Abe Hiroe (阿部裕江) Installation at Kobo (巷房) - (2016/07)

2016-07-21T06:48:00.000-07:00

This installation (2016/07/18-23) by Abe Hiroe (阿部裕江) at Gallery Kobo (巷房) was very nice in both overall effect and in details. The artist painted each individual picture at the location of the picture onto washi paper and then painstakingly constructed the hanging artwork with beach driftwood, shells, and other items collected from the area. There was also a (separate) interesting slide show with more objects in the under-stairs display space.

I've always thought people should have more courage when buying bags and look for things that are original and to their own personal tastes - rather than buying the mass-produced "brand"... stuff. This is a great example of someone providing one-off bags - each and every bag is an original one-off utilizing vintage clothing.
An interesting concept I hadn't heard of before is that this artist/designer will incorporate someone's own old clothing into a bag - which is a really cool way of continuing to use old familiar clothing that can't be worn any more for whatever reason (changing fashions, wear, etc.). After being designed, the bags are sewn in Kyoto. The artist/designer explains in the above video (in Japanese).

Sakuma Kyoko (佐久間香子) Exhibition at Art Space Rashinban (アートスペース羅針盤) - (2014/04)

2014-03-19T12:19:00.000-07:00

This nihonga (and watercolor) exhibition (2014/03/17-22) by Sakuma Kyoko (佐久間香子) at Art Space Rashinban (アートスペース羅針盤) consisted of (mainly) a striking set of nihonga paintings, with a few nice watercolor paintings in the small side room. As with the 2012 exhibition I saw by this artist, the pictures were very realistic looking and beautiful. [Video / 動画]

佐久間香子展 / アートスペース羅針盤

この日本画の展示会は、DM絵葉書（と写真と動画）のような絵でした。とても、自然とレアルな美しい絵でした。

The third picture above is much more striking and vibrant in person - the contrast between the bright silver at the top and the darker green at the bottom is beyond what the camera could capture. Take my word for it that it's a very beautiful picture!

"Kiki Live in Hamamatsucho - Summer 2013"

2013-09-23T22:55:00.000-07:00

As always, I enjoyed Kiki's once-a-month performance in Hamamatsucho. I've mentioned them in this blog before, but I've never taken the time to write my impressions of the band in any detail. So to address that gap, here goes.

I was initially attracted to the band by the sound of the singer's voice drifting across the street one windy day as I approached Hamamatsucho Station on my way home from work. I walked over and had a listen, and since then, I've watched and listened to the band closely several times at the Hamamatsucho venue. To divide my impressions into two main parts, first, the band as a whole, and then, a look at the individual members. Normally I wouldn't even attempt to comment on individual members, but sitting right in front of the band several times, I've been able to have a good look (and listen) so... Anyway, first, the band as a whole:

To put it simply, I find them to be a tight band, playing carefully and with smooth harmonies. They mostly play original songs, which I tend to prefer over other musicians' songs, although they also perform songs from outside the band from time to time.

Kiki (2-5) Live in Hamamatsucho - Kiki浜松町のライブ (Jellyfish) 130620
http://youtu.be/FLRkU6NK7mQ

Sliding towards individual comments - for the guitarist (Sada Shuzo / 佐田宗蔵) and the drummer (Kawabata Tenta / 川畑天太), I get the impression of high energy behind careful restraint. On July 18th, 2013, while the bass player stepped away for a few minutes, they let loose with a bit of exuberant playing - as you can see in this short chip:

Kiki 浜松町ライブ Set-4 (Prelude) Kiki Live in Hamamatsucho (130718)
http://youtu.be/72CBNMM3HDU

And now, let's look at the individual band members (listed in Japanese style with family names first):

- Sada Kyoko / 佐田京子 (lead singer + guitar and tambourine)
The singer has what I would call an authentic voice. I don't know how to describe singers in technical terms, but my ears tell me she has a nice, heartfelt way of singing, that sounds truly beautiful in songs like "Jellyfish / ジェリーフィッシュ", accentuated by the wonderful harmony when singing with the backup singer (see next band member).

- Sada Shugi / 佐田宗義 (guitar, backup vocals, mandolin)
As mentioned above, this band member really accentuates the lead singers voice when they sing in harmony. He plays rhythm guitar and mandolin. On many songs he's very unobtrusively backing up the lead singers voice in a subtle way that you wouldn't even notice if you weren't watching the band perform. There seems to be a good amount of synergy between the two singers (with Jellyfish being a good example).

Sada Shuzo / 佐田宗蔵 (guitarist)
A subtly fascinating character I'm finding myself staring off into space trying to think of the best way to describe. ….. How about this - I'll try to paint a picture with elements I've perceived while watching/listening to the band in Hamamatsucho:
- Precisely input and played guitar accents giving life to the flowing rhythm of the rest of the band.
- Leading up to something, he will look at his foot switches and very... not "carefully" so much as "precisely" reach out and activate a switch - similar in a way to his playing. Again, I'm struggling to find the right words to describe this - some combination of relaxed coolness and precision?
- I've only seen it once, in the short energetic burst of playing I mentioned further up the page, but this guy, along with the drummer, have some serious energy/power that makes you want to get up and dance. The band's current songs are great, but I would love to see a few songs where this kind of energy is featured more...:
http://youtu.be/72CBNMM3HDU
- And... what else. Hard to pin down, and maybe just my imagination, but I have sat there in Hamamatsucho and thought I perceived a solid strength to the guitar player that permeates the whole band and keeps things tight? I don't know, but that's how it has seemed to be at times. Anyway - rock on Shuzo!

