Earthquakes in Chile, Haiti, Taiwan and Japan, are they related?

Is Mother Earch angry? Is this sign already that something like "End of the World" will happen? I hope not! Or at least it seems that way, with three significant earthquakes in the past week: A 7.0 magnitude quake near Japan last Friday, the huge 8.8 quake near Chile on Saturday, and a 6.4 near Taiwan earlier today. And, of course, there was the devastating 7.0 quake in January in Haiti that killed more than 200,000 people. That's a very bad number of deaths.

So, is there any connection among all the quakes? "No, not that we can see," says Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. "We've had quite a few quakes in the past two months, but not more than average."

What has made the recent earthquakes newsworthy is that the earthquakes have hit near populated areas, says Caruso. Another 6.4 quake this morning rattled the tiny Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, but no injuries have been reported. So it is like saying that earthquake is normal?

In an average year, the geological survey estimates that several million earthquakes occur around the world. However, many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.

According to long-term records (which exist since about 1900), the U.S.G.S. expects that about 17 major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 - 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) will affect the world in any given year.

Caruso says the three recent Pacific quakes are all related to the so-called "ring of fire," a seismically active region that surrounds the ocean. However, the distances between the quakes are far too great for there to be any relationship between them.

So this means that earthquake is just like Mother Earth is stretching her legs on a daily or monthly basis. This means we just need to be prepared all the time because we'll never know when it would hit us.

Coins from Alexander the Great discovered in Syria

As early as 1st to 4th centuries B.C. coins were found by local man. More than 250 silver coins dating back to the time of Alexander the Great were unearthed in northern Syria, a Syrian archaeologist said Thursday. Youssef Kanjo, the head of archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Aleppo, said the coins were discovered two weeks ago in northern Syria when a local man was digging the foundations of his new home. The local man is a local hero as he discovered one important archaeological treasures.

The man handed the coins, that were found in a bonze box, to authorities, Kanjo said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

The coins date from the Hellenic period, which ranges from 4th to the 1st centuries B.C. after Macedonian warrior-king Alexander the Great spread Greek culture into Middle East and beyond with his conquests.

Kanjo added that the box contained two groups of coins, 137 "tetra" drachmas (four drachmas) and 115 single drachma coins.

One side of the tetra drachma coins depicts Alexander the Great, while the other side shows the Greek god Zeus sitting on a throne with an eagle perched on his extended arm.

Some of the coins bear the inscription King Alexander in Greek, while others say Alexander or carry the name of King Philip. Maybe this is referring to his father.

After Alexander the Great's conquests, many of the successor kingdoms in the Middle East adopted drachmas as their currency. The discovery is extremely important and would be added to our archaeological treasures that date back to the Hellenic era. It will be a discovery that added more proof on the history of King Alexander in Greek.

Killer Whale Trainer Died by Attack

Trainer killed by her trained killer whale with people watching on her killed. Can you imagine the people watching the trainer died in the mouth of the Killer Whalte?

SeaWorld said that 12,000-pound Tilikum pulled Dawn Brancheau, 40, into the orca's tank about 2p.m..
Witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel that the animal suddenly grabbed Brancheau by the upper arm, tossed her around in his mouth and pulled her beneath the water as dozens of tourists looked on in horror. This is really horror!

Brazilian tourist João Lúcio da Costa Sobrinho, 28, and his girlfriend, Talita Oliveira, 20, watched the attack from an underwater-viewing area where they had gone to take photos.

Suddenly, they saw a woman in the killer whale's jaws, her face bloody. The more than 20-foot-long orca circled round and round, turning her over and over, they said.

"It was terrible," Sobrinho said. "It's very difficult to see the image."

Witnesses who watched the attack while eating at the "Dine with Shamu" show — a poolside buffet where trainers demonstrate their connection with the animals — told the Sentinel a female trainer was petting a killer whale when it grabbed her and plunged into the water.

It reappeared on the other side of the tank and leapt up holding the woman, they said.

