I just got done reading an article by web writing genius, Dr. Patsi Krakoff. Her last two posts have been about neuromarketing. In this post she wrote something that I couldn't get out of my head.

"When something catches our attention, if we want to know more, and if it triggers one of our drives (acquire it, eat it, bond with it, use it to save time, energy or money or protect family) we will remember it so that we can take action on it." You can read her whole article here.

Web writing is nothing more than trying to trap a reader's attention in some emotional way. If it is helpful, time or money saving, or protection related, our minds will want to latch on to it. We are a very self-centered animal amidst a very greedy culture. What does it do for me?

This is the reason that "time saving" and "money making" blogs, sites and content are so popular on the web today. We take an already convenient and superfast platform for information, such as the internet, and we search for products, advice and services that will make our life even more convenient.

So, the next time you're thinking about your next article for HubPages or InfoBarrel keep the following questions in mind for the best chance of interaction and getting the reader to do something with your content.

What do you know best? Can your web writing turn out a "How-To" article about it? Can that article be so tightly written and easy to understand that a person will be able to accomplish the task right then and there?

What most concerns you about the safety of your children or yourself? Web writing on those particular topics can be particularly effective. If you can convince the reader that they should follow your advice, or safety tips, then the message will be branded somewhere deep in the consciousness, almost feeling guilty if they don't follow it. Loved ones are a great motivator.

A recipe? Web writing about food, and especially recipes, are terribly action causing. Doesn't it feel like you always spend more in a grocery store when you're hungry? Now, imagine making someone's mouth water as they're searching for a pot roast recipe. If they liked it…they'll come back. Why? Because you have just satisfied one of the most primal, powerful and original human physiological warnings-hunger.

Web Writing can be a very powerful tool. That's why companies pay millions of dollars annually for good web writing and content. The ability to imprint themselves on the psyche of their customers can mean a lifelong commitment to their brand or service. Does your web writing do that?

Continuing on the theme of where web writers can earn money residually let’s talk a little bit today about InfoBarrel. I haven’t written for InfoBarrel much but I am in the middle of writing a series of web friendly articles to place on the site. So, let’s get down to business!

Web Writing For Money With HubPages

I'll admit it. Writing on the web for money by placing articles on HubPages took a while to grow on me. I didn't like the idea of giving my web writing to someone else to "share" the money with. Besides that, when I first started blogging or web writing for residual earnings I was impatient. I put a few articles in different places and then, when I didn't earn much (zero, actually!) I got disgruntled.

Keys To Web Writing For Money With HubPages

This is gonna' be quick and dirty because I truly feel that no matter how many tutorials or "how-to" articles you read, you just need to do it and learn. There are, however, some keys (not secrets!) to make your money making writing more successful.

You need to write alot: No matter how much research you do or how "hot" your topic is the traffic and interest will die down eventually. When your 40 to 50 views on one article per day die down to 2 or 3 then what happens? Well, you need to have about 15-20 articles getting a few impressions and reads per day.
Do Some Keyword Research: I don't condone writing solely for search engines as you have already found out if you have been reading my posts for more than a day or two. You do need to do some research though. If you have a writing topic idea then go to Google Adwords and type in a couple different versions of the keywords you want to write about and see which has the most traffic. For truly optimal results, use several different versions of that keyword or phrase various times throughout the article....but do it naturally!
Backlinking: Right now Google and other search engines give a lot of credit to what I like to call "peer recommendations". When people read your article and share it on social networks, +1 it, or link it on their own sites then the search engines see it as "more valuable". It makes sense. If it is quality writing with great worth then more people will want to spread it around. The problem is that many people don't get that kind of recognition for their writing-even with a high page-ranking site like HubPages. Web Writing Equals Good Writing Plus SEO

Image via WikipediaWe do a lot of talking here and everywhere else about writing for the web and the importance of SEO implemented into your writing. But, my friends, let me ask you this: Are you writing for SEO (search engine optimization) and SERPs (search engine results pages) so much that your writing isn't YOUR writing anymore? Does each and every sentence now owe it's structure to Google?

Even Flow Versus SEO

Yup, that's my new mantra! And, it's cool because it rhymes. I ask myself that question each and every time I hit the "publish" button now. (Or, before I hit the "publish" button. Besides, we don't really "hit" buttons do we? It's more of a finger tap, if anything.)

