This is my personal collection of tips and tricks to effective parenting. Power to the Parents!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06434176856107304383noreply@blogger.comBlogger1035125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9988715.post-46016175283607163222016-02-11T18:09:00.005+08:002016-02-11T18:09:57.883+08:00How To Score Well on TOEFL?

Have a child who needs to sit for TOEFL?

How do they prepare for it?
Tuition? Books?

Well, what if they could practice TOEFL exam questions online?

I found a website where your children can practice all the 4 sections in the TOEFL exam: Reading , Writing, Listening and Speaking.

There is a FREE section but that only gives you limited questions.
They do have different subscription options: You can pay weekly, monthly or a one time fee for 4 months.

If you want you children to score high on the TOEFL, this is a study option you should seriously consider.
Having them learn from books alone won't help much because there is a SPEAKING and LISTENING section to the exam.

The more your children practice doing these TOEFL questions, the more familiar they become with the format and the more confident they will become.

What is the best education to give my children?

Which school should I send them to?

Government/Public school? Private school? International school? Chinese school?

Should I send them to school?

What about homeschooling? Homeschooling centre? Homeschool at home?

What syllabus should I follow? Do I need to follow a syllabus?

What about exams?

These are the questions I've asked myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

When did educating our children get so complicated?

I haven't talked much about homeschooling my daughter. She's now 14 and we started homeschooling last year.

I don't claim to know what I'm doing. It's like an experimental journey with her and circumstances keep changing. Anyway, below is MY reason for deciding to venture into homeschooling with her.

REASON FOR HOMESCHOOLING

There were certain subjects in school she was not very enthusiastic about learning. I've learned that kids don't excel in things they don't like to do. You can force them to learn and tell them to endure but you'd kill their love for learning and creativity along the way.

I don't want my children to be in a system that don't allow their true potential to shine through. School is a "one size fits all" idea.
Albert Einstein says it perfectly: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

I want to give her the freedom to learn things she will never learn in school. Once in school, she won't have time to do the things she like e.g. playing piano for fun, learning different languages, computer coding, reading books, playing badminton etc.... I don't want to criticize teachers but you have to admit that sometimes the homework they give is just a waste of time. I am not a fan of rote learning. I'd rather my kids play a puzzle or problem solving game on the computer than have them copy their exam paper on to their exercise book.

I hate the idea that kids are learning just to pass exams and stressing out to get As. Learning should be about gaining knowledge, feeding curiosity, nurturing creativity or gaining a skill.

You can learn almost anything online these days.

She is able to work independently. I just need to point her in the right direction, and she can learn on her own. I don't need to carry a cane around, threatening to bring down the house just to get her to study.

MY FEAR OF HOMESCHOOLING

Even with my many reasons to homeschool, I still have my fears.

What if I don't do her homeschooling correctly and screw up her future, and she can't get into any university? But then, does she really need to go to uni? There are so many ways to earn a living right? Which leads to the question... "What does she want to do?" and "How do we get her there?"

There is safety in doing things the "traditional" way ie. follow a syllabus, sit for exam. But that's what I don't want in the first place... learning just to pass exams. It is scary to do things differently than what others are used to. It's like taking an unknown road hoping it leads to the right destination.

MY HOMESCHOOLING PLAN FOR NOW

Homeschooling my daughter is like playing with playdoh. We both discuss what we want to do and then we 'mold' the learning to reach the goal.

Sounds straightforward but it is not, because our goals change as circumstances change.

Initially we decided that she will sit for the Cambridge IGCSE when she's 16. That's what most international schools are doing anyway. I got her the KS3 books: English, Math, Science, Geography, History.
PROBLEM:

We still need to know the right format in answering the exam questions. I'm not qualified in that area. Of course I could probably hire a qualified IGCSE tutor.

It is still the rigid way of studying to pass an exam.

Malaysian currency is dropping. The price to sit for 1 paper has gone up considerably. Before it was like about RM300++ for 1 subject. I was told it is now above RM1000? I'm not too sure about this so don't quote me just yet.

THE NEW WAY
So we decided that maybe IGCSE is NOT for us. Taking a step back and looking at how the world works these days, it seems that being specialized in a certain skill is much more valuable than having a general degree.

