Asteroid 2024 YR4 was identified 2 days after it went by back in December of 2024 and now we think it might, possibly, hit the Moon in December of 2032.

The Potential Danger to Satellites due to Ejecta from a 2032 Lunar Impact by Asteroid 2024 YR4

On 2032 December 22 the 60m diameter asteroid 2024 YR4 has a 4% chance of impacting the Moon. Such an impact would release 6.5 MT TNT equivalent energy and produce a∼ 1 km diameter crater. We estimate that up to 108 kg of lunar material could be liberated in such an impact by exceeding lunar escape speed. Depending on the actual impact location on the Moon as much as 10% of this material may accrete to the Earth on timescales of a few days. The lunar ejecta-associated particle fluence at 0.1 - 10 mm sizes could produce upwards of years to of order a decade of equivalent background meteoroid impact exposure to satellites in near-Earth space late in 2032. Our results demonstrate that planetary defense considerations should be more broadly extended to cis-lunar space and not confined solely to near-Earth space.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope recently turned its watchful eye toward asteroid 2024 YR4, which we now know poses no significant threat to Earth in 2032 and beyond.

We spoke with Andy Rivkin of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the principal investigator of the Webb Director’s Discretionary Time program used to study the asteroid’s characteristics from the observations.

What is important for people to know about these Webb observations?

While earlier in the year asteroid 2024 YR4 posed a potential future impact threat to Earth in 2032, by the end of February, NASA announced the risk of Earth impact had been significantly lowered to near-zero. Nevertheless, we are interested in using the observatory to measure its properties to understand what asteroids of this size are like to help inform the hazard they could pose to Earth. This is the smallest object targeted by the mission to date, and one of the smallest objects to have its size directly measured.

2024 YR₄ is an asteroid with an estimated diameter of 53 to 67 metres (174 to 220 ft)^[7] that is classified as an Apollo-type(Earth-crossing) near-Earth object. From 27 January to 20 February 2025, it had an impact rating of 3 on the Torino scale, reflecting its size and an estimated probability greater than 1% that it would impact Earth on 22 December 2032. The asteroid was discovered by the Chilean station of the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) at Río Hurtado on 27 December 2024.^[1]^[2]When additional observations increased its impact probability to greater than 1%, the first step in planetary defense responses was triggered, prompting additional data gathering using several major telescopes and leading United Nations–endorsed space agencies to begin planning asteroid threat mitigation.

The asteroid made a close approach to Earth at a distance of 828,800 kilometres (515,000 miles; 2.156 lunar distances) on 25 December 2024, two days before its discovery, and it will be moving away from the Sun until November 2026. Its next close approach will take place on 17 December 2028.^[3] Analysis of spectral and photometric time series suggests that 2024 YR₄ is a stony S-type (most likely), L-type or K-type asteroid, with a rotation period of approximately 19.5 minutes.^[11] A number of known asteroids, including other virtual impactors,^[c] follow orbits somewhat consistent with that of 2024 YR₄.^[17]

MOON SHOT

Ted Anthony wrote about his recollection of his father taking a picture of a TV image of mankind on the Moon.

I too have a recollection of taking a picture of our first step on the Moon with my Polaroid camera and waiting in anticipation for the film to develop itself.

Now much older I say thanks to Ted for helping me remember.

Darkness. Darkness all around. That’s what the lens captured. On the edges: a thick white photographic border that shouts early 1970s. Moving toward the middle, inky black ebbs into greenish gray and, finally, into a tableau captured in a ghostly bluish-white.

In it, you can make out a figure and beyond it, some machinery and a coarse, remote landscape, viewed as if through a rudimentary pinhole camera. Some horizontal lines, barely perceptible, suggest this may not be an image in itself but an image of an image, viewed through some kind of vacuum-tube alchemy. Something is out there, but we’re not certain what. H.G. Wells comes to mind — a collision of the modern and the ancient, of the sterile and the visceral, the as-yet-unnamed aesthetic of steampunk. The world seen through a glass, darkly.

It is not a very good photograph, at least in the way that we tend to judge such things. But it is an important one. It shows how detached and gossamer we human beings really are. It shows us as we embark upon a journey to become a society of watchers, separated by multiple layers of reality from the events that shape us.

And it shows that, in a manner of speaking, the camera that captured my childhood also went to the moon.

One forgotten day between 1969 and 1972, my father, approaching the end of his fifth decade on the third planet, raised his Polaroid Land Camera Automatic 230, pushed the red button in the top right corner and made a photograph.

A second or two afterward, he yanked it from the contraption by hand — a single piece of peel-away Polacolor pack film that required a minute’s wait before you pulled it apart to expose the quickly coalescing image.

Not to be left behind, the United States sent its first man into space in less than a month—Alan Shepard on May 5—thus sparking the famous space race between the two Cold War superpowers. December 1968 saw the launch of Apollo 8, the first manned space mission to orbit the Moon, and about seven months later Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the historic Moon landing on July *20, 1969.

But everyone knows all this, and that’s not the story.

What many don’t know is that super hack Tintin was way ahead of both the superpowers in flying to space as well as landing on Moon. Yes, we are talking about the Belgian boy with a tuft of ginger hair.

To all of you that date back to the BYTE Magazine, Viktor Toth just passed this bit of sad news, "Jerry Pournelle, the noted science-fiction writer, political pundit and early computer enthusiast, is dead at the age of 84."

Pournelle was a long-time collaborator of science-fiction giant Larry Niven, with whom they co-wrote some amazing science-fiction novels, like The Mote in God’s Eye or Oath of Fealty, not to mention their take on Dante’s Divine Comedy, Inferno, and its sequel, Escape from Hell. Novels he published under his own name included the memorable Janissaries or West of Honor.

Pournelle was well known to readers of the once legendary BYTE magazine. His Chaos Manor column, in which he reviewed software, hardware, new technologies, was very popular

“This was done on a 3D printer table, to bake successive 0.1 mm layers of moondust at 1000°C. We can complete a 20 x 10 x 3 cm brick for building in around five hours.”

Whether we go to Mars or the Moon, if we expect to build up a base it will be to our advantage to be able to use the materials we find there.

Even if we use the initial lander or sent ahead containers, there will be a need to provide additional material to provide shielding, especially if there is no atmosphere to slow down cosmic rays.

Flexural strength of the compact is not only determined by the compaction pressure but also significantly influenced by the lateral boundary condition of processing loading. The compression loading can be applied either quasi-statically or through impact. Nanoparticulate iron oxide (npOx), commonly detected in Martian regolith, is identified as the bonding agent. Gas permeability of compacted samples was measured to be on the order of 10⁻¹⁶ m², close to that of solid rocks. The compaction procedure is adaptive to additive manufacturing.