Within minutes, an alarm sounded, and security workers escorted the spectators out. Some people were screaming, and children were crying, Sobrinho and Oliveira said. The scene was more orderly at "Dine with Shamu."

Several spectators said the animals had been agitated during a 12:30p.m. show, playing or fighting with one another and refusing to obey commands to splash the crowd, a staple of the program. Figure it out how risky the job of the killer whale trainers.

"It is with great sadness that I report that one of our most experienced animal trainers drowned in an incident with one of our killer whales this afternoon," SeaWorld President Dan Brown said in a statement to the media. "We've initiated an investigation to determine, to the extent possible, what occurred."

Brancheau had worked at the park since February 1994. Ever since she visited SeaWorld with her family about 30years ago, Brancheau's goal had been to train killer whales, said her mother, Marion Loverde of Indiana. Experience does not mean that your safe in this job.

"Everyone knew that was her dream," Loverde said.

Brancheau's supervisor, Chuck Tompkins, said Brancheau knew the risks of the job.

‘"She loved what she did, and she loved being with the animal. And she understood the risk," said Tompkins, corporate curator in charge of animal behavior for SeaWorld Parks & Resorts. "Dawn knew how to be able to connect with animals and with people."

Tilikum, the largest killer whale at any SeaWorld park, has been involved in two previous deaths.

He was one of three killer whales blamed for the 1991 drowning of a trainer while he performed at the now-defunct Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia. In 1999, the dead body of a naked man was found lying across Tilikum's back at SeaWorld Orlando.

Tompkins said Tilikum would not be put down because of the attacks. His name, according to various sources, means "welcome," "greetings" or "friend" in Chinook jargon.

SeaWorld Orlando and San Diego will be open today, but there will be no "Believe" or "Dine with Shamu" shows, both of which feature killer whales. How many fatal incidents would they wanted to have before they will take actions or preventions?

Former NBA Player Sentenced 5 Years in Prison

The former NBA player was sentenced to a maximum of 5 years in prison. Ex-New Jersey Nets baller Jayson Williams to five years in prison for shooting and killing his limo driver, Costas "Gus" Christofi, in 2002. It is 8 years already since the killing happened.

A tearful Williams, apologized to Christofi's family saying, "There's not a day I wake up and I don't feel sorry for what I did to Mr. Christofi," CNN reported. Atleast he apologized for the crime.
Williams entered a guilty plea to aggravated assault in the fatal shooting of Christofi. His plea deal required that he spend from 18 months to five years in jail, without chance of parole. The Somerset County Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman sentenced Williams to the maximum possible time served. Williams has waived his right to appeal, CNN pointed out. He should have sentenced more than 5 five years if he didn't plea guilty of the crime.

Following his sentencing, police will take Williams to the Central Reception and Assignment Facility in Trenton, New Jersey, where he will be photographed, have DNA samples taken and be given medical, dental, psychological and educational evaluations.

Afterwards, authorities will decide where he will the former NBA player will be placed.

'Deadliest Catch' captain dies of Discovery Channel

Discovery Channel's awesome "Deadliest Catch" reality show has always been very exciting with the bravest captain on board Capt. Phil Harris. The Discovery Channel says the captain of the "Deadliest Catch" fishing vessel Cornelia Marie has died. Capt. Phil Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The 53-year-old fisherman was flown to Anchorage for surgery.
A Discovery spokesman says the Harris family contacted the network Tuesday evening with word of his death. Sad news for Discovery Channel.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman issued a statement on behalf of sons Jake and Josh Harris. It says in part, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad — Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end."

In the network's own statement, Hillman says, "We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart."

In an e-mail she said no additional information was immediately available.

The Discovery Channel reality show depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska. Harris' fishing vessel was based in Seattle.

Could Howard Stern be the new American Idol judge?

What do you think on Howard Stern as the new American Idol judge? Something tells me we need to keep Howard Stern far, far away from judging American Idol. We announced last week that Stern was in talks with American Idol producers to possibly take Simon Cowell's seat at the judging table. Now Howard is talking about the possibility and convincing me it would be a bad, bad idea.

