Dobson, Ph.D., will leave the ministry as its primary radio voice at the end of February, the ministry announced today.

Dr. Dobson’s departure from the radio program and from official affiliation with the organization he founded in 1977 is just the "third chapter in a transition that began in 2003," when Dr. Dobson stepped down as Focus president, said Jim Daly, the ministry's president and CEO. It was a mutual decision between Dr. Dobson and the ministry’s board of directors, which Dr. Dobson left in February of this year, Daly added.

"The Bible tells us that to everything there is a season – and Dr. Dobson's season at Focus on the Family has been remarkable," Daly said. "He has done a superlative job in modeling the graceful transition of leadership from one generation to the next."

"We're excited about continuing the work he began, and following the biblical principles he's always followed, to reach today's families."

Dobson, who will continue to record new radio broadcasts between now and the end of February, remains "a man of health and vigor" and will continue to make his voice heard in the public square, Daly said.

"Dr. Dobson is a wordsmith, but one word I don't suspect we'll hear him using is 'retirement,'" Daly explained. "We wish him great success in whatever he decides to tackle next."

"Focus on the Family has never been about one man," he added. "That's why Dr. Dobson has always refused to have his name put on any building here. It’s about doing the Lord’s work in helping families."

Stay in the kitchen when you're frying, grilling or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.

*Give space heaters space. Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn. Turn off heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.

*Smoke outside and keep matches and lighters out of reach. Ask smokers to smoke outside. Have sturdy, deep ashtrays for smokers. Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children, preferably in a cabinet with a child lock.

*Inspect electrical cords. Replace cords that are cracked or damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

*Be careful when using candles. Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.

*Have a home fire escape plan. Make a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

*Install and test smoke alarms. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Interconnect smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. Test smoke alarms at least once a month and replace batteries once a year or when the alarm chirps to tell you the battery is low. Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old.

*Install sprinklers. If you're building or remodeling your home, install residential fire sprinklers. Sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive.

Officials urge residents to go to the centers to meet face-to-face with specialists to get information or assistance with their recovery from the mid-September flooding.

“Traffic has slowed at the centers we are closing,” said GEMA Director and State Coordinating Officer Charley English. “That’s good news, because it means we’ve likely met most of the information need, and help remains available through other sources.”

The following Disaster Recovery Centers will close at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10:

• Carroll County. WEBER
Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas gave birth to the modern oil industry, invented the handheld calculator and sent man to the moon. But can the Lone Star State cure cancer?

Texas is ready to try by investing $3 billion over the next decade in cancer research and prevention, which would make the state the gatekeeper of the second largest pot of cancer research dollars in the country, behind only the National Cancer Institute.

"I don't know anyone that would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with what they're trying to do," said Robert Urban, executive director of the Koch Institute for Innovative Cancer Research at MIT.

That gee-whiz impression is what Texas leaders sought in 2007, when the state created the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas through an ambitious bond measure approved by voters. Lance Armstrong, champion cyclist and cancer survivor, sold the plan to voters, and Gov. Rick Perry said he dreamed of a day "we talk about cancer the same way we talk about polio."

Texas is now putting out the call to scientists: Come and get the money.

read the rest of the article at: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_TEXAS_CANCER_FIGHT?SITE=WDUN&SECTION=HEALTH&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