Let's just put it out there, okay?

SEO gets you noticed by the Search Engine and Virtual "Robots" that scan web pages.

Good writing that flows naturally gets you noticed, read and returned to by readers who actually like what you have to say.

So, which one are you more concerned with? Well, that's a sticky conversation, and I'm apt to say the second, the "good writing" piece. However, if you want to actually allow people an easier way to actually visit your pages, blogs, articles, etc., then you're going to have to be found by the search engines.

This is why SEO is so important in Web Writing For Money. I can't think of a situation with web writing that will result in you making MORE money with less readers or visitors. If you get paid on a CPM (views per thousand) base then you need visitors. If you get paid by people actually coming to your site and clicking on ads then you need a lot of readers and visitors. If you're trying to promote a service or product in your writing then you need conversion.

After being in marketing and sales (and the hardest sales market in the world, in my opinion. Army recruiting in a time of sustained combat? Yeah, it takes skill!) I have learned that to get conversion you need two things above all else:

1. A great message.
2. A deep well of leads.

Every time a person has the opportunity to see your writing on the web through good SEO practices and being found with a quick search, then you should consider that a lead. Your message is what is in the content of your web writing. Does it contain a "call to action" or in any way try to get the reader to do what you want them to do? Does it get the message that you wanted to convey to the reader?

Of course, we have to be careful with this, too. You can't "tell" or "ask" readers to click on ads or you will be banished to the depths Hades itself by the "Big G". However, with good WEB WRITING which is comprised of smart SEO and good writing then you'll attain a following. You'll be easily found by search engines and people will actually want to read and visit your articles, pages, site, blogs, etc. Then you'll find that some are just a wee-bit curious about that text or image ad in the upper left hand corner (remember our discussion on ad placement?)of your page (right below the header and left or center of the content) and a few will click through to the advertisers site. See? Everyone's happy now. You have great web writing skills and actually do something that you love and make a little money from it. Google is happy because they are appeasing another advertiser and people keep using their search engine and ad program. And the advertiser is happy because they know that a deep well of leads is important.

It's an amazing cycle that leaves a lot of people happy and it all starts with your good web writing. Doesn't that make you feel good?

Earn Money Online Web Writing

Making money online with good web writing is a very good possibility. There are just too many ways these days to take your online writing and make some money from it. Web content writers are in high demand and as more and more non-writers start trying to make money with blogs and websites they'll become even more sought after.

I came up with a list that you may want to keep in mind if you're just stating your online writing venture. To earn money online is more of a puzzle than anything else. The good news is that all the pieces to that puzzle are either supplied to you online or within yourself-you just gotta' piece them together. Ready? Let's start making money online!

Content Rules With Web Writing

Web writers who already earn money online will tell you, in most cases, that content rules. I agree with this to a point. However, you will find plenty of blogs and other online articles that really suck that are making money. Why? Well, that's factor number two.

Remember, your content is you on the web. What I mean by that is everyone is different; we speak, write, act, think, and see things differently. Unless you're a technical writer then your web writing should have some tone or voice that directly reflects you onto the page or screen. Sure, your content needs to be spot on, but what's to say that you can't joke and be different in your web writing? The best way to make money online is to stand out and keep people coming back. Be creative and incorporate SEO (search engine optimization) in all of your web writing.

Power of the Web On Your Writing And Earnings

No matter how tight your web writing skills are, you'll never make money online if no one knows about it or can find it. So, the online writing platform that you're using is very important. This is the reason why most veteran or successful web writers will urge newbies to start writing for sites that already have page rank.

Places like HubPages, Squidoo, Suite 101, InfoBarrel, and Y!CN and Triond are popular because they already have high page-rank, a large reading audience and easy ways to monetize. Suite 101 even has an editorial feedback system that will help you polish your web writing skill and lead to you making more money online. The problem with those sites is that in exchange for their page-rank and platforms they share the money that your article makes with you.

What's the alternative? Start your own blog on your own domain. This is very much worth it but just be prepared-it takes a while to actually gain a readership and earn decent money. Many bloggers who eventually make started by both writing for their own blogs and the above mentioned sites to assure some money was being earned.

