Beyond Wax

With the advent of low-cost 3-D printers, more jewelry makers and designers are now working with resin-based models. Are you ready?

By Shawna Kulpa

You’ve been doing this for years. A wise and grizzled expert, you’ve been casting wax jewelry models since the Eisenhower days. But lately you’ve been getting more and more calls from jewelers investing in these so-called 3-D printers, creating models from this plastic-like resin material. The price of these machines is so low that now every mom-and-pop jeweler and hobbyist can afford one and has started growing their own models. Heck, some of them are even printing models right on their kitchen tables! But now they have to have their homegrown models cast—so they contact you, trusting in your years of experience. Send it in, you tell ’em. After all, how different could casting this resin stuff be from wax?

Turns out, quite a bit.

“I always tell people there’s a reason they call it lost-wax casting and not lost-resin casting,” says Linus Drogs of Au Enterprises, a contract caster in Berkley, Michigan. For jewelry makers, he says, “our systems, our temperatures, all of our processes, they all revolve around casting wax.”

That means that whether you cast others’ designs, like our grizzled veteran above, or have invested in a 3-D machine of your own and now need to make it work, you need to take a different approach. If you do, and think about casting in a new way, you’ll be able to have just as much success with resins as with wax. If you don’t, then get ready, because resins are not forgiving.

“They’re like a bunch of gang members waiting out in a dark alley for you,” warns J. Tyler Teague of JETT Research in Johnson City, Tennessee. “They will kick your butt in a minute.”

