1887
Sir Frank Bowden purchased an interest in a small bicycle company on Raleigh Street, Nottingham.
Taking its name from the street, the Raleigh Bicycle Company was formed in 1890.
1896
The new Raleigh factory opened and was powered by a phenomenal 16 gas engine.
At the time the factory was the biggest bike manufacturing plant in the entire world.
1918
Sir Frank’s 70th birthday. 2,000 men and women employed by Raleigh celebrated Sir Frank’s birthday, the man who made Raleigh, in the Victoria Hall.
1921
Sir Frank died, and was succeeded by his son Sir Harold Bowden.
Under his leadership the company continued to lead the industry, introducing many further innovations and acquiring other well-known cycle companies such as: Humber, Rudge, BSA and Triumph.
1924
Hugh Gibson covered 3,429 miles around the coast of Britain in less than 12 days on a 7hp Raleigh motorcycle.
1929
Jack Rossiter broke the 21-year-old record for a ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Riding a Raleigh bike he covered the entire distance in a mere 2 days, 13 hours and 22 minutes.
1932
Raleigh takes over the famous Humber Cycles from Nottingham.
1933
Raleigh produced a three wheeler car.
It had a top speed of 55mph, did 60 miles to the gallon and cost £94.50!
1938
Sir Harold Bowden retires from Raleigh after many years of strong leadership and devotion to the company and the world of cycling.
Production had reached a staggering 62,000 cycles a year.
1943
Raleigh bought the Rudge-Whitworth cycle company which dated back to 1869 when Dan Rudge built a ‘boneshaker’ cycle.
So called because they lacked even the most rudimentary shock absorption, their solid tyres transferred the impact on the ground upwards where they would shake their rider.
1951
Raleigh broke through the one million cycles barrier, the production figure hitting the 1,010,077 mark!
1952
The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in November 1952 to open a £1,250,000 extension to Raleigh’s factory space.
It included a bridge between the old and new factories complete with overhead conveyor system.
1957
Raleigh acquired BSA Cycles.
Founded in 1880 by a Mr Otto he demonstrated the merits of his machine by riding it up and down the boardroom in front of the astonished Raleigh directors.
1960
Raleigh Industries merged with TI (Tube Investments) Group.
With this came control of the Phillips, Hercules, Norman and Sun brands, making Raleigh the world’s largest producers of two wheeled personal transport.
1967
The business of Moulton Bicycles was merged with Raleigh.
It brought together the two most dynamic forces in the industry, and it led to the new Raleigh Moulton Bicycle – an alternative to the RSW16.
1970
Birth of a legend with cult status. Raleigh launches the Chopper!
The Chopper with its wedge-shaped frame, large back wheel and small front wheel, and its angular, aggressive-looking seat was an enormous success in Britain and America.
1976
Raleigh launched the Grifter and another cult classic is born.
It was a safe version of a bike which was evolving slowly in America – the BMX machine.
1980
In 1980 , Joop Zoetemelk of Holland riding for TI Raleigh Creda wins the Tour De France in a time of 109 hours, 19 minutes and 14 seconds, beating countryman Hennie Kuiper and Raymond Martin of France.
1982
Raleigh launched its red hot ‘Burner’ BMX range.
Oozing with street cred and a real performer on the track by 1984 it had become the outstanding success story of the company, selling half a million in less than two years.
1985
Raleigh introduced another innovation – the Vektar.
With ‘Star Wars’ styling and ‘Knightrider’ technology including a trip meter and FM radio with presets it becomes a ‘must-have’ for the 80’s cool kids.
1995
In 1995 the MAX range of bikes is launched.
The bikes were advertised on TV as ‘oversized but not overweight’.
The range was a huge success that continues today.
1999
Raleigh acquires the world famous Diamondback Bicycle company.
2001
The Raleigh companies world wide are acquired, by the management, from The Derby Cycle Corporation.

2002

2004
2004 sees the relaunch of the iconic Raleigh Chopper

Union Bank Philippines is doing its best to keep Filipino’s in poverty and people hungry. Remember the story from yesterday Unionbank Philippines Theft it is now 24 hours since that poor woman has been able to eat, because Unionbank Stole her money and will take 15 days to pay it back if they ever pay it back. We still can see no reason why it takes 15 days other banks in the world can sort a problem from a ATM fault like this in a few hours, we can only presume the reason for 15 days is it’s a long enough that many people will forget it, so Union Bank never has to pay it back. This seems to be the case we have had comments left by people who have never got their money back after ATM machines failed to pay out.

