My thoughts:
Abigail Reynolds is well know for her 'what if' alternate versions of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She takes the beloved characters of Austen and twists and turns the story to shake up their path to love. In Mr. Darcy's Undoing Reynolds picks up the story following Mr. Darcy's disastrous proposal. Elizabeth returns home to Longbourn and realizes that it will fall upon her to make a good marriage to help her family in the event that her father passes away. Elizabeth accepts the offer of a long time friend, Mr. Covington.
Mr. Darcy realizes the mistake he's made in his actions towards Elizabeth and her family. He decides to try to rectify his actions by proving to Elizabeth that he's a changed man. However when he shows up in Herfortshire he realizes that he might lose Elizabeth forever.
Reynolds takes this classic story in a new direction where she covers themes such as jealousy, sacrifice, love, and forgiveness. She also turns up the heat in the sensuality department between Elizabeth and Darcy. Although parts of this novel are a pure delight there are aspects of this book that are slightly lacking. Mr. Darcy has seemed to throw his principles to the wind and give up all his propriety. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's personality did a complete one-eighty. I'm a huge fan of Abigail Reynolds but this book is not my favorite.

My thoughts:

I had read and reviewed Soulless by Gail Carriger previously on this site. Click here to read my review of the book. Even though I loved Soulless I had not continued on with the series right away. Since a year had passed I decided I wanted to 're-read' this book. I downloaded it from audible and was not disappointed.

Emily Gray narrates this fantastic book. She really seem to capture the wit and humor of Alexia Tarabotti. Listening to this novel brought to life the words of Gail Carriger. Gray reads how I imagined Alexia to sound in my head. I especially liked hearing the heated exchanges between Alexia and Lord Maccon read aloud. There are some blush worthy scenes in this book. Gray does a fantastic job with giving each of the characters their own voice. This is definitely one of the best audio books I've come across.

If you've not had the chance to read Soulless yet you need to. It has mystery, romance, werewolves and steampunk. It's a highly enjoyable book.

Interview with Adele Griffin & Lisa Brown, Authors of Picture the Dead

Today I have the pleasure of having Adele Griffin and Lisa Brown authors of Picture the Dead here to answer a few questions. I hope you enjoy this interview:

These are answers from Lisa Brown
1. What inspired you to write about this time period.
LB: It was this amazing show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005: “The Perfect Medium: Photography and the Occult.” It was an exhibition of spirit photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries; that is, photographs of ghosts. The mania for contacting spirits seemed to go hand and hand with the US Civil War: a time where so many people were dying so very far from their homes. It was spooky, and at the same time, emotionally realistic.
AG: Lisa and I had been having a lot of conversations about gothic ghosts, haunts on the moors, ghouls in crumbling estates. And we wanted a visual component—which was specifically inspired, as Lisa notes, by that wonderful MET exhibit on Mumler and Spiritualist photography.

2. Do you believe in ghosts?
LB: I believe that there are things in this world that we don’t understand.
AG: Yes!

3. What books/authors inspired you to become an author?
LB: Edward Gorey has to be number one with a bullet, for me. He was not only an illustrator and a writer, but a world-creator. For this book in particular, however, I went back to the historical fiction and fantasy of my childhood: Elizabeth George Speare (The Witch of Blackbird Pond), Richard Peck, Susan Cooper.
AG: I loved the Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I also wanted to be named Daphne du Maurier so it was a whole identity thing.

4. Do you have any advice for young writers?
LB: Read. A lot. And learn how to read like a writer: not just for fun, but with an eye towards stealing things that will make your own work more interesting.
AG: I’ll second Lisa! Read, read, read. Anything you can get your hands on. Some of my first “real” books were my mother’s pulp novels back in the 70s and I was a hooked—they made a lifelong reader of me.

If you could travel back in time, where/when would you go and why?

New Year’s Day, 1947. My grandmother’s wedding day to my grandfather. She’d been a war widow and my grandfather was the first person who could make her laugh.

