Whether you are just starting out with Couponing, or if you are a Seasoned Couponer, we all need to know the ethical and legitimate way of using coupons correctly. Here are some general coupon tips, rules, and coupon etiquette.

General Coupon Rules & Tips

Coupons may only be used once - You can't buy 2 items & use the same coupon two times!

You can not use 2 coupons for 1 item. You can however use 1 store coupon & 1 manufacturer coupon if the store allows it. We'll discuss this later on in the series.

Now let's use an example here...

Let's say that you are buying 4 boxes of General Mills Cereals. You have (4) different coupons in your coupon stash for GM cereals. Two coupons are for $1/1, One coupon is $1/3, and One coupon is for $1/2 GM cereals.

If you are buying four boxes, you can use (2) $1/1 Coupons, and the $1/2 Coupon, and that's all. If you use the $1/3 coupon, then you can also use just (1) $1/1 coupons. Only One coupon per item purchased!

Coupons can not be copied! It is Illegal to copy/photo copy coupons- even printable coupons! Don't do it!

Do not try to use a coupon for an item that you are NOT buying! And make sure to do as the coupon says. Basically, if a coupon is for $1 off 2, then you must buy 2 to use the coupon. If you do not follow the rules to a "T", then that is stealing!

You can use coupons on sale and clearance items too! If you have a coupon for an item that is on clearance or on sale, then you can still use a coupon for it, possibly making the item Free or Almost Free!

Number of items/coupons - Some stores will limit the amount of an item that you are purchasing, some do not. For example, if Ritz crackers are on sale for $1 ea., limit 4 per transaction, then you can only purchase four!

You Can Use Multiple Coupons On One Shopping Transaction - If you are purchasing four tubes of Crest Toothpaste, and four bottle of dawn dish soap and you have four Save $1/1 Crest Coupons, and four Save $1/1 Dawn soap coupons, then you can use all of them in one transaction. Please note though, to always read the fine print on coupons for limits, and know your store's coupon policy for any coupon limits. We'll talk about this more later.

If you have a manufacturer coupon for B1G1 Free, and the store has that item on sale for B1G1 free, then you'll get 2 Free! The store provides 1 free, and the Manufacturer provides one Free. Please note that this rule sometimes can vary by the store's coupon policy. But typically, this rule applies.

If you have a FREE product coupon & it is on sale for B1G1 free, then you'll get 2 Free! The same concept as above.

If you have a coupon for Save $1/2, then you can use it if the item is on sale for B1G1 free and you buy 2. Even though one of the products is Free, you are still purchasing two.

10 for $10 or 2/$5 ect. - When there is a sale for 10 for $10 you don't have to buy 10 of the same item! The items are just $1 ea. Same goes for 2/$5 -they are just $2.50 ea. You get the idea. But always read the fine print just in case!

Don't Rush To The Store With Your Coupon - If you have a coupon for $.25 off toilet paper, then save it for when the toilet paper goes on sale to get the most bang for your buck. Also, if you use the $.25 off coupon at a store that doubles your coupon, then you'll also save more money. By combining your coupons with sales, rebates, or other promotions, you will pay the best price for the item that you are purchasing.

Shelf Clearing Is Not Right - It's just not right to go to a store, purchase 20 of the same items and leave nothing for the others! Please be courteous of the amount you purchase at one time! Some stores will allow you to place a special order, if you need a lot of a certain item. This is something that you would have to discuss with the store manager.

Don't Be A Peelie Thief- A peelie coupon is a coupon that is attached to a product. It is a manufacturer coupon. It is intended to be used when you are buying that product. You can not, or should not take the peelie coupon off of the product if you are not buying that product. It just isn't right. If you buy the product, and don't use the coupon, then it is okay to peel it off at home to use it another time though.

Limit Yourself To The Amount Of Coupons that you take from a tear pad or blinkie machine. Typically I would say that it is okay to take more than one coupon. If their are a lot of coupons, then I'd limit myself to taking 3 or 4. If there are not a lot of coupons left, then only take 1 or 2.

Don't Steal Coupons, Coupon Inserts, or Newspapers! It is stealing, no matter what the value is, and it is illegal to steal. This includes only paying for one, and taking multiple newspapers at a self serve vending machine, taking only the inserts out a paper, and not buying the paper, cutting a coupon out of an insert or magazine, and not purchasing the paper or magazine, and driving by houses and taking their newspapers from their driveway without permission. All of these methods of getting coupons is stealing! Do not do it!

I know that some of these rules are common sense to most of you, but to a beginner couponer, and because of the misconceptions from the TV show, "Extreme Couponing", I thought that I should highlight these rules.