The lunar soil simulant is strongly bonded by the interphase through a two-staged heating and mixing process, forming a multiscale structure with the characteristic lengths ranging from nanometer level to sub-millimeter level. This technique has great potential in developing high-performance space infrastructural materials using locally harvestable resources. A complete report has been published elsewhere.[1]

I haven't seen whether just impacting Lunar soil (regolith) will make nice bricks.

I have a stack of books that discuss what might go into making a Lunar base.

It looks like I need to do a lot of re-reading and then see if we are doing more actual testing. Hopefully that will be the case as others are now talking more about going to the Moon with landers.

Send in the robots and let's see if they can make some Lego Bricks that can be stacked neatly into structures.

In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) of lunar materials for the establishment of an extra-terrestrial human base or settlement will involve guarding against, as well as utilizing, the ever-present, clinging, penetrating, abrasive, resource-rich, fine-grained lunar dust. 1) abrasiveness, with regards to friction-bearing surfaces;

2) pervasive nature as coatings, on seals, gaskets, optical lens, windows, etc.,

4) physiological effects on the tissue in human lungs.

The chemical and physical properties of the fine fraction of lunar soil is at the root of the unusual properties of the dust that contribute to its deleterious effects – its “liability". Recent discoveries of the unique magnetic properties of lunar mare and highland soils by the senior author’s Tennessee group have led to suggested solutions to the liability of the lunar dust. The soil fragments and dust grains contain myriads of adhering nano-sized (3-30 nm) Fe0 particles, iron in its elemental form, concentrated especially in the fine, dusty fraction. The presence of this ferromagnetic Fe0 on and in almost every grain of the fine dust-sized particles imparts an unusually high magnetic susceptibility to the particles, such that they are easily captures by a magnet. Furthermore, the presence of these nanophase Fe0 grains imparts an unusual property to the soil for microwave energy. The microwaves couple strongly with the Fe0 to such a degree that a sample of Apollo soil placed in an ordinary 2.45 MHz kitchen microwave will literally begin to melt before your tea-water boils. Further considerations of the properties of the fine soil are the basis for the microwave sintering/melting, hot-pressing, and extrusion of the soil to form various construction materials, in order to realize some of the "assets" of the soil

Looking for ways to make it easy to assist in propagating the MEME: = THE MOON IS OUR NEXT INHABITED PLANET.

NASA has over the years done more to put their face in front of the general public.

Back when the Lunar Prospector mission was being set up the project was asked to find a way for the general public to get a feel for what was going on during real time while Lunar Prospector was orbiting the Moon. They set up a Lunar Prospector web site and I got to adapt some of their programs to let me send data to the web site display applets through a back door. These displays updated just 5 minutes after the live data was received. Much quicker than waiting a couple of years for the scientists papers to come out. :-)

Since then NASA in general has done much more to provide access to mission information. Mars gets a lot of coverage.

Using YouTube's 360 video feature you can look in any direction and those using headsets can experience the view from 400 km above Earth floating next to the most complicated piece of machinery ever made.

Moon 101 - A Course in Lunar Science for non-specialists

Back in 2010 I looked at the Moon 101 Lecture Series that was given in 2008.

It is a very good starting point to look at the Moon and as mentioned in the lecture, we now have additional data from the more recent missions that build on what was said here.

Introduction to the Moon

In the first presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Paul Spudis gives an introduction to the Moon, providing an overview of the more detailed Moon 101 lectures to follow. The presentation begins by describing the nature of the Moon as a heavily cratered rocky planet, and compares the general properties of the Moon to those of the Earth and Mars. Global images and elemental composition maps are then followed by discussions of: the thermal and micrometeorite environments on the lunar surface; the Moon's orbit and resulting eclipses and lunar librations as viewed from Earth; surface topography; moment of inertia; surface morphology and physiography; landscapes and terrains; the surface lighting environment; regolith and dust; and the origin of the Moon. The presentation concludes with a review of past and current robotic exploration missions to the Moon.

The Lunar Environment

Dr. Mendell's presentation addresses a multitude of aspects of the Lunar Environment. The first section reviews the many external factors that act upon the Moon and how their effects that need to be understood by the lunar designer or explorer. He chooses to discuss the environmental factors through their connection to the Moon's location in the universe, in the Milky Way Galaxy, in our solar system near the Sun, and in proximity to the Earth. The effects of the solar wind plasma, meteoroids, and solar insolation are important on the Moon because it lacks a magnetic field and a substantial atmosphere. He describes the Earth-Moon system as a “binary planet” and discusses the Lunar Coordinate System and the importance of the Moon’s polar regions. The second part of Dr. Mendell's presentation covers the implications of the environment for living and working on the Moon. We have little to no experience in habitat design for a low-gravity planet. The Moon's 'lumpy' structure introduces irregularities in its gravitational field, increasing the cost of maintaining low orbits. He goes on to discuss the Moon's tenuous atmosphere, its unusual surface reflectivity, ejecta from surface impacts (why we need to worry about this), lunar seismic events (moonquakes, impact events – even ours), and lastly emanations of gases from beneath the surface.

Dr. Paul Spudis discusses the physiography and geology of the moon including: terrains, landforms, topography (photogeology), impact crater formation, excavation, ejecta emplacement, secondaries, impact melting and shock metamorphism, lunar meteorites, flux through time; cataclysm, periodicity, correlation with terrestrial record and other planets.

The Lunar Crust

Dr. Gary Lofgren discusses the current understanding of the crust of the Moon. The presentation begins with a brief overview of the Moon's surface, and discusses the prevailing Magma Ocean Theory resulting in the formation of the primary, or original, lunar crust. The crust was subsequently modified by impact bombardment and volcanic activity. Compositional variations in the lunar crust are then described as three major terrains: Procellarum KREEP terrain, Feldspathic Highlands terrain, and the South Pole-Aitken basin terrain. It is noted that studying rock samples is the key to understanding the lunar crust. The presentation then focuses on the characteristics and ages of the major rock types found on the Moon: basaltic rocks from mare lava flows, anorthositic rocks in the lunar highlands, impact breccias and melt rocks, and volcanic glasses. The lecture concludes with a brief review of the rock sampling conducted during the Apollo missions, and lessons learned for future lunar surface exploration.

The Lunar Interior

In the sixth presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Jeff Plescia discusses the current understanding of the interior of the Moon. The presentation begins with a brief overview of the Moon from a geophysical perspective, and discusses the prevailing Giant impact Theory and Magma Ocean Theory resulting in the formation of the Moon and its differentiation into crust, mantle, and core. The presentation then focuses on the current understanding of the chemistry, mineralogy, and thickness of the lunar crust; the boundaries, depth, and mineralogy of the mantle; and the size and composition of the lunar core. Geophysical parameters of the Moon are then discussed, including: the seismic nature of the Moon, including shallow, deep, and thermal moonquakes and impact events; the lunar gravity field; magnetism; and heat flow.

