Tell us the story behind “Warrior for Life.”

I wrote “Warrior 4 Life” during a time in my artistry when I had been searching for myself. Back in 2008, after living with a New York Knick for nearly two years, I took a break from my long time recording group The Free Agents to pursue my education. Now a solo artist, I asked myself, “If I were to die tomorrow…do I have music that represents who I am as a person? Music that I would be proud to have played at my funeral?” From that point on, a gate to my soul was opened for exposure through my music. I would only write things I believe in; things that came to me naturally. “Warrior 4 Life” was the first record I wrote in my search to find myself as a true artist. I’m surprised you asked me about this record, cuz I put it online for a brief period but never really promoted it. I’m happy to know it reached some folks. I may release it again when the time is right.

Your music has been described as an alternative to feel good music. What artists or songs are your tops for “feel good music?”
Good question. “Feel good” music can vary depending on your mood at that particular moment. My feel good music ranges from smooth jazz to classical orchestra; Bruno Mars pop to Damian Marley reggae; Dru Hill R&B to J. Cole lyricism. A simple way to describe my taste is to say that I have a profound appreciation for well-written, thought-provoking music. I’ll even say that NPR talk radio is feel good music to me, because I become enlightened on world topics while listening to the tones and cadences of people’s voices. The antithesis to my type of feel good music, however, would be songs that promote ignorant, reckless and culturally degrading content; the stuff that makes an entire generation of young people look ignorant. That said, I feel justified in admitting that most of my listening time is spent writing to instrumentals.

Selling nearly 9,000 self-manufactured albums by hand ain't never been easy, in 2003 or now. How did you and your team pull it off?
The Free Agents had heart to match the gifts God gave us. We were a trio: we all sang, we all rapped, and Smoke and Lex are from the islands so we infused reggae in our songs. Peep how we sold our albums: first, we would go to South Beach, the Hard Rock, the mall, a college campus – virtually anywhere we could find people hanging out at their leisure. One of us would approach a group of friends and tell them, “I don’t mean to intrude, but I’m here with my recording group. We’d like to sing something for you.” Reactions varied, but most of the time people were skeptics. Right then and there we would bust out with a full-out three-piece harmony chorus, spit a verse with live beat-box and ad-lib backups, go back into the harmonized chorus and finish up with a whole new crowd of people surrounding us. Man I tell ya, we blew people’s minds when they heard us live. We were the baddest acapella group around, and that’s how we sold 9,000 self-manufactured albums by hand.

A Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies can open lots of doors. Can you share your experience?
I majored in Communication Studies because I know that communication is the basis of civilization, and if I learn to communicate well the world will open up to me. It took me eight years after high school to finish my Bachelors degree. I kept attending college off-and-on cuz I was always heavily invested in music and was constantly booking recording sessions and shows. But when I did attend classes, I made it a point to weave music into my research. I would center the subjects of my papers around topics like ‘the effects of positive messages in music,’ and would even rhyme out presentations for my classes. It worked, cuz I made it through college and graduated with a 3.96 GPA, all because I stayed true to my vision and myself. Oh, and I managed to build up a strong core fan base at my university as a result of always being myself and always being about music.

When you're not making music, what do you enjoy?
When am I not making music? Ha. For real though, my number one priority outside of music is spending quality time with my fiancé, Dove, and our two-year-old son, Zion. And I love to travel. I like real simple stuff like sipping tea or coffee in places I’ve never been. Other than that I enjoy playing ball, lifting weights and swimming as often as I can. And Kung Fu. I feel clear when I practice Kung Fu.

TETRYS is pretty dope; can you share the story behind it?
Ahh, much appreciated. TETRYS – Get In Where U Fit In is my second solo album, following No Hype Just Hope. What I did was put together a compilation of songs that show my versatility as a writer and made it available for free download. In that regard it could be called a “free mixtape,” but it’s all original. The concept came about by comparing my songwriting process to the actual game of Tetris. I describe it as such: “Thoughtz drop down…I rotate shapez…figure out the best fit and then I put em in place – TETRYS.” So far I have three music videos online for songs off TETRYS. Introduce us to your team.
Where to start…TK, my right-hand dude. He’s a producer, he’s an educator, he’s an outstanding brotha, and he’s the original DJ for Black Violin. TK has helped me out in immeasurable ways. Next is Nicko Rebel Music. Nicko’s a Reggae producer, and his riddims are dopeness. He executive produced my third solo project – the Badd Habitz EP – which is gonna be released in the next couple months. Itz gonna be fiya. Next we have AFR Clothing. We’re “Educating Children One Shirt at a Time,” and I’m the Chief Brand Ambassador for the company. AFR Clothing sells fashion-forward AFRo-centric apparel, then donates twenty percent of the revenue directly to the tuition fees of children in need. We also have a non-profit arm, the Amani Hope Foundation (look out for our Amani Hope Tour, coming to a city near you real soon). I gotta shout out the Stand Up Men organization, created by my big bro Lex Kelly. Stand Up Men is dedicated to community service, community enrichment, education, rehabilitation and mentorship. I’m also an artist representative for Employed By My Vision. EBMV is a motivational mentorship organization that was formed to inspire people to find their purpose, create a vision and take action. Johnny Mars and Chris Wynter of Singlehouse Publishing are also major players in my journey as an artist. And I can’t leave out my good people at New Twelve. They’re a multimedia company that wears many hats. For a start, check out my website – New Twelve developed it. There are so many folks to name, but I gotta hit the brakes for right now. My appreciation runs deep for every person involved in my career, no matter what the capacity of his or her role is.