5. If you could travel back in time, where/when would you go and why?
LB: I like to think about times of war, they seem so much more intense than peacetime. But that said, I am glad that I never had to live through a war like the Civil War, or either of the World Wars. So I guess I’d like the 1920s, with that peacetime explosion of art and culture. I’d miss antibiotics, though. And the Equal Rights Amendment. The 1880s have an appeal, as well. I’m fond of a corset and a bustle.
AG: New Year’s Day, 1947. My grandmother’s wedding day to my grandfather. She’d been a war widow and my grandfather was the first person who could make her laugh.

6. What are you working on now?
LB: I’m finishing up paintings for a picture book by Lemony Snicket, starting illustrations for a new picture book by author Cathleen Daly, and continuing to work on a graphic novel about conjoined twins in an early 20th century circus sideshow.
AG: I have a novel coming out this October with Knopf called All You Never Wanted, about a pair of sisters whose lives do not end happily ever when their mother remarries a very rich man.

7. What was the hardest part about writing your book?
LB: Having to kill off a favorite character. It turned out to make more sense that this character was dead before the book even began, and that broke my heart. He was such a lovely boy.
AG: We had so many great pieces—characters, plot moments, visuals. Fitting it all together was a challenge. Things were tossed and lost. Like our cute boy, as Lisa notes. R.I.P.

8. What do you do when you're not writing?
LB: When I’m not writing, I’m drawing. When I’m not drawing, I’m reading. When I’m not reading, I’m tweeting and looking at other people’s art online. And at the same time that I’m doing all of the above, I’m drinking coffee.
AG: These days I am often listening to the plot-heavy books straight from the imagination of my four-year-old child. They are very long, with illogical twists and turns. I would not say she has the editing piece yet.

9. What is one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
LB: I was thrilled to find such a wealth of historical information online. Not just history-books type information, but tons and tons of primary sources: photographs, letters, journal entries and newspaper articles. It was like my computer became a time travel portal.
AG: With Picture the Dead, I was surprised by how many Civil War buffs are out there—ready to share. More personally, with both the hardcover and the paperback, the bound book was such a gift. The book was a long time in the making so just that heft of it . . . ah.

10. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
LB: Come on over to our new and improved www.picturethedead.com… pretty soon it will have an interactive component where you can post your own real-life or imagined ghost stories. Boo!

Ace's anger begins to dissipate as she takes matters into her own hands to take down Chloe's philandering husband-and to get to the bottom of a multitude of other scandals plaguing Bugtussle, Mississippi. Then, she starts to realize that maybe Mason deserves a second chance after all.

My thoughts:

Diary of a Mad, Fat Girl by Stephanie McAfee reminded me of a cross between Bridget Jones and Thelma and Louise. This book is set in the small town of Bugtussle, Mississippi. The main character Ace Jones is, as the title suggests, mad. For most of this novel she's mad at the world. Though she does have some reason to be. However she does over react quite a bit in this book. Her personality is over the top. She's loud, outspoken and her behavior is at times very immature. For the most part I did like her but at times I did want to slap her. This book has funny moments but it also has some crude humor which I'm not a fan of.

Ace's relationship with Mason McKenzie is what is holding her back for most of this book. She's in love with Mason. She has been for most of her life but her insecurities about herself and her appearance won't let her be happy.I like that Ace does not look like your average heroine. She's overweight but mostly happy with herself. She has two best friends that have much bigger problems than she has. Her best friend Chloe is in an abusive relationship and won't listen to reason. Her other best friend, Lilly is making some questionable choices of her own which include a mysterious relationship with 'The gentleman'. The way Ace reacts to each of these situations is crazy. Don't get me wrong I really wanted to high five her when it came to Chloe but the way she handled Lilly made me want to throw the book across the room. Ace didn't seem like a very good friend at all.

Overall this is an okay book. It definitely has some fun moments but it's also a bit cliched and stereotypical. The character brought out many emotions in me which is good. For the most part it is an enjoyable read. Although Ace won't be for everyone, this is an enjoyable read.

