Words are powerful. The right words can paint a picture, evoke an emotion, or even […]

Words are powerful. The right words can paint a picture, evoke an emotion, or even change someone’s mind about something. Using the “wrong” words can turn off your audience or even make them question your credibility. As content creators, it’s our job to use the right words to speak to our audience to achieve our desired results. In other words, we need to be aware of the power of words! Let’s take a look at five words content creators “should” avoid if they want to keep their audience engaged.

Content Creators “Should” Avoid 5 Words:

1. “Just”

This word is often used as a filler, but it can actually do more harm than good. When you use the word “just,” you’re implying that what you have to say is not important or that you’re not an expert on the topic. For example, instead of saying “I just wanted to let you know that my new product is launching next week,” try something like “My new product is launching next week and I wanted to make sure you were in the loop.” See the difference?

2. “Actually”

This is another word that is often used as a filler, but it can make you sound unsure of yourself. If you find yourself using the word “actually” frequently, take a step back and re-read what you’ve written. Chances are, there’s a better way to phrase it. For example, instead of saying “I actually think that social media is important for businesses,” try something like “I believe that social media is important for businesses.”

3. “I think”

If you’re not sure about something, then don’t say it. When you use phrases like “I think” or “in my opinion,” it makes your statement sound weaker than it actually is. So if you’re not 100% confident in what you’re saying, leave these words out and let your readers decide for themselves.

4. “Very”

This is another filler word. It doesn’t give any information (it’s not descriptive) and it doesn’t add anything to your writing. I recently came across this quote:

Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very’; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. — Mark Twain (I saw it credited to him as well as William Allen White)

I love that suggestion! Now I want to write very just for the sake of getting to replace it with the word damn ?

5. “To be honest”

Have you ever noticed how people only use the phrase “to be honest” when they’re about to say something negative? For example, instead of saying “to be honest, I’m not sure if I’m qualified for this speaking opportunity,” try switching that a positive phrase like “I’m confident I have the experience needed for this speaking opportunity.” This small change can make a big impact on how people perceive you and your business.

Choosing your words carefully is an important part of being a content creator. To recap, the 5 words to avoid if you want to keep your audience engaged are:

Just

Actually

I think

Very

To be honest

Remember to choose your words wisely and avoid these 5 words if you want to write effective content.

Outsourcing to a Virtual Assistant Whether you’re an author, speaker, coach, content creator, or any […]

Outsourcing to a Virtual Assistant

Whether you’re an author, speaker, coach, content creator, or any other solo entrepreneur, you probably feel like you’re wearing all the hats in your biz… because, well you probably are If that’s the case, it’s probably time to outsource to a virtual assistant (VA). But maybe the thought of outsourcing overwhelms you…

How do you get started?

How do you find a good VA?

What tasks should you give them?

And more importantly, how do you make sure you don’t end up feeling even more overwhelmed by the process?

4 Tips for Outsourcing to A Virtual Assistant Without Losing Your Mind

1. Define what you need help with.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s crucial that you take the time to sit down and think about what tasks you need assistance with. Once you have a good understanding of what areas you need help with, it’ll help you find the right VA for your needs.

2. Find the right fit.

Once you know what kind of support you need, it’s time to start looking for candidates. Keep in mind not all VAs are created equal – some offer tech support, general support, and more – I offer a mixture. Ask for referrals from those around you – masterminds you participate in, groups, etc. Make a list of at least 3 potential VAs, reach out to them, and ask to schedule a consult call. It should be a Zoom call (or some sort of video call) so that you can get a feel for their personality and see if they’re a good fit for your business.

Once you’ve had a consult call with them, make a decision. Let the VA, you chose to work with, know when you would like to work with them. Don’t forget to let the others know you decided to not use their services at this time.

3. Communicate clearly.

Now that you’ve made the decision and are ready to start working with your new VA, it’s important to communicate your expectations. Discuss your communication style, working hours, and deadlines upfront so that there are no surprises later on. It’s also a good idea to send over a list of tasks that need to be completed each week or month so that they always know what needs to be done.

As a side note, expectations are something that can be talked about during a consult call. In fact, for me personally, when I’m talking to a potential client I prefer to ask about their expectations at that time. This way, if they’re looking for somebody to handle customer support on the weekends (for example) I know right away this isn’t a fit for me and we won’t spend more time moving forward only to find later on that we’re not a fit.