Other bloggers are dirty. They have substandard content placed on crappy sites that they own and have managed to get them to rank high in search engines results by building backlinks with automated software. Poop!

Diversify Your Web Writing Venues

You'll find hundreds of online web writers who swear by a certain site. Some love Suite 101 and hate Hubpages. Others write only for their own blogs and will never touch those places. My best advice is to have as many writing sites available to you as possible. When Google throws another algorithm update then some places may not survive it.

Online writing can be a fickle, nasty beast. One day you're loving life and the next you're sucking wind. Just ask all those ex-eHow writers that had the rug pulled out from under them! Online writing is fun, can be lucrative but you need to ensure that you have many baskets for all of your eggs. To really ensure you earn money online you need have lots of articles in lots of different places.

Search Engine Optimzation

Aah, the dreaded SEO. Let's be honest though, when web writing you need to have a basic understanding of it. There are tools out there that can help. Read my articles on InboundWriter and Scribe to get an idea. Besides that, building backlinks (naturally!) will help get your web writing noticed and ranking higher in the search engines. And believe you'll notice the difference! Having an article or blog post ranked in the top 3 of Goolge search will almost guarantee that you earn money online.

Commenting in blogs and forums with links to your articles, blog posts, or the profile page of the writing site are two great ways to start building backlinks. Then there are other ways like social bookmarking on Digg and StumbleUpon. Having a featured link on those two sites will help you earn money online as well.

The Love Apple you'll just love!

I've never liked tomatoes, it's the squidgy squashy centre that's worse than a coffee cream!

Yes they are healthy, full of vitamins and have cancer fighting properties. We know all that, but I still can't put a one in my mouth and chew! I empathise with anyone else who can't.

But as a wife and mother who likes my family to eat healthy I've come up with the tastiest unpulpiest recipe for the red fruit.

For this recipe choose the reddest of Cherry tomatoes, you need about 700g, put a layer of them in an oven dish and add 6 shallots, a couple of sprigs each of fresh rosemary and Thyme, 2 finely chopped cloves of garlic, a teaspoon of a good quality balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Roast in the oven for an hour, occasionally stirring, the oven wants to be at a medium to high heat. The magic then begins!

Firstly, the aroma that fills your kitchen will have you salivating and you'll be praying for visitors so they'll be inquisitive, envious and impressed with the rich scent wafting up their noses, hoping for an invite to stay and eat with you!

After the very long hour is up, serve your tomato dish with pork (the meat isn't really required but it makes it more of a substantial meal) and warm crusty bread. The bread is a must to mop up all the tasty juices! You'll notice that most of the pulp has virtually disappeared.

Next summer you'll be growing your own cherry variety and the following year you'll also be growing your own herbs! I know this because, not only did I do it but many of my friends were also converted!

There we have it, you're now a fully fledged grown up!

Web Write For A Tomato Contest

Image via WikipediaI hate tomatoes. Can't stand them. Never have been able to. I hate the squishy pulp. I can eat some tomatoes as long as their not, well, "pulpy". What does this have to do with web writing?

Well, I figure that if a person can write an article or blog post that makes me want to eat a tomato then they're a good web writer. It means they've painted a picture and involved a "call to action" that will make me want to at least try to get to like tomatoes.

So, I'm gonna' hold a contest for you web writers that (hopefully) read this blog. Here are the rules:

Is Your Web Writing Too Complicated For Readers?

A couple of months ago I came across this article on Perry Marshall's website and I am finally getting around to doing a post about it. I think it is definitely relative to what we talk about here on web writing tips for money.

Mr. Marshall claims that he owes his success in copy writing because at the level he writes at a level that doesn't require you to use any brain power. And believe me, Perry Marshall gets it done. In many circles he is considered the premiere authority for Google Adwords conversion. When advertisers want the attention of prospective clients and customers then they refer to Perry Marshall's expertise.

As a web writer your conversion is of utmost importance so don't you think you would do well to listen to a guru like Marshall when it comes to getting people to click, take action and do exactly what you want them to do with just a couple words? Uhm…YEAH.

According to that tool this text has a reading of a 8^th grader and a 13 year old kid. Pretty easy to digest, right?