My thoughts:

Picture the Dead is an unearthly romantic tale set in the civil war era. Jennie lives with her aunt and uncle and is engaged to their son, Will. After Will's death, his brother, Quinn, returns home injured. Quinn is moody and quiet and very reluctant to talk about the trials of war. However what he does tell Jennie disturbs her greatly. The Will that Quinn tells her about is not the Will she knows. Desperate to find the truth Jennie seeks the help of the supernatural. What she uncovers is far worse than she ever imagined.

The story is told from Jennie's point of view. It also contains sections in the book that look like a scrapbook. The pictures in this book have scribbling underneath them expressing Jennie's feelings about that particular picture. This is an unique way to help convey the main character's feeling. Lisa Brown did a fantastic job. This really added to the book. I like that this book takes part during the civil war. The authors combine history with superstition and spins it into this mysterious tale of romance and intrigue. This was an enjoyable read from start to finish. I found myself caught up in the story line eager to uncover the truth with the heroine.

Overall this was a really good read. It is haunting, creepy and eerie. Although there is quite a bit of drama, I think this book would be appropriate for kids twelve and up. It's fairly clean with only a little war time violence. However you might get chills while reading this book.

My thoughts:

The Thorn and the Blossom by Theodora Goss is a unique reading experience. First I need to talk about the book design. The book is spineless. You read that right. The book is put together in a way that makes it able for you to read Brendan's story and Evelyn's story separately. After you finish with either character's story you can flip the book over and begin the other character's story. I like the way this book is designed. It brings something extra to the story. This is the first time that I've read any book in such a way.

As I've mentioned before this is two books in one. One from each characters point of view. The main characters are Brendan and Evelyn. Evelyn has a troubled past and is seeking to make her own way in life. Brendan is looking to start his life away from his father. Evelyn meets Brendan when she walks into his father's book store. They are drawn together as if they were magnets. However things happen that tear them apart but fate keeps throwing them back together.

I like the duel point of view for each book. Even though they are two sides of the same story I like that the author put details in each story that was not in the other character's story. So even though you are reading the same story, it's not all the same. I also like that this story contained legends and mythology. I'm a huge fan of mythology and legends and I think it added a lot to this story.

Overall I did like this book but it didn't wow me. The book design is really interesting and it did add to the story. The book is short so it doesn't go into a lot of detail. I think that it would have been better if this book were a little longer. It's more on the lines of a novella than a full length novel. However this is a sweet story of star crossed lovers. This is an adult book but I think it would be suitable for younger audiences as well. It's a fairly clean read.

My thoughts:

Many people have a love-hate relationship with Charles Dickens. He is one of those authors who used their work as a platform for social change. If you've ever read one of his novels you know where he stood on the social issues facing that time. However he was a very fascinating man. His early life and misfortunes molded him into the author he was to become. So many of his novels reflected his character.

February 7, 2012 was Charles Dickens' Bicentenary. Lucinda Dickens Hawksley and Insight Editions has put out this phenomenal book to commemorate Dickens' life. Lucinda Hawksley is the great, great, great granddaughter of Charles Dickens. She is an expert when it comes to the Dickens'. In this book she collaborated with The Charles Dickens Museum in London. The book is full or photographs, replicas of play bills, news papers, manuscript excerpts, letters and much more. This book is a treasure chest of all things Dickens. This is a book you will read over and over again each time discovering something new.

This book also goes into detail on the people in Dickens' life as well as the influences that inspired his many novels. I truly enjoyed this book and everything it has to offer. I felt like a kid at Christmas time reading this book. This is the perfect book to add to any collection and to be displayed. They say pictures are worth a thousand words so here is a photo of some of the documents found inside this book:

My thoughts:

I love a good historical fiction novel and this definitely qualifies as one. The Turning of Anne Merrick takes place during the American Revolutionary War. Anne Merrick is a widow who has infiltrated the Red coat's camp as she spies for General Washington. Anne and her companion Sally work among the soldiers and their families, desperate to find out any information that might be useful for the Americans. She leaves secret messages so that her love, Jack Hampton will find it and pass the intelligence on to wage their attack.

