Just a word of explanation about the new community features on the left: I'm participating in a super-early-beta trial of Google's new feature Friend Connect, which will allow sites to easily build communities. You're getting a preview here. The features are still a bit glitch-y right now but I encourage you to try it out! Become a member and upload a list. "The Conference on World Affairs was founded in 1948, originally as a forum on international affairs. CWA expanded rapidly to encompass the arts, media, science, diplomacy, technology, environment, spirituality, politics, business, medicine, human rights, and so on. Roger Ebert, who holds a record of thirty-seven consecutive years of participation in the CWA, refers to the event as “the Conference on Everything Conceivable.”

Research IRAs

I'm posting this list today because I woke up in a panic this morning thinking, OMG, I have to research IRAs (in advance of tax season). I've found in my eight years of collecting lists that "taxes" are the second most common item to be repeated over and over again. Perhaps five times on average before they are crossed off. Any thoughts on why we need to repeat "taxes" over and over again on our lists? Why is this time of year so singularly anxiety-provoking? Even though I am not against the government, doing taxes and filling out these forms spurs thoughts in my head that the government is going to come hunt me down for a mathematical error. They have in the past, too, and although it was annoying to owe an additional $700 I lived to tell the story. . .It never killed me. But still, the whole process fills me with SUCH dread. I must write tazes over and over on my list with every step broken down in order to get myself to file by April 15 .

The Next List Slam: Bring Your To-Do List

The List Slam thing is becoming a true phenomenon. If there's anything I've learned recently, it's that people love to read their to-do lists out loud. And people also love to hear them. It's a fascinating dip into another person's daily life (or lifelong aspirations). I'm doing another List Slam with the very cool organization Girls in Tech, a group promoted to promoting camaraderie and connections among women in technology.

The next List Slam will be Wednesday, March 5, 6:30 pm - 9 pm at Adaptive Path, an interaction design firm, in San Francisco. In the spirit of Girls in Tech, I'll talk about not only the book, the lists, but also the publishing process for all you aspiring writers out there. What's Your Six-Word Memoir?

Tonight I went to a refreshingly brief reading. The Six-Word Memoir Slam to celebrate the release of Not Quite What I Was Planning: The Six-Word Memoir from Writers Famous and Obscure. My friends Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser, editors at Smith magazine, edited the book. It's most famously inspired by a six-word memoir by Ernest Hemingway, which some people call his greatest work: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

Larry and Rachel managed to get about 80% of the crowd to participate--mainly by incenting them with free drink tickets and by throwing Nerds candy at them for reading! Great tactic! Duly noted for the next List Slam I put on (March 5 at Adaptive Path Interaction Design Firm in San Francisco, where you too can read your to-do list out loud in public).

But back to the six-word memoir: What's yours? It's important to remember that your six-word memoir will be always-changing. The six words that capture your life tonight may be outdated in a week, and that's okay, you can just write a new one then.

Here are the ones that occurred to me tonight (which I did not read aloud):

Started holiday, never stopped promoting it

Jeans too tight, wore them anyway

Too many blogs, not enough time

Merged words, met some quirky souls

And on and on. . .

Leave six-word memoirs in the comments and check them on Smith.
