A new hearing device is now available for some hearing-impaired people. This device uses a magnet to hold the detachable sound-processing portion in place. The TOEFL Listening Section

The listening section comes right after the reading section, so it is the second task in the exam. This section tests the candidate’s ability to understand spoken english that is especially spoken in an academic setting. A good score on this section shows that the candidate, if awarded a seat in the university, would be able to listen to the classes clearly and understand the lessons. There will be about 6 tasks in the listening section, of which two will be long conversations and four will be lectures. All tasks require listening to a tape and answering questions that follow. There is a 10 minute time for answering questions of each task in this section.

Preparation Strategies

Practice Listening as Much as Possible

Listen to many sources to improve your English-listening ability. Watch English movies and channels, preferably without subtitles. If you have no other choice, then sit you’re your back to the television and listen to the dialogues. Try to listen to every word that is uttered. Doing this exercise for at least 10 minutes everyday for a month will imporve your listening skills. Channels that you could watch are National Geography, Discovery and Discovery Turbo. These have content that could be academic too, as those will be the kind of tasks asked during the exam. The more you practice, the better your listening skills will become.

Listen for the main idea

You can figure out the main idea during the beginning of the conversation itself. The speaker first gives an introduction and then discusses the details. Understanding the main idea will give you a heads up into what you may encounter in the rest of the conversation or lecture.

Build your vocabulary

While listening, try to guess the meanings of unfamiliar words from the context. This exercise is very important as the situation may appear while writing the actual test. That time you can try to guess the meaning of the words. Try making a habit of writing down unfamiliar words with their meanings and include these in your wordlist.

Practice note-taking

Candidates can take notes during all sections of the examination and this skill is especially useful in the listening section. It is impossible to remember facts and important points that were said just once. So, writing them down as the tape plays will help in scoring higher. About the TOEFL and Start Preparation for the TOEFL

If one wants to study in a foreign university, especially in a one that is in North America, one should take the TOEFL test. This test is only for non-natives and not for everybody as the university admission committee would want to check how good the non-native English speakers would communicate in English. Luckily the Internet has an ever expanding treasure trove of study materials, books and practice tests. Most of these websites require registration and payment for download but there are many sites that provide the material for free.

Before starting preparation, one must know what the test is and how to do well on the test. Understanding tips and tricks will make preparation and writing better. The Internet based test is easy to write too.

How to Start Preparation for the TOEFL

What one needs more than the language skills for this exam is the test taking strategy. One needs speed and efficiency to perform well on the exam. To perform well on the test, one should take a lot of practice tests and understand the preparation tips. Gathering all the test material, one can check how much time one needs for preparation by taking a diagnostic test at least 6 months before the test date. The TOEFL is just like most standardized tests has a particular format but also some traps that could mislead you into making mistakes. So, keeping them in mind, one should avoid the common mistakes to get a great score. The writing section of the TOEFL is challenging, but by practicing writing many essays on varied topics one can score well too.

The TOEFL iBT Test has 4 sections

4. Essay Writing

Measures the ESL student’s ability to express ideas in standard written English. Grammar and vocabulary is measured in this section.

TOEFL Scores and Cancellation of TOEFL Scores

The scoring in the TOEFL examination is very simple. Your scores reflect your performance in the exam. For obtaining an official score report, you need to complete at least one task in each section, i.e. the reading, listening and speaking and one essay in the writing section, failing which your exam will not be officially reported. For the iBT, you will receive via e-mail and post your test scores that are scaled in the following format,

1. Reading section : 0-30

2. Listening section : 0-30

3. Speaking section : 0-30

4. Writing section : 0-30

The total score would be the sum of the individual scores and not an average like the IELTS examination, so it will be on a scale of 0-120.

Scoring Method

TOEFL scoring is done both by human examiners and computers with automated scoring mechanisms. The two methods are employed to give an exact score based on the candidate’s performance that is directly related to his ability. Computers that are used in the scoring are good, but have some disadvantages too. They cannot measure the accuracy of the language perfectly and also the appropriateness of the content. The automated scoring is not always correct, it is sometimes not accurate. When humans grade the test, especially the writing section, the scores would be more precise, as they can grade the content, wide range of ideas and the structure of the essays.

In the TOEFL test, both automated scoring as well as human scoring is employed of the writing tasks. Proper scores can be obtained by taking into account both these ways of scoring.

Score Reporting:

The score for the TOEFL iBT is on a scale from 0-120. The score card that arrives by e-mail and post shows the individual scores of each section, namely the reading section, listening section, writing section and the speaking section, out of 30. They can be viewed on the ETS website after 7-15 days after the exam. The report will arrive by post another 15 days later. For sending the scores to universities to which you want to apply to, you can select them before the test. You can send scores officially to four colleges for free. You can select them by logging into the TOEFL website at least 24 hours before your exam. For additional score reports to be sent to colleges apart from those 4, each report costs $17, these can be done after writing the exam also.

Cancellation of TOEFL Test Scores:

After you finish writing your test, you will have an option of canceling your scores if you want to. If you feel you haven’t done the test well, you can choose this option. If you choose this, then your scores will not be reported to the universities that you selected. Even you cannot see them. In case, after canceling, you want to reinstate your scores, you can do so within 10 days of your test date by paying a fee of $20.

The TOEFL test measures the ability of potential students to read, listen, speak and write American English. 1. If you do not have a sound basic knowledge of English, it is best to take English language courses before taking a TOEFL preparation course. TOEFL exam preparation materials are designed to prepare you for the test. They are not designed to teach you English.