It's being said that Idol producers are looking for someone controversial to take Simon Cowell's spot as a judge. Yes, Howard Stern is quite controversial, but maybe a little too much so? After all, tons of kids watch American Idol and Stern doesn't exactly have a clean mouth. Yeah, it will make American Idol more interesting and funny to watch.!.
I just have a feeling Howard Stern wouldn't exactly be taking the job for the right reasons. First of all, he constantly calls the show a "karaoke contest" and seems to only want the job for the money. He says, "There's not a better job on the planet than judging that f---ing karaoke contest... It would be the best thing that happened to me... What a cush job -- $100 million for four months. Who wouldn't take that?" Um. I think a lot of people would be offended to hear him referring to the show as a karaoke contest.

And $100 million is exactly what Idol producers would have to pay him in order for him to take the job. He says, "They'd have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.... A $100 million to judge a karaoke contest? Yeah, I would do that show for $100 million." That'a big amoung of money.

In true Howard Stern fashion, he thinks he's perfect for the job replacing Simon Cowell, saying, "If I do say so myself, I can't imagine anyone else but me replacing [Cowell]... I mean, I don't know. How else are they going to make that show work? Who knows how to broadcast and who knows how to be interesting? And who's not afraid to speak their mind?"

Call me crazy, but would parents want their little kids watching the show with Howard Stern sitting on board? Who knows what could come out of that guy's mouth. He's a different kind of controversial than Simon Cowell is. Not to mention, he knows absolutely nothing about music! Yeah, that's the bad thing on it. How can a judge be a judge if he doen't how to sing.

Peyton Manning of Super Bowl field poor in "Sport"

Who is not sport in the world of super bowl? Peyton Manning(notes) didn't shake hands with New Orleans Saints players after his Indianapolis Colts lost 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV. Apparently some think this is a sign of poor sportsmanship from the NFL's greatest player. It's not.

Walking off the field without congratulating Drew Brees(notes) may go against our misguided notion of what sportsmanship should be, but it wasn't at all disrespectful or bitter. It shows how much Peyton Manning wanted to win the game. And who can argue about that? No one!.
LeBron James was caught up in a similar controversy during the NBA playoffs last year and the same thing that was true then is true now: A perfunctory handshake doesn't make someone a good sport. It either makes them indifferent to the game's result or a good actor. What would people have preferred Peyton and LeBron do, laugh off the loss with apathy and treat the victors to dinner after? This isn't Little League.

The only time I question my sports fandom is when the players I'm rooting for seem to care less about the result than I do. I don't want to see my team's quarterback laughing on the sidelines while losing a big game. If I care so much, why shouldn't the players? In the world of sport, there are winners and there are losers.

"It's just a job for these guys," is a familiar refrain. The natural response to that is the great ones make their job their passion. Hall of Fames don't tend to include guys who can't care. The desire to win is what sustains greatness. You think Michael Jordan was hugging Isiah Thomas after losses in the 1980s? Or that Larry Bird stayed on the court to congratulate Kareem? Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio weren't going out for drinks after the Yankees beat the Red Sox. The great ones are competitors and competitors can't flip a switch immediately after a devastating loss and act like it didn't matter.

Being a good sportsman is playing fair, respecting the game and giving credit after to an opponent. Manning did all those things Sunday. In his post-game press conference he said of his quick exit:

"I certainly know how it was three years ago when we won. There's not much consolation for the guys who didn't win. There's the stage being set up and the celebration. It's time for the Saints to celebrate. It's their field."

That's probably a tad disingenuous, but no more than it would have been if Peyton had walked over to congratulate Drew Brees.

For the record, Peyton did call Brees later in the night. Said the Saints quarterback: "Peyton's a class guy." If the man who was supposedly snubbed thinks so, that's enough for me. We will just call it the day for Peyton, maybe he will realize later.