29 Days of Couponing Tips Day 9: Know Your Coupons { What Does The Fine Print Mean?}

Types Of Coupons:

There are two types of Coupons, Manufacturer Coupons and Store Coupons. To find out what kind of coupon it is, just look in the box next to the expiration date.

Expiration Date:

The coupon is valid only until the expiration date. For example, the coupon pictured here can only be used until February 28th 2011. You can not use a coupon past the expiration date. Make sure to always pay close attention to the expiration date on all of your coupons.

A Manufacturer coupon is a coupon that can be used at any store that accepts coupons, unless it states Only use at "__________ store." A manufacturer coupon is provided by the manufacturer of the product that the coupon is for. When you use a coupon, the manufacturer will reimburse the store for the face value of the coupon plus a certain amount of money. In the fine print on the coupon it usually states what the amount is, for example, if you used a coupon for $1 off Glade at Wal-mart, then Glade will reimburse Wal-mart for the amount you saved, $1 plus 8 cents. Wal-mart is not losing out on the amount, the Manufacturer is. Wal-mart is actually making 8 cents from you using that coupon.

If a Manufacturer Coupon says, Available at "Wal-mart" (or whichever store, Wal-mart is only an example) on it, you can still use it at any retailer that accepts coupons. It just means that Wal-mart paid the manufacturer to include that verbage on the coupon. However, if you use that coupon that says "available at Wal-mart" at Kroger, then the Manufacturer will still reimburse Kroger for the face value of the coupon. It is just a marketing ploy.

Value or Face Value: This tells you how much will be deducted from your purchase. If a coupon says $1 off Glade, then $1 will be deducted from your purchase.

A Store Coupon is a coupon that is provided by the store. You can only use a store coupon at that particular store. For example, the image above is a Target Coupon. You can only use a Target Coupon at Target. You can use a store coupon along with a manufacturer coupon to save more money (more on this later). Store coupons are funded by the particular store. Therefore, when you use a store coupon, the store takes the loss, not the manufacturer.

In the image above you can see a picture of an example of a basic coupon bar code. Most bar codes have five parts and a total of twelve digits.

Bar code: A Number System Character (NCS) of "5" identifies that a coupon is a coupon. "99" is another prefix. The "99" is used for non-doubling coupons.

If the first number of a coupon bar code starts with a "5" then it will automatically double (if the store doubles coupons) even if there are words that say, "Do Not Double." If the first number on a coupon bar code is a "9" or "99" then it will not double no matter what.

Wording: This is the most important part of a coupon. You Must read and pay close attention to the fine print and wording on a coupon! It is how you know what the coupon is for, and if there are any special rules for the coupon. If a coupon says, Save $.55 cents of any, then it truly can be used on any, not just what is pictured!

Picture: The picture on the coupon can be useful if you have never heard of the product, and it will help you to locate it on the shelf. The picture is a great form of advertising for the manufacturer. However, the picture is NOT important at all! The manufacturer will typically add a picture of their newest or most expensive product. As long as you follow the wording on a coupon, you can usually get the lowest priced product which most often is a better deal. If a coupon says, save $.55 off any, and does not state any restrictions such as no trial size, then you can use the coupon on the trial size version and most likely get it Free.

Fine Print: The fine print is usually the information for the retailers including the coupon redemption address. There usually is one or two lines intended for the consumer though. Limit one coupon per purchase? Coupons usually have some version of that statement, and I would like to explain these to you.

Limit One Coupon Per Purchase : This means one coupon per item that you purchase. If you buy 10 bottles of shampoo & have 10 coupons for them it's okay! Not one coupon per transaction. Unless stated on the coupon. Basically, each qualifying item is a purchase. If the coupon is for $1 off 2 boxes of cereal, and you buy 2 boxes of cereal, then that is a purchase. If you buy 4 boxes of cereal, than you can use (2) $1/2 coupons.

One Coupon Per transaction :This means that if you have a coupon for $1/1 Coke 12 pack, then you can only use one of those coupons per transaction. You can still use coupons for other products that you have purchased. If you have two of the $1/1 Coke 12 pack coupons, then you can use it on your next shopping trip, or you can do another transaction.

One Coupon Per Day/Visit: You can only use one of these coupons per store visit or shopping trip.

One Coupon per Person, Family, Household, Customer: This means you can only use 1 of these coupons.

How to Quickly and Easily Clip Your Coupons!

