Well, Sephora has now made making fancy nails a bit simpler with their new magnetic nail polish. But I do wonder if putting metal on your fingers and charging it with a magnet is healthy. This is one product you won't see tagged organic or natural. Oh the things we girls do for fashion. I have to admit the effect is pretty cool.

<![endif]-->
It’s no secret that my dog has an eating problem, or as I like to say, he has special needs. I was trying to break his habit of doing this bouncy dance accompanied by annoying whining when I walk in the door after work. Not because he’s happy to see me but because he wants to be fed. Then upon feeding him watch in horror as he stumbles about the room hyperventilating and pacing because he vacuumed up too much food in his craw and can’t swallow. Like I said, he’s all kinds of special. So I got him the slow down bowl that has huge eating obstacles designed to slow the eating process. After about a month using this bowl I found bloody marks on the eating obstacles. Being the worried furkid mom I am I immediately took to the internets for a better solution. Thoughts of being a bad mom and thinking Boo’s poor mouth! Sparing no expense to help my poor spoiled dog I got the Petmate Le Bistro auto feeder. Now dubbed the magic bowl.

The magic bowl was perplexing to my special needs dog at first because he didn’t know when it was going to spill out munchy goodness. He decided just sitting in front of it for long periods of time and staring directly at was going to get it to drop the goods. Luckily he figured out the timing schedule (a month later) and now enjoys portion controlled mini meals three times a day. It’s not only fixed his hyperventilating food problem but amazingly, instead of feeding him a bunch of food at once the spaced meals have shown improvement in his weight.

The magic bowl not only helped my poor neurotic dog, I’m not accosted with the whiny happy dance anymore. Yes it was extremely expensive for a dog food bowl (also considering I had to buy two since it seems my kids cannot “SHARE NICELY”, no matter how many times I yell that to their faces) it was worth it. They look healthier and on the plus side I can go on vacation for a weekend and not worry about them getting fed.

There are a couple of things to consider making this purchase though; here’s a list of cons I’ve found after using the product for 6 months:

1. Food size is a big consideration. You have to get kibbles that are evenly sized (better if they are all uniformity close to being round) and are not too large or too small for the small rotary array in the food dispenser.

2. Try refilling the container when you’ll be around for the next dispensary. I’ve found that just dumping the food in can cause the rotary wheel to lock up (too much pressure on it). Usually tipping it up and down will fix this problem.

3. Replace the batteries regularly. Even if they’re not bad try replacing your batteries every six months. Not doing so can slow down the rotary wheel and will make the timing go off randomly.

4. The dog will eventually learn that slapping the machine will produce one or two kibbles after it dispenses. Don’t worry, these machines are built tough. Mine’s been pounded on by the special needs dog a lot with no problem affecting the dispensing. This machine is not suggested to those with smarter animals i.e. cats. They will figure out how to sabotage the machine.

Does it look like you have wings?
I was lured in by the convenient meals and the promise of cake. Nutrisystem was pretty expensive to start out. I paid around $200 for my first “Basic Package” of meals. I was using the reasoning they claim on their site that you’ll save on groceries because you’ll have the meals instead. What they don’t tell you is that you’re still buying fresh vegetables and fruits to supplement your diet because the stuff they ship you in the boxes is sooooo tiny. (Also I was buying regular groceries for the Hubs because he didn’t want to diet with me.) The meals were tiny. Talk about an extreme portion control. The site claims the diet works on by utilizing the glycemic index but really it is extreme portion control and specific calorie intake.

At first the diet was new and exciting. Little color coded packages to eat with snacks and sweets for desert. It was fun for the first month and I lost about 5 pounds. So I ordered another month supply, this time picking my favorites out of the sampler pack I had the recent month. Then it lost its shiny new feeling and I’m out about $400. The food started getting really bland and I just didn’t feel like heating another thing out of a box. I wanted fresh and good tasting food. The meals were always the same kind of something in tomato sauce and it started getting repetitive. The stacks were good, but I always wanted more. The same with the bland meal packs, they always left me hungry. I thought that if I wanted to be hungry all the time I might as well eat fresh food in smaller portions and save myself some cashola.

