Excitement is at its peak!

Remembering the day I came back to Vancouver on September 1st 2010, with a finished mini-collection. DAMN it took a LOT of time and effort to go through it all...but it was ALL worth it!..

Now it's being presented at the Vancouver Fashion Week on November 4th, 7pm at the Empire Landmark Hotel (1400 Robson Street). I still have lots to do...many deadlines yet to meet.

Here are some visuals of what to expect...

In the first picture you can see the Gray Transparent Sweater and the Cable Vest. The gray sweater is made up of two different fabrics. One of it being stretch knit poly; which is the light-gray transparent section, and the other being cotton/wool woven fabric with a holey texture... The cable vest is 100% cotton and has embellishments on the hem and collar.... A beautiful, original piece... One you will NOT see anywhere else as it was thought of, designed and constructed by the Sesoren's ;) I have to say "Thank You" to my mother Tahire, who has supported me since the start and has helped constructing my collection.... A million kisses I send to you in Istanbul/Turkey!! Yes, the Fashion Week is based on spring/summer....but originally my mini collection is aimed at Fall 2010-2011. To adjust it to the spring and summer I added the hand-made floral tops, and the suede bikini bottoms. This collection is more so to check the pulse of Vancouverites (As it's never smart to start out as an independent designer right off the bat!!!! You gotta be veeery careful....) I hope my signature in this collection will lead me to design for local companies in hopes to add a little of me into our market ;) So..... Let's continue with the second picture... The Hippie Pants, Latte Faux Leather Pants and one of my favorite items the Vintage Bustier. The Hippie pants are 5% elasthane and 95% cotton. The background color is army green and has this amazing faded floral print on it! A RARE found fabric.... Soft, thanks to its finishes... Both the Hippie and the Latte Pants have the knee-cap stitching detail. Now I knew that that was going to be a trend this season. And all you have to do is check the window displays. It's all over the place, SO "trend-wise" this collection is on the right track... And I thought I really had to be careful while designing for the Vancouver industry as I have one set, of each item, in small/medium/large sizes that I want to sell out. That's why during my construction I made sure my products were going to be "sellable". Of course it's always great to have conceptual, over the top designs- but my aim is to "see the items being worn by people...see people liking what they wear"... (and not to forget to mention that these items are 100% original in style and fabric...some of the fabric is discontinued- I made sure of that... So "knowing that the item you wear can ONLY be seen on you" would make you feel kinda special now, would it not?... that's what I was aiming at with this collection.) Let's continue with the following set of visuals.

Again, one of my favorite pieces the Green Harness sleeveless sweater (worn by model Lauren Arrah / John Casablancas). Now I remember the story when I was plotting the design in my mind. I explained the style to my mother and she said "that's not possible". And I said "good...that means we're gonna make it!" ;) She trusted in me and my idea... And when it was finished with the leather shoulder epaulette, leather buttons and accessory chains that are kind of hidden in between the cables, my mother shrieked "I want one!". The outfit shown with that sweater is going to be my Opening Gala Presentation, where all of the designers attending Vancouver Fashion Week are going to present 1 outfit of their whole collection to the press...media...exciting... In the next picture Braleigh Nelson / Carrie Wheeler, shows off the faux Suede Belt. Now this belt is another "trendy" item to be seen this season in Europe... I have not noticed it in Vancouver yet (yay!). It's buckled from the side and has patches of the fabrics that the other items were constructed out of. It covers half of the front hip and half of the back. You can wear it on top of mini skirts (denim, earth tone leather ) on pants or leggings. Now a little bit about the photo shoot. i can hear some people's thoughts thinking "what about the horns? what's that all about?". I always loved mythology and I love science-fiction. When I design or style or even at times when I model, I "imagine". Hey, it's for free!! So why not use it, and try to make it work? I always love watching movies because it carries me away to a distant land...An adventure... Same with modeling, I love getting into character. It's just great to be away from reality even if it is for an hour or two. When I design, I like to feed off of an idea. Maybe an experience that I just went through. Here's a little story: I hadn't seen my parents for two years, living in Vancouver. So I decided to stay with them a while...that "while" turned out to be 8 months! ;) When I had left Vancouver things were looking pretty bad. There's always a way out of course. But emotionally I was at the worst phase I can remember. Then I found myself in my apartment in Istanbul/ Turkey. And MY LORD was that a culture-shock I re-lived again... Veeery crowded... A beautiful city that never sleeps, but that's why I ran away from it in the first place ;) I couldn't get inspired and focus on designing and my art. And there I was...with an idea. I worked as a designer in the industry for 4 years, but never had the opportunity and time to create my own private collection! It was HARD WORK. HARD TO COMMIT. Playing with wool and faux leather during the hottest season of the summer! But there was no giving up in my agenda. So "CRASH-BOOM-BANG" it was finished and I was on the plane flying back to Vancouver. I followed my intuition which said "it's the perfect time to make your wish come true". Now I'm a very spiritual person and I always listen to my gut feeling...but this one was pure responsibility. that's why I called this collection the CRASH Line: "Inner Gods at Creation". It's about being in tune with your femininity and the Goddess inside you...learning to follow the primal hunch and voice coming from your heart. Using those basic animal instincts to make our dreams come true..that nowadays we seem to ignore. Yes, women have that gut feeling. USE IT! That's what I tried to portray in my shoot. The protective unicorn and the fragile deer-like figure being attacked by a pack of wolves. Dreams being jeopardized by today's environment. Don't let it ;) Now back to the visuals... Close-ups.