So, does that make this better? I'm not sure. I mean, who am I to argue a master like Marshall but…

I think there's a danger in that though. How far away are we from web writers having a certain tone and language but then purposely "writing down" to their readers. Personally, I'd be pissed if I knew someone was writing down to me on one of my favorite blogs.

Sure, I understand that there is obvious dangers, too, in being too smart or technical in web writing, copy writing or any writing but shouldn't be decided by the reader?

On second thought: Is that already happening? Do people like Darren Rowse, Seth Godin and Brian Clark talk down to me? They're all very successful. Does that mean they "got me" by writing down to my level?

I don't think so. What do you think?

Web Writing Isn't Everything

Call me a fool but I choose to use my night, quiet time as my writing time. Sure, I'm at my best before 9 a.m. While I'm at my best in the mornings, my best web writing happens at night. Gimme' a couple cups of coffee and a cigarette and I'm ready to roll. Most of the good stuff happens then and I choose to use it for stuff other than writing.

Work out.

One of the thing that I think many web writers and bloggers forget about is their physical fitness. Well, I'd like to remind you all of two things. One, health and life insurance isn't cheap so it greatly benefits you to stay in goo shape. I mean, "not on the brink of death if you get up to get a cup of coffee" shape. And, secondly, we all want to make lots of money with our web writing but what good is it if we die when we're young. Work out!

Chores/Housework

I'm a geographical bachelor which, in the military, is a common term. What it basically means is this: I'm happily married with lots of kids but they don't live with me. I have to maintain my household, keep it in living conditions and ensure that I'm not getting over run with cockroaches. I do this in the mornings, too.

I Surf The Web

This may come as a surprise but web writers, especially those wanting to earn money, need to keep up with the latest trends, hot topics and styles. I do this in the mornings. I read blogs, read the news, research topics and check stats. I don't want to be bothered with this "crap" at night when I'm actually writing.

What Do You Make Per Word?

Image via Wikipedia I know. A lot of web writers don't want to say what they make per word. It's embarrassing. Well, no; I take that back. To web writers it isn't embarrassing because all of us have been in a spot where we are making peanuts. To others though...brrr.

People who can't write will cringe at the fact that you might make a penny or less per word. There's a simple reason for it. They don't like to write. To write 100 words for them is like pulling out finger nails and being water-boarded at the same time. To us, writers/web writers, words come quick and easy.

When I first started writing on the web for money I was doing ALL of my work for a place called LondonBrokers.net . I promise you. I'll probably never do that again. They were paying something likey $6.86 for a 500 word article plus 2 re-writes. 1500 words, 2 hours...for less than seven bucks. Frig' that...and frig' them.

So, did I work my way through the web writing ranks and now make a lot of money? Not exactly. Though, I make a little more than a penny or two per word now.

I joined Break Studios about 1 year ago and started writing some article or blog posts for Made Manual and Break which are their highly trafficked sites. I started out like everyone else. One article of 250-700 words made $8 and at the time it was a landfall.

I guess someone there liked me because they chose me for a program where the articles make $12 and have a lot better topics and titles to write.

And you know what? I haven't written much for them since.

Why? I don't know. I guess that was one of the reasons I decided to start my own blogs and do my own web writing for my own domains. My money is my money. My effort is my effort and it was a validation that I could do this; at least a little bit. It is at times like those that I constantly think about the 2004 Red Sox World Series win and their motto in the playoffs:

"Why Not US?" so...

About Page. Why should people hire you? What makes you better then the freelance web writer next door in the other blog? Better yet, why should a person or business use you as their writer instead of one of those content sites that you're trying to get rid of dependence on?
Testimonials. Ask your client for feedback and post it on a testimonial page or somewhere on your site. If you don't have private clients yet then use feedback from those content sites that you've been web writing for. Also, you can use designations and rewards. I used to use stuff like "Hot 500 Contributor For May 2011" from the Yahoo! Contributor Network. I also used an article that got 20k page views in one day as proof that I could write for interest.
Prices and Services. You want people to hire you so you need to let them know how much you work for. Don't go too high or you won't get hired, especially if you lack a moderate amount of experience or have only a few work samples.

WARNING: Do Not Work For Less Then 1 cent per word. DON"T DO IT! That's all I'm gonna' say about pricing...the rest is on you.

