The site provides various ways for you to find foods sitting around your kitchen. By either using the search bar, perusing their categories, or heading over to their forum to ask more detailed questions, this site is shaping up to be an important tool for making safe and delicious dishes. One of our favorite areas of the <a href="http://www.stilltasty.com/"target="_blank">StillTasty website is their "ShelfTalk" section where they provide useful tips on how to preserve different foods and other interesting tid bits about expiration dates. The site also adds a touch of personality by tackling one question a day from their users which they post on their home page. This is definitely one site we're bookmarking for repeated use in our kitchen. Check it out and see what you think!

StillTasty - Your Ultimate Shelf Life Guide - Save Money, Eat Better, Help The Environment

Time To Party with Paella!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SVGXjtzhl2I/AAAAAAAAAtY/wYWC1NxkFIA/s320/IMG_0303.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283170477729224546" />
There's no more of a perfect time to tackle this festive and rich-in-Spanish-history dish then the holidays. Well, this time we headed up to the big apple to do a little poking around and were lucky enough to go to an amazing restaurant that specialized in ramen noodles of all things. We were a little skeptical at first wondering how a restaurant could thrive by offering ramen noodles as their primary entree but as soon as we entered the establishment we quickly realized that this was the place to be!

The first thing that struck us was the light wood paneling throughout the restaurant that helped whisk us away to our memories of Japan where we were lucky enough to visit a few years back. We were coming in thinking that this venue might be another authentic Asian restaurant with the bare minimum decor but this place felt a little more upscale and hip especially with the blaring rock and role music that forcefully filled the air.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SU3rhwUX2LI/AAAAAAAAAl4/Ana_p5svaIc/s320/Momofuku.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282136903114021042" />

As we were led to our seats, we were enticed with a swirl of stimuli noticing how the restaurant was buzzing with music, conversation, laughter, and chefs cooking up a storm in the open air kitchen displayed towards the back. As we perused the menu we were delighted to see the unusual selection of beer that strayed away from the normal domestic suds one would normally expect. We ended up going with the Lagunitas "the kronik" (censored) Copper Ale from Petaluma, CA which went exceptionally well with the sweeter then normal kimchi we chose as an appetizer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SU3wCqzZAbI/AAAAAAAAAmA/YhMe26lfrxM/s320/Kimchi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282141866615701938" />

The steamed pork buns that came next almost knocked us off our wooden seats! So tender, sweet, and juicy we had to hold ourselves back from ordering a dozen more knowing that the main course was yet to come!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SU3xVOKE_GI/AAAAAAAAAmI/QQ7SEVuZ3Us/s320/PorkBuns.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282143284855372898" />

Finally, our ramen noodles with braised and shredded pork came and, just like the steamed buns, the pork was extremely flavorful and melted in our mouths barely allowing us to even chew! The noodles were also rich in flavor as well helping to soak up all the bubbling broth in the bowl below!

Ramen Noodles with Braised Pork

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SU3ziEiLG3I/AAAAAAAAAmQ/AI3hrdSiIxs/s320/MorePorkRamen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282145704633637746" />

Ramen Noodles with Pulled Pork

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SU3zib4ePuI/AAAAAAAAAmY/sGI6gEbF_Z4/s320/ShreddedPork.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282145710901182178" />

As you can probably tell, we would highly recommend partaking in this dining experience if you ever have the opportunity to go! We ourselves can't wait to head back up to the city that never sleeps to do it all over again!

Momofuku (Means lucky peach!)

Strengths - Restaurant design, tastiness of food...especially the pork, selection of wine, beer, and sake, the desserts from what we hear, and reasonable prices for the quality of food we ate!

Weaknesses - Music volume and lack of room between seating. We were constantly bumping into other customers and waitresses as they walked by!!

Overall - Highly recommended. 3.75 stars out of 5

Go Green! Green Bean Casserole - A Holiday Favorite!

There's nothing that brings the family closer together over the holidays then tasty food but when you're wrapped up with buying presents and keeping track of where all your money went, sometimes there isn't much time to whip something up. Here is where one of our favorite dishes comes into play because of its ease, quick prep time, and it's deliciousness. Don't worry if you don't have a lot of skill in the kitchen, this recipe pretty much takes care of itself. Let's jump in:

Ingredients:

2 qt casserole dish

1 Family Size Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup (Regular, 98% Fat Free or 25% Less Sodium)

1-2 cans of French's French Fried Onions - enough to layer the top, and if you like, the bottom of the casserole dish.

1 three pound can of green beans. (or two smaller cans - but basically enough to create one layer of green beans across the casserole dish.)

1/2 cup of milk (We used skim milk to be healthy.)

Optional:

For additional seasoning you may want to add a few sprinkles of black pepper.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SUKuh4WsmGI/AAAAAAAAAko/92kVfiULwiw/s320/Green_Bean_Ingredients.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278973610318141538" />

Directions:

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.