Getting Started
Perhaps the best way to begin a discussion about these resins is to define what we really mean by “resin.” Drogs notes that it’s unfortunately become something of a catch-all term: “Many jewelers think that if it’s not wax, it’s resin, and that all resins are alike.” The problem, he adds, is that they’re not all alike, and to treat them as such can lead to bad castings.
So to be specific, when we say “resin” we typically mean a liquid material that’s solidified by light—what chemists call a photopolymer. This material is particularly prevalent among the new lower-cost systems that, over the past few years, have been spreading CAD/CAM technology to jewelry makers at all levels. (See “The Build Up,” Nov. 2012, MJSA Journal.) It should also be noted that not all 3-D printers use a photopolymer. Some—most notably those produced by Solidscape, as well as the latest versions of the Projet CPX printers by 3D Systems—instead work with either real wax or a proprietary compound specially designed to mimic wax’s properties. As several experts have noted, these latter systems don’t have the issues outlined here, and are more closely in tune with traditional lost-wax casting.
The photopolymer, on the other hand, is definitely not wax. Not only that, the photopolymers themselves aren’t even the same: There is no one formula common to all 3-D printers. Rather, each one has, as Drogs says, it’s own “secret goo”—the proprietary ingredients that have been added to help replicate the lost-wax experience.
“Off-the shelf photopolymers can produce very crisp details, but these base formulas by themselves don’t cast well,” says Steve Adler of Portland, Oregon–based A3DM Technologies, a specialist in additive manufacturing technologies for precious metal products. “Most manufacturers of 3-D printers serving the jewelry industry have therefore added wax-like substances to the material to make it burn more readily.” It’s a delicate balance between adding enough wax to cast well, but not so much you lose crisp printing details, Adler says—and every manufacturer has its own way of achieving it.
As a result, each 3-D printer will have a photopolymer resin with its own particular needs—for instance, a burnout schedule for one may not work with another. “The first thing I ask a customer who is sending me a photopolymer model is what machine did it come from,” Drogs says. “Once I know that, I can adjust my process accordingly.”
And that’s the key: adjustment. While the specific differences may vary by degree—some formulas may lead to easier direct casting, for instance—all of the photopolymers do require some accommodations from the caster. It’s just a matter of knowing how each resin differs from casting wax, and then proceeding accordingly.
Resins Versus Wax
So what are some of those differences, and their special requirements? Unlike wax, which is ready to cast fresh off the mill, photopolymer resin models are cured as they’re built layer by layer. However, the models are only partially cured by the printer, leaving parts of the resin still tacky. The models must therefore be cleaned with a recommended solvent, like isopropyl alcohol. Many are also then post-cured within a light box to make them suitable for investment. (Note: Check with your supplier to determine the best approach for your models.)
Unfortunately, depending on the geometry of the design, even a light box isn’t always enough to cure the photopolymer thoroughly. Tom Dougherty, owner of Studio 2015 in Woodstock, Illinois, uses a Digital Wax Systems (DWS) printer, and he learned this lesson through a lot of trial and error. Ultimately, Dougherty and his team found a way around this: “We bought a little tiny dehydrator for fruits and vegetables and use it to dehydrate the models.”
Other casters have found success by placing fresh resin models in ovens and using heat in order to finish curing them. (Adler does note that the heat and dehydration can sometimes lead to pattern shrinkage, and the piece should be measured afterward to make sure it’s still dimensionally stable and sized correctly. However, he adds, “we’re doing that same type of compensation in casting all the time, whether with wax or resin.”)
Resin’s special requirements continue into the investing stage of casting. “I first started out trying to cast it as it was advertised to me, that I could use my standard investment [with] regular procedures,” says Allan Beck, shop manager and custom jewelry designer at Simmons Fine Jewelry in Meridian, Idaho. “I have some beautiful photos of what happened. It looks like clinkers out of an old, coal-burning furnace, full of porosity and holes.”
While it is possible to use a regular gypsum-based investment, some casters have had the most success when they mix it at a lower water-to-powder ratio. Unlike wax, resins can expand quite a bit during burnout, so you need the investment to be strong enough to withstand this expansion.
“If the investment is not strong, the swelling of the resin can break and damage thin areas of investment, causing them to later fall into the mold cavity once the resin finally burns away,” says Teague.
According to Drogs, when casting resin models, ideally you want to use a low cristobalite investment system. “Something like Ransom & Randolph’s Plasticast [which was developed specifically for casting plastic models] is going to give you more strength so it is more resistant to expansion rate,” says Drogs.
Beck learned that firsthand after initially trying to cast resin using his regular Ransom & Randolph UltraVest investment. “Standard investment wasn’t hard enough to take the twisting and turning the models underwent during burnout,” he explains. This prompted him to make the switch to Plasticast. “I went to using Plasticast, and I mixed it with 36 parts water to 100 parts powder, which is stiffer than most people do.”
Alternately, some casters swear by using dental investments to cast resin models. That’s true of Taner Seyben of DMJ Casting in New York City, who uses it whenever he casts models with a lot of fine detail. “If I see something really difficult, I’d rather use dental investment,” he says. “It’s stronger, so I know it’s not going to break.” However, while dental investments can also sometimes yield a smoother casting, “they’re like concrete,” warns Teague, so “you better have a really powerful water blaster or a lot of time to pick off the investment, because it takes a while.”
