Facebook, Twitter, Flixster, LinkedIn: They make up the fastest growing segment of the Internet. In fact, two-thirds of online users access "member communities," which include social networks and blogs, according to research conducted this year by The Nielsen Company. They have even overtaken e-mail as the fourth most popular online category, and they are growing twice as fast as any other category.
“Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience,” says John Burbank, CEO of Nielsen Online. “Social networking will continue to alter not just the global online landscape, but the consumer experience at large.”
But are these sites just fun, and a great way to procrastinate, or are they useful in business? How are they being applied in our world of languages and localization?
It turns out that the fifth most visited social network internationally, LinkedIn, is the most popular spot for localization professionals. Unlike many other networking sites, LinkedIn grew as a result of "professionals" connecting with one another more than "friends." In its first few years, it was known as an insiders approach to job seeking and job posting. But in the last couple of years it has broadened into a rich community for all types of industries. And in 2008, LinkedIn boosted its population significantly by building a strong international presence.
As the "localization" of LinkedIn continues (it is currently the most popular professional network in Europe with more than five million users and is available in several European languages, but is not heavily used in Asia yet), so does its popularity among localization professionals. Within the language and localization industry, it has become a place to post news, ask questions, discuss industry trends, and conduct surveys. It is a way to educate yourself, build your connections, and get yourself and your company noticed by prospective localization users. McElroy Translation employees even introduced its new (McElroy+ Machine) Translation suite of services on LinkedIn.
Have you linked up? Here are a few of the key ways you can participate.
First, build a personal profile. It is free, requiring your e-mail address and a password. Once you have provided that information, you are ready to build your profile. You will get the most out of LinkedIn by completing as much of the profile as possible. That includes your current and past employment, your industry focus, your picture, and your education. LinkedIn will let you know how complete your profile is. So if you add your picture or your past work experience, it will indicate that your profile is further along.
LinkedIn allows you to get recommendations as a third-party "endorsement" of your work. This is not just for folks seeking jobs—it is a way to elevate your overall profile. You can ask another LinkedIn user to provide a short recommendation that will show up on your profile.
Once you have created your profile, you can always go back to edit. But most of the time you will use the home page instead, which now will be tailored to your profile. For example, if you have indicated you are in the localization industry, your home page will show upcoming localization events that have been posted by other users. It also will show interesting discussions and questions from users within your industry. Answering a question or participating in a discussion will boost your LinkedIn status and make you more visible within the industry. Remember, these types of connections can lead to all kinds of new professional opportunities. A quick view of your home page each day—no more than 15 minutes—is a great way to keep up in the industry and build your network.
Next, make sure your company is LinkedIn. The company profiles on LinkedIn have become more popular in the last year, making the creating of one a great extension to your company website and/or blog. And the LinkedIn metrics that display on the company page validate your company and its employees. For example, McElroy Translation’s company page shows which McElroy employees are LinkedIn and the companies and groups they most often visit. In McElroy’s case, employees are most linked to Common Sense Advisory and the American Translator’s Association.
One person from the company should create the profile and all employees should link their individual profiles to it. McElroy Translation formalized the process by having a person in charge of the company page and then reminding employees to link themselves to that page. Linking to the company page is accomplished by editing the current employer section within the individual’s profile. Once the company page is up and running, it can be edited by any linked employee (although it is best if one person is in charge of updating). Its usefulness is extended by linking to the company website or blog, or even by creating a short company blog on LinkedIn.
Now that you have created personal and company profiles, join network groups. There are some fabulous localization industry networks on LinkedIn. A few of the most active networks are The Localization Professional, managed by Serge Gladkoff, with more than 3,000 members; the Localization and Globalization Fusion Society, managed by Common Sense Advisory, with more than 1,000 members; and, the Globalization and Localization Association’s new discussion group that already has almost 900 members. All of these, as well as many others, can be found by conducting a search of LinkedIn groups (through the search field on any LinkedIn page).
Once you’ve joined some networks, use them effectively to meet with folks who have a common interest in business—network as you would if you were at a trade conference. You can display your industry knowledge by participating in some of the discussions. You can post news to all members of the group—maybe a new report you’ve conducted, or an article you’ve published (always provide the link). You also can ask questions and get useful answers. Recently I posted a question about RFPs in the localization industry. The answers I received helped immensely as I wrote questions on RFPs for an upcoming survey from GALA. Again, limit yourself to a few minutes each day or designate one day per week when you spend 30 minutes on your groups.
