Portable generators are very popular because they can be used just about anywhere. One of the most popular brands is Generac portable generators because they are one of the few companies that strive to meet industrial, commercial, and residential needs and they do all three quite well. While there are many great features about the Generac brand, there are major characteristics that makes it one of the most popular on the market.

Quiet Operation

One of the complaints among many people who have ever used a portable generator is that many of them are very loud, which makes it very hard to use in a home environment and even difficult at a work site. The Generac portable generators are quiet in operation and have been specially made to work quietly, which of course makes them extremely popular for anyone needing this item.

Replacement Parts are Available

There is nothing worse than needing a replacement part on an item you have purchased only to find out they no longer make the parts or you cannot find it. This will not happen with it because the parts are available, which means you are back in business quickly especially when you rely on a portable generator for your work site or commercial use.

Manufactured in the United States
Where a product is manufactured is a huge ordeal especially when it comes to finding replacement parts or getting help with customer service. All of the Generac portable generators are manufactured in Iowa or Wisconsin, which makes it easier to not just get your replacement parts but to get help from customer service.

This is another benefit that many love about the Generac brand, their customer service is top-notch and all you have to do is pick up the phone and you will be speaking with someone very knowledgeable of your specific generator. One of the elements to any good product is having the customer service to back it up and make sure that all your concerns and questions are addressed in a timely and professional way.

Different Sizes for Varying Budgets
One of the nice aspects is that they make many models for varying budgets and various needs. For instance, the company makes large sizes for commercial uses, rugged units for work areas, such as construction areas, and then smaller units for those traveling in RV’s. In addition, the company makes generators for home use in case of a power outage due to storms or any other mishap.

Final Thoughts

They are one of the most popular for a number of reasons because they offer what residential and commercial need in a backup generator. They make them in various sizes in order to meet your needs and to find the best possible way in which to make sure you have a reliable source of power when you need it.

A quiet generator can really be a life saver especially if you live in a remote area where it may take some time for the power to come back on.

A generator can be loud. It produces a lot of noise and can literally keep someone up at night with its grinding noise. A quiet one can solve the noise problem. There is no such thing as a one hundred percent silent one, they are machines and a certain amount of noise will be generated through use but they make use of special materials that provide a barrier to the noise that they produce.
They can have built in or added on shields that will absorb some of the noise and make the sound that they generate bearable.

Some tips to reduce generator noise

Set up your generator as far from your enjoyment area as possible. When you locate it far away, the sound will become quieter in some way.

Try to locate the generator behind a wall or build a thick barrier around it so that the sound will minimize

Try to buy a small power backup device which sufficient for your use will be great. The smaller the generator, the lower the noise it provides

Some manufacturers do offer some quiet generator which build in a big muffler; however, the price is more expensive. If the noise is really a concern, you might want to spend a bit more money on buying these machines.

Quiet Yamaha portable generators

The quiet portable generators can run using a range of fuels along the lines of diesel, natural gas and petrol. The gasoline models are certainly the economical and most portable. They are also the quietest that is definitely also a crucial determinant to take into consideration when making a purchase.

The Yamaha EF1000 model is a brilliant generator that is light, strong and very simple to utilize, do not produce high noise, very quiet and provide pure Alternate Current energy. This generator of Yamaha provides 1000 watt power which is higher as compared to other generators of the same size that just provide 400 watt power only. Moreover these devices are capable of functioning for about 15 hours on a single fuel reservoir and can provide power to all the key machines. It is considered as one of the most popular generators because of its shiny design and noise reducing system

What is water fuel generator for trucks? Most truck owners rely on their vehicle to move heavy loads from one location to another due to its power and reliability.

However, there is a drawback to large engine capacity. A truck will consume a lot of fuel. With the current high global crude oil prices, fueling a truck has become an ordeal. Many are finding it hard to make ends meet because of this challenge. One suggestion to save fuel on trucks is to use water fuel generators. How does it work and how much would it cost? This article will provide some information on the topic.