Burnout is where the differences be-tween wax and resin really stand out. Unlike wax, which melts away during burnout, resin doesn’t melt, it combusts, and at a much higher temperature than a wax’s melting point. Because of this, it’s important that the burnout oven have a good air supply. This is typically not a problem with gas ovens, but electric ovens tend to suffer from a poor airflow. However, they can be modified. “We made modifications to our electric kilns,” says Dougherty. “We created openings in the top and bottom of the kilns that allow more oxygen into them.”
Another trick to increase air supply is to flip the flask over during burnout. Initially you’ll want to start burnout with your button down, so the wax from the tree and sprues can run out as it melts. Once you get up to 500°F/260°C to 600°F/316°C, where resins start to combust, flip the flask upside down.
“You can flip the flask over so the button is up and you’ll get maximum exposure to the available oxygen inside the oven to combust those resin materials,” says Teague.
Photopolymers, unlike wax, can contain acids if they haven’t been fully cured—and that can pose one more challenge during the burnout cycle. Those acids will interact with gypsum-based investments, leading to surface imperfections and failed castings. (For more about this, see “Direct Casting Photopolymer Resin Models” by Gary Dawson and Joe Strauss, a paper presented at the 2013 Santa Fe Symposium, santafesymposium.org.)
To prevent this, many casters will spray models with a light coating of a clear acrylic-based material, such as a Krylon fixative spray. This forms a barrier between the model and the investment, so that any interaction that might happen is prevented. In addition, it can also improve the resin’s finish.
“If you spray gently and lightly, you could actually fill in some of the grow lines that are present [on the model],” says Dougherty. “This is great for improving the external quality of your casting.”
One final note about burning out photopolymer resins: As noted earlier, not all resins are the same, and not only will the burnout schedule differ from that associated with lost-wax casting, it will also probably differ among the different resins. Always check with the supplier of the 3-D printer to obtain the recommended burnout times.
Back to the Beginning
In addition to all of the above, one of the best ways to avoid potential problems is to start at the beginning, and look at the design. Most casters agree that large items, such as a high school ring or a wide and flat pendant, are among the hardest things to cast, given resin’s tendency to expand. “They [resin models] press on the investment in one plane or direction,” says Beck, and that pressure can often result in the investment cracking. The larger the surface volume in a piece, the more likely it may cause headaches.
“Say you have a piece with a 10 mm cross section. Even if it only expands 2 percent, 2 percent of 10 mm is 0.2 mm, and that’s a lot when you consider that the investment doesn’t want to go anywhere,” explains Teague. “But if you only have something that’s 1 mm, 2 percent of that is 0.02 mm, so the investment won’t even notice.” Jewelers can improve their chances of a successful casting of large pieces by designing them so they can grow it hollow, with thin cross section bars supporting it inside.
That expansion also comes into play with lettering. If you have a model with long, skinny letters measuring up to 2 mm, it’s helpful to remember that just because you can grow it, doesn’t mean you can cast it.
“When you start the burnout and that resin starts to expand, you have all these little, skinny bits of investment between these 2 mm tall letters,” explains Teague. The expanding resin can crush those small bits of investment. Even if they do survive burnout, they still have to face molten metal rushing into the mold cavity.
“With tall, skinny lettering, the mold cavity is going to look like a series of skyscrapers. Now picture the metal rushing in. Those little skyscrapers are just going to get plowed down, leaving you with lettering that looks like crap,” says Teague.
How can you avoid this? Create smaller lettering. “You don’t need more than a height of 0.6 or 0.5 mm on lettering to be able to see it,” says Teague. In addition to not creating tall letters, the designer should also add a draft angle to the letters, making the top of the letters as wide as needed but tapering the width toward the base. Instead of creating skyscrapers in the cavity, the model will now create little Incan pyramids, which are better suited to handle the resin’s expansion during burnout as well as the subsequent rush of molten metal.
If you’re contracting out your casting, discuss all such issues with your caster—and listen to them. Some casters, for instance, recommend having designers divide up their designs in CAD and grow them as separate components to make them easier to cast. “I would always break out pieces,” says Dougherty. “I would always separate my heads, my shanks. I wanted to have pieces divided out so that I didn’t have any issues when I’m casting.”
And if you’re not contracting out your casting, then follow the old scientific method of observing and watching. “One of the most important things for me is that as I make changes when I’m trying something new that I’m very deliberate in what I do,” says Beck. “Don’t change a whole pile of things at once, and keep good records so that you know what it is you changed and how it affected things.”
Also, don’t be afraid to experiment. When Andy Andrews of Best Cast in River Edge, New Jersey, had problems with weak investment while casting resin models, he and his team experimented by tweaking the investment’s recommended mixing instructions. They adjusted their mixing speed, increased the bench dry time, and changed the water-to-powder ratio—and saw a significant increase in the strength of the investment molds.
“Had we continued to blindly follow the investment instructions to a tee, we would never have discovered the potential to do this,” says Andrews.
While casting resin models will require you to modify your long-held casting practices, you’ll soon adapt to this new world—and before long, you may even become an expert.