Seeing that my daughter has no ambition on becoming a doctor, lawyer, engineer (or whatever profession that requires going though the "traditional" education route), we can maybe skip high school exams like IGCSE, GED, or SPM. She's into computer coding, web design and that sort of stuff. So, our goal now is for her to be certified in those areas. There's opportunity there for her to find work online too to build up her portfolio.
Another skill for her to master is English writing. If she can write well, she has many different work options too.

At first I wasn't sure if this is the way to go but a recent conversation with my US based cousin who interviews candidates for the company he works with assured me I'm on the right track. He says nobody wants to hire a graduate that needs to be trained. They always look for people who already know how to do the job, meaning hiring people who already have the necessary skills. Interestingly, the last thing they see is where you graduated from. So you could say that a certificate in Linux, AWS or any other IT course would carry more weight than your graduation scroll from "XX" university.
Well, that's the message I got anyway.

So, homeschool for now is taking online courses such as from UDEMY and also other foundation studies such as math, English, science, occasional geography n history.

Start learning on Udemy today!

CONCLUSION
There are so may factors to consider when it comes to our children's education. What works for one family may not work for another.
#1 Factor - Consider the child. Will he/she enjoy homeschooling? What is he/she comfortable with? My eldest opted for homeschool but my 2nd son would rather stay in school.

#2 Factor - Work backwards. Meaning start with career choices, then see what your child will need to do to get there? At a young age kids may not know what they want to do in the future. So it would make sense to play safe at first and plan to sit for the common exams. Once they have an inkling what they would like to venture in, you can "modify and adjust" your education plan.

I'm sure you can come up with many more factors. There are many different options, it's just a matter of which one you DARE to take.
Unfortunately, some family entertainment can be expensive. In this time when the economy is suffering and parents are struggling to keep financially afloat, expensive entertainment is out of the question. Thank goodness there are still some cheap but fun ideas for your kids to enjoy. It doesn't matter if your kids are young or already in their teens, here are some ideas to keep your kids busy:

6 Cheap and Fun Ideas For The Family

1. FAMILY GAMES
Games are some of the best sources of fun for the whole family. Board games are an excellent example. If you’ve got any board games lying around, get them out and give them a whirl. Games like these encourage interaction between family members and help with bonding, which we often find ourselves doing too little of these days.

Apart from board games, other alternatives include card games (cards are readily available and cheap to get hold of. If you don’t know any good card games, it’s also easy to find the rules for some on the internet) and activities like charades. Family games are great for children of all ages – even teenagers will often take part (with a bit of resistance to begin with!)

2. BUILD CAMPS
For younger kids, something fun to do is building indoor camps. Get some clothes pegs, some strings, and some bed sheets and you can help your kids build their own bedroom camp. Once built, kids will often play in these for hours. Many kids also love to sleep over in their own home-built camp.

3. ARTS AND CRAFTS
This is a classic, but it’s a great option because arts and crafts can be really cheap. Why not go on a walk with your kids and get them to collect interesting sticks, stones, shells, feathers etc. Once home, you can get them to string them together to form hanging ornaments, or use them to decorate home-made picture frames and so on.

4. PLAYING BALL
Another classic, ball games are great when the weather is good. Balls are cheap, and generally provide a lot of entertainment, as well as giving kids (including teenagers) a chance to blow off steam, use up energy and get some exercise all at once.

5. INVITE FRIENDS ROUND
Let your kids invite a few friends over for the day. It’s true that sometimes a group of kids can end up causing a riot, but generally things don’t get out of hand and your kids will always have a lot of fun with a few friends around. The more friends there are, the more easily they come up with their own (usually free) entertainment. It’s a winning solution. And, if you really want to make the most of the opportunity, why not let your kids plan a feast and have their friends each bring something along to eat?

6. GET COOKING
Some kids will be more resilient to this idea than others, but many kids enjoy cooking once they get started. So why not try and teach your kids a bit about cooking? Make it fun for them in the process and they’ll love it. Pizzas are a great option as kids can decorate them any way they wish with the ingredients you’re using.

7. EXERCISE TOGETHER AS A FAMILY
Get that heart pumping and blood moving. It's no fun to exercise alone. Have your kids go for a jog or power walk around the neighborhood or at the nearest park. Don't want to go outdoors? You can simply search for a workout routine on Youtube and everyone just follow along.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06434176856107304383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9988715.post-49987928307069919452015-09-30T09:50:00.000+08:002015-09-30T11:01:40.729+08:005 Reasons Why Your Children Should Play With Building Block Toys When it comes to toddlers and preschoolers, play is very important. Using building blocks requires your child to put them in a position so that they do not topple over. As a result, hand-eye coordination improves the more the child plays. The act of grasping the blocks itself serves as good practice for gripping objects, and strengthens the fingers and hands of the child.