Bob Marley birthday concert Canceled by Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- An annual concert that draws hundreds of tourists to celebrate Bob Marley's birthday has been canceled for the first time since its inception in 1992 over noise complaints. Noise complaints by boring people. They don't even respect the celebrant Bob Marley.

Police denied promoter Clive Pringle an event permit because of several run-ins with police and residents in Negril, superintendent Dezeita Taylor said Thursday.

The Bob Marley Birthday Bash that Pringle organized every Feb. 6 regularly exceeded the 2 a.m. curfew established under the Noise Abatement Act, she said.

Last year Pringle was fined $560, police said.

Pringle said he appealed, but doubts the concert will be held.

The show was launched in 1992 in Negril -- a seaside town west of Kingston -- and has attracted up to 3,500 people, Pringle said.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett recently called for a revision of the Noise Abatement Act to extend time for events popular with tourists.

Oil at the lowest level in 2 Months $72 per barrel

Oil prices ended the week at the lowest level in nearly two months, weighed down by a stronger dollar and persistent doubts about the health of the global economy.
Benchmark crude for March delivery on Friday lost $1.95, nearly 3 percent, to settle at $71.19 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil plunged as low as $69.50 a barrel earlier in the day. That's the cheapest oil has been since Dec. 15.

Crude prices have now dropped more than 14 percent since cresting at a 15-month high of $83.18 a barrel on Jan. 6.
Energy prices were propped up earlier in the year by predictions that China, India and other developing nations would aggressively boost petroleum imports to feed their growing economies.
But China has since taken steps to control risky bank lending and to cool off its economy.
Meanwhile, Greece, Portugal and Spain are dealing with massive budget deficits, and their continued troubles helped push the euro lower Friday.
A two-day jump in prices earlier in the week evaporated as the dollar surged against the euro. Analysts said they also suspected investors who had snapped up oil contracts changed their minds and were trying to get rid of them fast, before the weekend.
"It's quite obvious that someone blew up" in their oil investments, analyst and trader Stephen Schork said. "I'm not sure who it is, but someone is bleeding right now."
The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the greenback versus other major currencies, jumped Friday to its highest level since July. Oil, which is priced in U.S. currency, tends to fall when the dollar strengthens and makes barrels more expensive for holders of foreign money.
Even a surprise drop in the unemployment rate -- from 10 percent to 9.7 percent -- wasn't enough to encourage investors. Manufacturers and retailers may have added jobs, but the government report showed the economy has a long way to go.
Meanwhile, Americans are burning much less fuel than previous years. The Energy Information Administration said this week that U.S. petroleum consumption has dropped for four straight weeks.
"There's a lot of oil sloshing around out there," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates. "If I were to give a fair price for oil it would be closer to $60" a barrel.
Retail gasoline prices increased this week for the first time since the middle of January. The national average added a half penny at $2.664 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.
A gallon of regular unleaded is 2.1 cents cheaper than a month ago, but it's 75.7 cents more expensive than the same time last year.
In other Nymex trading in March contracts, heating oil dropped 6.04 cents to settle at $1.8748 a gallon, and gasoline fell 6.44 cents to settle at $1.8864 a gallon. Natural gas added 9.9 cents to settle at $5.515 per 1,000 cubic feet.
In London, Brent crude gave up $2.54 to settle at $69.59 on the ICE futures exchange.

1) Antigua: The slaying of a Bay Area woman on a shore excursion at Pigeon's Point Beach Jan. 19 was the fourth major incident in the last two years involving tourists visiting the island. In 2008, a honeymooning British couple were slain in their hotel room; in 2009, an Australian yachtsman was killed when walking with his girlfriend and daughter; in September, six Carnival Cruise passengers brawled with police and were arrested. In the recent incident, San Francisco State University graduate student Nina Nilssen left an afternoon beach barbecue and walked off alone on a secluded path where she was killed.