Communicating your expectations will help ensure that both you and your virtual assistant are on the same page and avoid any misunderstandings down the road.

4. Schedule check-ins.

When outsourcing, it’s important to schedule regular check-ins so that you can touch base with your VA and see how things are going. These check-ins can be done via email, video call, or even just a quick chat on the phone. Checking in regularly will help ensure that things are running smoothly and that there are no major hiccups along the way.

These check-ins can become less frequent the longer you and your virtual assistant have been working together. For example, one of my clients, I’ve been working with for years now, we go months without checking in via Zoom. We touch base via email or Trello when necessary but other than that because I’ve worked with her for so long and know the ins and outs of her biz and what needs to be done regularly (by me) there’s no need for us to touch base on a consistent basis. Back in the beginning, though, we were touching base weekly (sometimes daily).

Outsourcing to a virtual assistant doesn’t have to be overwhelming—if you follow these simple tips! By taking the time to define your goals, find the right fit, set expectations early on, and schedule regular check-ins, you’ll be able to successfully delegate tasks without losing your mind in the process. So what are you waiting for? Start outsourcing today!

Starting an online business We’re going way back to 2006… that’s when Tishia Saves Time […]

Starting an online business

We’re going way back to 2006… that’s when Tishia Saves Time was born! Fast forward to today and boy oh boy have things changed! When I started, the internet landscape looked a lot different than it does today. But more importantly, I looked a lot different as a person (I don’t mean physically, I’m referring to emotionally/mentally) and virtual assistant. Thank goodness for personal growth

Once in a while, I like to stop and think about what’s working now that I wish I would have done sooner. I thought I would share some of those things with you…

If I had to start an online business today, here are 5 things I would do differently

Hire a coach right away

Start building my list from the get-go

Start building relationships with my list on a consistent basis

Start affiliate marketing

Fire clients that weren’t a fit (or better yet, don’t start working with them in the first place)

Let me explain…

1. Hire a coach sooner

I never believed I could afford to work with a coach. I couldn’t ‘justify’ the expense especially back in the very beginning when making only $8/hr! And back then, I was a broke a** single mom so I couldn’t afford it. But once I finally made the decision to step out of my comfort zone and hire a coach, several years in, I quickly saw the value in it and how I had spent several years missing out on the magic that happens when working with a coach!

2. Start building my list sooner

I signed up for Aweber back in 2006, not long after launching Tishia Saves Time, and used them up until 2020 when I made the move to Active Campaign. Even though I signed up for the software I didn’t put a whole lot of effort (okay, let’s be real here – I didn’t put ANY effort) into building a list. I’m a little bit embarrassed to tell you that my list is smaller than 100… even now (in 2022)! In my defense, it was larger but I recently went through a big list cleanup. I cleaned out all my unsubscribes, undeliverable, and any that hadn’t opened an email in 6+ months. So that took it from 189 to 58.

On the one hand, it’s embarrassing to admit how small of a list I have, but on the other hand, I love that list! Those are my peeps. They interact and engage with me WHEN I email them. I’m cultivating relationships while offering value, resources, tools, and knowledge to them. It’s time to put some serious effort into not just building my list but being more consistent with emailing them which brings me to the next thing I’d do differently…

3. Email regularly

I won’t even tell you how long I would go in between mailing this list. Well, okay I’ll tell you… for the longest time (years), I only mailed on holidays.

EEEEEEK!

Do you know how hard it is to build relationships and establish your credibility with people you’re not in touch with on a regular basis? It’s hard! If you’re only connecting with them a couple of times a year they’ll probably forget who you are and unsubscribe when you do email them next.

Sometimes I still struggle with the consistency in emailing on a regular basis, even after all these years. But I have two awesome resources at my fingertips that help if I don’t know what to email:

Email Practice Club – Angela Wills runs this.

Email Marketing Membership – Liz Wilcoz runs this.

They both provide something different in their memberships. Angela offers prompts but Liz offers templates. I find myself using Liz’s membership more than Angela’s because I like the templates and having examples of how someone used the template rather than just a prompt to use.

4. Start affiliate marketing sooner

Another one, if I could go back and do it over again, would be to start affiliate marketing sooner. Sure, I tried it here and there. It was one of those things like throw some spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks type of things. I made it more complicated than it is. I had excuses as to why I couldn’t do it – people on my list have already seen the things I’m mailing about from everyone else, etc.

