Brickwork Lizards return to The Global cafe, Reading Jan 26th 2019

It was such a great night when Brickwork Lizards last played the lovely RISC,Global Cafe and World Shop that they're coming back for more!

Brickwork Lizards took shape after a chance encounter at a party, when Egyptian vocalist and oud player Tarik Beshir met Oxford rap scene stalwart Tom O’Hawk. Discovering a mutual love of the 1930s harmony group The Ink Spots, they dreamed up an entirely new sound that would combine pre-war jazz with Arabic and Middle Eastern music, paying tribute along the way to countless other styles.

Over the 13 years since, Brickwork Lizards have refined their line-up, adding guitar, drums and trumpet, alongside violin, cello and double bass, while building a dedicated fanbase with hundreds of gigs and festival appearances across the UK. The band’s members draw on a wide range of musical experiences, from critically-acclaimed Arabic classical ensembles (Oxford Maqam) to chart-topping pop groups (Saint Etienne).

One Night, Two musical tributes to The Bard

Paul Lodge will present a selection from Shakespeare in the Alley, a cycle of songs written with Richard Lodge in response to Shakespeare’s plays. The songs take words and phrases from Shakespeare and reflect on his characters and themes to create a humble homage that aims to capture some of the atmosphere and genius of the original works.

The Food of Love Project is an album commissioned by Tom McDonnell, director of the Oxford Shakespeare Jubilee 2016. It contains music mentioned or performed in Shakespeare’s plays. The performance will feature songs from Brickwork Lizards, Joe Swarbrick, The Children of the Midnight Chimes featuring Sebastian Reynolds and Flights of Helios.

The brilliant 9-piece band, Anda Union from Inner Mongolia first toured the UK in 2013 and stole the show everywhere. The band members all grew up in families 'with the music', several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way, and came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city. There they were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian but with a strong appeal to a western sensibility. The Krengel & Krause guitar duo combines a rousing mixture of different musical genres – from the worlds of jazz, swing, Flamenco, blues, pop & funk and Latin America their compositions blend into a harmonious whole. They perform original compositions and surprising adaptations of many well-known pieces with a boisterous energy and passion. At the same time howevcr these virtuosi leave a great deal of room for spontaneous interaction and improvisation. Each piece in their repertoire tells its own story or has its own little anecdote, tracing the paths and world-wide adventures of these two highly musical travel enthusiasts.
Andre Krengel, from Germany, is one of the leading guitarists in Europe. His first international gigs were in Spain and the south of France. He then went to the USA and toured with Leon Wilkinson and the new Lynnard Skynnard jamming with musicians from the Miami latin and Cuban music-scenes.

In 2005 he co-founded the prize winning band Sina Nossa (‘Our Destiny’), a Portuguese fado and world-music fusion band who were winners of the World Creole Music Festival.

The German press call Andre “traveller between cultures” and “the guitar wizard with magic hands“. You can’t help but be impressed when he switches between styles and cultures without losing its identity such is his virtuosity.

Singer-songwriter and guitarist, Robyn Hitchcock, started his career in Cambridge with an acoustic guitar and his loopy vocal style. He ended up in the melodic punk band The Soft Boys – a rather different sound to where he started.

Hitchcock later went solo, releasing his debut album ‘Black Snake Diamond Role’. The m...id-2000s saw him collaborating with various artists including Peter Buck of R.E.M. – they were known as Venus 3. These two great musicians will be performing at the beautiful concert hall of St John the Evangelist -just opposite the Iffley rd Running track.

One of the greatest guitarists around-John Renbourn is one of the fathers of contemporary British folk music and is one of the finest fingerstyle players in the world. Renbourn was a founder of the seminal group Pentangle, and his music fuses British and Celtic folk with blues, jazz, British early music, classic guitar, and Eastern styles. He has played with Paul ...Simon, Davey Graham, Stefan Grossman and Robin Williamson. His teaming with Bert Jansch, with whom he founded Pentangle, was a partnership that produced several albums.

Inspired by Big Bill Broonzy, Rambling Jack Elliot and Muddy Waters, Wizz Jones began as a Skiffle musician. Having worked with Long John Baldry and Davy Graham in Soho and toured Europe with a young Rod Stewart, Wizz formed a bluegrass duo with Pete Stanley during the 60s. Credited with having influenced Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph McTell, Wizz has played in the UK and US with his son Simeon.

The New Forbidden featuring (the one and only) Loyd Grossman

Loyd Grossman's American punk band Jet Bronx And The Forbidden was a cult hit in the early 1980s. In late 2007 the band rose from the ashes with a new line-up as The New Forbidden. Loyd asked old friend Valentine Guinness to sing lead vocal. They are joined by long-term collaborator James Baring on bass guitar, Mancunian Sam Stopford on drums, Kevin Pollard on keyboards and backing singers Leila and Lou.

In the last few years, pasta sauce king Loyd Grossman's band have been a regular draw on the London circuit and summer festival season - they have twice played at Glastonbury, Cornbury and Rebellion festivals. Their album 'Aint Doin Nothing' (produced by the legendary Geoff Haslam) was released in 2010 and a new EP is planned for late 2013 as well as a film documentary about the bands adventures. This will be The New Forbidden's debut Oxford show.

Local music magazine Nightshift were a big fan of Nova Kicks. This is a rare chance to see former frontman Clark Wiseman playing his own material. Expect thoughtful lyrics and great melodies along with Clark's superb vocals. It's a real treat to have him opening the show.

Paul Robeson is a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner.

When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment's liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel.

Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career.

The play is a roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life, and highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement.

It features much fiery oratory and some of his famous songs, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River.