When it comes to services then you need to let people know what you do. Content? Blog posts? Press releases? Product descriptions? People are looking for all sorts of web content so the more that you make yourself available to do, the better.

WARNING: Don't claim that you can do something if you can't.

Writing Samples: You can always place a blurb somewhere on your site that lets prospective customers know that they can request writing samples. Never write a sample for FREE for a customer. They either want something or they don't. You can't get a Big Mac for free just to see if you like it and neither can your customers. They shouldn't expect it and if they're asking for it then they are taking advantage and the know it.
Blog: You can use your blog as a living writing sample. If permitted you can post links to your articles that are online. Try to find articles and then write a small tidbit about what makes it a good or bad article. You can blog just about anything as long as it's pertinent to your web writing ability.
Resume: I'm not real big on a resume that lists EVERY article that you've ever written or EVERY content web writing site that you've ever worked for. Your resume should include your contact information, education, certificates, pertinent job history (if you've spent 15 years as a mechanic at Roto-Rooter then I'm not that needs to be there unless you're a web content writer that specializes in mechanic content. Your resume is on you to figure out what are best practices.

If you don't have one of those things going on then I suggest that you start immediately. Why write only for other people? Write for yourself, too! Pick a topic that you love and get to writing and creating content for you.

Why Blog With Your Skills?

Because they are your skills. Your own site and your own money when it starts coming in!

Blogging For Dads is my main site. It is self-hosted and my first true endeavor into blogging for money. I got lucky with it but not for the reasons you may think. I don't get a lot of traffic yet or make tons of money from writing there but I love it. Much like this blog. I enjoy writing on both of them and whether I have a successful money day, week or month on either of them I can't stop writing for them. To me, that is true luck.

Recently though, I've seen some light at the end of the tunnel and I only write this post because if you're writing for money then you need to know that it can be successful with unique content, time, and my definition of "luck".

I have an email responder on Blogging For Dads that sends a person a free eBook when they subscribe and join my list. It has been active since July 17th of this year. In that time I got about 9 subscribers. In the last two days though, I've added 4. It surprised me. I like the service and it's only $19 a month!

The Reason For The Increase

Google made a "Panda" update to the way its search engine finds sites and I have started to hit higher and more often for a lot of my key words.
My content is starting to get close to the 100 post mark which is just about where I thought I would need to be for me to make a dent in the highly competitive, over saturated "blogging" and "make money blogging" niches
Most importantly: Ever piece of my content is original and I have not swayed from the many keywords I am shooting for in the rankings.

I'm not shaking my own hand here. This is simply a post to let all web writers out there that making money on the net is possible with time and by practicing all the correct web writing best practices.

You can do it...so get to it!

Don't Be A Web Writng Snob

There are a lot of web writers, content writers, freelance writers...whatever you want to call us, that don't really define themselves as "a writer". They're either wary of doing so because they lack confidence in their abilities, they lack confidence in the web's ability to sustain them enough to call it a job, or it's REALLY not their job.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Some people don't want to label their web writing as a job because it's more of a hobby for them and when they start calling it "work" it becomes work instead of just this fun thing. Now, there are people who will disparage the leisurely web writer. They'll say that "those people" are ruining the trade or profession.

I say bullshit. If you want to be considered any different in my book then any other writer then you have to show me some kind of formal training or degree. And I'm not talking about your Liberal Arts Degree. You need to show me a lot. If you want to walk around with your web writing nose stuck in the air then you have to show me how your different.

The truth is that 99% of all web writers are just dudes and dudettes that like writing and want to make money from it.

Just like any business there are differing levels of quality. Some stay in business because they are savvy and good at what they do. Others fail.

Every food joint that opens and closes because its crap doesn't make other establishments look bad. It makes them look better.

So, here's my two bits:

If you think you're an awesome web writer, then good for you. Congratulations. Don't tell me what is or isn't a good web writer, though. Just stay in your little bubble and be successful. You aren't the web writer/content writer police. Shut up.

If someone is trying to start an web writing career then HELP them. There's plenty of work out there. No one is trying to steal your prized client or your 2.7 cents a word at Textbroker.

Why Are PLR Articles So Popular Right Now?

It's just icky. That's the only way I can describe it. As long as you're getting paid and not being promised compensation with traffic or fame. What those clients do with the articles that we write is kind of out of our hands once we send it off to them.