2. Mental Stimulation

Your child learns to think logically when playing with building blocks. After a few tries at building something and watching the blocks topple over, your child will learn that the blocks have to be arranged and placed properly to prevent that from happening. An older child will also realize that a stronger base can be made if you arrange most of the blocks at the bottom. Logical thinking skills are crucial in a child’s intellectual development.

3. Math And Vocabulary Skills

Studies have shown that the inclusion of building blocks in playtime helps develop language and mathematical skills among children. Language skills develop when the child learns the names of the colors, shapes and sizes of building blocks. Mathematical skills are sharpened when a child learns to add up or subtract the number of building blocks required to build a structure. As such, it’s easy to see why building blocks are a great preschool learning tool.

4. Improves Creativity

Children learn how to create different structures using building blocks, and this stimulates their creative mind. Thus building blocks offer a good base to encourage a child’s creative abilities and not just the logical.

5. Encourages Positive Social Interaction

Building blocks are the type of toys that a child can share with others. By encouraging them to play together they learn how to interact and cooperate. This is among the first forms of teamwork your child can engage in.

Do not underestimate the learning benefits that come with playing simple toys such as building blocks.
Obesity has been linked to many health problems and deadly diseases. If your child is obese, he or she runs an increased risk of developing:

Type II diabetes

Osteoarthritis

Sleep apnea

Heart disease or stroke

Cancer

Gallbladder disease

Gout

High blood pressure

Everyone is different, and that includes children. With 2 identical looking kids, one may be obese and the other may be healthy. There are many genetic and body frame factors to consider. But basically, obesity is defined as a condition where someone is "grossly fat or overweight" depending on their Body Mass Index (BMI).

This book is worth your investment. It has valuable information that will help you to combat childhood obesity. It has methods and guidelines that are effective if implemented.

What is BMI?

To understand whether your child is obese, you need to determine her BMI score. BMI calculation does not measure body fat directly, but rather uses global averages to see where your child ranks against her peers that are the same age, height and weight.

Body mass index is defined as a measurement of normal weight, overweight and obesity using comparative height and weight charts.

How Can I Measure My Child's BMI to Determine If He Is Obese?

Search for the term "Childhood BMI Calculator" on the Internet. There are literally thousands of free online body mass index calculators which produce an instant score. Simply input the birth date and year, gender, height and weight of your child. Some of these calculators may also ask for the height of your child's genetic parents.

Without parental height considered, a 10 year old girl that measures 4 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 70 pounds is considered in the 48th BMI percentile. That means that she is heavier than 48% of girls her age and height, a healthy measurement.

What BMI Percentile is Healthy, Overweight and Obese?

A child that scores between 0 and 5 or 10 on the BMI percentile chart for kids is considered underweight. Between 5 or 10 and 80 or 85 is considered a healthy weight. A score of 80 to 90 or 95 is considered overweight, and any score over 90 is a sign of a marginally or definitely obese child. Do not forget, these are just averages. If you are concerned your child is obese or overweight, schedule an appointment with your doctor or health professional.

What Do You Do If Your Child Is Obese?

Obesity can be hereditary, to some extent. If you and your spouse are obese, your kids have a higher tendency to be so as well. However, health professionals, fitness experts and doctors agree that your diet and level of physical activity are what ultimately decide how much you weigh and how fit you are.

So get your child eating lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Keep them active, exercising at least 2.5 hours per week. Make sure they drink lots of water and get plenty of rest. These simple steps can reverse obesity, delivering the self-esteem and health that every child deserves.
Well, it is expiring sooooon.
Oh no! I hardly started my scrapbook pages.
Anyway, I got some done last week. I have 40 pages to fill. I'm only like on page 8. Yikes!

Anyway, here's what I've accomplished so far with MyMemories Suite... which is the scrapbook program I'm using. You'll see some blank spaces and that's where my journaling is suppose to be. My coupon is with Photobook and so I import the pages I did on MyMemories Suite onto the Photobook program.
NoQ Store is the e-commerce arm of Times Publishing, one of the most reputable names in printing, publishing, distribution and retail in the Asia Pacific.