Anne and Jack have a complicated relationship. They are both spies as well as loyal patriots willing to do what ever it takes to win the war. This often results in long separations. However when they do get together it is so sweet. The author did a wonderful job portraying the hard ships of this time for these two lovers. They were so close at times, yet so far away.

Anne is a great character. She is strong, smart, witty and most important very brave. I also love that the author made her caring and compassionate as well. I also love Sally. Sally says what ever is on her mind and she doesn't let anyone take advantage of her.

The story line to this novel was exciting. I was so nervous for Anne while she was spying. The author kept me on the edge of my seat. This is one of those books that I stayed up late to finish because I couldn't bear to put it down. This is the second book in this series. I did not read the first book but The Turning of Anne Merrick stood on it's own two feet. I don't feel like I missed anything. I would absolutely go back and read the first book, The Tory Widow, because I adored this story so much. This is also a series that I would continue reading as well.

The Turning of Anne Merrick is a story of survival, love, loyalty and hope. It's an up close and personal look inside the war that gave America it's freedom. If you love history, this is a book that you should read.

Up the Rebels!

“We have it in our power to begin the world over again.”

This sentence from Common Sense, by Thomas Paine (one of my favorite revolutionaries) sums it all up for me. It is perhaps ridiculously simplistic – the notion that we always have the ability to change – to begin anew.

I love history, but am particularly drawn to stories involving insurrection, rebellion and revolution. Large or small, joyfully successful or dismally inept, these political cataclysms have all the stuff I look for in a great story.

And spanning time and culture, and for reasons religious, political, or economic, it happens – and often. Revolution. People rising up to say enough is enough. Some lead, others follow, but together they muster the strength to sacrifice and struggle in an effort make their world into a better place. The American Revolution is a prime example.

But not all rebellions end well. History is rife with examples of failed efforts. The Roman slave revolt was eventually squashed. Spartacus was captured and he, plus 6,600 of his followers were crucified on the Appian Way, their bodies left to hang for years as a warning to dissuade budding revolutionaries. Scotland’s Jacobite Rising in 1745 did not restore Bonnie Prince Charlie to the throne. The confederacy of Native American tribes in Pontiac’s Rebellion did not drive the British from their lands, or put a stop to colonial expansion.

Revolution can also create strange dichotomies. The French Revolution propelled by cries of “liberté, égalité, fraternité” devolved into the Reign of Terror. Iconic revolutionary Che Guevera is vilified as “the butcher of La Cabaña” by some, but he is also prayed to as “Saint Ernesto” by others.

And even the revolutions that are deemed successful don’t ever seem to end in perfect solutions. The American Revolution created a radical form of self-governance based on a constitution that left women unable to vote and the slavery issue unresolved.

For all these reasons and many more, revolutions in both the distant and recent past persist as the basis for novels, movies, and even Broadway musicals. Within rebellion there lies a classic David and Goliath quality – the weak making a courageous stand against the mighty. Revolts inherently abound in conflicts where courageous heroes and martyrs face brutal, tyrannical oppressors, creating veritable petri dishes for adventure and romance to grow. Who can resist?

Author Christine Blevins writes what she loves to read – historical adventure stories. The Turning of Anne Merrick is the second in a 3-book series set during the American Revolution, and the companion book to The Tory Widow. My thoughts:

This is a fun book to read. BJ Levine is an average kid until he discovers a mysterious notebook with specific instructions on how to be a 'rock god'. BJ goes forth and tries to follow the path the book sets for him. This road is not an easy one though. He has to overcome his fears, connect with his inner Hendrix and outrun some old leather clad, biker dudes out to get him.

I absolutely loved all the band references in this book also. The author talks a lot about Bon Jovi, which took me on a trip down memory lane. This book has some predictable moments but it's still good. It also has humor, heart, and mystery. If you love rock, adventure and road trips you should definitely check out this book.