So far in your life/career what's been the most funniest/craziest moment?
The funniest/craziest moment in my career has got to be when my group (The Free Agents) and I got thrown out of Disney World for singing. We were that good, I tell you lol. We happened to be in Orlando one day – I don’t remember what for – so we stopped through Disney world to try our luck selling CDs. We found a nice little spot with a lot of people passing through, did what we do best, and started drawing crowds and making sales. Our performances were actually drawing people outside from within the Disney souvenir stores, and apparently the Disney gangsters didn’t like that too much. We got approached by security guards with mean mugs, which was actually hilarious because they had on black polo shirts with Mickey Mouse logos on the chest hahaha. They informed us that we were costing Disney money, and then they escorted us off the property. All they had to do was offer us a better platform to sing on, and we would’ve cut ‘em in on some of the cash lol. Oh well.

Any advice for those looking to follow your footsteps?
My best advice is to set the priorities in your life. Before you try to accomplish anything, figure out who you are; that’s the only way you’re gonna know if you’re doing it right. Know what matters; know who matters; know what’s worth your time and what’s valuable enough to share. That’s what makes a genuine artist. If it’s not valuable, don’t waste your time or anyone else’s. Me, I do this to show the world that anything is possible with God. I do this because I was given the gift of creativity and because I have a strong calling to share my gift with mankind. I couldn’t stop writing if I wanted to, itz just what I’m wired to do. And I do this to make sure that my family, friends, loved ones and supporters are taken care of long down the road. I ain’t just out here talkin bullshit about how cool I am, how much money I make or some other foolishness like that. I’m writing reality in innovative ways. Please don’t be just another sloppy carbon copy of somebody else. Be yourself. The music industry has too many replicas on display; we need originals.

Ha Candy - Welcome to Ha Candy Magazine how are you?

Kayla - I'm good. I can't complain at all.

Ha Candy - Where did you grow up?

Kayla – I grew up in Houston, TX. My favorite memories growing up and even to this day are any time i had a dance performance.

Ha Candy - How would your friends and your haters describe you?

Kayla – The people who don't know me think I'm stuck up, people who know me think I'm real laid back and chill, my friends think I'm outspoken, aggressive, and very silly.

Ha Candy - What’s the 411 behind your tattoos? Kayla – I have a Chinese symbol that means strength on the back of my neck and underneath it says Love.Live.Life. I have a symbol standing for loyalty on the side of my neck, an ex name on my side, a dancer on my hip with the words “Dance like no one’s watching, more symbols standing for love and faith on the front of my hips and my cousin birthday and day of death on my foot in roman numerals.

Ha Candy - Are you just a model or a “Jill” of all trades?

Kayla – I'm definitely not “just a model"! I attend Southern University A& M College, I hold down a job and I dance. I danced for my high school and then my university when I started college. I was captain of both teams and I'm training to audition for a Professional NBA or NFL team now.

Ha Candy - When you're hanging out having a good time where are you most likely to be found?

Kayla – There is no telling, I do not go out much just for fun because my schedule is so busy but when i do, there is no telling where you can catch me, but my instagram will always let you know lol

Ha Candy - On average, how many guys hit on you, and how many actually catch your attention?

Kayla – On average? Omg, words can't explain and I can't even keep up! How many catch my attention? NONE!

Ha Candy - 2013 what are your goals?

Kayla – My goals are to graduate college, make a Pro dance team, and be known and loved all around for my all around diversity, and just be very successful and HAPPY !

Ha Candy - Besides your awesome tattoos in all the right places, what separates you from other models?

