Singapore Scoot is Recruiting

I was following the birth of a new baby of SIA, Singapore Airlines, the Scoot. It will be a new long hauled low cost airline competing with the Malaysian AirAsia x.

Scoot has started to recruit its staff. Over fifty pilots have been recruited and the airline is in the process of employing over 200 cabin crews. With the planned first flight in June this year, the airline is following the timeline to recruit and training of its staff. Most likely, it will rely on the training facilities and the programs of its owner, the Singapore Airlines.

According to this video, over 1000 people applied online. The airline, like the majority in this region does not go for experienced applicants. It is easier to train and shape younger inexperienced person.

As this a low cost carrier, there are a small difference in the selection criteria. The airline is going to basic, the beauty and polished mannerism is not what it look for. It wants people that can serve and keep the passengers occupied in the long sectors of its journey.

One of the item that will be unique for Singapore Scoot will be, the crews are expected to share room.

Resume Processing

Many of the jobs applicants, including the would-be air hostess may not be aware of the processes that take place at the airline processing center. This is how the posted mails are process in a local airline:

a. The advertisement will stipulate that the applicant should send the resume in an envelope and mark "air hostess resume" on the top left hand corner of the envelop.

b. At the mail sorting center, you may have a number of large bags with label for various functions, one of which is the "air hostess resume". The other can be "other jobs".

c. When the hundreds of applications arrive, the clerk will just drop the right envelops int the appropriate box

Imagine if you forget to write the post on the envelope, it will go into the miscellaneous jobs which may not be processed in time.

The airline can have the policy of reviewing 1000 applications only due to the limited resources. The improperly marked enveloped may not have the chance.

d. Then the mails will be opened and separated. Those that meet the basic requirements will be separated.

That is why, it it very important to address all the stated requirements, examples..

- Nationality - state your compliance

- age - state your age

- Height -

- Education -

- Language proficiency

and other requirements

If you miss one, you may miss the chance, as the airline does not have the time to pursue your applications. There may be a thousand others that are seeking the job.

e. Then the airline will contact you, either by phone, email or post. Please make sure you have all these contacts ready posted in your application.

This is an example of how the applicants are processes. The initial part is done by the clerks at the mail processing center before the bag is delivered to application processing which can be part of Human Resource department or the cabin crew department itself. They are dealing with large number of applications and do not have the time to look after any errors or incomplete applications. So always remember, when your are applying for the job of air hostess, or any other jobs, always comply to the stated requirements.

arabic speaking air hostess for Malaysia

In its effort to upgrade the services for the Middle Eastern, Malaysia airlines has trained a group of 25 cabin crews in speak Arabic. The program consist of 100 hour of face to face instruction conducted by a local Arabic School and conducted at MAA, or Malaysia Airlines Academy in Kelana Jaya Malaysia. For most the crew, Arabic language is not foreign, as the majority are muslims and they are able to read the Quran and write in Jawi, the Arabic text. However for a non muslim the task is challenging, as the pronunciation is totally out of the ordinary.

After 100 hours, the crews are able to converse with the travelers. They are able to make the flight announcement in the standard Arabic, and some of the travelers were impressed and even offer them employment. The passengers were grateful, and react positively to the crew.

Malaysia has seen an increase in the number of travelers from the Middle East. This is especially so the the Western Countries showed resentment to the dress code of the people. With the attack on Iraq and Afghanistan, and the cruel behaviuor of the invading forces, some of the arab choose not to visit Europe any longer.

Singapore Airline is trying to find the correct answer to the question of the Malaysian Air Asia. It is not that SIA has not had any low cost carrier under its fat bottom, it had and still has, the silk air, the tiger airways. It seem obvious that these two airlines are not be able to match airasia.

I think, the creation of the new LCC the singapore scoot is intended to do just that. How different is that from the earlier owned low cost carrier has yet to be discovered. For a start, Scoot is looking for cabin crew with different character, a spirited and big personality. What exactly does it mean, is up to the interpretation of the implementers.

In its recruitment advertisement in singapore, it featured 2 empty circles, trying to be different and hoping to attract applicant with different outlook.

What the Scooters (the employees of scoot) are saying, they are not the typical airline manned by typical people. They must be the extra-ordinary group, probably meant for extra-ordinary travelers. So it also mean, if you are an ordinary person on the street, the new scoot is not for you. You might as well fly with airasia, or MAS, for these airline are meant for the public and making everyone able to fly.

The scoot wants funny people, they say, personality first, pretty second and youth third. Are they imitating Southwest??. Maybe.. what Fernandes was saying when the news of the formation of Scoot was announce.. some people had run out of idea, they resort to copying.