All in all I lost a total of 9 pounds and as soon as I went off the meals, promptly gained it all back and 3 more pounds for good measure. I guess this diet would work if A) You lived alone or your partner does it with you, otherwise it’s just too expensive buying two sets of groceries and B) You have no taste buds and don’t mind the bland repetitiveness of the meals. Otherwise, save your money and invest in salads and low calorie foods and plan small portion meals throughout the day. You can accomplish the same thing without having it all pre-packaged for you.

In June I found myself in such a dilemma. See, I have an affinity for romance novels especially the historical ones. I got the craving for a good romance trilogy and found a book by Amanda Quick at the local grocery store. Unfortunately it was the second in the trilogy and everyone knows you can’t start a trilogy in the second book so the first book hunt began. I searched the big box store (only because romance novels are way cheaper there) with no luck. I tried the local bookstore, again, no dice. Any and all grocery stores, no, no and no. Where have all the trashy love novels gone?

Digital. They went digital and now if you want a book, like right this second, because we are in the instant gratification age, you can get one but you have to have a device to read it with. The question is which one? I am desperately, irrevocably in love with my iPhone so my obvious choice was the iPad. Unfortunately it was extremely expensive so I hemmed and hawed about it for a month straight.

The Hubs finally gave up at my persistent melancholy and got me a white iPad2 for my anniversary gift. I have not been able to put it down. Since July I have read over 6 books on this thing. It’s like magic. I can eBay, check my email, look up unimportant things on the internet while watching tv. It never leaves my side. Therefore my Hubs has deemed it my white whale. I still love reading a real book but once you go iPad you’ll understand its appeal. It is slim and easy to cart around and I can get any book anytime in 10 seconds or less. I’m also addicted to Heartwild Solitaire and can I just say, Netflix is even more awesome on a screen bigger than 3x5 (sorry iPhone).

I did look at other devices but found the following lacked:
Kindle – had buttons to navigate and only black and white.
Nook – can only get nook books on it (might not be the cheapest book)
iPad – can get Kindle books, Nook books, Google Books, iBooks and shop for the cheapest one. Plus I can do so much more like check twitter, facebook, email and surf the internets.

The iPad won out completely and I’m so happy with my white whale.

<![endif]-->
The HCG diet. I tried this diet for two months and lost 20 pounds. The diet consists of calorie reduction, portion control and supplements. The first three days you eat like a pig then you are constricted to a 500 calorie diet for the duration of the diet period. 26 days. You are also supposed to take HCG drops (three drops three times per day). Or you can up to pay big bucks and get HCG injected by your doctor. HCG is a hormone that is produced by women during pregnancy or during their menstruation time. The hormone and the extreme diet make you get results fast.

Who doesn’t want to see that they lost ten pounds in a week? Yeah, those drops may be the psychological factor but if you restrict anyone’s diet to just 500 calories a day anyone can lose weight even if you don’t exercise. Eventually though your body will get used to it and start storing anything over 500 calories as fat. It will also make you lethargic and mess up your hormones. This is what happened to me. On top of this drastic weight loss I was under tons of stress at work. So doing this diet was just one of the factors that lead me to being diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue. Now I have to take even more hormones and an ungodly amount of vitamins and minerals a day to fix what HCG has done to my body (all under the instruction and careful monitoring of my doctor).

Though the effects of the HCG diet did, in fact, make me lose weight the cost was extremely high to my health. This is an abnormal response to the diet as my girlfriend has done it on and off with no complications and my chiropractor swears by the stuff and recommends it to her obese patients. I on the other had had gained back the weight I lost (but no more than what I started out with) and am on a regimented supplement plan by my doc. Finding out clearly that this diet was just not for me and may not be healthy for those that need an ongoing weight management plan. It will help you lose those pesky five pounds fast and is an ok diet for short period weight loss or a weight loss booster to get you into a more regimented long term plan. You may want to forgo the drops though and just stick with the 500 calorie diet.

You can learn more about the HCG diet here.

Some may refer to my need to drool over CB2 and IKEA catalogs as compulsive fanatic behavior but I like to think I’m soaking in the design ideas (or mentally redecorating my entire house). So it’s when I stumble upon a website or post that I think to myself what the french toast? I must share this with the world.