Kayla – What separates me from some other models is that It's not only my physical makeup but the actual talent and drive I pose as a woman. My look can be very versatile at times as well.

Ha Candy - Tell us something wild or funny that few people know about you .

Kayla – Something that most people find funny or at least always laugh at me about is how clumsy i am, it can actually be quite embarrassing sometimes !

Ha Candy - Finish this story. Dear Diary................

Kayla - Dear Diary - I envisioned myself today and what my future would be and the person who will be sharing it with me. I will leave this nameless and just share the romantic takeover my mind, body and soul went through. It was captivating in all sense romance and love. Hallmark could not make such a card to describe the characteristics of this wonderful, mind blowing & extremely beautiful person that my heart feel for. The high this person gives me is like no other climax I ever received.. To be continued....

Measure his level of loyalty & commitment to his hometown “The Rocket City”. We chop it up about is history, goals, and impressive achievements. Ha Candy - Welcome Jurian Isabelle, where are you from?
Jurian Isabelle - I'm from here in the Rocket City. As far as growing up, I remember the most being "weird" lol. Thinking up concepts and video ideas and stuff before all of this was "cool" lol. Back in the 90s everybody wanted to be like Jordan. I wanted to be like George Lucas and Spielberg and Hype Williams. Of course now its the "cool" thing to do and everyone does it.

Ha Candy - How long have you been directing videos?
Jurian Isabelle - This might sound cliche but I honestly think its a God-Given gift. I've always done videos, even back to when I was four or five years old with my dads JVC camera lol. A lot of it just came natural. I learned a lot of technical stuff when I went to school. But most of it I already was
doing, I just didn't know what the terminology was. Professionally you could say about 2 years though.

Ha Candy - What city are you representing ?
Jurian Isabelle - Huntsville of course! lol. I really love my hometown and I love working with
upcoming talent here. Even though I've worked with a lot of people from different cities, I'm honestly local artists biggest fans. A lot of them want to shoot videos and they hit me up and be like "I want to shoot a video to this". And I come back "That's cool, but you ever thought about shooting to such and such" and they be like "You listen to my music?" and I be like "yeah, of course" lol. I've got a real good ear for music and beats so a lot of times I suggest songs they may have not paid much attention to. Its so much diverse talent in the city. Everybody has their own style which is really unique for local music scenes. Most of the time every artist from a certain city sounds the same, but here its like a hot plate of talent. You got some of this, some of that. And of course it hits me really hard when something happens to a local artist, for example LaChris, because I have a creative connection to a lot of local artists here doing music, art, and film. I feel connected to them in a way because at the end of the day we all are following our dreams, or what's in our hearts.

Ha Candy - I know this is a hard one but so far what's been your most memorable video shoot?

Jurian Isabelle - Yeah, that's kinda hard to say, because every shoot is different. You're working with different people every time in different locations and circumstances, so every shoot has its funny moments and magic moments. Alot of times the best moments are unexpected, unplanned moments. Like having three cars at the beginning of a shoot, and ending up with like 40 because people see you going down the parkway shooting lol (Roller Skate) Or having it snow in a cemetery (J.O. Five Shots/Gettin 2 Da Money) or a simple house party in Bama Starz new video 'Cool MF'.

Ha Candy - Before hiring you to direct a video what should an artist do?
Jurian Isabelle - Nah, I'm a very approachable person. Every artist is different. Some artists trust you completely and they ask which song would be good for a video, or which song I have a vision for, some come with the song already in mind and ask me what I think. And some people have the song & somewhat of an idea and its a collaborative effort. In totality it really depends on the artist.

Ha Candy - Do you have any other awesome talents?
Jurian Isabelle - I'm not the best person to talk about myself lol. But I like to do anything that has to do with creativity. So, taking photos, designing flyers/ cd covers, I've dabbled in clothing design and graphic design (because I love fashion and art). Writing screenplays, directing movies. Really
anything that has to do with creative self expression, because at the end of the day it all falls under the same umbrella.

Ha Candy - What's one thing few people know about you?
Jurian Isabelle - I'm a very spiritual person. I'm real close to God. Doing videos and stuff is cool, but I've been thinking lately I need to do more to bring people to Christ. It's so much death and destruction going on and we are faced with so many challenges in our lives that we have to overcome that we need more nourishment than just the superficial stuff, (cars, clothes, girls, etc). None of that stuff helps you when you are faced with real life situations. They are just temporary substitutes that keep you pacified, but they don't bring you true peace or happiness. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-materialism, I love fashion and clothes too lol. But it has to be in perspective. And we have to be cognizant of the fact that that's not what's important. And not what's going to give us everlasting life after we leave here.

