I disagree.

When you find something that works - you have established habits - you do not want to change.

This is my usual pattern of behaviour.

For many years I had a standard land line in my home and office. For in between and any emergencies I had a pager. This worked fine.

In one of my consulting partnerships - the other half was completly insecure about everything - he had to be always connected - had to have all the latest stuff. He presented his image using external objects. He believed that if he had the best watch, suit, car and electronic toys - then he was the best.

I am old fashioned - I presented that I had the knowledge, the ability and could be trusted.

My partner "wasted" about $60,000 on execessive car leases, suits that went out of style in 2 years, two lost watches, outrageous cell phone bills, gained 20 pounds with monster dinners to show off - then none of the expensive suits fitted.

I "wasted" my time talking to the clients - asking what they really wanted and built a rapport.

After 2 years my partner left to work with someone more "modern". After another year with the more "modern partner" - he went bankrupt. He is now in and out of rehab.

I asked our clients what they thought of the new technology my "partner" was always demonstrating. They thought it was wonderful. They could see it, experience it and then decide if it was functional for them. With no cost to them. Clients and contacts often said to me that they invited my "partner" over just to see the new toys - they really did not want to do business.

Using and showing off new technology can open doors. However, once through the door you still have to prove that you have the knowledge, ability and can be trusted. If your technology does not work or is wildly expensive - then you really lose.

You also have to be careful. Using new technology can be a distraction. You can become a slave to the technology. You lose your freedom and waste far too much money on something that when analysed does not contribute any revenue.

When it comes down to it - Do you want to spend your time marketing for the technology companies? - or doing your real work?. Too many people are confused about the real priorities.

I am not a late adapter - I am someone that only migrates when technology can serve me - save me time - make work more efficient - save money.

I am looking for a new communication system - I will tell you more later.

The Parya Trillium Foundation works with the Toronto Persian Community

Established in 2002, the Parya Trillium Foundation is a not-for-profit federally registered Canadian charity. Parya hosts educational, social, cultural, art and recreational activities to meet the needs of Greater Toronto’s Persian-speaking community and the community at large.

Parya expanded its programming, services and facility at the exciting new location in Markham to include:
■ Arts & Ideas
■ Educational Programs
■ Health & Wellness
■ Newcomer Services
■ Persian Cultural Events
■ Seniors Programs
■ Sports & Recreation
■ Youth Programs

Persian Cultural Events
Some of highlights of these cultural events that promote a sense of belonging and harmony are Nowruz and Chaharshanbe-Suri.

Nowruz
One of the main events each year is to celebrate the secular Persian festival of Nowruz. Which is celebrated on the spring equinox and announces the begginning of the Persian calendar.

Chaharshanbe-Suri
Chaharshanbe-Suri falls on the last Wednesday of the Persian calendar year, and has its origins in the fire worshipping rituals of prehistoric inhabitants of the Iranian plateau beginning some three thousand seven hundred years ago.

Today the festival is celebrated in preparation for the first day of spring, as a prelude to the Iranian new year, Nowruz. This event is a purely secular celebration, in which Iranians come together to light bonfires in public spaces and leap over their flames.

As children, women and men jump through the fire they sing out "zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man," loosely translated to mean "take my yellow paleness and give me your red warmth." Leaping over the fire three times symbolically enacts the leaving behind of one's troubles and worries to embrace a fresh new beggining.

In order to help children learn about these cultural festivities, Parya hosted a Chaharshanbe-Suri event, filled with activities and fun, such as face painting, story hour, puppet show, and singing.