The 3 Key Steps to Becoming a Highly Paid Expert

Written by Jeff Bullas - 22 Comments

Categories: Blogger, Blogging, Publisher, Social Media, Social Media Marketing, Thought Leadership

Experts can come in all shapes, sizes and ages.

Elliot Baker is 14 years old and has a dream to become an expert food
writer and critic. He hasn’t waited to do a degree or gain a
certificate. He started a blog called “ayounggourmet.com“

He is publishing, networking and doing the work. He has also learned
how to attract attention. Just last week, his efforts gained him some
column inches in a national newspaper.

That is the power of self publishing and passion.

The advent of the social web where Google rewards the blogging expert who
is creating unique content with high search engine optimisation
rankings and online attention is one thing. Now you can create a blog
that adds value to people’s lives and the dream of fun, fame and fortune
can happen.

In a world where influence is moving online the blog offers a
platform to not only get attention but do something with those web
visitors. It is technology mixed with being human.

It’s time to take your blogging for blogging’s sake and turn it into a lucrative 3 step strategy.

Step #1. Publish

In the past becoming a “proper” expert was a formal process. Doctor, lawyer, engineer.

It was established entitlement or nothing. Your expert status was
handed down from on high. Do your degree, then a piece of paper will
declare you to be an expert in your field. But no longer do you have to
wait for the officialdom of peer review or a bureaucracy to anoint you.

The process of acquiring expert status has been democratised. Take your passion and let it shine online.

Blog your pants off.

Don’t hide your ideas in a filing cabinet, as a lingering thought or
inspiration lost in yesterday’s conversation in a coffee shop. No longer
do you have to wait for a book publisher to come knocking to put your
burning ideas on a world stage.

Write it down, speak to a video camera….publish.

Step #2. Promote

Publishing is one thing, then it is about becoming visible. The
visible and successful experts are the ones who dare to publish and
promote online. This stage is where the publisher becomes a marketer and
promoter. It is not time to be shy .

Its time to come out of the publishing closet.

You have picked yourself now it is time to let the crowd discover you so they can clap, cheer and encourage. Publish great insightful and inspiring content and let the crowd vote with “social proof”.

These include.

Retweets
Comments
Facebook shares and likes
LinkedIn shares
Plus one’s on Google+

Building this social proof does take time. It needs focused
attention. It requires persistence. You need to build followers on
social networks that will share, tweet and comment.

Social proof brings a certain credibility.

A blog with 20-30 retweets on its Twitter buttons….not bad. Start
pushing hundreds of shares per article then maybe you are an expert.

When do you become an expert?

When the crowd tells you. It is not just determined by passing an exam anymore. It
is a grey line of web votes. There is no finishing post. Just a visible
digital creeping credibility that is measured by views and data. They are the bloggers with passion and purpose.

The world crowd votes.

The people who matter now count. The one’s that have their lives,
businesses and careers changed because you took the time to learn,
publish and share. with them your knowledge. It can be an article, a
Powerpoint presentation on Slideshare or a video on YouTube.

It can be created in your office at home.

The tool kit and resource requirements

The expert who moves online will need to find the right tools and resources to create a blog that makes a difference.

Blogging skills
Content creation skills
Social media marketing
Email marketing
Search engine marketing

Need to find out more then here are some resources, to get you started or take you to the next level.

Step #3. Package

Now many of you have started. You have published and promoted that
content. To become that highly paid expert we need to take the next step
and productise that knowledge. It needs to be packaged.

You need something to sell.

In a digital age the cost of distribution of knowledge has dropped to
zero. No longer is it write, print and mail. It is create, publish and
download.

This step involves taking that knowledge, packaging into information products and creating multiple revenue streams

This includes.

Van Gogh’s True Palette Revealed

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Researchers say van Gogh painted the walls in his 1888 picture "The Bedroom" violet, not blue.

AMSTERDAM — “The Bedroom,” Vincent van Gogh’s 1888 painting, with its honey-yellow bed pressed into the corner of a cozy sky-blue room, is instantly recognizable to art lovers, with his signature contrasting hues. But does our experience of this painting change upon learning that van Gogh had originally depicted those walls in violet, not blue, or that he was less a painter wrestling with his demons and more of a deliberate, goal-oriented artist?

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

"Self-portrait," from 1887-1888.

These questions are raised by a new analysis, eight years in the making, of hundreds of van Gogh’s canvases as well as his palette, pigments, letters and notebooks by scientists at Shell, the oil company, in collaboration with the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency and curators at the newly renovated Van Gogh Museum here, which owns the world’s largest collection of works by that Dutch Post Impressionist.

The research did not lead to “earth-shattering new insights” that rewrite van Gogh’s life story, said the director of the Van Gogh Museum, Axel Rüger, but it could shift the understanding of van Gogh’s temperament and personality. The results of that study will be revealed in an exhibition, “Van Gogh at Work,” which opens on Wednesday and features about 200 paintings and drawings, 150 of them by van Gogh and others by contemporaries, including Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard.

