Tom Clancy’s EndWar is the first title in the Tom Clancy franchise to take the form of an RTS. In the vein of other titles in the franchise, it attempts to blend realistic storytelling with strategic action, all for the pleasure of military game geeks across the world. The game recounts a not-so-distant future, where dwindling oil supplies have driven major world powers toward heavy militarization. In EndWar, the three primary factions include the United States, the European Federation, and those classic Clancy baddies, the Russians. Interestingly, the “universe” of EndWar is built around the same world where all those other Clancy games took place. That means you’ll find former Rainbow Six operatives planning strikes against groups led by former Ghost Recon team members. If the general leading the U.S. Joint Strike Force sounds familiar to longtime Clancy fans, they might want to consider breaking out the latest Ghost Recon game to get reacquainted with Scott Mitchell.
The underlying story is surprisingly thin after the game begins, however. The player is tasked with capturing satellite uplinks in major cities, which are essentially control points, in locations all over the globe. As you progress, new abilities and upgrades can be earned; nothing says “successful strategist” like the unleashing of air strikes or a WMD upon one’s foes, the very prospect of which will likely attract casual players to the RTS genre. Hardcore RTS gamers might be a bit stymied when first approaching EndWar, however. For one thing, the game focuses more heavily on fighting than resource management. This can be partly attributed to the previous release of the game on consoles, where players are presumably more interested in loud noises than thoughtful tactics. Some may find this “dumbing down” to be an annoyance, but in truth, the game is still quite fun to play. Another distinctive feature – and certainly EndWar’s most touted one – is the voice command system. Find yourself a good headset, and you’ll be able to control just about every element on the battlefield with words alone. Barking commands at your forces and seeing the units blast enemies at your bidding is probably the most rewarding experience EndWar has to offer. Granted, no voice recognition software works perfectly all the time, but EndWar does it better than any other game I’ve experienced thus far. An onscreen command menu also branches out as you speak, guiding you through all possible commands so you can learn the voice mechanics in a quick and fluid manner.

Each faction offers the same basic unit organization, though some players might find themselves attracted to factions based on differences in their individual characteristics. The Russians typically have the bulk of heavily armored vehicles, while the European units have the best speed, leaving the US as a fairly “balanced” bunch. The arsenal contains a nice mixture of futuristic goodies from robotic drones to high-energy lasers, lending a slick, sci-fi appeal to the game. The gameplay modes themselves offer some nice variety, as well. One moment you’ll be leading a tactical assault on JFK Space Center, the next you’ll be scrambling to defend Paris from invading armies. The online play even offers persistent battlefields to some extent, where players will no doubt be eager to pit themselves against each other in a bid for world domination. The possibilities for skirmishes in each game mode are fairly wide, although it would have been nice to see greater focus on storytelling. With Call of Duty games offering a strong narrative from multiple factions in a war, it seems like something similar could have been implemented in EndWar, at least on a broad scale if not on a personal level.

While most Tom Clancy games deliver excellent aesthetics, EndWar is an inexplicably disappointing standout. The aural landscape is rather drab, and lacks much of the solid sounds players have come to expect from other Clancy titles. The camera keeps the player close enough to the action that some sense of the battle’s scale should be present, yet there is very little beyond the chattering of soldiers that stimulates the ears. Like its simplified gameplay, PC RTS fans will likely blame the console roots of the game for its bland visuals. There is no reason the draw distance should be so deeply affected on modern hardware, yet distant geometry is extremely prone to pop-in. The animation’s weaknesses show easily at the close camera distance, and there is little detail to admire on the units themselves. Granted, the RTS was meant to draw players to the game based on its mechanics rather than its visuals, and EndWar manages to at least offer up some enjoyable gameplay.

Review Scoring Details for Tom Clancy’s EndWar

Gameplay: 8.0
EndWar handles itself nicely, and using the voice commands is certainly a pleasure.

Graphics: 7.0
Things are pretty simple at the visual level, but at least it’s easy to tell what’s going on.

Sound: 7.0
Lots of dialogue, but where’s the thunderous battlezone we wanted?

Difficulty: Medium
The mechanics are pretty easy to pick up, and the game provides some decent challenges.

Concept: 8.0
Voice commands provide the obvious distinction in EndWar, but there is still a pervasive feeling that the title didn’t quite live up to its full potential.