The Lunar Polar Environment

In the seventh presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Ben Bussey discusses the current understanding of the polar regions of the Moon. The presentation begins with a brief overview of the geometry of the Moon's axis of rotation with respect to the ecliptic plane, the resulting polar environment on the lunar surface, and the proposition that a polar region, particularly the south pole, would be a good location for a lunar outpost. Using imagery data from the Clementine and SMART-1 missions, the majority of the presentation focuses on how local topography at the poles result in two specific areas of interest: permanently shadowed craters possibly containing water ice, and topographically high areas that receive enhanced illumination from sunlight due to their elevated position with respect to the surrounding terrain. The presentation concludes with discussions about how radar instruments on the Chandrayaan-1 and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

A Brief, Selective History of the Apollo Program

In the eighth presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Dean Eppler provides a brief and selective history of the Apollo program. The presentation begins with President Kennedy's message to Congress on National Priorities in May of 1961, and his desire to commit the nation to the exploration of the Moon. The presentation then focuses on several key efforts that made the Apollo program successful, including national will, money, heavy lift launch vehicles, lunar landers, space suits, operational practices, and luck. An overview of each Apollo mission to the Moon then follows, including mission facts and statistics, results, and lessons learned. The presentation concludes with discussions on how the Constellation Program could use the lessons learned from Apollo to benefit the future explorations of the Moon.

Future Scientific Exploration of the Moon

In the ninth presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Paul Spudis discusses current ideas for the future exploration of and operations on the Moon. The presentation begins with a brief overview of why the Moon is important and the value of exploration, particularly human spaceflight. Points of discussion included using the Moon as a school for exploration, a place to learn how to live and work off planet, and a stepping stone to the Solar System. The presentation then focuses on how geological exploration is conducted, including reconnaissance and field work, field and lab analyses, mapping, and planning surveys, traverses, and transects. The importance of surface mobility to accomplish these tasks, and the proper mix and use of humans and robots are highlighted. Lunar Meteorites

In the tenth presentation of the Moon 101 lecture series, Dr. Kevin Righter discusses lunar meteorites and how they have contributed to lunar science. The presentation begins with a brief overview describing what meteorites are and what they look like. Discussion then continues with where meteorites come from, and how lunar meteorites can be recognized from other meteorites. The presentation then focuses on NASA's involvement with the U.S. Antarctic meteorite program, and the curation of collected meteorites, including the tools and materials used. Other locations where meteorites have been collected, such as Africa, are also mentioned. The presentation concludes with discussions about how the study of lunar meteorites has contributed to the advancement of lunar science, including extending the range of ages for the eruption of basaltic lavas, refining the composition of the feldspathic highlands crust, and providing more data to better understand the impact flux at Moon.

Site Selection for Lunar Industrialization, Economic Development, and Settlement

Introduction

The subject of a lunar landing site/outpost/base has been explored extensively. Due to the cost and complexity involved, until now this has been almost the exclusive domain of government. In the United States we have gone through at least three generations of work in this area since the Apollo era. The vast majority of these plans and projects have been science driven, and scientific priorities have governed site selection and architecture. The general purpose here is to develop something fundamentally different. The general question to be investigated is; what would a non- governmental lunar development look like, premised upon economic development, industrialization and settlement? The specific purpose here is to zero in on a location so that further development and cost estimation can begin soon.

The question of lunar development and its importance was discussed in an exceptional activity at a major Silicon Valley venture capital office in August of 2014. Over 40 participants, most of whom have spent their careers in engineering, the sciences, and finance, were gathered to discuss the subject of what would a privately financed installation, to the tune of $5 billion dollars, to be operational by the end of the year 2022 look like? The 2022 project milestone would be a permanently inhabited installation that would initially house at least ten people on extended tours. Discussions were held about cost, implementation, economic activity, and so forth and it was encouraging to see how quickly, with the parameters enumerated, the various participants came to a consensus on the path forward. This missive will discuss site selection within the larger context of the overall project goal.

Humans LIVING on the Moon by --- Aaah that is the question. since I am 79 and thought we would be doing more with the Apollo missions, more after the Lunar Prospector mission found indications of water at the Lunar poles, or more after the later orbiters having looked down at the Moon with more and more information about the potential for benefiting from Lunar resources.

AS Nasa hopes to be the first to put a man on Mars, the European Space Agency (ESA) has altogether different ambitions, saying that it wants to colonise the Moon.

The ESA says that it wants to set up a lunar base by 2030, but in the decade prior to this, it will send astronauts back and forth for testing.

However, it said in a statement that it won’t be competing with Nasa, which has previously stated that it wants to colonise the planet, but envisions “international cooperation and commercial participation.”

It is widely regarded as one of the greatest human achievements ever made, but putting a man on the moon was no cheap undertaking.

The Apollo missions to send just 12 men onto the dusty lunar surface cost £25 billion (£17 billion) – estimated to be worth around $170 billion (£120 billion) in modern monetary value.

But it appears we may be able to send humans back to our rocky satellite and set up a permanent base where they could live for just a fraction of the cost.

So said the opening line of a brochure for a workshop that took place in August 2014. It was a meeting of some of the greatest scientists and professionals in the space business and beyond, including gene editing maverick George Church and Peter Diamandis from the XPrize Foundation. The workshop's goal: to explore and develop low-cost options for building a human settlement on the moon.

The hard part seems to be getting back with real feet on the ground. I hope we can come up with a long term plan to incrementally build a working economy with our nearest neighbor.

Up to speed and thinking about the future, United Launch Alliance (ULA), the amalgam of Boeing and Lockheed created in 2006 to market launch services on the venerable Delta and Atlas rockets, hosted a unique gathering in Centennial, Colorado last week. Approximately 70 invited engineers, scientists and space entrepreneurs gathered at ULA corporate headquarters to consider the pathways and connections of future activities envisioned for cislunar space (the volume of space between and around Earth and the Moon). Working from ULA’s concept of 1000 people working in cislunar space within the next 30 years, we were tasked to consider and work out what these people will do and how the ULA Cislunar 1000 vision will come to pass. We need to be careful here. If we say CONTROL, then we might be thinking military action. Would that turn the topic into some "BLACK OP". and lock everything away behind a cloud of secrecy? China has made progress in going to the Moon, both with orbiters and lander. If you look at what they accomplished with Chang'e 2 you will find that they orbited the Moon and fully mapped it and went to Sun-Earth L2 and loitered there before going off to an asteroid. Planetary scientist Dr. Paul Spudis of the Lunar and Planetary Institute presents his argument for returning humans to the Moon before reaching for Mars and other destinations. Spudis explores three reasons for returning to the Moon: It is close, it is interesting, and it is useful. He argues the Moon is a logical base for further space exploration and possibly a future home for humanity. This was the first presentation in the Lunar and Planetary Institute’s 2016–2017 Cosmic Exploration Speaker Series — Mercury to Mars: LPI Explores the Solar System.