Web Writers are in a tough spot, usually. Most of us don't have successful, high-ranking, heavily trafficked blogs so we are forced to write for people that either offer up-front money or those that already have the traffic in hopes of making a buck or two off of them.

Web Writing and Mass Articles

Most people who have, or offer, large amounts of PLR material have either paid a whole bunch of web writers to write them for them, or they somehow joined a mailing list that offered a whole bunch. Or, and this is the worse, they are using some kind of article spinner to write one or two articles and then "spinning" them into ten or hundreds of others. This isn't right, either. Kind of like Frankenstein. It works okay but it's mostly just a retarded shell that doesn't operate the right way.

But What is PLR?

PLR, or Private Label Rights articles, are just articles written by someone else that just about anyone can use, for just about anything they want. Web Writers Be Wary! There are different stipulations put on each set of articles by the original author, but those rules are hardly adhered to. Once they are out for the taking then they get raped like a poor girl being victimized by a Viking raiding party.

Some authors will say that you can use but not sell. You can sell but you can't re-write. You can use, sell, and re-write but you can't "re-PLR" them. Weird, the whole thing, right?

PLR Popularity

PLR articles and eBooks are popular for two reasons. Most of the people selling or using them can't or won't write. And, two, those same people are too cheap to pay a quality web writer some money to create a product of decent quality.

Image via WikipediaI just read an article titled "The Seven Qualities of Highly Successful Web Writing". If you go and take a gander at it then you'll notice the date of 12 December, 2000. That was a big "whoa" moment for me. I just automatically assumed that what was "good web writing" back then couldn't possibly still be relevant today. Right?

I mean, the web has changed so much in those 11 years that there is no way that web writing back then was doing the same stuff that it's doing today. Here's a list of the seven qualities that people of ClickZ wrote about back then:

Clarity
Relevance
Brevity
Scanability and Readability
Consistency
Freedom from errors
Good Integration with site design

Web Writing For Money Hasn't Changed That Much In A Decade

Web writers must still clear. The content must still be relevant and brief. No one likes to arrive to a site and start reading something that is confusing and 10k words longs. And relevancy? Shoot...if the content doesn't deliver in that respect then say "goodbye" to that reading eye...forever.

Web content must still be easily scannable. We've talked about that on this blog a lot. Consistency in the site, tone and language is big for me. That's one of the reasons why I'm still on the fence about guest blog posts. I'm just not sure if the message or tone will be what I want.

Free of errors, is big still, right? I mean see a mistake on a web page and you let it pass. See a second and you get annoyed. See at third and you scramble to navigate away. And making sure that the text works well with the site design is paramount. Having a skateboarding, x-game blog with the wrong language and too much text will probably turn people off too!

Web Writing Will Be Needed For A Long Time

Over at Blogging For Dads we try to ensure that we incorporate all those things. And here, too! I like the fact that the profession, art and science of web writing hasn't changed in a decade. That means it will be around for a while. The topics change, sure, but web writers are assured of a job well into the future. More so if you think about the millions of blogs, sites, fan-pages, and bad eBooks that are being produced every year.

Even as some corporations admit that they use computers to produce their web content the types of sites that continue to do well in search engine results pages are those that have good web writing by a real human being.

Web Writers: Write YOUR Blog Posts, Not Someone Else's

(That's where I am anyway!) Why should people toil for hours and put crack their brains doing keyword research for someone else's hosted or self-hosted domain blog? It just doesn't make sense that web writers make other people lots of money while they make themselves the minimum money.

Now, it is true that many people just hate writing or can't write. I got that. Point, registered. But...dang! If you can write for the web. Like Writing for the Web. Why wouldn't you do it for yourself?

Register A Domain!

Free domain (like here on Blogger) or a self-hosted one of the many that offer it and CREATE! Pick a niche you love. Pick a topic you hate and tell us why! I don't care. Just do something. Then take that site and monetize the heck out of it. Put Adsense or Chitika. Place banner ads. Build readership and sell spots! I DON"T CARE!

Just don't do it for someone else!

Residual Income Is the Web Writer's Dream!

Write a blog post for someone else and say that pay you 2 cents per word. They want a 400 word blog post. You make $8! Yay! NO!