Pour the 1/2 cup of milk into the casserole dish.

Then - start layering! Layer the bottom of the casserole dish with the Campbell's condensed mushroom soup.

Next, layer the green beans on top of the layer of mushroom soup.

Finally, layer the French onions on the very top.

Slide the casserole dish into the pre-heated oven and bake it for 20-25 minutes. You can tell when the dish is about done when the French onions are a nice golden, dark brown!

Don't forget to use an oven mit as the casserole dish will be piping hot when you take it out of the oven!

Creative Tips:

For a cheesier twist - throw in 3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese or 1/2 cup of Velveeta cheese into the mix!

For some additional festive cheer, throw in a cup of red peppers into the mix!

Mushroom lovers - that's right, throw in a 1/2 to 1 cup of chopped mushrooms.

That's it! Although you're supposed to serve this as a side we often just eat it as our main course! The Wisebread site lists out six easy alternatives that will help you stay cool during those sweltering summer sauna days. From freezing your favorite juice or yogurt to blending up some of your favorite fruits or chilled pudding pops, there are some really simple and nifty ideas for making your very own frozen feast. Our long time favorite has to be the deliciousness that is the frozen banana. So simple, it sometimes slips our minds that we can save a penny, and not sacrifice taste, by just chilling nature's very own candy. You may even try slicing up some watermelon, peaches, oranges, grapes, and apples, putting them in bowl, and sliding them into the freezer for consumption at a later date. Talk about a taste explosion! And hey...for an added twist, you may want to pick up Smucker's Magic Shell Chocolate to instantly coat those bananas or other favorite fruit of yours when they are ready to eat. (Magic Shell)

Cleaning the Grill with An Onion - So Simple You May Shed A Tear!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 219px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RGasEi2Hyfg/SUH8Bg3UhzI/AAAAAAAAAjo/vTexCJD-kaA/s320/Onion_Grill.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278777341186967346" />
This is one of our favorite little tricks we have been practicing for quite some time and we're glad to see we're not the only ones out there! If you are looking for a quick and simple solution for cleaning the ashes and grime off that old grill of yours then look to incorporate a food item you might already be buying to grill. Here is what you do - buy one or two large onions, cut them in half, and with a fork or you hand, strongly and swiftly brush the onion halves over the grills. The acidity in the onion helps cut through the dirt while also adding a little flavor to the grill. How perfect is that?!? This also works well with lemons and oranges too if you're daring enough to experiment. Check out details over at the very nifty site of - Apartment Therapy. Enjoy!

Control Your Cravings with Friendly Fast Food!

Oh how we love fast food! So, we were super excited when we ran across “The Charm” one weekend over at Ikea that not only grates all kinds of cheeses but also stores the shavings in a “Aroma-tight” container that saves your food for days to come! Talk about form and function all in one! The Charm comes with two sized grates for different sized shavings and at $4.99 for the two, it’s a cheap incentive to have freshly grated Parmesan cheese ready and able for any of your tasty salads, pasta, or chicken dishes you know you’re whipping up in the near future! This is definitely a worth while purchase and a fun utensil to have in your kitchen ready for action. On top of this recipe being extremely easy, quick, and inexpensive to create it is also pretty healthy and very delicious guarenteeing to turn anyone into a voracious eater of vegetables! It's zesty, delicious, and a great way to add a little something extra to any main dish or salad!

Let's get to it shall we? Here is what you will need:

1 -3 bunches of asparagus. Be sure to cut off the tough ends at the bottom of the stems.

1-2 lemons which you will be thinly slicing.

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil. (Or a 1-2 quick sprays of Pam if you want to cut out some of the fat in the olive oil.)

4 teaspoons of chopped fresh oregano or cilantro. (Or be lazy like us and buy these in the spice bottles at your grocery store so you can have them for other recipes too!)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper.

1 /2 teaspoon of minced garlic if you are looking for an added kick.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Toss asparagus, lemon slices, oil or Pam, oregano or cilantro, salt, pepper, and minced garlic on a large rimmed baking sheet.

Roast, shaking the pan occasionally to toss, until the asparagus is tender-crisp, 13 to 15 minutes.

It's that easy and what comes out is so refreshing you'll be smacking you lips after the first few bites! Make a little extra to enjoy another day since this saves pretty well in a zip lock plastic bag. If you do decide to save a little for a future lunch or snack, squeeze some lemon in the plastic bag to marinate the asparagus until next time. What results is a strong serving of a luscious, lemony taste explosion!

Scream for Ice Cream - Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Sandwiches

Now that the weather is turning a bit warmer, we went to our labs to whip up a cool quick treat that would help satisfy even the most serious of sweet teeth. Nothing says speedy, simple, and sensational like this crisp, crumbly, cookie treat that will have your taste buds tantalized in no time.

