The men were scheduled to be questioned by a special fact-finding team with no power to initiate criminal charges.

“The commitment to eradicate corruption shouldn’t be tainted by other interests,” Yudhoyono said, instructing the government to provide security to witnesses for their safety.

The high-level resignations — virtually unheard of in Javanese culture — were the culmination of a months-long battle between the top anti-graft agency and rival police and prosecutors in Indonesia, which is regularly ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world.

The case has fueled opposition to the police and poses a serious challenge to Yudhoyono’s newly installed government. He was re-elected in July for another five-year term in the Muslim-majority nation of 235 million.

The commission has been key to Indonesia’s efforts to wipe out endemic corruption since the downfall in 1998 of late dictator Suharto. His 32-year rule was marred by human rights violations, cronyism and nepotism that held back economic development and scared away investors.

Public outrage was sparked by the arrest last week of two deputies at the agency, known by its Indonesian acronym KPK. They were released after hundreds of thousands of Internet users signed a petition in support of them on Facebook and protests were held across the main island, Java.

Ritonga and Duadji were named in wiretaps aired on live television this week in which bribes of hundreds of thousands of dollars and a plot to frame KPK deputies Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto were exposed.

Small demonstrations continued after the announcement yesterday, with around a dozen students staging a hunger strike from a tent pitched outside the KPK’s offices in downtown Jakarta. The number of members of the Facebook page for the men neared 850,000.

Although Chandra and Bibit have since been released, they still face charges of abuse of power for issuing a travel ban against a corruption suspect and allegedly hampering investigations by talking to the media.

Yudhoyono, a 60-year-old former general, had been widely credited for the success of the anti-corruption campaign during his first term in office. Scores of corrupt politicians, entrepreneurs and law enforcement officials were tried and convicted, including the father-in-law of one of the president’s sons.

Work stuff : A new round for Police vs KPK battle...

Police insists on accusing KPK leaders of bribery, extortion

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Fri, 11/06/2009 1:01 AM | National

National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri insisted on Thursday that investigators had solid evidence of bribery and extortion involving two Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders in connection with a graft case implicating businessman Anggoro Widjojo.

Bambang told a hearing with the House of Representatives’ Commission III on legal affairs police investigators had secured evidence of transfers of money to the now suspended KPK deputy chiefs Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto while probing into Anggoro’s alleged role in a graft case.

“We will be responsible for what we have done; there was no fabrication at all. We make sure we received no money in this case,” Bambang told the hearing which lasted until midnight.

According to Bambang, the case evolved around the testimony of suspended KPK chief Antasari Azhar about bribery and extortion involving KPK leaders, which Bambang said was followed by an investigation.

The bribery and extortion was related to KPK investigation into a bribery case involving Anggoro’s telecommunication provider PT Masaro Radiokom. Bambang said a top official at the Forestry Ministry also received Rp 17.2 billion from Anggoro. A KPK leader who has emotional ties with MK sought an entry ban imposed on Anggoro to prevent an investigation into the case.

The police’s probe also found, among other things, a transfer of a total of Rp 6 billion to five KPK leaders from Anggoro through middleman Ary Muladi, who later on withdrew his testimony.

Fun stuff : In just nearly 60 years...

Dear blogger ;

A good photograph about Las Vegas in early 1950 compare to the condition today. Drinks are served in scientific flasks, waitresses dress as nurses, meals are delivered with surgical utensils instead of cutlery and enormous cakes are made with toppings shaped like body parts. Now, powdered Beer.

A report from Karen Sprey - Gizmag show to us how ....

Picture the scene: you’ve been trekking hard all day in the great outdoors, enjoying everything nature has to offer. You’ve set up camp and your canned cheeseburgers are bubbling gently on the fire. As you watch the sun sink slowly behind the mountains the only thing missing is a cold beer. Well… (beer aficionados, you may want to stop reading now) Katadyn, the Swiss-based company behind the Trek’n’Eat canned cheeseburger and other high-tech, freeze-dried foods, has developed a world first – powdered beer – to wash it all down with.

Not a beer as such, the beverage powder will have a beer flavor and is non-alcoholic (though we understand that an alcoholic brew is on the way next year). If you really can’t do without the alcohol content you may wish to try Trek’n Eat’s red wine (there is also a mulled wine for cold winter evenings), which has an alcoholic content of 8.2%, similar to a light bottled wine. Both the wine and the forthcoming beer powder work along the same lines as the company's other products - just add water and enjoy.

The high-selling wine, however, has apparently been angering Italian winemakers who say the company has been copying their Chianti. German newspaper Spiegel Online today published a story claiming a Tuscan farmers association said the product was a 'terrible copy' and that wine-from-powder kits 'risk fooling less expert consumers on the real contents of the product on sale and damages the image of Italian and European production'.

A representative of Katadyn’s general management, Stefanie Dietrich, told Speigel, 'We are well aware that we're not even permitted to call the product wine. No grapes were used in its production, it's simply a product that is flavored to taste like wine.'

The product has been on the market for eight years, however Deitrich said the company will take its wine powder off the market next year when it introduces the beer powder.
Here is the report :

Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For nearly five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives -- in seniors who know new dignity; in families that know new opportunity; in children who know education's promise; and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just, including me.

In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle. His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He battled passionately on the Senate floor for the causes that he held dear, and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that's one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.

I personally valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've benefited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

His fight gave us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye. The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we've all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives.

For America, he was a defender of a dream. For his family, he was a guardian. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today -- to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.

Today, our country mourns. We say goodbye to a friend and a true leader who challenged us all to live out our noblest values. And we give thanks for his memory, which inspires us still.

Sincerely,

President Barack Obama