“You discover more clearly that van Gogh was a very methodical artist, which runs counter to the general myth that he was a manic, possibly slightly deranged man who just spontaneously threw paint at the canvas,” Mr. Rüger said. “He was actually someone who knew very well about the properties of the materials he used, how to use them, and also he created very deliberate compositions. In that sense it’s a major insight in that it gives us a better notion of van Gogh the artist. He was very goal-oriented.”

By using an electron microscope and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, which reveals the parts of pigments without taking invasive samples, researchers found that early on van Gogh used perspective frames as a guide and drew on the canvas to correctly render proportions and depth of field in his landscapes. Later, as he gained mastery, he abandoned these grids. Like many artists, he reworked certain paintings repeatedly to perfect his desired effect. The most important insight was into his palette, said Nienke Bakker, curator of the show.

“We now know much more about the pigments van Gogh used and how they might’ve changed color over time,” Ms. Bakker said. “That’s crucial to our understanding of his works, and to know better how to treat them. The colors are still very vibrant, but they would have been even brighter — especially the reds. Some of the reds were much brighter or have completely disappeared since he painted them.”

Ralph Haswell, principal scientist at Shell Global Solutions here, which made its lab facilities and researchers available to the museum, said that at the turn of the 20th century artists had just started buying pigments off the shelf rather than mixing them in the studio. “One of the disadvantages of living in a very changing environment where pigments were very new was that they didn’t always know how things would turn out,” he said. “The chemical industry was growing hugely and they came up with all kinds of colors, but you never knew how long they would remain stable. Some pigments weren’t stable.” That was the case with van Gogh’s violet, used to depict the walls of his room in Arles. Because the red in the purple paint faded prematurely, probably even during van Gogh’s lifetime, it left behind only the blue with which it had been mixed.

That may have been fine with van Gogh, Ms. Bakker said, since the largely self-taught artist didn’t regard any of his work as final. He saw pieces as studies that helped him find his style.

“He wanted to express his individual way of seeing the world, and every work of art he made was moving him toward that goal,” Ms. Bakker said, “but he was never satisfied.”

The original hue — seemingly a minor change — presents a more soothing image, said Marije Vellekoop, head of collections, research and presentation for the Van Gogh Museum. The purple and yellow are “not a harsh contrast as we think of now,” she said. “That was something he wanted to express in that picture — tranquillity and a sense of rest.”

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
Correction: April 29, 2013
An earlier version of this article indicated that all three versions of the painting “The Bedroom” were created in 1888. They were created in 1888 and 1889. That version also referred to pigments available for sale at the turn of the 19th century. They became available around the turn of the 20th century.

A version of this article appeared in print on April 30, 2013, on page C1 of the New York edition with the headline: Van Gogh’s True Palette Revealed.

"Self-portrait," from 1887-1888.

A tenfold revenue increase in just three months - nanapi.jp's success story

Friday, April 26, 2013 | 10:00:00 AM

Labels: Case studies , International

nanapi.jp is a Japanese site which provides helpful tips for everyday life. From tips on romance to how to use web services, it has all sorts of advice for everyone.

Recently, nanapi started using AdSense and has seen a steady revenue increase. We spoke to Mr. Furukawa, the CEO, and Mr. Saito, the Director of Ads, and asked them about their experiences with AdSense.

■ Inside AdSense (IA): Please tell us the history of nanapi and how you built your site.
We established nanapi in September, 2009. We realized that there was a need for an information site where people could find tips for everyday life, so we decided to provide this content in the form of articles on various topics.

Initially, we only had a desktop site but now we’ve created a mobile site for smartphones too. As of August 2012, we receive 42 million page views and 9 million unique users per month. The number of unique users is bigger on the desktop site, but the smartphone site receives more page views.

■ IA: How and why did you start using AdSense?
When we first established the site, we decided not to implement ads as we wanted to focus on creating quality content first. After our number of monthly visitors reached 10 million, we implemented a medium rectangle (300x250) in the upper right corner of the site. As a result, we earned higher revenue than we’d anticipated.

We were surprised by the quality of the ads and how well they matched the content of our site. We’d been concerned that ads might damage the design or usability of our site, but we didn’t feel that way about the site post-implementation. That’s why we decided to use AdSense more.