The aim of this presentation is to define the basic reasons, means and timescale for the establishment of a permanent, manned lunar settlement. · the Planetary Society
· all Moon-related Societies (such as the Artemis Society)
· every single Lunar and Planetary scientist and

So I woke up this morning and it is April 15, 2017 and we aren't building on the Moon, YET. :-)

I am looking for more recent articles and I see that authors are still publishing and providing the WHAT is needed. Not so sure on the WHEN it will happen and that is why I think we need ways to unleash the "MEME" = THE MOON IS OUR NEXT INHABITED PLANET,

Paul Spudis of "The Once and Future MOON" has a blog that emphasis going to the Moon first and NOT Mars, to the point that some say is repetitious and one sided. His newer books are sometimes reviewed with that view as well. That said, I think there are good points covered so here is the link to the blog and a YouTube presentation that is very clear and informative. Have a look see.

The Planet Moon Project

Back in November of 2003 David Schrunk sent me a copy of a paper suggesting that when we go back to the Moon we should look at the south pole region of the Moon, up high, on a mountain ,where it would be possible to see back to Earth as well as get energy from the Sun almost continuously.

We haven't made it back yet but the dream is still strong and ideas continue to develop.

Abstract

The resources of mankind are now sufficiently advanced to support the global human exploration and development of the Moon. This paper discusses the "Planet Moon Project", which portrays a vision to transform the Moon into an inhabited sister planet of the Earth in the 21st century. Beginning with small-scale, teleoperated in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) projects, electric power, communication, and transportation networks will be manufactured from lunar resources. These infrastructure networks will be field-tested and commissioned in the south polar region of the Moon, and permanent human outposts will then be established. Through several phases of development, the utility networks will grow, and the number of permanently inhabited bases will increase to include all areas of interest on the Moon. Return to the Surface of the Moon

The ASAN instrument will mark the return of Swedish built scientific instruments to the lunar surface after the famous Hasselblad cameras used during the Apollo missions.

Ongoing Science

The ASAN instrument will allow a continuation of the very successful research initiated with the participation in the Indian Chandrayaan-1 mission with the SARA instrument. A wide range of ground breaking discoveries about the interaction of the solar wind with the lunar surface were made, including the first image of a mini-magnetosphere on the Moon. Many of the open questions raised by SARA measurements made from orbit, will find an answer with ground truth data obtained by the ASAN instrument.

Absolutely mind-blowing video shot from the Space Shuttle during launch

Happy New Year, and no the Space Shuttle has not been reactivated.

Tice DeYoung received an email from a friend and thought I might like to view the link to the High Definition view from the Space Shuttle booster.during launch.

I think you all might enjoy seeing again even if you saw it when it was originally posted.back in March of 2012 (8:31 min:sec)

Either one will take some time to watch. That said, I enjoyed looking at the photography and remembering those that worked on making it possible to build the ISS.

The commentary about the many cameras was very informative. High speed photography gives you a great view of action otherwise gone in a blink of the eye.

Let me also include a few links to a revised version of David Bowie's Space Oddity, recorded by Commander Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station.

Also a link to Chris giving a TED Talk about going blind during a space walk. He ends with playing the Space Oddity song again.

David Bowie passed away at 69, this January 10, 2016.

Drop whatever you're doing and watch this. NASA has released videos shot from onboard the Space Shuttle's Solid Rocket Boosters in the past, but you've never seen one prepared as masterfully as this.

For one thing, the footage was shot in high definition, so the image is exceptionally clear. But what puts this video head and shoulders above most other rocketcams is the sound. The audio has been remastered by the folks over at Skywalker Sound (yes, that Skywalker Sound), and the final product is nothing short of incredible.

Michael Interbartolo — who used to work on the Shuttle Program at Mission Control in Houston — had this to say about the video when he posted it to Google+ earlier this morning:

Turn up your speakers and take a wild ride on a Shuttle solid rocket booster

On Google+, Michael Interbartolo — who worked for ten years on the Space Shuttle Program in Mission Control in Houston — just posted about this amazing video from cameras mounted on the Shuttle solid rockets as they rode into space. We’ve seen videos from rocketcams before, but this is very clear, and has enhanced sound that’ll rock your speakers:

There’s a lot to see here! The ascent is very cool, of course, and at two minutes the solid rocket boosters (or SRBs) separate from the external tank and Orbiter. As they tumble away we see the Earth spinning around, and several times you can see the plume from the launch in the view poking up from the surface into the sky. You can also see the bright "star" of the Orbiter as it continues on into space — the SRBs only burn for about two minutes, and are used as an assist to boost the Orbiter above the atmosphere. Once the SRBs drop away, the Orbiter burns liquid fuel from the orange external tank until it has enough speed to attain orbit.

The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound. The Skywalker sound folks just helped bring it out and make it more audible.

This subject was noted on my Facebook account and I see that it dates back to 2012 - 2013 time frame so did some looking to see if it was still a topic of interest.

What is mentioned is not quite a Star Trek Replicator but rather a 3D printer that can build up a food product like a pizza.

Why bother with parts of an animal you don't want to eat, just grow the part of a chicken you want to eat.

The audacious plan to end hunger with 3-D printed food

Anjan Contractor’s 3D food printer might evoke visions of the“replicator” popularized in Star Trek, from which Captain Picard was constantly interrupting himself to order tea. And indeed Contractor’s company, Systems & Materials Research Corporation, just got a six month, $125,000 grant from NASA to create a prototype of his universal food synthesizer.

But Contractor, a mechanical engineer with a background in 3D printing, envisions a much more mundane—and ultimately more important—use for the technology. He sees a day when every kitchen has a 3D printer, and the earth’s 12 billion people feed themselves customized, nutritionally-appropriate meals synthesized one layer at a time, from cartridges of powder and oils they buy at the corner grocery store. Contractor’s vision would mean the end of food waste, because the powder his system will use is shelf-stable for up to 30 years, so that each cartridge, whether it contains sugars, complex carbohydrates, protein or some other basic building block, would be fully exhausted before being returned to the store.

3D Printing: Food in Space

NASA and a Texas company are exploring the possibility of using a "3D printer" on deep space missions in a way where the "D" would stand for dining.

NASA has awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Systems and Materials Research Consultancy of Austin, Texas to study the feasibility of using additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing, for making food in space. Systems and Materials Research Consultancy will conduct a study for the development of a 3D printed food system for long duration space missions. Phase I SBIR proposals are very early stage concepts that may or may not mature into actual systems. This food printing technology may result in a phase II study, which still will be several years from being tested on an actual space flight.

Future long duration space missions beyond low Earth orbit have unique challenges for food quality, variety, and nutrient stability. Current astronaut nutrition is exclusively meal-ready-to-eat (MRE) pouches, which do not provide flavor and texture variety or long term nutrient stability. There exists a need for a new food technology system that provides interesting flavors and recipes while including nutrient supplements to offset nutritional degradation from long term storage.