Like many things in life, the more you use LinkedIn, the more valuable it can become. At the same time, the more you use it, the more time you can waste! It is important to strike a balance to make sure you are taking effective advantage of networking opportunities without shortchanging other important activities. Many clients will ask their freelance translators to sign contracts or work for hire agreements before beginning work. While these are often quite harmless in nature and not something to be concerned about, it's important to read what you're signing and to make sure that you're not agreeing to a clause that you will later regret.These contract clauses are mostly applicable if you work through translation agencies. For example, you should carefully consider, possibly with the advice of a lawyer, whether you will agree to terms such as:- Agreeing not to get paid until the end client pays the agency. Of all the terms that translators are asked to accept, this is probably the most difficult. In one sense, it's understandable that an agency doesn't want to take the risk of having to pay tens of thousands of dollars to translators for a project that the agency itself is never paid for. In addition, if a translator returns poor quality work, the agency doesn't want to be responsible in the event that the end client refuses to pay. On the other hand, the agency's role as a middleman between the translator and the end client involves some financial risks, such as non-payment on the part of the end client. If you agree to this type of clause, it is important to realize that you are accepting some risk of non-payment yourself.- Agreeing to indemnify (hold harmless) the client against lawsuits and/or claims resulting from your translation. If you sign a contract with this type of clause, make sure that you carry your own professional liability or errors and omissions (E&O) insurance in case one of your clients is sued because of an error in your translation. The client should have a quality control system in place so that an error by one translator doesn't have a disastrous effect on the final project, but not every client will have this. This type of contract clause is more of a concern if you work for direct clients, who may be less likely to have your work edited or proofread before distributing it.- Agreeing not to accept or solicit work from the agency's clients. Most intermediaries between end clients and freelancers, not just translation agencies, require this type of non-compete agreement. It's perfectly reasonable to ask that you not go behind the agency's back and ask the end client to hire you to translate for them directly. However unless you and the agency compare your client lists (something the agency will probably be unwilling to do) you can't really know that you're not working for one of them.- Agreeing not to subcontract work to another translator. This is another fairly common and reasonable clause, just make sure you read it before signing, and if you commit to doing all the work yourself, don't share it with someone else.- Agreeing to abide by confidentiality standards. Especially if you work in legal, financial or patent translation, you will probably come into contact with trade secrets, confidential financial information, patent applications, etc. If you sign this type of document, again it is important to read and abide by its provisions. For example, financial translators might be required to agree not to engage in insider trading as a result of their knowledge of a company's financial information before it is released to the public. This type of document is often referred to as a non-disclosure agreement or NDA.- Agreeing to submit to a credit check, criminal background check or financial review in order to be bonded. Like the confidentiality agreement described above, there are good reasons why some translators have to be bonded (insured against stealing because of information that they have access to).For example if you work with a bank's clients' financial information, or translate information about a mutual fund's identity verification procedures, you have access to information that would allow you to steal money from the company or its clients. In order to be bonded, most insurance or bonding companies will investigate your financial records and/or criminal background. Just make sure you are clear on what you're agreeing to when you sign this clause, and that you understand what information about you the company is going to collect or ask for. If you have a past criminal background, make sure you understand what types of charges, arrests or convictions must be reported.If you find a clause in a contract that you don't want to sign, you have a few options. You could cross out the clause in question, modify it, or refuse to sign the contract completely. Whether or not this is successful depends on the client. Some agencies will agree to a change, others will refuse to work with you if you don't sign their contract. The most important thing is to realize that if you sign a contract, its terms are legally enforceable, even if your client tells you, "I can't imagine we would ever really enforce that..."If the client wouldn't enforce the clause, it shouldn't be in their contract. Remember that although it is intimidating to be presented with a contract as a prerequisite for a certain job, you are an equal party to the contract and are entitled to object to terms that are unfair to you. Also, although contracts don't appear to be negotiable most of the time, they often are negotiable, and in any event you are highly unlikely to lose a client simply because you have questioned one of their contract's clauses.