Today we are talking about how to quickly and easily clip your coupons, when you have multiple coupon inserts, and I made a video showing you how I do it! ( If you can't see the video, click here)

Some Tips For Clipping coupons:

*Try to pick the same day every week to clip your coupons. I usually try to clip my coupons as early in the week as possible, typically on Sunday or Monday. I usually try to clip my coupons in the evening after the kids go to bed, while I’m watching TV. This way it does not seem as tedious.

*Either clip out every single coupon, or save your inserts by a "File By Date" Coupon Organization method. Only discard the coupons of items that you would not buy even if they were Free. But, before you throw out those coupons, ask yourself, "If this item were Free, could I donate it to someone?"

Why do we keep all of our coupons?

Well, you never know if a particular item will be Free after coupon and sale, even if it an item that you would not regularly buy. If you throw away your coupons, you might wish later on down the road that you had the coupon. It is always safest to keep all of your coupons!

How do you Clip, and Organize Your Coupons?

I always flip through all of the coupon inserts, and only cut out the coupons that I think that are the Best coupons, the coupons I am most likely to use. The coupons that I cut out of coupon inserts, magazine's, coupon that I print (ect) are filed into my coupon binder. Then I keep all of the rest of the coupons in my Coupon File by Date Method, that I referred to Here.

29 Days of Couponing Tips: How To Organize Your Coupons!

Every day for the month of February, I am sharing tips with you to help you to get started with couponing! So far we have talked about....

So, we have talked about a lot of ways to get coupons - now we need to talk about how to organize all of them!

Keeping your Coupons Organized is Very Important! Without Organization, finding the coupon you need, when you need it becomes a chore. Then you will find yourself saying, " I don't have time to find that coupon, forget it - I'm just going shopping!" There are so many different methods of organizing your coupons, and once you figure out which system works best for you, you will stop leaving the savings at home!

There are two different ways to organize coupons that I wanted to discuss. But, keep in mind that there are several different ways to organize!

I made a video explaining this....

(1) Whole Insert Filing: Uncut coupon inserts are filed, by date, in a filing system. All sources from the same date are filed together. Coupons are clipped only as needed. Variation: Inserts are divided both by date and source, such as filing Smart Source and Red Plum inserts separately. Another variation: Collated Insert Filing: Uncut coupon inserts are collated together by identical pages, then filed in a filing system. To further organize, they can also be divided by source. Coupons are clipped only as needed.

(2) Coupon Binder Method: The Coupon Binder is exactly what it sounds like.... binders with page protectors that store all of your coupons in one place. I made a video back in 2008 describing my coupon binder if you'd like to check that out Here.

Personally, I now utilize both systems. First, I grab the coupon inserts out of the Sunday newspaper. Then I go through and cut out all of the coupons that I think that I will use, or the coupons that look the "Best" to me. Then I will file them into my coupon binder. The rest of the insert, I file into my Whole insert filing system. When I am preparing to go to the store, if the coupon that I need is not in my coupon binder, then I simply look for it in my whole insert filing system. I only use the small organizer with my prepared shopping list and coupons ready for the trip. I still bring my coupon binder with me to, just in case if I see an unadvertised deal.

- Food Storage and Trash Bags

- Paper Products (ex: toilet paper, paper towels)

29 Days Of Couponing Tips : More Ways to Find Coupons!

So far, we have talked about Coupon Inserts, Printable Coupons, eCoupons, and Coupon Clipping Service's. Would you believe that there are still more ways to get coupons! Therefore, today we'll talk about more ways to find coupons!

:: Facebook

Facebook is a good resource to find coupons. Make sure to "Like" all of your favorite brands or products, so that you will know if they release a coupon. Of course, I also always try to share with you on this blog when I find a good coupon!

:: Manufacturer's Websites

Go directly to the manufacturer's website to look for any available coupons. I would also recommend signing up for their newsletter, because sometimes they will email exclusive coupons to their newsletter subscribers. Make sure to set up a separate email address, so that you don't get too much clutter in your personal email account inbox.

:: Email Your Favorite Companies

A great resource for getting coupons, is by emailing the company directly. Tell them that you love their product, and they might just send some coupons your way! Couponing to Disney shows you exactly how to do this!

:: Blinkies, Tear Pads, and Peelie Coupons

Whenever you are shopping, pay very careful attention, and you'll be surprised by the amount of coupons that you can find while shopping. If it is good coupon, you can always save it for when a good sale comes along.

*Blinkie coupon - a coupon in a machine (usually red in my region) distributed by Smart Source. The nickname "Blinkie" refers to the light that blinks to get your attention. Even though most of the blinkie's in my region don't even blink. LOL. These are usually located right in front of the product on a shelf. They also typically have a slot on the top for customers to replace the coupons if they are not interested.