While Unionbank does it’s best to keep people hungry and in poverty they also report record profits. Pat yourselfs on your back Union Bank you have record profits because you steal from your customers and keep your country in poverty. Bonnie and Clyde also bragged about the huge amount of money they were making.

Anyway are hearts go to that poor woman and the many we suspect go hungry because of the same type of poor service by Unionbank. I have just spoken to her and she in forms me she has had a little bit to eat but now her cuboard is empty and she does not know when she can eat again. Union bank you must be so proud.

Unionbank Philippines Commits Theft on it's Customers

It seems like Unionbank Philippines thinks it has a right to steal customers money.
As you maybe aware BG Stores has been involved in helping the poor in the Philippines for a few years. One of the things that amazes us is the incompetence of major companies in the Philippines and we feel sure it is one of the main reasons why the country is in poverty.
We have just been informed about just such a case a young woman goes to a ATM machine to withdraw money from her Unionbank account for food, the machine does not pay out but it still deducts the amount from her account, so she reports it to Unionbank only to be informed it will take them between 3 to 15 days to even look into it. In that time the woman goes hungry, what if it was her rent money she was withdrawing and Unionbank takes 15 days to look into it, by that time she has been evicted from her house and living on the streets.
It is theft and there is no doubt about it, they have taken her money and are refusing to let her have it. No one at Unionbank can give a good reason why it takes 15 days. I wonder how many customers this happens to everyday and how much Unionbank makes by withholding customers money. I also suspect because Filipinos are not the type of people that complain a lot many of them just give up and right it of as a loss.
Enough is enough it’s time to take action against companies that steal from the poor, enough is enough of the companies who bad service keeps the Philippines in poverty, we urge you all to withdraw and close your accounts. Lets hit Unionbank where it hurts them Unionbank can not trade without your money and to be honest they should not be trading when they do things like this to the people of the Philippines.

Liverpool-based Littlewoods is the new sponsor of ITV1 soap Emmerdale.
The deal, which was brokered by Carat Sponsorship, runs from 31st August for 2 years.
The home-shopping company, owned by Shop Direct will have multimedia sponsorship rights for the programme and includes ITV1, ITV2 and ITV3, online, interactive, mobile interactive bumpers and licensing.
The final element means it will be able to use cast members for promotional purposes across the Littlewoods catalogue and website.
“We are very happy to have signed this major deal, which continues our association with our heartland audience’s passion for Soaps. It’s scale demonstrates our commitment to reinforcing Littlewoods positioning as a much loved online shopping brand for the family,” said David Inglis, trading director at Shop Direct.
Emmerdale’s previous sponsor Reckitt Benckiser, which has brands including Air Wick and Clearasil, decided not to renew its contract and instead concentrate on online.

N Brown shrugs off customer debt

N Brown, the catalogue and online fashion retailer, indicated yesterday that bad debts among its customers had stabilised and may even have peaked.
The company, whose brands include Oxendales, Simply Be, JD Williams and Ambrose Wilson, admitted that there had been an expected increase in bad debts, but it insisted that it was comfortable with the situation.
Alan White, the chief executive, said: “Because we are both a retailer and a credit provider, we want customers to get out of arrears and back to buying and so we tend to be more amenable than the average credit card company. In terms of arrears, there’s some evidence in recent weeks that they’re bottoming out.

Police get on their bikes for charity

The developer of the £1.5bn flagship shopping centre of the 2012 London Olympic Games has signed up just three retailers out of 300 units less than two years before opening, laying bare the crisis gripping retail property.
Industry sources said a key reason why Westfield Stratford is struggling to attract retailers, who are battling one of the worst downturns in living memory, is that they are "incredibly risk averse" about committing to future schemes. Some believe Westfield will have to offer hefty concessions, such as rent-free periods, or contributions to shopfitting fees to lure retailers through its doors.
However, sources said that the location of Westfield Stratford, in one of the poorest areas of London, and the fact that the shopping centre still resembles a building site, are not helping. Furthermore, observers said that Westfield had alienated some retailers with its decision to increase service charge fees just days after its Westfield London scheme opened near Shepherds Bush last October. In June, Westfield agreed with retailers a net reduction in charges equivalent to about £1.4m when compared to estimates provided around Christmas 2008.