■ IA: What results did you see after implementing AdSense?
We started to use AdSense more after the pilot in April 2012. More specifically, we switched from another ad network to AdSense, and increased the number of ads per page. Our revenue increased more than ten times in just three months!

nanapi covers a lot of topics, and it can be difficult to show relevant ads, but with AdSense's contextual targeting, relevant ads are shown automatically. People visit nanapi before they take action, and that's why it's natural for our visitors to click relevant ads and leave the site. We implemented 336x280 ads below our articles to capture this kind of user behavior.

■ IA: Did you have any issues after implementing Google AdSense?
We didn’t have any difficulty in implementing or setting up AdSense. Compared to the ad network we used before, AdSense’s account interface is easy to use. It was also very easy to implement AdSense on our smartphone site. We pasted the ad code from the account interface, just as we’d done for the desktop site. It’s very good that AdSense allows us to check performance by platform too.

As for resources, we only need one person to manage AdSense. The account interface is very easy to use. For example, when we experiment with changing an ad format, we can check its performance immediately.

We were concerned that ads would deteriorate the usability of our website. However, ad quality was very good and we didn’t have to worry. Since the ads match our content, they enhance the information on the site and we haven’t received a single complaint from our users

■ IA: Please tell us about your plans for the future.
We plan to keep adding more and more articles to our site. Our goal is to make users think that “if you visit nanapi, you’ll find answers for all kinds of topics.” From an ads perspective, we’re considering using DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) to manage our ad units more easily.

Understanding the dynamics of the AdSense auction - Part II

Thursday, April 25, 2013 | 9:10:00 AM

Labels: Earnings/Reports

Earlier this week, we started a two-part series to help you better understand the AdSense ad auction and how it helps you earn the most money possible. We shared how text and image ads compete in the same auction, and that our system selects either ad type based on the predicted value -- sometimes resulting in one image ad winning out over multiple text ads. Following on that discussion, today we’ll turn our attention to just text ads.

If you’re using one of our large ad unit sizes like the 300x250 medium rectangle or the 160x600 wide skyscraper, you may have noticed that you’ll sometimes see multiple text ads in the ad unit, while only one or two ads at other times. As we noted earlier this week, our system predicts the value of each competing ad for every impression, based on historic performance and comparison across a variety of scenarios. There can sometimes be cases where our system determines that one or two specific text ads are significantly higher-performing than the other eligible text ads, and that showing them separately would result in higher performance than if the ads were shown together with lower-performing ones. When this occurs, we’ll show them alone, and this means

CrownRing: Fit for a king and his queen.

The special moments in life that take your breath away are few and far between. That's why longtime friends Thierry Bellisha and Haimy Mann set out to celebrate these milestones by founding CrownRing in 1999: a collection of spectacular bridal jewelry that bring happily ever after to life. But what's in the name? The founders believe that when a couple gets married they are king and queen of their world, able to reign over their new life. Hence, the crown.

CrownRing designs several matrimonial jewelry collections offering both men and women wedding bands, engagement rings, anniversary bands, diamond rings and more options to honor the couple in love. This jewelry manufacturer is presently offering eight collections, each unique in design and style. From the "Bonbon Collection" that's made up of women's colorful wedding bands stackable for a personalized look to the "Alternative Metal Collection" that's made up of scratch-resistant men's wedding bands in metals such as tungsten, black ceramic and black cobalt.

Speaking of cobalt, CrownRing is the first and only wedding band manufacturer in the world to offer diamond-like carbon coating (DLC). The cobalt finish provides an incredible resilience to scratching and wearing, so this quality jewelry doesn't break, shatter or chip. The color doesn't fade either, making it possible for CrownRing to offer a lifetime guarantee with cobalt rings.

The innovation behind this jewelry maker doesn't end there. In 2002, CrownRing was one of the first companies in Canada to manufacture a collection of wedding bands in titanium, making it possible to offer a less expensive and lighter alternative to gold and platinum jewelry. CrownRing is also behind the popular "Carlex" brand. Launched in 2008, this men's wedding bands line has garnered much attention on a national and international level. Today "Carlex" sells in more than 100 retailers both in Canada and the U.S. In fact, The Platinum Guild International USA announced one of Carlex's men's wedding rings as a top favorite by retailers and editors, winning in the "Platinum Wedding Band" category at the JCK 2011 Platinum Innovation Awards.