- Fujitani Yohei 藤谷葉平 (bass player)
Thinking of the bass player, the image that comes to mind is the cool notes he plays at 3:35 in "Jellyfish / ジェリーフィッシュ" (referencing the CD version of the song). As I told the bass player and drummer once - I appreciate their steady and smooth playing - such an integral part of the band's sound. The people at the font of the stage (in any band) are in the spotlight, but no less important are the people at the back.

- Kawabata Tenta / 川畑天太 (drummer)
When the band plays at inside venues (the Hamamatsucho concerts are performed under a roof [street-level under part of a building actually]), the drummer has a full set of drums, but for the outside performances he plays a (what's the correct term?) drum-box. Again, the sensation of throttled-down power played with precision. I'd love to see the guitarist and drummer really get going at full power some day. Restrained precision is probably the best thing for the band as a whole, but full-throttle exuberance would also be nice to see/hear as well.

And in case you're wondering why three of the band members have the same family name (Sada), they're siblings. Everyone except the bass player (who is from Saitama) is from Kumamoto in Kyushu (the southernmost of Japan's four main islands).

Well - there you go. I'm not an expert in music by any stretch of the imagination, but I love music, and think this is a great band. Banzai Kiki!

Several Video Views of Exhibitions - December 2012

2012-12-30T09:19:00.002-08:00

I'm trying something a bit different this time - introducing several art exhibitions via video clips:

Inoue Baku (井上麦) Exhibition/Installation - Gallery Kobo (巷房) December 2012 (121217)
http://youtu.be/X0RX9jpyhJM

An interesting exhibition/installation consisting of stone artwork and the shadows the pieces cast (from a single spotlight placed on the floor near the door). This exhibition was in all three of Gallery Kobo's exhibition rooms, but I only the saw the two in the basement (which is what this video shows).

Onodera Sumino Exhibition at GOBP-306 小野寺純乃 (銀座奥野ビル306号室) 121215
http://youtu.be/mZWYS6InA1Y

This installation had an interesting element - the artist used an old out-of-ink pen to write invisible things onto the white strips of paper. After she explained that, I contemplated what I would do if I were writing something that no one would ever read, and I said something to the effect of (I remember the concept of what I said very well, but not the exact wording), "If I did that, I would write the kind of things that I'd like to say to people, but cannot for whatever reason (desire for world peace, etc.). What did you write?", and she confirmed that she had indeed written the type of things that feel good to write, but not to have someone read!

A couple of views of the opening party for a group exhibition at Gallery Ginza-One:

"Kiki - Live in Hamamatsucho - 2012"

2012-12-29T03:14:00.003-08:00

On December 6th, 2012, I was on my way to Hamamatsucho Station when I heard a beautiful voice on the December wind... which turned out to be the group Kiki, who were performing outdoors, near the station.

I listened to both of their performances (each consisting of several songs) that evening and found them to be a nice, tight band, with a singer who has a beautiful voice. The band's website is:

And their YouTube page is:

Majima Hidenori (間島秀徳) Exhibition at Steps Gallery - (2012/11)

2012-11-14T05:23:00.001-08:00

This exhibition (2012/10) by Majima Hidenori (間島秀徳) at Steps Gallery consisted of the very large painting shown in this photo. As I contemplated the picture, I commented to the gallery owner that I had at first thought it was an abstract image, but the more I looked at it, the more it looked like the ocean... He said it was indeed the ocean, but as seen from underwater. With that realization and contemplating the painting anew, there was a terror/fear in the image with echoes of March 11th, 2011....

Kugimachi Kazue (釘町一恵) Exhibition at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) - (2012/10)

2012-10-27T03:16:00.001-07:00

This exhibition (2012/10/22-27) by Kugimachi Kazue (釘町一恵) at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) consisted of pictures similar to the one featured on the promotional card, which I thought had an otherworldly appearance... as though the light were some kind of link to another universe and/or time. この展示会は、DM絵葉書のような不思議な感じの絵でした。

Tonuma Makiko (戸沼牧子) Exhibition at K's Gallery - (2012/10)

2012-10-27T01:12:00.000-07:00

This exhibition (2012/10/22-27) by Tonuma Makiko (戸沼牧子) at K's Gallery consisted of pictures making inspired use of colors. The colors were quite nice, and while the picture featured on the promotional card gives you some idea, keep in mind that printing can't quite reproduce really subtle colors, and - indeed - the original (naturally) looked better with really beautiful color.

戸沼牧子展 / K's Gallery

この展示会は、DM絵葉書のような美しい色の絵でした。 DMの例は、いいが、オリジナルの方は(勿論!)もっと綺麗でした。色使いは、素晴らしいと思いました。

This exhibition (2012/10/11-20) by Kanai Chie (金井千絵) at Gallery-403 (ギャラリー403) consisted of a range of interesting pictures - the darkest colored one featured on the promotional card. Apparently each picture was inspired by visits to various regions of Japan. この展示会は、DM絵葉書のような絵でした。それぞれの絵は、日本のあっちこっちの地方だそうです。 [2010 Exhibition] [2011 Exhibition]