*Tearpads Coupons- are coupons located on a tearpad, that looks similar to a notepad. They are often displayed on a shelf or product display, especially on cardboard in-aisle displays. Customers can easily tear the coupon off of the tearpad and use it any time before it expires. Most of these manufacturer coupons can generally be redeemed at any store that accepts manufacturer coupons unless it is stated on the coupon.

*Peelie coupons- These coupons are located on a sticker directly on the product. You can easily peel these coupons off of the product & use it if you are purchasing the product.

:: Magazine's

All You Magazine is my favorite magazine resource for getting coupons. You can only get All You magazine from a subscription or by purchasing it from Wal-mart. In my opinion, it is a much better deal to subscribe.

If you read my blog regularly, you will also notice that if I find a Free magazine subscription, or one that it a very good price, than I will share it with you.

I always flip through my magazine's to look for coupons first thing when it comes in the mail. There are a lot of coupons in magazine's!

:: Look inside product packages

Always look inside packages before you throw them out, because sometimes you might spot a coupon!

:: Use a Coupon Database

Whenever I am looking for a particular coupon, I always head over to the WUC Coupon Database.

:: Catalina Coupons and receipts

Catalina (aka Cat) coupons or Custom Coupons are paper coupons that print out from a separate machine usually at the grocery store. Typically, these coupons are triggered by something that you purchased. In the past, you may have just thrown these away, but it seems that as of lately these coupons are sometimes good high value coupons, and sometimes coupons for a Free product. Always, keep the Catalina coupons that you think you might use, just in case if a good sale comes along.

At some stores they also print coupons on the bottom of your receipt or even on the back of your receipt, so make sure to always check.

:: Store Coupons

Some stores offer "Store" coupons that are only valid at their store. Some stores have store coupons that they will mail you, that you can print directly from their website, and sometimes some stores put store coupons in their sales ad.

:: Friends & Family

Ask your friends or family to give you the coupons that they do not want. In most cases, they will be more than happy to do this.

Sunday Coupon Insert Preview - Feb. 5th!

It's time to look at what coupon's to expect in tomorrow's Sunday Newspaper! Tomorrow's newspaper should have up to (3) Coupon Inserts! You should see (1) Smart Source Coupon Insert, (1) Red Plum Coupon Insert and (1) General Mills insert.

Before you decide how many papers to buy, make sure to Get a Sneak Peak and Check out the Sunday Coupon Preview for the full list of all of the expected coupons! Remember to always buy your papers in pairs so that you have 2 coupons for the Buy 1 Get 1 Free items. Also keep in mind that coupons do vary by region, so make sure to flip through your papers to make sure that you are getting the high value coupons, or amount of inserts that you are expecting, before buying a lot of papers, and pick up the largest paper(largest city newspaper) in your area to get the best coupons!

Today, we are talking about Coupon Clipping Services!

Some of you might be wondering what a coupon clipping service is? Basically, it is a service that scouts out coupons, clips them, and then mails them to you for a small fee. You are not actually buying the coupon, but paying for the time involved in the sorting, clipping, filing, and mailing of the coupons.

How much does it costs?

The prices vary by site, but typically costs anywhere from 5 cents to a dollar. The price depends on many factors including the type, amount, demand, and availability. Some sites also charge a shipping fee, and some have minimum order requirements.

Will It Save Me Money? Why Should I Spend money to Save money?

Coupons are worth a lot of money. If you have a $1 coupon, it is equal to $1 in cash! (I Love coupons, if you didn't know that yet! LOL) Coupons will save you a lot of money! Whether you are an "Extreme Couponer" or not, then coupon clipping services are for you!

If you would like to be a more strategic shopper but you don't have the time to purchase multiple newspapers & organize them all, then Coupon Clipping services will work for you, all you do is find the coupons you need, pay a small fee & within a few days you'll have the coupons to get in on all the great deals! Those coupons will save you a ton of money!

Maybe you already buy a bunch of newspaper inserts and you're already an "Extreme Couponer." You can use a coupon clipping service to stock up on your favorite coupons, and to get more coupons for a great Stockpiling sale.

Another reason to use a coupon clipping service:

Coupons vary by region. Maybe you got a coupon for $1/2, and in another region they received the same coupon for $.50 off, which will double at some stores, making it a better coupon. Shopping around at the Coupon Clipping services will help to maximize your savings even more!

Whatever your situation, Coupon clipping services are a great way to accumulate coupons and Trust me, It pays to use a coupon clipping service!