I’m putting more time and effort into affiliate marketing these days. I still am not getting a huge ROI (return on investment) but I get giddy when I do get those ‘you earned a commission’ affiliate notices!

5. Fire clients that aren’t a fit (or better yet, don’t work with them to begin with)

I would like to say I learned this lesson early on in my Virtual Assistant journey. Unfortunately, I didn’t. I can’t even remember how many times I had clients that left me crying, frustrated, angry, and everything in between but I continued working with them because I “needed” the money.

Time and time again, my coach, and people in the group coaching mastermind I’ve participated in for years, would tell me to let those clients go and see what doors opened after letting them go. But I’d hang on and hang on and hang on… until I reached a breaking point and let them go.

And guess what happened? EACH. AND. EVERY. TIME?! Yep, the door opened for the “perfect” client to come into my life.

Today, I am thrilled with the handful of VIP clients I work with. I enjoy the creativity I get to use in their business tasks. I love what their businesses represent and what they’re creating more of in the world. It excites me to work with them in their businesses.

The one thing I finally came to realize, several years ago when I let go of a client that was not a good fit, was that by working with someone who isn’t a fit I’m doing a disservice to them (and myself). Meaning, that if they’re not a good fit and I’m not excited to be working on their projects/with them then I’m not giving them my 100% and that isn’t fair to them, myself, or their business. It’s better for them to find the “perfect” VA that will be excited to have them as a client.

All that to say, if I were starting an online business today I would do a lot of things differently!

What about you? If you could do it all over, what would you have done sooner? Leave a comment & let me know

How to Unplug on Vacation When You’re a Solopreneur

The Solopreneurs Unplugged Vacation As a solopreneur, the lines between work and life can get […]

The Solopreneurs Unplugged Vacation

As a solopreneur, the lines between work and life can get pretty blurred – I know because I’ve been working as a solopreneur since 2006! And when you love what you do, it can be hard to step away from your business for even a day, let alone a week or two. But just because you’re the boss doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a vacation.

In fact, taking breaks is one of the best things you can do for your business. Time away from your desk gives you a chance to recharge, refocus, and come back to your work with fresh eyes and new ideas. Plus, vacations are good for your mental and physical health.

I remember how, up until about 2018, I would go on a Florida family vacation every year with the intention of unplugging. As a successful Virtual Assistant booked with several VIP clients, I would never travel without my laptop because there was always one more client project I “had” to do. While that was true, the real problem was I never set a boundary with myself (or my clients) that allowed me to unplug for a week-long vacation.

In November 2018 when my boyfriend and I started planning our first vacation together I mentioned having to bring my laptop. Without missing a beat, he said, “isn’t the point of working for yourself to have the freedom to not work for a week if you don’t want to?” And that was the moment I knew it was time to set a boundary and let clients know I would be completely unplugged and unavailable for that week.

That was the most amazing vacation – not just because it was Hawaii, something I’d argue is the most magical place – not Disney World but because it was the first time I had ever taken a vacation and NOT traveled with a laptop! I came back so rejuvenated, refreshed, and excited to get back to work.

And guess what? Every vacation since is a vacation where I’m unplugged and unavailable and my clients appreciate the refreshed spirit I come back with!

So how do you do it? How do solopreneurs truly unplug and enjoy vacations? Here are 4 tips:

1. Set an Out-of-Office Message

One of the simplest things you can do to ensure that you’re not interrupted on vacation is to set an out-of-office message for your email and voicemail. That way, anyone who tries to reach you will know that you’re unavailable and when they can expect a response.

2. Hire a Virtual Assistant

Consider hiring a virtual assistant to help with tasks like customer service, scheduling, and social media while you’re away. A good virtual assistant will free up your time so that you can enjoy your vacation without having to worry about work.

3. Prepare Ahead Of Time

Take care of as much as you can before you go. This means finishing up projects, scheduling social media posts, and generally getting everything in order so that you can truly relax while you’re away – or get things sent to your virtual assistant so they can take care of things when you’re away.