SMRC’s 3D printed food system will provide nutritious food choices in a variety of forms and flavors. In a Mars mission, this system is to be used in conjunction with bulk foods, prepackaged foods, and hydroponically grown foods. Potentially, hundreds of recipes are available, utilizing raw ingredient food stocks. An additional value added product of this system is the possibility of therapeutic diets. The probability that one or more astronauts will be injured or fall ill is high. Special therapeutic diets can be programmed at NASA headquarters and transmitted to the spacecraft. SMRC’s food dispensing system will be an adaptable food supply for individual tastes and nutrition needs.

SMRC has developed a 3D printed food system capable of dispensing viscous food made from powder and liquid ingredients. Cheese pizza has been the first demonstrated meal from SMRC’s 3D food printer. Pizza dough is dispensed onto a hot plate where it is cooked, followed by a tomato layer and cheese topping. Future developments of the 3D printer will include an oven for cooking the food. Nutrient addition to meals is a future add-on to the 3D printed food system.

Just as the name implies, 3D Systems insists ChefJet will allow any professional kitchen to incorporate "stunning edible prints" with minimal effort -- that is, for foodies willing to fork out some serious dough.

ChefJet will be available later this year in two models: one at "under $5,000" to deliver single-color edible prints, and another "Pro" version for "under $10,000" to enable larger, full-color designs

If Lucian Rudaux was the Grandfather of space art, Chesley Bonestell was the father. He was born on January 1, 1888, 15 years before the Wright brothers first flew and 38 years before the launch of the first liquid-fuel rocket. When he died 98 years later, men had walked on the moon and spacecraft had visited most of the planets and many of the moons of the solar system.

Bonestell's paintings not only anticipated 20th century space exploration, they helped to bring it about. So realistic were his depictions of other worlds that visiting them no longer seemed fantasy. His artwork looked like picture postcards taken by some future astronaut.

LIMITED EDITION PRINT

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the inaugural publication of Bonestell's space art, Bonestell LLC is releasing 250 limited edition art prints of Saturn as seen from Titan. The last official printing of Bonestell's Saturn as seen from Titan was in the 1970s.

Chesley Bonestell's space art first appeared in the May 29, 1944, issue of Life magazine, accompanying the article, "Solar System: It is Modeled in Miniature by Saturn and Nine Moons." The article featured a series of paintings – including Saturn as seen from Titan – depicting views of Saturn from its various satellites and presenting the audience with a realistic and magical impression of Saturn and space. Thus began the era in which Bonestell's art provided a window to explore space in magazines such as Collier's, Fantasy and Science Fiction, Life, Pic, Coronet, Scientific American, and in books such as The Conquest of Space and The Exploration of Mars.

Saturn as seen from Titan became one of Bonestell's most iconic paintings. It is also one of the paintings he would paint again and again, the view evolving with time. The print for purchase is a version he created in 1952 for his daughter, Jane Webster. It was first exhibited in the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, October 1957. While its second and last exhibition was in 1988 at the California Academy of Sciences.

The print was released on June 11, 2014. This date is significant: Chesley Bonestell passed away on June 11, 1986, doing one of the things he loved most – painting.

To learn more about the painting's different incarnations, read Ron Miller's essay, "The Evolution of a Space Icon." Miller co-wrote "The Art of Chesley Bonestell," and is a best-selling author and award-winning artist.

The Saga of Lunar Landscape

For more than a decade it has been my privilege, among my other duties, to serve as curator of the National Air and Space Museum art collection. It comes as a surprise to many folks to realize that the Museum has an art collection. In fact, it includes over 4,700 works by artists with names like Daumier, Goya, Rauschenberg, Rockwell and Wyeth, and is perhaps the finest and best-rounded collection of aerospace-themed art held by any of the world’s museums. People who are aware that I manage the Museum’s art treasures occasionally ask if I have a favorite work in the collection, I do.

Chesley Bonestell’s mural, Lunar Landscape, was unveiled at the Boston Science Museum’s Hayden Planetarium on March 28, 1957. “No spaceship reservations are needed for a startlingly realistic visit to the Moon” announced a museum press release. Measuring forty feet long by ten feet tall, the dramatic panorama of the lunar surface was the masterwork of an artist who had done more than his fair share to set the stage for the coming of the Space Age.

The subject of proposed missions to the Moon have been mentioned before, still the beginning of a year is probably a good time to bring it up again.

I mentioned that maybe Disney would like to help fund the government direction to make a space habitat and it has been suggested that it might better be done for some commercial lunar enterprise proposal.

It might be interesting to look at some of the future space proposals from the idea of what is in it for yourself.

Russian manned lunar flyby spacecraft. Study 2005. Potential commercial circumlunar manned flights were offered in 2005, using a modified Soyuz spacecraft docked to a Block DM upper stage.

The customer would be shot around the moon as early as 2008 at a price of $100 million. Soyuz had already been proven for this role under the L1 program in the 1960's.

In August 2005 Energia, in collaboration with Space Adventures / Deep Space Expeditions announced the potential offering of flights around the moon to millionaires able to afford the $ 100 million price tag. Dusting off the work of the 1960's that resulted in the Soyuz being qualified for manned circumlunar flight, the new version proposed two mission profiles:

The baseline Direct Staged Mission would run as follows:

Day 1: Launch of a Soyuz TMA spacecraft by a Soyuz 11A511U booster into low earth orbit.
Day 2: Launch of Block DM upper stage by a Zenit-3 launch vehicle. After the Block DM's parking orbit parameters were verified, the Soyuz TMA began to maneuver to rendezvous with the upper stage.
Day 3: The Soyuz docked with the Block DM. After check-out, the Block DM fired to propel the Soyuz on a trans-lunar trajectory. After burn-out, the Soyuz undocks from the upper stage and continues on its ballistic course toward the moon.
Days 4-5: Coast to the moon. The Soyuz makes mid-course maneuvers as necessary.
Day 6: Loop around the moon at a considerable altitude. The Soyuz did not have the propellant capacity to enter lunar orbit, so the surface passed by below in an encounter of just a few hours.
Days 7-8: The long fall back towards earth, with midcourse corrections as needed.
Day 9: Re-entry in the earth's atmosphere. Presumably the Soyuz would make the double-dip trajectory over one of the earth's poles perfected by the L1 Zond spacecraft in the 1960's.