Once you have managed to find enough freelance work to keep yourself busy for around 20 hours a week, you might consider terminating your employment contract and devoting the extra time to attracting new business. Top-professionals don't give their rates until they have seen the job .

If the job postings are sketchy no professional of sound mind would ever tell the pricing in advance without having seen at least a part of the project.

Some body has rightly mentiond in a forum that the Translators are neither copy shops nor fast food restaurants with price lists at their door.

How shall the translator know what the specifics of a particular project are? Speaking the language? That the project has a certain number of words?
No. They can not.

31 Email marketing tips for freelance translators

1.Prepare a good CV. There are many sites in the net which provide guidance how to write a good CV.

2. Collect email addresses of agencies from Internet.

3.Contact agencies in batches. The amount of agencies to contact on any one day may depend on how busy you are. For example You can contact from 50 to 200 in one go. Just be consistent. DO it everyday. Yes, everyday. It is slow at first. Keep sending emails. The time you invest in that now will pay off later. Some people prefer to do most marketing when they have a quieter period.

4. When to send emails?-Some days of weeks are best for email marketing. Your emails are more likely to be read if the PM's of agencies are not too busy themselves, i.e. definitely don't send on Monday mornings/Friday afternoons. Instead send emails on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

5. Do not send your CV as an attachment.Do not send any attachment either.

6. send CV to an agency which explicitly work with your language pairs.

7.If you specialize in a certain field (e.g. law, engineering), you should write specifically to agencies that are specialized in the same field.

8. Do not specify rates in your emails, it’s better to discuss rates later. However you may state your rates if you do not want to be contacted by agencies who pay less.

9. Increase your response rate. If possible follow up your email with a phone call to the company concerned.

10. Always start with a brief introduction giving language pair, qualifications/years of experience, specialisations and services offered.You may state that a detailed CV is available on request.

11. DO not lose heart. It can take ages before an agency actually contacts you with a job.Your marketing will pay off eventually! 10. Focus on the countries where your foreign languages are spoken. Just keep doing it to increase the response rate. The more people you contact the more responses you have.

12. Use the most common fonts possible -Times, Arial etc. My favourite is Trebuchet.

13. Don't expect an immediate response.Sometimes it might take more than a year for a specific agency to need your specific services.

14.Put up your detailed CV in HTML format in your website or blog as well. Having your CV right there on the web makes it easier for you to fill in the online agency forms by copying/pasting and you can direct your client to that.

15. Follow up in one month and then in three months with another e-mail saying what you've done in the mean time (eg what new experience you have), any new skills you've learnt, and that you are mostly available for the following months.

16.If the agency offers a lot of languages (say, more than 30), then they might not mind adding you to their database.

17. Target agencies that offer languages similar to yours, or offer languages spoken in your region
18. Make your e-mail fit for the recipient. The more tightly targeted the e-mail, the bigger the chance that you'll get a favourable response. The more general or generic the e-mail, the bigger chance your e-mail will be a perfect fit for the round file.

19. You should write specifically to agencies that are specialized in the same field, and say so.

21. People don't read "below the fold". In other words, you must grab their attention before they scroll down, because more often than not, they won't scroll down at all, but simply close/delete and move on.

SO the advice would be -do not overdo things. Always respect your recipient.

28. Try to be visible in the field. Write an article and get it published. Most translation portals like Go translators etc.,will gladly publish your article.

29.And, best of all, is to make that the clients come to you, not that you come to them. If you are the one who approaches them first,you will have to comply to their "requirements" - all those online databases, tests, etc. And all those databases take a lot of time with no result very often (lot of wasted time). And if the clients approach you (vice versa), you can already tell "Sorry, I have no time for tests", "Here is my contact info, have no time/wish to fill in all your databases"..

30. Have your own web site. Own a URL (a personal site) that is in the search engines.
Get good rankings for your site. Fill it with good, relevant content (write a blog on translation), obviously a CV-page and a page about services and how to contact you, link to good sites and link back from your profile on various sites.

31. If you have a web site, put your downloadable CV there, . The best format should be a PDF . It will be lighter, compatible with any system, and in most cases virus-free.