Multiplayer: 8.0
There’s certainly some fun to be had in the online Theater of War modes.

Overall: 7.8
Tom Clancy’s EndWar is certainly not a crowning achievement for the franchise, but it works well as an RTS and may help to draw new players to the genre. Hardcore RTS fans will likely be disappointed by the game’s lack of depth, however.
Are you up for it?
***
The year is 2012. You’re a pilot who must defend the country from a powerful private military force attacking the United States with advanced jet fighters. What do you do? Lead game designer Thomas Simon gave us his “must-do” list of things that players should try when they’re engaging in aerial warfare.
Ubisoft’s Must-Do List For Players of “Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.”
(Flight Action Game for Xbox 360 and PS3, March 2009)
1. Kill a plane with rockets; snipe it from long distance while anticipating its movements. Deadly and impossible to dodge.

2. Use ERS low altitude to kill a plane with the gun in Rio; ERS will guide between buildings until you can get close enough to kill your enemy. Be sure to ERS the plane while its above the city.

3. Kill four planes at the same time with one salvo of multiple AA missiles; make sure you time the shot at the right time to see four explosions at the same time. Best mission for that: Rio or Afghanistan.

4. Destroy the Myrmidon (Magellan mission) with the gun only if you are looking for a REAL challenge, or use just Free Fall bombs if you want to make it pay easily.

5. Kill a ground unit in OFF with the gun.

6. Kill a ground unit and a boat with the same cluster bomb in the Africa mission near the dam.

7. Recover the plane in OFF at ground level between building in Rio or Chicago; you should lose the sight on your plane to really consider you an ace.

8. Perform a Cobra or a 360 at water level, as low as possible, then wait for the vectorial thrusting to stop and go up, leaving a large splash of water. Use a plane with vectorial thrusting like the F-22.

9. You can dodge a missile in OFF by crashing it in the ground/water (while you survive, obviously). You must fly very low and perform a quick drift just before the impact.

10. Make a cobra between the antennas of the Sear Towers in Chicago; make a drift just around Jesus, and make a cobra under the bridge in Rio.
11. Go in OFF training mission and kill a drone attacking in you in OFF by crashing it in the ground/water. Force it to fly at a very low altitude while chasing you and wait for the moment; it will push its engine to dive toward the water, so then make a quick drift to avoid the crash. Splash! This works actually with any aggressive AI.

Tom Clancy must be rolling in the dough from these video games. Now that his gaming franchise has entrenched itself in the shooter realm with its “Ghost Recon” and “Rainbow Six” series, the brand is taking to the air. It’s a welcome addition to the not-so-friendly skies.

First off, don’t expect a flight simulator here. This is pure arcade-style dogfighting. Stalls are few and, for the most part, it’s best to just keep hurling missiles and dodging those from enemies until you are the last plane standing. “HAWX” does nothing original with its gameplay, but all the parts you need (intense action, outstanding sound effects, etc.) are all present and accounted for.

The strongest aspect of “HAWX” is its visual design. Instead of pretend countries at war, the plot takes you from Rio de Janeiro to Washington, D.C., and beyond. While not perfect, a massive dogfight over D.C. was awfully cool to watch, save all the destruction I caused. A beefed-up multiplayer would have been nice, but what is there is enough to entertain you.

For close to a decade, it seems, the “Ace Combat” franchise has dominated the aerial-combat genre. “HAWX,” at least, provides some worthy competition.

As a member of the elite HAWX squadron, you’ll find yourself manning cutting-edge aircraft, training on all the newest weapons, and carrying out dangerous top-secret missions set against the backdrop of a chaotic future, where private military companies (PMCs) are constantly putting your skills to the test and forcing you to defend your reputation as one of the top military pilots on Earth.

The Reykjavik Accords of 2012 defined the role of these PMCs in combat, and they made it fully legal for these groups to purchase from the international armaments market, leading to a shift in the structure of global military power. You and your fellow HAWX pilots are some of the most highly-trained specialists in the world.
With the rise of the PMCs, your unique skills in higher demand than ever before.
An Iconic, Enhanced Reality System to Help You Deliver Results

When you’re in the midst of a firefight, E.R.S. in-game technology can help anyone survive, if you know how to take advantage of it. Featuring incoming missile detection, an anti-crash system, damage assessment, a tactical map, and weapons trajectory control, E.R.S. even allows you to issue orders to your squadron and other units, much like the iconic Cross-Com system in other Tom Clancy games. When you’re getting started, you can ease into the rigors of flight and gain confidence by using a special assistance mode that offers support through the E.R.S. This mode can be switched off at any time, deactivating safety features and allowing you to perform advanced maneuvers.