4. Set Boundaries With Your Clients

Before you even start packing your bags, have a conversation with your clients and let them know when you’ll be gone and when they can expect to hear back from you. This will help set expectations and prevent them from emailing or calling you while you’re trying to relax. Of course, if you don’t work with clients this one won’t apply to you

Taking a vacation as a solopreneur may require some extra planning — but it’s definitely worth it. Stepping away from your business for even a few days can help refresh your mind, improve your productivity, and give you some much-needed perspective on your work. So go ahead and book that trip — your business (and yourself) will thank you for it later.

If so, you’re not alone. Coming up with fresh ideas for blog posts can be tough, especially if you feel like you’ve already covered everything there is to cover in your industry.

Luckily, there are a few methods you can use to jump-start your creativity and come up with some great ideas for new blog posts. So if you’re feeling stuck, don’t despair!

5 Easy Ways To Come Up With Blog Post Ideas

1. Answer common questions from customers or clients.

A quick way to come up with blog post ideas is to answer questions that your customers or clients commonly ask. Not only will this solve your writer’s block, but it will also provide valuable information for your community. Got a question that you get asked all the time? There’s your next blog post!

Bonus Tip: reach out to your community and invite them to ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA). When you do this, be sure to invite them to ask you anything about the topic you wish to answer – don’t leave it open to ask you anything about whatever they want For example, my coach Kelly McCausey invited her community to ‘Ask Me Anything’ about content creation. Here is an example of how she used these AMA questions to create content.

2. Share tips or hacks related to your industry.

If you’re looking for an easy way to come up with fresh content, try sharing tips or hacks related to your industry. These types of posts are always popular because they offer readers quick and easy ways to improve their lives or businesses. Plus, they tend to be fairly quick and easy to write, which is a bonus if you’re short on time.

3. Highlight a recent change or development in your industry.

Stay current with recent changes or developments in your industry by highlighting them in a blog post. This is a great way to show that you’re keeping up with the latest trends and demonstrate your expertise at the same time. Your readers will appreciate being kept in the loop, and you’ll have an easy topic to write about! Win-win!

Word of warning: while it can be a great way to keep your community updated on new changes, keep in mind this more than likely won’t be evergreen content. For example, if you’re writing about a recent change on a social platform, Instagram for example, that content more than likely won’t be relevant in a year or even a few months!

4. Share a personal story related to your business.

Sharing a personal story related to your business is a great way to add some personality to your content and connect with your readers on a more personal level. We all love a good story, so this is an easy way to pique your readers’ interest and keep them coming back for more! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that personal stories tend to be pretty quick and easy to write—a win for busy solopreneurs!

5. Keep a running list of ideas.

Some people are compulsive note-takers and list makers (raising my hand here! lol). Carry around a little notebook or use the notes app on your phone to jot down ideas as they come to you. That way, when you sit down to write, you already have a list of potential topics to choose from.

I like to use Trello to keep track of all my content ideas. Especially, now that I’m jumping on the YouTube bandwagon and will be producing even more content.

I know I said 5 tips, but there are so many ways to come up with blog post ideas. Here are some more ideas for you:

Read A Lot: Don’t limit yourself to writing only. Reading a lot can help you come up with loads of ideas. Read widely, and you’ll probably find it’s even better. Best of all, read something that challenges your ideas about something and it’ll be sure to generate loads of great blog post ideas for you.

Ask Lots Of Questions: Get into the habit of asking questions about anything and everything. Why isn’t that abandoned old building being used for something? How did this banana get all the way to the supermarket? How is this computer made? What kinds of bacteria live in the fridge? The more questions you ask, the better. Every question asked is a potential to spark a blog post idea!

Look at your Google Analytics data: Google Analytics is a goldmine of information about your website visitors and what they’re interested in. Take a look at which of your blog posts are getting the most traffic and consider writing a follow-up post or doing a series on that topic. You can also look at the keywords people are using to find your website and use that as inspiration for future blog posts.

Check out what’s trending on social media: Social media is a great way to see what people are talking about and what’s important to them right now. Pay attention to what topics are trending on Twitter and Facebook and consider writing about those topics on your blog. Just be sure to put your own spin on it so that your post isn’t just regurgitating what everyone else is saying.

There’s no need to spend hours staring at a blank screen wondering what to write about for your next blog post! By using one (or more) of the methods described above, you can easily come up with fresh ideas for new content that will engage and inform your readers. So what are you waiting for? Get started brainstorming those blog post ideas today!
