Though posting a bit late, Togetherness Supreme won Best Feature Film at the just concluded Verona African Film Festival.

The festival had this to say about the film:

The film offers a very powerful story set in Kenya, but that probably reflects the problems of the whole Africa. Plunges us into the lives and emotions of the inhabitants of Kibera as they are in reality. It's very well shot, with an excellent cast and a gripping story, well told.

Togetherness Supreme wins at ZIFF 2011

Producer Mercy Murugi, who is in Zanzibar for ZIFF 2011, has just told us that Togetherness Supreme has won the Silver Dhow. This is great news, congrats to the cast and crew.

The Jury described it as a “remarkable, vibrant feature film of high technical skill and creativity” depicting a difficult and troubled period in the history of Kenya.

Mercy also told us that the film was invited to a premier African film festival in Verona, Italy. One of the jurors is part of the festival committee.

We hope that this will also continue to give a boost to our goal to show the film broadly across Kenya leading up to the 2012 elections and be part of the dialogue for peace and reconciliation.

Togetherness Supreme is a brilliant milestone in contemporary African film making. Using latest camera technology, local acting talent and the support of the people living and breathing in Nairobi's sprawling 1Mio people Kibera slum, it sensitively and knowledgably portaits the story of one courageous young man's experience as he gets caught up in the 2007 post-election violent outbreaks in Kenya. Filmed entirely on location and peppered with a not too soapy episode of youth romance and loyalty, the film captures many an aspect of life in the slum, from it's main characters of unsuspecting youth being indiscriminately used as puppets and gunfodder by power hungry politicians, to the street child depending on random acts of kindness in order to stay alive, and the older generation suffering from aimlessness, lack of purpose and alcohol abuse. Following th storyline with bated breath and viewing "between the lines", the film weaves in glimpses into the incredible resilience, creativity, sense of community and sheer will to survive with dignity in an environment that is inherently hostile and unsupportive towards the human condition - Togetherness Supreme!

With the potential to become a hugely beneficial educational tool in preventing further atrocities in the looming 2012 presidential elections, the film deserves not only heartfelt salutations to it's makers and amazing actors, but it's very existence is a tribute to the people of Kenya and their vast untapped potential which is just waiting to be set free.

Togetherness Supreme

The age-old juxtaposition of idealism versus grim reality sets the tone in this film shot in the slums of Kibera, Kenya. What this long métrage reflects in such a microcosm is the fact that as humans, no matter where we are on this planet and what our economic condition, we all face the same skewed principles in life.

Togetherness Supreme presents us with the question: Can hope and reasoning prevail, even in the most difficult of economic and moral conditions?

Our main character, Kamau, confronts this very dilemma in the first five minutes of the movie (which ramps from 0 to 60 in no time!), when he encounters a young friend who is almost killed by the irrational circumstances following a freak car accident. During those first minutes, we go from mere spectators of life in Kibera, to finding ourselves in the driver's seat of a fast changing environment (thanks to the gritty cinéma-vérité style and high shutter speed imposed by very colorful DOP Andrew Njenga Munga).

Cleverly, our main character Kamau (Wilson Maina) always succeeds in his quest to find a peaceful balance within the convoluted living conditions -- even when confronted by his counterpart Otieno (Geoffrey Jefferson), or against his tribal enemies. The political campaign where TS develops, also serves as a framework for the different stories of, love, passion, intolerance, corruption and finally, chaos.

Kamau is as convincing and cool as his antagonist Otieno (a sort of a charismatic Robin Hood of the slums and the self appointed director of a corrupted political campaign). Together they bring the story to the right climax. Kamau, always the idealist and the optimist, seems to be a fish-out-of-water in the slum. On the other hand, Oti is charming and intelligent and you can't help but like the guy, even with his dubious antics and clear material aspirations. A very fragile loyalty and a strong message of hope remain the catalysts with this unlikely pair, even when it comes to dilemmas like choosing the same girl or seeing through their tribal differences.

TS succeeds in telling us that the variables are no different in Kibera than in New York; that there is either a Kamau, or an Otieno, in each one of us. We can choose to positively change, or remain inert watching the world crumble around us. Fortunately for us, director Collett remains an optimist to the very end.

The movie is colorful and fast. The fantastic digital cinematography reminds us of Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire. I personally loved the high shutter speed and moving camera that made me feel I was inside the action. Director Collett drives the story well, and the actor interaction throughout the film is superb. Considering the conditions in which this movie was made, I have to applaud the visual achievement. It will keep you glued to the screen.