Water fuel generator for trucks is basically attaching an electrolysis device to the engine. The function of the device is to extract hydrogen gas (H2) from water. We know that water is made of 2 parts hydrogen and one part oxygen thus the name H2O. By applying electricity through water in the electrolysis device, H2 bubbles are produce. The hydrogen gas is to be channeled into the engine air intake system. Because of the flammable properties of H2, it will create a potent mixture when combine with conventional gasoline in the combustion chambers. The end result is a bigger bang for your buck. Your truck engine will burn fuel more efficiently and releasing more power.

When you are using the same amount of fuel for your truck and achieving high engine torque, your vehicle will travel further thus increasing its mileage. Higher mileage means better cost savings for truck owners. Some people has experienced savings as much as 30 percent after using the water fuel generator.

It is good to know that to modify your truck to run on water does not cost you and arm and a leg. There are many conversion guides available online. Your truck can be installed with a water fuel generator with a budget of less than $150.

In spite that manual switches predate automatic switches that doesn't make them instantly inferior. When you choose automatic transfer switches, you needn't worry about navigating darkened utility rooms to switch to generator power.

Manual transfer switches predate automatic switches, but they are still utilized widely today. Unlike automatic switches, manual switches need one to switch from grid power to generator power in the event of power outage, and then back to grid power when it resumes.
In automatic switches, special circuitry allows this process to be controlled by computer. In facilities that have a single, conveniently located generator and don’t require constant power, the difference between manual and automatic switches is negligible. But for companies that occupy a campus setting and have more than one generator to service numerous buildings, automatic switches offer the most convenience.

Pros and cons for Manual Transfer Switch

In spite that manual switches predate automatic switches that doesn’t make them instantly inferior. For home using lower priced manual switches that connect to power from a smaller generator make the most sense, and bring the added advantage that no power is wasted dealing with false brown out and power surge alarms. This advantage of manual switches also benefits industrial and commercial outfits. However, in some instances, companies have too many generators in too many locations to hassle with manual switch-overs. Auto transfer is also the standard at companies that wish to reduce manpower by automating as many processes as possible.

Pros and cons for Auto Transfer Switch

When you choose automatic transfer switches, you needn’t worry about navigating darkened utility rooms to switch to generator power. But, depending on how an auto transfer switch is designed, your building could be at risk for a power surge. There are two types of auto transfer switches: “break before make” models, which disengage with grid power before accessing generator power; and “make before break” models, which briefly connect to generator power without disengaging from grid power. Make before break switches are typically used when constant power supply isn’t optional, such as in hospitals, labs, and some defense organizations.

Almost everyone knows the value of backup generators. But few know the value of choosing the right transfer switch models to support their power needs. Whether your company is considering purchasing its first generator or needs maintenance work performed on an older one, it’s best to consult with an experienced emergency power equipment supply company, because a generator needs to do more than produce peace of mind; it also needs to work the right way. Otherwise, you could be spending the next brown out phoning the power company instead of conducting business as usual.

What Is an Automatic Transfer Switch?

Automatic transfer switch has been developed for needs of electrical shifts. A transfer switch provides a safe method to hook up your generator with selected circuits that you identify inside your home. When professionally installed next to your breaker box, it will help to prevent any power from accidentally becoming live and dangerous outside your home where workers might be servicing the utility lines.
An automatic transfer switch is power within your hands. It also functions to determine the incoming power from the utility source. This allows for detection of anomalies such as voltage sags, brownouts, spikes or surges and will automatically command the generator to turn on and act as an energy provider during these fluctuations.
Often this also enables the operator to assert if energy is available or not. This is because this minute device has the capacity to break or divert circuit and it can also decide whether preset or not, unto which energy supplier will the electricity come from. The electromechanical type is the most common form of this device, which is connected to one or more electrical contacts. The contacts can be either closed or open. When closed, the contacts are touching and electricity is flowing freely between them whereas open contacts are not at all connected to each other and are not producing energy.
A manual switching device is a key to safe and convenient operation of portable types of devices that supply power to your home. It isolates circuits using the power engine, and then the switching device eliminates the risk of back feeding the electrical utility, which can cause injury to workers and property damage.

How Does Transfer Switch Work?