They generously offered me a S$30 (approximately RM 75) coupon to shop at their store. In return, I'm writing this review for them.

They were also generous enough to offer a 15% discount exclusively for you, my blog readers.

EXCLUSIVE 15% DISCOUNT:

Code: MAMASBAG
Valid from 11 August - 31 December 2014

My kids (especially my eldest daughter) were very excited. My daughter is always moaning "I have no more books to read". She is a true bookworm and tears through a book in a day, if not within hours. She knew exactly what book she wanted: To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. My second son was clamoring for Beast Quest books. Unfortunately, there were not that many Beast Quest books but he did find 2 that he hadn't read yet. For the younger kids, I was happy to see a good choice of Berenstain Bears books. All my kids loved that series. I settled on the one titled "Computer Trouble". How appropriate and just what I need for my kids.

Well, I was happy to learn that shipping is free. However, this perk is only for those residing in West Malaysia. For East Malaysian customers, shipping is free with minimum spend of RM 120.

Ordering the books was no hassle. The difficult part was trying to limit the number of books to fit my budget. Hahahah.

The books took 13 days to arrive. It was a little longer than we wished for but I believe some of the books had to be sourced, hence the delay. No matter, the kids were thrilled. My daughter is almost finished with her book and gives it a thumbs up. I'm sure she'll ask me to read it.

Well, thanks NoQ for the chance to try out your store. It looks like they offer good deals quite often. Just today I received a notification that there's a special discount for Malaysians in honor of Merdeka Day. Malaysian customers get 20% off on their orders but this treat is for ONE DAY ONLY - 30 August 2014. Use code MALND2014 at checkout.

When teaching my kids the alphabets, I always like to start with letters from their name. That way, the first thing they can spell is their name.

Here is one activity I found that helps them spell their name. Have them arrange the letters of their name to form a snowman. I'm a bit lazy here and opted out of making snowman hats and a scarf. But if you want cuter snowmen, I'd encourage you to do that. I guess we could do the same thing and make caterpillars too.

Gluing and pasting is ideal when kids are still don't know how to write or are still struggling to control their pencil movements. My little girl here really enjoyed this activity. She wanted to do more. This helped her learn not only to put the letters of her name in the right order but also to put the alphabets the right way up.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06434176856107304383noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9988715.post-42834814614375367582014-04-04T09:55:00.000+08:002014-04-04T09:57:29.816+08:00Strengthening Basic Multiplication Skills in ChildrenYesterday, as I presented my student with a worksheet of basic multiplication questions, she started to yawn (unintentionally, of course). I've been working with this kid for the past 2 months to really strengthen her multiplication skills. We've already worked on the individual times tables: 2 - 12. Unfortunately, I only see her 3x a weeks and I doubt she even looks at the multiplication tables the other days. BUT the only way any child is going to be an expert with basic multiplication is to practice, practice, practice everyday until they get it.

The problem is, how to make them practice without boring them out of their minds?

So, this is what we did yesterday... We created a game out of the multiplication grid.

She wrote in the ones that she absolutely knew... ones that she could answer in 2 seconds. The ones where she hesitated, we put a colored paper. So now, she can take home this game, and fill up the missing blanks with counters that show the correct answer. This way, she only practices the ones that she has been having problems remembering. It is sort of like 'target practice'.

So if you have a child that has already learned all the multiplication tables but are still struggling to remember certain ones, this is one way to target those troubled areas and have fun at the same time. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06434176856107304383noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9988715.post-48986930151560549032014-03-31T00:30:00.000+08:002014-03-31T00:30:00.845+08:00Brainzy: Making Computer Time Fun and Educational For Preschool to 1st GradeI think many of us parents have a hard time controlling the number of hours our young children are on the computer. It is almost to the point of addiction... or is it just my kids? Every day I hear the same question, "Mom, can I use the computer?"
You can't really ban computer from their lives. So the next best thing would be to make sure they are using their computer time wisely.

Learning does not always equal "boring". Kids can play computer games and be learning at the same time. Brainzy is one such program.

Try a free trial of the Brainzy educational games program today!

This is a paid program. I know there are many free programs out there but not all of them are good quality. There is a free trial for Brainzy. Give it a try before you decide if it is worth your money. See if your children like the games. If they are having fun and you see learning taking place, you should consider adding Brainzy to your education resources.