And the game’s photo-realistic environments have been created using detailed satellite data. When you pull back on the throttle to jet all over the world, you’ll experience this authentic world from a variety of viewpoints.

Game play options aren’t limited either, with the campaign featuring solo and multiplayer options with seamless jump in/jump out functionality, and a PVP mode where players can challenge each other to dog-fights for bragging rights, earning experience points and cash, and unlocking additional weapons.

Ubisoft is probably my favorite publisher right now. When I bought my Xbox 360 I picked up a copy of Rainbow Six Vegas, and it’s been a love affair ever since. It just seems that when I pick up a Ubisoft title it delivers. I don’t mean to say that everything they do turns to gold, but recently even their misses have had moments of greatness. EndWar which was a let down for the most part gave us a quality voice activation system that will hopefully find better implementation moving forward.

With that in mind – when I got the email from Ubisoft that the H.A.W.X. demo had gone live on the Xbox Live Marketplace I immediately got excited. I have never, ever been a fan of flying games and I thought if there was ever a company that could create a flying game that I would enjoy, it’d be Ubisoft.

They did not disappoint.

The H.A.W.X. demo opens with a stunning cut scene. The phrase “ye though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil – fore I am 80,000 feet and climbing” ushers in a fast paced clip of a jet screaming towards a city as radio calls come across that your soldiers are pinned down. I loved this opening because it does a good job of setting up the game, plus as the jet receives the word from the ground the pilot responds “roger that Ghost leader” a nice tip of the cap to another Ubisoft property (apparently the H.A.W.X. game takes place in the same world as the Ghost Recon series).

You’re given two missions to select from in this demo. The first is entitled OFF Certification and it’s exactly what you’d assume – a basic tutorial on the controls to get you comfortable in the jet. The Officer Certification mission is very important so I strongly suggest you play through it first. You’ll be given a quick tutorial on how to use the ERS system (your navigation), how to climb (hold down on the left stick), how to dive (hold up), how to yaw right and left (bumpers), how to accelerate (RT), and how to brake (LT). You’ll also be given a crash course in how to turn off the navigation (tap one of the triggers twice), and how the plane handles without the ERS system engaged.

The tutorial shouldn’t take you too long. I think I played through the entire thing in about 15 minutes, but that includes the time I crashed into the mountain because I didn’t pull up and accelerate enough during a power slide. Oh did I forget to mention the insane slide turns that you’ll learn in the OFF Certification mission? Well just imagine you’re flying an F-16A Fighting Falcon and you need to stop on a dime and turn to face an enemy approaching, you hit the brake and yaw to the direction you want to turn and bam you’re facing right in for the kill. The only problem is that now you’re not going fast enough to stay in the air – so you start an immediately free fall from space. Just slam the accelerator and pull up on the nose. If you forget that down is up (which I did) you will be witness to a pretty spectacular crash. The one down side to crashing is that you don’t do area damage, which would have been awesome to see a building crumble as your jet slams into it at a high rate of speed (although understandable why that was left out of the game).

The second unlocked demo mission is called Glass Slipper and it takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (as does the OFF Certification mission). After selecting the mission you’ll be taken through some customization options. You can select your plane – in the demo the only available option is the F-16A Fighting Falcon. You’ll select the ammunition that you’re carrying, your control configuration (Normal/Expert), and the difficulty level (Normal/Hard/Elite). Before the short introduction to the level you’re given a graph that sets out your allies as they stand in the battle. There are different categories including: Fighters, Bombers, Ground Forces, Helicopters, Air Defense and Naval Forces. Next to each name is a percentage to show how they are fairing in the fight. After that you’re brought into a loading screen which is actually a mission briefing. If you’ve played EndWar then you have an idea of how this is set up, but it’s mainly a futuristic looking multiple screen set up where you’re shown information from the ground, given details and elements of the mission and briefed on any other useful information that might be advantageous to you. These scenes are done expertly well, with a nice polish and does a very good job of making you feel like you’re invested in this large scale assault/defense of a city as the case may be.

