Angels, mosque at ground zero and 9/11

I have recently written a series of posts about the controversy about building a mosque in NYC on my beliefnet blog. For some reason this issue has engaged me. Here is a video blog post. I have a feeling I may have a lot more to say about this topic and I am not really sure why.

What do angels, mosque at ground zero and 9/11have in common? From the comments and e mails I have been getting very few people chose to look at the issue through the eyes of the angels, nor have they asked the angels how else they can see these events.

It was interesting to me. I actually found myself getting rather upset with people’s judgments and of course that meant I was judging them for judging! I view every event in life as opportunity to either deepen my connection to my filter system or to deepen my connection to my spirit. My emotions are a clear indication which direction I am going. Joy, love, acceptance indicate I am getting closer to my spirit. Fear, judgment and anger show me I am reinforcing my limiting beliefs and deepening my connection to my filer system.

We as human beings have missed so many opportunities to profoundly change ourselves and the world. Whenever we point a finger of judgment or blame at someone or something there are three fingers pointing back at us, yet we keep trying to blame out there.

At the end of World War II we had an awesome opportunity to collectively, as a species ask ourselves what environment made that war possible. Instead of asking what created such prejudice and hatred that Hitler was able to come to power instead we perpetuated judgment. When 9/11 happened we did the same thing. Instead of saying, ‘um look at the world judgment creates’ we decided to resort to violence and perpetuate judgment.

We will never ever create peace with violence, NEVER. By reaching out with love we could change the world. Instead of Christians against Muslims we could learn to honor each other’s beliefs and extend love instead of judgment. That is what angels would do.

Perhaps we could learn to worship together rather than create enemies with our judgment. What a concept create friends instead of enemies!

I was once going to write a book called Irreconcilable Similarities. If we look long enough we will find the similarities, see they are clouded by our judgment and then we can create cooperation and peace.

But no, it would seem we would rather be right than be happy, almost every time. Our judgment is responsible for 9/11, after all that is what created the terrorists in the first place.

Have you ever had one of those white-hot AHA!-moments where you suddenly understood something that had been eluding you?

Well I just had one recently . . .

I am leaving for Lithuania in a few days and I was trying to get everything done before I left. One of those things was opening up my favorite program, Mastering Life.

I’ve been re-working this apprenticeship program for a while now. As I was going through the class material, I suddenly had a flash. I’m really enjoying the updating process and getting excited about these updates, but I’m feeling really pressured to move faster and try to get it done immediately.

Then my little voice suddenly piped up and said, “Allow yourself to fully savor reading and editing this material rather than just getting it done.”

What a relief. Now, while I spend time in my favorite place in the whole world (next to my home in Hawaii) I will savor re-reading and editing, tweaking and changing.

I was amazed that because I wanted to get things done I forgot to take time to smell the roses. Life is after all a journey best savored in the moment. So I am back to savoring and all is well in my world.

Fearless Friday: so what about love?

Fear is such an interesting emotion. It has stopped so many people from living the life of their dreams, it has allowed events like the Holocaust and encourages so much pilikia (trauma and drama) in the world.

If we decide to move away from fear we create fear to move away from but if we consciously choose to move toward love instead we create love to move toward. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which method would create a more pleasant experience.

Yet, our habitual, knee jerk reaction is to run away from fear. Our bodies are even hardwired to do that but you can begin to make a conscious choice moment by moment until moving toward love becomes your default setting.

How do we do that? The first step is to notice fear from a place of emotional neutrality. “Oh, I notice fear is present.” Just notice, avoid judging or reacting, just observe.

The next step is to make a new choice. How can you celebrate or appreciate whatever is seemingly creating your fear? You may not be able to do it at first but with practice you will be able to do it with ease.

It helps if you begin the practice of gratitude and appreciation before fear shows up. Take you top ten fears and find something the appreciate and celebrate about each one.

Examples:

Fear of death – I can use that to appreciate each moment of my life, stay in the moment and to be grateful for everything I do have

Not enough money – when you get a bill you can celebrate it’s arrival (This one takes practice), give thanks that someone trusted you to pay this bill, give sincere thanks for the money to pay this bill and really feel that. I actually made a special box for my bills decorated with hearts, dollar bills, fairies and angels. I displayed it on my desk and before long my finances changed.

Being abandoned – give thanks for the reminder to spend time opening up to your connection to your spirit and really feeling the sea of love you swim in.

I think you get the idea. Have a love fest instead of a marathon running from fear.