It is not that I am not aware of the processes and the skills required, but, to to fair to the readers, no two companies have exactly the same requirements. A new charter airline in Malaysia, the eaglepress, is in the making. Positions are available including the cabin crew positions.

It is still at the initial stage of filling the critical post. There are a number of post that is necessary to be manned by a qualified persons and approved by the authority . Such post is for positions that effect the safety of the aircraft and the operation such as the chief pilot and quality manager.

There will be vacancies for cabin crews. This is one of the few positions cannot be outsourced to another organisation. Other positions can be given to other organisations. The booking of the tickets can be done easily through the internet, the services of check-in at the airport can be done by the service agents and even the pilotings can be subcontracted.

News: Emirate went to Ireland

The Irish Examiner published the news about the Dubai based airline that came to Ireland to recruit cabin crews. The paper with the title "Airline to recruit 4,000 cabin crew"

In the next 10 days, the airline is coming here in search of 4,000 high flyers. The Dubai-based airline will be holding recruitment days across the country over the next 10 days in the hope of hiring cabin crew.

This is the first Irish route for Emirate. Currently the airline had already employs 232 Irish people, 139 of whom are cabin crew, based in the airline’s home of Dubai.

The airline is planning to recruit a further 4,000 cabin crew. It is always the policy of the airline to recruit from and our policy has always been to recruit staff from countries where there is a strong hospitality tradition and Ireland certain fit the description.

The 4 days effort will give Irish people more opportunity to learn about Emirates and the country of the airline.

The drive to recruit will kick off in Dublin, the capital city of Irish Republic on October 27 at the Central Hotel on Exchequer Street. The it move to Galway on October 30 at the Harbour Hotel on New Dock Road

Many of the young people seeking the job of cabin crew habe been asking if customer service skill is required to secure the job as a cabin crew. My is always... not really. This is based on the fact that most airlines with impressive cabin crew record have never put the stess on Customer service skills.

Airlines such as Singapore or Malaysian Airlines and even Thai, have been known to provide leading cabin services and its crews have been receiving a number of awards. Never were they to mention about the requirement of customers services skills. Their stress have been on training and supervision. However, technically we cannot argue against the fact that.. what the crews are doing at 30,000 feet are in fact customers services.

There are some airlines, in the western region that stress on the customer service experiences as a plus point to be employed. Remember that you will be working in front of the public on a regular basis. From greeting, serving and helping passengers to making announcements, you will always be representing the company in a customer service role. Because it is very important to project a positive image, Many airlines are very careful about choosing candidates who have skill working with the public.

If you had been working to serve customers on regular basis, you are considered to have customer service experience. One of the typical example is, if you work in a restaurant, serving the customers as a waiter or waitress, you are experiencing the customer services. Most people do not even understand that they have a customer service background. The other areas can include working in a retail clothing store, answering telephones in a corporate environment, etc.

However, if you do not have any customer service skill yet, you should not despair. You may have a more hard time than others who do, but it won’t preclude you from landing the flight attendant career, especially if you excel in other qualification areas. For example, the airlines will normally substitute a college education for a lack of customer service skill.

The interview can be the final stage in your journey to become a cabin crew. When you are being called for a individual interview, it mean that you had satisfied the employers requirements for your qualifications and physical attributes. The group interview would weed out the incompetents and people with poor language capability

A. ,Prepare for the interview - Different people will advise on different things. I would suggest that you prepare your self on the following areas:

a. The jobs you are applying. You may use the 4W and 1 H..... what, why, when, who and How, whatever applicable.

b. The brief information about the company, the history, destinations, the companies fleet and destinations. It will help if you have some information about the relevant personnel, example the chairman or the CEO of the company.

You may be required to bring along with you the testimony and certificates. Bring the originals as well as the photostat copy.

B. Handling interview

The interview will involve your listening and speaking skills plus the knowledge or the contents. This will mean that you will need to understand the questions and are able to provide the answer in a logical and comprehensible unit.

The most interviewers will have the ice breaking questions. It is intended to make you settled and remove the tension. Please do not mislead and think that it is important. The opening questions negative marking, that mean if you get it right, there is no mark, but if you get it wrong, you will be penalized.

Some of the examples of the opening questions are:

- How do you know about the vacancy?

- How do you get to this office?

Answer it concisely and straight to the point. Do not offer more than what was asked.

Frequent Questions

a. How do you handle difficult passengers.

This is a very general and open question. You need to give example and explain the situation.

If you can quote your own example, so much the better. You you do not have, then you can give a hypothetical case.

b. Why should we choose you?

Tell them that you like the job. They will also like to know how the company can benefit by having you.

c. Tell me about yourself?

The interviewers are looking for point to check your suitability for the job. Talk about your education and experiences. They also like to know about your personality and preference.