2) Canada: British Columbia authorities have put in place an Olympics expedited court to handle prosecution of minor crimes that occur during the Olympic Games. The temporary court system's purpose is to resolve all minor crimes within two weeks in the hope that international visitors will not have to remain in Canada longer than they had planned or return to Canada for trials. Crimes such as simple assault, drunken driving, petty theft and credit card fraud will be handled by the expedited court system.

3) Colombia: In Cartagena, Colombia's primary tourist city on the Caribbean Sea, a series of assassinations in the first weeks of this year have authorities worried that drug gangs from elsewhere are now fighting over turf in what, until recently, has been a tranquil city. National officials sent 270 additional police officers to patrol the streets, but that did not prevent an early morning assault by seven hooded and armed men on a hostel where they rounded up the 21 foreign guests, locked them in a room and stole all of their valuables. Police arrested three suspects and believe the crime was aided by the hostel staff.

4) Peru: Three days of heavy rain over the weekend caused floods and landslides that buried the only rail link between Cuzco and Machu Picchu, stranding some 2,000 tourists at Aguas Calientes, the rail terminus at the base of the mountain below the famous Inca citadel. Landslides also hit the Inca Trail, killing an Argentine hiker and a Peruvian guide. Authorities closed the trail and declared a state of emergency in Machu Picchu and surrounding areas. Floods washed out the Pisac bridge and the Huallabamba bridge was under water.

5) Philippines: The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert Jan. 20 warning of the risks of travel to the central and western portions of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, in particular, the provinces of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat, and the city of Cotabato. These three areas are covered by a state of emergency that includes police checkpoints and a significant military presence, where travel may be restricted. On Nov. 23 in Maguindanao, 57 people were massacred in a political feud.

Toyota recalled there cars in US, Europe and China

Do you have a Toyota car? It's time to check if your new Toyota is one of the cars that Toyota company is recalling because of some defects. At least the company is honestly accepting there mistakes and is taking control of the issues.

Toyota has announced the recall of vehicles in the US, Europe and China over concerns about accelerator pedals getting stuck on floor mats.

The firm has announced plans to recall 1.1 million more cars in the US a day after saying it was suspending sales of eight popular US models.

According to an application to China's quality control office, it wants to recall 75,552 RAV4 vehicles there. That's a lot of Rav4!

Toyota also announced 750 jobs could go at its Burnaston plant in the UK.

The positions would be lost before August.

"[Last year] was a tough year for Toyota Manufacturing UK," the carmaker said.

"This decision is related to production capacity and efficiency, not to production volumes."

Toyota said no decision had been taken about how the jobs would go, but added that it was not currently considering compulsory redundancies.

Investor concerns

Toyota wants to recall the RAV4 vehicles in China from 28 February.

The cars in question were manufactured between 19 March 2009 and 25 January 2010 in Tianjin, according to a notice on the website of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China.

The specifics of the recall in Europe have yet to be decided.

Colin Hensley, general manager of Toyota's European operations, said the carmaker was trying to establish how many European models shared the parts used in the cars recalled in the US.

Last week, the world's largest carmaker recalled 2.3 million cars in the US with faulty pedals.

It has now recalled almost 8 million cars in the US in the past four months. What you think about these numbers?

Last November, it recalled 4.2 million cars because of worries over pedals getting lodged under floor mats.

"Toyota's remedy plan is to modify or replace the accelerator pedals on the subject vehicles to address the risk of floor mat entrapment," the company said.

The latest recall affects five models in the US: the 2008-2010 Highlander and the 2009-2010 Corolla, Venza, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

Toyota shares fell a further 3.9% in Japan, after dropping 4.3% on Wednesday, as concerns about the impact of the recalls on the carmaker's financial health and reputation gripped investors.

"It is still uncertain how this recall problem will affect Toyota's profits. But investors are worried it could really pressure the company's overall earnings," said Masatoshi Sato at Mizuho Investors Securities.

What do you think now about Toyota? Well, Toyota have been performing well over this past few years and I think they will learn from these mistakes that they are facing now. I for one believe that Toyota can still manage to resolve this issues and can still hit the sales after.