Go check it out for yourself.
I am currently homeschooling 1 child and have another 2 going to school. Unfortunately, teachers here are not very creative. The culture is such that kids are drilled to pass exams. My kids constantly tell me how boring their homework is.

I am not one to leave all the teaching to the school. I believe as a mother, I am still their number 1 teacher. And so I am always on the net, scouring for fun educational stuff for them. I can only hope to keep their love for learning alive.

So I'm here to tell you about a website that offers a variety of fun worksheets and workbooks...

Education.com provides printable workbooks to help children learn key skills in math, reading and writing. These workbooks are suitable for children in preschool through fifth grade.

New Workbooks on Education.com!

I've downloaded quite a few from their website. If you are seeking fun worksheets for your kids, I encourage you to check out this website. You can download some for free but there is a limit every month. If you want to enjoy the full privileges, there is a fee to pay. They offer a subscription service that grants access to all workbooks. The quality of worksheets you get makes it pretty worth it.

Have a look and tell me if this resource will help in your child's education.
This Disney 3D animated musical takes place in an imaginary land called Arendelle. Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's chilly Nordic-based classic The Snow Queen, Frozen is centered around sisters Anna and Elsa, daughters of the King and Queen of Arendelle. While one sister (Elsa) stays isolated filled with fear, the other sister (Anna) is bursting with energy and life. A real contrast in character. This Disney Frozen Sparkle Anna of Arendelle Doll delivers the younger of the two sisters in faithful detail. Let's step inside the frozen fantasy environment of Arendelle and take a closer look at young Anna.
Of course there must be a cake. Some of the kids were asking for ice cream cake. Buying one is quite expensive. So, once again, I had to turn to Mr. Google to see if I could make one myself. This is what I came up with at the end: Oreo Ice Cream Cake.

It's pretty easy to make and the kids (plus friends) gave it a thumbs up.

Here's how I did it:

1. Baked a Lemon Cake. Of course I didn't do it from scratch. Just got a box of the shelves (Pillsbury). Most people use chocolate cake but the tangy lemon really blended nicely with my fudge topping.

2. Slice the cake into 2 layers so you can sandwich the ice cream in between. Put one layer at the bottom of your cake tray.

3. Crush a packet of Oreos. If you want more Oreos, just crush more. Mix it with your choice of ice cream. Vanilla, chocolate or Cookies N Cream flavor works well.

4. The ice cream has to be a little bit soft. Scoop out the ice cream and make a layer on top of the cake.

5. Put another layer of cake on top of the ice cream. Put back in the freezer so the ice cream hardens up.

6. Meanwhile, make some chocolate hot fudge . You can find a recipe that you like but I used this recepi:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup evaporated milk
1 1/2 tbs butter

7. Pour the chocolate hot fudge on top of the cake layer. Return the cake to the freezer.

8. Just before you serve the cake, top off the cake with swirls of whip cream. Add a little bit more crushed Oreos to that.

I hope my directions make sense. You're basically just putting one layer on top of another. Modify to your liking.

Leave a comment to tell me what you think.
My kids tell me that they sell it at the school canteen too (RM1 each). It is so easy to make and the kids love it. If you're out of ideas on what to pack for your kid's recess time, this is something to consider.

All you need is bread, hotdogs and a rolling pin. Just put the hotdogs (here we call them sausages) in boiling water to cook.

Use the rolling pin to flatten the bread. Place a hotdog on top of it and roll it up.

Fry it in oil. Make sure the oil is not too hot as it can get burned really fast. Add ketchup, chilli sauce or mayonnaise. Its also yummy just eating it plain.

<img alt=""A child with autism (three years old) po..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted" height="186" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/72/Opening_a_window_to_the_autistic_brain.jpg/300px-Opening_a_window_to_the_autistic_brain.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="200" />

I am a true believer that a child's first and most important teacher is the parents. Teaching a child is no easy feat. Any parent will attest to that.

As I strive to teach my own children, I often feel frustrated when they don't listen to my instructions, turn a deaf ear to what I'm saying, resist my attempts to teach, throw a tantrum or give me a bad attitude. My patience is constantly tested. I wish to cultivate in them good characteristics and be well behaved. I believe this is the desire of all, if not most parents. However, children are as varied as snowflakes: each different and unique. Each come with their own set of challenges.

