak the settings to fit your tastes. Also important with the latest incarnation of IntenseDebate is the addition of the 2 way comment syncing feature. Unlike in the previous version, IntenseDebate now allows you to import your older comments onto their servers and also places any comments placed with your IntenseDebate setup back into your Wordpress install so that if you decide to not use their service, all your comments will still be accessible. Disqus added this absolutely mandatory feature a few months ago so it is nice to see it with IntenseDebate now.

Watch a video showing some of IntenseDebates features:

One difference though will be seen starting with the soon to be released Wordpress 2.7. As I mentioned, IntenseDebate was purchased by Automattic and one results of that purchase will be the eventual integration of IntenseDebate into a standard feature of Wordpress. Version 2.7 is expected to benefit from that partnership with rumors of the integration of some of IntenseDebates features but what features that might be is still up for debate. To find out more about IntenseDebate and Wordpress they have provided the little tutorial below:

And less I forget those not using Wordpress, IntenseDebate also supports a variety of other platforms including automated installs for Blogger, Typepad and Tumblr with available Javascript code for other platforms and custom installations.

Neither this blog or my other one with Disqus installed receives many comments but I will continue to put both services to the test in the coming months and let you know if any major differences come up. And if any of you have any opinions or experiences with either service or their other competitors like SezWho and JS-Kit feel free to let us know.

ZDNet is reporting via Craig Murphy on a typosquatting site that is offering a fake download version of Wordpress that could open your site up to hacking via a backdoor.

“Craig talks about how when he logged in to his admin account in WordPress he received a “High Risk Vulnerability Warning” from a spoofed WordPress domain. (The last ’s’ in WordPress.org has been replaced by a ‘z’.) The Warning suggests upgrading to the ‘new’ version 2.6.4 of WordPress. Downloading this ‘new’ version of WordPress I found that of the 638 files in version 2.6.4, 637 were identical to the same files in the official 2.6.3. The only difference was in the file pluggable.php. The hacked version of the file pluggable appears to be stealing the content of cookies on larger installations of WordPress. Sophos are now detecting this file as Troj/WPHack-A.”

It appears that only those mistakenly downloading from the typosquatted domain are at risk but as always be sure that you are getting your updates from the proper sources and if you have downloaded version 2.6.4 of Wordpress you might want to be wary as it currently doesn’t exist.

Wordpress 2.7 has taken the next step with yesterday’s release of Beta 1.

The first public beta of WordPress 2.7 is here at last. Join the thousands of people already testing 2.7 by downloading 2.7 Beta 1. As previously mentioned on this blog, 2.7 is bringing a new visual design. This design is almost completely implemented, but there are still a few areas that aren’t quite finished in Beta 1. There are also several glitches in certain browsers. Beta 1 provides the best experience in Firefox and Safari. Don’t worry, we are working on IE and Opera and will have those looking good in time for the final release.

I installed the Beta here and am putting it through it paces and so far I am impressed. It will take a while to get used to the redesigned admin area but the new plugin installation routine ala Joomla is great as is the integration of some features that before could only be had with plugins including sticky posts.

Also announced yesterday was the fact that the release date has been pushed back until at least the end of November from the previously announced November 10th released date.

Daniel Dura’s Moderator is a Wordpress comment moderating tool that lives on your desktop and allows you to moderate your blog’s comments without having to leave your desktop. The hybrid tool requires Adobe Air to run the local application as well as a plugin for your Wordpress 2.6+ installation and pulls in comments from your moderation queue every 1-60 minutes. You can then choose to accept, delete or mark as spam comments directly from within the app.

Some features of this early version:

* Viewing unmoderated comments.
* Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.
* Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.
* Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.
* Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.

As mentioned this is an early version released this week. Possible features for future releases include multiple blog integration, the ability to reply to comments from within the app, and near real time notification of new comments.

I personally am leaning towards online comment systems like Disqus for handling the comment chores but if you prefer the Wordpress built in commenting system and have a lot of comments to moderate, this just might be for you.

Wordpress has released version 2.6.3 to fix a vulnerability in the Snoopy library which is used to pull in the feeds you see in your Control Panel. As with each security update, Wordpress is recommending that you grab the upgrade which can be found here.

Even though the Snoopy library vulnerabity would seem to be low risk, any security hole should be fixed and in this case you can go the easy rout if you so desire and just upload the following 2 files and overwrite the ones from version 2.6.2

If you run a Wordpress blog and you want to move your site to a new URL, Velvet Blues has just the tool for you.

One of the issues of moving domains is what to do with all the links in your posts that point to the old URL. If you know SQL, you could run a search and replace script right on your database, but if SQL isn’t your game, until now your only option is to manually check each post for URL references. Not a fun prospect if you have a lot of posts and like to link to your own posts.

Enter Update URLs, it will do the heavy lifting for you in an easy to use plugin. Just enter your old and new URLs and the plugin scours your posts and pages for the outdated URL and replaces it with the new one. A minute or so later you are done.

It is free and can be downloaded here.

While this “trick” isn’t a major deal in the grand scheme of unsavory tactics, exaggerating your FeedBurner feed count is a fairly recent and easy way to give your blog the look of popularity.

For those living under a rock for the past few years, FeedBurner is an online service that takes your RSS feed and optimizes it for the greatest compatibility and tracks its usage giving you some useful information about those that read your content. Along those lines they also give you the opportunity to publicize your feed which includes a chicklet that lists the number of readers your FeedBurner generated feed has (see the sidebar here). In theory of course is the larger the number of readers the more popular the blog would be.

With that in mind, someone figured out a way to cheat that system (not rocket science by the way) so that the chicklet on their site shows a reader count well in excess of what it really is. I read about this somewhere a few months back and this morning I came across a blog during my morning submission review that was utilizing this tactic.

So what exactly is needed to spoof your FeedBurner count? Not much really, all you need to do is find a site using FeedBurner that has a feed count that you wish you had. Once you do that all you do is right click on the chicklet (image is supposed to be hosted by FeedBurner, not your web site), save it to your PC, upload it to your site, and place it on your blog linked to your FeedBurner feed. Viola, you have hundreds if not thousands of pretend readers.

Normally when I am reviewing a site I pay little if any attention to the Feedburner count but this morning I found it curious that a 2 month old site with barely any pages indexed in the various seach engines could have over 28,000 readers. Add to that an Alexa Rank of over 3 million and I knew that something was amiss. A quick right click – view properties on the image confirmed my suspicions…fake.

A quick side note. Unlike this particular site, if you are going to attempt to fake your FeedBurner count, at least sign up for FeedBurner first. Linking your stolen FeedBurner chicklet to your normal non-FeedBurner feed is just too obvious…
