Laura Põld is an Estonian artist who splits her time between Tallinn and Vienna. Her recent solo show in Riga, She is Thinking About the Flammable Nature of Things, mixes ceramics, steel and textiles to explore vulnerability and the agency of materials. Põld has long been fascinated by how different materials feel and behave; she doesn’t hide technical “mistakes” but embraces them as part of the work’s life.

Põld’s projects often weave together craft traditions, eco‑feminist themes and personal memories. In one corner you might find a pitch‑black wall piece with jagged edges and a pebble pinned to it, nodding to darker histories of witch hunts. Across the room a delicate ceramic “Boater Hat” hangs like a fossilised straw hat, its surface alive with hand‑squeezed coils. She pulls inspiration from folklore and environmental stories, making her sculptures feel both ancient and strangely futuristic.

If you like artists who blur the boundary between craft and contemporary art, Laura Põld is worth following. You can dive deeper into her work on her official website and see studio updates on Instagram at
@laurap6ld
.

This week I am rolling the dreamy sounds of Widowspeak on repeat to keep me inspired and driven during my day. Widowspeak is a Brooklyn-based indie rock duo formed in 2010, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas. Their music blends dream pop, country, and classic rock into hazy, haunting songs. Over the years, they’ve released several albums, including their self-titled debut in 2011, “Almanac” in 2013, and “The Jacket” in 2022, each showcasing their evolving sound and lyrical depth.

Widowspeak’s music has been described as “cowboy pop,” a genre that combines country influences with indie rock and pop elements, placing them among other New York City-based bands that emerged in the late 2010s.

Tim Noble and Sue Webster create works from trash and other ordinary items. These sculptures take on a new life when light is added.

The art of projection is emblematic of transformative art. The process of transformation, from discarded waste, scrap metal or even taxidermy creatures to a recognizable image, echoes the idea of ‘perceptual psychology’ a form of evaluation used for psychological patients. Noble and Webster are familiar with this process and how people evaluate abstract forms. Throughout their careers they have played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.

Parallel to their shadow investigations, Noble and Webster have created a series of light sculptures that reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love, and hate.

In my recent work I have been exploring concepts of spatial containment in montages built from fragments of photographed and painted interiors. Architectures are disrupted by anomalous elements – contradictory light sources, faulty perspective, paradoxes of scale. Light casts shadows in the wrong direction, walls fail to meet in corners, an area of the image can be seen either as an enclosing wall or dark overcast sky.

In case you do not know what KickStarter is:

Kickstarter is a global crowdfunding platform based in the United States. The company’s stated mission is to help bring creative projects to life. …

People who back Kickstarter projects are offered tangible rewards and one of a kind experiences in exchange for their pledges. This model traces its roots to subscription model of arts patronage, where artists would go directly to their audiences to fund their work.

Built to Spill were one of the most popular indie rock acts of the ’90s, finding the middle ground between postmodern, Pavement-style pop and the loose, spacious jamming of Neil Young.

“Living Zoo” may be the quirkiest new song which is the one below in the video.

An older video for Conventional Wisdom features epic sounds with some knights in training.