On your own blog or site that same post could be making $8 per month! Per week! Per day, even! What the heck? Yeah...and it keeps earning as long as people want that information, search for it and find your site. Then they follow, subscribe, click, and...well, all sorts of good things start happening.

Start a Web Writing Business For Money Through Blogging! I'm not asking anymore...I'm telling you! (With humility and your best interests in mind!)

About a week ago I wrote an article about how to optimize your web writing for the reader and not yourself. Realizing that you are writing for the pure experience of a stranger can be overwhelming and intimidating.

What do you write?

How do you write it?

Should you have voice?

Should it be a technical "how to"?

Okay, those are all important questions. But what if you knew exactly where the human eye falls when it reads web text? That would make it easier, right? Why? Well you would know where exactly a reader is more likely to look first and if you know the market and audience you're writing for then you have a chance to lock in their attention (steal it!) right away. Then….BANG!

So What Do We Know About Web Writing Already?

1. Readers arrive looking for information or entertainment.

2. 95% of the time they'll never read an article from beginning to end.

3. They scan the web writing for the information or words they're looking for.

To accomplish the "theft of attention" you do the following:

1. Make sure that you have a catch phrase with your key word up-front. Maybe you ask a question.

2. As web writers we don' do "fluff" so in an attempt to ensure all information is pertinent and attention getting we never write anything for the web that the article doesn't need. We get to the point and use engaging text.

3. We use bold words, bold subheadings, and the correct keywords throughout (but not stuffed) into the text so that the reader can easily find the information and stay engaged.

Below is a "heat map" from the Yahoo! Style Guide and the text that precedes it:

"When people do decide to read a page, their eyes sweep horizontally from left to right, often focusing on a roughly triangular area in the upper-left corner of a webpage, or the upper-left corner of the webpage’s main block of content. But this pattern varies depending on a page’s layout and purpose. For example, a person’s eyes will move differently over a photo-heavy slideshow, a text-heavy blog, or a page with a two- or three-column layout."

As you can see when the person first lands on the page they are concentrating on the upper-left hand corner of the main content on that page. This is the reason why so many people (and rightly so) do two important things with that area: They put the keyword in the title and first sentence of their web writing and they put in an advertisement around it.

Notice this page's upper-left hand corner. There's a large area for both subscription and a Google Adsense unit...a big one! Just to the right is my title (keyword included) then my main text (first sentence keyword included). I then go through my text and I use bold subheadings and other bold words that I think the reader may find interest in.

Web writing for money is a tricky thing. I always try to offer quality articles, posts, and text throughout the page. (I particularly like the "word of the week") BUT...if a person does not find what he or she wants on this page then they can always click out by way of an advert or a link to one of my other posts.

Web Writing Topics Can Be A Drag Somtimes

Image via WikipediaIf you've started writing for the web already and you're looking to make some money doing it then no doubt you have been to one of those sites that pay decent and always have work. Dream come true, right? Eh...

Are you having issues with there being plenty of work about everything you have no idea about? I've had issues with that in the past. I'll back and forth through the job boards and say to myself (in a whining inner whimper) "but I don't know about any of that stuff." Plus, many of them are B-O-R-I-N-G

Recently I learned a lesson due to my own stupidity and impatience that will benefit me in the long run. I thought I'd share it with you.

Lesson 1: If You Don't Know The Web Writing Topic Just Do Some Research

I started a blog about "what girls want". I have 2 teenage daughters, an adult daughter, a wife, a bunch of female friends...hell, I've even got a female parrot!

I wrote 2 posts and I was like "uhm, yeah...now what." I was stumped. I didn't know what to write about next. I was in that rut where I couldn't think of another thing that a girl might want.

How did I fix this? I did research online. I searched, read and studied other blogs of the same niche and got some pretty good ideas. And this led to me to my next problem...

Lesson 2: Consult An Expert

In this case it was easy. I went to my 17 yearn old, junior in high school daughter and started paying her for blog posts. She's brilliant. Besides her being part of my target audience age group, she's also the subject of my blog-a girl.

Both of these lessons learned can be applied to any kind of web writing. Don't just skid over a job labeled "400 words on the cut-o-matic 3xyz2D" because it just might be a damned blender. You can do that! And if you really don't know the stuff then go and do some research on it. Or, ask a spouse, a friend, or daughter/son that might have some expertise on the subject.