This delicious dessert was a big hit at our last casual occasion so we wanted to pass it on to help beat the heat on those dog days of summer soon approaching. Don't blink or you might miss how fast it takes to construct this cookie creation. Here is what you will need:

Ingredients:

Vanilla Wafers or Ginger Snaps. (We chose Reduced Fat Nilla Wafers to help keep this snack as healthy as possible.)

Sorbet - Peach, Raspberry, or Blackberry will do nicely. (We chose our favorite of course - Ben & Jerry's Berried Treasure.)

Directions:

As you probably already guessed, all you have to do is make a cookie sandwich with the above ingredients.

The best way is to grab a spoon and take a small scoop of sorbet, place it on top of one cookie, and then place another cookie right on top. Repeat!

You mat want to use the back of your spoon to smooth the ice cream coming out between the cookies to have them look more presentable, even, and less messy.

Once you finish, just place your creations into the freezer for about 15 to 20 minutes to firm the sorbet up so that it doesn't come flying out when you take that first bite.

Extra Touches:

To make an extra splash, try using two to three different sorbets - one different sorbet in each cookie - to make your presentation more colorful!

Garnish with mint leaves, small pieces of pound cake, or some fruit. (We chose grapefruit to add a little bitter contrast to this snack.)

If serving during colder times, give your guests some nice, spiced apple cider to help warm up their palettes after every bite.

That's about it. Just try not to eat them before your guests do!

Local Review : Brunch at the Fairmont Hotel - Washington D.C.

Looking for a great brunch to hit on a Sunday morning? We would recommend heading down to the four diamond Fairmont Hotel in Washington D.C where decadence appears to be the head chef tempting customers with every delectable treat imaginable. Don't forget your wallet though because you're sure going to need it at one of the priciest brunches in the city! Granted, the food selection and never ending champagne will satisfy even the most selective of palettes but, at $65 per person before taxes, you better come plenty hungry to devour all you can eat to get your money's worth.

What exactly do you get for that hefty fee? Let's break down a few choices so you can decide. This sinful spread includes:

An omelette  station

Mini Eggs Benedict

Shrimp

Oysters

Clams

Crab Claws

Sushi

Salmon

Pork tenderloin

Rack of Lamb

A beef tenferloin carving station

A selection of pates

Salmon

Pastas

Domestic and imported cheeses

A Bloody Mary station

A wide selection of Fruit

A chocolate fountain with fruit, pound cake, marshmallows, and cheeses to dip with.

An 18 foot desert buffet

Belgian waffles

All you can drink Taittinger Champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice

Apple wood smoked bacon and sausage

       The above list is only a small sampling of what they actually have waiting to tantalize your taste buds! If that isn't enough, the Fairmont also has classical music being played by talented musicians who put your mind at ease while you let gluttony take over all of your better judgment and dietary will power!

So is it worth it? We would say yes, considering this all takes place in a classically decorated, colonial meets modern, designed building where the staff is very tentative, pleasant, and ready to serve. We're just not sure if we would make the Fairmont a regular stop considering the hefty price however, it's definitely a place to gather on a monthly basis or special occasion. The ambiance is a bit upscale so business casual is strongly recommended and the "not-too-noisy" environment should help put you in the mood for engaging and intelligent conversations.

Location:
2401 M Street
Washington, D.C 20037

Phone Number:
202-429-2400

Dress:
Business Casual

Reservations:
Recommended

Hours:
10:30am - 2:00pm

Link:
The Colonnade at the Fairmont

Our New Favorite Summer Treat - Avocado and Mango Sandwiches with Cilantro-Lime Mayonnaise

Honestly, this citrusy sandwich is good any time of year when you're craving something sweet, healthy, light, and simple. Extremely easy and quick to make, this toasted treat is perfect for those warm spring or summer days where you are looking for a great snack to compliment that lemonade or ice-tea your sipping on that porch of yours! With both mango and avocado as the main ingredients, this scrumptious sandwich will have you finding that extra spring in your step once you devoured its goodness.

Before we move on, we wanted to point out that to make a stable sandwich with these ingredients you should cut the mango and avocado into thin slices so they don't spill out once you attempt to bring the two pieces of bread together with all the ingredients in between. As you can see by the picture below, if the ingredients are not perfectly leveled, they will be trying to escape once you take that first bite!

So, learn from our trial and error, and make everything nice and neat in those final steps before completion! Got that? Good. Here is what you will need:

1/2 cup light or fat free mayonnaise.

1/4 cup fresh cut cilantro leaves coarsely chopped. (Or be lazy like us and buy cut cilantro in a seasoning bottle displayed in the picture up top.)

1 table spoon of fresh lime juice. (We squeezed half a lime in the mix though since we love citrus so much.)

Coarse salt and ground pepper.