Besides the precious metals that are CrownRing's core business, technology is at the forefront of this jewelry-making operation. In 2004, the founders bought the first piece of robotized equipment that allows them to use latest software to cut and polish jewelry. This allows them to be more efficient, precise and to customize orders within 24 hours. Today, they have more than five machines helping them keep up with growing demand in North America, Mexico and France.

For unmatched craftsmanship, design and comfort, CrownRing is today's jewelry of choice. From white and yellow gold to black and white cobalt, to diamonds and alternative metals, CrownRing's collections of jewelry has something for everyone to celebrate their special day.

China Goes Gold Crazy. Why Now?

Comment Now

Follow Comments

(Image credit: AFP/Getty Images via @daylife)

Spurred by a sudden drop in prices, Asians in the last two weeks have gone on a gold-buying binge. The Indians, the world’s largest net importers of the yellow metal, have been snapping it up of course, and so have the Japanese, now concerned about a falling yen and rising inflation. Hong Kong residents descended on the stores, but none have been so enthusiastic in stocking up on the commodity as Chinese from the Mainland.

Mainland Chinese purchasers have been ferocious. First, they emptied stores in their own country. Caibai, Beijing’s largest gold merchant, had a queue 30 feet out the door on the morning of the 19^th. “So many people in line,” remarked a customer in Nanjing, where one person splashed out 2.9 million yuan on ten gold bars each weighing a kilogram. Retailers ran out of stock in Guangzhou. The China Gold Association reported that on the 15^th and 16^th retail sales of gold tripled across China. Daily sales soared to five times the usual level at one retail chain.

Volume on the Shanghai Gold Exchange, considered a proxy for the metal’s demand in China, surged, setting consecutive records of 30.4 metric tons on the 19th and 43.3 tons on the 22^nd. The previous record was 22.0 tons on February 18 of this year.

As Chinese emptied the shelves in their own country, they also went south and swarmed shops in Hong Kong, sometimes in groups. Chow Tai Fook, the world’s largest jeweler by market capitalization, said some stores popular with Mainland Chinese ran out of gold bars and that demand had not been as strong since the late 1980s.

Demand for “9999” bullion—99.99% pure gold—was five times normal according to Haywood Cheung Tak-hay, president of the Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society. His organization effectively ran out of holdings as members tried to meet supply shortfalls. “In terms of volume, I haven’t seen this gold rush for over 20 years,” Cheung told the Financial Times. “Older members who have been in the business for 50 years haven’t seen such a thing.”

What’s behind the unprecedented surge in buying? Obviously, the Chinese took advantage of a dip in prices—the deepest since 1983—but they kept on buying as the commodity clawed back some of its losses.

Unlike the Japanese, they cannot be worried about a plunging currency. Nor can the Chinese be troubled by climbing prices. For one thing, the consumer price index has been signaling lower Chinese inflation in the months ahead. In March, the CPI increased just 2.1% from a year earlier, compared to a 3.2% rise in February. Of special importance were food prices, up 2.7% last month versus a 6.0% spurt the month before. In Q1, prices increased just 2.4%, about the same rate as the previous quarter.

Although Beijing’s CPI undoubtedly understates inflation, it nonetheless shows a general weakening of price pressure, something mirrored in the continually falling producer price index. Because China is still a manufacturing-based economy, the fall in the PPI means the country is actually suffering deflation. Producer prices fell 1.6% in both January and February and 1.9% in March.

A tumbling PPI is due in part to weakening commodity prices, but global prices are falling largely because of the stumbling Chinese economy. And that brings us full circle because gold prices plunged on the 15^th in part because China’s National Bureau of Statistics had reported that Q1 GDP growth came in at 7.7%, well below consensus estimates of 8.0%.

Moreover, the global sell-down on the 15^th—stocks took a beating too—would have been worse had analysts focused on Chinese electricity statistics, manufacturing indexes, and corporate results, all pointing to an economy growing not at 7.7% but in the low single digits.