The next item is the Green Skirt made of 100% cotton with chiffon rim and velvet trim and bow.

There is one more outfit that has not been added to the main photoshoots. It is the cotton, knit, Strapless Harem Overall. Made out of a very high quality fabric. It's color is deep purple. In this collection the black is my purple. As a mourning of summer I added faded floral print fabrics to give that vintage feel that I (and I know many others) love. For show purposes I have a Floral Chiffon Dress, a Satin Floral Dress and the Black Leather Strapless Skeleton Dress (which can be worn as a skirt on top of leggings or on top of a -preferrably black- tube dress.)

Now hoping that the information written here has inspired you in some way (hopefully not bored you to death :D) I'm crossing my fingers to see as many people as I can at my show.....

Usually when you think of Brazilian designs the first thing that comes to mind may be plastic flip-flops and miniscule beachwear. But there is more to the Brazilian style from fashion to architecture...A new generation of Brazilian designers, mostly based in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, are pushing the boundaries of South American fashion, art and architecture.

Firstly, all of the Brazilian collections start out with the prints (eg one at the bottom). Because of Brazil being a hot, tropical place their prints work well. And this artisan-Brazilian Style, of course, is the perfect alluring catch for the over-seas buyers.

WHY BRAZILIAN??? Where does this creative Brazilian influence come from??...Where all the other art and fashion centered countries get it from of course: "BACKGROUND/CULTURE". Brazil's complex colonial past and rich history of European, Japanese andMiddle Eastern immigration make the country rich pickings for designers. This provides the Brazilian designer with a "wealth of graphic icons, clothes, colors and identities." Apparently even the biggest designers there have had an extremely strong artistic background before they moved into design, which obviously adds a huge wealth to their work.

Julia Bolliger, head of journalism at Brazil's leading design and "experimental art" magazine Zupi, says "The interesting thing about brazilian designers- and this is something that should be a maxim for designers across the world - is that they concentrate less on technique and focus more on artistic freedom. I think that all professions here are more based on creativity and natural intensity of our people and less on studies and rules." And apparently examples of this artistic freedom can be found around virtually every corner in Brazil, on billboards and buses, in shop windows and showrooms and on television... With more and more finance being pumped into the industry and new designers presenting themselves on a daily basis, the Brazilian design explodes and its impact on everday life looks set to continue.

For fashion designers such as Rodolfo Murilo, one of the youngest members of this new troupe, it is an exciting time to be starting out in fashion. At just 22, he is currently the chief designer for Carlota Joakina, a label owned be Gloria Coelho (design sample on the right), one of Brazil's most respected designers who has showrooms in New York, paris and London.

"I think Brazilian fashion is now moving into a new phase," he says. "There are lots of young Brazilian designers now dreaming about having their own labels. Brazil is in fashion. Universities are opening new fashion courses all the time. We are feeling that the labels are being watched all the time by the entire world. The eyes are on us. You feel observed. It's great."

IDEA Brazil: IDEA Expands International Reach
On December 3, the first annual IDEA/Brasil program opened up for entries, initiating a new era in international design competition and cooperation. -IDEA/Brasil is the first "feeder competition" of the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).

