Exploration of duality through site components and observations:

When I first looked into the meaning for duality words like OPPOSITION and CONTRAST popped up, so my initial study of the term was looking for opposites on site. My focus was on capturing positive and negative spaces and opposing features.

Through exploration of these findings I came to realise that duality is much more than just contrast and opposites. Duality became this theory of an object with multiple functions or meanings. In conclusion it is a single object with many aspects that can, but not necessarily be opposing of one another. It becomes a multi-purposable.

negative space of the mountain creates the outline of another mountain

Semiology - The study of signs and symbols

Semiology/semiotics is the science of studying systems of signs, how they work and how we use them.

The signifier: (physical existance) this is the sign as we perceive it.
The signified: (mental concept that is the meaning)
The sign: (associative total of the two)

signifier + signified = sign

Denotation: (common sense, the ovious meaning of the sign)
Connotation: (the interaction that occurs when the sign and the feelings of the viewer meet)

Signifier: the cave
Signified: Shelter, security
= sign

Denotation: shelter, security
Connotation: closeness, family

Signifier: a chair
Denotation: the function to sit

Signifier: a throne
Denotation: the function to sit
Connotation: special dignity, royalty, prestige, authority

The connotative meaning dominates the denotative meaning.