I cannot imagine how much more difficult it is for parents with special needs children. I have a friend who has an autistic child. I'm amazed at her diligence, patience and strength in teaching this son of hers. I've seen the improvements in his behavior over the years. So much so that he is able to attend a normal school instead of a school for special needs children. Let me make it clear that he is not 'cured' from autism but rather, he has been taught the skills to function in our society.

I believe the most important step she took was to accept, from a very early stage, that her son was different and needed special help. I can see that awareness for special education and autism is increasing, especially in Asia. More parents have a better understanding of autism and are willing to take positive steps to help their child. Before, most old folks would brand a child with autistic traits as disobedient, stupid and useless. Some of them would even mistreat the child. All this because of their lack of understanding and ignorance.

We are lucky that we have the internet to do research. This is our advantage over the older generations. Surfing around the net, you can learn what is autism and read the many experiences of parents with autistic children. You can find teaching supplies such as toy games for learning, flash cards, activity kits, communication pictures, token boards and charts, visual timers, social skills curriculums and ABA language cards. There are forums you can join to gain support and ideas from other parents in the same boat. You can also search for centers that provide services to treat and educate your child.

No doubt it is difficult to raise a child with special needs. It takes lots of patience, dedication, prayer and unconditional love. Do not let pride or ignorance prevent you from giving your child the opportunity to learn new skills. With the right resources, support and education, they can improve. The benefits of early intervention should not be disregarded.
She experimented with the recipe and finally found the right amount of ingredients that work. So, before I proceed to show you how make this yummy 'kuih', let me first say thanks to Aunty Karen Tam.
First thing you need to know is the cup that is used for measuring. It is not the standard cup but rather a standard coffee mug (like below). I did attempt to convert the recipe to the standard measurements. Unfortunately, I have lost that piece of paper where I noted down the conversion. So, until I get those measurements down again, just find a mug like below. And to tell you the truth, it really is easier just to measure with this mug when doing this recipe.

Ingredients

(Remember, the size of the 'cup' here is referring to the mug above. Please restrain from laughing :) )

Ingredients A:
1 cup plain flour
1 cup tapioca flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Air Kapur (betel lime water)
3 cups pandan water (screwpine)

Ingredients B:
1 1/2 cups sugar (Mixture of white and brown sugar. Ratio of white:brown sugar depends on your preference. As for me, I just use 3-4 tbsp. of brown sugar)
1/2 cup water

Ingredients C:
100g grated young coconut (Here at my wet market, I just buy 1 packet which is RM1)
Pinch of salt

METHOD

1. Combine 1 cup of plain flour, tapioca flour and salt. Do not need to sift.

2. Add 3 cups of pandan (screwpine) water. Add little by little to initially make a paste. This way it is easier to smooth out the lumps. Once everything looks smooth (no lumps), add in the rest of the water.

How to make pandan water
What you do is take a few fresh leaves of pandan, cut into small pieces and put them in the blender. Add a little water and blend it. Strain to get just the juice. Give the pulp a squeeze to get more juice out. Then just add water to make 3 cups.

3. In a separate bowl, dissolve the sugar in 1/2 cup of hot water. Then add it into the flour and pandan mixture.
4. Last of all, add in about 1/2 - 1 tsp of 'air kapur'. You can get this ingredient at the Indian stores. I was told that you could substitute with alkaline water (Cantonese people call it "kan sui"). However, I have not tried it with any substitute. They say this ingredient helps to harden the 'kuih', so it is not soft and mushy.

5. Sift everything into a tray for steaming. The 'batter' is actually quite watery. I usually have lumps of 'kapur' in my sift. So I just smoothen it out on my sift.

6. Steam for 30 minutes. The more brown sugar you use, the more brown color your 'kuih' will be. After you steam, there will be some water on top of your layer of 'kuih'. Just pour it away.

7. Let cool completely. After cooling down, I like to put mine in the fridge for like 5 minutes. This is just to make the 'kuih' harden a little bit more.

8. Cut into squares and roll them in your grated coconut. Don't forget to add a little salt to your coconut first.
Kinderdijk Champions Child Safety Education with Aprica and Graco Baby Products Roadshow

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 October 2013 – As every parent holds their new-born infant, the overwhelming feeling of unconditional love and care envelopes the child the moment the baby is held in their arms. What’s more, the smile of the baby brings a sweet and warm joy to the parents knowing that their precious child is happy, feeling safe and protected. Nonetheless, deriving the reason behind the smile of the baby is what pulls experts at Aprica and Graco to engineer simple modern solutions to best enrich every family's journey to make safety the child's companion, inside and outside.