So, BANGO! You hit e'm with another separation...

Links, Links, Links

Links make the content interactive. If you mention a keyword in your text that may answer another of your readers questions (providing it's relevant) then link for them. They get "click" and web readers love to click.

These were just a quick into some of Web Writing's Best Practices but they were one my mind so I figured I'd get them off my chest!

Here are 10 Keys to Good Web Writing.

Write Relevant

Writing about your pet bird must be great but if he or she or it doesn't have anything to do with your topic or page then stay away from it. Hell, start another page or article if you have to. Just make sure that you aren't putting personal need and interest before what will appeal to everyone.

Write the End At The Beginning

Get to the point. Put your main focus at the beginning then explain it. Don't trust people to have the patience to read the whole article for an answer. Remember: People don't read web writing they scan it. They're looking for the answer to their question.

One Paragraph Should Equal One Idea

Each paragraph should address the answer the person's query that brought them there in the first place, or at least part of the answer to their question. Again, don't count on people sticking around too long if they can't find what they're looking for quick.

Use Lists For Your Web Writing

Look at this article your reading. Easy to read and scan. One point per bullet. Right? Bulleted lists are a practice to follow!

Keep Listed Items 10 words per

Most studies will tell you that people can only effectively remember about 8-10 things at a time. If your lists are too long then the reader will leave and not remember what you said soon after. Then they'll feel ripped off and won't wanna' come back. Those "101 Things To Clean In The Shower" are cool...but long. I guess that's why there's a bookmark function...but...uhm...keep it short.

Keep Sentences Short

Short sentences with only the words you need in them. See that?

Bold, Internal Subheadings Help With Scanning

Bold subheadings help people scan content faster. That makes for a more convenient experience and will make people wanna' return. Blogging For Dads does this really well!

Include Links IN the Content

Links standout and become part of the scanning process. People like that. It's a trail to follow with additional information at the end. It makes simple content feel "full".

Proof Read Your Stuff

I often make mistakes in my web writing and then BOOM! it's off to the presses without me proofreading. Why? I'm impatient. I have to force myself to look at my content a couple of times before I hit publish...which I'm about to do!

Good Web Writing can make a blog, site, article or product description seem like a flowing pleasure to partake in. Bad Web Writing can make a person feel like...well, clicking that "back" button.

Making money writing articles online can be pretty easy for anyone. If you are a good writer, fast typist and great reader, then you can learn everything you need to know right from the Internet without any previous formal training needed. This is probably the best fact about niche website Internet marketing.

If you are new to the business, your best bet is to ease into it. Writing can be a fickle beast and if you jump full bore into it then you could quickly find "freelance writing burnout" as your ultimate demise. I know it doesn't seem like it right now but it happens to all of use at some point or another. Take your time. You have a better chance of losing your motivation and having nothing to show for your efforts if you don't ease into it. • Start writing. This is often the last thing a person does when it should be a continuous thing. Even if there's no work, just start writing articles about things you're interested in. Either post them on content sites like Associated Content, Suite 101, Infobarrel or Hubpages, or stockpile them for a future blog or the possible matching writing assignment.

• At the beginning, when you're writing for pennies, volume will be key but never wane on your quality.

Image via WikipediaWeb writing isn't just a hobby. I can't stand it when I see that written somewhere on the web. You should have pride in everything you do. I sometimes have to pull my emotions in, keep them in check when I see things on blogs.

"Sometimes you have to blogs to keeps the contents freshly on your site." I read that today somewhere and, yeah, it pissed me off. I run another blog for work at home dads over bloggingdudes.com and I know I make grammatical errors in there. I might make some here, right now. The difference is this: I make web writing mistakes because I have ADD. I'm impatient. When I see blogs that should obviously be written in another language then I get aggravatded.

So, what is the point of this post? Why am I writing on web writing and venting about web writing? Because. Because, I want you to take pride in the writing that you do. When you write a piece for $2.00 or $32.00 I want you to take pride in what you're doing. That little piece of text could possibly be seen and read by millions of people. Whether those people see it right away or over a period of time, a lot of people are going to see your writing (maybe not a million, but a lot). You owe it to everyone else who writes for the web to do your best at all times.