Ha Candy - Any advice to aspiring directors out here?
Jurian Isabelle - I have mad respect for everyone that has been doing videography and those coming up. Everybody here locally I love and respect all their work. It can be kinda weird keeping close contact with people that are doing the same thing as you, because the initial reflex of anyone is to
draw up in your corner and say its me against the world lol. But its important to have that line of communication and respect for people doing what you do. Its been some crazy rumors in the past that we all are against each other and this and that, but thats not the case at all. Specifically me and Jude Boi talk a lot and will more than likely work together in the future on some projects. And Deno was there before really anybody in the city knew I was doing videos. Waaay back in the Myspace days lol. Hooking me up with projects and encouraging me. So I will always remember that and I love him for that. That always stuck with me, and I try to do that with other videographers that are coming up like Christopher Cotton and Ray Ray, who I think are amazing. So advice wise, I would just say stay humble, even with everybody telling you this and that, stay humble and be a good person, grind 24 hours and pray up so God can look after you. You run into a lot of different people in life with different mindsets, some positive and some dangerous. So you just have to pray that God protects you.

Ha Candy - Shout outs?
Jurian Isabelle - I just wanna shout out everybody in the city that are making moves. Specifically my family Concrete Magazine, Angela and Rick who have, in a year's time, just single-handedly, completely put a face on all the talent in the city and state, Masheeka Bone, who is going to be doing some super hot stuff in 2013, my brothers and cousins in the Syndicate, who are also working for some hot stuff for 2013, Penelope Louise, upcoming model and anyone who has ever encouraged me or said anything positive. In this business its so much negativity and people want to tear you down, so I just want to thank anybody who has complimented me and my work, I really appreciate it.

Ha Candy - What should we look out for in 2013?
Jurian Isabelle - 2013 is going to be soooo amazing. Especially for the city of Huntsville. Its so much on the horizon, a lot I can't even say because I would get in trouble lol. But safe to say its going to be a good year. And there's a rumor about another Grind Nation coming up too lol

Currently Jurian is finishing up a movie by two local playwrights called "The Bobby Pin Diaries" They’re basically taking the stage play and turning it into a feature with all local actors/actresses and doing a mixtape/soundtrack to it with all female artists. A large part of the production will be handled by Brandon Pair, who is a genius. Its going to be amazing. The Grind Nation documentary is dropping this month, which was an amazing, historic night in Huntsville. He’s also going to start working on his first feature film "The Last Disciples". All local artists/actors. You can catch him traveling to Jersey, New York and Atlanta with many commercial projects on the horizon.

I met Jurian on the set of a video shoot. With a confident ease he directed everyone toward a common goal and delivered an experience. His visions are high definition, cutting edge, and accentuate the talents of artists, models, fans, and industry professionals. Jurian works closely with local artists and gives them the same quality if not better than most noteable video directors. Lets be honest a “Local artist video” can stick out like a Kardashian on a gospel show. However Jurian Isabelle exceeds and elevates all expectations with his own style. I personally encourage anyone that values their career or business, to invest in Jurian Isabelle.

Butta Verses (Bio): A meticulous lyricist and writer, Butta Verses was introduced to underground Hip-Hop audiences with the lofty endorsement of De La Soul, something only a few MCs can actually claim. Born and bred in the Bronx, Butta (aka John Cullen) embraced Hip-Hop culture early on with street ciphers and battle-rap freestyles, serving as his lyrical training camp. In his teens, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, FL, around 1993.

Hip-Hop music proved to be his only constructive outlet. Around the turn of the new millennium, Butta Verses helped put together the Glee Club Detention, a collective of prospective artists and DJs who supported each other in getting their music heard. In 2003, some of his work with the crew landed in the lap of De La Soul's Maseo, who was beginning to set up operations in Florida. Maseo took Butta under his wing, signing him to his fledgling Bear Mountain imprint, and soon De La Soul MCs Posdnuos and Trugoy the Dove were backing the newcomer as well.

After his proper debut on the track "No" for De La Soul's The Grind Date (2004), Butta Verses seemed to be in all the right circles. He was the opening act for many worldwide tours headlined by artists like Common, John Legend, and, of course, De La Soul. Some of his music was also being licensed for television use, including for Saturday Night Live, MTV's The Real World, and A&E's b>Dog the Bounty Hunter. However, frustrated with sitting on the sidelines, in addition to having a finished album that received no proper promotion or distribution (Brand Spankin' was only available online), the eager MC left Bear Mountain. With a new 12" single, "Jones in Ya Bones," in 2007, Butta Verses rebounded fairly quickly, releasing Reality BV that same year.