Now that you’ve gone through all of those steps and introductory materials you’re ready to play. You’re in the air when the mission begins and immediately you’ll notice that this game is beautifully rendered. Hit the trigger twice to pull back to a far away slightly off center camera angle and you’ll see the beautiful detail in the flight of the plane, or just fly low and check out the statute of Jesus on the mountain in Brazil to enjoy the scenery. The year is something like 2021 so you’re far enough in the future that your ERS pointing you in the direction to go in order to avoid enemy missiles that are locked on you doesn’t seem implausible. Basically when someone fires a rocket at you, your ERS system allows you to press X, and a series of gates appear in the sky. If fly through those gates you’ll avoid the missile, or come up behind your enemy as the case may be. This is an awesome feature that I really liked – it’s still difficult to manage so it doesn’t make the game impossibly easy, and there are times when your ERS will be down and provide no assistance at all.

The mission sees you fighting off an enemy incursion which is coming from the land, sea and air. First you’ll fight off the planes with your ERS in tact. This part goes pretty easily as your squadmates and you make quick work of the enemies. You’re then asked to stop a sea invasion (there are still planes buzzing around), this part is a bit more difficult, but not nearly as tough as stopping the troops on land. You don’t want to blow the city to bits (you are afterall defending the city) so you must use your ERS to map out a way to fire on the tanks on city streets without taking out a school.

During the entire battle you’ll be hearing comm chatter from the ground, from other planes, from troops, from HQ and from anyone else with a radio. It makes the entire experience feel very frantic, incredibly fast paced and realistic and becomes very engaging. I died MANY times playing through this level, and there is something to be said about a game being too fast at first. Before I was comfortable with the controls I was having a tough time getting behind enemies, or pulling up in time to not hit the water. This makes the game difficult, which is good because flying a jet at super speeds and firing on a tank on a city street should be difficult.

Once you get a hang of the controls the mission isn’t too difficult. There is a point where your ERS system goes out and you have to switch it off (two taps of the trigger), which allows you to do some insane moves that would make a lesser pilot puke in his mask. However, the dog fights (are they still called those?) are intense, and because you’re battling in the sky it won’t take many hits to bring you down, which adds another element to the game. I generally do not care for airplane based games, but the H.A.W.X. demo did enough to pique my interest in the title.

One feature that I didn’t mention was the voice controls. I did not try these – mainly because when I played through the demo it was during time when my wife (who works overnight shift) was sleeping and the thought of he waking up to me screaming (ON MY LEFT) into an Xbox 360 headset

was a bit offsetting. However, I imagine that the controls are similar to EndWar in that they work well, and can be seamlessly integrated into the gameplay.

The other major addition in H.A.W.X. is the online multiplayer which is significant. In this game you will be able to jump in/out of the story mode in multiplayer. Basically you’re flying along with a teammate who has to go eat dinner so he jumps out and you seamlessly transfer to non multiplayer story mode. This is a great addition in my opinion because one of the biggest problems I have with online multiplayer is that it’s tough to get together with someone for an extended period of time to complete the story mode. Of course there is also online player vs. player modes which promise to be intense as you engage in dogfights with your friends or strangers around the world.

Bottom line: Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. is a beautiful game that handles with an amazing degree of precision and provides the type of intense mid air combat that you simply cannot find anywhere else. I am not the biggest fan of airplane based combat games but the amount of polish in H.A.W.X., combined with the responsive controls and frantic pace of the dogfights are undeniably cool and the demo left me wanting more.

My major concern with this game is how the story is going to be told and whether or not it’ll just be tacked on at the end. If I had one complaint about the Tom Clancy series from Ubisoft it’s that the story sometimes comes off as a bit jumbled. With a game like H.A.W.X. you could very easily lose the story and still have a competent fast paced game, but a strong story could help push this game as a new IP with some staying power.

Oh and for those wondering – apparently H.A.W.X. stands for High Altitude Warfare eXpiremental squadron, which is such a painfully horrible name that I hope to never have to repeat it in this space again.

The two gamers were engaged in a little PlayStation 3 shoot’em up action on Saturday when armed police stormed the flat where they were playing.

Neighbours in Valby heard what they thought were gunshots coming from the flat and informed the local plod.

Cue the neighbourhood being cordoned-off and firearms officers swinging into action.