Look past the very colorful titles and let the music, the visuals and the story take you to a new world of action and progressive cinema. One which can only come from the heart of this African nation.

We are extremely excited by the reception the film has gotten here in Northern California. Not only was the screening theater almost full at the first screening on March 5th at Camera 12 at Cineqest in San Jose, we have now had the film reviewed on Huffington Post by Ruth Starkman, who teaches ethics and political philosophy at the University of San Francisco. She is the author of two books and numerous articles on film, literature and philosophy. She writes on education and university life and is completing a new book on the topic.

Unlike the Brazilian film however, this film from Kenya portrays a slum that never seems to have had wide-open spaces before it turned into a shantytown with a looming garbage pile full of human and animal scavengers and 14 different villages teeming with tribal tensions and political unrest. Moreover, the turf war isn't over drugs, though there are a couple scenes of the disaffected hero, Kama and his rival Oti smoking marijuana and praising Bob Marley. This film is about tribal tensions and the challenges of a new generation in Kenya.

Togetherness Supreme wins Best Int'l Feature Film Award at Santa Barbara Int'l Film Festival

Togetherness Supreme has won this years Best International Feature Film Award at the 26th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. A reviewer described the film '...a street level vantage point of the Kenyan political riots of 2007, TOGETHERNESS SUPREME captures the color and atmosphere of the culture. It is a drama full of startling authenticity, made with local in key roles behind and in front of the camera.' You will remember that in October 2010 in our screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Togetherness Supreme was described as 'Africa's slum dog without the millionaires.'

Commenting on this years festival programme, the SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said, “This year in particular, I have been incredibly impressed by our film lineup. Each of the films possessed their own unique quality, creating one of the most diverse and interesting programs yet.”

Producer Mercy Murugi and Director Nathan Collett were present to receive the award.

"The response from the audience who came for the screening was overwhelming. We held over half an hour long Q&As after the screening, with the audience asking very insightful questions. They wanted to know more about Kibera, about the work that we do with the youth and the community, about Kenya and the issue of tribalism." Says Mercy. "We had a total of three screenings. The first two were almost full house, but we did not attend the last screening."

There were films from Italy, France, Belgium, Uganda, and UK - some that had screened in Venice, Cannes, Toronto and other famous festivals,” said Nathan.

'We honestly had not expected the award', adds Mercy. 'We went to the screening of various films which had full theaters. There was even a list of 41 films to watch, and our film was not one of them. Even First Grader, a feature film shot in Kenya soon after we shot ours, was in that list."

We are excited that the work of the Kibera community and the Kenyan professionals that we worked with is being recognized internationally. It has been a huge celebration at the Kibera Film School following the announcement of the Award.

Kevin Machimbo, a recent graduate from the Class of 2010 at the Kibera Film School posted this on this reaction on Facebook, after the win was announced "Now that motivates me to continue doind(sic) filmmaking"

In as much as the Award is an affirmation that there indeed is talent and stories from urban slums, it is also a motivation to achieve even greater things for our youth.

The International Criminal Court on 15 December 2010 announced indictments against six prominent Kenyan political figures for their involvement in the post-election violence following the December 2007 presidential election.

“This is a different kind of case,” Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the court’s chief prosecutor, said of the accusations. “This isn’t about militias. It’s about politicians and political parties. It’s about investigating leadership.” Mr. Moreno-Ocampo added, “This isn’t just about justice. For Kenya, this is survival.”

Togetherness Supreme, explores the tribal tensions and on-the-ground political campaign leading up to the election through the lives of three young residents. It’s based on a true story.

The cast, most of the crew and all of the crew trainees were from Kibera. Witnessing the positive effects on the individuals, and the economic boost to the slum, Nathan Collett and producer Mercy Murugi decided after wrapping Togetherness Supreme to set up a film school there.

They’ve also been showing the film at community screenings in slums throughout Kenya, where the reaction has been extremely positive, and gratifying.

“What people always say is: ‘No, no this film wasn’t made here. Who made this film? This wasn’t made by Kenyans. This was not made by slum people.’” Collett said from Nairobi. “When they [realize] that a person like them could do something like this, and that they had the talent within them, that is an exciting concept.”

The Kenya Museum is holding their annual Know Kenya Course between Mon 4th - Fri 8th October at the Leakey auditorium. Features include:interesting talks, fun guided tours, performaces and lots more.

On Thursday 7th October from 12:45 p:m ,the Director and Producer of Togetherness Supreme will give a special talk on what went on behind the scenes of the making of this unique award winning feature film.