IDEA/Brasil will be conducted locally according to the rules and processes of the broader IDEA program, yet tailored to meet the needs of the Brazilian design community. For example, the competition will include a new category for jewelry design to highlight an era of particular excellence and prominence among Brazilian designers.

Winners of IDEA/Brasil will be recognized and celebrated both within the host country and internationally, and will advance to the general IDEA competition. The IDEA/Brasil program will help promote Brazilian design both within the country and around the world," "The competition will provide a focus for the vibrant Brazilian design community to come together and celebrate their diverse efforts."

...now this is what I call "supporting the designers"... Brazil is very passionate and ambitious in being at the top of the list of World Fashion Centers!! All eyes are on you!!!

BRAZIL'S MOST IMPORTANT FASHION WEEKS ??

Brazil's SAO PAULO FASHION WEEK and RIO FASHION WEEK

Sao Paulo Fashion Week Summer 2010 was at the Biennial Building in Ibirapuera Park, Sao Paulo. The fashion show's theme is the Year of France in Brazil. A lounge by Favela Chic, a Brazilian hangout in Paris and London, is one of the related attractions.

SPFW has signed a commitment with the Sao Paulo Public Ministry which says it will suggest to participating designers that at least 10 percent of models hired for the event be of Afro-Brazilian and indigenous descent.

According to SPFW organizers, the Ministry has concluded, after one year of inquiries, that although there is not a significant number of models from those ethnic backgrounds in SPFW, the event is not guilty of racial discrimination.

ISSA London... Dressing Madonna and Scarlett Johansson!

(from the website) The name Issa comes from the scene of elation Helayel encountered on beaches at home in Brazil: "Issa' is a surfer's cry of joy when riding the perfect wave." That happiness remains central to her philosophy. The abiding spirit of Issa, even for clothes worn in formal situations, is one of sunshine and warmth. She want women to feel as relaxed, confident and sexy as they do on holiday.

The result is a label embraced by many celebrities- fans include Madonna, Kate Middleton, Scarlett Johansson, Sharon Stone, Kylie Minogue, Keira Knightley, Amy Sacco, Emanuelle Beart and Jennifer Lopez- and by women of all ages. Issa designs are not only luxuriously sleek and beautiful, but also highly wearable. Dresses are typically in soft silk jersey with distinctive colours and unique prints.

I can't tell enough on how much this brand's dresses and colors make my toes curl! I noticed Issa one day while I was going through a magazine. Apparently Nicole Richie had attended a 70's party in Beverly Hills where she was wearing a boho-style kimono-inspired wrap dress with blue and white butterfly prints from Issa London. It struck me HOW original the dress was! In color and shape it was so different from everything else we see and read about everyday... And once I started researching Issa and on the background information of what I had found, I was even MORE amazed with its reality! I will get to that in a minute... First let's meet the gorgeous designer Daniella Helayel...

" My designs are practical, fluid and chic."

Daniella Helayel (image on the right) created Issa when she couldn't find a dress to wear and decided the answer was to design her own. Her first collection, in 2001, was picked up by Daslu in Brazil; the second, a year later by Maria Luisa in Paris and by Barneys in New York. Now the Brazilian designer oversees a label that sells around the world.

"I wanted a dress that made me feel comfortable and glamorous at the same time, one that could take me anywhere, from work to play, bedroom to boardroom." says Helayel.

Daniella Helayel, now based in Chelsea, London believes the secret is to make dresses that both flatter and feel good: "Most of my team are women and we all try on each and every design. We all have different tastes, body shapes and styles. If a dress doesn't please all of us. I tear up the pattern."

When asked what three things are inspiring her at the moment: “Yves Saint Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré and Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, all in the seventies. I’m also finding the film, Picnic at Hanging Rock by Peter Weir, very inspirational.”

When asked who her ideal customer is: “The Queen of England. She is not just a style icon, but an icon in every sense of the word.”

If I were to come to London for an afternoon, where would you recommend me to go ;) ? : “I’d suggest a visit to the Tate Modern and the Pavillion at the Serpentine, shopping at Dover Street Market, tea at The Wolseley and a stroll through St James Park.”

I have noticed a couple of other Brazilian designers who have soared in a very short time... All of them having this incredible creative eye! You can easily see the freedom, passion and glamour in there design, so I decided to quickly google up and coming designers. And THAT'S when I bumped into the reality!! Brazilian designers TODAY ! Which will be the topic of my next post ;)

Now let's get back to the alluring Issa...