When an emergency power system operates using an automatic switch, it contains one of the following types of switches: open transition, or closed transition.
The implementation of closed transition models typically involves special load synchronization considerations, such as: the difference in voltage between the primary and secondary energy source; the difference in frequency (Hz) between the sources; and the difference in relative phase angle between the sources. Proper synchronization between primary and secondary energy sources ensures an overlap time of less than 100 milliseconds.
Open transition models switch a building from commercial electricity to generator electricity after ending its connection to the former.
Unlike closed transition models, open transition models are ideal for entities that don’t require constant electric supply.
It is always a good idea to have a professionally installed transfer switch connect your portable generator to your household control box. Nevertheless, most conscientious homeowners can safely use this source of backup power if they will confine its use to smaller essential home appliances.

Never store fuel for your generator in the home.

Gasoline, propane, kerosene, and other flammable liquids should be stored away from living areas, and only in properly labeled, non-glass safety containers.

Do not store fuel near a fuel-burning appliance, such as a furnace or water heater. Before refueling the generator, turn it off and let it cool down. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts could ignite.

How to avoid Fire Hazard

Never store fuel for your generator in the home. Gasoline, propane, kerosene, and other flammable liquids should be stored outside of living areas in properly-labeled, non-glass safety containers.

Do not store them near a fuel-burning appliance, such as a natural gas water heater in a garage.

Before refueling the generator, turn it off and let it cool down. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts could ignite.

If fuel is spilled or the container is not sealed properly, invisible vapors can travel along the ground and then can be ignited by the appliance’s pilot light or by arcs from electric switches in the appliance.

Never refuel while smoking or in the vicinity of an open flame.

Portable generators may cause of shock and electrocution, especially if they are operated in wet conditions.

Portable generators may cause of shock and electrocution, especially if they are operated in wet conditions.

When plugging in appliances, make sure they are plugged directly into the generator or a heavy duty outdoor-rated extension cord.
The cords should be checked for cuts, tears and that the plug has all three prongs, especially a grounding pin.

If you must connect the generator to the house wiring to power appliances, have a qualified electrician install a properly rated transfer switch in accordance with the National Electrical Code® (NEC) and all applicable state and local electrical codes.

If you must use a generator when it is wet outside, operate the generator under an open, canopy-like structure on a dry surface where water cannot reach it or puddle or drain under it. Dry your hands, if wet, before touching the generator.
Protect the generator from rain and other moisture sources to prevent electrocution.

Use only heavy-duty extension cords that are specifically designed for outdoor use when connecting appliances to a portable generator. Make sure the wattage rating for each cord exceeds the total wattage of all appliances connected to it.

Use extension cords that are long enough to allow the generator to be placed outdoors and far away from windows, doors, and vents to the home or to other structures (tents, other RVs, etc.). Check that the entire length of each cord is free of cuts or tears and that the plug has all three prongs. Protect the cord from getting pinched or crushed if it passes through a window or doorway.

NEVER try to power the house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet. This is sometimes called “backfeeding”.

“Backfeeding” is extremely dangerous! It presents an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors served by the same utility transformer. It also bypasses some of the built-in household circuit protection devices.

To avoid electrical shocks, always properly ground the generator according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Always make sure that the total electric load on your generator does not exceed the manufacturer’s rating.

How to avoid Electrical Hazards

Keep the generator dry.

Dry your hands, if wet, before touching the generator

Use the right extension cord.

Check your equipment and cords before use. Double check where the exhaust is facing, where the generator is located, and the condition of the electrical cords.

NEVER plug the generator into a wall outlet. “Backfeeding” is extremely dangerous and presents an electrocution risk.

If you used incorrectly, gasoline, kerosene, and other gas-powered generators can cause carbon (CO) monoxide poisoning, generator accidents can be fatal!

Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Portable generators are useful when temporary or remote electric power is needed.
However, if used incorrectly, gasoline, kerosene, and other gas-powered generators can cause carbon (CO) monoxide poisoning, Generator accidents can be fatal!