Another, more expensive variant of the mission foresaw the Soyuz spending two weeks at the International Space Station prior to the lunar mission - a total of 3 weeks in space, in earth orbit, and around the moon.----

Deep Space Expedition Alpha (DSE-Alpha), is the name given to the mission proposed in 2005 to take the first space tourists to fly around the Moon. The mission is organized by Space Adventures Ltd., a commercial spaceflight company. The plans involve a modified Soyuz capsule docking with a booster rocket in Earth orbit which then sends the spacecraft on a free return circumlunar trajectory that circles around the Moon once. While the price was originally announced in August 2005 to cost US$100 million per seat, Space Adventures founder Eric Anderson announced in January 2011 that one of the two available seats had been sold for $150 million. Space tourism is space travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. A number of startup companies have sprung up in recent years, such as Virgin Galactic and XCOR Aerospace, hoping to create a sub-orbital space tourism industry. Orbital space tourism opportunities have been limited and expensive, with only the Russian Space Agency providing transport to date.

The publicized price for flights brokered by Space Adventures to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft have been US $20–40 million, during the period 2001–2009 when 7 space tourists made 8 space flights. Some space tourists have signed contracts with third parties to conduct certain research activities while in orbit.

Russia halted orbital space tourism in 2010 due to the increase in the International Space Station crew size, using the seats for expedition crews that would have been sold to paying spaceflight participants.^[1]^[2] Orbital tourist flights are planned to resume in 2015.^[3]

As an alternative term to "tourism", some organizations such as the Commercial Spaceflight Federation use the term "personal spaceflight". The Citizens in Space project uses the term "citizen space exploration".^[4]

As of September 2012, multiple companies are offering sales of orbital and suborbital flights, with varying durations and creature comforts.^[5]

Private spaceflight is flight beyond the Kármán line (above the nominal edge of space at 100 km (62 mi) Earth altitude) that is conducted and paid for by an entity other than a government agency.

Congress Instructs NASA to Build a Space Habitat by 2018

NASA’S NEW JOB FROM CONGRESS

Some of NASA’s successes in 2015 include finding liquid water on Mars and icy mountains on Pluto. In fact, the agency has been making so much waves that the US Congress has decided to give it a raise.

However, there’s a catch.

Congress is instructing NASA to use some of that money, which is at least US$55 million, to construct a prototype model of a deep space habitat. An omnibus bill passed by Congress this month directs NASA to accelerate work on a “habitation augmentation module” that could be used for future deep space missions.

The funds will be part of the Advanced Exploration Systems program, which in turn is part of the Exploration Research and Development line item in the budget that received $350 million in the bill. It further states that “NASA shall develop a prototype deep space habitation module within the advanced exploration systems program.” NASA will also be required to provide Congress with a report within 180 days of the bill’s enactment detailing how those funds are being used to create the habitation module.

And Congress wants everything done by 2018.

Mars, here we come.

NASA celebrated news of an unexpected windfall earlier this month when after years of penny-pinching, Congress announced it would increase the space agency’s budget by $1.3 billion in 2016.

Now it's emerged that a chunk of that money has been earmarked to help bolster the agency’s plans for a Martian mission. As Popular Science noted, Congress directed NASA to use $55 million of its $19.3 billion budget to begin building a deep space habitat that will house astronauts during future exploratory missions to the red planet.

Congress gave the agency until 2018 to develop a decent prototype model of the “habitation module.” NASA must also produce a report on the status of the program in 180 days.

NASA said it hopes to launch a crewed mission to Mars by the 2030s, and to begin cislunar (between Earth and the moon) testing of a workable habitat by the 2020s.

As SpaceNews noted, the agency has already started working with companies like Bigelow Aerospace, Boeing and Orbital ATK to study habitat designs. The new funding and directive from Congress, however, “could force NASA to speed up” these plans.

NASA's habitation module may “shape deep space travel for dozens of decades,” wrote Yahoo! Tech. For now, though, very little is known about the habitat, including its requirements and how it will be built.

Via its NextSTEP contract, Bigelow Aerospace will demonstrate to NASA how B330 habitats can be used to support safe, affordable, and robust human spaceflight missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. As the name indicates, the B330 will provide 330 cubic meters of internal volume and each habitat can support a crew of up to six. Bigelow expandable habitats provide much greater volume than metallic structures, as well as enhanced protection against radiation and physical debris. Moreover, Bigelow habitats are lighter and take up substantially less rocket fairing space, and are far more affordable than traditional, rigid modules. These advantages make the B330 the ideal habitat to implement NASA’s beyond low Earth orbit (“LEO”) plans and will support the utilization of transportation systems such as the SLS and Orion. Additionally, the B330s, which will initially be deployed and tested in LEO, will be used as private sector space stations that will conduct a wide variety of commercial activities.

Time seems to move faster as one ages and I don't know where last year went.

Granddaughter will be 9 in a couple of weeks and shows grandma how to play games on a tablet.

She can call up TV programs on my tablet with COMCAST TVGO and use ear phones to shut out the sound of grandma's Family Feud game show on the big Samsung Smart TV. (bedroom still has a heavy 35 inch glass tube analog TV in an old cabinet.)

We have come a long way since DOS 1 and having to push video data a byte at a time to video memory locations.

I need to make room in the garage. I may have to get rid of the old BYTE and Dr Dobb's Journal magazines.

NASA Gets Big Boost in Final FY2016 Appropriations Bill

Congress reached agreement on a FY2016 appropriations bill overnight. NASA will get $19.285 billion, $785 million more than the President's request and $1.285 billion more than FY2015.

Division B (Commerce-Justice-Science) of the bill, H.R. 2029, provides

$5.589 billion for science
$640 million for aeronautics
$686.5 million for space technology
$4.030 billion for exploration
$5.029 billion for space operations, including up to $1.244 billion for commercial crew
$115 million for education
$2.767 billion for safety, security and mission services
$388.9 million for CECR, and
$37.4 million for Inspector General

The bill and explanatory statement are posted on the website of the House Rules Committee.

Among the big winners are planetary science, the exploration program (including the Space Launch System and Orion), and commercial crew. The commercial crew program is funded at the requested level of $1.244 billion, a win for the Obama Administration.

Planetary Science. Funding for planetary missions is $1.631 billion, an increase of $270 million above the request and $193 million more than FY2015. It includes $175 million for a mission to Jupiter's moon Europa, a priority of House Appropriations CJS subcommittee chairman Rep. John Culberson (R-TX). He added substantial funding for the mission in FY2013 ($75 million) and FY2014 ($80 million) although NASA did not request any. For FY2015, NASA requested $15 million and Congress provided $100 million. For this year, NASA requested $30 million. Not only did Congress add $145 million to that figure, but it directs NASA to build a lander as well as an orbiter. It reiterates that it wants the mission launched in 2022. NASA has been envisioning a later launch date to match the projected funding levels in the President's budget request.