To ensure that infants grow happily in a safe environment, there are little things which parents can do to protect them from the more serious injuries that can lead to disabilities and even fatalities. Accidents can occur indoors and outdoors, and most of them can be prevented when safe and prudent precautions are taken. For instance, the increase in car accidents involving infants and children every year is a dreadful reality which highlights the issue of child safety.

A crash test analysis conducted by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) in 2010 revealed that an adult passenger will not have the required strength to prevent an infant or a child from being thrown forward during a collision at any speed applied. More frighteningly, at a vehicle driving at the speed of a mere 50km per hour, an unsecured infant weighing 7.0kg will actually be thrown forward at a powerful force of 240kg/sq2, which is an equivalent impact of an adult falling from a five-storey building. These numbers reveal that infants are the most vulnerable passengers and a high percentage of children in Malaysia were unfortunately killed during road accidents; more than any other causes known to date.

With this in mind, Kinderdijk Sdn Bhd launched a one-week Child Safety Roadshow Campaign that centres on Kinderdijk’s commitment to strongly remind parents and guardians to be wary and to take all necessary precautions to safeguard their children’s safety. The roadshow held from 14th to 20th October 2013 in Mid Valley Megamall, also showcased a line of Aprica and Graco child safety car seats, strollers, baby carriers and travel systems, all of which are designed in line with the principles of paediatrics and childcare engineering to enhance childcare and create a fun family life.

Gwei Tze-Co, Managing Director, Kinderdijk Sdn Bhd said, “Based on the statistics, more parents seem to assume that holding their child or letting them sit on the lap is enough to protect them from the impact of accidents. It is also becoming a worrying trend that the usage of child safety car seats and travel systems are not something that most Malaysian parents take seriously. Parents must understand that children are the most precious cargo on-board; hence safety should not be undervalued, nor taken for granted as it can benefit them in the long-run.”

“According to the study conducted by MIROS, an infant will be flung forward at a high velocity albeit being held by an adult during a vehicle collision at only 30km per hour and most likely will be killed as the direct result of such violent impact. Thus, being equipped with the right and comfortable baby travelling equipment can provide a peace of mind to parents when using the equipment while travelling,” said Jenny Kwan, Senior Sales Manager, Hong Kong & ASEAN, Newell Rubbermaid Asia Pacific. “Furthermore, parents need to practice buckling up and young children should be taught on how to use them. Safety is crucial to child development and it is imperative to cultivate the prudent habit from young.”

Understanding the Reason behind the Baby’s Smile

Psychologists have found that babies are the most happiest when they feel secure and safe in a trusted environment. A baby’s smile can bring wonders and eases the stress away. To ensure babies are safe, experts at Aprica are designing products that are developed with scientific approaches and medical science on babies and childcare engineering to provide comfort to the baby. Likewise, Graco is providing safety solutions that make childcare easier with products which are fully convenient and intuitive, catering to making a fun family life.

In light of this, Aprica has formed the 8.3.8 Principle to identify, protect and nurture the baby’s body and mind to create the best environment for babies with the development of comfortable baby products. Aprica has drawn out ‘8 Medical Structures to protect and nurture babies’ from the ‘8 Babies’ immaturity in body to be protected’ structure and ‘3 Baby’s emotional growth to be encouraged’ concept identified through researches on baby paediatrics and childcare engineering.

“At Kinderdijk, we understand that care and safety are essential to keep the baby comfortable and secure. The Aprica and Graco products distributed by Kinderdijk are innovatively engineered and carefully designed to provide convenience and security to parents, especially those who are leading a modern lifestyle,” Gwei added. Given that comfort and safety are vital to form the foundation of childcare devices, the following are the standards that guide Aprica engineers to develop baby products essential to make babies happy.
Although homeschooling seems favorable, the decision to homeschool or not cannot be made without doing some homework. Many factors have to be considered such as the home environment, parents' work commitment and also the child's attitude.

Whether you are homeschooling or not, you're welcome to share why you chose one over the other and how that is working out for your children.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06434176856107304383noreply@blogger.com1