My thoughts:

Sellah Katarius is an eighteen year old girl that was sold into slavery by her father. She is strong-willed, beautiful, full of spirit and very brave, however she lives in a time where those characteristics are not valued. The time she lives in is ancient Rome. A time of great works of art, philosophy and also a time a morbid cruelty. Sellah's circumstances will not bring her down. She decides that she can handle anything life throws her way. Including the new Dominus. The Dominus was a rock star chariot driver. Every man wanted to be him. Every woman wanted to sleep with him. Sellah can see two different sides to the Dominus, one side he's compassionate and kind and the other he's a pompous jerk. In this story you can see how he struggles with who he is and who he wants to become and how the world sees him.

He's drawn to Sellah but his pride gets in the way. Dominus puts everything at risk when he makes a wager that could make him lose everything.

Vanity and Valor by R. Lynn is a wonderful read. The story was well written and very exciting at times. The author brought me to the edge of my seat during the chariot race. It left me feeling anxious and breathless. Although some parts of this story made me cringe, the author did a great job with the authenticity of the time period. Vanity and Valor provoked a variety of emotions in me. If you like historical fiction and you're fascinated by ancient Rome, this is a book I would recommend.

My thoughts:

Savannah Colbert is your not so average teen. She lives with her mom and her grandmother, who watch her like a hawk. Most of the kids at her school hate her for no apparent reason. In fact the 'Clann' kids go out of their way to make Savannah's life miserable. However after a mysterious virus takes hold of Savannah, things start to change for her. Not only physically but mentally as well. Unexplained things start to manifest into Savannah's life. She just wants to fit in. She wants to reconnect with her once best friend, Tristan. Tristan is sort of a celebrity in this town. He's being groomed for a prestigious position but he's drawn to Savannah. Their relationship is forbidden which makes their attraction so much harder for both of them.

Crave by Melissa Darnell is a novel that delves into the paranormal and mystical intrigues of a small town run by a mysterious Clann. Savannah and her mom have been on the wrong side of the Clann for unknown reasons. Savannah's father has not been very supportive or present in her life for years. Anger and resentment toward these people have haunted her for years. Darnell reveals a glimpse of the mysteries a little at a time. This keeps the reader interested and invested in Savannah's life. Although this is a good story it is predictable at times. The author explores Savannah's insecurities, immaturity, and vulnerability at a good pace. I did appreciate the growth of Savannah's character throughout the novel.

Overall this is a novel that is hugely entertaining. It has everything from family drama to star crossed lovers. It is endearing and funny and definitely worth it to read.

I have two books to tease you with this week. The first is In the Lion's Den by Michael Flynn. It's a space opera which is a newer genre for me.

"He had great fun, the scarred man did. Opening my locks, Poisoning my food. Throwing metal slugs at my head. Planning my ambush and death. What more fun may a man have and live afterward?" ~pg. 57~

It's more than a few sentences but I thought I needed to include the whole thing. The second book is Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. This book will probably take me awhile to get through mostly because there are zombies in this novel and zombies scare the #% #$% out of me but I've heard great things about this series so I'm going to give it a go.

"This is the way the world ends-not with a bank or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door." ~first sentence in the book~ This is one of the best opening lines to a book that I've read.