Exploration: The Space Launch System (SLS) gets $2.0 billion, $643.5 million more than the request and $300 million more than FY2015. The funding includes $85 million for an Enhanced Upper Stage (EUS) that is needed for all but the first flight of SLS. The first flight, Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), will not carry a crew and will use an interim upper stage. EM-2 will carry a crew and the question was whether to spend funds to human-rate the interim upper stage or move forward expeditiously on the EUS, which will be human-rated. The decision was to move forward with EUS. The Orion spacecraft will receive $1.270 billion, $174 million more than the request and $76 million more than FY2014. Within Advanced Exploration Systems funding, Congress also directs NASA to spend no less than $55 million on a habitation module, which will be needed to augment living space for astronauts on lengthy trips beyond low Earth orbit. Congress wants a prototype habitation module no later than 2018. The final agreement also directs NASA to human-rate all systems prior to the EM-2 mission and "notes that additional funds above the request have been provided to address this untenable gap presented by NASA in its budget request." The "untenable gap" refers to NASA's current plan for a five year gap between the first test flight of SLS (EM-1), with an unoccupied Orion capsule, in 2018, and the second SLS launch (EM-2), with a crew, in 2023 (NASA insists it is still working toward a 2021 date for EM-2 as originally planned, but does not use that as its official baseline for the program).

Commercial Crew. Congress provided full funding for the commercial crew program: $1.244 billion. The House-passed CJS appropriations bill would have cut that to $1.0 billion and the Senate Appropriations Committee approved $900 million. NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden has been relentless in his advocacy for full funding for commercial crew to enable the United States to end its reliance on Russia for taking crews to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Congress adopted the Senate Appropriations Committee's decision to move this program out of Exploration and into Space Operations.

Bonestell's Cracked Lava Surface is REAL!!

In a previous post we mentioned the movie "Destination Moon" and the selection of landing site for the spacecraft and the paintings of Chesley Knight Bonestell,Jr..

The landing site was far enough north that a view of Earth would be low enough on the horizon for a camera to see it in the same shot as the horizon.

Bonestell had been concerned that his painting of the Moon might have shown an unrealistic rendering of the lunar surface with too many cracks.

Before we actually went to the Moon with orbiters, landers, and humans, there had been much speculation about what we would actually find.

Rocky mountains, and dust bowls that would swallow us up. or maybe volcanic action and lava beds with lava tubes.

And then you might want to practice for a landing you had never done before.

Harpalus is a young lunar impact crater that lies on the Mare Frigoris, at the eastern edge of the Sinus Roris. To the southeast at the edge of the mare is the small crater Foucault, and to the northwest on the opposite edge is the walled plain named South.

The rim of Harpalus is sharp-edged with little sign of wear or erosion. The wall is not perfectly circular, and has a few outward notches and protrusions, especially along the eastern half. It is surrounded by an outer rampart of ejecta, most notably towards the north, and is at the center of a small ray system. Due to its rays, Harpalus is mapped as part of the Copernican System.[1]

The inner surface is terraced, and flows down to the floor. The interior wall is the least wide along the northern face, making the floor slightly offset in that direction. Near the midpoint is a system of low central ridges.

Popular culture references

Harpalus was the rocket landing site in the 1950s science fiction film Destination Moon. It was chosen by artist Chesley Bonestell as it had a relatively high latitude and the Earth could be realistically displayed at a low altitude during camera shots. However, the resulting clay model depicted crazing (net-like cracks) across the crater floor, an addition to which Bonestell objected.

The net-like cracks in the floor of Harpalus that Bonestell objected to, and many, many frequent critics also later objected to are actually on the Moon.

But John Archer of the Movie said that the "cracked lava" lunar surface looks nothing like the surface of the Moon. And Bonestell, himself, after the 1969 landing said in reference to the cracked surface: "I tried to make it just as dramatic as I could, and, as a result, it looks ridiculous now. The Moon looks nothing like that".

However, as many of us have pointed out, there are millions and millions of square miles of unexplored territory on the Moon, almost all of which have at least been photographed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Consequently, the "rush to judgment" of many critics having seen only a small part of the lunar surface has, like everything else, failed to be true.

Here is a shot of the lunar surface from LRO, both photo (M110919730L) and its context location are given (see URL). The photo was taken on the inside of Giordano Bruno crater, and Bruno was burned at the stake! Both locality and namesake therefore meeting a fiery end!

It looks like Bonestell should be completely rehabilitated and given a pardon by many critics, who perhaps are more deserving of Bruno's ending than Bruno himself!

... Bonestell did great work. I have his "Conquest of Space" litho framed on my wall. I always thought the cleverest thing he did in "Destination Moon" was to make the landing site in Harpalus so that the Earth would appear above the horizon. Had any other Hollywood-type person chosen a site near the equator, the Earth would never have been visible to that camera they had because it could not tilt to a high enough angle. The Earth always appears at the same spot in the lunar sky, apart from a small wobble around the spot, which most people don't realize. At the equator, it is directly overhead. At the poles, you can't see it since it would be below the horizon (unless you stepped away from the exact pole far enough, then you might see the limb, or a larger part of the Earth). Etc.

One sees shots of Taurus-Littrow Valley where Apollo 17 landed, and some artist always sticks an overblown Earth above the mountains. Never can happen. The Earth is too high in the sky there to be seen in conjunction with the horizon. That's why Gene had to squat on bent knees when he took that picture of Jack Schmitt with the flagpole hanger pointing to the Earth (see fig. 58, p. 217, the last Figure in the Apollo 17 section in my 3D book-- you may not have the most recent edition as I have added a dozen of so more photos to the Apollo 17 section--see download URL immediately below).

In April of 1950 I was 12 and on TV there was Buck Rogers..

In June of 1950 "Destination Moon" showed.

It was based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1947 book, "Rocket Ship Galileo."

When you look at this time after WWII you see the science fiction books continuing the idea of defending the home land, only now we take it to space.

Look up! There is the Moon just waiting to be of use as an outpost where you could launch a weapon.

If the government won't foot the bill, just find someone with deep pockets and build a rocket in your back yard.

Rocket Ship Galileo is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, published in 1947, about three teenagers who participate in a pioneering flight to the Moon. It was the first in the Heinlein juveniles, a long and successful series of science fiction novels published by Scribner's. The novel was originally envisioned as the first of a series of books called "Young Rocket Engineers". It was initially rejected by publishers, because going to the moon was "too far out".^[1]

Plot summary

After World War II, three teenage boy rocket experimenters are recruited by one boy's uncle, Dr. Cargraves, a renowned physicist who had worked on the Manhattan Project, to refit a conventionally powered surplus "mail rocket". It is to be converted to run on a thorium nuclear pile which boils zinc as a propellant. They use a cleared area in a military weapons test range in the desert for their work, despite prying and sabotage attempts by unknown agents.

Upon completion of the modifications, they stock the rocket, which they name the Galileo, and take off for the Moon, taking approximately 3 days to arrive. After establishing a semi-permanent structure based on a Quonset hut, they claim the moon on behalf of the United Nations.