This is one of those great design ideas that upon first glance I was like, yeah that’s pretty cool looking until my eyes traveled a little to the right on the site’s page and I saw that it was $331 usd or $230 pounds in the UK. My heart kinda stopped a little. This, for all intents and purposes, is a fleece piece of fabric that was folded and cut in snowflake pattern. We did this kind of stuff in school with felt and paper. Although it may look nice spread on a bed it still doesn’t even provide the one thing it was meant for, being a blanket, with all the large holes in it. But hey, who am I to stand in the way of contemporary design, oh yeah the mother fucking connoisseur that’s who! This is a great DIY project that you can do and have yourself $331 worth of snowflake fleece blanket. By the way printed fleece is about $11 for 1.5 yards at the big box store. Go forth and create beautiful contemporary design DIY style.

The problem is that I didn’t have any hair products to showcase my perm to its permiest. My curls were all over the place. They flounced out and didn’t make the nice ringlets that I wanted but instead was this tangled mess of discombobulated hair. I wasn’t looking for anything too chemically since I already bombarded my hair with color and perm and didn’t want to kill it while maintaining its beauty. I searched high and low and purchased the following organic moose to try out:
Kiss My Face – Summertime
Samy E-Sen-Cia Styling Moose Pomegranate Marshmallow
Giovanni Organic Styling Moose

I started first with the Giovanni Organic Styling Moose which claimed that it made your hair even healthier after use. I don’t know if it did that or not but it formed my curls without making my hair stiff and held all day. The smell was pleasant and the aerator on the bottle did a wonderful job of making the moose stiff, airy and easy to apply.

Next I tried the Kiss My Face – Summertime fragranced styling moose. It did an ok job holding my curls but if you use too much it can defiantly make your hair crunchy. What bothered me the most about this moose was the smell. Summertime to them = canned orange soda gone bad smell to me. Not good Kiss My Face, not good at all. Plus the bottle aerator needs improving. It dispenses a half puffed and watery moose.

The last moose I tried was the Samy E-Sen-Cia Styling Moose Pomegranate Marshmallow. I’ll tell you the truth, I only purchased this because it had marshmallow on the label. Who doesn’t love marshmallows? Though it also said it was only 99% natural so it’s like borderline organic. I don’t know what the 1% is that is holding it back but I tried it anyway. This moose smells like black licorice which I enjoyed a lot since I love black licorice but confused me since I was expecting a sweet (marshmallow) pomegranate smell. It holds curls well and they are soft all day. The only thing that kind of put me off this moose was that when applied it kind of feels soapy. The aerator could also use some improvement. Not as watery as the Kiss My Face moose but still not stiff like the Giovanni moose.

All the moose I purchased was in the $7-$9 range per bottle. I really liked the Giovanni moose (which I found available locally at my CVS) and will probably stick with that as my daily routine but in a pinch I’d use the Samy moose. My curls are happy and my hair feels healthy and not weighed down. So if you’re on the look out for some organic hair moose I hope I helped you choose the right one.

Come on, look at it and is that not the cutest tire swing you’ve ever seen?! And that’s not all. When I took a look inside the store (which mostly sold hammocks) I saw this:

It's a parrot made out of a tire and spray painted. You could possibly fill them with seed and make a bird feeder out of them or water to make a bird bath or make them planters. Or just hang them in your yard because they are the cutest. I have an old tire in my back yard that we found on our property. I’m going to see if the Hubs can make a parrot for me. While searching for cutout plans I found this great site that sells these awesome green swings. A Netbook is a mini version of a laptop only it has no internal CD drive or the processing speed of a normal laptop. In trade you get a more compact and lighter pc. I liked this laptop that I purchased from Buy.com for $366. Not only was it cheaper than a full sized laptop but it comes in all different kinds of colors. I chose the red and it is very chic. The only problems I’ve had so far is that it comes with Vista. Anyone who has Vista knows what I’m talking about. Windows Vista is extremely slow and really not designed for slower processors which the Netbooks are based on. This netbook came with 250GB hard drive capacity which in my research so far is the highest I could get in my price range without spending more than $500. It also has 2GB standard memory unlike the others I found that only had 1GB. The 11.6” screen is also larger than those I could get in the same price range. The only reason this one was a bit more than those you see on sale at Amazon for $299 is because it comes with a 6 cell Li-ion Battery which lasts over 7 hours. The whole point of Netbooks is to have “mobile” computing so when purchasing remember to always check the cell. 3 cells will only last about 3-4 hrs. Since purchasing I’ve learned Acer is going to be introducing a 9 cell which I’ll be upgrading when it comes out. Along with the Windows 7 when that comes out also. Don’t expect your netbook to totally replace your laptop. Like I said your trading some processing power for the light mobility netbooks provide so the processor is going to go slower than a regular laptop. If you have some light computing to do and want to stay connected on the move this is a good choice in netbooks.