It’s probably not a coincidence that the Chinese were the biggest buyers of gold in the last two weeks and, aside from North Korea, China has the most fragile economy in East Asia at the moment. The concern about the economy is evident throughout Chinese society.

Especially at the top. On Thursday, Chinese state media reported that the Politburo Standing Committee convened a special meeting to consider the economy. Normally, the body takes up economic matters only at fixed times, the beginning, the middle, and the end of a year. The last time it met to discuss the economy in an April was in 2004.

No wonder the Chinese are now stockpiling shiny yellow ingots, coins, and bracelets.

The 10 Happiest Cities For Young Professionals

The list of happiest cities for young professionals, compiled by career site CareerBliss.com, is based on analysis from more than 45,000 employee generated reviews between 2012 and 2013. Young professionals, defined by CareerBliss as employees with less than 10 years’ experience in a full-time position, were asked to rate ten key factors that affect workplace happiness, including work-life balance, one’s relationship with the boss and co-workers, the work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and job autonomy.
Here are the top 10 cities.

Planning to relocate or settle down? When you think about where you’d be happiest, Riverside, Calif., Philadelphia, and Phoenix probably aren’t the first places that come to mind. But as it turns out, these three cities are where some of nation’s most satisfied young professionals live and work.
That’s according to CareerBliss.com, an online career site that just released its list of the 10 happiest cities for young professionals, based on analysis from more than 45,000 employee generated reviews between April 2012 and March 2013. Young professionals, defined by CareerBliss as employees with less than 10 years’ experience in a full-time position, were asked to evaluate ten factors that affect workplace happiness. Those include one’s relationship with the boss and co-workers, work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and control over the work one does on a daily basis.
They then valued each factor on a five-point scale, and also indicated how important it was to their overall happiness at work. The numbers were combined to find an average rating of overall employee happiness for each respondent, and then sorted by location to find which cities had the happiest young employees.
“The new generation of young professionals not only finds happiness at work important–they demand it,” says CareerBliss chief executive Heidi Golledge. “If a company wants to find and retain the best talent, they need to work on building a culture of happiness within their organization.”
She says young employees tend to keep their résumés active on job boards just in case something more fulfilling comes along, and they are typically two to three times more likely than their parents to jump jobs for more career happiness. “In short, they take the right to pursuit happiness to heart and will typically not stay at a job with poor conditions for very long,” Golledge says. “They will even relocate to get out of an unhappy work environment.”
If you’re one of those young professionals looking to move to a happier place, you might consider San Jose.
Heading the list of the cities with the happiest young professionals, San Jose, Calif., earned an overall score of 3.94 out of 5. Workers there expressed the most optimism in ‘The People You Work With’ and ‘The Company You Work For’ categories, which scored 4.30 and 4.25, respectively.
Matthew Mahood, president and chief executive of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, says a lot of high tech companies in the area recruit and hire young talent. “They want the best and the brightest,” he says. “Many of these companies pay well for college graduates with degrees in math, science, engineering, software design, marketing, and analytics. Many start-ups, and even more established companies, have created a new work culture that is very relaxed—no set work hours, flexible work spaces, collaborative approaches, employee cafeterias, work out centers, etc.—so employees can spend a lot of time at the office and not feel like it’s all work, all the time.”
The California metropolis is home to several major corporations and universities, including Apple, Cisco, Intel, Samsung, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Oracle, HP, Yahoo!, IBM, Stanford University, the University of California at Santa Cruz, Santa Clara University, and San Jose State University, among many others.
“Life here in the Silicon Valley is exceptional,” Mahood adds. “There are lots of great companies to work for, and they are hiring. They pay well and the perks and benefits are good. We also have exceptional weather; beautiful parks; the ocean and mountains are nearby; theater; great restaurants and nightlife; a diverse culture; and a lot of beautiful little neighborhoods.”
Earlier this year, the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif. metro area ranked No. 1 on ManpowerGroup’s ranking of the best cities for jobs this spring.

Any city could be the right if the person is trained for happinees or prepared for it. Happiness can appear in the middle of the desert or in a crowded street, but we must seek for happiness although it may seem imposible. Hapiness is an state and could depend on where one lives or on what one lives or better it depends on what one is seen or reflected in his or her inside mirror.