When sending humans back to the Moon becomes politically correct and something that catches the attention of the general public, the locations on the Moon need to be looked at for a continued occupation. Both polar regions have been suggested as well as places nearer to the equator.

Polar regions show promise for continued light and communication with Earth.

Equatorial regions will need to be able to survive two weeks of darkness.

Then their is the question of what kinds of lunar resources will be desirable.

If a long range to continuous use of the Moon is expected will there be a plan that has guaranteed funding until occupation becomes self sufficient?

Starts and stops may provide jobs for some.

They don't always move us forward to something that will be a continuing benefit to those others that remain Earthbound.

The asteroid will fly past Earth at a safe distance slightly farther than the moon's orbit on Oct. 31 at 10:05 a.m. PDT (1:05 p.m. EDT). Scientists are treating the flyby of the estimated 1,300-foot-wide (400-meter) asteroid as a science target of opportunity, allowing instruments on "spacecraft Earth" to scan it during the close pass.

Asteroid 2015 TB145 was discovered on Oct. 10, 2015, by the University of Hawaii's Pan-STARRS-1 (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System) on Haleakala, Maui, part of the NASA-funded Near-Earth Object Observation (NEOO) Program. According to the catalog of near-Earth objects (NEOs) kept by the Minor Planet Center, this is the closest currently known approach by an object this large until asteroid 1999 AN10, at about 2,600 feet (800 meters) in size, approached at about 1 lunar distance (238,000 miles from Earth) in August 2027.

"The trajectory of 2015 TB145 is well understood," said Paul Chodas, manager of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. "At the point of closest approach, it will be no closer than about 300,000 miles -- 480,000 kilometers or 1.3 lunar distances. Even though that is relatively close by celestial standards, it is expected to be fairly faint, so night-sky Earth observers would need at least a small telescope to view it."

The gravitational influence of the asteroid is so small it will have no detectable effect on the moon or anything here on Earth, including our planet's tides or tectonic plates.

(CNN) -- Don't look now, but an asteroid is heading our way on Halloween.

On the other hand, go ahead and look. As it misses Earth by about 300,000 miles (slightly farther away than the moon), the asteroid, named 2015 TB145, will be visible to those with good telescopes -- and NASA, which announced the discovery.

Calling it "one of the best radar targets of the year," a Jet Propulsion Laboratory report on the asteroid said that "the flyby presents a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object."

The asteroid will be traveling through Orion on October 30-31.

It's a good thing it will miss, though. The asteroid is estimated to be 300 to 600 meters wide and traveling at 78,000 mph. By comparison, the meteorite that exploded in the sky over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013 was about 20 meters wide.

2015 TB145 was discovered on 2015 Oct 10 by the Pan-STARRS I survey.  The object will approach the Earth
within 0.00326 au (1.3 Lunar distances or about 490 000 km) on 2015 Oct 31 at about 17:00 UT (10 AM PDT).  
The asteroid is in an extremely eccentric (~0.86) and
high inclination (~40 deg) orbit.  It has a Tisserand parameter of 2.937 hinting that it may be
cometary in nature.  Its absolute magnitude of 19.8 indicates that its diameter is probably within a factor of two
of 320 meters.  At closest approach the SNRs/run at DSS-14 are expected to be over 20000, so this should
be one of the best radar targets of the year.  We hope to obtain images with a range resolution as high
as 2 m/pixel using DSS-13 to transmit and Green Bank (and possibly Arecibo) to receive.  The flyby presents
a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object.

The encounter velocity is 35 km/s, which is unusually high.  

This is the closest approach by a known object this large until 1999 AN10 approaches within 1 lunar distance 
in August 2027.  The last approach closer than this by an object with H < 20 was by 2004 XP14 in July 2006 at 
1.1 lunar distances.

I also bought The Sentinel Hardcover – 1983 by Arthur C. Clarke and Golden Apples of the Sun, The Paperback – November 1, 1997 by Ray Bradbury, so I must admit I have had my head in books rather than looking up.

I think this is great and certainly what will help us to really make it happen if the kids don't lose the dream by the time they grow up.

Hopefully your school system has some teachers that will help them learn how to turn their dreams into reality.

It was fun seeing more detail in the book and the 3D imaging in the Movie was helpful as well.

Well the movie, "The Martian" is out and I have seen it twice. (science errors and all)

I am still waiting for a copy of, "The Martian: A Novel" to arrive by snail mail. :-)

I have received heads up notes about "The Martian" and how 20th Century Fox version might have been entertaining but strayed some from good science. Not having read the book yet, I don't have any first hand information how much Andy Weir followed scientific rigor. His pre-release interviews admits to a few slights for entertainment license so thought I would ask the Internet for some other opinions.

Hmmm, you may find some of the reports of interest.

What I am interested in is seeing what might interest folks that would help in developing the Moon in preparation for being Spacefaring

Do we want to look in on how we can engineer the problem or look for an Indy 500 car crash.

It wasn't long after Apollo 11 landing that the audience interest dropped off.

Come Apollo 13 problem and much interest.

Will they make it back, will they be lost, tune in for the 6 o'clock news.

Much like the Saturday Matinee's I attended as a kid, will Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon save the world?

Book to Screen: ‘The Martian’ Leaves Science on the Page and Goes for Thrills on Screen

Andy Weir’s self-published novel The Martian became a huge bestseller, and it was a big hit at the box office this weekend. The film also went over big with critics, and is primed to be a potential player in this year’s Oscar race. But for director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Drew Goddard to translate Weir’s book to the big screen, how much did they have to lose, and what did they choose to keep?

Looking at the skeleton of the story, Goddard kept Weir’s book intact. It’s a movie where there’s plenty of subtraction, especially where Mark Watney’s various duties and missions are concerned (more on that later), but Goddard basically condensed the narrative to fit a 130-minute runtime. However, there are no radical changes. Just subtraction.

The biggest removal comes in the third act when in the book, Watney is driving to the Ares IV landing site, and because he accidentally shorted out his communications, he doesn’t know that a storm is coming to make his journey even more difficult. Goddard removes all of this. Watney never shorts out his communications array, and there’s never a dust storm to avoid on the way to Schiaparelli. It’s the smoothest sailing he encounters until he has to launch himself off the planet.

But Mr Berger says that Nasa has been ‘quietly’ considering going back to the moon before going to Mars.

He said that Nasa is, ‘in internal studies, reconsidering the moon, including the lunar surface, for human activities as a significant stepping stone to Mars.’

He continued: ‘William Gerstenmaier, the chief of human exploration for Nasa, does not see the existing plan of a direct, 900-day mission to the red planet as achievable.’

In a tweet Nasa’s Head of Communications, David Weaver, seemingly quashed the significance of the news, saying: ‘Nothing new about #NASA plan to use Moon on #JourneyToMars.’

However, Mr Berger says it is significant, as the agency had previously shied away from saying it was returning to the moon.