Almost nine out of ten shoppers in the UK now consult the internet before making key purchasing decisions, a new survey has revealed.

Researchers working on behalf of voucher code shopping site NetVoucherCodes.co.uk found a massive 89 per cent of us now use the web to check prices before buying any item likely to cost over £100.

And almost three quarters of us (73%) check online before buying an item likely to cost more than £20.

The bad news for traditional retailers is that books and music are the most popular items bought online with a massive 82% of shoppers saying they bought books online in the past year and 78% buying their music over the web.

Price comparison sites are now used by 86% of all shoppers and more than half of us – 56% - are now using special codes from discount sites such as NetVoucherCodes to make sure we get the best possible bargains.

Yet 32% of those surveyed said they had abandoned some voucher sites in the past because the offers were out of date or the sites were too slow to operate.

Mountain Dew, acquired by Pepsi-Cola in 1964, switches its advertising and package graphics from hillbillies to action-oriented scenes. Sales climb and Mountain Dew will become one of the 10 best-selling soft drinks in the United States.

Home shopping group N Brown said the recent rise in money owed by customers slowed after it adopted a more cautious line on new business.

The firm, which boasts celebrity designers including Gok Wan, reported a slowdown in the rate of debtors growth to eight per cent, down from 13 per cent at the end of its financial year.

It reported a 5.1 per cent rise in group turnover in the 18 weeks to July 4.

Parliament in France has begun debating a law that would allow more shops to open on Sundays.

Most retailers have been banned from trading on Sunday since 1906, when a law enshrined it as a day of rest.

But President Nicolas Sarkozy says the pace of modern life has overtaken tradition, and France has ended up behind the times.

Trade unions and many members of parliament across the political divide have criticised the planned law.

The bill would see the establishment of special tourist areas and commercial zones.

Employees would get double their normal pay for working on a Sunday.

Panasonic Corporation is without a doubt one of the world's largest and most successful electronics companies.

The story of Panasonic Corporation began in Osaka, Japan in 1918, when Konosuke Matsushita invented a two-socket light bulb. He started producing and selling the light bulb from his own house, with just 3 employees. The invention of a new type of bicycle lamp came in 1923, followed by the development of the first radio just 8 years later. In 1935 they launched their first television, an area of production that has since proved immensely successful. 1935 also marked a turning point in the size, production and sheer growth of Panasonic Corporation.

This particular year saw the company manufacturing 600 different kinds of product with sales extending to overseas markets for the first time. Their employee base rose to 3500. By 1942, Matsushita became the first radio manufacturer in Japan. As the swinging sixties approached, the total number of employees had risen to 28000. The company reported profits of 1.5 billion yen.
As Panasonic Corporation grew, Konosuke Matsushita never lost sight of his founding principles - putting the needs of his customers and employees first. He developed his original business Philosophy in 1929, a mission statement that still holds true today -
Panasonic UK was established in 1972.
Since then the company has grown substantially and become a leading supplier of consumer and business related electronics products. Its headquarters is located in Bracknell, Berkshire and this is supported by a national Logistics Centre in Northampton. The company currently employs more than 500 staff and has an annual turnover in excess of £700m.

Power Cut Monks Cross Shopping Park

RETAILERS in York were forced to shut up shop for several hours yesterday after a major power cut hit stores at Monks Cross Shopping Park and more than a thousand homes.
Sainsbury’s supermarket was forced to shut up shop at 4.15pm and reopened at 7.30pm and Marks & Spencer Simply Food closed at around 4.30pm and was hoping to reopen at 9am today.

Pizza Hut was closed for more than an hour and the Aldi supermarket shut for an hour-and-a-half.

A spokeswoman for Asda said the store was only momentarily affected by the outage.

A spokesman for energy company CE Electric, which supplies the area, said power was lost shortly after 4pm and restored by 5.15pm, affecting 1,200 properties in the Huntington and Monks Cross area.