This to my dismay may cause “The Bloat” that can kill your pup. So I searched and searched online and found the Break-Fast Dog Bowl. This bowl is way over priced for what you get. For $35 I could buy a gourmet dining set for the dog. But, I went with puppy mother instinct and on behalf of the reviews purchased the steel version of this bowl. The reasoning is because the other cheaper, plastic versions looked too much like a dog toy and I could just see my dummy dog trying to play with it or worse easily flip it over to get the food out. The bowl essentially does what it claims; it slows down the eating of the food, what they don’t tell you is that it slides around which I’m told was in design to further slow food consumption. I find it down right irritating to find that bowl pushed every which way. I once found it pushed under my couch. So my Hubs purchased an oversized O ring and slipped it around the bottom to stop the sliding. The other thing I don’t like about this bowl is the mess. The dog literally slobbers all over it trying to get the food and I find I’m washing this thing almost daily. It does slow down his eating time and unfortunately there are not that many options to choose from besides this bowl. I found some industrial farm kind of feeding bowls but nothing in common dog size except this one. So I guess I’m stuck with it until the pet industry comes out with something a little more advanced and hopefully more aesthetically eye appealing.

Luckily I took out some Cornish game hens early to defrost and was going to whip up a proper meal. (Plus they were the only thing left in the freezer. I really have to go shopping soon.) It was a little bit of a learning curve using these knives as unlike the traditional knives I use these have a kind of scalloped edge almost like a bread knife edge and I was used to flat straight edges. I thought this might make for a more jagged cut but I was completely wrong. These knives cut through everything I needed to season my dinner in no time flat.

And of course you knew I had to try this:

It didn’t affect the cutting edge at all.

But what surpassed all my expectations is when I had to cut the game hens in half (usually a great chore with my old knives). I was so surprised at how easy these knives cut through bone and cartilage without even slowing them down. Seriously it was like cutting butter. I’m so going to enjoy using this set on all my culinary adventures. I was on the search for a lunch box. Not your typical lunch box but a reusable, waterproof, and snazzy lunch box. I also need one kind of slim and ended up getting a lunch bag instead but check out this lunch bag.

Is it not the cutest thing ever?! It’s lined with waterproof material so if my lunch kinda leaks a little it won’t get all over everything in my TH bag which is the reason why I picked this lunch bag. Also they have these little snack packs that have Velcro enclosures (I got one of these too) that matched my bag and are just too adorable. And if my lunch leaks in my lunch bag I can just throw it in the wash. And the best part is that this is a green item I can use over and over again.

Before you get all, “what you bought cookware for your husband?!” I just want to point out that the Hubs has been stretching his culinary wings lately but our sad $20 for a box of cookware bought 4 years ago just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Boy, did I get a shocker shopping around for cookware. Some sets I looked at were starting at $500 a set. I know the Hubs wanted to steer clear of the Teflon (that’s what we had then) because he wanted to be able to bake in the pans also, like those cooks do on Food Network. Finding a set that was A) Teflonless B) able to be put straight in the oven C) Wasn’t too girlie/old looking*, took some research.

Yeah, you could say that Rachael Ray’s set with the orange handles is a little girly but it was the cheapest and all the reviews said it was a good set for the price.

