Bible study word - Offend

Offend
A Bible study on dealing with offending and being offended.

We first learn of offense when another person offends us.

Later we realize that we sometimes offend others, and that going against God's requirements offends Him.

Jesus, who never sinned, sometimes offended other Jews, even with the truth.

Deb: I looked through some of it. Looks like a good study!
Nan: There sure is more than meets the eye. At first I thought it is wrong to offend others. But Jesus offended Pharisees with truth over tradition so it isn't always sin for sure.
Geo: So Jesus offended home-towners and Pharisees by being and stating His divinity and authority. I guess if we are also God we too can offend them, too. Otherwise, not so much. Or so all the other NT references seemed to say.

Nan: Well Jesus also offended them by healing people on the Sabbath and pointing out that they didn't really understand scripture as well as they thought. Nicodemus took that kind of offense and became a believer. Some disciples who were offended about eating Jesus' flesh stayed faithful. And we know Peter worked through being called a stumbling block to Jesus.

Lord, as we read of the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt years ago, and as we watch news of the current crisis in Egypt, give us new insight into Your word and plan for the Middle East in our lives.

Not all apps are equal

Not all apps that seem scriptural really are.
Take for example John 8:32:
"...You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

The app here is not exactly that telling the truth about something you have done wrong will make you free from the consequences.
After all, when George Washington supposedly told the truth about chopping down the cherry tree, he went on to become the first president of the USA.
But applying the app
"I'll tell the truth now - so I'll be set free"
overlooks the fact that our new life in Jesus Christ is closely tied to knowing and applying the truth according to scripture.
Years ago a student was caught cheating on a Pharmacology exam in Medical School. He admitted that it was wrong to cheat, but he thought acknowledging that should bring forgiveness. He was sure that God had forgiven him, and that the Dean's office and faculty should, too. Instead, he was dismissed from the MD program.
Did Jesus cheat? He was tempted to, but didn't do it. Matthew 4:3
Did Jesus take shortcuts, letting the end justify the means or letting angels do for him what he was sent by the Father to do himself? Matthew 4:5-11
Did Jesus do whatever he wanted? Not according to Matthew 26:42 and Luke 22:42
What does John 14 teach about the relationship between truth and obeying God?

Jesus talked about those who believe the truth: "They are not of the world even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth." John 17:16-17 What does this mean?

Definition: APP or application

"There's an app for that" refers to the Wikipedia definition for "app":

"Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. It helps to solve problems in the real world."

While we are not computers and the Bible is not actually software, the Bible provides much application information we can use to perform problem-solving tasks in the real world.
Jesus demonstrated this after His 40 days and nights without food in the wilderness. Related in Matthew 4:1-11, when the devil offered Him temptations for food, for credential testing, and for worship, Jesus responded, not with "No!" and not with His own explanations for refusing the offers, but with quoting scriptures specific to the temptations: "It is written..." In this way, Jesus used scriptures as application "apps".
The devil's temptations included some scriptures and some truth.
We see examples of that in sayings still used today, like "God helps those who help themselves." But our help often interferes with God's help. Look at Abram (later Abraham) who was helped by God without being able to help himself. It is written, "Now God said to Abram, 'Get out of your country, and from your relatives, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation...'" Genesis 12:1-3.
There was no provision made by God for Abram to help himself or Sarai (Sarah). Abram was not able to make even 1 offspring toward God's promised great nation. And yet Abraham "believed in God; and He reckoned it to him for righteousness." Genesis 15:6
Despite all Sarah's attempts to help make God's promise come true, her "best" result was a son, Ishmael, between her bond servant and Abraham, not her own son with Abraham. That is written in Genesis 17:18-22 and Romans 4

Changed life - there's an app for that

The "app" Jesus showed Nicodemus would lead him to a different life than he had with all his experience and all his learning. And no, Nicodemus wouldn't have to figure out a way to make it happen himself!
What is this app?

Jesus answered him,
"Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God."
Nicodemus said to him,
"How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?"
Jesus answered,
"Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God!
That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Don't marvel that I said to you,
'You must be born anew.'
The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don't know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered him,
"How can these things be?"

One "app" God used to show Jesus' disciples that Jesus was Messiah was his resurrection. What a difference his coming back to life made in their lives and can make in ours.
What is this app? Peter wrote about it in 1 Peter, calling it "new birth" and "being born again".
*New birth becomes living hope, because God resurrected Jesus from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3-5
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to his great mercy
became our father again
to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance
that doesn't fade away,

After reading Numbers and starting Ephesians, "Do you notice the change, jumping from seeing the LORD resolve Israelite land inheritance problems to His solution for our spiritual inheritance? He blesses those people He chose, even before He created the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. His plan is to adopt these people as sons through Jesus Christ. All the instructions for daily, weekly, monthly, and special sacrifices from the altar are refocused upon the one sacrifice of Jesus of Nazareth, so that we are redeemed and our sins are forgiven through His blood. The LORD knew when the time was right for Israel to take over the land of Canaan, and He knows when the time will be right to bring all things together under the Messiah. We have little idea of the complexity of His plan for us on Earth as He includes people in Christ when they hear and believe His message. Have you heard? Have you believed? Then you have been marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit, guarenteeing your inheritance in Him until we all are redeemed as God's possession. Praise Him for His plan!