My thoughts:
Descended by Blood by Angeline Kace is the first book in the Vampire Born series. The main character Brooke Keller has moved around most of her life. She lives with her mom who is very protective over her. She finally has a best friend, Kaitlynn and a hot boyfriend, Jaren. Things are going very well for Brooke until she notices that she's being followed and possibly stalked by a creepy stranger. When the creeper tries to kidnap Brooke in front of Jaren a mystery reveals itself. Brooke exhibits special powers that she can't explain. Frightened and worried Brooke goes on the run with Jared and Kaitlynn only to find that whoever is after her is not far behind.
Descended by Blood has an very interesting, action packed plot. This story line includes a love triangle between Jaren, Brooke, Mirko who is the guy sent to protect her. The author has set up a great back story to the history of vamps as well. I also like the depth Kace gives her characters. It really helped to understand the characters and their actions better. One thing that bothers me in books is instant love. I felt that Brooke and Jarens relationship was a bit rushed. Kace explains in her novel that vampires form attachments very quickly so I could understand why it happened so quickly but it still doesn't work for me. Mirko and Brooke's relationship is more my speed. Mirko is immediately attracted to Brooke but there are no instant confessions of love.
Another thing I really like in this book is the characters reactions to their situations. It's good and refreshing to see characters not always have such a positive view and to be so accepting of life changing events. To me that seems like a normal reaction. For instance Brooke is mad at her mother for the secrets she kept from her her whole life. I like that some characters can go with the flow but it's also nice to see characters having trouble dealing with situations.
Overall this is a good book to read. It's very fast paced and exciting. I definitely want to continue reading this series especially since it ended with a cliff hanger. The next book, Enemy Within, comes out this year.

Last year I discovered that my uncle John had been an international arms dealer. He was found dead on a flight from Amsterdam in ’84, his throat cut. The police had been waiting for him at Heathrow, in connection with the theft of munitions from the British army. No one in the family had ever told me this. Never.

Many rumours surrounded his death. His wife claimed that he’d been involved in some sort of under-cover work, and elsewhere a security report suggested that he had been supplying Irish terrorist groups. But he was dead, and these links were never proved, although the stolen munitions were indeed found at his premises.

It’s not such a great thing to find out that there was a criminal in your family. However, as a novelist what interested me about this case was that his activities were never mentioned in the family. He was an official, registered arms dealer by trade, but even that was never mentioned. He had two young children and lived in a nice suburb of Leeds, in the north of England. He had, to any observer, a normal life. Yet he was not an ordinary man. He was a criminal.

I’d been thinking about writing a crime novel for some time. I had an idea for a plot involving counterfeit money, but it wasn’t coming together. When I learned about my uncle, it got me thinking about families and what happens when there’s a criminal in them. In crime fiction the criminals are often nasty, violent thugs, or devious criminal masterminds. We tend to think about crime like that, all black and white. But in my own family, this wasn’t the case. I wanted to take a closer look at the human angle of criminal families.

In Hope Road, the main character is the son of a career criminal. He’s called John Ray and he grew up surrounded by crime, but had decided to go ‘straight’. As the book opens he is running a successful automobile business, and as if to complete the legitimate, law-abiding nature of his life, his girlfriend is a young police detective. But then he becomes involved in a murder investigation, and things begin to unravel.

I love crime novels. I love following the clues, weighing up the evidence as the truth behind the crime is slowly revealed to us. But that idea about families kept coming back to me. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that what I wanted to write was a novel about deception. Personally, I’ve never been involved in crime, but I think it’s fair to say that at the heart of all crime is the need to conceal it. Crime is shameful, transgressive, morally repellent. I wanted to put a character in the position of having to deal with these feelings from the inside.

Most people reading this blog will be good, up-standing members of the community. But are there situations in which you might turn to crime? And if so, how would that make you feel? What about those around you, the people you love, and who love you? Extreme circumstances effect people in strange ways, and the great thing about being a novelist is that you can explore these effects in depth. I know what it’s like to have secrets in the family, secrets that nobody wants to talk about. With this book, I have tried to talk about them.

Hope Road is a novel about a criminal family. It asks why our relationship to crime is so complex, why we are repelled but sometimes also drawn to crime. Have you ever thought about a crime and how you might carry it out? What about if you had the opportunity? What if you had no choice? Who knows. But what is clear is that crime affects people and their relationships, be they family, lovers, friends... Crime forces us to deceive those who love us the most. And that’s what Hope Road is about.

About the author:

John Barlow was born in Leeds, England in 1967. He studied English Literature at Cambridge University and worked as a university teacher before becoming a full-time writer in 2004.