Whole wheat or multi-grain bread - Toasted.

1 head or bag of the lettuce of your choice. (We went with Romain but Bibb lettuce works nicely as well.)

1 mango peeled, pitted, and thinly sliced. (We were lazy again and bought pre-sliced pieces of mango which saved us time.)

1 avocado, pitted, and thinly sliced.

Directions:

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, cilantro, and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper to your taste!

Dividing evenly, spread toast with mayonnaise mixture. Top toast with lettuce, mango, and avocado; cover with remaining toasts. That's it! We were a little skeptical when we ran across this healthy snack combination but low and behold it came out pretty tasty! This creation takes into account that you must be a lover of salty treats since there is a popular hot dog topping involved. The trick that we found was to have an even balance of sauerkraut and cheddar cheese to really get a sense of the opposing flavors fighting to tickle your palette. Surprisingly enough, once the zen portion was found, this delightful treat kept us coming back for more. Despite the original recipe, we found that adding any kind of apple into the mix created a positive result. For an added kick, we trickled a little lime juice into the tortillas for a citrusy, sensational snack! All and all, it took about 10 minutes to prepare but once we had everything up and running, creating additional quesadillas took minutes!

Ingredients:

1 cup sauerkraut

1/2 cup water

Whole wheat or Multi-grain tortillas

Shredded cheddar cheese - (2%, low fat, or fat free)

1-2 Granny Smith apples - peeled and thinly sliced.

Optional Utensils:

Spatula

Mandoline

Cutting Board

Directions:

Put the sauerkraut and 1/2 cup water in a regular saucepan or skillet. Slowly heat up the mix until the water disappears. Remove to sauerkraut once complete. (Monitor closely so that the sauerkraut does not stick to the pan or burns once the water evaporates. You can always use a strainer if some water is left over or you decide to take out the sauerkraut early. )

Slowly heat up a good sized skillet with one tortilla layed out flat on the surface. (We sprayed a little Pam to make sure the tortilla did not stick to the skillet while cooking.) As the skillet is heating up, sprinkle the cheese onto half of the tortilla followed by the thinly sliced pieces of apple. Once that is done, just place an even amount of sauerkraut right on top followed by another small portion of shredded cheese.

Fold the other half of the tortilla covering all the ingredients. (Think taco!) Press gently with a spatula to help seal the tortilla together. Wait about 1-2 minutes so that the bottom of the tortilla gets to a golden brown. Flip the tortilla over, press gently down, and wait another 1-2 minutes so the other side cooks to a golden brown as well. Last step is to place everything on a plate or cutting board and gently cut in halves or quarters.

Optional:

Add some fat free or regular ham for some added goodness.

Toss in a few cranberries...yum!

Try a dab of lemon or lime juice for some added citrus.

Try pairing this with a nice sweet tasting Rieseling wine.

Clowning Around. No one wants to admit they enjoy things like these but it is like watching a cheesy ten car pile up where it is so bad you can't look away. Knives that cut cans, vacuum cleaners that can cut hair, a magical solution that can erase any scratch from your car?!? Sign us up! Yet, 98% of the time, the things you buy from infomercials end up not working like they show you on TV. That my friend is the power of advertising and consumer laziness for not returning things that do not work like they should....and boy do those companies bank on that!

One of our favorite infomercials happens to be the one for the Magic Bullet. Even the name sounds like it can transform your life in a minute! From the old lady smoking a cigarette that never goes out, to the way-too-happy couple who needs to be committed, we are happy to say that the Magic Bullet is one of the few items we can't live without!

Now, there is nothing revolutionary about this product except that it pretty much does what it claims. The fact that it is smaller then most kitchen blenders, thus saving valuable kitchen space, and still powerful enough to blend, chop, and mix most food including ice cubes is what won our hearts. What really got us to love this machine is the small blending cups it came with. The way we can blend our favorite shakes or drinks in the included containers and use those same cups to drink out of without having to pour our mixes into other glasses, like we have to with bigger blenders, makes the Magic Bullet our favorite for whipping up sensible portions of food and drink in a flash.

This is just the tip of the small iceberg. With the other handy attachments this mini whirlwind comes with, we were surprised at how versatile its simple design could be. From the "stay fresh" resealable lids and the shaker / steamer tops to the party mugs, small cookbook, and color coded drink rings it comes with, this fun little portable gadget is perfect for singles, college bound students, small dinner parties, or to even have as a personal blender at the office.

We have had our Magic Bullet for over two years and it seems sturdy enough to last a few more. We have bought this blender for a few of our friends who keep singing its praises. Obviously, for larger dinner parties and recipes you may want to opt for something bigger however, for everyday use we cannot seem to find anything that suits our simple, clutter free, efficient ways more then our favorite "As Seen on TV" product. We think you will be pleasantly surprised just like we were.