It seems the excessive volume of the gaming session convinced locals a real crime was being committed. The two gamers were cuffed until it became clear what was going on - when they were released.

The local police explained that they always answer calls of suspected firearms activity which does lead to some false-alarms at times.

According to our secret mouthpiece, both Clancy games will be announced by the French publisher later this year and there’s every chance they could even release this side of Christmas.

What’s not clear is whether or not the new games will be continuations of current-gen spin-offs Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Rainbow Six Vegas, or entirely new entries.

The two-year span since the last Ghost Recon suggests an entirely new start for that series, and frankly we’d be surprised to see a third RS Vegas.

Ubisoft declined to comment when contacted.

ApexMods has announced the launch of Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed, a new add-on mod for the squad-based military tactical shooter game, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon.

Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed combines a variety of content introduced to the game by various other mods in the past. The mod makes more than 100 maps and missions available in single and multiplayer mode and offers over 200 different weapons to choose from.

The mod is released as a tribute to the Ghost Recon community. It aspires to honor the makers and fans of this great game, and to be a token of appreciation for all the people who contributed to the world of Ghost Recon over the years.

Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed is the redux of popular content that has been introduced to the game by various other mods in the past, and it strives to incorporate those elements of Ghost Recon’s history into a timeless collection, meticulously complemented by novel features. All additions have been carefully integrated and balanced to provide a homogeneous level of professional audio-visual and technical finish.

Heroes Unleashed is aiming to improve and expand many aspects of the original game to increase its already highly addictive replayability, while remaining true to Ghost Recon’s unique character and concept.

It also tries to intensify the realistic feel and immersive qualities of the game, making it more challenging and emphasizing the atypical Ghost Recon game style: Tactical team play rather than the “solo, run and shoot, wanna-live-forever” style found in many other FPS games.

If you are looking for killing sprees and fragfests, move right along, there is nothing to see here. Just as the original, Heroes Unleashed is predominantly about tactics and teamwork, and a good strategy will serve you much better than quick reflexes and an itchy trigger finger.

With the combination of all of its features, Heroes Unleashed seeks to create the optimum Ghost Recon experience for both single player games as well as multiplayer battles, whether Co-Op, Solo or Team based ones. The mod wants to accommodate a full spectrum of players from the casual gamer, over regular clan and guild players, up to league professionals.
The Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed mod is available as a free download.

The PlayStation Portable edition of Tom Clancy’s EndWar is a decent, if humdrum, turn-based strategy game. The biggest difference between the portable and console EndWars is that the PSP game eschews the innovative voice controls and real-time strategy for a more traditional, turn-based, and hexagonal affair. There is some light voice work, though, that helps bring your armies to life.

EndWar’s story is typical Tom Clancy stuff involving three campaigns in Europe, America, and Asia. Players can choose to begin in either Europe or America, and within each crusade you have some choice in the order you tackle the dozens of missions. This all adds up to quite a lengthy game that can be subtly customized to your taste.

Gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played a turn-based strategy game before. There are two phases to each turn: move and action. You move, your opponent moves, then you attack, and finally your opponent attacks. The playing field is divided into hexagons, providing more offensive and defensive opportunities than the square tile-based areas of Final Fantasy Tactics. Adjacent allies will provide a support boost during skirmishes and you can block enemy units from advancing by placing your vehicles next to them with one hex in between. A wide variety of units is available (land, sea, and air) to keep things interesting. The requisite amount of strategy is here, it just isn’t anything that hasn’t already been done better.

The other area where EndWar PSP is lackluster is the visuals. It looks exactly like the less powerful DS game, which doesn’t even look great by its standards. Your troops are tiny stick figures on the battlefield. The game goes for a more realistic presentation in its battle sequences, but the art lacks personality and what little animation is here doesn’t run very smoothly.

Beyond the single-player campaigns are a head-to-head multiplayer mode for two commanders who own the game and a map editor for creating your own skirmishes. There are also achievements to be earned and officer ranks to progress through. The developers really packed a lot of content in here.

Closing Comments
EndWar PSP is a perfectly suitable turn-based strategy game, but there are too many better titles of this sort available on Sony’s handheld. Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea both have better visuals and more unique gameplay. If you’re a strategy fiend and jonesing for a fix you could certainly do worse, but EndWar PSP will likely soon be forgotten.