Consistency reasons - very helpful for documents that contain sections you've translated before (or that have since been slightly amended). If you are often asked to translate several documents relating to the same transaction (such as various contracts with similar contents). In those cases, CAT tools can save quite a lot of work.It really depends on the type of work you do. If most of your projects are one-offs, the investment may not be worth it for you.

One of the biggest benefits is the glossary function. It offers the possibility to link three glossaries to a given document as you work, so that any terms in your glossaries will be highlighted in the text as you work - saves hours of thinking "Now I know I've had that before - but where is it?" You can add terms to your glossaries as you work with just a few key strokes, thus keeping your glossaries up-to-date with minimal effort. Context search is another useful feature - this enables you to highlight a word or phrase and then search in your current memory (or all your memories if you have a Big Translation Memory set up too) to see how you've translated this before, even if the whole sentence hasn't already been translated.There's the invaluable knowledge that your work is being saved to the memory as you type and will still be there if you have a power cut or you accidentally lose the document - it's saved my bacon a few times!Give one of the trial versions a go and see what you think before you commit yourself? Wordfast has a good internet support group and people will be happy to answer your questions either there or in the ProZ.com forums if you get stuck.

You may also start with OmegaT. Why? It is open source and you can get it for free, it is really easy to use, and the developers have made a tutorial for beginners which gives you step-by-step instructions and assumes that you know nothing about CAT tools. In addition they have a group for users where you can ask for help. I think this is ideal for a beginner. Then when you have tried it, you'll see whether you'll have use for it or not. Then you can stick with OmegaT or move on to commercial products, which cost you a lot of money and I assume are more complicated to use, but will give you access to clients who want you to use them. If you have no such clients, it's matter of taste really.

Everywhere you turn in Berlin, you are faced with more and more ‘Denglish’ spelled ‘Denglisch’ in German. It refers to the Anglicization of the German language. The signs say ‘Sale’ and ‘Coffee to Go’ and ‘Free’ although it is, of course, possible to express the same things with German words. Thanks to the global reach of the US entertainment industry, the new English vocabulary of the computer-world, and globalization in general, English words and phrases mark shops and companies in Germany as current, trendy, young and hip. And who doesn’t want to be young and hip?

How to decide Spanish Translation Rates?

One of the first things a translator has to do is decide what kind of Spanish translation rates to set. This can be a difficult thing to do when first starting out because many other translators are reluctant to share their rates with fellow translators. Well, before you do set your Spanish translation rates, there are some things you should be aware of.

First of all, translators set rates differently. Most translators charge by the word, but there are times when translators charge by the hour, or even by the page. The reason that translators charge by word is because the amount of words on a page can vary. It's not fair to translators to get paid by the page because the client could put more words on a single page in order for the cost of the job to be less.

As I mentioned before, one of the hardest things for translators to do is to actually set their English and Spanish translation rates. Well, rates can be decided by a number of factors. One of the factors that decides translation rates is the language pair that you translate in. For example, if you are a translator who translates a unique language, you can command a higher rate than someone who translates in Spanish, since Spanish is a more common language.

Another factor that determines translation rates is the type of material that you will be translating. Typically, more technical material will be able to command a higher translation rate. For example, if you are a medical translator, or an engineering translator who translates scientific or engineering technical papers, you will be able to charge more. On the other hand, documents that are more general in nature will usually only get the basic Spanish translation rate.

Another factor that sometimes plays a role in how much you can charge is the reputation you have as a translator, or how long you've been in the business. Competition is pretty tough these days, partly due to the fact that everyone that speaks more than one language thinks they can be a translator. Because of the competition, Spanish translation rates are often driven way down. However, paying the lowest cost doesn't mean the client will get a good translation, so by keeping your translation rates at a fair price for translators and clients, you'll be keeping the industry fair.

Once you understand the factors that go into setting Spanish translation rates, you can go ahead and set rates. One of things that can give you an idea of what kind of rates to set for your translation business is to check out freelance translation websites and see what kind of rates other translators set. One such site is Proz.com. One this site, clients can post their jobs and translators can bid on them. To get you started in setting your Spanish translation rates, I will say that I've seen rates anywhere from .15 to .70 cents a word, so taking the above factors into consideration, you should have enough to decide what rates to set.