Every year, people die in accidents related to portable generator use. For example, a young camper was killed by CO from a portable generator’s exhaust tube adjacent to the victim’s campsite. Most deaths involve CO poisoning from portable generators used indoors or in partially enclosed spaces.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that between
1999 and 2004 portable generators caused 172 CO poisoning deaths in the U.S.
Generators produce high levels of CO in their exhaust. Carbon monoxide around a generator and its exhaust tube can build up within minutes, even outdoors.

Carbon monoxide can linger for hours, even after the generator is shut off.
You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide. So even if you do not smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO.

You can help protect yourself by installing CO alarms (battery-operated or plug-in with battery back-up) in your home, RV, cabin of your boat or other area where carbon monoxide may be present. Carbon monoxide detectors should be certified to the latest UL safety standards.

Test your CO detector monthly. Replace the batteries in the spring and in the fall when clocks are changed for daylight savings time.

If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, GET TO FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY! DO NOT DELAY! The carbon monoxide from generators is deadly and can quickly overcome you and others in the area.

How to avoid CO Poisoning Hazards

NEVER use a generator inside of a home, garage, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed area. Locate the unit outdoors and far from doors, windows, and vents.

Always run your generator in a well-ventilated area, and only if you can vent its exhaust safely. Make sure the exhaust hose is placed far from other campers, tents, boats, cabins, etc.

Install CO alarms in your home, RV, boat or other area where CO may be present

Due to recent storms that caused lengthy power outages many residents are contracting to have permanent standby electrical generators installed.

These permanent generators are typically connected to a natural gas supply line.
The following information is intended to assist the homeowner in having a permanent generator installed in a safe and ordinance compliant manner.

Generator installation permit

A permit for installation and using standby home generator is required.
The permit may be obtained by either the property owner or the contractor for the property owner.
The contractor must have proof of valid NYS Worker’s Compensation & NYS Disability on file with the Town of Amherst.
Additional requirements may apply if the residence is subject to deed restrictions, subdivision constraints or is part of a condominium or other property association.
A copy of the survey of the property is needed so that it can be determined that the proposed location complies with:

The Town of Amherst Zoning Ordinanc

The NYS Building & Fire Codes

National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 37

The manufacturers installation instructions.

Home generator location

The home generator location is very important to exclude fire and exhaust gas hazards.
The generator must have at least 5ft. clearance to combustible materials on all sides, including overhead.

The home generator must be placed so that exhaust gases will not collect adjacent to, enter into or be drawn into an occupied building.

You should pay attention to wind and air currents at the location, and distances to windows or other building openings.

The standby home generator must be installed level and not where water may accumulate. If the generator site is in a regulated flood hazard area the unit must be located above the base flood elevation.

The home generator must not be sited where water could flood or spray the unit. Sump pump discharge area, down spout discharge or similar issues must be considered.

Home electrical generator must not be located over buried utility services.

It also must not block access to other utility equipment such as Electric Service, telephone equipment, Gas Meters, etc.

The generator system unit must be located so that there are no obstructions such as grass or landscaping.

Inspection

Once the standby home generator unit is installed, the installation must be inspected by the Town Building Department to determine compliance with all applicable requirements.

Portable electric generators offer great benefits when outages affect your home.
Portable generators come in many sizes. Following these steps will help you select the right size for your needs.

What is “constant wattage”?

A portable generator operates a limited number of appliances and lights. Choose the items you want to run with the generator and add up the wattage they use.
That total is your “constant wattage,” or the energy you will need on a constant basis to keep these items running. For help determining wattage information, see the “Calculating Energy Usage” section below.

What is “start-up wattage”?

Determining the “constant wattage” of your appliances is not good enough. Appliances with motors, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, can need two to three times their normal wattage when the motor starts up.

The generator you pick must have a surge rating that meets or exceeds your added “start-up wattage” needs.
To find out your “start-up wattage,” identify the appliances with motors that you will run with your generator. Double the “constant wattage” of these items, then add up the totals.

Match voltage ratings

Most home appliances are rated at 120-volts, but some larger electric appliances, such as ovens, clothes dryers and well pumps, are rated at 240-volts. Portable generators may be rated at 120-volts only, or a combination of 120- and 240-volts.

Make sure the generator you choose matches the voltage ratings of the items you want to run.