29 Days of Couponing Tips: eCoupons 101

Welcome to Day 3 of my 29 Days of Couponing Tips series! Today, we are going to talk about eCoupons! Specifically, What are they, How do you use them, Where do you find them and I'll share some Pros and Cons of using eCoupons!

What are eCoupons?

eCoupons, also known as Electronic Coupons or Digital coupons, are paperless manufacturer or store coupons that  you can upload from your computer at home, directly on to your store's Shopper's or Loyalty Card. In my own experience, these eCoupons are Primarily available for your Kroger Plus card. The store's that use eCoupons will vary according to the region you live in.

How do you use eCoupons?

eCoupons are very easy to use! All that you have to do is register or sign up at the eCoupon sites (listed below) and add your shopper's card numbers to your account. Then you will review the list of coupons that they have available. You can then choose which coupons you want to use and add them (or load them) to your shopper's card. When you go shopping and purchase the product that you "loaded" a coupon for, the amount of the coupon will automatically come off at the register when you check out. Pretty easy, huh!

Where can I find an eCoupon?

The first place to look for eCoupons is at your store's website (i.e. Kroger). Grocery store chains are good about sharing ways to help you to save money if you shop at their store. They will usually include links to the eCoupon sites that they are using.

Here is a list of eCoupon services that I am currently aware of and that I have used:

Cellfire -   Offers grocery eCoupons for Kroger and Kroger affiliated stores. These coupons are updated bi-weekly. PLUS, they offer savings on shopping, entertainment, and restaurants via mobile web. But, the Grocery eCoupons have Nothing at all to do with your mobile phone.

Shortcuts - Offers eCoupons for Kroger family of stores.

Kroger eCoupons - Offers eCoupons for Kroger stores.

P&G eSavers - Offers eCoupons for Proctor & Gamble products at Kroger. These coupons are updated monthly.

Meijer mPerks - These digital coupons can only be used at Meijer stores. For more info about mPerks and how to use them check out my post Here.

:: The following sites work a little different ::

Upromise - offers eCoupons at a variety of stores: CVS, Kroger, and Meijer (this varies based on where you live). The main difference between Upromise and other eCoupon services is that the product savings is deposited into your Upromise college savings account versus coming off of your total at check out. In addition, unlike most other eCoupons, Upromise coupons can be used in conjunction with manufacturer's coupons! Upromise eCoupons are updated monthly and you can find instructions for using them in my post here.

Saving Star -  This is the company that manages the Upromise eCoupon system so these eCoupons work very similar to Upromise. Except, Once your account reaches a minimum of $5, you can get your money back in Pay pal, Amazon gift cards or other options. You can also combine these eCoupons with paper manufacturer coupons. You can find instructions for using them in my post here.

Campbell's eLabels - These are valid at 4,000 stores including Kroger family of stores. This program allows you to earn money for a participating school, when a participating product is purchased. You can find out more about these in my post here.

Tip for using eCoupons - Combine an eCoupon with an item that is on sale, to save more money!

:: Pros

No clipping or lugging around coupons to the store. Plus, you don't have to worry about losing coupons, since they are loaded to your shopper's card. Once you set up services, it is quick and easy to use.
You can easily print a shopping list from most eCoupon sites, so that you can remember which eCoupons that you loaded to your shopper's cards.
You can even get eCoupons for store brand products. (Kroger in particular, or Meijer products from mPerks)
If you have problems with your eCoupons not coming off, contact the eCoupon site directly, and they are more than willing to help!

:: Cons

There is usually a limit of 50-150 coupons per eCoupon site, that can be loaded to your card.
You have to be very careful to purchase the exact item (size, brand, ect) specified on the coupon, in order for it to work. For example, if the eCoupon says for 4 oz. Crest toothpaste, then you can not purchase the 6 oz. size if you want the eCoupon to work.
If you have added an eCoupon for the same product using two different services, there is no way to control which eCoupon is redeemed first. For example, if I add a $1/1 coupon for Cheerios on to my Kroger Plus card using Cellfire and a $.50/1 Cheerios coupon on to my Kroger Plus card using Shortcuts, I can not choose which coupon is redeemed first.
Once you add an eCoupon to your shopper's card, there is no way to remove it, unless you redeem it.
eCoupons can only be redeemed as face value, i.e., the eCoupon will not double or triple.
eCoupons are only available for a one time download. You can only download and use it one time.
You can not use an eCoupon and a paper coupon together (stacking) at Kroger. With the exception of Saving Star and Upromise.