So we had the set for a while and I decided to make soup in the stock pot and found that the handle rivets leaked. Curious, I took out all the pots and pans and filled them with water. Two pans and the stockpot leaked where the handle rivets were. Since these were covered under a warranty I tried to find the warranty info. which we so cleverly threw out with all the Christmas wrapping paper. Finding any information online was like wading through murky water. Finally the Hubs happened to find a flyer that came with the set and in small print it had the name of the distributor. So contacting them we finally got someone to help us. They said they would send replacements but when the replacements arrived they accidently sent us the Teflon coated pans instead of the stainless steel. Eventually they got it right and we got non-leaking pans and a pot.

The warranty company was very accommodating and we had no problems getting replacements (the right ones eventually) and I have to say that for the price these pots and pans do a great job. They are easy to clean and heat up nicely and evenly. A great value for the price.

*Seriously, have you seen these Paula Dean ones? They have “Grandma lives here” written all over them.

However, we'll still
link
you to the file.

Hoover FloorMate. What a concept! A vacuum and mop in one. I’ve owned my FloorMate for 2 years now and I just love this thing. I have two dogs that track red clay mud in and out of the house constantly. And talk about the hair. Dog hair everywhere and the genius that built this house put white linoleum in the kitchen. The FloorMate allows me to vacuum and mop at the same time. I just vacuum up all the dirt and hair then push the little button and start spraying away. The little scrubbers on the front get that red clay dingy dirt up in one to two passes. No more bending to scrub the floors. Or soapy water mess with mopping. This thing also cleans up spills in no time flat. The FloorMate works not only in my kitchen but all through the livingroom and hallway that has wood laminate flooring and I don’t have to worry about the flooring buckling due to using too much water because the FloorMate sucks it up as it cleans and dries your floors very quickly. I highly recommend this for anyone who has a busy life and high traffic areas and wants to clean them quickly.

A Sephora gift card. But since I’m a procrastinator and couldn’t get my timing correct I ended up getting her something else instead and now I’m stuck with this gift card that, of course, came the day after her bday. So what a better way to promo my new site but to give it away. Here’s the deal:

To enter leave a comment here stating a product you really like (can be anything), make sure to use a valid email address so I can get a hold of you if you win.

Tweet this giveaway and get an extra entry. Make sure to leave a comment below or add @toesfootnotes to your tweet to let me know.

Or post this giveaway on your blog. Make sure to leave a comment below that you posted.

That’s it. Pretty simple right?

Winner will be picked by random number generator.

You have until 12 midnight PST on Tuesday 8/4/09 to enter because Wednesdays suck and what a nice pick me up but to be notified you won something on Wednesday.

Prize: $25.00 gift card to Sephora in a stylish gift/mirror box.

My vacation all wrapped up in a pretty bow. This wonderful production was made with some easy peasy clicks of the mouse. It took less than 10 minutes to add my pictures, pick a template, add text and publish. This wonderful product was made with Wondershare Flash Gallery Factory, a great product that not only makes slideshows in a few simple clicks, it also makes great galleries for your website. Not only does it do all that but you can make your wonderful productions into screensavers for your computer. What more could a geek like me ask for? This program was also pretty cheap at only $49.95. This program is so easy to use. I hate programs that have such a high learning curve that an hour later you’re still trying to figure out how to add sound or an effect. This program made it so simple to plop in photos, add sound or pick from the many transition effects or templates already loaded. Not only is this great for personal photo albums but would make a great business gallery. It even has 3D gallery effects. Sit back and enjoy my vacation montage.

I don’t really like original Febreze smell, I preferred the spray that Downy came out with for fabrics. It had a nice soft Downy smell to it and made everything smell like it just came out of the dryer. Unfortunately, I could not find Downy’s fabric freshener at the store any longer so decided to give Febreze one more go. I purchased the three pack of the home décor selection. These sprays were different from the bulky blue bottle I’ve used in the past and I was so surprised at the new smells they had come up with. My favorite is the Lavender & Vanilla scent but all of them are wonderful and not too overpowering. They got the job done and instead of smelling sweaty dog when I come through the door, I now smell a fresh field of Lavender & Vanilla. I use this all the time now. It’s a great product. Way to go Febreze!