Issalondon's website is another crazy creative side to the brand... Imagine going through a royal entrance with crests of unicorns on them and butterflies fluttering everywhere...

...then when you want to scroll through the collections you find each product picture hanging and swaying on threads with the signature Issa portrait sketch glancing at you from the back while a very soothing light tune is tingling... Here are some samples from Issa's not-too-old archive autumn/winter 2009-2010... My favorite: the b&w polka-dot jumpsuit! (click images for a larger view!)

The following pictures belong to the pre-collection 2009... The one that made me bite my nails!!

What amazed me with this collection was the color combination. The "nude" feeling it gives is just fascinating! And the color palette of the deep forrest green and the tan combined with the tones of royal blue gives it the ultimate high-end chic'ness with a breath-taking sexy'ness as a twist! Phfew! Sweating while I write this!!

Gotto get me a pair of those, I tell-ya!!

SO exotic!! And THIS is exactly what I noticed is going on! This magnetic Brazilian touch... Maybe we are all tired from the "grey"ness of the world and t'is time to SPICE it up?! These colors give life...give hope and I know, right now, this is what everyone needs...

The next group of pictures are from the London Runway... Spring-Summer 2010

Another intrigueing detail that Issa uses in designs are the printed patterns... Very feminine be it geometric or animal prints. Also I noticed that in the collection, black and white is presented as an option other than the rainbow colors, which gives it diversity. In the pictures you can see that the never-aging 38 year-old, mega-famous-model Naomi Campbell has still got it as she struts down the catwalk!! Issa's 2010 collection consists of a few different prints and colors...

The print seen in this collection (above) is rather geometrical... It almost reminds me of peacock feathers. She calls this group the "amazon" and the "babylon". The bright green/yellow prints are the amazons, the pastels are the babylons... The first picture is described as "anthurium embellishment; long embroidered skirt". Simply irresistable!!!

The image on the right gives a completely different feel to the collection. These pieces, which are textured, are the perfect choice for a night out. Again it has an exotic charm to it. The black is a sequin dress and the other is made of scales...

This group (image above) is a set of black and white... Solid, patterned, assymetric...FEMININE!

The last group I'm covering (image above)... Bold&Beautiful... Again the signature assymetric shoulder and the bright colors are used, but this time moreso in a solid fashion. The silhouettes look basic, but the geometric details embedded on the bodice make the patterns complex. eg like the curves on the sides of the waist in the first long, green gown, and the diagonal stripes in the last long, pink gown...

Since I've started blogging on "Compassion" always being in Style,

I thought that the following information might be of use to you (people who'd like to know)...

What is the Leaping Bunny Logo?

"The Leaping Bunny Logo is the only internationally recognized logo guaranteeing consumers that no animal tests were used in the development/production of any product carrying the Logo as of a fixed cut-off date. The Logo can be seen on packaging, advertising, and point-of-sale purchases for cosmetics and household products around the world."

Why is the Logo Important?

"American consumers want it. Respondents to a 1996 poll overwhelmingly stated that they are more likely to buy a product that indicated it was not tested on animals. More than 58% of women surveyed indicated it was important to know which companies are not now testing on animals, even though virtually all ingredients have been tested on animals in the past."

"It is becoming increasingly necessary as more non-compliant companies advocate "not tested on animals" or "cruelty-free" claims and icons without the assurances offered by certification with CCIC."

How do I License The Logo?

"Companies may license the use of the Logo after becoming certified by CCIC, thereby making a pledge that, as of the fixed cut-off date, they do not conduct or commission animal tests, and do not use any ingredient or formulation that is tested on animals. A one-time licensing fee, based on the company's gross annual sales, is required for use of the trademarked Logo.

Once approved, you will be given a CD containing Logo image files and licensing authorization to use the Leaping Bunny Logo on products, websites, promotional materials and much more!"

Does The Law Require Animal Testing?

"NO! Neither the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the US Consumer Product Safety Commission requires animal testing for cosmetics or household products, respectively. There are sufficient existing safety data as well as in vitro alternatives to make animal testing for these products obsolete. While it is true that virtually every ingredient, even water, has been tested on animals in the past, we can help prevent future animal testing."

I know I used to always promise myself.."the next product I'm going to buy is not going to be tested on animals!" But each time, either I couldn't find the proper cosmetic product that was cruelty free or I just wasn't sure how the company experimented and tested.

I'd Rather Go naked Than to Wear REAL Fur...

Why are people so against real fur coats, but will eat meat?

It's hypocritical, isn't it?
I saw this question on one of yahoo!'s Question&Answers.
Here's what one of the readers wrote:

"That is hypocritical, but well, they are against real fur coats because it gives them the notion of being politically correct. However, their advocacy does not match their proclivities to eat meat, and so that makes it hypocritical. You are correct. I do not eat meat, but I do not condemn wearing real fur coats because I find it so gorgeous and actually very nice. But yet, to be correct politically, those people condemn the wearing of real fur coats. That really sucks."

After reading that I've decided to snoop around some more on this topic and bumped into this website: http://www.bornfreeusa.org/

Now... this topic is as taboo as Sex, Religion & Politics, so I won't go about trying to make you convince on something I believe in and make bull-shit statements on it... I am interested in FASHION and how these "important matters" affect it. More so what the sociological reactions are towards environmental issues like this.

It's true that "Even purchasing the tiniest bit of fur trim supports a cruel industry. Every year, more than 50 million animals are violently killed in the name of "fashion." Now with the test below you can actually separate fake from real fur... Remember that fur is not a "fabric" and even the tiniest fur trim is not a "byproduct"...

Is That Fur Real or Fake?

Here's a quick "cheat sheet" to help you become an expert "fur or faux" detective:

The Feel Test:

Feel the difference by rolling the hairs between the finger and thumb.
Genuine Fur: Feels smooth and soft, easily rolls between the fingers.
Fake Fur: Feels coarse.

The Look Test:

Blow on the hairs so that they divide, and look at the base.
Genuine Fur: Often made up of several layers of thin, almost curly hairs that form a dense under-wool through which the longer hairs stick out. The hairs remain attached to the leather (skin).
Fake Fur: Simpler in structure, individual hairs are often the same length and are even in color.

The Pin Test:

Drive a pin through the base where the fur is attached.
Genuine Fur: The leather resists; pin is hard to push through.
Fake Fur: Pin goes easily through the base.

The Burn Test:

Carefully pull a few hairs from the fur and hold them to a flame.
Genuine Fur: Singes and smells like human hair.
Fake Fur: Melts and smells like burnt plastic and forms small plastic balls at the ends that feel hard between the finger and thumb.

... Personally, I have turned to embrace the ideology of ethical consumerism. "As can be seen in the popularity of products ranging from hybrid cars to free trade coffee to sweat-shop free clothing and cosmetics and household products not tested on animals — all of which are experiencing measurable success. " In my blogs on fashion I will put in images of designers and their products, but you have always the option to "be inspired by their style and their point of view", but doing this environmental friendly... ...There is no escaping the furry beast... From coats and fur skirts, to fur-trimmed hats and handbags, designers have made sure of that there is no escape!!! Fake, man made or animal friendly, fur is everywhere this season and you should get used to that cozy-ness!! (Images Above: Louis Vuitton {notice the colorful furry neck accessory}; and ear-muffs are SO in right now... Take notice)

Furry Couture anyone?? Bold, bright and VERY diva-ish... If you like the look of fur but are not sure you can pull off such over-the-top styles, there are plenty of toned-down selections out there... You can try fur detailed accessories eg gloves, hats, purses, scarves... H&M is an AWESOME source to find fake fur elements (Image Above: H&M fold scarf...)

Fur coats and fur vests are the winter trend. It's possible that you can't see yourself in a coat (to be honest I can't either), but vests can be VERY versatile in looks! Wear it with jeans or leather looking black leggings and voila!! I would say I bow to Stella McCartney's Winter Collection....

This is the style I'm talking about (Image Above) - Tight leggings/over-the-knee leather boots and fur coats or vests... It will make you look slimmer and more defined. It is a futuristic and a VERY sexy appeal! You can't argue with that...

On the left you can see some samples of fur vests, coats and even cardigans... And you can bump into them almost EVERYWHERE right now... Go to your favorite store and fetch one of these items and then combine it with some black cotton leggings (for a non-flashy look) or for bolder-look grab those super-hot shiny black "leather" inspired leggings and finish it off with black boots...
